A modified approach to the implementation of Gy?s sampling theory is discussed and used to design a procedure for sampling crushed gold ore feed to metallurgical process plants. The approach involves calibration of certain ore-specific parameters. These parameters were calibrated for two different crushed gold ores en route to grinding mills in process plants. The model predictions were compared with the predictions from Gy?s original model. Far smaller masses of samples are required by the modified model than by Gy?s model at the same relative variance. The representativeness of the sampling procedure if normally distributed errors are assumed was also calculated. These procedures and evaluations lead to significant savings on cost of handling and preparation of the samples and to a quantifiable degree of confidence in the analytical results for the process plant.

Samples of four different satellite materials were prepared by either hot isostatic pressing (HIP) of the powder or tungsten inert-gas welding of rod onto a 316 L stainless-steel substrate. The samples were subjected to a series of comparative erosion corrosion tests, and generally the Hipped samples experienced between 13 and 24 per cent less loss in mass than the equivalent welded alloys. Resistance to erosion corrosion increased with increasing carbon, chromium, and tungsten contents. Metallographic studies indicated the differences in carbide content between the different satellite materials, and the differences in morphology between the Hipped and welded samples. Since then, the smelter complex has undergone considerable changes. Mineral economics, UG2 exploitation, and changing environmental legislation have enforced numerous process upgrades, yet a common-sense approach has always been adopted. This document details the major changes in the smelter complex at Mineral Processes (Minpro) over the past 15 years, and provides the rationale for the changes.

The paper reviews the results to date of an integrated research programme currently being conducted by CSIR Mining Technology, aimed at impacting significantly on concentrated mining with face advance rates of up to 20 times faster than presently achieved. Consideration is given to the interplay between innovative technologies for continuous non-explosive mining or rock comminution underground and lateral hydraulic transportation in cross cuts, haulages and eventually hydro hoisting. Novel technologies for underground comminution of reef and development waste and an innovative pumping system suitable for the hydraulic transportation of coarse comminuted rock are reviewed. Emphasis is placed on South African gold mine reef and waste samples comminuted by electric shock wave comminution technology. The innovative TORE® pump system appears to be well suited for the successful hydraulic transportation of rock, produced by electric shock wave comminution, at solids concentrations between 45 % and 67 % by mass.

Impala Platinum, the second largest platinum producer in the world, is embarking on a major expansion strategy to increase its platinum output from 1.95 moz to 2.8 moz by the year 2008. The smelter complex, situated in Rustenburg, will undergo substantial modifications, and will require a solution to the capture and treatment of the smelter off-gases and dust produced during smelting and converting operations. One of the solutions explored was an integrated approach, where all the off-gases from both the primary smelting electric furnaces and the converter operations are routed to a large central gas cleaning and double catalysis, double absorption acid plant. In-line sulphur burning, utilizing a highly flexible LURO1spin cup burner with a turn down ratio of 50%, ensures that the acid plant operates independently of operating conditions at the smelter complex.

"The Zambian Copper mining industry as we know it today has its genesis from early in the 20th century in the 1920s. Consistent private sector-driven investment in the industry over a period of over 50 years in exploration, mine development and operation, development of minerals processing facilities, building of infrastructure for pyrometallurgical and hydrometallurgical processing, with attendant support facilities, including building of whole new towns, resulted in copper production going from zero to a peak of 769 000 tons of copper in 1969. At the same time, the industry created jobs to the extent that in 1972 the industry had over 62 000 direct jobs. The industry was nationalized in 1973 and remained in government hands for just over 24 years. During this period, the industry experienced a serious decline in production levels, reaching the lowest level at the dawn of the 21st century in the year 2000 when production was 250 000 tons. In terms of jobs, an average of just under 2000 jobs were lost every year in the 24-year period, reaching just over 22 000 direct jobs in 2000. Following the return of Zambian politics to pluralism and liberalized economic policies, the government decided to privatize the mining industry. The process started in 1996 and by the year 2000 all the mining assets had been privatized. The new investors embarked on serious investment to upgrade the assets and to develop greenfield mining projects. Fourteen years later and investments of over USD 12 billion, the industry production levels increased year- on-year to reach a peak of 763 000 tons in 2013 with direct jobs reaching 90 000. This paper discusses the impact of the mining industry in Zambia on the economy in areas such as employment, support to other industries, direct contribution to the national gross domestic product (GDP), foreign exchange earnings and social amenities. The paper also focuses on the performance of the mines during these periods vis-à-vis mineral availability, mineral grades and complexity, new technologies and human capital. This is looked at particularly in the light of current challenges the industry is facing and makes suggestions on how the industry can be nurtured to continue being a major driver for the Zambian economy and a major player in the international copper mining business."

Keywords: Pyrometallurgy, furnace, Bindura, nickel The smelter at Bindura Nickel Corporation processes concentrates from its own mines and other external sources. Concentrates are dried, smelted, and converted to a desulphurised matte (leach alloy) for further processing at the refinery. The smelter comprises a drying plant, submerged arc electric furnace, electrostatic precipitator, and three Peirce-Smith type converters capable of treating 150 000 tonnes of concentrates per year. Concentrates are dried in a rotary coal-fired kiln, blended with fluxes, and smelted in a six-in-line submerged-arc 15MW electric furnace. Slag is tapped and granulated for disposal, and matte is tapped at regular intervals for blowing in Peirce-Smith converters. The paper details the 37-year history of the smelter, including furnace rebuilds and operating parameters as they have evolved in response to changing feed compositions. Special challenges, particularly relating to the treatment of high talc concentrates, are also described.

Paper written on project work carried out in partial fulfilment of MSc thesis This paper investigates the effects of thiol collectors: xanthates, dithiophosphates, dithiocarbamates and mixtures of these on the froth flotation performance obtained with a bornite-rich copper sulphide ore from Okiep Copper Mine with a feed grade of 1.8%copper. Batch flotation tests were used to assess the performance in terms of mass-water recovery, sulphur grade-recovery and copper grade-recovery relationships and the Klimpel rate constant for copper recovery. The results showed that the di-ethyl-dithiocar-bamate (di C2-DTC) was the weakest collector of copper sulphide minerals. Highest copper recoveries were obtained with the di-ethyl-dithiophosphate (di C2-DTP), which were accompanied with more watery froths and lower copper grades demonstrating frothing properties in addition to collector action. Superior copper recoveries were obtained with the 90% ethyl xanthate (C2-X):10% di-ethyl-dithiophosphate (di C2-DTP) and 90% ethyl xanthate (C2-X):10%di-ethyl-dithiocarbamate (di C2-DTC) collector mixtures compared to that obtained with ethyl xanthate at an equivalent collector dosage of 0.139 mol/ton ore (a dosage equivalent to 20 g sodium ethyl xanthate per ton ore). A superior copper grade was obtained with the 90% ethyl xanthate: 10% di-ethyl-dithiocarbamate collector mixture at a dosage of 0.0695 mol/ton ore compared to that obtained with ethyl xanthate at the same equivalent dosage. DC arc furnaces are widely used for steel scrap melting, and are increasingly being used for smelting applications as well. The electrical resistivity of slags varies widely, from highly conductive slags in ilmenite smelting, to highly resistive slags in applications such as cobalt recovery from non-ferrous slags, and nickel laterite smelting. Models have been developed to predict the electrical behaviour of the DC open plasma arc and the molten slag bath. These models allow the voltage and current ranges of furnace power supplies to be specified.

Underground excavations exhibit different hangingwall conditions in response to varying geotechnical and mining situations. These differences need to be quantified so as to accurately determine the effectiveness of the mining and/or support strategies. A useful tool for the quantification of these differences is hangingwall profiling. Two methods of hangingwall profile measurement are described?termed irregular and periodic methods. Several data analysis techniques are reviewed for these methods and the suitable ones are discussed in detail. For irregular data the suitable techniques are the determination of the length, the average of the profile and the average absolute deviation from the mean of the profile. All of these techniques as well as determination of the moving average of the height and examination of the spectral image of the profile can be successfully applied to regular data. The effect of preconditioning on the hangingwall is discussed as an example and it is quantitatively shown that it results in improvements of conditions. The techniques described allow the engineer to quantitatively identify the appropriate support type or mining strategy and thus represent a valuable decision-making tool. It is suggested that these techniques should be employed on a routine basis by the rock engineers on the mines as part of their geotechnical classification, as well as support manufacturers to quantify the effectiveness of various support types.

Coal has been at the forefront of mankind?s drive to improve his quality of life and also for sustainable development, from the Industrial Revolution onwards. The international coal industry today is large, with some 3,7 billion tons being produced and consumed in 1997. South Africa is an important participant in the coal industry, selling some 220 million tons in 1997 of which 64 million tons were exported. It is the second-largest thermal coal exporting country in the world. Despite the size of the world coal industry, it is not immune to change. The address examines growth projections for the industry and the change drivers that will impact on it in the future. Environmental pressures, the most important of which being the climate change debate, the Kyoto Protocol arising from this debate and the development of clean coal technologies, to reduce the impact of coal production and usage on the environment are considered. Other major change drivers considered are competition from other sources of energy and that between coal producers, the deregulation of the electric power industry, corporate restructuring and for the South African producer, legislative reform. The declining (real term) coal price, the consequent squeeze on margins and the need for producers to actively contain costs is covered. Technology has, in the past, been the driver behind the growth and change of the South African coal industry and its future role in ensuring that coal is the fuel of choice for continued improvement in standards of living and economic development is addressed.

The Ashanti mine is located within the Lower Proterozoic Birimian of Ghana, and covers a concession of 474 square kilometres at its Obuasi operations which comprise large scale underground, surface and tailings treatment facilities. The mine had operated for a century at the end of 1997 and had produced nearly 25 million ounces of gold, a significant proportion of which came from the underground operations. This paper covers the strategy under which exploration for both surface and underground mineral resources was instrumental in enabling the expansion programme to go ahead together with the methodologies and results that have developed in the exploration area over the last five years. Within capital expenditure constraints, the objective on surface is to replace oxide depletion with a secondary objective of discovering new sulphides in areas other than the main trend. In the underground, the exploration strategy is directed at replacement of both underground and surface sulphide depletion, minimising finding costs and assisting the development of long lead time infrastructure. The exploration application describes the methodologies in use for both surface and underground exploration that have been developed in recent years in conjunction with a description of a major review conducted in 1995/96 of the exploration database using an integrated approach, geochemistry, geophysics, remote sensing and structural geology. A revisit of soil geochemical data in particular, and modification of exploration methodology led to the success in finding relatively significant new oxides in 1997.

The Faculty of Engineering at the University of New South Wales (UNSW) offers a core first-year engineering design and innovation course, ENGG1000, undertaken during the first and second semesters. This course is highly regarded in the sense that it provides an introduction to many concepts and activities that students will experience over the four-year minimum for which they are undergraduates at UNSW. Approximately 1400 students enrol in the semester 1 course across the Faculty, typically 80 of which undertake the Mining Engineering stream. Students in teams of between six and eight design and construct a physical model to represent an aspect of their chosen discipline. For example, in 2013 the mining engineers designed and built a model dragline. This paper concentrates a major aspect of the course ? the involvement of team members in group activities and the development of the associated skills of peer assessment and peer review as the course progresses over a period of 12 weeks. The term ?peer assessment? in this paper refers to the requirement for students to assess the design components of their peers. This course has a structured requirement in terms of how a successful design is a result of a sound design process rather than a ?try and see? approach. Each student must describe in detail the process they undertook to achieve their final design ? hence the approach is independent of the discipline and/or project selected. Peer review is a process whereby students review the contribution of their team members to the overall design. This activity encourages team involvement and interaction. The final assessment mark can be moderated by the outcome of this peer review, although it is run twice during the semester. The first ?run? is for feedback only during week six and hence no moderation is undertaken. It was found through consultation with students and from questionnaires that both processes are well accepted and highly regarded by students, as they give them a degree of ownership of the assessment process. In addition, the processes provide rapid and relevant feedback on the progress of individual students. Peer review and peer assessment are also considered to be very valuable tools for use in courses in succeeding years. For instance, many of the courses in mining engineering rely heavily on group assessment tasks.

The Mining Division of Iscor, an integrated minerals and metals company, has recently completed a feasibility study for the establishment of a new heavy minerals mine and smelter in the Richards Bay area of KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. The mine will produce a heavy mineral concentrate containing ilmenite, zircon, rutile and leucoxene which will be beneficiated at a central processing complex close to Empangeni. The ilmenite will be smelted to produce high-grade titania slag and pig iron for export. The ancient dune containing the mineral deposit is located some distance inland of the coastal dunes, and the sands contain a high proportion of extremely fine material which must be extracted ahead of the gravity separation process. Of the 56 million tonnes to be mined annually over the ten-year life of the mine approximately 23,4%?a total of 13,1 million tonnes of minus 45 micron residue fines?will have to be disposed of in a containment facility. The origin of the fine material is from the weathering of amphibole minerals. The remaining coarse sands will be returned to the mined area to re-create the original dune configuration. A number of options for the disposal of the residue fines have been examined and specialised laboratory tests undertaken to determine the deposition behaviour of the fines. The final solution involved the use of a ?sub-aerial? technique for deposition of fine material in a disposal facility. The resulting arrangement will adequately meet technical and environmental criteria. Upon closure after 10 years of operation, the surface of the disposal facility will be returned to sugar cane cultivation The paper refers to the various options considered and describes the problems associated with competent disposal of the residue fines and the development details of the final disposal facility.

This paper summarises the strategy for selection between a two module coal plant incorporating large, but less equipment, and a three module coal plant with more but smaller equipment. The two options were evaluated in terms of three main categories: ? Size ? size of the equipment and the effect on the process efficiency as well as the difference in physical dimensions of the plant to accommodate the larger equipment; ? Cost ? capital savings between a two and a three module plant, processing the same ROM (run-of-mine) tons per hour (t/hr); and ? Practicality ? in terms of constructability of the plant, safety of using larger equipment and maintainability of the equipment. Decisions that were taken to reduce the risk associated with size, cost and practicality on the chosen option of a two module plant will be highlighted.

The use of differences in specific gravity between minerals to separate them has long been utilized in the extractive industries. The environmental and cost benefits of the commercialized forms of these processes are well understood and widely used. Gravity concentration is used inter alia in the primary beneficiation of gold, diamonds, coal, tin, ferrous metal ores and andalusite. The potential for economic loss due to poor performance of these gravity processes is significant, but diverse in manifestation and regular process monitoring can prevent or at least reduce these losses. The measurement of performance of gravity processes has always presented a challenge, due primarily to the masses of material involved and the physical nature of the processes, generally typified by long reporting time, and hazardous materials (such as Tetrabromoethane) for float and sink type tests. The development of density tracers has improved this situation, however recovery of these tracers from the process streams created the next set of challenges, requiring significant manpower to physically remove tracers from product dewatering screens. Additions to these tracers (magnetic or x-ray fluorescent) eased the recovery mechanism issues but made them much more expensive to produce, hence operators became concerned about losses during process testing. In addition, magnetic recovery of smaller size tracers by a magnet suspended above a loaded screen panel is still problematic. The development of new low cost magnetic tracers has improved statistical significance of tracer tests, as the tracers themselves can be bought and used in much larger quantities, whilst still remaining economically viable. Coupled with the development of effective magnetic recovery technology, such as the Gekko MagScreen, for even fine sized tracers, on-line, continuous tracer testing is now becoming a reality. Whilst the development of high technology radio frequency detection tracer systems continues, enabling the real time measurement of the process and interpretation of results, miniaturization and recovery of these tracers, which is critical given their costs at present, remains an issue. We present a novel hybrid algorithm for quantifying the ore grade variability that has central importance in ore reserve estimation. The proposed algorithm has three stages: (1) fuzzy clustering, (2) similarity measure, and (3) grade estimation. The method first considers data clustering, and then uses the clustering information for quantifying the ore grades by means of a cumulative point semimadogram function. The method provides a measure of similarity and gives an indication of the regional heterogeneity. In addition, grade estimations can be obtained at different levels of similarity using a weighting function, which is the standard regional dependence function (SRDF). The effect of flotation operational parameters on froth stability and froth recovery was studied. Froth stability was measured using a special column. To determine the froth recovery, the froth height change model and froth height exponential model were used. It was found that since the interactions between the pulp and froth zones affect the time of froth formation, the exponential model is more suitable than the froth height change method for determining the froth recovery. The results showed that superficial air velocity and collector dosage have, respectively, the highest and lowest effect on the froth recovery, while froth recovery decreases sharply with increasing froth height.

This paper reviews how uncertainty has been dealt with over the past 40 years using the decision making cycle as a frame of reference. The review of the phases of this cycle, as applied to rockmechanics and rock engineering, namely characterization, performance analysis, updating and decision making shows that in each, progress has been made over the past 40 years, although most of the basic concepts existed already in the 1960’s. Characterization is the area in which the greatest scientific steps were taken, this phase and performance analysis also gained from the tremendously expanded computational capabilities which allow one to use both more complex and more practically oriented models. The greatest practical advance is without using any doubt in risk based decision making although its acceptance shows interesting differences between different professions. Dans l’article suivant on utilise le cycle de décision pour illustrer le développement du traitement des incertitudes en mécanique des roches et en construction en roche dans les quarante années passées. La revue des phases du cycle de décision montre qu’on a fait du progrès dans chaque phase du cycle de décision, c’est à dire dans la caractérisation, dans l’analyse et la prédiction du comportement, dans l’actualisation et dans l’acte de décision, même si les concepts fondamentaux existaient déjà dans les années 1960. Les plus grands avancements scientifiques se trouvent dans le domaine de la caractérisation tandis que l’analyse prédictive profitait du développement de l’informatique qui a mené à des modèles plus complexes mais aussi plus pratiques. Le plus grand progrès est sans doute dans le domaine de l’acte de décision sur la base des risques. Ce procédé est devenu assez commun même s’il y a encore des différences d’acceptation entre différentes professions. Im vorliegenden Artikel wird der Entscheidungszyklus gebraucht, um darzustellen wie sich derUmgang mit Unsicherheiten im Felsbau während der letzen 40 Jahre entwickelt hat. DerÜberblick über die Phasen des Entscheidungsprozesses zeigt, dass bei der Anwendung in derFelsmechanik und im Felsbau, in allen Phasen d.h. bei der Charakterisierung, bei der analytischenVorhersage, beim Aktualisieren und bei der Entscheidungsfindung Fortschritte gemacht wurden,obwohl die grundlegenden Konzepte bereits in den 1960er Jahren existierten. Im Gebiet derCharakterisierung gab es wohl die grössten wissenschaftlichen Entwicklungen, während dieanalytische Vorhersage vor allem von den Fortschritten der Informatik profitierte, welchekomplexere wie auch praktischere Modelle möglich machte. Der grösste Fortschritt ist ganz sicherin der Entscheidungsfindung zu beobachten, wo Risikobetrachtungen gang und gäbe sind, obwohlhier noch einige Unterschiede zwischen verschiedenen Berufsgattungen zu finden sind.
