Perhaps the most significant development in China's base metal sector is the discovery of major copper porphyries in northern Jiangxi Province and the adjacent southern Anhui Province. At the center of the new exciting district is the proposed Dexing copper complex, located some 350 km east of Nanchang, the provincial capital of Jiangxi. This project represents China's first attempt to put together a major large-scale open-pit operation, comparable in magnitude to Arizona porphyry operations. With the aid of Fluor Mining and Metals, the Chinese plan to develop a 135-175 kt/d open-pit mine, a matching large-scale mill, and the infrastructure needed to accommodate the big operations. An operation of this magnitude would significantly reduce China's import requirements by some 75%. China imports of the red metal are running around 200 kt/a. Under the direction of the Ministry of Metallurgical Industry, the Chinese are currently operating a 10-kt/d mine and mill with equipment primarily of Chinese origin. Dexing engineers told ME that they are considering a possible scale-up to 20 kt/d. How this effort will ultimately jell with the major expansion program is largely a matter of conjecture. Fluor Mining and Metals received a $10-million contract in December 1978 to develop a preliminary engineering and design program. While the original plans called for a 175-kt/d capacity complex, the Chinese subsequently decided to scale it down somewhat. The current proposal is around a 135 kt/d, which would in- elude the existing operation, according to Dexing engineers. Completion of the engineering and design phase is expected by March 1980 and a go-ahead decision will likely be made at that time. The value of the engineering and construction contract is estimated between $800 million and $1 billion. At right, mined ore is dumped 150 m down the mountain to a holding pocket below for rail haulage to the processing plant. Reserves and Early History The Dexing mineralization consists of three principal ore bodies, including the Chushahung on the north mountain, and the Tungchang and Fuchiawu on the south mountain. Combined ore reserves are estimated by mine geologists at 1.7 Gt of 0.4-0.5% copper. As is characteristic of porphyries, the ore contains important associated values of molybdenum, rhenium, pyrite, gold, and silver. There is also some secondary calcocite and bornite with an oxidized capping. Historically, copper was recovered with iron from the pregnant solutions emanating from the Tungchang deposit as early as the Tang Dynasty (700 AD). Until recently, the generation of electricity was regulated in all states and the value of generation assets in a regulatory environment for ad valorem taxation were based largely on the book value of the plant plus the rate of return on capital allowed by the state regulatory agency. This method of appraising utility generation assets is inappropriate in a competitive environment because past capital expenditures are not relevant in a competitive environment. However, it is not clear what valuation methods are appropriate after restructuring. This paper identifies key problems and advantages of other appraisal methodologies and makes comments on various valuation and taxation methods.

The Construction of Tunnel and Edison Force Mains contract involves the installation of two new force mains to provide a redundant means for sewage conveyance from Middlesex County Utility Authority?s (MCUA) Edison Pump Station on the northern shore of the Raritan River to the Central Wastewater Treatment Plant on the southern shore. The force mains will be installed in a 1,192 m (3,910 lineal foot) long tunnel with a 4.09 m (13'-5') inside diameter, fully gasketed precast concrete segmental lining, which is to be tunneled underneath the Raritan River utilizing an Earth Pressure Balance TBM. The tunnel is anticipated to encounter flowing soils near and beneath the river. Two new 60-inch diameter Centrifugal Cast Fiberglass Reinforced Polymer Mortar force mains will be installed within the tunnel leaving an open utility corridor above the force mains for future consideration. The project also includes the design and construction of two slurry wall shafts with associated piping. The paper will provide an overview of design and provide a case history of the construction of the tunnel and highlights of the construction methods implemented to date.

"Communities near sand mines and processing facilities in Wisconsin have raised concerns regarding possible exposure to ambient respirable (PM4) crystalline silica. Fenceline PM4 (particulate matter captured with a 50 percent cut size of 4 micrometers aerodynamic diameter) crystalline silica concentration data were compiled at Fairmount Santrol Inc., Mathy Construction Inc. and U.S. Silica facilities. The long-term average PM4 crystalline silica concentrations ranged from 0.05 to 0.45 micrograms/m3 when sample values below the limit of quantification were treated as zeros. All of the long-term average concentrations were less than 20 percent of the Minnesota Department of Health’s and California Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment’s PM4 crystalline silica chronic reference exposure level of 3.0 micrograms/m3. The measured concentrations were consistently within the local background concentration range.Air Control Techniques P.C. compiled the sampling data using Thermo Fisher Scientific Inc. Partisol 2000i PM2.5 samplers meeting the requirements of 40 CFR Part 50, Appendix L. These samplers were adapted to capture particulate matter with a 50 percent cut size of 4 micrometers. The use of polyvinyl chloride filters allowed for crystalline silica X-ray diffraction analysis by NIOSH Method 7500. The combined use of adjusted PM2.5 filter-based samplers with Method 7500 crystalline silica analyses provided for a highly sensitive limit of quantification of 0.31 micrograms/m3 of PM4 crystalline silica.BackgroundIn 2005, the California Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment (OEHHA, 2005) adopted a 70-year chronic reference exposure level (REL) for PM4 (particulate matter having aerodynamic diameter of 4 micrometers or less) crystalline silica. The REL was extrapolated from occupational hygiene epidemiological studies, essentially all of which were based on in-plant PM4 crystalline silica measurements. No well-established ambient sampling technique for PM4 crystalline silica was available at the time that OEHHA adopted its REL. The personal samplers used for the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) Method 0600 in-plant sampling of employee exposure were designed for concentrations higher than ambient levels. The limit of quantification (LOQ) of PM4 crystalline silica on NIOSH 0600 filters was too high for the effective sampling of ambient air."

Electrical Vertical Sounding (EVS) profiling has proven to be a valuable tool to set the alignment and guide the design of a 17 km-long, 4.7m diameter water-conveyance tunnel in the Peruvian Andes at an altitude of 4,260 m. EVS profiling helped determine where to locate boreholes, and reduce the amount of drilling to 1,200 m of vertical and inclined boreholes. EVS profiling allowed the designer to identify and verify by drilling the existence of zones with difficult tunneling conditions that were avoided by realigning the tunnel. The rock quality was checked by drilling and a combined scheme of excavation by TBM and conventional drill and blast technique was developed for the final design.

A mathematical model to represent the expansion and fragmentation of copper matte particles oxidized under flash converting conditions is presented. The model assumes that the particles are initially nonporous, have a constant mass prior to fragmentation and travel at a constant velocity throughout the reaction chamber. The model requires the specification of the following five parameters: the particle expansion rate, a fragmentation diameter factor, a fragmentation size distribution parameter and the fractions of the finest and the coarsest particles in the feed that undergo fragmentation. The model predictions show good agreement with the experimental data collected in a laboratory furnace over a wide range of experimental conditions. The evolution of the size distribution of the particles along the reactor length was computed, and the model parameters were correlated with the experimental operating variables. Model predictions indicate that particle residence time is an important factor in the generation of dust. The presence of two maxima in the particle density function may be attributed to turbulent conditions prevailing in the furnace, which cause particles to follow different trajectories within the furnace even if they are injected at the same location.

The Gumuskoy silver mine, owned by the Etibank, in the province of Kutahya, Turkey, has been operating since 1987 with primary, secondary and tertiary crushers, and two parallel single stage ball mill circuits. Continuing problems with crushing and feeding of the ore to the ball mills, because of the moisture retaining and sticky nature of the ore, prompted an investigation into the possibility of converting the grinding circuit to an autogenous or semiautogenous grinding circuit. This would remove the bottleneck associated with the secondary and tertiary crushing. At the same time the target feedrate is to be raised from 140 t/h to 175 t/h. This paper demonstrates the response of five ore types, and blends of ore types in an onsite pilot plant test program, and also suggests how the variations can be handled in a SAG mill/ball mill circuit incorporating just one of the present ball mills.

The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (US EPA 319 program) provided funding to aid a public-private effort in the installation of an environmentally-friendly system to treat abandoned mine drainage at Jennings Environmental Education Center (Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources). Through this cooperative effort among state and federal agencies, mining, excavation, and environmental companies, college and home school students, Girl Scouts, and volunteers, a successful multi-component passive system, readily accessible for upgrades and public education/research activities, was built. 90 people were directly involved in construction of this award-winning system and about 1000 people annually benefit from the educational opportunities.

Laboratory testing was carried out to evaluate several devices for recovering clean coal from bituminous coal refuse material. The bulk of the testing focused on using a dense-medium cyclone to process -0.6-mm refuse material. A hindered-settling column and a spiral concentrator were also used to process 1.2x0.15-mm material. Product yields and ash contents were obtained for all tests, while partition curves were generated for selected tests from which the characteristic performance parameters (relative density of separation and probable error) were determined. The results indicated that the dense-medium cyclone was capable of cleaning down to 0.037 mm, while the other devices were effective to 0.15 mm.

The catalytic effect of ferrous ion in the industrial biohydrometallurgical heap and dump leaching processes is explained. During the bacterial leaching of metal sulfides, ferric ion will partly be hydrolyzed and a variety of sols, gels, amorphous and/ or crystalline mono- and polynuc- lear hydroxo- and sulfato complex species formed, especially by olation and aggregation reactions. There are many problems associated with these iron precipitates especially in the purification of leach solutions. The present study will discuss the iron precipitation reactions; gives kinetic and thermodynamic evaluations of the effect of temperature on pyrite and ferrous iron oxidation; and reports on the tolerance of heavy metal ion concentrations by Thiobacillus ferrooxidans.

Over the past few decades a great deal of effort has gone into characterizing the effects of frother type and concentration in flotation using a variety of two-phase techniques. Whilst useful and informative, this research still does not assist in the selection of suitable frothers for three-phase industrial-scale froths. This paper investigates the effects of frother type and concentration in a three-phase industrial froth. The objective was to determine if progress could be made in terms of understanding the behavior of frothers in flotation and understanding how they affect the sub-processes occurring in the pulp and froth phases and, ultimately, the metallurgical performance of a flotation cell.

The Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewerage District’s (MMSD)’s challenges of basement flooding and wet weather sewer overflows are being creatively addressed with the Northwest Side Relief Sewer tunnel. The $132 million, 20-foot diameter, and37,740 feet long conveyance and storage tunnel excavation in dolomite at depths reaching 165 feet below ground surface has been successfully completed within13 months in April 2004. This paper includes Owner’s perspective on the overall project, and the design and construction details by the Designer and the Contractor. The project contract documents included a comprehensive Geotechnical Data Report and the Geotechnical Baseline Report.

Probability function integration method is one of the influence function method. It is a widely accepted method in many mining districts in China and Poland mainly because its theory and formulae can well-represent the surface subsidence basins due to longwall mining of flat or near-flat seams. This paper introduces the basic theory of the probability function integration method and determines its 4 basic parameters by analyzing the measured subsidence profiles in eight longwall panels in Northern Appalachian Coal field. It also discusses the two methods for determining the 4 parameters. Finally the acquired parameters are used to predict the subsidence and deformation of the houses for damage assessment. Comparisons are made between the measured and the predicted subsidence. Probability Function Integration Method The probability function integration method for predicting surface movements and deformations is widely used in China and Poland. The governing equation of the method contains five parameters: subsidence factor, a, offset of inflection point, d, tangent of the major influence angle, tan fl, horizontal movement constant, b, and major dispersion angle e (e = 90. for flat seams). Its applicable range iis much larger including seams less than 30' from the horizontal, critical and noncritical mining and soft to hard overburden.

In 1989, an autogenous grinding task force was formed to study potential autogenous grinding circuits to replace the existing semi-autogenous grinding (SAG) at the National Steel Pellet Plant in Keewatin, MN. Pilot plant test work, performed by the Hanna Research Center (HRC), indicated that fully autogenous grinding with pebble extraction and crushing could be incorporated into the existing circuits. In 1990, one of the existing 10 grinding mills was converted for an in-plant test incorporating pebble crushing. Full-scale test work were conducted in 1990 and 1991. They verified the pilot plant projections with primary mill throughputs from the fully autogenous circuit using pebble crushing being greater than throughput of the existing SAG mill circuits. The plant produces 5 Mt/a (4.9 million ltpy) of iron ore pellets from 17.6 Mt (17.3 million It) of crude taconite. Crude ore is single-stage crushed by gyratory crushers. Primary grinding is performed by 10 semi-autogenous wet grinding mills. Secondary grinding is performed by five ball mills. Induration is with an Allis Chalmers grate-kiln pelletizing system. The primary grinding circuit consists of 108.2-m-diam x 5.5-m long (27 ft-diam x 18-ft) SAG mills. The mills are charged with 127 mm-diam (5 in.diam) steel grinding balls at from 3% to 5% by volume. Ball consumption rate is about 0.55 kg/t (1.25 lbs/lt) of crude ore feed to the mill. Each SAG mill is powered by two 2.6 MW (3500 hp) motors drawing 5450 kW (7300 hp) at 76% of critical speed. The mills are grate discharge with 16 mm (0.6 in.) slotted grate openings when new. The mill discharge is sized on a trommel screen having 4.5 mm (0.2 in.) openings. The plus 4.5 mm (+0.2 in.) oversize material is returned to the discharge end of the mill by a reverse screw auger located in the center of the trommel. The -4.5 mm (-0.2 in.) trommel screen undersize is pumped to magnetic cobbers.

Continuous mining machines are extensively used in the underground coal mining industry. These machines are typically remote-controlled, and severe injuries and fatalities occur every year when a miner is struck or pinned by the machine. Proximity detection systems offer a means to prevent these types of injuries and fatalities by sensing the presence of a miner and disabling machine motion. Researchers at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH)have developed the Intelligent Proximity Detection (iPD) system to provide enhanced protection while minimizing false alarms. The iPD system uses a set of pre-defined rules to determine which machine motions are safe and which would present a potential hazard, and automatically disables only the potentially hazardous motions. This system has been installed and tested on a Joy 14CM continuous mining machine at the NIOSH Office of Mine Safety and Health Research in Pittsburgh. Under laboratory conditions, the achievable accuracy and performance of the iPD system has been quantified with respect to a number of variables including position of the conveyor boom, presence of the machine?s trailing cable, and orientation of the miner-wearable component. The collection of hydrophobic particles in the froth phase in flotation has been studied. A continuous flotation cell was developed, in which the froth phase could be isolated from the pulp zone. Hematite particles, d80 = 87 µm, were floated in the pulp, using a conventional oleate collector, while glass spheres of similar diameter, d80 = 82 µm, were introduced in wash water added to the froth. Four samples of glass spheres, with contact angles between 0 and 82 degrees, were used. The results indicate that the efficiency of collection of the hydrophobic particles in the froth can be very high. The process is strongly influenced by the hydrophobicity of the particles and the surface area available for attachment in the froth. Recommendations for the flotation of particles in the froth phase are made, especially regarding the desirable hydrophobicity as reflected in the contact angle, the froth depth, the solids concentration in the feed to the froth, the air rate and the wash water rate.

Introduction ASARCO's Ray Operations include an open-pit copper mine in the Mineral Creek Mining District of Pinel County. The district is located in east central Arizona, 132 km (82 miles) southeast of Phoenix, AZ, and 126 km (78 miles) north of Tucson, AZ. The mine lies 8 km (5 miles) north of the Gila River in Mineral Creek Valley, between the Tortilla Mountains to the west and the Dripping Springs Range to the east. The rich copper deposits of the Mineral Creek mining district were first noted by a US Army Officer in 1847. The Ray Copper Company was the first major operation in the area. The company was named after the Ray mining claim, which was one of the earliest recorded claims. After decades of sporadic and unsuccessful mining ventures, the Ray Consolidated Mining Company was formed in 1910. The company introduced one of the first successful block caving operations in the world. In 1933, the Kennecott Copper Corporation acquired the Ray Consolidated Mining Company and continued operation of the mine under the same name until 1943, when the property was renamed the Ray Mines Division of Kennecott. Underground mining continued until 1955, when the mine was converted to an open pit operation. In November 1986, ASARCO Inc. purchased the Ray Mines Division and related facilities from Kennecott. The purchase also included the Hayden concentrator and the Ray Smelter, located approximately 32 km (20 miles) from the Ray Mine. This paper summarizes the 54,400 tpd (60,000 stpd) in-pit crusher and overland-conveying system and the 24,200 tpd (30.000 stpd) copper SAG concentrator and tailings disposal system constructed at ASARCO's Ray Complex - Ray Operations. General description of facilities The Ray concentrator includes a sulfide SAG concentrator, a "relocatable" in-pit primary-crushing plant and overland-conveyor system, a concentrator tailings-disposal system and plant ancillary facilities, The major elements of the project include: • A relocatable Fuller-Traylor in-pit 1524-mm (60-in) x 2261-mm (89-in) primary gyratory crusher at the 442 m (1450 ft) mine elevation. The crushing plant has a nominal capacity of 54,400 tpd (60,000 stpd) of sulfide ore. • A 1524-mm (60-in) wide x 1253-m (4110-ft) long overland belt conveyor, which runs from the in-pit crushing facility to a transfer station serving both the Ray Concentrator and the existing Hayden concentrator railroad load-out facility. • A 1524-mm (60-in) wide x 152-m (500-ft) long stackerbelt conveyor, which delivers a nominal 27,200 tpd (30,000 stpd) of ore from the transfer station to a 23,600 t (26,000 st) live-capacity coarse-ore stockpile serving the Ray Concentrator. • A nominal 27,200-tpd (30,000-stpd) concentrator, including semiautogenous grinding, flotation, copper concentrate filtration and associated plant ancillary facilities. • A tailings disposal system. Flotation tailings are pumped from the Ray Concentrator to a 122-m (400-ft) diam. thickener, located 4.8 km (3 miles) southeast of the Ray Concentrator site. The thickener overflow is pumped to two 76.2-m (250-ft.) diam. concrete process-water reservoirs. The thickener underflow, at 45% solids, is pumped to a new tailings disposal site located at Elder Gulch. • An HDPE-lined temporary-containment area to collect material from Ray Concentrator plant upsets and local storm-water run-off from a 100-year, 24-hour rain event. •A reclaim-water system from the Elder Gulch tailing pond area to the Ray Concentrator. • A 610-mm (24-in.) diam. x 31.9-km (19.2 mile) long fresh-water pipeline from the Hayden fresh-water-well field system to the Ray Concentrator. The overall process design criteria for the new Ray Concentrator is based on a nominal throughput of 27,200 tpd (30,000 stpd) of ore at 90% plant availability. However, based on the maximum performance capacity of the installed grinding equipment, it may be possible to achieve a sustained operating level in excess of 36,300 tpd (40,000 stpd) when processing soft ores. The effects of microwave treatment on the floatabilities and magnetic susceptibilities of some sulfide minerals, namely, pyrite, chalcopyrite, galena and sphalerite, were studied. Pure mineral samples were prepared in -425+212-µm, -212+106-µm and -106+38-µm size fractions. Microflotation and magnetic separation tests were carried out on the samples after microwave treatment at 600, 950 and 1,300 Watts for 5, 20, 60, 90, 120 and 240 seconds. The maximum temperature values of the samples were measured during the microwave treatment, and possible altera-tions on the mineral surfaces were determined by X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis. The effects of microwave treatment are discussed based on the result of microflotation and magnetic separation tests. The results revealed that pyrite, chalcopyrite and galena were heated very quickly and that their surface temperatures reached ~700° to 900°C, while the temperature of sphalerite reached only ~130°C. The floatability of pyrite, chalcopyrite and galena were decreased when microwave energy and the duration of treatment were increased, owing to oxidation of the mineral surfaces caused by relatively high temperature. As expected, there was no change in the floatability of sphalerite. The magnetic properties of pyrite and chalcopyrite were improved by the increase in microwave energy and the duration of treatment to such an extent that 90% of the feed separated as magnetic product. But no change was observed in the magnetic properties of galena and sphalerite.

This paper presents the use of non-parametric approach (i.e., data envelopment analysis, DEA) for the development of environmental sustainability indicators in mineral processing using environmental, economic and/or integrated indicators (i.e., indicators that interrelate two dimensions of sustainability). A case study based on real publicly available data is presented to illustrate how the proposed approach can be implemented in practice. The merit of this approach, which is based on the productive efficiency framework, is that it provides environmental sustainability indicators that can be used internally for benchmarking purposes and externally for sustainability reporting.

Distinct trends in grinding mill technology have emerged in recent years. In an effort to optimize overall mill performance for the needs of the End User, broad measures of logistical speed, process flexibility, operational risk, and overall costs now exert greater influence on the specification of grinding equipment. As a result, innovative alternatives to conventional grinding mill structures, supports, drives, feed, and discharge configurations are now being offered and selected with greater frequency. This paper investigates these trends in grinding mill technology, utilizing optimization and decision-theory techniques. In particular, the paper considers how specific advances in process design, product engineering, manufacturing techniques, and mining operations continue to relax technological constraints, enabling further mill innovation. In this context, a methodology is presented, illustrating how proper selection and specification of grinding mill components and configuration can target an optimization of the four End-User performance measures listed above.
