The disposal of the brines produced with crude petroleum and natural gas has long been a constant source of trouble to oil and gas operators as well as to farmers and stock-raisers in the vicinity of producing fields. The amount of oilfield brines Produced from wells on new properties may be almost negligible, but some older wells may produce several hundred barrels a day. A survey of almost 200 wells on 31 properties in the eastern part of Osage County, Okla., showed that during the month of November, 1928, the average production of water was 3.26 barrels per barrel of oil produced. The age of the wells included in this survey ranged from two to 28 years; the maximum amount of brine produced was 26 barrels of water to one barrel of oil and the lowest was one barrel of water to 27 barrels of oil. These figures apply to a small area. In other fields the production of water also varies widely; for example, in the Cushing4, Okla., field several yells were reported as having produced 100 barrels of water to every barrel of oil produced. Often the production of oil-field brines is decreased materially and the production of petroleum increased by the use of bottom hole Plugs and by a general repair and cementing of wells. The records5 of 22 wells cemented in the Gushing field showed that prior to the repair work, the average total dally production was 242.5 barrels of oil and 3,977.5 barrels of water. """Rock-dust barriers""5 as they are termed in this country, are for the purpose of confining a coal-dust mine explosion to the limited area in which it originates. These barriers were first tested in 1910-1911, with favorable results under the conditions of test, at the French official gallery which was then at Lieven, Department of Pas-de-Calais. Shortly afterwards the Bureau of Mines in the course of its investigation of all practical explosion-prevention methods tried barriers in the Experimental Mine near Bruceton, using the primary form of simple fixed cross shelves 20 inches wide extending over the passageway and laden with rock-dust. The Bureau termed them “Taffanel barriers"" in honor of the director of the Lieven testing station. The trials were made in conjunction with tests of explosibility of different coal-dusts.Experience showed that although the principle of barriers had merit when they were used for secondary defence, the primary form was uncertain in effectiveness. This led the senior author to design mechanically discharging barriers to be operated by the compression air waves which precede the flame of an explosion. For the better understanding of the principal involved, it is pointed out that the advance air waves are what make a coal-dust explosion possible by stirring up the coal-dust from the walls and floor of the passageway. If a barrier can throw inert dust into the air to form a cloud as dense or denser than that formed by the coal-dust, it will neutralize the explosiveness of the coal-dust, and the flame of the explosion will be extinguished. When the flame ceases, the pressure dies away in a short distance if the 'area that had been traversed by the explosion is not large."

Wyoming contains many petroleum and natural-gas fields, and more than 250 geological structures have been mapped; however, only about 85 have been found (July 1938) to contain petroleum or natural gas, or both, in commercial quantities. To January 1938 approximately 434 million barrels of oil and 915 billion cubic feet of gas have been produced, and it was estimated that proved oil reserves in Wyoming amounted to 300 million barrels.' The Salt Creek field, the largest in the Rocky Mountain area, alone has produced 64 percent of the State's oil and 46 percent of its gas. This field ranked thirteenth among the producing fields of the United States in total cumulative production as of January 1, 1938. On this basis it ranks with the Kern River and Huntington Beach fields of California and the Butler County fields of Kansas. The Salt Creek field has declined in relative importance; in 1937, while still the largest oil-producing field in the State, it produced 31 percent of the oil and 11 percent of the gas extracted from all wells in Wyoming.

The Bureau of Mines conducted a comprehensive study of the Kanab, Kolob, Kaiparowits, and Harmony coalfields of southwestern Utah to obtain additional information and to determine the potentials of these coalfields as sources of energy for steam-electric power-generating plants. Field examinations were made to ascertain the geologic structure and the stratigraphy of the coalfields, the accessibility of the coal-bearing strata, and the general nature of the coal-bearing strata and the terrain. Many mines, both active and abandoned, were examined, and key personnel in the coal industry in the area were consulted. Available analyses of southwestern Utah coals were compiled, and tentative conclusions regarding the rank and quality of the coals were drawn. Coals have been classified by rank according to the standards established by the American Society for Testing and Materials in 1964. The Parr formula for moist, mineral-matter-free British thermal units has been used to calculate the rank of each sample, except as otherwise noted. Water resources related to the areas of the coal reserves also were investigated. Existing literature and maps pertaining to the geology of the areas were reviewed. Production potentials of the coalfields and economic conditions affecting the possible utilization of the coal reserves as sources of energy for steam-powered electricity-generating plants were investigated and analyzed. The data obtained and the conclusions reached as a result of this study are included in this document. The total reserves of subbituminous A and high-volatile bituminous C coals in the fields of southwestern Utah are estimated to be at least 8 billion short tons at depths generally less than 2,000 feet. It appears likely that this estimate will be increased as additional data are made available through exploration and other investigations. Sufficient coal is available in four southwestern Utah counties to supply three or four large steam-electric plants. If the States involved grant water rights to companies planning to build steam-electric plants, the cost of producing power with coal might be attractive and might justify the construction of one or more of these plants.

The necessary uniformity of mixture to produce slags of regular composition and the choice of the slag—forming ingredients and products to be formed can be made only before the charge to dropped.It was found (R.I. 3096) at Kellogg, where the charge is mostly sinter, that the ratio of the slag—forming ingredients taken from each tuyere was nearly constant, in contrast to the irregular composition of slags taken similarly from a furnace whose charge consisted of ingredients differing greatly in chemical and physical nature, including size. If the charge consists almost entirely of sinter, the blast furnace should then operate more uniformly."

"The agglomerating index of coal is an index based upon the nature of the coke residue left when the standard volatile-matter determination of the well-known proximate analysis is made. In this determination a small amount of coal is heated in a container to about 950° C. (1,742° F.), at which temperature the volatile matter is driven off, leaving a coke formation. The coke residues for various coals are quite different in physical structure: and, for some time past, work has been done on studies of the nature of these residues in connection with the coking of coal. In 1934 Gilmore, Connell, and Nicolls proposed use of the agglomerating index for indicating the dividing line between noncaking coals and those having weakly caking properties. 4/ Its use was adopted in the standard classification of coals by rank as a requisite physical property index to differentiate semianthracite from low-volatile bituminous coal and also high-volatile ""C"" bituminous from subbituminous ""A"" coal, as shown in table 1, the standard coal classification adopted by the American Society for Testing Materials and the American Standards Association. 5./In studying the agglomerating properties of coals based on the coke residue the Bureau of Mines has adopted the notation given in table 2. Coals that in the volatile-matter determination give a coke residue either in the form of an agglomerate button that will support a 500-gram weight without pulverizing or a button that shows swelling or cell structure are considered to be agglomerating."

This report presents a discussion of perforance parameters for electronic or active hearing protectors that will meet the needs of underground coal miners. This information is incorporated into a proposed set of specifications that can be used to judge the suitability of a particular electronic hearing protector for the coal mine application. Acoustic and electrical tests were performed on a developmental model of an electronic hearing protector built by the U. S. Bureau of Mines. This model showed only a slight reduction in speech intelligibility which was traced to poorly matched components and in particular to the transducers. Tests of alternative components showed the Knowles BL-1671 microphone to be suitable for this application because of its performance and extremely small size. The Roan-well H-143/AIC earphone was found to have a good frequency response but has the disadvantage of being rather bulky which causes a slight degradation of a low frequency attenuation of the hearing protector. A satisfactory installation of these components in a hearing protector muff was demonstrated and tested. Results of tests of several methods of controlling the sound level under the hearing protector muff showed that a simple diode clipper circuit can be used with only a negligible loss in speech intelligibility for normal-hearing listeners. A commercially available active hearing protector, the British-built ACOS A-9000/2 was examined. This hearing protector provides sound level limiting through a saturating amplifier. Preliminary tests have shown that the performance characteristics of this commercial unit meet many of the proposed specifications so further testing and evaluation should be performed to determine its suitability for use 1n underground coal mines. The recommended test of intelligibility for electronic hearing protectors and other communication systems as used in a coal mine setting is the Modified Rhyme Test (MRT) developed by House et al. in 1965. The suitability and method of administering this test are discussed.

"INTRODUCTION The Treasure Hill mines, situated in Dry Canyon, Ophir mining district, Tooele County, Utah, together with several other properties in the district, examined were examined by Frank L. Wideman, an engineer, the Bureau of Mines, in September 1942.In April 1945, development drilling was started on the Treasure Hill mines, which are operated under lease from the Madison Mines Co. The project was continued in 1946 and terminated in 1947.While the Bureau of Mines project was in progress, the Morgan and Fullion tunnel workings were surveyed by Bureau engineers.ACKNOWKEDGEMENTSIn its program of investigation of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy, It is the policy of the Bureau to publish the facts developed by each project as soon as practicable after its conclusion. A series of controlled experiments was conducted at four surface coal mines to study the effects of certain blast parameters upon the ground and air vibration. Preliminary scale-model blasts were conducted at a quarry to provide basic data. It was found that the amplitudes of the ground and air vibration were controlled by the maximum explosive weight per delay. Either cube root or square root scaling could be used for the seismic amplitudes, and cube root scaling could be used for the overpressure amplitudes. Both amplitudes were not significantly affected by the total charge weight per blast, the attitude of the boreholes, or the charge length or diameter. The overpressure amplitudes were affected by the charge depth, the use of cover over surface detonating cord, and the use of adequate stemming. The length of the delay intervals and the spacing of holes were important in determining the potential for reinforcement of the amplitudes in certain directions from the blasts. In downwind directions from the blast, the attenuation of the overpressure with distance decreases. Surface terrain t did not significantly affect the overpressure amplitudes within the range investigated. The type of overburden affects the generation of both amplitudes and the propagation of the seismic amplitudes. Spectral analysis of the ground and air vibration is reported. A bibliography of pertinent literature is included as an appendix. A scaled distance of 300 ft/lb1/3 should produce a peak particle velocity of less than 1 ips and an overpressure of less than 128 dB linear peak. For square root scaling, a scaled distance of 75 ft/lbl/2 should limit the ground vibration to less than 1 ips.

The commission may be permitted to express its earnest hope that the litigation which comes to an end with the findings and recom- mendations herein set forth will be considered by both parties to the action as definitely and equitably decided. The commission trusts that its work will show the value of the commission form of settlement and that its work will serve as a prece- dent to be followed in disputes relative to technical subjects. If the work of the commission is productive of a tendency on the part of technical litigants to avoid the use of the courts for the settlement of disputes it will not have been done in vain. Such tendency will surely grow and ultimately such differences will be arbitrated by technically trained men without recourse to the courts of law. Appended to the report of the findings of the commission are to be found the detailed reports covering the several lines of inquiry and investigation carried on by the commission and upon which its findings are based, and also a detailed statement of the fiscal affairs of the commission. A word of explanation is necessary in regard to the fiscal statement. While each party to the litigation has agreed to bear one-half of the expense of the investigations of the commission, it will be noted that the Selby Smelting & Lead Co. is credited with $21,000, while Solano County is credited with but $6,000. In order that the investigations of the commission might go forward without interruption the Selby Smelting & Lead Co. has generously supplied funds at the times they were needed. The U.S. Bureau of Mines, in cooperation with Carter Mining Co., conducted vibration tests of four off-road vehicle seats. The purpose of the tests was to determine which seat provided the best vibration attenuation under laboratory conditions. Laboratory tests were constructed to simulate the mining vibration environment within the limitations of the test equipment. The acceleration test levels and corresponding response of the seats were low compared to IS0 2631's fatigue-decreased-proficiency time limits. Two of the seats employed mechanical suspensions and two seats employed air suspensions. The seats were tested using a 22,241-N (5,000-lbf) electrodynamic shaker. Mechanical suspension seats were tested with various preload-to-mass ratios (PMR's) and cushion densities. Air suspension seats were tested with various air pressure levels and seat cushion densities. Air suspension seats provided good vibration attenuation if pressurized greater than 552 kPa (80 psi). Mechanical suspension seats' attenuation performance decreased if the PMR exceeded 9.8. Seat cushions of lower density provided less vibration damping.

A quick-reaction, mine permissible rescue vehicle (MERV) was developed for use by rescue teams. The MERV is a 6-wheeled, battery-powered unit with life support equipment and instrumentation; designed for a two-man team, with provisions for handling two victims or tools in a trailer. The vehicle is 100 inches long, 56 inches wide, and maximum height of 34 inches. It can be lowered down most mine shafts and has clearance to travel mine railways. The vehicle has power to all six wheels with power transmitted separately to either or both sets of wheels. Low-pressure, high-traction tires give the vehicle the ability to handle soft, muddy mine floors, flooded areas and significant obstacles, and can negotiate a 45% grade. Power and life support are sufficient for a 4-hour mission. The life support system is a commercially-available, approved unit currently used by MESA rescue personnel. A payout wire system provides communication between the vehicle and home base over a distance of 10,000 feet. On-board monitoring of carbon monoxide, methane and oxygen is provided, with master and individual alarms to warn of gas concentrations outside pre-set limits. A lightweight, water-tight trailer was developed for carrying victims or hauling tools and equipment.

This publication describes mining and milling methods and costs at the Madison mine of National Lead Co., St. Louis Smelting & Refining Division, in the Fredericktown district of southeast Missouri and is one of a series prepared by the Federal Bureau of Mines on methods, practices, and costs of mining and milling throughout the United States. The are bodies of the Madison mine are known for the complexity and diversity of their are minerals. Sulfides of copper, nickel, and cobalt occur in commercial quantities with lead sulfide, which is the most valuable metallic mineral in are bodies of the Bonne Terre formation in southeast Missouri. Several attempts were made by various operators to mine the complex ores and separate the sulfide minerals before 1927 when National Lead Co. became interested in the Fredericktown district. Operating then as the St. Louis Smelting & Refining Co., the company began mining and milling ores from the Madison mine in 1944 and has operated continuously since then. A recently built refinery produces copper, nickel, and cobalt metal from a concentrate containing iron sulphides and small quantities of copper, nickel, and cobalt sulphides.

Analysis of seed numbers present in topsoils (a grazed area, an ungrazed area, and two stockpiles) indicated that seeds of the most prevalent colonizers (e.g., Kochia scoparla, Setaria virdis, and Salsolo collins) were not present in the topsoil upon respreading but rather appeared by immigration from the surrounding areas. The grazed site had a seed density of over 7,700 seeds m-2 (of which 43% were from weedy species) and the ungrazed site had 3,900 seeds m-2 (of which 7% were weeds); the stockpiled topsoils had very low seed densities (255 and 520 seeds m-2). Seed densities and diversity decreased with depth on both the grazed and ungrazed sites; this was especially true on the grazed site where 94% of the seeds were found in the surface 7.5 cm. Several species were present in the seed bank (e.g., Hedeoma hispida, Artemesia ludoviciana, A. frigida, and A, abslnthlum) which were also found on the three and four year old mined sites in the aboveground vegetation survey. Seeds from these species may germinate after several years of dormancy, thereby starting populations on mined sites and enhancing plant diversity. Seed bank analysis was also undertaken on mined sites ranging in age of 2 to 6 years (plus an unmined site). Mined site seed densities ranged from 1630 to 3980 seeds m-2, with the four year old site having the greatest density (largely because of high Melilotus spp. populations); unmined site and stockpiled topsoil sample had lower seed densities. A significant positive correlation between total viable seed content and soil-water saturation percentage indicated that soil texture may influence seed viability/ dormancy (the. finer the material, the higher the seed population). As with the previous part of this study (and other studies), there was a poor correlation between the aboveground flora and the belowground seed composition.

In the western United States occurs deposits of low-grade chromite which, when concentrated, may be reduced to ferrochromiun in electric furnaces that derive energy from dams and hydro plants now in course of construction. Montana ore was chosen for the experiments. A 1-ton sample contained 26 percent Cr203, 17 percent Fed, and 17 percent SiO2, plus other constituents, and the concentrates therefrom assayed 44 -percent Cr203, 23 percent FeO, and 0,79 per cent SiO2, Gravity concentration was found to be the best method. Ferrochromiums are of two grades - high-carbon with 66 to 70 percent chromium and 4-112 to 6 percent carbon and low-carbor with 67 to 72 percent chromium and 0.6 to 2 percent carbon. Both are made in electric furnaces that use anthracite as a reducer and suit-able fluxes. The concentrates mentioned mere smelted under different conditions, and it was concluded that domestic ore could be reduced with anthracite to produce a ferrochromium of S to 10 percent carbon content at yields of 90 percent without re-treating the slag. This carbon may be lowered to required proportion with calcium and silicon, but the former requires a great excess and the latter leaves an alloy high in silicon. INTRODUCTION Chromite occurs in several regions of the United States, but the known deposits of this mineral have not been large enough or high grade enough to permit them to compete under normal conditions with imported ores. There are numerous deposits of chrome ore along the West coast. These are generally conceded to be relatively small, although some were worked during the World War. There are some indications of a revival of interest in California chromites. Montana contains large chromite deposits in Stillwater and Sweetgrass Counties. The utilization of chromite for ferrochromium and. the manufacture of stainless steels is distinctly an electrometallurgical problem; consequently, a study of methods for treatment of chromite might pave the way for the establishment of new electrometallurgical industries in the Western States. This thought is supported by the cheap power that is soon to become available from the western dams, Farther, submarginal domestic chrome deposits might thus be turned into profitable producers.

"The seventh National Safety Competition, that for 1931, conducted by the United States Bureau of Mines, was participated in by 350 mines and quarries operating in 34 States. Tables 1 to 5 show the relative standing of the various plants, Bronze trophies, known as the ""Sentinels of Safety,"" which were provided by The Explosives Engineer magazine to be awarded annually by the Bureau of Mines were awarded to five companies, each company having established the best accident—prevention record within one of the five classes into which all companies were divided — namely, anthracite mining companies, bituminous—coal mining companies, metal—mining companies, operators of nonmetallic mineral mines other than coal mines, and quarries or open—cut mines. The trophies are awarded for one year and are then transferred to the winners of the succeeding year's contest.The outstanding feature of the contest of 1931 was the operation of a bituminous coal mine without a lost—time injury to any employee. While accident—tree records had previously been made by certain quarries, metal mines, and nonmetallic mineral mines, never before has such a feat been accomplished by a bituminous coal mine in the National Safety Competition. Whether or not such a record has been made by a bituminous—coal mining company not enrolled is the competition the writer does not know, but it is believed that the case referred to is unique among large coal—mining companies. The mine to which reference is made is No. 1 mine of the Phelps Dodge Corporation, at Dawson, N. Mex. To that company belongs the distinction not only of being the first coal—mining company among those enrolled in these yearly safety contents to operate its mine without an accident but also of occasioning the 'Sentinels of Safety' trophy for a bituminous mine to take its first journey west of the Mississippi River. For the past six years the trophy has been in West Virginia, Alabama, or Pennsylvania."
