Acid mine drainage (AMD) is a serious environmental problem that preoccupies the Canadian Mining Industry. Considerable amounts of money are spent every year in an effort to prevent or reduce the acid mine drainage phenomenon. AMD occurs when sulphide minerals (ex. pyrite) contained in rock are exposed to air and water and subsequently oxidise to produce low pH water. This acid effluent has the potential to mobilise any heavy metals contained in the rock. Coating the sulphide minerals with silicates is a new promising technology to reduce AMD. Pynte is treated with a solution containing H2O2, sodium silicate and a buffering agent. H2O2 oxidises a small part of pyrite producing ferric iron (Fe3+) ions. These ions subsequently react with the silicate ions to produce ferric hydroxide-silica that precipitates on the pyrite surface producing a passive coating. This silicate coating can protect the grains of pyrite from oxidation. This paper presents a series of experiments that confirm that silicate coating can considerably reduce AMD.

A research program is currently in progress at the University of British Columbia to determine the potential of composite cable bolt reinforcement in Canadian mines. Several prototypes of glass fibre cable bolts have been tested. Their evaluation consisted of lab testing at the University of British Columbia, United States Bureau of Mines (Spokane) and trial installations at Detour Lake, Winston Lake, and Myra Falls Mines. A market analysis of cable bolts within the Canadian mining industry has been completed. Fibre reinforced polymer composites have a high potential as cable bolt reinforcement in mining applications. They prove to be a viable alternative to steel cable bolting.

This paper is devoted to a discussion of the factors governing design of concentrators for large grinding circuits. Emphasis is placed on the manner in which use of ever larger grinding mills has affected the size of grinding bays, service cranes, gear reducers and electric motors, and the selection of ancillary equipment for cushioning of the starting load of large mills. Information is presented on the effect of using large grinding mills on the capital and operating costs of concentrators, e. g. : (Fig. 1) ? Benefits in lower cost of mills, drives and materials handling equipment, plant space, power, grinding media, operating labor and maintenance, and in ease of instrumentation and automation. ? Penalties in distribution of materials from the grinding mills to multiple lines of equipment which have not been developed to commensurately large sizes, and higher cost of ancillary equipment.

The Endako, British Columbia, deposit was initially discovered in 1927 by two local men, Charles H. Foote and Alf Lagdon, who were at that time on a hunting expedition. Four mineral claims were located to cover an area of quartz-molybdenite float that was centered on two small ridges. They subsequently uncovered a 0.5-m (1.6-ft) wide vein on which an inclined shaft was sunk to a depth of 8.3 m (27.2 ft) in 1934. Additionally, a short adit was driven to intersect another vein. Numerous trenches and small pits were also dug. Small test shipments of vein material from this early work were sent to G.S. Eldridge and Co. in Vancouver for metallurgical testing. A concentrate assaying 89.2% MoS, was produced with a recovery reported as 93.3%. The concentrate was essentially free of copper, arsenic, and phosphate. The property was examined by many geologists and engineers during 1934 to 1952, but the only work done was undertaken by the owners in order to maintain their claims in good standing. In 1952, Kennco Explorations (Canada) Ltd. carried out a limited program of bulldozer trenching, sampling, and geological mapping before relin- quishing their option. In 1956, American Standard Mines Ltd. acquired an option on the property, but no assessment work was apparently recorded and the property was allowed to lapse. The key claims were restaked in 1959 by C. Riley and H.T. James of Vancouver. The property was optioned from the new owners by Andrew Robertson in July 1961, and a small amount of trenching was conducted. Robertson, on behalf of his own company, R & P Metals Corp., reoptioned the property in January 1962. The initial results of this work were favorable and justified further exploration. The additional finances required to continue the program resulted in the formation of Endako Mines Ltd. (N.P.L.) on June 21, 1962. Field work by R & P Metals and the first Endako Mines exploration was directed by Bob Couts.

The thickness of the laminated beam modeled in this study is based on bridging potential and TDR measurements. The laminated beam stiffness is based on the effective stiffness of an equivalent transformed section. The maximum deflection of this near-surface laminated beam is compared with the maximum measured surface subsidence. The spreadsheet provides a rational technique to graphically display the character of the overburden and potentially allows prediction of a subsidence factor based on boring logs and the proposed mine plan. The U.S. Department of the Interior, Bureau of Mines (Bureau), utilizes a commercially available computer spreadsheet program in combination with a modified version of Bieniawski's Rock Mass Rating (RMR) system to characterize the geology overlying high extraction coal mines. The spreadsheet program calculates a RMR for each bed based on the lithology, thickness, and engineering properties, which are determined from boring logs and laboratory tests. Once the RMR is calculated the spreadsheet has two major functions. First, the spreadsheet calculates values used to graphically represent the character of each individual bed in the overburden. It calculates an in situ deformation modulus using an empirical rela¬tionship between the modulus and the RMR and then uses this effective modulus along with additional parameters that are based on mine geometry to calculate the bending stiffness and bridging potential for each bed. Second, the spreadsheet creates a transformed section that allows groups of beds to be modeled as an elastic beam. It then calculates a bridging potential for the entire rock mass. The bridging potential of the rock mass is a single value that takes into account both the geology of the overburden and the geometry of the mine. It seems reasonable that there would be a strong correlation between the bridging potential, the overburden response to high extraction mining, and the subsidence ratio. The results presented in this paper focus on the relationship between the bridging potential of individual beds and the deformation measured using Time Domain Reflectometry (TOR). Subsurface displacements measured over seven high extraction coal mines in southern Illinois were correlated with the bed stiffness and bridging potential profiles. Based on these correlations it was evident that the process of caving and subsidence over these high extraction mines involved momentary bridging by individual beds or groups of beds and the ultimate development of a laminated beam near the surface.

Diesel particulate matter (DPM) is a common and well-known health hazard in the mining environment. The current approved method for monitoring both the organic and elemental carbon (OC, EC) portions of DPM is a laboratory method with a turnaround time of approximately one week. In order to evaluate exposure levels and take corrective action before overexposures occur, a portable real-time device capable of quantifying both OC and EC is needed. To that end, researchers from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) designed and tested a device based on narrow bandpass optical filters that is capable of targeting infrared absorbance bands associated with DPM. Five optical bandpass filters were chosen based on previous work quantifying DPM using Fourier-transform infrared (FT-IR) spectrometry. The resulting device, referred to as a filtometer, is optimized to exclusively determine DPM and could serve as a cost-effective, field-portable alternative to laboratory-grade FT-IR analysis and instrumentation. The performance of the filtometer was investigated by calibrating FT-IR data from DPM (dependent variable) to the filtometer spectra (predictor variables) using a partial leastsquares (PLS) and ordinary least squares (OLS) approach. Block cutter machines have been extensively used in natural stone industry, which is a sub-section of mining industry. In this study, the costs occurring in plate losses cut from Bilecik beige marble with a circular saw block cutter machine have been predicted using Statistical Process Control (SPC) techniques. One of SPC techniques is Shewhart control charts such as mean control chart. These charts have been efficiently at determining the plate losses. The costs occurring in plate losses have been calculated by using the result of Shewhart control chart. Finally, this study presents the necessity and usefulness of SPC techniques in assessment of natural stone industry.

In this decade mining companies in western Canada have searched for reliable and inexpensive ways to improve mine productivity. Truck dispatching systems, equipment vital sign monitoring and sensing, vehicle guidance systems, have all been considered. In this paper the off -highway vehicle monitoring systems used or planned to be installed at surface coal mines in western Canada are described. The monitoring systems are divided according to their function and application; installation and testing procedures are described, as well as the economic benefits to the mining operation.

YOPES 17.1.1--CURRENT The history of surface mining essentially is one of mining coal, copper, iron and aluminum ores, of placer mining gold and tin, and of pits and quarries producing clays, gypsum, phosphate rock, sand, gravel and stone. Table 17-1 is a summary of the estimated world and United States production of crude metallic and non¬metallic ores and coal in 1969. It includes estimates of the quantities produced by surface-mining methods. Two-thirds of the 10 billion tons are mined from the surface, ranging from a third of the coal. 57% of the metallic ores, and nearly all clays, stone, sand and gravel. Production by surface methods in the United States, parallels that of the world with one exception: about 90% of the copper and iron ore is mined from the surface, whereas elsewhere only about half the copper ore is surface mined. In Canada, surface mining of the Athabasca tar-sand deposits is a recent large-scale unique operation. In surface mining of coal and, to a lesser extent, metallic ores, much waste is stripped, but in nonmetallic pits and quarries the ratio between waste and ore usually is small. Marketing is the linchpin of the industrial-mineral (IM) industry. Without markets and consumers for IM products, all other associated IM activities are superfluous. The simple existence of an IM deposit does not mean that it can be exploited. A dynamic interaction between exploration (geology), mining, processing, transport, marketing, sales, and consumers is required for profits. Geology dictates the existence of a deposit, but markets dictate its development, and transportation provides the connection. This is true to such an extent that marketing commonly is called the exploration phase of IMs. Marketing is strategic and includes long-range market-development and planning activities, whereas selling is tactical and more focused on day-to-day consumer interactions. Each will help the other when properly done. Many producers of IMs have failed because of inadequate marketing skill, information, and practice. Over many years at the Montana Bureau of Mines, the many developers seeking technical assistance to find an IM deposit, but who had no marketing plan, always failed. In contrast, the few who sought assistance first on marketing, with the IM deposit to be found later, always succeeded (Richard Berg, personal communication, 1998). Marketing has many facets helped by geologists who must be aware of what marketing is attempting to do. A geologist needs to understand many aspects of IMs: location (deposits, plants, consumers), processing (specifications), transportation (truck, rail, barge, ship), competition (local, regional, national, international), substitutes, pricing, and new developments and market forces of all kinds. Some needed skills are not taught formally to geologists, so well-rounded self-education and on-the-job training are the way a geologist normally enters into IM marketing. The IM geologist generally is associated with marketing either by helping to prepare a market study or by acting on the results of one. Preparing a market study is a two-part process. The first part is relatively simple but requires a time-consuming collation of data into an IM survey (mostly past-and present-oriented). The more difficult and much more important second part entails expanding the IM survey into a market evaluation (mainly future-oriented) that emphasizes forecasting, timing, location, and specific products. A market evaluation generally boils down to formulating the right questions to ask of the right persons. One very good question to ask is, "What could be the market for this specific IM?" while thinking for yourself without excessive recourse to gossip, rumors, promoters, developers, or (at times) IM experts. The evaluation must prove that market potential exists and suggests a marketing plan. Effective marketing is an ongoing process, with the initial marketing plan modified over time, using wide and continuous input to avoid tunnel vision. Industrial-mineral markets are based either on commodity (lower-priced, basic-processing) minerals or specialty (higher-priced, value-added) minerals. IM marketing methods are either product-driven (commodity minerals), a more traditional approach, or market-driven (specialty minerals), but these are neither mutually exclusive nor is one always better than the other. Focusing too much on specialty minerals can lead to problems. A blend of commodity products with specialty products commonly lowers risk and enhances long-term profits. The highest profits occur in specialty minerals at the cost of higher risk and complexity and require intelligent marketing, versatile technical services, and creative research and development. Industrial minerals are best served by an industrial-marketing approach rather than a consumer approach. Modern industrial marketing emphasizes the consumer using the "marketing concept." The marketing concept focuses all management and operational activities on total consumer management and satisfaction similar to the total quality management approaches to excellence.

The Haile Gold Mine is one of the earliest gold discoveries in the eastern United States as well as one of the largest gold producers from that region. Gold was first discovered in the gravels of what is now known as Haile Gold Mine Branch in 1828 on lands then owned by Colonel Benjamin Hale (spelling not the same). Small placer workings were immediately started and it was not long before the surrounding residual soils and saprolites were also found to contain gold. Following the presence of gold in the residuum eventually lead to the discovery of the underlying gold-bearing lodes that actually outcropped in saprolite form where not masked by heavy vegetation or a thin veneer of Coastal Plain sand. The earliest attempts at production, immediately after discovery, utilized slave labor, washing gravel and residuum from leased tracts that were 15m (50 ft) square. Several at- tempts at small milling operations were made during the en- suing decades, but there was really no substantial or successful production until the 1880s.

Concern about environmental pollution goes back many centuries, but until recently most efforts to control it have been perfunctory and spasmodic, aimed largely at coal smoke and other visible pollutants. Air pollution is to a large degree a byproduct of our economic development, and scientific knowledge of the causes and character of such pollution is more extensive than the technology to handle the waste byproducts of our industrial civilization. The removal of all constituents foreign to the air from the effluents produced by an industrialized society is obviously impractical at this time. There is widespread difference of opinion regarding acceptable ambient air concentration levels for the Various pollutants produced by combustion processes, but there is basic agreement that the pollution of the atmosphere must be controlled and eventually reduced. The magnitude of the air pollution problem has been increasing rapidly because our expanding economy calls for an ever-increasing consumption of energy, and fossil fuels are a principal source of energy. For example, the consumption of electricity has been increasing at an average annual rate of approximately 8 percent over the last 10 or 1.5 years. Table 1 shows the estimated emission of the principal pollutants into the atmosphere in 1966. The approximately 90 million automobiles, trucks, and buses on American highways contribute the largest proportion of pollutants to the atmosphere, but that fact does not alter the growing problems of the coal industry. You will note that sulfur oxides, particulates, and nitrogen oxides are all products of the combustion of coal. Of these air contaminants, sulfur oxides are now receiving major emphasis in terms of research to develop effective means for control, Table 2 shows that the combustion of coal produces approximately 60 percent of the sulfur oxides discharged to the atmosphere. While the utilization of coal is the principal source of particulate matter, this is not considered as serious a problem as it was in the early part of the century because of technological developments that have produced sound methods for the removal of particulates from waste gas streams.

Remote sensing is being tested for its ability to identify the severity of impact on streams that are subjected to contaminated mine drainage (CMD) in the Southern Anthracite Coalfield of Pennsylvania. Airborne digital multispectral video images of acidic and near-neutral CMD are being compared with field spectra, water chemistry, mineralogy, and microbiology. Spectral differences in the visible region of the electromagnetic spectrum are caused by the presence of schwertmannite in the acidic precipitates and ferrihydrite in the near- neutral precipitates. The acidic CMD averages 1,500 mg/L sulfate and has bacteria coated with schwertmannite; the near-neutral CMD averages 87 mg/L sulfate and has bacteria coated with ferrihydrite.

A method of monitoring production information (raw tonnage and machine state) from each working section has been developed. The method is based on the sensing of electrical parameters in each section load center, and the reporting of this information through the existing mine-wide monitoring system. A decision-theoretic type of pattern classification technique has been used to define the machine states. The basis of the method is presented in this paper, along with a proposed hardware and software implementation scheme. Information issues central to the development and use of the proposed production monitoring system are also discussed.

Foster-Miller has recently developed a new concept for a highly specialized shaft lining system. This innovative shaft lining system uses a continuous slip forming placement technique, lining the shaft from the bottom up such as in a raised bored shaft. Although this part is not unique, the concept is designed to use polyurethane foam instead of concrete for the liner material. Furthermore, the concept is designed to attain rates of advance of 30 m/h (98 fph). The polyurethane foam liner is designed to be thinner (100 mm or 4 in.) than a conventional concrete liner (300 mm or 12 in.). It will eliminate the high cost associated with the erection and operation of an on-site concrete batch plant. The system will be designed to operate remotely, requiring few personnel for its operation. This system (or parts of it) may be appropriate where fast construction speed is required or where a jointless liner is needed.

This paper is a case study using new laser-terrain-mapping technology by EagleScan, Inc., for creating topographic maps. Holnam, Inc., has used this technology to create maps and volumetric calculations of several mines in the United States. The information is superior to conventional methods through accuracy, manpower, time, and cost. Holnam, Inc., was the first cement manufacturer to use the Digital Airborne Topographic Imaging System (DATIS?). The technology uses the DATIS? to produce high-resolution terrain maps and volumetric assessments of any area. DATIS? is a mapping instrument that integrates (1) a Light Detection and Ranging (LIDAR) instrument to measure terrain elevation using laser light, (2) a large-format digital camera, (3) a relative position Global Positioning System (GPS) to measure aircraft position, and (4) an Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) to measure aircraft attitude. The DATIS? can measure up to 220,000 elevation samples per mil. The system continually collects data on the aircraft's position and measures the time for each laser pulse transmission to return from the ground, giving each sample a GPS reference. The system can operate at night, in overcast sky, and during high-wind conditions and can measure terrain below vegetation cover, unlike standard aerial photography used for traditional surveying and mapping. Surveyed ground-control panels are no longer necessary with this new technology, and only one ground GPS base station located within 60 mi from the aircraft position is required. A computer elevation-point data file is created with the x, y, z coordinates of each laser elevation sample. With this file, CAD engineering programs can create topographic maps that rival products using conventional aerial mapping techniques. Volumetric measurements of stockpiles and pits are also available due to the high density of points collected from an area. This new technology radically changes the turnaround time for map users, giving a product in the format used by today's cartographers. The time line from flight to maps is measured in days instead of weeks.

The Marlin deposit is a low sulphidation Au-Ag, epithermal system, with reserves of more than five million ounces gold equivalent. Marlin was discovered in December 1998, after a nine months grassroots exploration program in western Guatemala, focused on volcanic terrains of the Sierra Madre. Before the Marlin discovery, several gold prospects were found along an east-west corridor of approximately 70 kilometers long, associated to regional faulting systems. The deposit is hosted in faults, within Tertiary andesitic rocks and bedded volcano-sediments. Host-rocks are argillized closer to the surface and propyllitized at depth. Mineralization occurs in multi-stage quartz stockworks and breccia veins.

Indicator simulation allows specification of different continuity of high and low values through the use of grade thresholds. The sequential implementation of indicator simulation has been widely used, but the problem of order relation deviations remains a significant drawback. A new procedure for "Hierarchical Indicator Simulation" is introduced that avoids order relations and offers greater flexibility than the conventional sequential approach. The new implementation simulates all locations at the largest threshold and then considers decreasing thresholds in turn. All nodes with grades that are above the previous threshold are excluded from the domain of the current threshold and therefore, they are not used as conditioning data. The probability of being above or below the threshold is calculated using simple indicator kriging using all conditioning data in the domain, thus the covariance structure is preserved. The theoretical framework of this new approach is fully developed. Practical implementation details are discussed. Application to a copper deposit shows the advantages and drawbacks of the method. Finally, the possibility of incorporating multiple-point statistics is discussed.

A mine fire represents one of the most dangerous and challenging safety issues facing underground mine operators. Given the right circumstances, a mine fire can occur at any location in the active or abandoned mine workings, can quickly grow beyond control, and threaten the welfare and livelihood of the entire underground workforce. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), in partnership with the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA), has been conducting an in-depth program of research addressing mine fire prevention, early and reliable fire detection, and mine fire suppression technologies. One portion of this program is focused on understanding the characteristics of mine fire combustion products and flame spread through large scale deep-seated (firmly established) fire tests and use of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modeling. In this study, two deep-seated fire tests were conducted; one fire consisted of coal material and the other utilized the two most abundant fuel sources found in a coal mine: coal and wooden cribbing blocks. The fires were burned to completion while the combustion products were collected and analyzed. In addition, an array of thermocouples was placed within the body of the material to measure flame spread rate. The coal fire test information was then used to develop a CFD model of the fire. This paper describes the fire tests, provides insight into characteristics of flame spread, and presents the CFD modeling work results.
