The principal thrust of the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Coal Preparation R&D Program is to develop technology to reduce the ash and sulfur contents of United States coals to levels such that the resultant product can be formulated into a high quality solid or slurry fuel that could replace oil or natural gas in both new and retrofit applications. Specifically, the objective is to develop and refine cost-effective physical and chemical beneficiation processes to extract 85-95 percent of the total sulfur and ash. The Coal Preparation program is implemented by the Pittsburgh Energy Technology Center (PETC) and is conducted both in-house and by a cross section of industrial organizations, universities, and national laboratories. Research is subdivided into three areas -coal characterization, beneficiation, and ancillary unit operations. This paper will provide a brief overview of many of the research projects being carried out in these areas in fiscal year 1984.

The effect of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) on growth and respiration of Thiobacillus, thiooxidans, and Thiobacillus ferrooxidans, organisms involved in acid leaching of copper sulfide minerals and uranium oxides, was examined. Oxygen uptake and growth by T. thiooxidans were inhibited after contact with 0.82 mM H2O2. Inhibition of oxygen uptake by T. ferrooxidans occurred at 8.24 mM H2O2, and growth was inhibited after 6 hours exposure to 2.06 mM H2O2. Higher concentrations of H2O2 can be used without detriment to thiobacilli if it is dissipated prior to reaching the oxidation pond or dump surface. Lithium-ion (Li-ion) battery pack fires pose great hazards to the safety and health of miners. A detailed experimental study has been conducted at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health’s (NIOSH) Pittsburgh Mining Research Division (PMRD) to investigate the effectiveness of different fire suppression systems on Li-ion battery pack fire extinguishment. Tests were conducted in a well-ventilated container. Two sizes of battery packs (12 V and 24 V) were heated by heater strips to trigger thermal runaway and fire. Water mist with different flow rates, ABC powder, type D dry chemical, and water mist with F500 additives were used as the fire suppression agents. Multiple thermocouples were installed on the battery packs to measure the temperature evolution during the tests. The results indicate that the water mist with F500 additives is the most effective suppressant among the agents tested. Dry chemicals, however, do quench the fire for a moment, but cannot prevent re-ignition of the battery since they do not provide enough cooling. The findings of this paper can be used to develop safer battery fire suppression techniques in mining environments.

Excavation of underground openings results in the redistribution of the in situ stress into the rock adjacent to the opening. Stress redistribution depends on opening geometry, pillar geometry, material properties, possible confinement, and constitutive models describing the behavior of adjacent rock. This paper presents typical pillar stress distributions for elastic and yielding pillars as a function of opening geometry, material properties, and material constitutive models and highlights the differences between them. Stress distributions are compared with empirical strength profiles that have been developed for coal pillars as well as actual pillar geometries documented for stone pillars.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines is researching the application of solvent extraction technology to highly acidic (pH < 1) copper leach liquors. As increasingly complex copper ores are mined for leaching, use of highly acidic leach solutions maybe necessary to effectively recover the contained metal values. A mixture of two commercially available extractants, based on aldoximes and substituted 8-hydroxyquinoline, which has a high transfer efficiency has been identified. A synthetic leach liquor, containing 5 g/L Cu at pH 0.9 was processed utilizing the mixed extractant and a laboratory SX circuit. The loaded organic was stripped with a synthetic barren electrolyte compatible with electrowinning technology.

Silica sands, primarily in coarse size ranges, are used to prop open fissures or voids created in the bedrock by hydraulic fracturing. This procedure increases the flow of gas or oil or other fluids through the bedrock. The sands used must meet various specifications relating to their physical and chemical characteristics; these characteristics are in turn related to the geologic provenance of the sand deposit. The Jordan Sandstone, a Cambrian formation which is exposed in Minnesota and Wisconsin, meets the specifications of a proppant sand by virtue of its depositional history and its sedimentary properties.

"The application of passive tracer gas sources in underground mines is particularly useful for long-term tracer studies as well as for studies conducted in permissible areas of underground coal mines. The use of passive perfluoromethylcyclohexane (PMCH) sources has been previously demonstrated in underground mines, but this new work details the testing of multiple, distinct tracer compounds compatible with passive sources. A description of their potential application in mine ventilation systems is also provided. Three tracer compounds are detailed: (1) PMCH, (2) perfluoroethylcyclohexane (PECH) and perfluoromethylcyclopentane (PMCP). The release rates of these tracers were examined over a 180-day period at multiple temperatures. The advantages and disadvantages of these sources are presented, along with potential applications in characterizing ventilation circuits, flow through gob and leakage. IntroductionThe use of tracer gases for ventilation applications is an established practice, with various past research projects conducted using sulfur hexafluoride (SF6). Tracer gas techniques have been applied to assess flow rates, dilutions rates and auxiliary ventilation system efficiencies with quick, reliable and accurate results (Suglo and Frimpong, 2002). Perfluorocarbon tracer (PFT) compounds are a new introduction to ventilation and air modeling applications in terms of ventilation flow characterization (Watson et al., 2007).PFTs are liquids that are characterized by low background presence in air, low reactivity, high detectability and low toxicity. A design was proposed, called a permeation plug release vessel (PPRV), to convert PFTs from a liquid to a gas and then release the gaseous tracer in a controlled manner. The initial concept was originally introduced by Brookhaven National Laboratory and refined later to become the PPRV. The PPRV functions by allowing the volatile PFT liquid to become a vapor in a controlled manner. The vapor diffuses through a permeable silicone stopper at a predictable rate proportional to temperature (Zhang and Cloud, 2006)."

The Australian states of New South Wales (NSW) and Queensland, because of their endowment of black coal resources, dominate the production and export statistics for Australian coal. NSW produced 86 million tonnes of saleable coal in 1994, representing a doubling of output since 1980, or a growth of 5% per annum. Asian demand for thermal and coking coal has, of course, driven this growth in NSW. This high Asian demand is forecast to continue and NSW will seek to secure its share. This paper focuses on some of the issues facing NSW in the future, and in particular, examines some of the major new and proposed mining projects.

Maintaining satisfactory air quality in electro-winning tankhouses has been problematic and costly, particularly as plant operating current densities have increased. Conventional approaches, including the use of beads, hollow spheres, surfactants and coalescer devices, have not proved completely effective, requiring that powerful ventilation systems be installed. As workplace and environmental regulations become more stringent, containment of the acid mist at its source is more attractive. An electrode cap system based on this approach has been developed and tested in two commercial copper electrowinning tankhouses. The design, development, installation and cost of the new electrode cap system are described.

"Tumbling mills using balls as grinding media are used extensively in the mining and cement industries to produce fine powders; however, it is well known that the process of size reduction is highly energy-intensive. For this reason, much of today’s comminution research is aimed at understanding grinding mechanisms, by estimating power draft and modeling milling circuits using the discrete element method (DEM). DEM predicts individual particle trajectories, the distribution of energy and contact forces at each collision, lifter wear and power draw. This paper presents a prediction of the discharge particle size distribution using three components, mass balance model (sometimes referred to as a population balance model, PBM), impact energy distribution of the mill obtained from the simulation of the charge motion using DEM and breakage characteristics of particles determined from drop-ball tests. DEM simulation of the charge of a tumbling mill was done using the code MinProSim 1.0 to obtain impact spectra at different operative conditions. Then, the population balance model (PBM), based on impact energy distribution, was used to predict the final particle size distribution in a batch mill and compared with experimental data. It is demonstrated that the DEM-PBM approach allows a reliable solution to predict particle size distribution for tumbling mills. Ideally, the model has to predict size distribution for any operational condition and feed characteristic; however, it has been shown that predictions include some degree of error.IntroductionThe discrete element method (DEM) has recently become a powerful numerical tool that can be used to investigate internal mill charge in ball mills. The early work of Cundall and Strack (1979) used DEM to analyze soil as a discrete medium. Later, the method was improved to simulate the operation of tumbling mills and optimize the design in order to increase the efficiency of energy utilization. Also, it is of great interest to relate ore breakage based on impact energy spectra obtained by DEM simulations and the breakage distribution function used in the PBM to predict particle size distribution in tumbling mills.King and Borgeous (1993) broke single particles in an ultra fast impact load cell to compute the phenomenological parameters in a microscopically more detailed population balance model. Kapur et al. (1997) simulated the size spectra of progeny particles produced by impact grinding as a function of the impact energy. Narayanan (1987), Narayanan and Whiten (1988) and Lira and Kavetsky (1990) estimated the energy-dependent breakage distribution function for scaleup and modeling of industrial ball mills."

Accurately predicting ground control conditions before mining requires a comprehensive exploration approach including photogeologic mapping (satellite and low altitude), delta modeling and, particularly, geophysical logging. In situ properties, density; strength indices; grain size; clay content; and aquifer location, can be estimated with this inexpensive technique. Geophysical measurements can be spot-checked by field or laboratory tests on core samples and by hydrologic (pressure) testing. Each phase of drilling should be accompanied by refinement of the delta model, facilitated by log signatures. Measured properties can then be projected into geologically similar areas. A properly planned program will delineate both the "worst-case" and normal support conditions. Suspect areas can be avoided by mine layout and the mine plan can contain support contingencies for anticipated trouble spots.

The original Radum aggregate plant, built by Henry Kaiser in 1931, is the oldest of the nearly 200 individual operations established by the Kaiser companies. Since that time it has been producing aggregate products primarily for the San Francisco Bay Area. Currently, and for many years, this plant has been listed as the Nation&apos;s No. One aggregate producer. Early this year a new $10,000,000 facility went on line replacing the old plant. Construction of the facilities was performed under the direction of Kaiser Engineers construction management teams. The existing plant continued to operate without interruption during the entire construction period.

In modern iron pelletizing plants fuel consumption has been optimized to such an extent that only minor savings can be expected in the future. Inspite of this fact, different process parameters were studied with a mathematical model and firing tests. The influence on fuel consumption and productivity was established. Furthermore, the adoption of simplified firing patterns was investigated, in particular for coal firing. In view of high costs of oil and natural gas, only substitution of these fuels by coal can substantially reduce production costs. In existing plants partial replacement of oil and gas can be achieved by addition of coal to the iron ore feed and by firing the pellets with pulverized coal. Two systems have been developed for the Lurgi- Dravo travelling grate process which enables coal to completely replace oil or gas. This paper describes in the first part the potentials for fuel savings available in the Lurgi-Dravo process. In the second part, different techniques for the use of coal as fuel in iron or pelletizing plants and in particular the recently developed Lurgi Multistage Coal Injection and Combustion Process (LMC) are discussed. Combined with the LMC process, a wide variety of iron ores and coals - also with high ash contents - can be used in the Lurgi-Dravo travelling grate process.

An economic simulation model was developed to predict the amount of copper recovered from copper oxide deposits and the cost of producing it as a function of the deposit parameters. The economic simulation model includes models of fragmentation design and cost, copper extraction, solution distribution and recovery, effluent solution cutoff grade, and financial analysis. Cost and price indices were also developed to evaluate the economic feasibility of in situ leaching operations as a function of their starting date. Application of the models to various properties having the same area and different ore thickness shows that the effluent solution cutoff grade does not vary with the ore thickness nor with its grade. The percent of copper recovery is, however, shown to increase with the increase in the ore thickness and is independent of the ore grade. it is also shown that while the profit per unit of extracted copper increases with the increase in ore grade or ore thickness, the rate of return on total investment does not show any correlation

INTRODUCTION The application of oil field technology to large diameter hole drilling is beginning to offer a cost effective alternative to conventional shaft sinking methods. The drilling of ventilation and small production shafts are, of course, not new. The major constraint to the drilling of large diameter production shafts has been the inability to drill holes large enough and straight enough to install and operate relatively high volume hoisting equipment. This paper discusses recent advancements in drilling technology as applied specifically to large diameter holes for use in the mining industry. The paper emphasizes the geotechnical and hydrologic considerations in assessing site conditions and their application to drilled shaft technology. The authors worked together on a recent feasibility study for a 6 m (20 ft.) diameter 975 m (3,200 ft.) drilled shaft in New Mexico. Their individual experience in drilling and geotechnical investigations related to shaft sinking is world wide. Salt, a non-metallic mineral whose use dates back to earliest history of mankind, and whose uses cover the widest range for any mineral raw material, is generally of widespread occurrence in commercially recoverable quantities in the oceans, in certain sedimentary rocks, in certain lakes, and in certain underground waters. Passing over geological detail, it may be said that, generally, all of the salt in the world has, at least once in geological history, been in solution in the oceans. The total salt content of today&apos;s oceans, said to equal 4.5 million cubic miles of rock salt, dwarfs the tremendous volume of salt in the sedimentary rocks. In 1958, United States production of salt was about 22 million net tons and world production about 82 million. About 3 percent of United States production is table salt, with chemical, municipal, industrial and agricultural uses taking the remainder. Mississippi River. Figure 1 has been expanded sufficiently to show also those salt occurrences and producing points which might economically ship salt into these states. Although widespread in occurrence, salt deposits and possible production areas generally show very sharp local boundaries. Salt-for non-table use is susceptible to ?place value?, a common problem in low valued raw materials, where transportation costs often exceed the value of the material f.o.b. the production point. Generally only large capacity mechanized salt producing operations can compete in United States markets, as contrasted to the many small local salt evaporators in less industrialized Mexico.

Through the remainder of this century, world consumption of fluorine per ton of primary aluminum produced will continue to be substantially reduced. Growth of the primary industry will offset some of the unit consumption, but demand for new fluorine sources will decline sharply. Continued application of dry fume scrubbing systems will be the most significant factor in reducing demand.

Oil-field brines have been collected and analyzed from Jurassic and Cretaceous rocks in the Mississippi Salt Dome Basin, from Jurassic and Lower Cretaceous rocks, southwestern Arkansas, and from Ordovician and Silurian rocks, southern Michigan. All of these brines are genetically related to evaporites and appear to be brines expelled from halite-bearing rocks, presumably during compaction. The brines in rocks closest to the halite-bearing rocks are uniformly low in lead and zinc suggesting that the metals in metal-rich brines are not acquired within evaporite sequences. The metals in metal- rich brines in Mississippi and in Russia appear to be derived from red beds and may have been originally associated with ferric iron oxyhydroxides. Reduction of these compounds by migrating hydrocarbons appears to release lead and zinc to the associated brines accompanied by the fomation of authigenic ankerite.

The growing need for development of thinner, more erratic, or less easily- mined coals in the Appalachian region requires more detailed analysis of conditions and factors controlling or influencing deposition of these seams. The value of depositional modelling in evaluation of such coals has been demonstrated in many recent studies and publications. Such modelling may be applied to allow prediction of factors varying from regional coal occurrence trends to very local areas of seam discontinuities, but requires thorough utilization of all available types of data. Mapping of general depositional energies, as derived from basic geophysical and driller&apos;s logs, can be applied to specific prediction of coal occurrence, and projection of particular facies as representative of unique depositional features or conditions often proves more applicable to coal character delineation than does mapping of the coal itself. Depositional modelling and trend projection may also serve as a guideline in reserve classification and confidence-levels in reserve estimations.
