The following notes have been compiled to assist authors in the preparation of papers for presentation to the Institute and for publication in the Journal. STANDARDS FOR ACCEPTANCE To merit consideration papers should be of sufficient high standard and contain matter that is new, interpretations that are novel or of new significance and conclusions that cast a fresh light on old ideas. Their publication should be of real interest to technical men and of benefit to mining and industry. Authors must realize that because a mine shaft is new or the mine itself is newly established, this in itself does not justify a paper unless significantly new techniques or processes were involved in the opening-up procedure. A few well selected diagrams and illustrations are often more pertinent than an amorphous mass of less well chosen material. Over-statement and dogmatism are jarring and have no place in technical writing. The amount of textbook material included in a contribution should be the minimum essential to the argument. The length of a paper is not the criterion of its worth and it should be as brief and concise as possible, consistent with the lucid presentation of the subject. Avoid the use of the first person, be objective and do not include irrelevant or extraneous matter. Papers should be submitted at least three months prior to the intended date of presentation. The text should be typewritten, double-spaced, on one side only of foolscap paper, leaving a left-hand margin of 11/2 inches, and should be submitted in duplicate to facilitate the work of the referees and editors. Galley proofs are sent to the authors for the correction of printers' errors and not for the purpose of making alterations and additions which may be expensive. Should an author make alterations which are considered excessive, he may be required to pay for them. Quotation marks should be of the 'single' type for quotations and "double" for quoted matter within quotations. Interpretations in the text should be marked off by parenthesis ( ), whereas brackets [ ] are employed to enclose explanatory matter in the text. Words to be printed in italics should be underlined singly. For small capitals they are to be underlined DOUBLY and for large capitals TREBLY. Abbreviations and symbols are laid down in British Standard 1991 and proof correction symbols in British Standard 1219c. Abbreviations are the same for the singular and plural, e.g. ft for foot and feet, lb for pound and pounds. Percentages are written in the text as per cent; the symbol % is restricted to tables. Likewise ft and in. should be used, x' y" only being permissible in diagrams and plans. Drawings and diagrams are to be in black India ink and should be about 6 in. wide. Numbering of tables should be in Roman numerals: 1, 11, etc. and figures in Arabic numerals: Fig. 1, Fig. 2, etc. Photographs should be black and white glossy prints. As a guide to the printer the author should indicate by means of notes in the margin of the typescript where drawings and diagrams, etc. are to appear in the text. When submitting graphical representations avoid a fine grid if possible. Curves should be in heavy line to stand out. Lettering too should be bold as a reduction in size is often involved in the printing process. SUMMARY ABSTRACT OR SYNOPSIS It is most important that the summary should provide a clear outline of the contents of the paper, the results obtained and the author's conclusions. It should be written concisely and in normal rather than abbreviated English and should not exceed 250 words. While the emphasis is on brevity this should not be laboured to the extent of leaving out important matter or impairing intelligibility. Summaries simplify the task of abstractors and therefore should present a balanced and complete picture. It is preferable to use standard rather than proprietary terms. FOOTNOTES AND REFERENCES Footnotes should be resorted to only when they are indispensable. In the typescript they should appear immediately below the line to which they refer and not at the foot of the page. References should be indicated by super-script, thus . . .1 . . . 2. Theoretical flotation models suggest that there is a positive relationship between bubble-particle collision rates and turbulent kinetic energy dissipation. Fine particle flotation performance is generally enhanced by increased collision frequency and hence higher energy dissipation. Contrarily, increased turbulence in the rotor-stator region is related to higher detachment frequency of the coarser size range. Therefore, the optimal modes of recovery for the ?fine? and ?coarse? size classes appear to be diametrically opposed. Industrial applications have previously confirmed that applying greater power to flotation slurries yields significant improvements in fine particle recovery. However, recovery of the coarser size class favours a different flotation environment. An improvement in the flotation kinetics of the fine and coarse size classes, provided there is no adverse metallurgical influence on the intermediate size ranges, is obviously beneficial to the overall recovery response. Managing the local turbulent kinetic energy dissipation, and hence the power imparted to the slurry, offers the benefit of targeting the particle size ranges exhibiting slower kinetics. FLSmidth recently introduced the practical implementation of this concept. In principle, it decouples flotation regimes where fine and coarse particles exhibit preferentially recovery. In the case of naturally aspirated machines (Wemco®), it is referred to as Hybrid Energy Flotation? and incorporates at least three phases: ? Standard flotation machines (standard energy input, rotor speed (r/min), rotor size/type) at the beginning of the row, where flotation is typically froth-phase limited and operational and set-up parameters have a limited influence on the recovery ? Higher-powered flotation machines (high rotor speed, high-power rotor size/type) at the end of the row to improve fine particle recovery ? Lower-powered flotation machines (low rotor speed, low power rotor size/type) to enhance coarse particle recovery. A CFD-based flotation model is used to highlight the effect of turbulent dissipation energy on attachment and detachment rates. Preferential collection zones for ?fine? and ?coarse? particles are predicted for both forced-air and naturally aspirated machines. The greater predominance of UG2 ore types, coupled with the skewed feed distribution of platinum group metals (PGMs) to the finer size fractions, suggests that PGM flotation circuits are not designed for optimal recovery across the size distribution. The application of the hybrid energy concept to PGM flotation offers a possible shift towards a more efficient flotation circuit solution through a managed distribution of energy.

The industrial application of a dioxide electrode uranium by C. R. S. NEEDES, Ph.D. (London) (Visitor), M. J. NICOL, Ph.D. (Rand) (Visitor), N. P. FINKELSTEIN M.Sc. (Rhodes), Ph.D. (Liverpool) (Fellow), and G. T. W. ORMROD (Visitor) A correlation between the potential of a U02 electrode and the rate of recovery of uranium has been proved in laboratory and plant trials. When the recovery rates change because of variation in the concentrations of Fe(III), Fe(II), SO4 'and H+, a positive correlation is observed. However, an 2- increase in the concentration of phosphate in solution produces an increase in the U02 electrode potential but a decrease in the rate of leaching of U02. The correlation between the U02 electrode potential and the rate of leaching of U02 is then negative. It is concluded that, as a control device, the electrode cannot compete with the platinum electrode for use on certain plants. Nevertheless, the U02 electrode will act as a useful warning device if the total concentration of iron in solution decreases to below a level concomitant with the economic recovery of uranium. Furthermore, because of the positive correlation between the U02 electrode potential and the phosphte concentration, the electrode will also be of value in the detection of an increase in the phosphate level in solution. When it was incorporated in a suitable industrial probe, the electrode was found to be able to withstand the rigours of the leaching conditions in a large pilot-plant pachuca, and only failed after six weeks' operation.

"A method of optimizing the design of a processing plant has been developed which minimizes capital and operating costs for average stripping ratios and ore characteristics. Models were developed to describe the operating characteristics and costs involved in various operations such as up-grading, leaching and solid-liquid separation.The options available in up-grading policy and the relation between the cut-off grade and the costs incurred subsequently in the treatment of the ore formed the basis of the optimization. To arrive at an optimum plant configuration and a set of operating parameters, the interrelation between grinding size, leaching temperature, leaching time, and various plant recycle options was investigated."

This paper investigated the ability of eight common hydrodynamic models – tanks in series (TIS); three compartmental model configurations (Comp-1, Comp-2 and Comp-3); advection dispersion (AD); piston exchange (PE); piston exchange-diffusion variant (PE-D) and piston dispersion exchange (PDE) – to simulate residence time distribution (RTD) data generated from tracer tests conducted on a packed bed composed of different size fractions of malachite ore. The chosen materials were packed into 0.1 m internal diameter columns to a depth of 0.155 m and drip irrigated at 5.11 L/ m2.h. The four size fractions tested were: 1 – 2 mm, 2 – 2.8 mm, 4.75 – 5.6 mm and 13.6 – 16 mm. Step-up tracer tests were conducted using potassium chloride. The results showed that an increase in the particle size of the malachite ore had little effect on overall bed porosity but resulted in significantly lower values of liquid holdup. Two of the monoporosity models tested, TIS and Comp-2, were the most affected by the changes in bed size fraction due to their inherent inability to cope with high degrees of non-ideal flow present in the larger particle systems. The dual porosity models performed relatively better with the dominant trend being a reduction in dynamic to total liquid holdup as particle size increased. Of all the models tested, the PDE and TIS models were the best and worst performers respectively, with R2 values averaging at 0.997 and 0.679 across all experiments respectively. Though the Comp-1, Comp-3 and PE-D models also performed well, the addition of the dispersion coefficient to take the axial spread of fluid molecules into account added a layer of complexity that allowed the PDE model to perform relatively better than the other dual porosity models. Papers on research should contain matter that is new, interpretations that are novel or of new significance and conclusions that cast a fresh light on old ideas. Descriptive papers should not be a repetition of well-known practices or ideas but should incorporate developments which would be of real interest to technical men and of benefit to the mining and metallurgical Industry. In some cases a well prepared review paper can be of value, and will be considered for publication. All papers and particularly research papers, no matter how technical the subject, should be written with the average reader of the Journal in mind, to ensure wide interest. The amount of textbook material included in a contribution should be the minimum essential to the argument. The length of a paper is not the criterion of its worth and it should be as brief and concise as possible, consistent with the lucid presentation of the subject. Only in very exceptional circumstances should a paper exceed 15 pages of the Journal (15 000 words, if there are no tables or diagrams). Six to ten pages is more normal. NOTE: Papers in the Journal are printed in 10 point type, which is larger than the 8 point type used on this page. For special publication Council may decide on page sizes smaller than A4 used for this Journal. In a benchmarking paper published in the SAIMM Journal, Potvin and Hadjigeorgiou (2008) reviewed ground control strategies to manage large deformations in underground hard rock mines. Significant differences were identified in the design and acceptable tolerance between civil and mining engineering practice for squeezing ground conditions. Variations were also noted in ground support strategies between Australian and Canadian mines. In this paper we review progress in design methodology and ground support practice since 2008, including the availability of more effective deformation monitoring, new design tools, greater access to yielding ground support elements, and better installation practices. An improved understanding of technical and practical issues associated with squeezing conditions has led to the development of ground support guidelines for a range of squeezing ground conditions in hard rock mines.

The plants integrated in the PhosAgro group of companies perform processes from scientific research to the project, from ore mining to shipment of fertilisers and feed additives to consumers. An extensive process chain maintains smooth interaction at all stages from research to production. As an example, the paper shows the revamp of two beneficiation plants (ANOF-2 and ANOF-3), requiring a comprehensive approach to task solving. The intention of the revamp was to increase the total yield of apatite and nepheline concentrate, taking into account the gradual decline in the quality of ore being processed and ensuring the yield stability of final products during re-equipment of the plants. At ANOF-3, the crushing and grinding cycle was modernised, the production of nepheline concentrate was implemented, and the capacity of apatite flotation, dehydration, and drying was increased. At ANOF-2 a new process chain was implemented for the production of apatite concentrate in workshops previously used for the production of nepheline concentrate. The main building was withdrawn from operation, where ore grinding, apatite flotation and apatite concentrate thickening had been carried out. The total increase in apatite concentrate yield at two beneficiation plants was 1.3 times. A further increase in concentrate production is planned. "The favorable mining conditions in the United States of America that resulted in the development of the highly productive room and pillar systems are largely disappearing. Increasing mechanization, poorer natural conditions, and greater concern for health, safety and environment gave impetus to the enactment of the Federal Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969. These regulations prescribe more stringent requirements in face ventilation and mine air distribution, necessitating significant changes in existing ventilation systems. Stringent mandatory standards were applied to respirable dust control for the first time, and simultaneous control of both gas and dust has affected the face as well as primary distribution, most notably on haulage entries.The size and complexity of the present-day mining operations, and the need to evaluate various system changes in a limited time, call for scientific methods in mine planning. In this paper, the authors trace the previous applications of computers to mine ventilation planning and discuss the results of their work in applying a ventilation simulator developed at Penn State. The paper includes an analysis of current trends and suggestions for future research and development."

A decision by joint-venture partners Anglo American, Gencor, and the Industrial Development Corporation to proceed with the expansion of the Columbus Stainless Steel plant in Middelburg will contribute significantly towards the economic growth that South Africa needs so desperately. The expanded facility, expected to come on-line in 1995, will be the largest single-plant producer of stainless steel in the world, and the company will rank sixth overall in world production.

Most mine safety initiatives in South Africa are doomed to limited success because of one simple fact: they are a-historical and un-cultural and do not deal with the serious ?legacy issues? that still negatively impact on safety, production, and relationships. We in the SA mining industry continually use imported, foreign safety concepts and systems that will not work fully in a South African context. ?The 4th Wave: Culture-Based Behavioural Safety?, as developed by Lance Bloch, an international award-winning clinical psychologist with 12 years? experience in the mining industry - focused mostly on Platinum - is making waves. He has been very successful in creating people-centred, empowered, high-performance safety cultures wherever he has worked. Not only does the 4th Wave transform the corporate culture of a mine, improving safety and production and building an environment of Ubuntu, but it also uses people?s cultures as a means of winning hearts and minds in the battle for safe production. Powerful relationships are built through engagement at all levels, leading to all being focused on the best needs of the company and its constituents as a whole. The programmes are no less than nation-building - something most necessary in the industry, with the pressures from community, unions, the DMR, and politicians. This presentation will describe and discuss the 4th Wave as an advance on previous safety technology and programmes, as particularly relevant to platinum mining in South Africa today.

A progressive karst formation and its influence upon engineered structures in the ‘phil-karst’ rock mass draw a tunnel engineer’s special attention to a long-term stability and the maintenance issues. Karst sinkholes of any size beneath the railway bed cause train wrecks or long interruptions in train traffic during rehabilitation work. The collapse of cave roof, called a ‘doline’, is in general connected to the cave by the gradual dissolving of the rock, developing into subsidence and sink-holes. The principal conclusions obtained from the field experiments are as follows: It is found that the development of karst cavity shows a relationship with a structural geological line and it is necessary to define the dominant directions of joint and geological layer (formation). The relation-ship between the water flow and joint direction can be used as an indicator of cavity presence in their direction. In addition the direction of in-situ stress can play a role in the development of karst cavities. A risk map of karst scenario is produced for the tunnel supporting systems with rock type classifications in water-soluble karstic rock mass. Eine fortschrittliche Karst-Formung und sein Einfluß auf angelegten Strukturen in der Phil-Karst-Felsenmasse wecken einem Tunnelingenieur eine besondere Aufmerksamkeit zu einer langfristigen Stabilität und der Wartungsausgaben auf. Karstensinkhöhlen in irgendeinen Größen unter dem Eisenbahnbett sind die Ursache der Zugeszerstörung oder der langen Unterbrechungen in Zugverkehr während Rehabilitationsarbeit. Der Zusammenbruch von Höhlendach, d.h. ein “doline”, ist im allgemeinen an die Höhle, die durch das allmähliche Auflösen des Felsen zu entstehen ist und sich in die Subsidence und Sinkhöhlen entwickeln, angeschlossen. Die Hauptschlüsse, die von Feldenprüfungen erhalten wurden, sind folgendermaßen: es wird gefunden, daß die Entwicklung von Karstenhöhlung eine Beziehung mit einer strukturellen geologischen Linie zeigt und es notwendig ist, die vorherrschenden Richtungen von Gelenk und geologischer Schicht (die Formung) zu definieren. Die Beziehung zwischen dem Wasserablauf und der gemeinschaftlichen Richtung kann als ein Anzeiger von Höhlungsanwesenheit in ihrer Richtung benutzt werden. Zusätzlich kann die Richtung von In-Situ-Spannung eine Rolle in der Entwicklung der Karstenhöhlungen spielen. Für das Tunnelunterstützungssystem, welches mit Felsentypenklassifizierungen in wasserlöslicher Karstic-Felsenmasse, ist eine Risikokarte von Karstenszenar hergestellt. Une formation progressive de karst et son influence sur les structures tracées dans la masse de roche "phil-karst" retiennent l'attention particulière des ingénieurs de tunnel aux problèmes de la stabilité à long terme et du maintien. Les creux de karst de toute la taille sous le chemin de fer causent les accidents de trains ou de longues interruptions pendant le travail de réhabilitaion. L'effondrement du plafond de caverne qui s'appelle "doline" s'est, en général, connecté à la caverne par dissolution progressive de la roche, en devenant l'affaissement et les creux. Les conclusions importantes venant des experimentations sur le terrain sont suivants: d'abord, le développement de la cavité de karst montre le rapport avec la ligne géologique de la structure et il est nécessaire de définir les directions dominantes du joint et la couche(formation) géologique. La relation entre l'écoulement de l'eau et la direction du joint peut être utilisé comme un indicateur de la présence de la cavité dans leur direction. De plus, la direction sur place peut contribuer au développement des cavités de karst. Le plan risqué de karst s'est produit pour le système d'appui du tunnel avec les classifications du type de roche dans la masse de roche karstique qui est soluble dans l'eau.

(Visitor) The levels of serum vitamin C in the blood of mineworkers were determined on the first and fifth days of the normal heat-acclimatization period (i.e., before and after exposure to heat) and again after I, 2, and 4 months of underground employment. Supplementary vitamin C was administered to the men during the heat-acclimatization period. Six groups of 20 men featured in the study and, except for one of the two 4-month groups, all the values were obtained after a full shift of underground work. It was found that adequate levels of serum vitamin C were maintained during the heat-acclimatization period, and the 250 mg of vitamin C given daily to each man must therefore be regarded as sufficient. The serum vitamin C decreased significantly with time of exposure to underground conditions, showing that the vitamin C utilized during heat stress is more than that provided in the men's diet. At the end of 4 months, not a single subject had more than 0,4 mg of serum vitamin C per 100 ml, most of them having only 0,3 mg per 100 ml; 90 per cent of the men had had more than 0,4 mg per 100 ml during the acclimatization period. It is therefore recommended that the mineworkers' diets should be supplemented with 100 to 200 mg of vitamin C per man per day.

There are factors distinct from the mode of mechanical extraction that may have considerable influence on its prospects for extensive adoption; the rockburst factor is one of these. REPLY BY H.H. HAASE AND R.G.B PICKERING We agree with Professor O'Connor that, in conventional gold-mining operations, a disproportionate number of seismic events occur in the period immediately following a blast; rockburst activity follows the same pattern, and it has been calculated that, if the rockburst peak were spread evenly across the day, the rockburst exposure of stope workers would nearly double.

In light of soaring commodity prices, Nkomati has investigated the potential of processing additional low grade nickel ores to add to their reserves. The Chromititic Peridotite Mineralised Zone (PCMZ) was identified as one ore type with the potential of producing a high grade nickel concentrate. In addition to the nickel, copper, cobalt and PGM?s, the ore also contains a significant amount of chromite which adds substantial value to the project. Pyrrhotite, pentlandite, chalcopyrite and chromite are the dominant minerals within the ore, which on average grades around 0.23% Ni and 12% Cr2O3. The PCMZ ore contains excessive amounts of fibrous silicates which makes it a challenging float, with gangue control as the key element to success. Extensive laboratory testwork, which eventually led to a pilot plant campaign, was undertaken with the aim of developing a process route for treating the PCMZ ore. Several flotation circuit configurations were tested and results from the optimal circuit indicated that a nickel concentrate grading at 8.5% is achievable at a recovery of 78%, with substantial recoveries for the copper, cobalt and PGM co-products. The chromite concentrate, grading at 45%, was extracted from the flotation rougher tailings via a spiral plant. These promising results were incorporated into the plant design and are currently being evaluated in a bankable feasibility study, which will see the current 100ktpm MMZ concentrator being upgraded to a 250ktpm PCMZ concentrator as part of Nkomati?s Phase II expansion.

A detailed fundamental model of a zinc electrowinning cell has been developed and validated for both steady state and dynamic simulations. This model was used to investigate the effects of a range of operating variables and to find their optimum values. As well as providing useful design information for a planned upgrading of the EZ refinery, more generally it demonstrates the potential benefits to the minerals industry of the applications of modern CAD flowsheeting techniques. The SPEEDUP equation oriented CAD package was found most suitable for this task as the user can easily generate models specific to his site with any number of components and mixture properties.

Pseudomonas spp was isolated from mine water and tailings samples collected from mining effluents and mine dumps in the Gauteng and Northern provinces of South Africa respectively. Adsorption properties of Pseudomonas spp were then tested for the removal of Cu and Co initially from their synthetic sulphate solutions, subsequently from effluents derived from metallurgical operations. The effects of experimental conditions such as pH, temperature, time, volume and metal concentration on the efficiency of the biosorption process were studied. Absorption of 45% Cu (pH 6, 37°C, 24 hours) and 40% Co (pH 6, 37°C, 24 hours) was observed from solutions with low concentrations (0.07 M). A maximum of 73% and 65% of Cu and Corespectively were recovered from the mine water samples derived from effluents.
