The roles of pulsating mechanisms such as the amplitude and frequency of the jig cycle are well established in jigging. Also well established are the roles of the size ratio and the volume fraction of the feed. In iron ore beneficiation plants, these process parameters are optimized to achieve the highest efficiency. However, the role of one of the more important feed characteristics, the liberation characteristic of the feed, has not been studied in detail. Evaluation of the liberation characteristics is difficult because the required washability test is not viable for iron ore feed. In this paper, a new method is proposed in which the liberation characteristics are measured through a separation efficiency value. In the new evaluation method, jigging parameters such as amplitude and frequency of the jig cycle are optimized from the fundamental understanding of the process dynamics and feed characteristics such as size distribution. Then, feeds with different liberation characteristics are tested to evaluate the liberation characteristics of feed in jigging.

M.S. Azun The authors' paper did not explain the facts and reasons why state companies are established and what their role is in international industrial mineral trading. Also, I do not agree with the conclusion implying that the main goal for state companies is to capitilize natural resources. Almost all state companies are founded by certain laws and their activities are arranged by state regulations. Their only aim is to operate mineral deposits for their people and to protect the rights of the people. Although some ore deposits, such as nonstrategic or small, may be exploited by privately owned companies, the state has the right to control the operation and production. Activities of state companies may or may not be widened because of the character of the deposits and the importance of the mineral market involved. For some countries, although governments may occasionally change hands, the policy of the mineral trading system is not affected by this change. There is no doubt that any government desires to make more earnings to increase GNP, when it is involved in operating and trading mines. It wants to produce and sell the finished products, instead of unprocessed ones, if possible. When it is known that some mineral deposits are relatively rare, such as Turkish boron deposits, the government can nationalize the mines to control production and affect the market. If there is an abundance of a certain mineral in the market, the government can cut production and set a floor price, such as Canadian potash. Also, when production of a specific mineral is unique, such as Turkish chromite, the price of such mineral may be set by correspondant government. One may add that if some governments with their state companies produce a certain mineral in a larger amount, they may decide to establish a cartel to protect their production and price. These are the facts followed by government-owned state companies and partially government-owned companies. The reason being charge of many deposits by the state companies is always the same: "protect" the mineral rights of the people.

There are many advantages to upgrading coal with dry jigging technology. The most obvious is the lack of process water, which eliminates the need for fines dewatering and slurry confinement. Dry jigging eliminates the clean coal moisture penalty associated with wet processing. Particulate emissions are virtually nonexistent due to inclusions of fabric dust collectors on all modern dry jig plants. Because of the environmentally friendly nature of dry jig plants, installation permits are often measured in days, not months. There has also been a fundamental advance in dry jigging efficiency. All of these advantages have renewed the coal industry’s interest in dry jigging. But air jigging is not right for every application. There are limitations due to particle size, particle shape, moisture and near gravity content. This article explores the evolution of dry jigging. It reviews parameters important for determining the suitability of dry jigging. It also compares historical performance data as measured by imperfection, against results from modern dry jigging technology. The article also presents data from modern dry jig installations.

Tunnel and shaft plugs have been designed to assist in construction of new and rehabilitation of existing tunnels and shafts. Tunnel plugs have been used to provide construction access for side by side tunnels, separation of raw and treated water, and to allow operation of one tunnel during construction of a nearby tunnel. Shaft plugs have been used to seal up surface openings to tunnels and to prevent seepage of water to the surface through adjacent tunnels or shafts. The design construction details of tunnel and shaft plugs are provided. Typical examples of tunnel and shaft plugs are provided.

The Society for Mining, Metallurgy and Exploration’s origins can be traced back to 1871. This was when 22 Pennsylvania coal mining engineers founded the American Institute of Mining Engineers (AIME). The organization’s objective was to “promote the arts and sciences connected with economic production of the useful minerals and metals, and the welfare of those employed in those industries by all lawful means.” Metallurgy and Petroleum were added to the AIME name in 1919 and 1956, respectively. Divisions of AIME were formed throughout the following years in recognition of the increasing trend toward specialization among mineral industry engineers. At the time, SME’s divisions consisted of the Coal Division (1930, now known as the Coal and Energy Division), the Industrial Minerals Division (1935), the Mineral and Metallurgical Processing Division (1948) and the Mining and Exploration Division (1949). The Environmental Division was created in 1997.

Introduction Some people say it is almost impossible to get mining permits in California. Some say the day of the lone mining entrepreneur is past. And some say you cannot make money mining gold where old-timers have already mined it, especially in Tertiary gravels. But a young mining operator and SME member, Tim Callaway, is proving these ideas wrong. Callaway's company, Brush Creek Mining and Development Inc., has the necessary permits for its Gardner's Point gold mine in Sierra County, CA. And, Callaway has secured funds for the 7.7 km'/d (10,000 cypd) Tertiary gravel operation. The company's initial goal is to produce 373 to 466 kg/a (12,000 to 15,000 oz per year) of gold at Gardner's Point mine at a cost of less than $6.43/g ($200 per oz). Feasibility studies are currently being conducted to consider product levels up to the 1555 kg/a (50,000 oz per year) involving additional plants and infrastructure. While exploring for other hard-rock properties, the Brush Creek company already operates the Brush Creek lode gold mine. The mine sits high on a ridge south of Goodyear's Bar, which is located on the North Yuba river. It might be noted that the Brush Creek mine has been the subject of media stories recounting how a mine can operate with sensitivity to the environment. Gardner's Point project In 1983, Callaway negotiated with the Gardners Point Ltd. Partnership for control of the Gardner's Point property. The Partnership had been engaged for three years in securing permits, mapping and drilling, and test mining. The Partnership actually mined about 43.5 dam3 (57,000 cu yd) of gravel, which yielded 25.2 kg (810 oz) of free gold. Later, the Brush Creek company acquired ownership of the property. The company then began its own exploration and development program. As underground development proceeded at the Brush Creek mine, plans matured for a high-volume operation at Gardner's Point. Australian and English investors contacted Callaway. A joint venture was negotiated. The Australian owners became majority participants; the Brush Creek company, a minority participant and the operator. The Australian investors agreed to contribute $3.5 million (60%) to the Brush Creek Joint Ventures. The Brush Creek company will contribute its expertise as well as assets and liabilities valued at $2.3 million (40%). About $2 million has been allocated to the Gardner's Point project. Later, Brush Creek Mining and Development Inc. sold 50.4% of the company's common stock to English investors for $5.4 million. Callaway negotiated this private placement, which permits further exploration of projects being investigated. Geography and history The Gardner's Point mine is located in the northern Sierra Nevada of California, about 9.6 km (6 miles) east of the little town of La Porte in Plumas County. The mine lies high on a ridge above Slate Creek, which divides Plumas and Sierra Counties. La Porte is accessible from the Sacramento area by a winding, paved, two-lane highway. But the mine is reached only by two different unpaved county and Forest Service roads. Both roads include steep grades in and out of the Slate Creek canyon. In September 1985 we published a questionnaire asking about the content of MINING ENGINEERING and about your interests. By Dec. 10, our cutoff date, we had 430 responses, representing about 1.5% of the 28,238 people who received the September issue of ME. In the data that follow the tabulation and percentages are based on the number of individuals who responded to the particular question. About ME Through responses to the questionnaire, we were hoping to learn more about you, your interests, and how the magazine could better serve you. Those of you who responded told us something positive - you look at or read the magazine. Of the 430 respondents, 428 or 99.5% indicated that they had read or looked through the July and/or August issues. Those of you who refer to the magazine once are 207 or 48.5%. Those of you who refer to the magazine two or three times are 193 or 45.2%. Those of you who refer to the magazine four or more times are 27 or 6.3%. How much time do you spend reading the magazine? The selection of a shaft size for ventilation purposes is a classic problem of concern to mining engineers. This presentation is concerned with the sizing of conventionally-sunk circular shafts with concrete or shotcrete linings. Costs of sinking shafts of three different depths (from 500 feet to 1000 feet) and six different diameters (from 14 feet to 24 feet) were obtained through questionnaires to shaft contractors. The primary objective of the economic model presented is the balancing of detailed annual capital and operating costs to achieve the minimum overall cost of the shaft installation over its life. The economic model is similar to previous analyses but treats several of the individual cost categories in an updated fashion. Included in the paper is a detailed analysis of the effects of varying power costs on optimal shaft size. Also included are a statistical analysis of current shaft costs and comments on the choice between shotcrete and concrete linings.

In the sintering of iron ores, the partial substitution of anthracite coal for coke breeze has been considered to be an effective way of reducing emissions and improvement in sintering properties. In the present study, the combustion characteristics of the anthracite coal and coke breeze were investigated and its influence on product sinter quality and sinter flue gases is being monitored. Pot trials are carried out with different coke breeze ratios, 0%, 40%, 50%, 60%, and 100%. It is found that as the percentage of anthracite coal is increased from 0 to 100%, the sintering time decreased from 24 to 20 min, and the productivity increased from 2.25 to 2.60 t/h/m2. Up to 60% anthracite coal substitution Tumbler index (+ 6.3 mm%), Product yield (+ 5 mm%), and fines generation (− 5 mm%) is found 62.29%, 85.17%, and 15.33%; moreover, hematite ( Fe2O3), magnetite ( Fe3O4), calcium ferrite phases ( CaFe2O4, CaFe3O5), and Silico ferrite of calcium and aluminum (SFCA) are major mineral phases found during microstructural analysis of product sinter. Part I describes the general geology of the Florida deposits. As the lucrative Bone Valley Formation is depleted, replacement production will move progressively into areas of total Hawthorn production. The reserves of the immediate future are a mixture of two distinct ore types referred to as the upper (high grade) zone and the lower (low grade) zone. The upper zone is somewhat similar to the Bone Valley Formation that has been Florida's source of production for the past 100 years and will respond favorably to present beneficiation practices. By contrast, the lower zone ore contains significant quantities of dolomite that must be removed in order to produce an acceptable grade pebble or flotation sized product. Part II reviews past practice and describes future trends in mining and ore transportation. This presentation (Part III) is confined to the problems of beneficiation, waste disposal, and environmental regulation.

"Within the energy concept of the German government, the operating time of nuclear power plants was initially extended from about 8 to 14 years. It is planned, however, that every power plant will gradually be decommissioned until 2025 and that simultaneously the amount of renewable energies will successively be expanded. According to the political state, nuclear energy is a discontinued model. Looking at the global energy market, though, an obviously opposed development can be observed. At the moment, 443 nuclear power plants are running worldwide and further 62 facilities are being built. These about 500 nuclear power stations have to be supplied with nuclear fuel right now and in the future. The present paper will describe the worldwide use of nuclear energy, the extraction of the nuclear fuel uranium and in detail the available and predicted resources of uranium. The conclusion of the paper is the statement that uranium as nuclear fuel is no scarce resource but sufficiently available."

Land access and tenure certainty for exploration and mine development is absolutely critical to the foundation of a healthy, sustainable and environmentally-sound mineral exploration and mining sector. Without certainty, mineral exploration will be severely eroded, resulting in reduced possibility of discovering and developing new mines. The development of positive relationships based on a shared commitment of understanding, mutual respect and trust by First Nations and the mineral sector can provide this increased business certainty and social and economic benefits for local First Nations. As a sector, we face many challenges in regard to building relationships with First Nations. The root solution to addressing these challenges lies in recognizing and understanding the unique cultural differences that exist between indigenous people and the business community. From the Canadian perspective, the First Nations culture differs vastly from non-Aboriginal culture. It is equally as imperative that cultural differences be acknowledged and respected at home as they are when seeking business opportunities in other countries. The traditional “business” approaches and relationships that one understands and incorporates with one’s contractors, legal counsel, investors and Board are generally not be the best approach for the introductory and subsequent meetings with indigenous peoples. This paper is written from the perspective of my experiences accumulated over the past ten years, first as Manager of Aboriginal Affairs for one of the largest forest companies in British Columbia and now, as President and CEO of the Association for Mineral Exploration BC (AME BC). My opinions are not necessarily endorsed by AME BC. Before the gritty issues of consultation and benefit sharing are dealt with, it is worthwhile to clear up the confusion surrounding terminology. “Indigenous Peoples” is used in a global context; “Aboriginal Peoples” is used in the Canadian context therefore includes Métis, Inuit and First Nations Peoples. The term “First Nations”, in the context of British Columbia, perhaps has its roots in the fact that treaties have largely not been settled. Therefore it is important to reaffirm that British Columbia was not discovered. First Nations have resided in British Columbia since time immemorial.

The gray, dark gray and black colors of the sediments and the presence of pyrite in the Carlin, Jerritt Canyon, Horse Canyon, Betze, and Gold Acres sediment-hosted disseminated gold (SHDG) deposits indicate that these rocks are not oxidized with respect to carbon and iron sulfide. Both ore and non-ore host rocks generally are dark colored. Analyses for noncarbonate carbon (usually called organic carbon) in samples from SHDG deposits and related unmineralized rocks indicate that these rocks contain from a few tenths to a few percent carbon. We use the term noncarbonate carbon because, strictly speaking, organic carbon denotes carbon that is bound to hydrogen. However, the carbon present in SHDG deposits and related rocks has very little hydrogen chemically bound to it. Rocks with less than 2% organic carbon are usually gray in color. The dark colors in our samples are due to the relatively high temperatures that these rocks have experienced relative to organic matter maturation. We confirm the results of Nelson et al. (1982) that previous reports (for example, Radtke and Scheiner, 1970) were incorrect in reporting significant amounts of humic acids, extractable hydrocarbons (bitumen) or "carbonaceous" material. We believe these reports had problems with contamination or misdirected emphasis. Our samples consisted of unweathered rocks, collected mainly from mine cuts (benches, trenches, cores) and put into glass containers or wrapped in aluminum foil to avoid contamination. Only a few samples were collected from natural outcrops. We were careful to avoid samples in proximity to blast holes that were packed with ammonium nitrate and diesel fuel ("ANFO"). Contamination by ANFO may explain some of the previous reports of hydrocarbons, pyrobitumens, humic acids and anomalous nitrogen. When we were collecting samples, it was apparent that in addition to lithologic and color differences, the surface appearance of the rocks was distinguishable: "preg robbing" material that had a sooty surface; "graphitic" rock with a shiny surface; and more ordinary rocks that had a flat gray or black appearance. [Preg robbing is a term for ores that adsorb gold from the milling circuit; the graphitic material had not been x-rayed to actually identify graphite.] We hoped that laboratory study of these samples would show some fundamental differences that we could relate to ore genesis. Even though these sample types appeared different in the field, we could not distinguish any differences in thermal maturity (see below). Normal petroleum/organic geochemical laboratory procedures (solvent extraction, Rock-eval, pyrolysis-gas chromatography) failed to yield much information because the carbon was over-mature relative to oil and gas generation. Rock-eval results show less than 20 (± 20) mg of pyrolizable hydrocarbons per gram organic carbon (and an indeterminate Tmax) indicating that the organic matter in these deposits is burned-out relative to petroleum generation [with an H/C (atomic) ratio of less than 0.41. Because of the non-definitive results from standard organic geochemical methods, x-ray diffraction (XRD) and Raman spectroscopy were used to characterize the carbon. Prior to XRD, samples were treated with HCl and HF acids (1) to remove quartz that has a peak near 26° [20] at the position of the 002 peak of graphite and (2) to concentrate the carbon to a level detectable by XRD. The residue was put on a colodion mount and analyzed by XRD. The XRD analyses yielded a broad peak at 26° [20]. The shape of this peak indicates that the carbon is more thermally mature than anthracite rank coal but less mature than crystallized graphite. Based on XRD results from the literature (Landis, 1971) that are calibrated to metamorphic facies, results from our samples correspond to pumpellyite-actinolite to lowermost greenschist facies conditions, probably

Your thoughts on the current status of the global minerals industries? The global economic, technological, social and political changes of the last two decades of the 20th century resulted in the emergence of a restructured minerals industry. This industry is now based on a new cost-cutting philosophy; utilization of modern technology; productivity gains rather than production tonnages; diversification of mineral markets; and globalization of exploration, mining and processing. Quantity and tons used to be the focus. The emphasis today is on remaining competitive in the marketplace by lowering per-unit production costs as much as possible. What factors and trends will impact the minerals industries in this, the 21st century? A number of parameters will impact minerals operations and shape the future sustainability and growth of the minerals industries. Increased demand for minerals will be accompanied by the demand for technical advancements. We will also see a continued emphasis on health and safety, environmental stewardship, and education and training. Let me elaborate.

Many conventional structural analysis and design methods in current use are not appropriate for the mining industry. Two major reasons for this are that: • The economic life of a particular mine is limited, and • Much of the equipment and machinery used by the mining industry operates at relatively low speeds. Both of these factors can have significant cost implications if they are not properly accounted for during plant design. In particular, the often used practice of mitigating excessive vibration by adding mass to machinery supports is not only expensive but may worsen the vibration effects. Some of these problems, such as increased wear and tear, are not always easy to trace back to inappropriate design. This article focuses on vibration related issues and demonstrates that the mining sector has unique problems requiring unique solutions. Vibration: the basics Historic developments leading to current vibration design practices provide the key to why such practices are often inappropriate for the mining industry. To understand this, it is necessary to introduce some basic vibration theory. Consider a simply supported beam or foundation on which a vibrating machine is mounted. For analysis of the system's dynamic response, it may be viewed as a mass attached to a spring and a damper, such as the shock absorber of a car.

The 20th Century saw the modern mining industry enriched by one outstanding method of extracting of mineral resources called Borehole Mining (BHM). Mean while, despite its successful track record in wide ranging locales, few specialists are yet aware of this technology. The intent of this article is to introduce borehole mining to a wider spectrum of drilling and mining professionals. The BHM method is based on in-situ water jet cutting of rock mass. On Fig. 1 the schematic of the method is presented. The borehole mining tool 1 is lowered into the borehole 2 and high pressure water 3 is pumped down. At the bottom part of the tool, one portion of that water comes out through the hydromonitor nozzle 4 in a shape of water jet 5 and cuts the material 6 creating slurry 7. The other portion of high pressure water then comes to the hydroelevator 8 (jet pump, eductor) which produces a vacuum. When the slurry reaches this vacuum zone, the eductor sucks the slurry and pumps it up to the surface, where rock parts are separated from water in a tank 9 or a pond and clarified water is pumped down again closing the re-circulating BHM water supply system. The borehole mining tool is suspended on a drill rig tower 10 which allows the tool to rotate and move vertically along the borehole axis. While extracting rock mass, underground caverns (stopes) 11 are created. If necessary, compressed air 12 can be injected to the raising slurry flow to create an airlift effect. Also, a secondary agent 13 (such as oil, foam, etc.) can be added to the stope through the gap between the tool and the casing. As seen from the illustration, BHM is the remote mining method of extracting of mineral resources through boreholes by high pressure water jets.

The leaching of a complex matte in chlorine and chloride media was studied. The matte was prepared from manganese nodules by the reduction smelting-sulfidation route. From XRD analysis, the major phases of the matte were identified as CuFeS2, CuS2, (FeNi)9S8, (FeNi)S2, Ni9S8, Ni3S2, (CoFeNi)9S8 and Co metal. Investigated were the chlorine, hydrochloric acid, hydrochloric acid-oxygen, ferric chloride, ferric chloride-oxygen, cupric chloride and cupric chloride-oxygen systems. The results are discussed in terms of reagent concentration, retention time, leach temperature and gas sparging rate. The chlorination process resulted >99% metal extraction efficiency within a short retention time and at atmospheric temperature. However, there were no preferential extractions of Cu, Ni and Co with respect to Fe. The cupric chloride-oxygen system produced leach liquors with the lowest Fe content and with a high base-metal extraction. Sulfide sulfur was converted to mixtures of elemental sulfur and sulfate in all the studied systems.

In the mining industry, where some of the vehicles are larger than a one-story house, tire maintenance cannot be accomplished by the tire shop alone. It takes an army of people to maintain a fleet of 100 trucks that may be transporting gold, iron ore, oil sand, copper or coal from an openpit to a refinery and eventually delivering the product to a customer. Everyone working in and around these mammoth machines has a duty to help with the maintenance of the tires, whether they know it or not. These responsibilities comprise observation and reporting hazards up to and including changing out a tire and recording the information in a tire-tracking program such as TreadStat.

The Cripple Creek & Victor Gold Mining Co.(CC&V) celebrated completion of a two-year, $168.5-million expansion and capital improvement program. An open house celebration was held in the historic mining town of Victor, CO on Oct. 4, 2002. Hundreds of townspeople, the press and other invited guests from the mining industry joined the employees of CC&V in the celebration. The event included mine tours, company displays and a barbecue picnic, complete with a country and western band. The Cresson Mine is located about 40 km (25miles) west of Colorado Springs, CO between the towns of Cripple Creek and Victor. The mine is the only large-scale gold mining operation in Colorado and now employs about 300 (ME, October 2001, pp.21-28). The operation is a joint venture between Anglo-Gold (Colorado) (67%), based in Greenwood Village, CO, and Golden Cycle Gold (33%), based in Colorado Springs. CC&V is managed by AngloGold North America. AngloGold North America is the U.S. subsidiary of AngloGold, the world’s second largest gold mining producer. AngloGold is based in Johannesburg, South Africa.

In conjunction with steady increases in production levels, longwall operators have applied greater quantities of ventilating air and spray water in an effort to control respirable dust and/or methane. Air velocities greater than 7.6 m/s (1500 fpm) have been measured on longwall faces. Operators have expressed concern over the potential entrainment of respirable dust at these high velocities. The greatest likelihood for entraining dust into the high velocity airstream may occur as shields are advanced allowing relatively dry particles to fall from the shield canopy directly into the airstream. Laboratory tests to simulate dust liberation during shield movement were conducted at the Pittsburgh Research Laboratory of NIOSH at velocities ranging from 2.0 to 8.2 m/s (400 to1600 fpm). Airborne dust samples were obtained with personal impactors to quantify the size distribution and concentration of the dust entrained at the various air velocities. Statistically significant increases in both total and respirable dust concentrations were measured as test air velocities were increased.
