Safety in South African mines is a subject of significant interest, since many mining companies are experiencing production deficits due to safety-related stoppages. In this paper, safety data from the South African platinum mining sector is analysed for the period 2006 to 2010. The data was obtained from company annual reports as well as the Department of Mineral Resources, and analysis in the study is limited to injury and fatality data only. The overall safety performances of companies in the sector are compared, and opportunities for benchmarking and recognising potential sources of best practice amongst platinum miners are identified. Improving safety usually incurs a cost, and mining companies are particularly conscious of the importance of controlling costs. However, cost considerations often deal only with direct costs, and it has been shown that indirect costs are usually far more significant. Therefore, a greater safety spend will usually result in the creation of value for the mine since it will reduce the indirect costs associated with accidents. The results of some recent research in this area are presented. In this light, where available, the financial performances of mining companies in the sector, obtained from published annual results, are included in the benchmarking exercise to determine whether there is any correlation with safety performance.

Flotation is one of the most important processes in the copper production industry. The copper grade in the concentrate is a pivotal indicator of the flotation process performance. However, it is difficult to achieve real-time measurement through hardware sensors. Based on the production data provided by an industrial operation, a novel soft sensor based on multi-layer perceptron (MLP) is proposed for effective monitoring of this pivotal indicator. The proposed soft sensor uses the nonnegative garrote (NNG) to perform global variable selection for MLP, while a local search (LS) approach is incorporated to improve the model presented by NNG. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm has higher prediction accuracy and better model simplicity than other algorithms. Furthermore, the variables selected are consistent with the field experience, and the developed model can provide reference of feedback control for the optimisation of the process. A new copper-molybdenum flotation technology developed for a certain coppermolybdenum ore is introduced. We achieved copper-molybdenum bulk flotation in lowalkali conditions. Locked-circuit test results showed that the bulk concentrate contained 21.05% Cu and 1.10% Mo, with copper recovery of 87.37% and molybdenum recovery of 77.07%. For the copper–molybdenum separation process of the bulk concentrate, we use a new depressant, BK511, to replace the traditional sodium hydrosulfide. We achieved copper–molybdenum separation through one rougher, nine cleaner, and two scavenger processes. The results of locked-circuit tests showed that the molybdenum concentrate contained 46.19% Mo and 0.75% Cu, with molybdenum recovery of 93.80%; the copper concentrate contained 21.50% Cu and 0.069% Mo, with copper recovery of 99.92%. This new technology overcomes disadvantages of using large amounts of lime, sodium hydrosulfide, and other reagents in traditional copper–molybdenum flotation.

"TiCl4 slurry containing valuable metals is an unavoidable by-product of the titanium ore chlorination process. The recovery of these valuable metals, which include titanium, niobium, tantalum, and aluminum, is an urgent issue to tackle in the titanium industry. The results of this investigation show that the valuable metallic elements can be recovered from the slurry by evaporation in a sealed container and leaching with dilute hydrochloric acid. After evaporation at 200°C for 60 minutes, nearly 99% of the titanium was recovered in the form of TiCl4, which was formed by the reaction of the TiO2 in the slurry with AlCl3. After evaporation, metals like niobium, aluminum, and tantalum remained in the residue. By leaching with 2.1 mol/L HCl at a L/S ratio of 6:1 mL/g at 80°C for 60 minutes, the soluble metals, such as aluminum, iron, and copper were all removed from the residue, and the niobium and tantalum were further enriched in the leach residue. A concentrate containing 53.40 wt% Nb and 5.57 wt% Ta was obtained by washing the leach residue with dilute aqueous ammonia under stirring. A potential waste water purifying agent containing 263.75 g/L AlCl3 was produced by purifying the leaching solution with Al(OH)3 and modified polyacrylamide. IntrodutionTitanium tetrachloride (TiCl4) is an important intermediate in titanium metallurgy that is widely used in the production of titania and titanium sponge (Akhtar, Xiong, and Pratsinis, 1991). In conventional titanium metallurgical processes, high-titanium materials such as synthetic rutile and high-titanium slag are reacted with chlorine to produce TiCl4 in a fluidized-bed furnace. Accompanying elements, such as Al, Nb, and Fe also react with chlorine to form chlorides, which are mixed with gaseous TiCl4 (Anderson, 1917). In the condensation process, gaseous TiCl4 is refrigerated and high-boiling-point chlorides are precipitated in the liquid TiCl4 to form a slurry containing 50~60 wt% TiCl4 (Wang, Xiang, and Wang, 2012).Various methods have been proposed to recover TiCl4 from the slurry, including microwave heating and spray drying (Wang, Xiang, and Wang, 2012, Wang et al., 2010a). To date, the only way to recover the TiCl4 is to return the slurry to the fluidized-bed furnace. However, this causes fluctuations in the temperature in the furnace, resulting in incomplete reaction between titanium-rich materials and chlorine. Therefore, the slurry is often rinsed with water and neutralized by adding lime, which caused serious environmental pollution and wastes a valuable resource (Roy, Bhatt, and Rajagopal, 2003)."

In a cobalt precipitation plant, phosphoric acid is used to eliminate excess uranium from the pregnant leach solution, resulting in a cobalt hydroxide product that has little uranium contamination. However, the amount of phosphoric acid added must be monitored and controlled to avoid financial and sustainability impacts and to prevent negative impacts on the final product quality. One possible solution to this problem is the use of online residual phosphorus measurement techniques to regulate the addition. By continuously monitoring the residual phosphorus levels in the solution, the plant can adjust dosing in real time to maintain the target residual phosphorus level. As a result, the cobalt precipitation plant can improve phosphorus level control, lowering the risk of overdosing, and ensuring consistent product quality. This approach can also improve process efficiency, reduce operational costs, and have a positive environmental impact

"SynopsisMining value chains are dynamic systems and should be managed according to systemic flow-based principles. This includes a detailed focus on the impact of variable geological conditions on material flow, product quality, and production cost, visibility of the total mining system to operators and managers, as well as the synchronization of resources and activities in downstream processes. Thirty mining operations across the African continent were studied to establish to what extent systemic flowbased principles are applied in day-to-day operations. The study indicated that although most mining operations have identified the relevant geoprocessing variables, only a small number apply this information in a flow-based management approach. Most mining operators do not focus on developing a clear flow view of the mining value chain and on making it visible to operators and managers to enable them to optimally set and reset operations. Daily synchronization of geoprocessing variables is limited to a small number of variables, e.g. synchronizing ore hardness with drilling or milling requirements, in less than 30% of the operations evaluated. Operations where these principles have been adopted reported a noteworthy improvement in performance. The study indicates that notable potential exists in most of the operations evaluated to implement flowbased management principles, including geometallurgical principles. This can significantly improve value chain performance without exorbitant capital layouts and enhance ROCE. IntroductionObjective of the studyThe study seeks to establish to what extent systemic flow-based principles have been adopted in the southern African mining industry and the implications thereof. Specific attention is given to the importance of defining and managing geoprocessing dependencies (geological variables directly impacting mining and plant performance – the geometallurgical approach), establishing a flow view of the mining system, which typically includes a dashboard of the flow of ore/product quality and cost from the mining face to the customer, and limiting the impact of dependencies through synchronization of activities and resources, e.g. ensuring that a continuous miner does not wait for a roofbolter, or that reagent addition rates are matched with a specific ore/concentrate composition."

The high-sulfur bauxite in Henan Province was used as raw material. The grinding fineness, pH value and collector dosage on its desulfurization performance, and industrial flotation desulfurization process were studied. The best flotation desulfurization conditions were grinding fineness of 75%, pH of 8.5, and collector of 600 g/t. “One coarse, one cleaning and one sweep” closed-circuit flotation was established as the industrial flotation desulfurization process. After the closed circuit test, the sulfur content of aluminum concentrate with the yield of 93% was 0.23%, and the sulfur removal rate was 83.16%, and the sulfur content of tailings (sulfur concentrate) was 15.09%. The demand for stainless steel is ever-increasing. As an essential element in stainless steel-making process, so is the demand of chromite concentrate. At the same time, the industry proven technologies for beneficiation of chromite are limited. Chromite is only crushed, screened and jigged to produce a concentrate. However, for ultrafine and low-grade material, no satisfactory beneficiation methods for the enrichment of chromite fines exist in industrial operation. This poses a clear challenge for the industry, which Primetals Technologies has addressed with the development of a new beneficiation process. The aim of this process was to enrich low grade chromite tailings to a quality suitable for the smelting process. Required concentrate grades are different over the world, concentrate grades of Cr2O3=40% and lower are found at the Bushveld Complex, South Africa. The target for the present study was a Cr2O3-grade in the area of 49%. Three different chromite tailings with Cr2O3 grades between 16 % and 29 % were part of a study, executed by Primetals Technologies. All three tailing materials were characterised by Mineral Liberation Analysis (MLA). Based on the physical, chemical and mineralogical findings, process flowsheets were developed. The process flowsheets included grinding to ensure a full liberation of the chromite. The liberated material was classified at a cut size of 63 μm to a coarse and fine fraction. Gravity separation and flotation processes were tested with the coarse particle fraction. Due to the limitations of gravity separation with fine particles, only the flotation process is suitable and was tested with the fine fraction < 63 μm. A Design of Experiment (DoE) with six factors, each three levels, was conducted to identify optimal parameters for the fine chromite flotation. Two different collectors were tested: a phosphoric acid ester and a fatty acid type collector. In small scale test work a chromite concentration suitable for the smelting process was achieved. On this basis Primetals Technologies will develop a pilot-scale test program to research recirculation effects and upscale potential of the process. The upsurge in cobalt price and demand is propelled by high demand from the electronics and electric vehicle industry. Konkola Copper Mines has cobalt occurring with copper in the ratio 1:10 in ore. The ore is treated in the concentrator and recovered at the smelter as an alloy (Cu 70%, Co 4%–7%, 15% Fe). Subsequent processing of the cobalt alloy is challenging, with very few plants able to treat it, leading to marketing challenges. Konkola Copper Mines sought to improve the cobalt alloy by producing a slag that is easier to handle and process in subsequent processes. Cobalt alloy (3.60% Co, 85.4% Cu) was re-melted in a copper bath four times the mass of the alloy. Silica and lime were added for phase separation and fire refining commenced. Following completion of fire refining and after holding the temperature at 1200°C, cobalt-rich slag was skimmed and blister copper was cast into anodes for electrorefining

The complex refractory Cu-Pb-Zn polymetallic ore in Xinjiang, China is a massive sulphide ore with complex mineral components. In the past two years, the ore mineralogy has changed, resulting in a decline in metallurgy, with too much zinc reporting to the lead and copper concentrates. A detailed mineralogical study indicating the presence of secondary copper minerals, which could be activating the sphalerite early in the present circuit, was used to develop a novel reagent and flotation flowsheet termed “Pb-Cu co-flotation, Cu intensified flotation, Zn flotation”. It was tested and found to significantly contribute to improving the flotation performance of the ore. In the Pb-Cu co-flotation circuit, successful depression of pyrite and sphalerite was achieved using a BK612- Na2S based depressant system. Most of the galena and some of the Cu bearing minerals with excellent floatability were collected with the use of the selective collector BK906. The rest of Cu bearing minerals were floated in a copper Z200 circuit using a BK537-lime-zinc sulphate based depressant scheme. Zinc flotation from the copper tailing was performed in a SIBX circuit using lime as a pyrite depressant. Using the proposed flowsheet, overall Pb, Cu, and Zn recovery increased significantly to 88%, 87%, and 90% respectively. Calls for transformation in the mining sector are legislated. Whilst the composition of boards in terms of gender diversity and equal representation has improved, little is known on how women directors experience boardrooms. This research investigated the experiences of South African women in male-dominated mining boards. It questions why women remain marginalised in boardrooms, even when they are qualified as the men in their respective fields. The experiences of South African women on male-dominated mining boards were investigated by means of a multiple case study using a qualitative research methodology. Interviews were conducted with 16 women and 12 men serving across six JSE-listed South African mining companies. The findings show that irrespective of their qualification and experience, women,s, contributions are often ignored, and they are assigned to more social roles. Regardless of race, all women experienced gender stereotyping. Strategies are required to ensure that board cultures embrace female talent, where women can effectively contribute to decision-making and maximize their talent. It is argued that gender and identity should be studied in relation to post-colonial history in African countries. Women have multiple, varying identities, and their experiences require a unique investigation that would enable strategies to overcome barriers, through the implementation of an appropriate diversity management programme.

Fluorination of magnetite (Fe₃O₄) by NH₄HF₂ was investigated using simultaneous thermogravimetry and differential thermal analysis (TG-DTA), and observing the morphology and phase changes using scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM-EDS) and X-ray diffractometry (XRD). The results indicate that fluorination with the involvement of oxygen begins at room temperature, peaks at 178.40C, and is completed at 2000C with the formation of only (NH₄)₃FeF₆. On heating, (NH₄)₃FeF₆ gradually releases NH₄F by the formation of NH₄FeF₄ at 2590C, then (NH₄)0.18FeF₃ at 3270C, and finally FeF₃ with minor FeF₂ at 4000C due to the partial reduction of Fe (III) to Fe (II). At 5500C, FeF₃ is oxidized to FeOF/Fe₂O₃.

The dispersion of mature fine oil sands tailings (MFT) by the addition of sodium lignosulfonate was studied using contact angle measurements, optical scattering, and particle size measurements. Lignosulfonate caused the release of residual bitumen to the slurry surface and settlement of fines. Dynamic contact angle by captive bubble measurements were carried out on bitumen to determine the effect of the dispersant on the wettability of bitumen. Lignosulfonate caused a change in the aggregation state of the MFT and increased sedimentation of particles, as indicated by optical scattering measurements. Zeta potential measurements indicate that this change was caused by an increase in adsorption of lignosulfonate onto particles, which caused improved settling of the colloid. Ultraviolet Visible (UV) spectrophotometry and organic carbon content measurements showed that only a small amount of the reagent remains in the aqueous phase of the tailings, which is critical for decontamination of recycled water. A stepwise arrangement of flotation cells is the most common layout of a flotation circuit in the mineral processing industry. In such a design, slurry flows from upstream to downstream by means of gravity, and the middling products are returned to previous stages by pumps. This paper will introduce an alternative solution in which the forced-air and slurry-induced flotation cells are adopted so that all the flotation cells can be placed on the same horizontal platform and no pumps will be needed for middling product transferring. The technology of the forced-air and slurry-induced flotation cell will be described in detail, including unique features, the working principle and the related fundamental problems. The comparison of capital investment, operating cost and metallurgical performance will be made between the conventional stepwise arrangement and the samelevel arrangement technology based on industrial practice. During the exploration phase of mine development, drilling location is in the hands of the geologist, and drilling is spread over the entire domain of the property or deposit boundary. During the mine planning and production phases, however, the mining engineer also needs to use the information obtained from the drilling program. Thus it is important that he/she have some input into the selection of the drillhole locations. Usually, when exploitation will center on one portion of the property for the immediate future, the mine engineer will want to have more of the drilling performed in this area. In the early stages, the purpose of the drilling was to make a decision concerning whether or not to develop a mine. Once the decision is made to proceed with this development, the mine engineer needs to know, with as much confidence as possible, the estimate of the ore grade at each location where mining will occur. This paper addresses the problem of drillhole location for the needs of the mining engineer. The goal is to compare a variety of approaches to drillhole location with a new approach developed by the author. This approach is based on the theory of geostatistics, with the estimation variance used as the quantitative measure of the confidence attained. The goal of the algorithm is to select those locations that minimize the estimation variance subject to constraints on the number of drillholes and the total cost of the drilling program. The kriging equations are used as another set of constraints. The resulting nonlinear optimization model is expressed in terms of binary (0 - 1) decision variables leading to a solution by the branch-and-bound procedure. The algorithm has been applied at a number of operating properties, and practical results and suggestions for implementation are provided.

Generally, filter media used in filter presses have a limited operational life. Besides mechanical damage, there is a growing deposition of fine particles with increasing filtration cycles, the so-called blinding, inside the filter cloth. The resulting decreasing pore diameters not only affect the efficiency of the filtration process itself by increasing the filter medium resistance, but also make it more difficult to regenerate the filter press between the individual cycles, e.g. leading to an insufficient cake discharge. Since tailings filtration requires handling of large process flows containing a significant fraction of particles in the lower micrometer range, an investigation into media rejuvenation is of interest. Tribo-electrostatic separation is a promising method for effectively utiliing low-grade magnesite resources by removing quartz and improving the grade of magnesite. To determine the chargeto- mass ratios of pure magnesite and quartz, a triboelectric measurement system was employed, and a laboratory tribo-electrostatic separation system was used to separate low-grade magnesite. The results showed that the maximum difference in charge-to-mass ratio between pure magnesite and quartz particles was observed after friction with polyvinyl chloride. The grade and recovery of magnesite increased with temperature and initially increased with increasing voltage, feed rate, and air flowrate before gradually decreasing. The optimal conditions resulted in a concentrate with 46.91% MgO content and 77.36% recovery, while the quartz content decreased from 7.02% to 1.95%. These experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness and potential of tribo-electrostatic separation in removing quartz and upgrading magnesite.

ST Equipment & Technology (STET)’s tribo-electrostatic belt separator technology allows for the beneficiation of fine mineral powders by means of an entirely water-free technology with high throughput and low energy consumption. The STET separator is suited for separation of very fine (<1 μm) to moderately coarse (500 μm) particles, in contrast to other electrostatic processes that are typically limited to particles >75 μm in size. STET has performed exploratory studies with several iron ores including tailings and experimental results to date have demonstrated that low-grade iron fines can be upgraded by means of STET tribo-electrostatic separator to commercial grades (58-65%Fe). Experimental results together with high-level economic evaluations indicate that scavenging processes involving low drying costs, DSO operations and tailings beneficiation offer a commercially viable processing method to recover fine iron that would otherwise be lost by traditional processing. Dry electrostatic processing of iron ore presents a clean, low-energy opportunity for iron producers to reduce costs and wet tailings generation associated with traditional gravimetric, flotation and wet magnetic separation circuits. Moreover, STET technology allows for mining waste utilisation and resource recovery from iron ore fines and tailings, therefore offering processors a novel method to recover fines that would otherwise be difficult to process to sellable grades with existing technologies. Flotation is a complex physical chemical process in which flotation reagents play a vital role in valuable minerals recovery and concentrate grades. This study examines the performance of new generation AECI Mining Chemicals (previously named Senmin) collectors. They were developed to enhance the valuable minerals recovery and flotation selectivity by tailoring the collectors to target specific valuable mineral species present in an ore and thus create added value for concentrators treating PGM ores. The case study was conducted on a Platreef ore, where batch flotation tests were performed and the concentrates were mineralogically characterised for PGE and BMS using QEMSCAN. Further batch flotation testwork was conducted on Merensky and UG2 ores from various localities in South Africa to confirm the trends observed for Platreef ore. The results have shown that there is a strong correlation between PGE mineral type and AECI Mining Chemicals collector type - clearly demonstrating that one reagent type does not fit all flotation applications.
