The El Soldado copper deposit occurs in volcanic rocks of alkaline affinity of Lower Cretaceous age. The orebodies are discordant and show strong structural and lithological control. The mineralizing event was accompanied by hydro- thermal alteration expressed as carbonatization, silicification, and chloritization. Individual orebodies contain bornite-chalcopyrite cores which are surrounded by haloes dominated by chalcopyrite and pyrite respectively. The sulfur isotope composition of copper sulfides strongly suggests the sulfur is of magmatic origin. Fluid inclusion studies show the mineralizing fluid to be a highly saline NaC1-CaC12, brine. No evidence of boiling was found. The deposit is most likely of epigenetic origin. Hydrothermal fluids were produced during crystallization of a sodium rich trachytic magma during the waning stages of an episode of alkaline magmatic activity. Similar copper deposits along the Chilean Coastal Range may also be associated with alkaline host rocks.

The Expanded West Pit of the 15 MTY El Cerrejon Mine will reach a maximum depth of270 m. Slope stability evaluations indicated that this depth, combined with structural complexities, would create a serious risk of footwall instability. Stabilization call for anchoring the footwall by installation of cable bolts, 9 to 33 m long, of multi-strand steel cable. For each of the 15 m high mining benches, a row of bolts is installed with variable horizontal spacing, depending on dip magnitude. Cable bolting is now standard operating practice and 11800 bolts will have been installed during the life of the mine.

Coal has traditionally been an integral part of life in Kentucky. Coal mining produces a large part of revenue for the Commonwealth of Kentucky and provides a significant number of jobs to the residents of eastern (less in western) Kentucky. Recently, however, the coal industry of Kentucky has had to endure many hardships. The Clean Air Act set forth sulfur dioxide emission standards which have severely affected much of the coal mining industry in Kentucky, because much of the coal mined in Kentucky has a high sulfur content. In this paper, the background around the effects of Clean Air Act on the coal industry is introduced. The economic and social effects of the Clean Air Act on the Kentucky coal mining are addressed.

"In 2008, the world quietly hit a milestone that did not receive much fanfare or publicity, but it hit one that marked a turning point in the history of mankind and the way the planet is and will be inhabited in the future. It was in 2008 that, for the first time, more than half of the world’s population, an estimated 3.3 billion people, resided in urban areas. The world’s population had moved from being a majority of agricultural and rural society to an urban society. Andrew Whalley, deputy chairman for Grimshaw Architects, said this change in where and how people live will continue to increase urban populations and, by 2050, it is estimated that more than 6.4 billion people will live in urban areas. To meet these needs, Whalley, speaking during the keynote session of the 2105 Cutting Edge conference in Denver, CO, said future cities will have to be reimagined and redesigned to be more efficient. A large part of that design will be in the infrastructure of those cities.At the Fourth Annual Cutting Edge Conference, Sept. 21-23, much of the discussion was around how the tunneling and underground construction industries improve cities in a number of ways, including societal, environmental and in overall efficiency. There was talk, not just about the improvements that society enjoys at the completion of such projects, but also about the challenges faced by the owner and contractor in the construction of such projects.The conference, titled Urban Tunneling, brought together some of the top minds in the industry to not only discuss the issues faced today, but also those that will shape the industry in the future.For his part, Whalley spoke about a number of projects around the world and how they have impacted society in ways beyond simply providing a better means for transportation of people or water. Notably, he spoke about the Crossrails project in London.London is a city of 8.6 million people and a history that dates back nearly 2,000 years. It is a great example of the challenges the industry faces in bringing modern efficiencies to an established city.Running more than 100 km (62 miles) with more than 42 km (26 miles) of tunnels passing through 40 stations, including 10 new stations, the project is the largest in Europe and will transform the way people move about the city."

This work is a first-order study to assess the suitability of an organic acid lixiviant to extract rare earth elements (REE) from coal preparation fines refuse sourced from a Pennsylvania mine with a total REE of ~ 300 ppm. The extraction of REE using an organic acid, in this case 0.1Mcitric acid and 0.5Mtrisodium citrate solution, is compared against 0.5M(NH4)2SO4, 1MHCl, 1.2MH2SO4, and 0.5Methylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA). Ashing the coal waste material prior to leaching tests with the citrate solution nominally improved REE extraction. Buffered citrate solution recovered 7% of the total REE in the as-received Isabella Fines as compared to 11% in ashed samples, whereas (NH4)2SO4 extracted 5–6%, respectively. EDTA recovered up to 33%of the total REE, most likely due to the higher coordination chelate bond. Mineral acids, however, outperformed the organic acids on ashed material (16–52%REE recovery), suggesting that organic acids may not be a suitable competitive option for REE extraction from these types of feedstocks.

This paper presents sulfur isotope data obtained for the deposits and country rocks of the Bailadores and Aroa Mining District, Venezuela. The study is a part of an extensive geochemical investigation of the mineralized belts that has as their aim the elucidation of the genesis of ores. The Bailadores deposits are located at about 600 Km. west-southwest of Caracas, or about 10 Km. southeast of the Town of Bailadores, Merida State (Fig. 1). The mine concession is held by the Ministry of Mines and Hydrocarbons (De Lima I, De Lima II and La Cascade areas). In a straight distance the mine is about 90 Km. southwest of Merida, the capital of Mérida State. From Mérida to Bailadores, through La Victoria and Tovar, it takes 3 hour by car. From Bailadores to the mine site it is about 40 minutes by jeep. The Aroa deposits are located at 4 Km. east of Aroa Village, Yaracuy State, about 220 Km. west of Caracas. It is 83 Km. from San Felipe, the capital of Yaracuy State to the mine (Fig.2). The mine is about 600 m above sea level, situated on the northern foot of the E-W trending Andes. The topography of the mine are shows a mature stage and is somewhat rugged. As the climate is warm and humid, the area is thicky covered with jungle.

This paper summarizes the Bureau of Reclamation's experience in the use of boring machines to excavate six major tunnels on the Bureau's water resources development projects in the western United States. The summary of experience is presented as a compilation of brief case studies for each of the six tunnels. Each compilation presents data on the tunnel dimensions, geological characteristics of the excavated rock, the tunneling machine used, machine operation, muck handling, method of tunnel support, ventilation system, and related information. The listing of the six tunnels in Table 1 reflects a diversity of tunnel lengths and diameters. However, despite this diversity of dimensions as well as the variety of rock encountered during excavation, the six tunnels have one major characteristic in common: their excavation was significantly expedited by the use of boring machines. Beginning with the 10,079-foot-long Tunnel No. 1 on the Navajo Indian Irrigation Project in New Mexico - the Bureau's first tunnel to be excavated by a boring machine - the boring machines, or "moles," have demonstrated their effectiveness in rapid and economical tunnel excavation. Tunnel No. 1, virtually 2 miles long, was bored through in 9 months, an unprecedented achievement in Bureau engineering experience, as compared with tunnels previously excavated by conventional means. "There is certainly no argument that LED lighting systems have taken a strong foothold in the lighting marketplace over the last several years. This has even proven true in the world of transportation and transit lighting, for which new LED cobra head style luminaires are replacing traditional HID cobra head luminaires on North America’s roadwaysand linear LED light fixtures are replacing conventional linear fluorescent light fixtures in North American rail transit facilities. However, LED technology has taken a while longer to penetrate the very specific market of vehicular tunnel lighting in this continent. Though both the New York/New Jersey Holland and Lincoln Tunnels have recently been retrofitted with LED lighting, and an LED Lighting RFP is currently out for Boston’s Central Artery Tunnels, very few vehicular tunnels in North America to date have been illuminated with LED light fixtures. This is largely because cost effective LED lighting, that met our typically stringent tunnel lighting standards, was until recently simply unattainable. However, with the rapid advances in LED technology over recent years, owners and specifiers of North American tunnel lighting projects have finally begun to adopt LED lighting systems as the norm. In fact, a recent Lux Fit/Yole Development “LED in Road and Street Lighting Report” stated that “LED luminaire growth will be driven firstly by tunnel lighting, and then relayed into highway, road, residential and amenity lighting applications starting in 2014.” 1 Our highways are continually becoming more congested. As a result, Provincial and State Departments of Transportation (DOTs) are constantly looking for innovative ways to improve traffic flow. One way DOTs are now helping to ease congestion is by expanding the use of tunnels and long underpasses in large interchange reconstruction projects. With less available right-of-way to work with, and the high costs of maintaining elevated bridge structures over the years, it often makes more sense to “go under” (rather than over) the traffic congestion points. With the addition of these new tunnels and long underpasses comes the issue of proper illumination within these structures, for a safe and efficient driving task. DOTs use recommended lighting practices and guidelines for highway lighting, which include specific criteria for tunnels, set by either the Illuminating Engineering Society of North America (IESNA) or the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO). However, both IESNA and AASHTO point out that these recommended practices and guidelines are not a mandate, and DOTs are free to make their own decisions about lighting criteria. Accordingly, effectively illuminating tunnels is often times a challenge. This paper will examine the key considerations of the tunnel lighting application in generalas well as what LEDs now bring to the table and how, accordingly, traditional lighting technologies will be phased out in the future illumination of tunnels."

The Grand Isle Sulphur Mine is located in the Gulf of Mexico, approximately seven miles off the coast of Grand Isle, Jefferson Parish, Louisiana. The depth of water at this location is about 50 feet. The deposit is on acreage covered by oil, gas, and mineral leases which were originally issued in favor of Humble Oil & Refining Company by the State of Louisiana, and which were continued, maintained, and redesignated by the Department of the Interior of the United States, pursuant to Section 6(b) of the Outer Continental Shelf Lands Act. On September 19, 1956, Freeport Sulphur Company acquired from Humble Oil & Refining Company the sulphur rights underlying the tracts. This assignment was approved by the Secretary of the Interior on July 12, 1957. The Director, United States Geological Survey, approved Freeport Sulphur Company as Operator on July 31, 1957. Actual design began in September 1956; the first structural contract was let December 15, 1957, and offshore erection began in June 1958. The initial phase of construction will be completed and production started in early 1960. The estimated total cost of the project is $30,- 000,000, of which $8,000,000 is the extra cost for being in the Gulf of Mexico.

Virtually all structures show some signs of distress due to deterioration of the building components, to changed loads, or to changed support conditions. Changed support conditions result from ground movements. In mining regions many cases of structural distress are attributed to mining without considering alternative causes. This is particularly true of coal mining since it occurs under extensive areas. Coal mining is estimated to have already undermined more than eight million acres and may eventually undermine 40 million acres in the United States (HRB Singer, Inc., 1977). Other nonmetal and metal underground mines impact much smaller areas. Although it is sometimes difficult, even with careful study, to identify the actual cause of damage, persons responsible for underground coal mining should at least be aware of possible causes of building stress other than mine subsidence. The Los Angeles County Transportation Authority’s Purple Line Extension Phase 1 is a $3.12 billion (USD) design-build, underground heavy rail project, connecting an existing station at Wilshire Boulevard and Western Avenue and extending west 3.92 miles under Wilshire Boulevard and terminating approximately 550 feet west of Wilshire/La Cienega Station. The project alignment runs through the heart of the world famous La Brea Tar Pits and one of the world’s largest urban oil elds. This paper presents a case history of the planning, design, and construction efforts to achieve successful construction of the bored tunnels through Reach 3 of the alignment. Further, this paper outlines the proactive partnership between the owner, Los Angeles County Metro (Metro), the Design Builder, Skanska-Traylor-Shea oint enture (STS), and Southwest Geophysics who provided the geophysical services. Specically, the project included background review of historic site data (e.g., oil eld maps, building foundation plans, historic aerial photographs, etc.), geophysical demonstration testing to ascertain the capability of borehole magnetics to detect oil wells, directional drilling of thousands of feet of horizontal and vertical boreholes, collection of high resolution magnetic gradiometer data along vertically and horizontally cased boreholes as well as the collection of surface magnetometer data, discovery (“ground truthing”) of detected geophysical anomalies, and abatement of potential obstructions within the tunnel alignment.

The demand for natural gas continues to increase at higher than anticipated rates, partly because of its widening price advantage over most other fossil fuels when the cost of air pollution control is included. However, there are clear indications that natural gas supply from the contiguous 48 states and continental shelves will not indefinitely keep up with this rapid growth in demand. Projections are presented which define the extent of potential deficiencies from the 1970's to the year 2000. Among the sources of supplemental gas - imported pipeline natural gas from Canada and Mexico, tanker import of liquefied natural gas, and synthetic pipeline gas from coal and oil shale - by far the most abundant at potentially competitive costs is pipeline gas from coal. The state of development and relative economics of the various coal gasification processes are reviewed. It is shown that synthetic pipeline gas could become a very substantial market for bituminous coal and lignite at current minemouth prices - 60-70 million' tons of coal for each trillion cubic feet of synthetic pipeline gas produced. This corresponds to only slightly more than the current annual increase is gas demand.

Introduction The Brunswick No. 12 mine is located about 27 km (17 miles) southwest of Bathurst, New Brunswick. The deposit is a stratiform massive sulfide deposit occurring in a series of sedimentary and volcanic rocks of the Tetagouche Group. These rocks are generally considered to be Ordovician in age. Ore reserves at Brunswick No. 12 are 104 Mt (115 million st) grading 3.72% lead (Pb), 9.01% zinc (Zn), 0.32% copper (Cu), and 97.9 g/t (2.8 oz per st) silver (Ag). Production in 1984 was 3.5 Mt (4 million st) at 3.57% Pb, 8.91% Zn, 0.32% Cu, and 100 g/t (2.9 oz per st) Ag. Total payable silver production that year was 211 t (6.8 million oz). This made Brunswick one of the largest silver producers in Canada. Bathurst-Newcastle area and Brunswick Mining Interest in the Bathurst area was aroused in 1897 when W. Hussey discovered an iron formation at Austin Brook, just south of Brunswick No. 6 deposit. This area, and the current No. 6 area, was explored from 1897 to 1907. Iron ore was mined at Austin Brook from 1907 to 1913 and from 1942 to 1943. Any occurrence of sulfides was overlooked until 1952. In 1952, M. J. Boylen Enterprises investigated the small sulfide body associated with the Austin Brook iron formation. Other electromagnetic anomalies associated with the iron formation were investigated. The No. 6 deposit was found late in 1952, when hole B12 intersected 97.5 m (320 ft) of massive sulfides. The No. 12 deposit, 10 km (6 miles) to the north, was found in 1953. More than 30 massive sulfide deposits have since been identified in the Bathrust area. In the 1950s, St. Joe Lead Co. did extensive test work on the No. 6 and No. 12 deposits, including shafts at No. 12, lateral development at No. 12, and testing at both deposits.

There has been an ongoing debate on how to transform engineering education to better prepare students for today`s professional world that is characterized by increasingly complex problems and challenges that engineers are tasked with upon entering the industry. Within the conceive–design–implement–operate (CDIO) framework, entrepreneurship education presents a valuable pedagogical approach to foster the necessary skills of the students through integrated, hands-on, active learning experiences. While numerous publications have addressed possibilities of how experiential, problem-based, project-based and active learning can be integrated into engineering curriculum, there has been hardly any attention on mining engineering with respect to adopting this approach. This paper will address the possibilities of integrating entrepreneurship education into mining engineering programs in particular. This paper will enhance and foster discussion among academics from mining engineering on how to integrate elements of entrepreneurship education on a course, program and departmental level to infuse value creation experiences across the curriculum.

These companies are Kaiser, Reynolds, Alcoa, and Alcan, and the Agreements came into effect on February 1, 1980. One of the results of these new Agreements is the Acquisition of all company-owned bauxite lands by the Government and the rationalization of bauxite reserves.

Although the foundation of a unified treatment of fluid flow in variably saturated porous media was established more than seventy years ago, no serious attempt was made to develop it until the early 1970's. Ever since, a number of unsaturated-saturated numerical models have been reported in the literature. However, none of these models have treated multidimensional, multiphase flow in deforming media, parts of which may undergo extensive secondary fracturing. A situation such as this is not uncommon in coal mining operations in which the longwall method of extraction is employed. The present model has been structured to handle such physical systems. This paper presents the mathematical formulation, the numerical algorithm, and a further validation and evaluation of the modified model. The model treats a multiphase flow in a three- dimensional regime and handles mining excavations of complex and changing configurations.

The Sam Goosly or Equity silver deposit is fundamental- ly a discovery based on the analysis and interpretation of reconnaissance geochemical samples. The discovery was made by Kennco in an area of heavy forestation and wide- spread cover by thin glacial debris. No major mines had been discovered in the vicinity of the discovery prior to the geochemical reconnaissance, and the interpretation of the geochemical results therefore was based on data available through geologic mapping and the sample collection process. In the period 1959-1961, PE. Hirst and his crew, in 1962- 1965 P.T. Blackand his crew, and in 1966-1967 C.S. Ney and P.T. Black and their crew collected geochemical samples from the area of what is now the ore body. Several of these samples were compiled and reanalyzed in the winter of 1966- 1967 for various trace elements, including fluorine. A strong, almost 16-sq-km (10-sq-mile) fluorine anomaly was projected along with a very weak heavy metal anomaly. On the basis of this anomaly, a chalcopyrite-bearing quartz monzonite was discovered in 1967. This was a misleading, noneconomic discovery not associated with the Sam Goosly discovery. The interpretation of the geochemical data by Barakso that summer indicated that another source was responsible for the fluorine anomaly. The conclusion was based on the assemblage of trace elements. Therefore C.S. Ney recommended further regional soil sampling to check the original data. The early results of this follow-up sampling found over 33 ppm silver. First float, then ore outcrop was found in the area of the silver anomaly. The attached reprints complete the development of the property after the discovery of the outcrop of ore.

INTRODUCTION Laboratory testing for magnetic concentration circuit design is a requirement, just as it is for most other types of concentration. Natural variations in raw materials allow on1 y the broadest of generalities to be made regarding magnetic separation. Further, magnetic fields are geometry dependent, leaving fundamental models of a separator overly dependent upon the exact conditions for which the models were derived. Despite this, an understanding of the basics of magnetic separation and of the problem to be attacked can result in rapid progress towards the final circuit design with a relatively simple testing program. Magnetic Separation Basic Principles A magnetic field can readily be understood in terms of lines of flux. A familiar demonstration of these lines of flux is the pattern of iron filings on a sheet of paper when a magnet is placed underneath. Lines of flux2 are measured in Gauss (1 line/cm2) or Tesla (10000 gauss). Regions of high field strength have a greater number of lines. Field direction is indicated by a convergence of lines. When a particle is placed in a magnetic field it cuts the lines of flux and alters them in one of three basic patterns. These patterns are referred to as diamagnetic, paramagnetic and ferromagnetic. Diamagnetic materials have electronic structures which react to oppose an applied magnetic field. This opposition acts to locally reduce the applied field slightly. The visualization is that lines of flux diverge and go around the particle. Because of this divergence or opposition, a diamagnetic particle will tend to move towards regions of lower flux density. That is to say that the particle will be repelled by a magnetic field. Aluminum oxide and napthalene are examples of diamagnetic materials. Paramagnetic materials have an electronic structure which increases an applied magnetic field. Although these materials also exhibit diamagnetism, they have randomly oriented impaired electrons which align with the magnetic field. Geometallurgical characterization is increasingly used in the mining industry to model ore types, predict process performance and identify potential recovery issues ahead of time. However, most geometallurgical assessments are based on bench- or laboratory-scale analyses of relatively sparse samples, leaving most of the orebody characteristics known only by inference until the rocks are actually mined. In this pilot study, we test drone- and tripod-based hyperspectral imaging for mapping mineralogy across mine highwalls, dumps and leach pads. The results show that hyperspectral imaging can successfully map the types and distribution patterns of key minerals (especially carbonates, sulfates, clays, other phyllosilicates) and other important features (such as lixiviant ponding on leach pads), bringing geometallurgy into the field to provide crucial inputs to process decisions.
