Sperrylite (PtAs₂) comprises about 21% of the platinum group minerals (PGMs) in the Platreef ore and regularly reports to the tailings due to its poor floatability. Hence, improving its recovery will be of great economic value to the South African PGM industry. The reasons for its poor floatability are not yet clear. This paper seeks to understand the interactions occurring between PtAs₂ and common thiol collectors, viz. potassium normal butyl xanthate (PNBX), sodium normal dibutyl dithiophosphate (SNBDTP) and sodium normal mono butyl dithiocarbamate (SNBDTC). By understanding its interactions with these collectors, it is hypothesised that it will be possible to suggest ligands that may help improve the floatability of sperrylite. Mineral-collector interactions were studied by determining the molar energy of interaction using isothermal titration calorimetry and electrochemical techniques. The hydrophobicity of the mineral before and after adsorption of the collectors was determined by heat of immersion and its flotation response determined by microflotation tests. Microflotation tests using synthetic sperrylite at pH 9 showed low collectorless recovery of 34.8% and after adding the equivalent of one pseudo-monolayer of the PNBX collector, the recovery of 32.5% was obtained. Moreover, the addition of up to three pseudo-monolayers coverage of PNBX did not result in any increase in flotation recovery. A small recovery improvement was noted when synthetic plant water with the ionic strength of 0.0484 mol/L was used, but this did not hold for all collectors, with SNBDTP exhibiting higher recoveries in distilled water. Copper sulfide minerals generally have high floatability, but their floatability decreases when surfaces are oxidised under some conditions. Sodium hydrosulfide, NaHS, is known both as an activator and as a depressant for copper minerals. NaHS at low concentrations activates copper oxides by sulfurising surfaces, but at high concentrations depresses copper sulfides by interfering with the adsorption of collectors. In this paper, we applied NaHS to activate oxidised chalcocite and bornite and focused on the conditions of NaHS treatments such as dosages and pH, and the effect of these conditions on the floatability of those minerals. The pure minerals treated with NaHS were analysed using zeta potential analyser and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Analyses indicated that the reactions of NaHS and the products on the mineral surfaces after the reactions (i.e. oxidation, pH change) depended on whether NaHS reacted with copper or iron, and the reactions between NaHS and iron depend on NaHS concentration and pH. Flotation tests using a small column cell were performed with a single pure mineral, and using a Denver-type flotation machine with a copper sulfide ore. The results of each flotation test were utilised to clarify the floatability. The relation between flotation behaviours and analysis results were also discussed. With the continuous increase in ore mineralogical complexity coupled with decreasing head grades, there is a need for mining industries to process large tonnages of material to meet global metal demands. Smarter, cheaper techniques are required to better map ore mineralogical variations proceeding to pre-concentration (flotation) stages for higher performance and metal recoveries. This paper is aimed at briefly reviewing previous studies on different selected ore mineralogy, with the focus on their pulp chemistry, to identify relationships which aid quicker flotation feed variation monitoring. Very little published work exists linking pulp chemistry parameters to flotation feed mineralogical variation. A successful application implies maximising grades at higher metal recoveries and reducing the cost of reagent for a better performing flotation circuit. The production of precipitated silica in the United States is about 145,000 tons of SiO2 and its prices vary significantly (from $ 1 to $ 4.5 per kg) depending on the area of its application. One of the most important parameters is its specific surface characterising dispersion (particle size and shape, presence or absence of pores), at a certain value of which the material acquires new properties and quality. At present, a technology has been developed for processing slag from phosphorus production to produce precipitated silica (‘white soot’) with a high specific surface and the possibility of extracting valuable components such as rare-earth metals (REMs) into a product enriched with them has been shown. However, the content of impurities in the deposited silicon dioxide, such as aluminum and iron, is above acceptable limits and may affect the quality of the final products. Therefore, along with the structure and specific surface, a very important characteristic of ‘white soot’ is the chemical purity of the material. In turn, calcium oxide occupies a significant share in the concentrate of rare-earth metals, which affects the content of ΣREMs oxides, which does not exceed 17.3 %. The low content of a valuable component may affect the feasibility of further processing. For the most complete utilisation of phosphorus slag, the authors propose a method for their acid processing, which allows for minimising the conversion of impurities to finely divided silica and collective concentrate, which will improve the quality of these products. "Sublevel caving in Malmberget mine results in mining-induced surface deformation. One of the currently mined orebodies is the Printzsköld orebody. As mining deepens there is need to assess the behaviour of the cave formed in the subsurface above this orebody. Numerical analysis was used to assess the effects of extraction to deeper levels and perform strength parametric studies. Stress redistribution was studied, and the results showed high stress buildups in the hangingwall and the crown pillar. Two failure mechanisms have been identified – shear and tensile. Reducing cohesion by 50% increased the area of the yielded zone by more than 100% in the hangingwall.IntroductionThe Malmberget mine is owned and operated by the Luossavaara-Kiirunavaara AB (LKAB) mining company. Iron ore is extracted by large-scale sublevel caving. The mine comprises a total of 20 orebodies, about 10 of which are in production today (Figure 1). The mine is located in the municipality of Gallivare, about 100 km north of the Arctic Circle (Figure 2).Successful sublevel caving requires progressive caving of the orebody after initial blasting. This results in caving of the hangingwall, sometimes all the way to surface, resulting in surface deformation. As mining progresses to deeper levels a larger area is affected by deformation. Over the years, extraction from the Malmberget orebodies has led to deformation of the ground surface, affecting residential areas and existing infrastructure.Forecasting the caving process is not straightforward as it can be rapid or slow, depending on the rock mass conditions, stress conditions, the failure mechanisms at work, etc. Moreover, several of the orebodies in Malmberget are non-daylighting, which makes reliable caving analysis even more difficult, primarily since there is less available experience from such cases. Spain is a major producer of dimension stone, which is one of the most important industrial sectors in the northwest of Spain. This justifies the maintenance of these industries, although the technical and environmental requirements for their continuity are increasingly demanding. The main target of this paper is to present a new methodology in order to obtain k-ratio stress values on the basis of flat jack measurements and finite element numerical back- analysis with Rocscience© RS2 software. Continuous iterations were performed to try to find a relationship between the k₀ and the measured stress in the tunnel roof and sidewalls. It focuses on technical aspects of the method for designing mine chambers in the slate industry that were previously mined by open pit methods. The size of the chambers impacts the operating cost, and the dimensioning of a correct support ensures better efficiency and safety. Correct knowledge of the k₀ therefore is critical for the design of the support. The proposed new method entails a simplification of the classical procedure for estimating the k-ratio.

"Centre de Morphologie MathématiqueSpecial problems arise in the evaluation of lateritic-type orebodies (Ni-Co, bauxite) or, more generally, orebodies affected by surface weathering. In this type of orebody, the vertical grade distribution shows, from the hangingwall downwards, a systematic increase followed sometimes by a certain decrease, or vice-versa. These trends appear together with irregular variations from one drill bole to the other.The problem is to characterize a vertical structure that is representative not only of the drill hole but of an entire panel or zone of influence, in order to define mineable thicknesses for given cut-off grades. The vertical grade distribution observed on the drillhole is replaced by a new curve, called 'derive' (drift), which is computed by 'universal kriging'.Once the vertical study is completed, new 'service-variables' are defined in the horizontal plane, such as mineable thickness and the corresponding average grade, economical functions (combination of the grades of several minerals). The local and global estimation of these variables can then be performed by a simple bi-dimensional kriging plan. The global estimation is summed up by several tonnage-cut-off grade curves.The practical valuation according to the above scheme of a New Caledonian lateritic nickel orebody is presented."

This paper investigates the recovery of platinum group metals (PGMs) from a dilute cyanide leach solution containing base metals, in a manner similar to that used for gold extraction in a typical CIP process, and focuses on both the adsorption and elution stages. The carrier-phase extraction of precious metals using activated carbon offers significant advantages over other processes in terms of simplicity, the high pre-concentration factor, rapid phase separation, and relatively low capital and operating costs. As a sorbent, activated carbon is still by far the most important material because of its large surface area, high adsorption capacity, porous structure, negligible environmental toxicity, low cost, and high purity standards. Adsorption tests were performed on a pregnant alkaline leach solution (0.15 ppm Pt, 0.38 ppm Pd, 0.1 ppm Au) resulting from cyanide extraction performed in column leach tests. The initial adsorption rates of platinum, palladium, and gold were very fast and recoveries of these three metals were approximately 90 per cent after 2 hours and 100 per cent, 97.4 per cent, and 99.9 per cent respectively after 72 hours. The parameters that influence the extraction of PGMs and Au were examined to assess their relative importance during the adsorption process in order to provide the basis for process optimization. The concentration of thiocyanate was not identified as significant factor for PGMs adsorption, while nickel concentration was the most significant extraction process parameter. Base metal cyanide complexes adsorb and compete with the PGM complexes for sites on activated carbon, and while copper adsorption can be minimized by adjusting the residence time, nickel adsorbs at approximately the same rate as that of the PGMs, influencing the loading capacity and adsorption kinetics of the PGMs. The feasibility of eluting platinum and palladium cyanide complexes from activated carbon using an analogue of the AARL process was investigated. Platinum and palladium elute from activated carbon almost to completion in 4 to 5 bed volumes at 80°C, while the elution of gold at this temperature is slow, with a significant amount of gold still to be eluted after 16 bed volumes. Cyanide pre-treatment was found to have a significant influence on PGM elution. Higher cyanide concentration in the pre-treatment step results in more efficient elution up to a point, and experiments suggest the possibility of an optimum cyanide concentration, beyond which elution efficiency starts decreasing.

In most auriferous hydrothermal deposits, gold is preferentially associated with pyrite and arsenopyrite minerals, with higher economic gold values noted for the latter and arsenian pyrite minerals. In this paper, surface (Cryo-XPS) and solution (EDTA extraction) analysis were used to characterise pyrite and arsenopyrite minerals under different aqueous conditions involving electrokinetic study and collector interactions to better understand ways of improving the separation of pyrite and arsenopyrite. The evidence showed higher surface oxidation at solution pulp pH values in the range of 4-11 for arsenopyrite relative to pyrite. The observed highest ratio of pyrite to arsenopyrite selectivity was 1.7 at collector concentration of 50 g/t and decreased with an increase in collector concentration. In South Africa, diamonds are mined predominantly in rural areas. Kimberlitic diamonds dominate in Limpopo and the Northern Cape Provinces whereas alluvial diamonds are mainly sourced from the North West and Northern Cape Provinces. There are a few large and medium sized diamond companies (De Beers, Petra Diamonds, Trans Hex, Rockwell and Alexkor). There are many smaller companies involved in diamond mining, mostly alluvial diamond mines. The nature of alluvial diamond deposits is that they are aerially more extensive and thus their surface impacts are more pervasive: The recent downturn in diamond prices has resulted in the sudden cessation of mining at many small and medium diamond operations. Spiral concentrators are compact, cost-effective and generally efficient gravity concentration separators for a wide range of applications (for example: coal, beach sands, iron ore, chromite and tantalite). Large mineral processing plants consist of thousands of spiral concentrators resulting in large plant footprints (capital intensive) and the adjustment of splitters is time consuming, impractical and is in many cases neglected?high capacity (HC) spiral concentrators aim to address these shortcomings. As a result Exxaro Namakwa Sands is currently investigating high capacity spiral technology for the spiral circuit upgrade at the primary concentrator plants (PCPs). This article summarizes the rougher spiral performance evaluation that was conducted on different types of spiral concentrators (the traditional MG4 spiral concentrator and the high capacity (HC) spiral concentrator) under different feed conditions. In addition, the effect of slimes on the spiral concentrator performance was also investigated. Slimes rheology was linked to the poor concentrator performance at the higher slimes concentrations. The test campaign shows a sacrifice in recovery under design-feed conditions can be expected when using high capacity spiral concentrators in the rougher stage when compared to traditional spiral technology currently in use. Both spiral concentrators show a detrimental impact of slimes on the performance, but the high capacity spiral concentrator is more sensitive to the higher slimes conditions.

Exxaro installed their first ultra fines treatment plant at Leeuwpan Coal mine. The plant is now fully operational and results already show that the plant has great potential. The plant was designed and installed by DRA. Several challenges were faced during the installation due to the space constraints in the Leeuwpan plant. Efficiency tests were conducted on both modules after commissioning and showed very promising results. A lower ash product with a higher yield can be produced with the fine coal dense medium cyclones compared to the spirals previously employed.

"After detonation of the explosive, the final blast-induced damage area around the blast-hole falls into three categories, namely crushed zone, fractured zone, and elastic deformation zone. This paper presents a modified model to calculate the size of crushed zone around a blast-hole in drill-and-blast, with the hoop compressive stress and cavity expansion effect taken into account. The material in the crushed zone was assumed to be a granular medium without cohesion, but with internal friction. On this basis, the formula for crushing zone radius was derived. The proposed approach was verified with tests reported in the literature and the simulated results from SPH-FEM coupled models. A full statistical analysis was also carried out, and the predicted values were found to be in better agreement with the test results compared with other models. A sensitivity analysis of the modified model showed that the size of the blast-induced damage area is mainly affected by the following factors: rock mass properties, in situ stress, and borehole pressure. In particular, the roles of borehole pressure and in situ stress are discussed. Finally, suggestions are made on how the size of the crushing zones can be decreased. IntroductionOver the past decades, drill-and-blast has become the most commonly used technology in rock excavation. It is well known that in rock mass fragmentation with explosives, the annular rocks around the blast-hole are converted into fines. The formation of these fines consumes a significant part of the energy of the detonation, which in general is ignored in the determination of the efficiency of detonation (Glatolenkov and Ivanov, 1992; Furtney et al., 2012). Many studies show that only 20–30% of the total explosive energy is effectively used in fragmenting the rock, and up to 50% of the energy generated by conventional charges is wasted in overcrushing of the crushed zone and the inner part of the fractured zone (Ouchterlony et al., 2004; Sanchidrian et al., 2007). How to control the crushed zone to enhance the effective utilization of explosive energy, reducing the unit explosive consumption and the engineering cost, is therefore of great significance."

This paper provides a review on coloured gold, platinum, andpalladium intermetallic compounds, and discusses the models thatwere developed to obtain these materials. These compounds have acrystal structure of high symmetry, such as the CaF2or CsClstructures, ensuring distinct electron band structures. Variousexamples of coloured gold, platinum, and palladium intermetalliccompounds are provided. More in-depth discussion is provided on thepurple gold (AuAl2) and yellow platinum-aluminium (PtAl2)compounds with CaF2structure, as well as the purplish-pinkpalladium-indium (PdIn) compound with CsCl structure. Precious metal intermetallic compounds are used in jewellery andprovide a new dimension to design. Some of these compounds havealso found use as barrier coatings on turbine blades for jet engines,and more recently, research has been conducted into their potentialuse as catalysts, electro-catalysts, sensors, capacitors, and fordecorative coatings.

DEM simulations were used in this research to study the screening process of a novel variable amplitude equal thickness vibration screen (VAETVS). The response regularity of mass distribution and granular moving velocity at the different screen panels to feed rate was investigated and the predictive model for the unit area processing load was proposed. The influence of aperture size, the size variance, and the opening ratio on the mass passing-distribution and overall screening performance, respectively, were revealed. The results showed that the response model of the unit area load Ф to the feed rate Q can be concluded as Ф∝0.324×Q. The moving velocity of particles also showed a positive relevance to the feed rate, besides which the passing rate of fine-grained material at the feed end was negatively related to the aperture size, while the case was reversed in the feed end. The increase of aperture variance AV enhanced the passing ability of small particles at the feed end,and reduced the misplaced ratio of the large particles at the discharge end. A better screening efficiency can be obtained when the average aperture size of the entire sieve is 7.5 mm, with the aperture variance of 1 mm between the adjacent panels. This paper shows the importance of performing probabilistic analyses in open pits, especially for mine planning, which can lead to more efficient ore extraction and meeting the acceptability criteria for safety in mine slopes. Three-dimensional stability analyses were performed to evaluate the future geometry of a large open pit for iron ore extraction in Brazil. The strength parameters of the lithologies were calibrated using ruptures in the pit walls. After determining the factors of safety (FoSs) from the calibrated parameters, probabilistic analyses were performed using the total range of values of each parameter under different field conditions to verify the reliability of the initial analysis. In this sense, it was possible to plot the probability of failure (PoF) and the FoS on the graph of slope height versus slope interramp angle (IRA) for the future pit in each lithology. IRA recommendations are made for two scenarios: (1) the best scenario: dry without ubiquitous joints and (2) the worst scenario: the water table at 10 m depth with ubiquitous joints in the most unfavourable direction. The results show that probabilistic evaluation is an important tool for establishing alert mechanisms in slopes that can be termed stable.

We present a discrete event simulator, TSJSim (Truck-Shovel JaamSim Simulator), for evaluating the stochastic and dynamic operational variables in a truck-shovel system. TSJSim offers four truck allocation strategies: Fixed truck assignment (FTA), Minimizing shovel production requirement (MSPR), Minimizing truck waiting time (MTWT), and Minimizing truck semi-cycle time (MTSCT) including the genetic algorithm (GA) optimization and the frozen dispatching algorithm (FDA) optimization rules. Multiple decision points along the haul routes for all the trucks close to the decision points were included in the model. The simulation results indicate that the trends associated with production tons and queuing time utilizing the four truck allocation strategies (MSPR, MTWT, FDA, and GA) all demonstrated similar patterns as the fleet size varied. As the system fleet size increased, the system production tons under these strategies at first increased significantly and then remained relatively constant; the queuing time relating to these strategies showed a positive relationship with the system fleet size. The bunching time decreased when the truck allocation strategies were applied in the model. In the simulated truck-shovel network system with multiple traffic intersections, by assigning the trucks at the intersections, both productivity and fleet utilization increased.

The 10.5–12.5% chromium, titanium-stabilized ferritic stainless steel (FSS) plates used to fabricate coal line jumbo wagons is susceptible to undesirable chromium depletion during welding with 309L electrodes. In this work, non-stabilized FSS plates were welded using 308L welding electrodes. The objective was to weld non-stabilized FSSs using gas-shielded metal arc welding without causing sensitization. The welding process was optimized by lowering the heat input. Sensitization was assessed by rigorous etching techniques and anodic polarization scans. In addition, the welds were subjected to tensile testing, and their fracture surfaces were examined for intergranular cracking. Non-stabilized FSS plates were successfully welded using gas metal arc welding.
