CARBAD is a recently developed Australian process for the recovery of gold and platinum group metals (PGM). The process relies on the selective agglomeration phenomena of the gold and PGM to capture the mineral in a carbon-hydrocarbon media. The precious minerals are then extracted from the loaded media by a solvent gold room process producing a relatively pure concentrate. The media is then reformed and recycled. The process development from batch test work to a 5 t/h commercial scale CARBAD plant is discussed. The operation and results of processing a variety of ore types at several alluvial and hardrock gold mines is examined. The operating and capital costs for the CARBAD process shows that it is significantly less than that the conventional CIP/CIL. The environmental safety of the process is a major feature where precious metal deposits are located within urban environments or within wilderness areas.

FMC Gold's Paradise Peak Mine was one of the top two producers of mercury metal in North America in 1988 and 1989. As a by-product, elemental mercury is produced from cyanide soluble mercury minerals, primarily to reduce the health risks incurred with the refining of precious metal precipitate containing elemental mercury and mercury amalgams. A discussion of the design, primarily the Merrill-Crowe units, and permitting for the safe production of mercury will be presented. Additionally, laboratory testwork to determine the effect of mercury on reagent requirements in the Merrill-Crowe process will be discussed.

The health and safety of employees, efficiency of the operating system and production are paramount goals in underground coal mining. The section foreman assumes responsibility for making his part of the total system function to meet these goals. However, section foremen often have not been prepared to assume the full range of their responsibilities upon becoming a supervisor. This discussion addresses the full range of section foreman responsibilities and concomitant authority. Management principles that must be mastered by him are presented, and performance expectations as well as criteria for their evaluation are examined. The benefits realized from effective foreman training are discussed.

For geostatistical applications, heterogeneous spatial phenomena are better modeled as mixtures of populations. However, the modeling of the constituent populations can become complex. The alternative mixture model offers a simplified approach to the w modeling problem. The model is applied and tested on the Walker Lake data set. Compared to the univariate ordinary kriging model, the alternative model generates less biased block estimates.

From comments and questions concerning the meaning of USNR, and "why is the Navy in the mining business?" I believe it is worth while to establish the background and purpose of our company. We are a stock company formed by the purchase and reorganization of a company known as the U. S. Natural Gas Corporation. In May 1969, a group of investors with Mr. Robert L. Katz as president and chief executive officer, created United States Natural Resources, Inc., to develop and purposively use our Natural Resources in four areas: 1. Mines and Minerals 2. Forest Products 3. oil and Gas 4. Recreational Lands As final proof that we are not a government organization, I simply state. "We pay taxes." The mining division was formed in October 1969, with the completion of the merger of USNR and Vibration Measurement Engineers, Inc., Of Evanston, Illinois. Throughout the industry we were known as "VME," our company supplied consulting service in the field of seismic energy control, mining consulting and. we operated drilling, blasting and, contracting organizations in several areas of the country. Since that time we have developed and acquired producing properties in Quarrying, Coal Mining and Cement Copper Production.

This paper reports on the first 2 years in operation of a special-purpose coal handling rig which provides blending, temperature reduction, and continuous, automatic mechanical sampling as part of midstream barge to ship coal transfers. Briefly reviewing some of the characteristics of coal handling peculiar to midstream transfers, the paper discusses how the most beneficial aspects of midstreaming were enhanced through the design of this blending and sampling rig.

THE UNIT process of adsorption involves two steps: 1) Loading of the adsorbent. 2) Recovery of metal values from the adsorbent. Charcoal is the adsorbent commonly used in extractive metallurgy. The discovery of the adsorptive power of charcoal from solutions is generally accredited to Lowitz (1785), who observed that several dissolved organic substances were precipitated on charcoal. Graham was the first to demonstrate that inorganic substances were also adsorbed on charcoal. In 1830, he reported that iodine dissolved in KI solution was adsorbed on charcoal. "Productivity in openpit mines depends on the observation and adjustment of critical phases of operation. As one of the most expensive activities in openpit production, optimization of the load-haul-dump cycle becomes a critical aspect to address. Using simulation techniques and an ad hoc methodology for analyzing the key performance indicators (KPIs) involved in the production cycle, it is possible to compare actual performance and ideal operating conditions and develop an alert system when operating conditions are subpar with the expected production standards.Study objectivesThe purpose of this work is to implement a methodology for optimizing the haulage cycle by identifying and adjusting the factors that affect the cycle time performance. The methodology includes the implementation of an alert system emitting warning messages when one or several trucks are idle, or when the time of completing production tasks is falling outside a predefined value. This alert is compared with predefined KPIs and is used to determine corrective actions.The alert will:• Demonstrate the benefits of time analysis and how this affects the productivity results in the mining process.• Demonstrate the utility of KPIs in the extraction of ore and waste and how they help to identify equipment performance.• Develop software interfaces to visualize the alert system in order to increase awareness in the operations supervisor.• Make recommendations for future applications that can help improve the productive process of an openpit mine.Problem statementTransporting material in openpit mines may require the utilization of high capacity equipment, which also represents an elevated cost per hour. A supervisory system that controls the adequate distribution of trucks and shovels by providing the operational status of each unit shall contribute to increase productivity while subsequently reducing operational costs. Nevertheless, there is an issue with certain dead times such as queue trucks for loading, trucks waiting to be loaded and other delays. This creates inefficiencies in fuel consumption and energy utilization.For the identification of delays, a contextbased system could be required in order to help optimize the haulage cycle time by controlling delays in loading, haulage and dumping. After applying this methodology, efforts were focused in correcting out-of-standard performance values."

The use o f cyanide to extract gold from ores is widespread. In the process of extracting gold, cyanide may form metal cyanide complexes with a variety of other metals present in the ore. This study was carried out to investigate the biodegradation of the Cu(I)-cyanide complex and tetracyanonickelate under varying pH and nutrient additions. Detailed studies using shake flask cultures and bioreactors showed that naturally occurring bacteria residing on gold-leach-pad ore uti¬lized the Cu(I)-cyanide complex (CuCN) and tetracyano-nickelate, Na2(NiCN4), as carbon and/or nitrogen sources. Ammonium-nitrogen (NH4+-N) and/or cyanate (CNO-) accumulated in solution as the metal cyanide complexes were degraded. The accumulation of cyanate as a product is a concern due to its toxicity. Degradation rates were increased if a growth substrate (peptone, 0.1%) was added to the medium or if bioreactors were primed with peptone before addition of the metal-cyanide complex. Tetracyanonickelate was degraded at pH 8 without added peptone, but it was not degraded at pH 10. The addition of peptone was required for degradation of the Cu(I)-cyanide complex at pH 8 and pH 10. At pH 8, the addition of peptone resulted in the accumulation of cyanate, whereas, at pH 10, cyanate was not detected in the cultures. Biodegradation of metal-cyanide complexes was faster (approximately 1.5 to ten times faster) in bioreactors than in shake flask cultures. The addition of peptone was not required for degradation of metal-cyanide complexes in bioreactors. However, priming the bioreaetor with peptone resulted in higher metal-cyanide degradation rates over multiple cycles.

This paper describes the results of an underground coal mine trial installation of a shielded trailing cable. The cable was a three conductor, round, type SHC-GC, and was installed on a shuttle car in a conventional room and pillar mining section. The purpose of presenting the information is to prepare mine operators for proposed legislation that will require shielding on low-voltage trailing cables. Specifically, machine modifications are required to cable reels, packing glands, and couplers. Cable splicing is not as complex as expected but additional materials are needed in the kit and splice training is necessary. Even though shielding will cause some problems for the mine operator, it can reduce the hazard of electrical shock to mine workers. This paper will present information that mine operators can use to solve most of the problems that will be encountered if they are required to install shielded cables. The in-mine evaluation was funded by the U.S. Bureau of Mines.

The latest resource estimate for the Caspiche gold/silver/copper project in the Maricunga region of Chile was released by gold explorer Exeter Resource Corp. The resource is low grade, but bulk minable and drilling to date has shown a NI 43-101 compliant inferred resource of 1,117 Mt (1.23 billion st) grading 0.55 g/t (0.016 oz/st) gold, 3.81 g/t (0.111 oz/st) silver and 0.22 percent copper. Exeter said these findings make the in situ metals amounts of 609 t (19.6 million oz) of gold, 4.4 kt (137 million oz) of silver and 4.84 billion lbs of copper, which the company relates as 33.7 million gold equivalent ounces using assumed metal prices of $23.33/g ($800/oz) for gold, 35 cents/g ($12/oz) for silver and $2/lb for copper. The deposit is almost midway between Barrick?s Cerro Casale gold deposit and Kinross? Refugio Mine. In a statement Exeter chairman Yale Simpson said ?This updated resource estimate places Caspiche firmly among the world?s largest gold-copper discoveries in recent years and clearly supports our decision to aggressively drill the property, despite the global economic decline. ?We expect that the very substantial copper and silver credits will be extremely important, and will markedly impact the potential viability of Caspiche. Specifically, using metal prices of US$2/lb copper, $23.33/g ($800/oz) gold and 35 cents/g ($12/oz) silver, the 4.84 billion lbs of copper and 4.2 kt (137 million oz) of silver are equivalent to 376 kt and 62 t (12.1 and 2 million oz) of gold, respectively. ?Our recent drilling has defined what appears to be a coherent higher grade central zone associated with a definable early stage diorite intrusion. We expect this zone will be important in developing various mining and economic models for the project,? Simpson said. Exeter is still drilling the deposit to expand the re-source estimate further to the southeast and at depth and to upgrade the higher grade central zone to the indicated category. Simpson said, ?Exeter intends to enhance the value of Caspiche by continuing to de-risk the project through ongoing exploration, metallurgy, engineering, water and environmental studies. These studies will continue through the next 12 months and will lead to a conceptual development study. A timeline for the release of that study is being formulated. The project budget for the next 12 months is C$14 million.? Mineweb reported that Caspiche is likely too big of a deposit and at too high of altitude for Exeter to handle alone. Exeter will be looking to other majors, or perhaps the Chinese, to help develop this huge orebody. But, in the meantime, it also has its high grade Cerro Moro deposit in Argentina, which could be brought to production relatively quickly and at relatively low cost.

Crushers are designed and manufactured to survive the severe duty of mining environments worldwide. Under these conditions the crusher performance and availability is one of the critical factors in the mine?s production and profitability. Traditionally the development of these machines tends to be experience-based, incremental improvements in design due to challenges of different applications, duty, or manufacturing. In order to better serve the mining industry a new approach was taken to the design of primary crushers. This approach was to focus on safety and maintenance activities. The result of this effort is a new generation of gyratory crushers that can be serviced from above. Using the features of this new generation of crushers to their fullest extent crushing installations have improved safety, reduced design and construction costs, and lowered maintenance requirements. This presentation explores the benefits of two crusher installations utilizing top service crushers.

I am deeply honored and grateful to receive the prestigious Gaudin Award. Frankly, I find myself amazed to be included in the company of those outstanding individuals who have previously received this recognition. I am humbly honored to receive this award from an industrial research group. Gaudin was an internationally respected leader of mineral processing. His research contributions widely covered the whole spectrum of mineral processing science and technology, including comminution, size distribution, electrostatics, magnetics, thickening and, especially, the development of flotation theory and application. In his later career, he increased his emphasis on hydrometallurgical technology. In fact, one of his most notable practical contributions was in the development of leaching and ion exchange purification of uranium from low-grade ores. Gaudin catalyzed the trend in mineral processing toward engineering science for a better understanding of process mechanisms and kinetics. He said that those working in academic fields should have an underlying responsibility to the industry they represent. This imposed on him the objective of seeking out research areas that had some relevance to industry's problems. He said, "research without an audience cannot survive." Gaudin performed a most vital service, both in the areas of research in which he was actively involved and through his less-direct influence on current research by his many former students and their students in turn. Interestingly, Gaudin's strength has influenced Newmont Mining Corp. His favorite student was Plato Malozemoff. He had a long and distinguished career with Newmont, beginning as staff engineer in 1945, serving as Newmont's president for more than 30 years and as chairman of the company for 20 years. Newmont's greatest growth occurred during his leadership. Another one of Gaudin's graduate students from Montana School of Mines, Oscar F. Tangel, joined Newmont in 1967. He was a vice president of research and development until 1986. In their efforts, Newmont built a research group, developing the technologies of exploration, geophysics and metallurgy. The Newmont technical facility is named in honor of Malozamoff as "a leader in the development and implementation of new technologies." The mining industry is facing very difficult times, especially in the metals industry. Most metal prices have declined and are still not stable. Most domestic mining companies have largely done away with in-house research and development. Many are reluctant to invest in technology development for which there is not an immediate need. The metal mining industries are focusing on reducing operating costs to survive. Newmont is in the same situation. I appreciate that Newmont's management believes in the importance of research and technology and the impact technology has on the company's value. At Newmont, technology development involves working in the area of applied research. The connections from academic fundamental research to applied research and finally to process development and implementation are very important to develop a new technology. Fundamental research is our foundation, our guidance, giving us direction, providing the principal and mechanism and understanding why it works. Understanding the why will lead to further innovative development. Applied research needs to find the approach to reality, how it works, how to make it better and how to commercialize it. Process development and implementation needs a strong leadership, requires long-term commitment, makes improvements in practical engineering and finally develops an economically favorable process. Implementation is the most important stage in making research a reality. Each stage needs to give feedback to the other stages. Problems need to be understood and solved. Ore microscopy has been applied to the complex lead-zinc-copper-cobalt-nickel ores from the Madison Mire in the Fredericktown subdistrict of the Southeast Missouri Lead District to predict potential beneficiation problems. It has been found that in some portions of the ore deposits, textures are present which may result in metal losses. In ores from the Bonneterre Transition Zone the intimate association of siegenite with chalcopyrite may result in cobalt and nickel losses to the copper concentrate. In ores from higher stratigraphic horizons, this association is relatively uncommon, and siegenite is commonly associated with bravoite. This latter association will increase the recovery of the cobalt and nickel in bravoite, even though some of the fine-grained bravoite will not be recoverable. Other textures which may result in potential beneficiation problems include coatings of covellite on chalcopyrite and inclusions of sphalerite in galena.

Oil based drilling fluids utilize a number of industrial mineral products to accomplish oil and gas drilling in several environments where water based drilling fluids are less effective or inappropriate. These industrial minerals include: organically modified bentonite, organically modified lignite, barite, hematite, mica, calcium chloride and other salts. A variety of organic products are also utilized in oil based drilling fluid formulations. Oil based drilling fluids are preferred in several drilling situations because: they can be used to drill through water sensitive formations; they produce holes that are very close to the drill bit gauge; they exhibit high temperature stability; they are more environmentally acceptable; they minimize producing formation damage; they provide faster drilling rates when used with new polycrystalline diamond drill bits; they minimize pipe sticking and lost rig time.

This new tool can be used for the proper assessment of the potential economic wealth of any risky capital project. It does provide an unambiguous recommendation of the type "go or no go" to the decision-maker simply by comparing two different ratios profit/investment. One ratio determines the minimum value required to at least break-even while the other measures a probable value based on the asymptotic theory of statistical extremes (weakest link concept). Its application is briefly illustrated by means of an underground gold mine project, an oil sands mine project and a poly-metallic open pit project.

The lithologic, mineralogic, and magnetic beneficiation characteristics of the iron formation at U. S. Steel's Atlantic City Ore Mine, Fremont County, Wyoming, have been determined. The iron formation averages about 30 percent Fe content, and varies from 125 feet to about 500 feet in thickness. It is composed of interbedded magnetite-rich quartzites, magnetite-quartz-amphibole schists, and amphibole-chlorite schists. Quartz, actinolite-tremolite, chlorite, and magnetite are the essential mineral constituents. These rocks are differentiated into four major ore types on the basis of their relative quartz and amphibole content. The iron content of the magnetic concentrate decreases and the silica content increases with decreasing grain size and increasing amphibole content in each ore type at the same fineness of grind. Criteria were developed to enable the mine operator to recognize the ore types and to blend them to produce a more uniform concentrator feed. This results in less variation in product quality and requires fewer changes in operating conditions-in the concentrator.

It was estimated in Chemical Week1 that the uranium fuel requirements for the U.S. Electric Utility Industry by the mid 1980's would be about four times that-of what it is today. This corresponds to approximately 45,000 tons per year of 'yellow cake' - of which a good portion is represented by ammonium diuranate - vs. the 11,700 ton total estimated for 1975. Perhaps just as significant is the 40-fold increase in thirty years projected for the entire world since 1970. Thus by the year 2000. 'yellow cake' production could be in the order of [3]50.000 short tons annually.2 'Yellow cake', so named because of its inherently bright yellow color, is a finely divided precipitate that can be formed after the leaching step when refining uranium ores. Feed solids enhancement then occurs to at least 50% by weight using filters or centrifuges This is followed normally by drying and then calcining with the conversion of ammonium diuranate to triuranium octoxide represented by the following equation: [9 (NH4)2 U2 07 heat 14 NH3 7 + 15 H2O7 + 2N2/ + 6 U308 4] Theoretically, assuming 100% conversion every 100 kgs. or 100 lbs. of ammonium diuranate will result in 90 kgs. or 90 lbs. of triuranium octoxide.

Rouez is a recent discovery of a major low-grade sulfide body (± 100 m, 0,6 % Cu, 0.3 % Pb, 1 ,5 % Zn, 21 g/t Ag, 1.5 g/t Au) in a populated farming area of Brittany, France, some 30 kilometres northwest of Le Mans. The discovery is the result of an airborne electro- magnetic (INPUT) survey. It is the first time that the INPUT method has been used in France. The survey Gas successful in spite of the numerous interferences normally found in populated areas. The lack of a good drainage system would not allow the discovery of Rouez using stream sediment geochemistry alone. Ground geophysical surveys confirmed the airborne work and gave sufficient information to make the first hole a discovery hole. The deposit is Proterozoic in age and sediment-hosted. The metamorphism is low grade.
