Earle Faig Along with other transportation modes, the barge industry will be greatly affected by trends in domestic coal production. Traditionally, coal has been one of the major commodities moved by barge. Now, because of events in the international energy market, coal is finally getting the recognition it deserves as a major component of the country's energy program. Perhaps even more significantly, a series of events has caused other countries to turn to the United States as a source of coal. Although the outlook for coal demand is optimistic, it will be greatly influenced by the ability of the transportation sector to handle the additional traffic. Because of its long experience in moving large quantities of coal, the barging industry is in an excellent position to capitalize on coal's increased popularity. A brief description of the barging industry should facilitate the discussion of coal as it relates to that industry. Barge companies operate on a river system that is over 40 Mm (25,000 miles) long. It includes the East and West Coasts and the Mississippi River System comprised by the Allegheny, Monongahela, Kanawha, Ohio, Illinois, Missouri, Tennessee, Cumberland, Arkansas, Warrior-Tombigbee, and Mobile Rivers, and some smaller tributaries. The Gulf Intracoastal Waterway stretching along the Gulf Coast from Brownsville, TX, to Apalachicola, FL, also is considered part of the inland waterway system. Approximately 1,800 companies operate on the inland river system and have a combined fleet of about 4,400 towboats and 28,000 barges. The fleet of towboats represents 4.8 GW (6.4 million hp) of power. The towboats comprising this fleet vary in size from a small harbor boat to a large line haul boat with 7.5 MW (10,000 hp) of power. The choice of size and power of the boat depends on a number of factors, including the size of the river and operational constraints, such as lock size, river-current rate, and water level. The choice also depends on the tow size. A single tow on a river capable of locking through 15 barges at a time handles up to almost 20 kt (22,000 st), whereas a tow on the lower Mississippi, which has no locks, can accommodate up to 41 kt (45,000 st) of cargo. Because the quality of coal is not typically damaged by exposure to the elements, it is usually moved in open hopper barges, although covered barges are used occasionally. The most frequently used size is the jumbo barge that measures 59 m (195 ft) long by 11 m (35 ft) wide by 4 m (12 ft) deep and can handle up to 1.4 kt (1,500 st) of coal. Advantages of Barge Transportation Barging offers several inherent advantages in transportation of bulk commodities like coal. First, barges can carry large quantities of product. A single jumbo hopper barge can handle 1.4 kt (1,500 st) of cargo while it takes 15 91-t (100-st) capacity rail cars or 57 trucks hauling 24 t (26 st) each to move an equivalent amount of cargo. Thus, barges can move more tonnage with less equipment than competing forms of transportation. Second, barging offers the most fuel efficient means of transportation. Less energy is required to push a load over water than to pull a similar load over land. The amount of pollution attributable to barge traffic is minimal because barges consume less fuel. Third, barging is an inexpensive form of transportation. The inland waterway industry transports about 12% of the nation's freight for about 2% of the total freight bill. This can be attributed to competition between the large number of companies on the river system and competition with other transportation modes. Fourth, barging is an environmentally safe method of transportation. Inland river routes expose fewer urban areas to hazardous substances than rail or truck. And barge spills occur less frequently than rail or truck spills. The industry does pose some disadvantages. The waterway system is constrained by the natural river network, so barges cannot travel on the most direct straight-line route. This means that barging is usually an incomplete form of transportation requiring interface with truck or rail. The industry's market is limited to those geographical areas that are located on or near the rivers. In addition, it is a time-consuming transportation mode, making it impractical for many types of commodities.

A comprehensive study of the environmental conditions of the area affected by the Colfax and Cheswick Power Stations is of extreme importance to Duquesne Light Company. The residents in the valley where the two plants are located have complained for many years about the emissions from the Colfax Plant which is of the 1920 to 1930 vintage and which has a capability of generating approxi¬mately 200 Mw. They were extremely happy to hear that the Company had plans for shutting it down, however, they were extremely unhappy to hear that we were planning to build another even larger one to take its place in the same vicinity, namely the Cheswick Plant with a capability of 570 Mw. They had visions of a plant twice the size of the Colfax Plant and belching out twice as much smoke. A few of the citizens from that area were most vehement at the public hearings that were held by the Allegheny County Air Pollution Bureau for obtaining an installation permit. With two power plants already existing in that area (Duquesne Light Company's Colfax Plant and West Penn Power's Springdale Plant), the primary concern of the Allegheny County Air Pollution Control Bureau was that the Cheswick Station might increase air pollution levels beyond what they considered to be dangerous limits. It became very evident that the Allegheny County Air Pollution Control Bureau would be extremely reluctant to grant installation and operating permits unless they were satisfied that the new plant would not increase local pollution levels and that we were taking sufficient steps to monitor the emissions from our plants and also the ambient air in the general area. We concluded that an extensive air pollution monitoring program must be conducted in the area to determine the effects of the operation of our plants. Longwall mining has gained acceptance as a safe method of maintaining coal production where conventional systems were unsuccessful or uneconomic due to bad roof conditions (Kuti8). One of the major problems confronting American operators involves the correct choice of equipment which should be selected to suit the local mining and geologic conditions for optimum productivity. To achieve this, factors such as rock strengths, local geology, panel geometry, and panel orientation must be examined to optimize production and minimize down time due to ground control problems. Little quantitative information is available in the literature regarding the effects of geologic conditions on American longwall operations, and past implementations of longwall systems appear to have been based largely on experience. When mining engineers are able to assess the geologic conditions both quantitatively and qualitatively, they can more fully optimize equipment selection and panel design.

"In underground mining, machine design is predominantly dictated by mine conditions and individual customer desires. In partnership with Foresight Energy, J. H. Fletcher & Company was tasked to design and manufacture a new roof bolting machine with six independent drilling apparatus on board capable of drilling and bolting the roof and ribs with material handling. This is the first Fletcher® six head machine to be designed and built for the mines in the United States. The machine is intended to work in the Illinois Coal Basin. The objective was to produce a machine capable of drilling and installing six bolts simultaneously with a limited number of operators. The goal of the mine is to decrease the time to bolt a cut to improve the safety level of the current roof bolting method, improve efficiency and to improve the bottom line cost of entry development. The customer wanted four mast feed drills at the front of the machine dedicated to installing roof bolts and then another two mast feed drills behind them dedicated to rib bolts. This dictated the requirement of latched controls, which would allow the operator to start drilling one hole and then latch the controls to be able to move on to the next. To accomplish this, we developed a unique hydraulic latch circuit to maintain operator safety and compliance. Guarding was added to prevent an operator from coming into accidental contact with a latched drill. The result of the design is a machine with a single platform and six independent masts with drillheads: four masts strictly for drilling and installing roof bolts on the front of the platform and then two masts on the back of the platform for rib bolts. The feed and rotation controls at each operator’s station include a latch control for drilling. The latch control will allow the operator to lock in the feed and rotation once the hole has been collared, allowing the operator to move on to the next hole. The rear of the machine is equipped with material handling. There are two material pods with winch controls as well as a mesh rack that includes mesh lift, mesh tilt and mesh sump. The six-head roof bolter allows fewer operators to drill and install roof and rib bolts, which in turn lowers the miners’ roof exposure per cut. This design reduces the operator’s exposure from the inherent pinch points and rotary hazards once he has engaged the latch drilling. Therefore the machine will help to decrease the time to bolt a cut, improving productivity while enhancing the ability to operate the machine safely. INTRODUCTION When mining underground it is necessary to support the roof quickly to prevent it from collapsing after an area has been mined. Since the 1950s, the primary method for supporting the roof has been the installation of roof bolts. Roof bolting is one of the most basic functions yet one of the dangerous jobs in the underground mining operation (1). The Mine Safety and Health Administration’s (MSHA) Health and Safety Accident Classification injury database showed an average of 660 roof bolter operator accidents per year over a 5-year period (1999-2003) (2). The numbers show that roof bolting is the most hazardous machine-related job in underground mining. It represents 39 percent of all machine-related accidents in underground coal mines. In 1993, the U.S. Bureau of Mines conducted a study that has shown the activity of drilling as the most hazardous job task performed by a roof bolter operator, accounting for 31 percent of all roof bolting injuries (3). Almost half (46%) of these drilling injuries were due to falling rocks or coal from the roof. All of these injuries occurred under supported roof. The majority of these injuries (about 99%) are not caused by a major roof collapse but from falls of smaller rock from the immediate roof. This type of roof failure has also been termed “skin fall.”"

Large-scale coal mining will cause environmental problems such as aquifer damage, land excavation and occupation, soil erosion, vegetation damage, and regional landscape damage. The existing coal mine environmental restoration technology is relatively simple, and there is a lack of systematic research on environmental total factors. Based on the mechanism of coal mining damage and the laws of environmental natural succession, the concept of “coal environmental protection mining” is proposed, which combines damage reduction mining and environmental element system restoration. In accordance with the environmental protection principle of “source protection, process damage reduction, and systematic restoration,” a technical system of “coal environmental protection mining” is constructed for the two types of mining damage scenarios: underground mining and open-pit mining. In view of the damage characteristics of underground mining, source environmental protection technology based on optimization of mining process parameters, stability maintenance and damage reduction technology for overlying rock bearing arch shell structure, zoning and time-sharing treatment of surface cracks, and direct drainage irrigation technology for mine water have developed. In accordance with the damage characteristics caused by open-pit mining, land-saving and source reduction damage technology, near-natural stratigraphic reconstruction, topsoil improvement, and environmental storage and utilization technologies for seasonal precipitation have developed. By applying the technology in this paper, the maximum surface settlement value of 12401 working face in Shangwan coal mine was relatively reduced by 25%, the surface cracks have been adjusted from step-type cracks to dynamic small cracks, and since the technical implementation of the Shendong mining area in 2010, the vegetation coverage has increased loss and crushing decreased by 0.06 km2 every year, the environmental restoration period of the dump site was advanced by more than one year, and the vegetation coverage rate increased by 41.78% compared with the background value in the semi-arid area of the victory open-pit coal mine demonstration area. A surface reservoir with a water storage capacity of 400,000 cubic meters has been built, and the seasonal and graded utilization of mine water has been realized. An underground reservoir with a water storage capacity of 1.22 million square meters has been built in the Baorixiler open-pit coal mine.

It has long been understood that extended occupational exposures to respirable mine dusts can lead to chronic lung disease. In underground coal mines, coal workers pneumoconiosis (CWP) and silicosis are major concerns. While many efforts have been made with the aim of understanding the mass-based concentrations and silica contents of respirable dusts under a variety of mining conditions, little research has been completed in characterizing dust at the individual particle level (by composition, size and shape). This study employed scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive x-ray (SEM-EDX) to analyze dust samples collected from an underground coal mine in Central Appalachia. The results indicated that particle characteristics can vary widely between locations, though many trends might be explained based on knowledge of mining conditions. A continuous personal dust monitor (CPDM) was also used during the collection of some samples to determine respirable dust concentrations, which were compared against estimated concentrations based on the particle-level analysis.

Kennecott Corporation, in joint venture with Galactic Resources Ltd., recently began operation of an open pit gold mining and milling facility near Columbia, South Carolina. The deposit consists of two ore bodies (North and South deposits) hosted in deformed and altered meta-volcanics and meta-sediments of the Carolina Slate Belt. This paper describes the rock mechanics and engineering geology investigations conducted for design of interim, ultimate and final reclamation slopes for the South Pit. Emphasis includes the successful use of drill core orientation techniques to confirm complex geologic structure at depth; the development of a three-dimensional rock mass competency model, incorporating surface mapping data, results of bench mapping documentation, field index testing and laboratory testing; and kinematic assessments for design of optimum slopes.

"Several copper projects exclusively utilizing in-situ recovery methods are currently under development in Arizona. Favorable conditions for In-Situ Copper Recovery (ISCR) include a saturated orebody, fracture hosted mineralization, hydraulic conductivity sufficient to effectively inject and recover solutions using wells, and a relatively flat background hydraulic gradient. Safe operation of an ISCR project requires that the operator have the ability to induce and maintain localized hydraulic gradients, thereby controlling the movement of injected and recovered solutions. Benefits of ISCR include reduced initial capital, and a greatly reduced environmental footprint. THE ISCR METHOD EXPLAINED The method chosen to extract a mineral from a deposit is driven by characteristics such as its size, grade and depth of burial. Large lower grade deposits that require significant excavation to access using surface methods are potential candidates for in-situ recovery. ISCR may also be ideal for smaller deposits due to the lower initial capital. However, regardless of the size of the deposit, certain hydrogeologic conditions must be present for ISCR to be successful. In-situ recovery methods do not require excavations of rock from the surface or underground, resulting in a dramatic reduction in surface disturbance when compared to conventional mining. With the ISCR method, what is visible above ground is the processing plant, well heads, piping, process solution impoundments and evaporation ponds. There are no waste rock piles, tailings impoundments, leach pads, or impacts associated with blasting and hauling. Other benefits include reduced initial capital, reduced dust and noise, and lower water use. Early testing of the in-situ copper recovery method by Occidental on the Van Dyke deposit east of Phoenix and by Kennecott at Safford Arizona in the 1970s produced encouraging results, but the permitting regime for a large-scale operation was not yet in place. Additional testing and commercial application of in-situ copper recovery techniques have expanded since the 1980s, most commonly in conjunction with open pit or underground mining operations. For example, several operations in Arizona (San Manuel, Miami East and Tohono) have used in-situ techniques to extract additional copper following conventional mining from parts of the deposits adjacent to open pits or underground workings. Where the rock has been broken up by conventional methods, the method is called “in-place” leaching. The US government has also been involved in assessing in-situ techniques. For example, joint research was conducted by the US Bureau of Mines and industry on the Santa Cruz deposit in Arizona; and both federal and state agencies have been involved to establish the comprehensive permitting regime that exists today. Currently there are several projects in Arizona being evaluated as stand-alone ISCR operations."

Since the dam of cyanidation leaching techniques for precious metals, certain manganese-bearing silver ores have been a problem due to low silver extractions. Since simultaneous occurrence of silver and manganese is common in nature, this situation has made many otherwise attractive silver deposits uneconomic in the past. Several older techniques have been useful but at $1.29 per ounce of silver, the economics were unfavorable. With the new look in silver prices and some improvements in processing technology, neglected silver districts offer new promise.

P.T. Freeport Indonesia operates a mining complex located in the highlands of Papua, Indonesia. This district consists of underground and surface operations. The East Ertsberg skarn system (EESS) is one of the major orebodies in this district. Subsurface caving of the EESS has been carried out in a systematic series of mining lifts dating back almost 30 years. Present production from the third lift deep ore zone (DOZ), has reached 80 kt/d (88,000 stpd) during 2010, with this rate sustained through 2015. The orebody was proven below the existing caving level, with the next vertical block called the deep mill level zone (DMLZ).

In this work, the selective reduction of lateritic nickel ore was carried out using sodium sulfate, sodium carbonate, and sodium chloride as additives. The 5 wt% of anthracite coal, which contains 60.35% of fixed carbon and 1.9% of sulfur, was used as a reductant. All raw materials were mixed homogenously prior to the pelletization process into 10–15 mm of diameter. The reduction process was carried out to 50 g of pellets at 950 °C, 1050 °C, and 1150 °C for 60 min in a muffle furnace at atmospheric pressure. It continued with a wet magnetic separation process to separate ferronickel (concentrates) and impurities (tailings). Iron and nickel grade analysis was performed using XRF, while phase transformation and microstructure were analyzed with XRD and SEM–EDS. The results showed that the sodium sulfate was superior, resulting in the highest nickel grade in concentrate, i.e., 15.06%. The sulfidation mechanism, which could inhibit the metallization of iron, effectively increased the nickel grade in concentrate than decomposition of carbonate and chloridization process. The sulfur content in the reductant also influenced the selective reduction process. It promotes more sulfidation of iron, thus increasing the nickel grade in concentrate.

It is estimated that millions of tons of coal fines are unsaleable each year due to difficulty of drying them economically with conventional mechanical dewatering and thermal drying equipment. The difficulty is due to the fact that coal of small particle size presents a large surface area with polar groups which have a great affinity for water. In order to remove this water thermally, a high temperature is necessary which oxidizes the surface of the coal. This substantially reduces the heating value of the coal. If drying could be satisfactorily carried out at a lower temperature, much more of the heating value of the coal fines could be retained. It was conjectured that acoustic energy applied during the drying process might prove to be of value since acoustic energy has the property of producing cavitation at a liquid-solid interface when the intensity is sufficiently great. This cavitation process produces water at room temperature which can be carried away from the solid surface by a flow of relatively cool air. Hence, moisture removal is made possible at a lower temperature.

In 1977, Congress enacted Title IV of the Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act (SMCRA), providing for an "abandoned ml.ne reclamation fund". This fund, taken from a fee collected from operating coal mines, provides capital for the reclamation process. However, given the number and extent of abandoned mine sites in some states, the question of project selection is important. This paper describes a project in progress to create a Management Information System application for project ranking under multiple objectives. The benefit of this project for the need of new environmental control technologies will be discussed.

1. INTRODUCTION According to the classical economic approach of the open market economy, copper supply should be regulated by market forces which are (a) demand and (b) prices. In fact, demand is of primordial importance because prices are a reflection of supply-demand balance: they go up in times of shortages of supply and down when over-supply situation exists. In the past few years, this basic mechanism of market economy has been under pressure from a number of non-market forces, such as social and monetary problems of sane important copper producing countries; structural changes in copper mining companies through mergers with oil companies; and other factors which greatly contributed to distortion of the basic supply-¬demand equation. As a result, we have faced in the last three years a situation of oversupply rarely seen in the past, with a catastrophic fall in copper prices, huge losses at mines and unprecedented indebtedness of copper producers. This has deep repercussions in the copper business and its future supply outlook. This is particularly so when taking into consideration that high indebtedness and high interest rates conspire against the very survival of some traditional producers. As we write this comment (July of 1985), close to one half of U.S. copper production capacity is closed down, sane of it for good, while the same precarious situation exists in Canada, Australia, Zambia, and some other primary producers who cannot face present low prices with equally low costs. The question is then what this situation means for the medium-¬term future, until the end of this decade, Particularly when taking into consideration the fact that some of the factors influencing it are of a long-term character. 2. SUPPLY-DEMAND SITUATION IN THE LAST FIVE YEARS Since the last boon year, in 1979, when world copper consumption reached a record of 9.8 million metric tons of refined copper, demand dropped to only 9.0 million tons in 1982, when the crisis bottomed out, and then steadily recovered to the level of 9.7 million tons in 1984. Meanwhile, copper production, which in 1979 was only 9.4 million tons, in spite of the fall in demand, grew to 9.7 million tons in 1981 and 1983 and only temporarily was cut to 9.4 million tons in 1982 and to 9.5 million tons in 1984. As a result of this imbalance, hugh copper stocks were accumulated with supply systematically out¬growing demand by over 2 million tons at one time. With the Western World refined copper demand running at an average of 115,000 tons per week, this oversupply was equivalent to between 15 and 18 weeks production, i.e. twice as large as normal. This was immediately reflected in very low copper prices. Another contributing factor to relatively low copper prices was the lack of speculator interest for this commodity. Between 1981 and 1984 the world experienced a very intensive period of wealth distribution, high interest rates and intensive restructuring off world economy and its industrial sector. Therefore, much of the available money was attracted to more lucrative and attractive investments rather than to the lack-luster performance of copper, and for that matter, of the metal sector in general. The much announced and discussed recovery of the U.S. economy since 1983, and particularly in 1984, with an overall growth of the GNP by 6.8% in 1984, happened to be more oriented to the service sector than the industrial sector and therefore this recovery was not adequately reflected in copper consumption nor to metals in general. This put serious doubts about the future demand for copper. Consequently copper prices failed to improve in spite of an apparent fall in stocks and a healthy increase in the demand for copper since 1982. At the time of this writing (July, 1985), although same analysts claim that the available stocks are running at about 8 weeks of supply, which are considered to be below normal, copper prices are still very low at between 65 and 67 cents per pound of copper. Clay mineralogic studies of ore versus barren rocks in the Grants mineral belt show that some combination of chlorite (rosette form), illite, mixed layer illite-montmorillonite, (- Mg-montmorillonite) are penecontemporaneous with uranium minerals in trend ore; these same clay minerals plus kaolinite are related to the roll type ore near the main redox front of the Grants mineral belt. Clay minerals from barren rocks are characterized by a greater abundance of Na-montmorillonite, kaolinite, and face-to-edge form chlorite. Chlorites from ore zones contain much more vanadium than do chlorites from barren rocks. Trend ore probably formed from southeasterly flowing waters following paleochannels in the Late Jurassic. These deposits are found almost entirely in reduced rocks, and organic carbon may have been an important reductant to remove U-V-Se-Mo from solution as carbonate from ore zones contains some organic carbon based on stable iso¬tope studies. Uplift, remobilization and reprecipitation of some of the trend ore resulted in the formation of redistributed ore, some of which possesses a roll type geometry. Mineralization for the roll type ore was apparently controlled by sulfide-sulfate equilibria at or near the main redox front in the Grants mineral belt. Trend and roll type ore possess different assemblages of clay minerals and different trace element abundances. Laramide faults cut both trend and some roll type ore. Stack ore is found in Laramide fault zones. Limited oxygen isotopic data from clay minerals in two mines at Ambrosia Lake in reduced rocks indicate probable preservation of ancient, formational waters and no evidence for infiltration by young meteoric waters. This information, plus the pre-Laramide faults, suggest, but do not unequivocally prove, that the main redox front has been relatively stable since its formation, probably some time in the Cretaceous. Younger encroachment of the redox front in post-Laramide is proposed by others, however, and the problem is unresolved. Uranium for the deposits was most likely carried in solution as an oxyion, probably as (UO2(CO3)2.2H2O)2- or (UO2(HPO4)2)2-, although organic transport cannot be entirely ruled out. Oxyions of vanadium, selenium, molybdenum and possibly arsenic and antimony, are interpreted from Eh-pH diagrams to have been segregated and transported with U6+ soluble species and precipitated when a chemically reducing environment was reached. The rare earth elements are also enriched in ore zones, but it is not clear if they were transported with the U-V-Se-Mo-(As)-(Sb) suite or derived from a more local source.

"Every year the tunneling business is expanding and collaboration with the International Society of City and Regional Planners (ISOCARP) for the future design of cities and urban communities is in the making. During the last half of this century, billions of people migrated to cities, and it is estimated that by 2030 almost five billion people worldwide will reside in urban communities. Hence, “Underground development will be an important tool in reshaping our urban areas to meet the challenges of the future without destroying their heritage or worsening their surface environment” (Esaki, 2005). In 2013, the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) estimated life expectancy to be around 80 years, meaning that in less than a decade we will need to bury billions of people in cities and urban communities, while trying to retain the deceased’s beliefs and customs. Religion plays a major role in our lives, and many people worldwide still decline to cremate their body after their death; therefore, cemeteries are essential for city inhabitants. Rites and traditions usually call for burials to be near the place of residence, which allows the remaining family members and friends to visit the grave frequently, at least in the first years. This is a challenge that urban designers and architects must confront while trying to solve the problems of future urbanization. In recent years, population growth, the rising cost of land and the extensive preservation of green areas have made cemeteries a burden and a nuisance, particularly for large cities and communities. Many graveyards that were once on the city's outskirts have become lifeless islands in populated areas (Fig. 1), rarely visited by the second and later generations. Cities worldwide face the challenge of allocating less land to maintain current burial practices. In response, some cities have begun to bury their dead at a great distance from the community; others have started to stacked burials, one on top of the other, while still others are constructing buildings and even skyscrapers for the practice of burial (Fig. 2)."

A laboratory investigation was carried out to study the influence of asphalt, bentonite and corn starch binders on the pelletization kinetics of coal fines and on the quality of the resulting pellets. Pellet quality was evaluated in terns of the compression strength, impact resistance (drop test), abrasion resistance and resistance to severe weather conditions. The amount of binder addition did not significantly influence the pellet growth kinetics. However, the pellet quality varied markedly depending upon the type and the amount of binder used. Experimental results are explained on the basis of the mechanism of interaction between the coal particles and the binders. Of the three binders tested, corn starch proved to be the best in all respects but for the resistance to water penetration. Finally, a combination of corn starch (imparting strength) and asphalt emulsion (imparting resistance to water penetration) was found to yield the best quality coal pellets.

In this paper, an innovative concept in longwall tailgate support is discussed. This new concept utilizes a new high capacity roof truss system in lieu of conventional wooden crib block. The first field test was conducted at Bailey Mine and was very successful. Similar tests have been installed in other mines and seams. An extensive instrumentation plan was designed and implemented in the truss test area. The test data has shown that the dynamic roof truss system effectively controls the various abutment pressures caused by longwall mining thus maintaining a stable tailgate entry.
