High Pressure Grinding Roll (HPGR) technology has been evaluated to replace tertiary cone crushing at Coeur Rochester operations (Coeur Rochester, Inc.) as an opportunity to improve silver recovery. In 2016 and 2017, onsite and third-party pilot programs were initiated to evaluate the impact of metallurgical recovery and heap leach performance of crushed product generated by an HPGR. In 2018, Forte Dynamics evaluated the HPGR laboratory metallurgical data from Coeur Rochester and all third parties to develop field-scale leach curves based on new crushing scenarios. The laboratory recovery test work data was consolidated and scaled to field conditions to determine projected heap leach performance. Based on the metallurgical testing conducted, the replacement of current tertiary cone crushers with HPGR technology has the potential to increase Coeur Rochester’s silver recovery rate by 8%, from 61% to 69%, and shorten the overall timing of silver recoveries from 20 years to just over two years. INTRODUCTION The Rochester mine, and associated valley fill heap leach facilities is an open-pit silver and gold mine located in Pershing County, Nevada, approximately 26 miles northeast of the city of Lovelock. In 2017, Rochester produced approximately 4.7M troy oz silver (Ag) and 51k troy oz gold (Au). Ore mined at Rochester is either fed directly to the primary X-Pit crusher, crushed at an in-pit crusher system, or placed directly onto a heap leach pad as run-of-mine (ROM). Both crushing circuits are comprised of three stages of crushing to produce a nominal 3/8” ore. Primary crushing consists of jaw crushing while secondary and tertiary crushing are composed of varying cone crushers. Historical recovery rates of crushed Rochester ore average 61.4% Ag and 95.9% Au over a period of 20 years [1]. These rates were derived from third party verification of in-house metallurgical test results, crusher production and heap leach production results from 1986 through 2004 in a private report for Rochester produced by KD Engineering Co., Inc. Recovery rates are regularly verified by compositing daily samples of ore delivered to each leach pad from the X-pit crusher, in-pit crusher, and/or ROM. A proportionate split of each sample is used to generate monthly composites for metallurgical analysis utilizing column leaching and bottle roll leaching. These tests are run in a manner analogous with production conditions and deliver test results that provide expected heap leach performance. As the Rochester oxide deposit has been mineralogically and metallurgically consistent, the gold and silver recovery trends have also been consistent over the life of the project. In 2016 and 2017, onsite and third-party pilot programs were initiated to evaluate the impact of HPGR technology to metallurgical recovery and heap leach performance of crushed product in an open circuit configuration, as a potential replacement for the currently in place tertiary cone crushers. During these years, HPGR was evaluated in three phases of test work.

The aim of this study is to synthesize hydrated compounds of calcium silicate (tobermorite) using as siliceous source perlite milling process wastes, containing more than 70% of SiO2. Calcium silicate hydrates are mainly used for construction of lightweight building materials, plasters, tiles and filters. The effect of temperature, time and particle size of perlite on the quality and composition of the solid product was studied. The solid products were characterized by X-ray Diffractometry, Differential Thermal Analysis and the amount of Acid Insoluble Residue. The synthesis of tobermorite was per-formed by the hydrothermal treatment of perlite waste with a saturated calcium hydroxide solution at a molar ratio CaO/SiO2 of 1, liquid to solid ratio 10 mL/g and 1% w.t. NaOH addition. Three experimental sets were performed. In the first series of experiments the synthesis temperature was kept constant at 205°C while the synthesis time varied from 0.5 h to 24 h. In the second experimental series the synthesis time was kept constant at 2 h while the temperature varied between 150°C and 245°C. In the third experimental set the temperature was 205°C and the reaction time was 2 hours and two perlite waste size fractions were used, a coarse (d50=18 µm) and a fine grained one (d50=8 µm). Reaction products consisted of semicrystalline calcium silicate hydrate (I) and crystalline Al-substituted tobermorite or a mixture of both. An isomorphic Si4+ ions substitution with Al3+ ions in the hydrated calcium silicate lattice was detected by thermal analysis. The experimental results show that good quality crystalline Al-tobermorite can be produced after 6 hours of autoclaving at 205°C or after 2 hours of hydro-thermal treatment at 225°C. Generally, the in-crease of synthesis temperature or time favors the crystallization of calcium silicate phases and enriches them in aluminum. The use of fine grain size perlite is more efficient for the hydrothermal synthesis of calcium silicate hydrates.

"A commercially available through-the-earth (TTE) communications system was evaluated at an active underground longwall mine in West Virginia. This TTE system uses electricfield (E-field) sensing to send text-based communications through two separate antenna arrays connected in parallel. Each antenna array is composed of interconnected, grounded metallic rods or other such structures. Two-way communication between subsurface locations was investigated in this study using various antenna configurations. This field study was conducted as a part of a larger multisite evaluation of available TTE systems in an effort to determine their operational sensitivities. IntroductionWireless, through-the-earth (TTE) communication technology is designed to achieve point-to-point communication through solid strata using very low frequency (VLF) and ultra-low frequency (ULF) electromagnetic waves. Using this approach, communications are established without the need for intermediary communications infrastructure. As a result, TTE systems have the potential to provide reliable, robust communications between surface and underground personnel. Exploration into the use of TTE technology for this purpose dates back to the 1920s (Jakosky and Zellers, 1924; Pittman, Church and McLendon, 1985), but U.S. permissibility requirements slowed the development of TTE equipment for widespread implementation (Durkin 1980; Pittman, Church and McLendon, 1985). One of the primary challenges in producing wireless TTE communications is the counteraction of signal attenuation when propagating through solid strata (Barkand, Damiano and Shumaker, 2006; Wadley, 1949). The long wavelengths of TTE transmissions make them well-suited for reducing the rate of attenuation. However, even when operating within the VLF to ULF range, the performance of TTE systems is still affected by geologic and anthropogenic factors (Geyer, 1973; Geyer and Keller, 1976; Geyer, Keller and Ohya, 1974; Jakosky and Zellers, 1924; Large, Ball and Farstad, 1973). Although commercially developed TTE systems have demonstrated the ability to communicate in a variety of conditions, their range and performance have been highly varied (Barkand, Damiano and Shumaker, 2006; Geyer and Keller, 1976; Geyer, Keller and Ohya, 1974; Ilsley, Freeman and Zellers, 1928; Jakosky and Zellers, 1924; Yenchek et al., 2012)."

Banded ironstone and associated fine-grained carbonaceous sediments near Jardine, Montana, are enriched in gold, arsenic, and tungsten. The mineralized sediments lie within a thick sequence of quartz-mica schists cut by a 2.6 b.y, granite. Surface, underground, and drill hole mapping are used to construct structure contour maps of individual ironstone lenses. Each lens is then unfolded by triangulation of minimum surface path distances between drill hole penetration points. Major and minor element abundances in composite ironstone samples are interrelated through R-mode factor analysis. Results indicate five significant element groupings thought to reflect coarse detrital, fine detrital, sulfide-rich chemical, iron-rich chemical, and epiclastic ultramafic sediment. Ultramafic factor scores are highest in a previously undefined rock type rich in cummingtonite, biotite, and chlorite; lacking in quartz; and closely associated with at least one ore horizon. Detrital dilution of ironstone, calculated from chromium and nickel content, drops off significantly as ore-bearing ironstone is approached. This observation may indicate that centers of gold precipitation have protected themselves, either topographically or by rapid deposition, from detrital contamination. Gold mineralization correlates most strongly with the sulfide- rich factor. Gold may have been introduced through hotspring activity as a bisulfide complex.

A custom-designed shotcrete system, consisting of an 8-m3 (10-cu-yd) transit mixer and a shotcrete spray boon carrier, is used by a two-man crew to transport and place up to 25 m3 (32 cu-yd) of steel fiber reinforced, dry, silica fume shotcrete per 11-hour shift. Shotcrete is custom blended by a local supplier and delivered predampened. Mix design and quality control are performed with a computer program that develops and graphs a properly balanced mix based upon the materials sieve analyses.

The White Mesa uranium/vanadium mill is six miles south of Blanding, UT, on the Colorado Plateau, which has historically spawned more than 200 uranium mines. As uranium prices approached an all-time high during the mill planning period, Energy Fuels Nuclear Inc. anticipated the reopening of many of these mines, whose low grade ore suddenly looked economic. The company located the White Mesa mill close to these mines, to minimize hauling distances to the mill and give vendors added incentive to reopen or expand mine operations. A receptive local community, a relatively unencumbered trip through the regulatory maze, and some mill circuit innovations all helped to make the White Mesa mill a well functioning reality. From a strategic standpoint, and to begin ore stockpiling as early as possible, Energy Fuels constructed two ore buying stations and began receiving ore in early 1977. The buying stations were located at Hanksville and at what is now the Blanding mill site. Ore receipts at Hanksville did not materialize as anticipated and the facility has since been closed. The Blanding ore buying station is now an integral part of the milling operation. All ores, whether company, vendor, or for toll milling, are received at the Blanding station. The Blanding site was central to the plateau mines, and was well received by area residents, who encouraged the introduction of industry to the area. Residents viewed mill construc¬tion as an economic blessing and were prepared to accept the associated im¬pacts. Energy Fuels hired as many local people as possible for mill opera¬tions.

The deposition of metastable carbonate minerals in ar. aid, sheltered, coastal environment, leads to the formation of a flat, coastel, sabkha plain. The ground waters of the sabkha plain are modified by evaporation, precipitation of salts and reaction between ions in solution and the host carbonates. The resulting brine is similar to those found in fluid inclusions associated with Mississippi Valley type deposits. The aragonite and high magnesium calcite found in the sediments can concentrate lead and zinc from sea water. On diagenesis the lead and zinc are released into the sabkha brines.

"Dilution — planned and unplanned – remains a significant cost impairment in the mining process. A series of trials were held over a sixmonth period in fiscal year 2018 (FY18) that established the cost-benefit of new technology as it applies to the alignment accuracy of production drilling rigs in underground mining, thus confirming its ability to limit drilling as one of the causes of dilution. The trials identified three underlying factors affecting drilling accuracy, measurable by blast-hole deviation surveys of planned versus actual toe data. These were rig alignment error, collar location change/ error and in-hole deviation.The trials involved a comparison of existing rig setup processes and technology, with the new technology (Minnovare’s Production Optimizer system). The trials were undertaken in the same environment: the Cracow gold mine, an operating underground mine. The comparison first revealed the extent to which rig alignment impacts blast-hole deviation. Secondly, the new technology was proven to limit rig alignment error, thereby reducing average blast-hole deviation and increasing the number of holes drilled within tolerance by 160 percent.The increased accuracy reduced stope dilution by reducing over-break of subgrade ore. The new technology was implemented at Cracow during the latter half of 2018. Despite utilizing the new technology for just six months of the year, the mine recorded a 5 percent overall reduction in dilution for the full year compared to the previous year (FY17); from 22 percent down to 17 percent (a net decrease of 22.7 percent). Mine management attribute a significant proportion of this reduction to the new technology, along with sequencing and planning improvements. This opinion is backed by detailed stope reconciliation data taken during the trial from 28 stopes — representing 20 percent of the total tonnes mined during FY18. The data identified that stopes drilled using the new technology recorded 62.6 percent less average dilution."

As a cheap, renewable and non-toxic material, starch can contribute to the sustainability of the flotation process, albeit in a minor way as one type of reagent in systems involving materials with far greater impact. But the physical and chemical versatility of starch can help address another issue, namely, that of processing complex ores with decreasing grades of valuable minerals and increasing mixtures of gangue. This paper compares the results of two lab scale flotation studies where starches (native wheat starch (NWS), dextrin and two oxidised wheat starches) were used to depress two common gangue minerals, copper-activated pyrite and carbon (graphite), over a range of dosages. The oxidised starch with the larger molecular weight structures depressed copper-activated pyrite best, and the oxidised starch with lower molecular weight structures was better at depressing graphite. In both cases, the oxidised starches allowed greater recovery of chalcopyrite, pointing to selectivity potential. The extent to which the carbonyl and carboxyl moieties of the oxidised starches contribute to depressant performance is difficult to quantify, but it should not be discounted. Importantly, the results demonstrate relatively simple modifications of native starch by oxidation can yield structures suitable for depressing gangue minerals with diverse surface properties. The challenge remaining for greater application of modified starch depressants is being able to replicate the desired structures at scale in cold-water-soluble form.

The drill and blast method is the most prominent rock excavation method used in mining and civil engineering projects. The ground vibration is the most undesirable effect of the blasting and needs to be controlled. The blasts are designed so that ground vibration at nearby structures must remain under the prescribed limit. Various empirical blast vibration attenuation models have been presented to estimate the ground vibration for designing purposes. These models assume ground vibration as a function of distance and maximum charge per delay. United States Bureau of Mines (USBM) model is most commonly used for the blast design. However, the uncertainty associated with these models is seldom characterized, thus diminishing its reliability. The probabilistic Bayesian approach associated with the Monte Carlo method can easily quantify uncertainties associated with the model and its parameters. Thirty-three blast vibration observation data from a granite quarry in Kerala, India, is used to estimate the probability distribution of model parameters. Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) approach is used for sampling 12,000 samples for obtaining the posterior distribution of parameters. The uncertainty associated with model parameters is quantified from the posterior distribution, and this is further used to estimate the credible and prediction limits of the model. The point estimate of the most optimum value of the parameter is estimated using maximum-aposteriori or MAP estimate. The model parameters are also obtained using the commonly used least-square error method, which is a maximum likelihood estimation or MLE approach. It has been observed that the accuracy of the model obtained using both MAP and MLE approach is almost equal. However, the MAP estimate as per Bayesian probabilistic analysis has the added advantage that it can estimate the uncertainty of parameters as well as the model, which is not possible using the MLE approach.

This transformation is reflected in new levels of production, consumption and trade, in shits in the location and size of markets, in the tapping of far distant sources of iron ore, and in the emergence of new export centres catering on an increasing scale to ore deficient, importing countries. Within the broad framework of shifting supply/demand relationships, certain operationally meaningful adjustments can be singled out for special mention: 1. The iron and steel industry has undergone vigorous and aggressive expansion, during the post-war period, not only in the capitalist world and among the socialist bloc, but in backward regions as well. New countries have been added to the list of steel producers, while new facilities have been relocated by established steel makers. 2. Overall demand for iron ore has risen rapidly, arid has flowed different channels.

This study compares the cementation performance of metallic iron, metallic aluminum, and metallic tin in terms of the reaction conditions and parameters in synthetic antimony chloride solutions. The effects on the antimony recovery (%) caused by the cementators’ types, stirring speed, reaction time, and temperatures were explored thoroughly. The cementation kinetics of antimony were also explored for each cementator. The activation energies were determined to be 10.99, 9.09, and 13.58 kJ mol– 1 for Al, Fe, and Sn, respectively. The results reveal that the reaction is diffusion controlled, and comparable results were obtained for each cementator. At 25 °C, 40 mg of iron powder was found to reduce all antimony ions (i.e., approx. 99% recovery), but even when 100 mg of Al and Sn cementators were used, the antimony recovery did not reach 100%. This result shows that iron is the best candidate to cement antimony out of the solution.

Butler Taconite, operated by the Hanna Mining Company, is an Iron ore pelletizing operation that is located on the Western end of the Mesabi Iron Range in Northeastern Minnesota. The operation mines low-grade taconite ore and through primary crushing, two stage grinding, magnetic separation, agglomerating and indurating, produces 2.6 million annual tons of high quality, 66% iron pellets. Mining and stripping is done with 13 - M100 trucks and 5 - 12 cu. yd. shovels. The operating processes in the concentrator and pellet plant are primarily con¬trolled through a centralized control room and monitored by a PDP l140 computer. During 1969 and 1970, a re-organization of the Company took place. Through this re-organization, each mine unit was analyzed and studied to determine the proper staffing of the internal departments. At this time, it was decided to continue with further detailed studies of the Maintenance Department with the intent to reduce maintenance costs. Maintenance costs at the time of the re-organization were 38.6% of the total mine operating cost. The preliminary study indicated that the Maintenance Department had a system of maintenance, as a matter of fact, it had a separate system in each sub-maintenance division and in some of the sub-divisions each foreman had a system of his own. Therefore, from the data collected, it was decided to develop one system of maintenance that could be utilized throughout the entire operation. To determine the type of system suitable to all phases of the operation, detailed time and method studies were conducted. All types of maintenance tasks performed at the operation were studied. The data collected was analyzed and the recommended improved methods were reviewed with the Maintenance Superintendent and his staff. The new improved methods that were accepted as feasible, were introduced into the system immediately.

Coal is China's main source of energy. In 1988, 76.1% of commercial energy consumption was supplied by coal. To provide a rational utilization of its coal resources, China has paid considerable attention to coal preparation over the last 10 years. In 1980, there were only 105 washeries treating about 100 million tonnes of coal, but by 1988 there were 151 washeries treating 171 million tonnes per year. This paper describes the development of China's coal preparation industry; its growth, the equipment, and the technology. Statistics and information on the current status of the industry are also be presented.

Florida is usually thought of as a vacation State, not a mining State, yet Florida has been the leading producer of phosphate rock in the United States for 85 consecutive years and in 1978 supplied over 80 percent of the national output and over 30 percent of the world's output. It is estimated that the Central and South Florida phosphates contain 412,800 short tons (374,000 metric tons) of U308, that 115,000 short tons (104,000 metric tons) of U308 will be contained in the wet-process phosphoric" acid procsssed in the United States through the year 2000, and that 54,000 short tons (49,000 metric tons) of U308 will be available from Florida. In 1978, two companies in Florida and one in Louisiana went on-stream recovering uranium oxide from wet-process phosphoric acid and three others started construction of U308 extraction facilities. These six companies will have the capacity to recover 2,137 short tons (1,900 metric tons) of U308 annually in 1980, which will account for about 15 percent of our domestic requirements.

"Current Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) risk models and asbestos fiber counting techniques for monitoring airborne exposures treat all fibers as being equivalent and ignore the effect of dimension on toxicity. While this may have been appropriate when modern analytical methods were not available, the measurement world is now fully capable of making the appropriate distinctions. The importance of width as a determinant of carcinogenicity has been recognized for nearly 30 years within the published literature. Stanton,1 in a landmark study of a suite of fibrous materials, found that durable mineral fibers with widths less than 0.25 mm and lengths longer than 8 mm were causally associated with the induction of tumors. Pott,2 in a later study, postulated a fiber toxicity model that agreed reasonably well with the Stanton findings, but extended the concept to include varying toxicity as a function of length and width. Wylie et al.3 reanalyzed samples used by Davis et al.4 and found that tumor generation was strongly and inversely correlated with fiber width. Crump5 testified increasing fiber length was correlated with disease occurrence. Lippman6 reviewed a number of studies and suggested that mesothelioma was closely associated with long, thin fibers. Berman et al.7 published a risk model, which found that disease was correlated almost exclusively with fibers longer than 40 mm and width less than 0.25 mm. Recently, Loomis et al.8 reanalyzed textile mill samples and found that aspect ratios greater than 40:1 were highly correlated with disease. Incorporation of width into risk models has been limited by the availability of data from operating asbestos plants and, in particular, the observation of an asbestos plant for which there is no observable mesothelioma. There have been only limited studies published on the dimensions of asbestos fibers, with a few serving as the primary references in other literature.9_13 A rare opportunity to collect detailed concentration and dimensional data of airborne crocidolite from an operating asbestos-cement plant using modern analytical procedures arose, providing a chance to supplement the existing literature on airborne fiber dimensions. The asbestos-cement plant is located in the eastern end of Cochabamba, Bolivia along Highway 4. Cochabamba is a relatively large city located in the Andes Mountains, approximately 250 km southeast of the capital La Paz. The city sits in a valley that runs east-west with mountains to the north and south. The crocidolite used in the products made at this facility is mined in central Bolivia, approximately 75 km northwest of Santa Cruz. The crocidolite is a fibrous magnesioriebeckite 14 (blue asbestos). Crocidolite fibers from Bolivia were the subject of prior reports suggesting the fibers are generally longer and thicker than crocidolite from Australia or South Africa.9 At the cement plant, the run-of-mine crocidolite was first pulverized using a hammer mill and then sieved on vibratory sieves to produce fibers of limited size ranges for use in the cement. The sieved crocidolite is mixed with other components, including recycled cement product, to produce a slurry that is vacuum filtered into sheet form. The sheets are then manually molded into a corrugated shape, air dried, and sawed (using circular saws) to accepted dimensions. The sawed sheets are cured in soaking pits for 28 days before being shipped to the consumer. Prior to shipping, the sheets are finished by a light hand sanding followed (at customer request) by applying one or more coats of paint. In flotation, hydrophobic particles are selectively collected by air bubbles, and the bubble-particle aggregates enter the froth phase. However, less hydrophobic particles drop off from the froth phase, while more hydrophobic particles are recovered. Thus, the froth phase provides an important cleaning mechanism. In the present communication, the froth-phase recovery process has been modeled by considering particle retention times and the carrying capacities of bubbles. The model predictions are compared with the experimental data reported by Seaman et al. (2006). The results show that the froth-phase recovery varies with particle size, particle hydrophobicity, and bubble coarsening.

Sulfate-impacted mine waters are under regulatory scrutiny to reduce total dissolved solids (TDS). There are several options to reduce TDS. One option is transforming the soluble sulfate into insoluble ettringite. The Water Company LLC (TWC) patented a process for sulfate removal through ettringite formation by reacting directly with metallic aluminum. Freeport-McMoRan (FMI) and TWC have collaborated to design, build and operate a 10-gallon-per-minute (gpm) ettringite pilot plant to establish reagent consumption, plant availability and full-scale design criteria. Using metallic aluminum as the primary aluminum source for ettringite precipitation eliminates the addition of other ions, resulting in significant demineralization. The pilot plant achieved greater than 98% water recovery, greater than 90% reagent efficiencies and maintained reactor sulfate levels below 250ppm. BACKGROUND Ettringite is a hydrated calcium, aluminum, sulfate mineral with the following formula: Ca6Al2(SO4)3(OH)12•26H2O Ettringite readily precipitates in high pH water and by doing so, removes sulfate from impacted waters. The SAVMIN process, piloted in South Africa, is one method to produce ettringite. In this process, aluminum hydroxide is the aluminum source. The Cost Effective Sulfate Removal (CESR) process is similar to SAVMIN, but uses a proprietary aluminum source instead of aluminum hydroxide. Outotec and Veolia also have their own versions of the process using their specialized process equipment. TWC patented a version of ettringite precipitation using metallic aluminum as the aluminum source for ettringite formation. The benefit of using aluminum metal is that no additional ions are added to the process. NMBGMR has been collecting data on uranium mining districts, mines and mills since it was created in 1927 and has converted years of historical data into a relational database that can be imported in ArcMap. The database includes information on mining districts, mines, mills, geochemistry, photographs, and bibliography. The available data includes location, production, reserves, geologic, geochemical, resource potential, and other data. The NURE stream-sediment data provides geochemical analyses for >27,000 samples collected in New Mexico during 1970s. The NURE hydrogeochemical data provides analyses for water samples. ArcMap includes location of individual ore bodies as polygons and incorporates the mines and NURE data as individual site locations. The purposes of these databases are to provide computerized data that will aid in identifying and evaluating resource potential, resource development and management, production, and possible environmental concerns, such as physical hazards (i.e. hazardous mine openings), indoor radon, regional exposure to radiation from the mines, background geochemical data and point-sources of possible pollution in areas of known mineral deposits.

Low flotation recovery and selectivity have been long-standing problems in the treatment of most ultra-fine phosphate ores. This paper investigates the improved flotation of two ultra-fine Brazilian phosphate ores from Itafos’ Arraias project. These ores are predominantly composed of quartz, muscovite, apatite and a Ca-Al phosphate. As a result of fine phosphate dissemination and associated grinding requirements, column flotation was selected for the metallurgical test program to address the inherent limitations of fine particle flotation using conventional flotation cells. Accordingly, both benchtop Denver cell and laboratory column flotation tests were conducted to optimize their respective flotation responses. Improved flotation performance was achieved using column flotation as compared to benchtop mechanical flotation. In column flotation, a P2O5 concentrate grade of 30.5-31.0% was yielded at a flotation recovery of 83.7-85.1% for the 38x0µm generated ultrafines. The benefits of Eriez’ column flotation technology realized from this study include a higher degree of selectivity, increased recovery, and reduced collector dosage as compared to bench-scale mechanical flotation.
