The inadequacy of our knowledge of the coal combustion process has long been recognized. This was expressed very well by Spicer and Finney (1). "The control of combustion processes in industry and the design of the equipment necessary for efficient burning to take place have always been very much branches of an industrial art rather than of an exact science. This has been especially true of the utilization of coal, a substance so hetrogeneous and complex in character that all too little is known about its chemical and physical composition.' During the past several years one branch of coal utilization, that of high temperature carbonization; has made significant advances from being an art into being an exact science. This has been accomplished by the development of petrographic techniques for identifying, measuring, and determining the thermal properties of the organic materials which affect the carbonization of coal and the correlation of this information with a pre-existing standard of coke quality, the stability index.

"This work focuses on the extraction of rare earth metals (REE) from aqueous solutions using stimuli-responsive polymers. Various parameters affecting the adsorption capacity of the polymer, including pH, polymer concentration and REE concentration were studied. The interfacial behavior of REE in aqueous phase before and after polymer addition and the mechanism of the formation of metal-polymer complexes and their properties were investigated using UV/VIS spectroscopy. Results obtained would help to test the feasibility of employing stimuli responsive polymers in pre-concentration of rare earth elements associated with other elements in mineral aqueous streams prior to solvent extraction. The pre-concentration step would reduce the amount of organic solvents used for extraction and striping compared to conventional extraction processes. INTRODUCTION Rare earth elements (REEs) have become the foundation for several technologies and have been used extensively in many industries such as modern electronics, green energy, health care and transportation and defense [1-4]. As these industry sectors are growing, the global consumption of REEs is going to increase dramatically. The current global REEs demand is estimated to be 105,000 tons of rare earth oxides per annum with an expected annual growth of 5.6% [5-6]. Rare earth elements are produced from different sources (primary and secondary). China is considered as the largest producer of REE in the world, providing about 90% of the world’s mine production while the United States is second with 4% of the mine production [7]. High global demand for rare earth materials results in shortage of such materials in the near future. It should be considered that the term ‘‘rare’’ earth is not an accurate term, since they are abundant in some extent in the Earth’s crust, but are typically finely dispersed. Thus, nowadays looking for more efficient and cheaper methods for extraction, separation and purification of low concentrated REE ores and exploring secondary sources are essential. Rare earth materials are found in raw condition and require treatment that involves several processes, which can consume money and time. Recent improvements in extraction and recycling technology have made the extraction of rare earth elements from rare earth sources more feasible in terms of cost and time [8-10]. Physical and pyrometallurgical methods require high-energy and thus high costs. Moreover, due to environmental problems, environmental protection systems are required, and they are not as adaptable as chemical processes [11, 12]."

Modern mine ventilation systems have grown rapidly in recent years both in tern of its complexities as well as its value for human health and safety. Although computer models are now available to help the design and operation of mine ventilation systems, considerable differences often exist between the computer based predictions and practical results. Research conducted to compare computer result with practical measurements made in ventilation circuits simulated in a physical model seems to confirm such differences. It is concluded that although a mine ventilation computer model is a very powerful tool, it can be utilized to its full potential only after more reliable input data are developed.

In the early operations of the Inspiration Consolidated Copper Company, which extended from 1914 to 1926, the ore as mined contained principally sulphide copper minerals, manly chalcocite (Cu2S), This ore was milled in a 20,000-ton concentrator and the copper was recovered as a flotation concentrate which, was smelted at the nearby plant of the I ternational Smelting and Refining Company. In those days no attempt was made torecovercopper from any oxide minerals present. As mining operations progressed it soon became evident that the proportion of oxide minerals present would steadily increase, and. it was realized that some method of treatment would have to be developed whereby copper could' be recovered from both oxide and. sulphide minerals contained in the ore. A research program was instituted and after some years of experimental and, pilot plant work a new hydro-metallurgical process was developed whereby it became possible to extract copper from both the oxide and. sulphide minerals in a single leaching operation. The solvent adopted consisted of a mixture of sulphuric acid and ferric sulphate,' Following dissolution, the dissolved copper would be recovered by electrolysis. Also in the process of electrolyzing, spent solutions of sulphuric acid, H2SO4, and. ferric sulphate, Fe2(SOk)3, would be regeneratede and. somade available for continuous reuse. The process appeared to be a success and the decision was made to build a full-sized leaching plant for the future treatment of I spiration mixed ore. Construction was started and the leaching plant was completed in 1926, With the start of ferric-sulphate leaching the Inspiration Concentrator was shut down and, with the exception of a few short time runs has not operated since that time. The ferric sulphate leaching process served. Inspiration well for some 30 years and during that time won a name for itself as a classic example of hydro-metallurgical treatment of mixed sulphide oxide ores. Originally the plant was designed. to process some 7,500 tons per day of a mixed ore containing about 1,2% copper, of which 60% was present as oxide and. 40% as sulphide, Down through the years various improvements were made for the purpose of increasing plant capacity and as well to change the limiting 'factor of sulphide-oxide ratio, The final result was a leaching capacity of 9,600 tons per day when treating a 1% copper ore with a reversal of the sulphide-oxide ratio to 60% sulphide and 40% oxide.

Projections of coal reserves in Central Appalachia are essential for long-term planning in the region. Annual production is declining in some states, such as Virginia, and mineable reserves for the Central Appalachian Coalfield are challenged by difficult geological, mining, and market conditions. In order to project coal mining longevity in this region, interviews with mining companies were conducted to assist in the determination and assessment of technical and economic factors that impact coal seam mineability. This information was applied to seam and coal reserve data developed by state and federal governments. The results were carefully analyzed to determine the effects of various factors on the overall mineable coal reserve base.

Most wet mines face unquantified water costs as well as the obvious wing costs. Both kinds of cost are multiplied by work at greater depth and by higher unit prices. This intensified challenge merits renewed or perhaps altogether new response. Any practicable way to reduce inflow tackles both obvious and unquantified costs. Ten groups of possible ways to do it are cited. Most have been demonstrated. Two are known from work other than mining. Surely new means can be found. Here are opportunities for operators of wet mines!

Unfortunately, the term "control" has a negative connotation in the minds of many of our operating plant personnel. Whereas the opposite is true of those associated with research and technical centers in our industry. The magnitude of this difference in opinion and actual experience has often proved to be a major factor influencing the success or failure of process control applications. Through the years, many plant people have endured a number of unsuccessful attempts by "outside" people to "optimize" their plants; and these experiences have proved to have had quite a callousing effect on them. On the other hand, in many plants, successful process control efforts have made firm allies of the operating personnel, and have increased the number of metallurgical people who are well qualified and experienced in process control. The instrumentation industry, computer industry, and the mining industry's ability to quantify what is really happening in our processes have grown and developed rapidly since the first control efforts were made in the 1930's (1). Because of this-,: new control opportunities are becoming increasingly more feasible and older well established ones are becoming even more practical and necessary with regard to the economic s of our industry.

The Pinto Valley Concentrator of BHP Copper Inc. restarted its sulphide mining operations in September 2007 to produce copper and moly concentrates. During the plant production ramp up, the copper/moly circuit quickly reached the copper grade and recovery targets, but the production and quality of the moly concentrate continued to be a challenge. Even though several improvements in the moly circuit were completed, the final moly concentrate did not meet contractual specifications. After reviewing several options to improve grade and reduce contaminants, the installation of three flotation columns was chosen. The column design and construction were done utilizing in-house craftsmen and engineers. Ten days after commissioning, the columns successfully reached a steady operation and began producing moly concentrate to the required specifications, that is, high moly tenors and low copper and iron content. In this paper, the operating parameters, mass balance, design, installation, commissioning and operation of the new flotation columns will be discussed.

The purpose of this study is to investigate the index-mechanical properties of igneous rocks by using the electrical resistivity method. Electrical resistivity, index (P-wave velocity, dry density, and porosity), and uniaxial compressive strength values of 48 different igneous rock samples were measured in the laboratory. Simple regression analysis was performed between index-mechanical properties and electrical resistivity values. Strong exponential and logarithmic correlations were found between electrical resistivity and the index-mechanical properties of the igneous rock samples.

The MANpower SUPport Program (MANSUPP), a part of the Mine Management Support System (MMSS), allows an underground coal mine site user to determine manpower requirements for production support work by considering ongoing operations and current mine conditions. The objective of MANSUPP is to plan a detailed manpower structure for a mine by incorporating a production schedule, condition-modified work standards and management preferences to predict required manhours for various activities, for example, belt moves. The program is written in Quattro Pro version 3.0 (Lotus 1-2-3 compatible) utilizing the command language, macro and formula capabilities.

The metallurgical processes that are frequently applied today use strong solutions and are of alkaline, acidic, or organic nature. These play a very important part in recovery of values from many ores. These solutions are of such a chemical nature that they are generally corrosive, flammable, and contaminating. In most cases, they are highly dangerous to the environment. Within the extractive metallurgical industry, it is also very common to have to deal with the handling of contaminating solutions with a high content of cyanide, arsenic, mercury, lead, copper kerosene, acid and many other components whose temporary or permanent confinement within the process must be adequate and absolute.

Introduction Mechanical classifiers consist of a settling tank with parallel sides and a sloping bottom equipped with a mechanism which continuously agitates the pulp and removes the settled solids. The functions served by mechanical classifiers include the following: (1) allow the particles larger than the desired size to settle in the tank and provide an overflow product with a minimum of oversize particles, (2) produce an overflow product of sufficiently high solids content to meet the requirements of the subsequent processing steps, (3) agitate the pulp and permit separation of the entrapped undersize particles so they can report in the overflow product, and (4) drain and remove the underflow solids from the settling pool. Various types of mechanisms have been used to agitate the pulp and remove the settled solids, which include: (I) endless belt and chain drags, (2) reciprocating rakes, (3) helical flights mounted on a rotating shaft which extends through the settling pool, (4) helical flights inside of a rotating drum which contains the classifier pool, (5) troughed conveyor belts forming the settling pool in the concave curve of the belt closely following the tail pulley, and (6) low-speed impellers agitating the underflow settled in the apex of cone-type mechanical classifiers.23 The principal use of mechanical classifiers has been in closed¬-circuit wet grinding; however, this application has been widely displaced over the past few decades by the hydrocyclone. The hydrocyclone installation, including its feed pump, offers lower capital costs and requires less floor space. Nominally it produces an overflow prod¬uct of higher solids content, compared with a mechanical classifier, for comparable classification size up to 400µm (35 mesh). However, these advantages of the hydrocyclone are being gained at the sacrifice of some of the advantages of the mechanical classifier. The mechanical classifier requires less power and has lower maintenance costs than the hydrocyclone and its feed pump. The underflow product from the mechanical classifier can have a higher solids content and contain less entrapped undersize particles than the comparable product from the hydrocyclone. Consequently, it is capable of operating at a higher classification efficiency. A reduced circulating load24, 25 results under these conditions in a closed-circuit grinding application. Other applications for mechanical classifiers include desliming, dewatering, and washing operations. Sand-slime separation may be achieved using one or more stages of mechanical classifiers. Typical applications would include washing and deslimining of concrete aggre¬gate or sand; glass sand; abrasives; oyster shells; phosphate rock; iron, nickel, and chromium ores; alumina; zeolites; solar salt; and precipitates from chemical processing. As an example for the latter, Bitzer26 recommended the use of mechanical classifiers for countercur¬rent cementation-in-pulp of copper from the leach liquor. Similarly, mechanical classifiers are used in uranium processing27 for separation of the barren sands from the pregnant leach solution. Depending on the particle size and the effectiveness of the sand¬slime separation, the sand product from mechanical classifiers may be drained to solids content approaching 84%. Thus, mechanical classifiers are frequently used as dewatering equipment for various applications, such as: 1) Make a product having suitable solids content for subsequent transport by belt conveyor. 2) Provide a drained product to reduce cost of drying. 3) Provide a drained, washed, heavy sand product for return to the circuit. 4) Recover fine values from dilute plant effluents from coal, sand, phosphate-rock, and iron-ore washing plants and from steel-mill flue¬dust scrubbers. 5) Drain residual reagents of a preceding process stage prior to conditioning with reagents of different characteristics, e.g., cationic¬anionic flotation of phosphate rock, iron ore, etc. Design and Operating Features The proper selection of mechanical classification equipment re¬quires that the properties of the solids and liquid are adequately de¬fined. The following descriptive information regarding the solids is desired: feed rate, chemical and physical composition, density, tem¬perature, size analysis, and desired separation size. For the liquid used, the following data would be needed: feed rate, density, viscosity, pH, and temperature. Settling Area. The pool area required to permit a particle larger than the separation size to settle depends on the density and shape of the particle and on the density and viscosity of the pulp within the classifier pool. These criteria of the solids and pulp determine the settling rate which, in turn, determines the settling area required. Determination of the settling rate by long-tube batch tests can be used to calculate the settling area. A theoretical approach for estimat¬ing the settling area requirements is discussed in Chapter 1, Classifica¬tion Theory. This procedure can be used when neither test data nor empirical data from similar operations are available. Data on settling-area requirements and settling rates have been compiled by the manufacturers of mechanical classifiers. The approxi¬mate settling area required for a particular separation size can be estimated by using the curve shown in Fig. 65. This curve applies for closed-circuit grinding applications. For dilute velocity classification in open circuit, desliming, the length of the overflow weir, W, multiplied by the weir's mean distance from the feed opening, E, is used as the design criterion, instead of the settling area, in sizing the classifier. The area requirements, W X E, for dilute velocity classification can be expressed in terms of volumetric flow, Q, and settling rate, Rs, as follows: W x E = Q/(18.06 Rs) where W and E are feet, Q is gallons per minute, and Rs is inches per second. Overflow Weir. The hydraulic head, and thus the velocity at which the overflow crests the overflow weir, is one of the factors controlling the particle size of classification. Consequently, the length of the overflow weir must be designed to provide the overflow velocity which allows the particles larger than the desired size of classification to settle in the working area of the pool. Rare earth elements are essential for modern life products and green technologies. Recent supply constraints have boosted the development of rare earth projects after the price peak of 2011. The feasibility of a project depends on the definition of a processing route, which in turn depends primarily on the rare earth mineral, with monazite and bastnaesite representing the two most relevant minerals. Monazite-type ores usually contain high acid consumption impurities, such as iron, aluminum, calcium, magnesium, and phosphates, and may also contain prohibitive levels of radioactive thorium in its composition. This work presents a thermodynamic analysis of a monazite system and discusses the fundamentals of a selective process route for rare earth extraction from monazite ores with high iron content. This process involves sulfation by means of concentrated sulfuric acid and roasting at a high temperature. The route yields high rare earth extraction with low iron and thorium extractions and low acid consumption. Rare earth extractions as high as 80% were achieved, while iron and thorium extractions were lower than 1%, and acid consumption was lower than 0.34 kg of sulfuric acid per kg of ore. The operational window was compared to the one predicted by thermodynamic modeling, with 700 °C representing the optimal roasting temperature

Mississippi Valley Type Pb-Zn deposits are widespread in the midcontinent U.S. and have been mined from the 1800's to present. Some tens of thousands of acres of mined land in the Tri-State District have been designated as Superfund sites as a result of surficial mine wastes and ground waters with elevated levels of metals. EPA considers the surficial mine wastes to be hazardous and a major source of acid mine drainage fAMD) that degrades water resources and threatens human health and the environment. To mitigate potential risks at one site near Galena, Kansas, a group of mining companies who had been identified by EPA as Potentially Responsible Parties IPRPs) proposed subgrade disposal of the mining wastes in shafts and subsidence features. However, this proposal was challenged by the Agency on grounds related to AMD and the potential for degradation of ground water quality. The PRP team developed a program of materials characterization, laboratory-scale leaching, and finally large-scale, pilot testing in the field. Static and dynamic leaching tests at both laboratory scale fusing artificial rainwater under both variably and fully saturated conditions) and field scale (using pH 4.5 ground water) showed that the surficial wastes do not produce acidic leachate and are not a long-term source of metals. Laboratory chemical and mineralogical tests show that the mine wastes contain substantial carbonate, but very limited iron sulfides, consistent with the leach test results. EPA "characterization" tests fEP Toxicity and TCLP) compare very poorly with tests simulating the expected leaching conditions. While these tests would classify the surficia1 wastes as "hazardous, they do not characterize the behavior of the high-volume, low-concentration, coarse-grained materials with respect to environments and disposal options of interest. To be meaningful, characterization of mining wastes must be performed in a manner that simulates the environmental conditions that are actually of interest with respect to a specific decision, such as subgrade disposal in the saturated zone.

The primary and secondary organic matter in sedimentary rocks changes markedly when it becomes heated as a consequence of thick sediment accumulation and normal geothermal gradients, high geothermal gradients, hydrothermal fluids, or igneous events. Contact zones adjacent to small igneous dikes allow sampling of a single sedimentary bed that has been exposed to temperatures in a range as great as 30-500°C. Dike-heated rocks are, therefore, good sites for research on thermal effects because variation of the original organic matter is minimal, the range of heating is great, and the history of rock heating in a dike zone is relatively well established. In rare cases, such as at the dike near Wolcott, Colorado, described in this paper, the rock samples are sufficiently unweathered to allow analysis of secondary bitumens generated by the heating. We show by optical microscopy, scanning and transmission electron microscopy, and geochemistry the kinds of solid organic constituents in sedimen¬tary rocks and in ore deposits and the effects of heating. The primary phytoclasts that make up kerogen In sedimentary rock and in some ore deposits (pollen, resin, charcoal, humified woody remains, etc.) change in ways that are familiar to coal specialists. Progressive loss of moisture and other volatile matter yields residual kerogen that Is relatively higher in carbon and lower In oxygen and hydrogen, and has greater molecular or polymer ordering. In our contact zone examples, atomic H/C ratios of kerogen decrease from 0.8 (one case from 1.4) to 0.4, the hydrogen index from Rock-Eval pyrolysis decreases from 70 to 5, and the transformation ratio from Rock-Eval pyrolysis increases from 0.06 to 0.5 with increased heating. The visible effects of heating seen by scanning electron microscopy and light microscopy include formation of vesicles and flow structure, the development of optical anisotropy and mesophase, change of color, and increase in the refractive index, absorption, and reflectance. Some of these changes In primary organic matter are observed also in secondary organic matter, for example, in solid bitumens in sedimentary gold ores or In lead-zinc deposits. Quantification of color or absorption changes is difficult because it Is hard to make thin sections of organic matter with uniform thickness. However, natural objects with uniform thickness can be used. We show the colors of pollen In rocks from the Salton geothermal field at temperatures ranging from 100 to 300°C, and of pollen heated in laboratory bombs from 150 to 400°C. Measurement of vitrinite reflectance is a practical way to quantify thermal changes of kerogen and minerals of most sedimentary rocks because vitrinite is fairly widespread In sedimentary rocks of Devonian age and younger. For example, the reflectance of vitrinite rises from the regional level, as low as 0.4 % Ro, to more than 5% Ro adjacent to dikes that cut sedimentary rock. This is equivalent to the rank change from subbituminous coal to extreme meta-anthracite. The rise is most abrupt near thin dikes, but when the distance from the igneous contact is expressed as a ratio of dike thickness the reflectance rise is similar for all dikes. Controlled heating of vitrinite-bearing rocks In the laboratory provides a means to assign known temperatures to vitrinite-reflectance values. The derived plots of temperature In dike contact zones have the same shape and level as those predicted by heat theory, and the temperature lines extend toward dike contact temperatures that are about half those of most magmas, as expected if the intrusions did not flow past the sedimentary rock for a long time. The globular submicroscopic structure of vitrinite and Its heterogeneity, which we show by means of transmission electron microscopy, pose some problems In selecting a uniform type of vitrinite for measurement of thermal changes. At present, routine reflectance values of vitrinite dispersed in rocks have a relative uncertainty as great as 10%. Thermally caused chemical changes in the primary kerogen, especially decrease in the oxygen and hydrogen contents, lead to formation of secondary products in the contact zone. The measured changes of secondary organic products in these rocks include formation of peaks In concentration of total extractable organic matter and in hydrocarbons, and in the saturated/aromatic hydrocarbon ratio over the interval where primary organic hydrogen decreases most rapidly--then destruction or expulsion of these products at high temperatures. The odd carbon-number predominance of the C25-C31 n-alkanes In samples far from the dike disappears by about 1.3% Ro whereas the 13C: 12C ratios of the saturated and aromatic hydrocarbons increase over most of the thermal range. The saturated aromatic hydrocarbon ratio at first increases, corresponding to thermal generation of saturated hydrocarbons, then decreases in the most altered samples. One use of organic petrography, in addition to identifying organic fades or thermal alteration, is recognition of sample contamination such as the solid organic additives used in some drilling muds which may contaminate geochemical samples.

In contrast to the rather generalized title of this paper, the subject of discussion will deal with two specific cases of sliding in glacial lake clays in northern Michigan. The slides in question occurred on lands owned by the Upper Peninsula Power Company a short distance south of Lake Superior. Slope failure problems have plagued the Company's operations for many years. It is hoped that this paper may provide some insight into the causes and possible mechanisms of clay slides in general as well as providing details of the two slides specifically cited. LOCATION The Upper Peninsula Power Company's Victoria facilities lie in section 29, T. 50 N., R. 39 W., in Ontonagon County, Michigan. The power site is situated on the West Branch of the Ontonagon River, approximately five miles southwest of the town of Rockland and only one mile to the southeast of the old mining location of Victoria. The area lies wholly within the Precambrian Shield and it is geologically similar to adjacent parts of Wisconsin, Minn¬esota, and Ontario. (Figure 1). THE VICTORIA HYDROELECTRIC SITE The Victoria hydroelectric power facilities were constructed in 1930 on a portion of the West Branch where meanders are conspicuously developed. The generating station is actually sited on an abandoned meander at a place where valley widening has occurred. The underground operation at Barrick?s Cortez Mine, located near Elko, NV, required the construction of a 12 foot diameter smooth-lined ventilation shaft. Barrick preferred to mechanically excavate from the ground surface without putting people in the excavation and considered blind drilling by Frontier-Kemper Constructors the best option. Design and construction challenges arose throughout both the excavation and lining stages. A large portion of the rock to be drilled was highly fractured. Important risks that were addressed included water loss into the formation, zones of squeezing ground, damage to drilling tools caused by blocky ground and fallout, and potential hazards during cast-in-place concrete lining. Detailed explanations of these challenges and the methods used to overcome them will be described.

The loading characteristics of gold-tetrabromide species onto activated carbon have been evaluated using a completely mixed batch reactor system. The overall loading of gold onto carbon was rapid for the first hour but continued slowly without cessation as a result of reduction of gold. Conventional equilibrium considerations were therefore not applicable. Although loading continued slowly after several days, abnormally high loading capacity values of 10-12 meq/g carbon (650-800 kgAu/tonne) could be attained within 72 hours. The loading of gold-bromo species by activated carbon was by the mass transfer of [AuBr4l-onto the carbon surface where reduction to metallic gold took place. Elution of gold from the loaded carbon was feasible provided the carbon had not been loaded to too high capacity values. If loading is carried to high levels, complete elution becomes impractical and the gold may be recovered by ashing the carbon. For the high loading capacities observed, this option would appear to be cost effective. The effect of several variables on the loading capacity of the activated carbon is discussed.

The by-product molybdenite technology in Chile is reviewed. Flowsheets, reagents and some operation features for the actual six Chilean moly plants(Chuquicamata, El Teniente, El Salvador, Andina, Las Tortolas and Pelambres), are presented. The chemical and physicochemical factors involved in the depression of copper and iron sulfides during the selective flotation of molybdenite, with sodium sulfide, sodium sulfhydrate, anamol-D and LR-744, are discussed. Urban quarries offer one of the greatest opportunities for profit in non-metallic mining with limited financial risk IF properly evaluated, planned and developed to meet market needs. Location, with respect to market, is the prime consideration. Geologic considerations and quality of rock are nearly as important. Cost factors and return on investment (ROI) are the principal financial considerations. Risk of capital is determined by weighing all factors that should be considered and how well judgements are based on information acquired. It is a simple, true axiom of business that an investment must be founded on amount of capital required with its expected return plus profit, expertise required to operate and time involved. Urban quarries generally offer excellent stone product market opportunities. Costs of land with mineral containment and processing operations are much greater than in rural areas. Environmental problems have become increasingly severe. Competition from other quarries in the market area is usually directly proportional to the profit attractiveness. Risk of capital (initial, developmental and operational) can be evaluated and reduced only by thorough analysis of the entire situation. Time and money expended on planning and preliminary investigations probably represent the most productive investment of available company resources.
