Research is probably the least understood and the most underrated or overrated, depending on the circumstances, function of the corporate enterprise. Some companies become engaged in research because they consider it to be vital to their very existence, others in order to develop new business, and some with no clearer objective than to keep up with the competition. Whole new industries have resulted from research activities, such as the Xerox copier, the transistor, the computer, and have affected considerably our way of life. Companies have prospered or perished by pursuing the successes or failures of their research organizations. However. despite the tremendous effect that research has had on our modern civilization and the billions which are spent on it annually, we have not as yet been able to develop many hard and fast rules as to how to conduct it effectively and to a successful end.1 This section discusses the role of research in the United States and in the mineral industry and describes a few of the criteria and guidelines which have been developed to assist in increasing the probability for success in industrial research. Broadly speaking, the purpose of industrial research is to make a significant contribution to the long-term viability and the profitability of the sponsoring company. The sum total of technological developments has been a principal factor in establishing the United States as a world leader and the controlling element in the nation's balance of trade with foreign powers. The international aspect of most mineral commodities is a significant factor in the business decision-making of most domestic mining companies and should be an important factor in the operation of research and development (R & D) programs in these companies. The National Science Board has reported that in recent yean other nations have been gaining on the United States over practically the entire range of science. 2,3 On the positive side, the NSB reported a strong position for the US in the results derived from its investment in R & D. If the United States is to maintain a favorable trade balance, it must create new know-how through technological innovation in order to create new industrial products, processes, and services for which there is a global demand. As expressed by Chauncey Starr, president of the Electric Power Research Institute, "Unlike resources found in nature, technology is a man-made resource whose abundance can be continuously increased, and whose importance in determining the world's future is also increasing."' In recent years, the greatly in- creased pressures for environmental quality and energy conservation have enhanced further the role of technical innovation in insuring the future survival of the domestic industry. Technology is the challenge of American industry, and it is a challenge which the mineral industry must also accept, for processed minerals are the very raw materials and energy on which all of industry is based, it is technology which makes a mineral deposit into an ore reserve. The Natural of Industrial R D Research is usually thought of as being either basic or applied. Basic or fundamental research is the quest for knowledge and need not have any practical objective. Applied research is the search for a solution to a particular problem and therefore has a specific objective beyond the acquisition of new knowledge. Development is the next stage to the applied research experimentation and it generally consists of larger-scale tests to establish the technical and economic feasibility of the new process or product and to provide design information for its industrial implementation. The terms research and development are usually interconnected for the good reason that in many cases it is difficult to define where one ends and the other begins. For instance, in many cases, thermodynamic, kinetic, corrosion, and other research studies, which are needed to provide design data for an industrial plant, may prod in parallel with the pilot plant activities preparatory for this plant in order to conserve time. Often the final stages of a development project may involve the trial production of a new product for markeing tests or the trial operation of a new process on a "semi-industrial" scale pilot plant. Mill liner design is an important factor in grinding. Testing and selection of the optimum liner profile for a given set of mill operating conditions can improve mill capacity, liner life, and liner wear rate At a time when mill avilability is at a premium, production costs are going up, and lead time for mill liner castings is a year or more, the mill liner that grinds best, lasts longest, and costs least is a necessity for economic mill operation. In testing four mill liner profiles for 13' x 12' overflow ball mills, Climax found that an improved design increased mill tonnage by 3 tons per hour while reducing finish grind by 1.7% + 100 mesh, reduced liner wear rate, and almost doubled liner life.

The Hardy Cross iterative method is the most popular technique for solving a ventilation network problem with natural air splitting. This method tradition-ally solves each mesh equation by an approximation during each iteration. It is thus interesting from both theoretical and computational viewpoints to be able to solve for an exact solution to the mesh equation. Presented in this paper is an algorithm for computing the exact solution to the mesh equation with a variable fan pressure. The algorithm uses signum functions for air quantities to generate an alternative mesh equation in the form of a quadratic equation, which has two solutions defined by the well-known quadratic formula. The condition that the derivatives of the alternative and the original equations must be the same provides a basis for the correct choice between the two solutions.

Phosphate mines in Florida are continuing to encounter higher dolomitic content host rock with the phosphate pebbles(1) necessitating a change in grinding conditions and/or circuits, One of these changes is to install hydrocyclones and close circuit the mill as opposed to the traditional open circuit grinding plant. Close circuiting of the grinding mill with hydrocyclones allows one to take advantage of reduced process mill power requirements by circulating the coarse mill discharge back into the mill for multiple chances of particle breakage. Additionally, as in this case, the hydrocyclones de-slime the pebbles, allowing for more efficient use of grinding power by reducing the amount of dolomitic material recycled to the mill.

The filter is an apparatus designed to hold the filter medium. At such a medium takes place the entire liquid-solid or gas-solid separation process. Hence, the medium is really the essence of filtration. Yet, the medium, an originally clean porous substance with trapped solids in it, is perhaps the most neglected part of filtration research. Basically three problems prevail at the medium: 1) Penetration of solids and their blinding of the medium and the influence of such blinding on the resistance to flow. ii) The behavior of the medium in long term repetitive filtration. iii) The filter effect phenomenon whereby the flow rate on filtering an apparently clear liquid through a medium decreases with time. This study undertakes to investigate these fundamental processes.

The Bureau of Mines' Tuscaloosa Research Center is conducting research to develop a basic understanding of solid-liquid separation in order to improve the dewatering of fine particle slurries. In the present investigation capillary suction time (CST) of kaolin slurries was determined. The average specific resistance of the cake was also determined by fitting the CST data to the theoretical equations used in this paper. The experimental data were analyzed by a powerful computer-based method, chemometrics, that uses statistical techniques to remove error and to find the number of physically significant factors contributing to the data. Results showed that two significant factors explain the CST data.

A comprehensive flotation study has been carried out on a Chinese fluorspar ore using the packed flotation column developed at Michigan Technological University. The results are compared with that of a conventional mechanical flotation method on the same feedstocks. Key factors controlling flotation performance of both methods are evaluated based upon a simple statistic design. The flotation concentrate produced in one stage of the packed column has 4-S% higher recovery and much lower silica impurity content than that produced by up to six stages when a conventional mechanical cell is used. The results also show that the packed column flotation process is particularly suitable for recovery of finer fluorspar particles.

An entirely new concept in the effective utilization of magnetic, energy has resulted in a major break-through in the design of magnetic separation equipment. One of the first applications of this concept has resulted in the development of a Permanent Magnetic Wet Drum Separator with strength .and operating characteristics equal to Electro Wet Drum Separators. Prior to this development when strength and adjustability were required, electro wet drums were specified even with all their drawbacks. The electros, by nature, are subject to coil failure or burnout, over-heating and loss of strength, high power consumption and generally high maintenance. Now the high strength and the adjustability, formerly the exclusive property of electros, has been engineered into permanent wet drum separators. These units combine maximum field strength in the separation zone with strength adjustment to suit changing conditions. Adjustment can be effected while the drum is in operation without stopping either the feed or the drum.

The reaction kinetics of the acidulation of Moroccan phosphate rock (32% P?05) using 45% nitric acid were investigated using the Shrinking Core Model (SCM) , a newly developed Diffusion Model (DM) and a newly developed Combined Reaction and Diffusion Model (CRDM). This was achieved buy conducting a number of experiments in a controlled batch reactor system at different temperatures. The conversion and the reaction rate were calculated at different time intervals. The SCM based on reaction time and the CRDM characterize the acidulation process of phosphate rock. Diffusion of nitric acid and the products of acidulation at the early stages of reaction through the phosphate rock were found to be the rate-controlling step, resulting in a dif- fusion coefficient, which controls the mass transfer process. The reaction kinetics were found to fit first-order kinetics especially during early stages of reaction time. The deviation of the kinetics from first-order at later stages was due to the fact that the overall reaction was mass transfer controlled with respect to nitric acid and products diffusion.

In this investigation, the changes in the grindability of both ulexite and colemanite related with the different structural modifications created by the heat treatment were examined with respect to work index (Wi). The effects of the heat treatment temperature and time on grindability index were also investigated. It was observed that, heat treatment significantly affected on the grindability of ulexite. The work index of original ulexite was found 7.11 kWh/shton and decreased to 3.5 kWh/shton level within 200-480°C for 60 minutes. On the other hand, the work index of original colemanite was found as 6.48 kWh/shton and no appreciable change was observed when heated up to 320°C. Thermally assisted comminution can be used to improve the grindability characteristics of ulexite. Besides, the different behaviour of ulexite and colemanite under heat treatment can be used for their separation. The artificial mixture of ulexite and colemanite could be separated with over 90% recovery by utilizing their different grindability characteristics by thermal treatment, semi-autogeneous grinding and screening.

Respirable crystalline silica (RCS) found in dust generated by various mining processes is an important occupational hazard in the underground coal-mining industry. Exposure can lead to disabling and incurable diseases, including coal workers’ pneumoconiosis (CWP), silicosis and lung cancer [1,2]. Clusters of rapidly progressive CWP have been observed in the Appalachian regions of eastern Kentucky and southwestern Virginia, and recent cases have been generally more severe and showing more rapid progression. CWP is approximately four times as common among long-tenured underground coal miners in central Appalachia than long-tenured underground miners in the rest of the United States, and 20.6 percent of long-tenured underground miners in central Appalachia were suffering from the disease as of 2017.

The Morenci/Metcalf porphyry copper mining operation, located in southeastern Arizona, currently processes approximately 91,000 tonnes of ore per day and has copper ore reserves estimated to be in excess of one billion tonnes. Functional groups within the Geology Department (currently staffed with six professional and two support personnel) include mine geology, project geology, and hydrogeology. The primary task of mine geologists is daily preblast bench face mapping with grade and mill amenability estimates. Auxiliary duties include detailed in-pit metal distribution evaluation, mineragraphic work and flux quarry geology. Project geologists conduct exploration and preliminary development projects both within and outside the Morenci district and provide support to ore reserve block modeling and geotechnical work performed by the Morenci mine engineering group. Hydrogeologists handle exploration for and development of groundwater resources and groundwater flow modeling, mine dump leach solution penetration and recovery evaluation, and tailing dam water reclamation.

The East Bay Municipal Utility District (EBMUD) delivers water to the San Francisco Bay Area through an aqueduct system extending from the Sierra Nevada Mountains to the East Bay. This aqueduct system, the Mokelumne Aqueducts, are comprised of three 82-mile long steel pipelines. The portion of the aqueducts crossing the Sacramento-San Joaquin River Delta is recognized to be vulnerable to seismic and flooding hazards. Previous studies evaluated alternatives for mitigating these hazards and increasing the reliability of the aqueducts for the next 100 years. The preferred solution involves construction of a 16.5-mile tunnel across the Delta and re-routing the existing aqueducts through this tunnel

In business, as in life, that is usually the best path to follow.The instant access to people and information provided by 21st-century technology continues to push businesses in all industries toward greater efficiency and unheard-of levels of modernization. And in the world of mining, the embrace of advanced technology is all about managing risk.However, even in this age of digital information overload, some mine sites still require employees to physically download data from individual trucks to monitor payload data and inspect road conditions using a clipboard. What’s more baffling is that other mine sites still have no way of tracking tons moved at all.This isn’t due to a lack of innovation in the industry. Quite to the contrary, there is an abundance of new technology available that provides real-time monitoring of vehicle movements and tracks road conditions without the intervention of people. So why are owners reluctant to embrace advances in mining tech?Gauging the value of changeSurvey data has traditionally been captured by ground laser scans and LIDAR systems. A mine site surveyor would drive around the pit with a truck-mounted scanner to generate a point cloud. This process would be completed every few days and would take an entire day.The many cons of this method far outweigh the pros. First, it provides no visual data. If an operation has moved beyond the roller wheel and tape measure, visual pit models and LIDAR scans are typically completed once every six to 12 months by an aerial flyover, but such sporadic information gathering isn’t likely to result in the most actionable data. Moreover, given the high cost (in terms of both money and time), the numerous safety and liability issues, and the lack of flexibility in scheduling, manual processes are more trouble than they are worth.Overall, while miners are excellent operators who value innovation, their employers often try to outsource it or acquire innovators instead of investing in existing technology that can improve current operations. The ventilation of coal mines has long been a major challenge for the mining industry. Prior to the 1969 Health and Safety Act, mine ventilation planning was almost entirely handled by individuals in mine operations and engineering who had extensive practical experience. Their background and expertise was sufficient to deal with existing ventilation problems and planning. A recent decline in the number of qualified individuals combined with more stringent state and federal regulations have necessitated a thorough engineering oriented approach to ventilation in mine planning design. To plan for an existing mine, a thorough ventilation survey must be conducted to determine the capabilities of the existing ventilation network. A ventilation survey also provides considerable useful data for long range planning. Essential information such as friction factors, entry resistance, and potential ventilation problem areas is gained from the survey data. With this information a comprehensive computer analysis can be conducted to evaluate alternative mine plans. This evaluation of mine plans is essential to minimize the number of shafts required while still maintaining the quality of mine ventilation. Using an existing mine as an example, this paper outlines a detailed procedure for organizing, con-ducting, and evaluating a ventilation survey. In addition, specific ventilation problem areas are isolated and alternative methods for their solution are considered. Furthermore, a long range mine plan is evaluated and the most feasible variation of the plan is selected.

Utility coal specifications usually contain a requirement for a maximum moisture content in order to prevent coal handling problems and to minimize evaporative losses in the boiler. As most coal cleaning processes are water-based, dewatering and sometimes drying steps are required to meet moisture specifications. Screens are often used for dewatering, with centrifuges and filters used to further reduce moisture in many cases. Algorithms to predict the performance of screens were developed for the Coal Cleaning Simulator running under Aspen Plus during a project sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy and the Electric Power Research Institute. These algorithms include calculations for the size separation and a calculation for moisture content of the oversize product based on particle size and specific gravity distribution. This paper discusses the algorithm for predicting the moisture content of coal dewatered by screens.

To minimize SO2 emission and the particulate problem during combustion of high sulfur coal fines is to agglomerate these fines in the presence of limestone. At subsequent combustion process, the sulfur in coal is oxidized and reacts with calcined limestone to form calcium sulfate in ash, while the base carbon is converted to clean energy. Seventy percent of sulfur retention can be achieved at Ca/S mole ratio of 3 at a temperature range of 500-400°C. The sulfur fixation in agglomerates involves the complex mass transfer and multiple successive reactions. The rate expressions have been developed to describe the progress of sulfur fixation in the agglomerates during combustion.

In an increasingly environmentally conscious world, mining's importance to society has often been misunderstood and even maligned by the public. Extreme and impractical ideas have often been presented to children because of the lack of accurate, timely resource materials available to educators. In the late 1960s. two mining engineers, S.P. "Pi" Warren and C.L. "Lindy" Barker, became aware of this situation. They proposed to develop a summer field course to provide a factual overview of the minerals industry for teachers. The pair believed that teachers could become better informed to educate students, and future generations, about mining. These two Colorado Mining Association (CMA) members felt that such a course could reduce much of the misunderstanding about this vital industry. This could be done by providing a balanced perspective of mining, not only for kindergarten-through-grade-12 teachers, but also for the students they would be teaching during their careers. Students who better understood the minerals industry could better formulate an unbiased view of it. The course would seek recognized authorities from industry, academia and government who would lecture in their respective fields of expertise. The course would provide a total concept of the coal, aggregate, metals and industrial minerals industries. It would include geology, geophysics, exploration, mining, processing, marketing, product applications, economic, mining history, careers, and environmental responsiblity. When possible, site visits would permit educators to view operations and to meet the men and women who are industry leaders. Teachers would pay a small tuition fee. The balance of the program expenses for each teacher would be paid through scholarships provided by industry and individuals. The "total concept" idea obtained the support of the minerals industry. The support of CMA's Education Committee and the Colorado School of Mines (CSM) was obtained in 1968. Colorado's Commission on Higher Education approved teacher recertification credits through CSM's Office of Special Progams and Continuing Education for those successfully completing the program. The first six-week series of classes presenting the total concept of the indus¬try was held at CSM in 1969. In 1977, the CMA Education Foundation Inc. (CMAEF) was established as a Colorado nonprofit corporation. The "Total Concept of the Mining Industry" (Total Concept) course was placed under its sponsorship. CMAEF is dedicated toward this continuing education program (Table 1). In 1994, the course was streamlined to four-weeks for six hours recertification credit.
