The U.S. Bureau of Mines has developed an intrinsically safe carbon monoxide (CO) monitoring system for mines by coupling a fiber-optic data telemetry (FODT) system with a prototype electro- chemical CO monitor. The CO monitoring system can be used in a coal mine as one component of an early fire warning system. This system may be used in belt haulage entries when the entries are used for supplying ventilation air to working places. The FODT accepts a 0.1- to 1.1-V analog signal from the monitor and converts it to pulses (0 to 5 V) at frequencies from 1.1 to 11 kHz that drive a light- emitting diode (LED). An electrically nonconducting fiber-optic cable carries the LED signal to a remote receiver. The receiver analyzes the incoming light signal and displays the measured CO concentration in parts per million. This report discusses the performance of the FODT system and characteristics of the CO monitor such as response times, linearity, and temperature and pressure effects.

As part of the work of serving as Chairman of Subcommittee 3, Health and Industrial Requirements, of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers' Committee on Air-Pollution Controls, the author assembled the following information on accepted maximum permissible concentrations of air pollutants from the standpoints of health, damage to vegetation, damage to property, and requirements of industrial processes. A search in technical literature was made followed by direct inquiry to all State governments as to their regulations. The subcommittee membership - G. D. A combined solvent extract ion-spectrophotometric method for the determination of as little as 1 ppm of copper in tungsten metal or tungstic oxide has been developed and evaluated. Metallic samples are converted to tungstic oxide by treatment with hydrofluoric and nitric acids. The oxide is then dissolved in sodium hydroxide, and the copper is extracted as the colored neocuproine complex. Total elapsed time for the analysis is approximately 1-1/2 days; however, actual working time for a group of six or eight determinations is less than 4 hours. Precision at the 2-ppm level is better than 0.1 ppm.

The Bureau of Mines characterized the chemical and physical properties of metallo-organic materials in petroleum to determine their effect on petroleum production and refining. The structures and physical properties of porphyrins and materials that normally contain metalloporphyrins such as crude oils and asphaltenes were investigated using elemental analysis, NMR analysis, absorption spectrometry, and small-angle X-ray scattering. Petroleum fractions greatly enriched in metalloporphyrins were obtained using asphaltene precipitation, liquid extraction, and large-scale liquid-solid chromatography. Selected fractions containing porphyrins were further purified by chromatographic methods, crystallization, and demetalation followed by chromatography. Nonporphyrin metals could not be appreciably concentrated from the bulk of the asphaltene.

"INTRODUCTION The surface areas of the finest fractions of a pulverized material are disproportionately larger than their weights. For instance, Pesrott and Kinney 3/ showed that, in a sample of minus 200-mesh coal, particles that are about 2 microns in diameter represent 15 percent of the entire surface area but only 1.5 percent of the total weight. Because the sur- face area is the dominating factor in the behavior of finely divided materials in many practical processes, the role of the finest particles is of great importance. The oxidation and combustion of pulverized coal, both in the dry form and in suspension in oils, and the hydrogenation to fluid hydrocarbons of mixtures of pulverized coal and heavy oil are reactions in which the surface area of the coal particles has considerable influence. This investigation of the size distribution of fine coal particles was conducted with the hope that such processes would thereby be better understood. The results should also be of value in the study of the crushing and fracture of coal."

Laboratory-scale tests were conducted by the Bureau of Mines on an argillaceous Michigan copper ore and mill tailing to determine the feasibility of leaching with acidified ferric sulfate solutions. The ore and tailings, containing 1.24 and 0.24 percent copper, respectively, were from the White Pine Copper Co., Ontonagon County, Mich. The investigation showed that ferric sulfate leaching of the ore and tailings followed a predictable pattern. Thus, with 4 hours of leaching, up to 58 percent of the copper in the ore was extracted, but prolonged leaching (2 to 3 weeks) was required to dissolve more than 90 percent of the copper. Similarly, about 50 percent of the copper in the mill tailings sample was dissolved in a few hours, but 8 days or more were required for extractions of over 90 percent.

A new post-disaster signalling system for the Bureau o Mines, using through-the-earth EM propagation, was successfully field-tested in the Lake Lynn test mine. Successful detection at an estimated input SNR of -30dB was accomplished using a coherent integration time of 4.46 minutes. The transmitted waveform consisted of a repeating pseudonoise maximal length sequence phase modulating a 1950Hz carrier. The receiver used a sliding-window matched filter, optimal for signal known exactly except for phase and starting time, implemented via a special purpose processor. Parallel processing permits adaptive signalling, where the detection (integration) time is determined by the actual input SNR encountered. This field test demonstrates a trapped miner detection system that is about 36dB more sensitive than a current pulsed system. This increased sensitivity permits some desired combination of increased range, shorter detection time, and reduced transmitter power or antenna-size. The combination of pulse-compression-type-signal, coherent integration, parallel-processing, and output peak-detection algorithms permit implemention of an ultra-reliable detection system. The same combination is compatible with digital Pulse Position Modulation and Emitter position location strategies.

The objective is to provide effective training on refuge chambers for underground coal miners. This training will increase knowledge about how to teach miners to operate, transport, and inspect a refuge chamber; what to expect psychologically and physiologically inside a refuge chamber; and how to decide when to use a refuge chamber. Background During 2006?2007, several disasters occurred at U.S. underground coal mines, resulting in 28 fatalities. These disasters led to new approaches to mine safety and health, as well as new federal regulations. One new technology mandated by federal legislation is the refuge chamber. Refuge chambers are movable shelters that are either made of steel or inflate from a steel skid as a tent. They can potentially save the lives of miners during an underground mine emergency by providing breathable air, food, water, and a safe environment for up to 96 hours. Because the refuge chamber is a new technology, recommendations, information, and training products are greatly needed.

The Pittsburgh Mine Map Repository of the Bureau of Mines serves as a basic reference file for the archival preservation of mine map data of mines east of the Mississippi River. About 22,000 of an estimated 500,000 available mine maps have been microfilmed A computerized index serves as the mechanism for retrieval of any microfilmed mine map. The operation, equipment, and index are described in the report.

An essential element of the Bureau of Mines electromagnetic location and communication system for trapped miners is a quantitative knowledge of the surface and above-surface electromagnetic fields created by an underground transmitter. The field solutions given in this report use approximations in which the displacement currents are negligible for low frequencies. The earth is represented by a homogeneous half-space model in which a dipole source is immersed. The vertical magnetic field equipotential contours at and above the surface are graphically mapped. The volumes of the regions bounded by these contours are directly related to the geometrical zones of signal detectability. Knowledge of the detectability zones will enable the proper search strategies to be developed for airborne detection of trapped miners.

Auxiliary equipment was assembled around a purchased oscillograph to permit observation of the current and voltage characteristics of low-energy, capacitance-discharge sparks having durations of at least 10 mµ-sec. Circuit details of the assembled apparatus, performance characteristics of the complete system, and some preliminary data from representative self-initiated sparks are given in this report. INTRODUCTION One of the subjects of continuing research by the Federal Bureau of Mines Division of Explosives Technology is the ignition of explosive-gas mixtures by means of low-energy capacitance sparks. Quite early in these investigations it was recognized that understanding the gas-ignition phenomena would be facilitated by detailed information about the performance of the ignition source (spark) under the actual conditions of interest; however, the sparks of practical interest are nonrepetitive transient phenomena whose duration could reasonably be estimated to be in the time range of 1 mµsec. to 1 µsec. As such, the only feasible method of obtaining detailed information was and is oscillographic representation of the pertinent current and voltage transients. It was not until 1947 that a suitable, commercial, dual-channel oscillograph could be obtained as the basic instrument for these studies; the instrument specified in 1947 was delivered in 1950. "The risk of developing silicosis in underground coal miners, tunnel workers and some foundry workers is well-known. These persons generally develop the classic form of the disease over a prolonged period of time. Workers involved in abrasive blasting of bridges and those polishing tombstones have been reported to develop an acute form of silicosis within a few years of commencing exposure. Not well-appreciated is the potential for development of acute silicosis among drillers at surface coal mines. We report the case of a 33-year--old man who worked primarily at surf ace drilling, developed acute silicosis within three years of beginning exposure, and who initially responded dramatically to corticosteroid therapy. CASE REPORTThe patient is a 33-year-old white man who worked as a rock driller at a quarry and also at surface coal mines in western Pennsylvania since 1975. Prior to 1983, much of his work was done with a wet process in which water was applied to reduce dust generation. After 1983 he worked primarily as a driller at a surface coal mine using a dry process. He never wore a respirator. He described the dust as being so dense that he ""couldn't see anything.- In August 1986, he presented to his local physician with a complaint of pleuritic chest pain and shortness of breath. A chest x-ray film was obtained showing only a few p and q opacities. He continued working and these symptoms subsided, but the patient noted the onset of progressive weight loss. By May 1987, he had lost approximately 50 lb. In addition, he suffered profound malaise, dyspnea, migratory chest pain and arthralgia, fevers and drenching night sweats.A course of erythromycin therapy given in the hospital resulted in only fleeting improvement. Studies for Legionella and Mycoplasma infections were negative, as was a tuberculin skin test. The patient was transferred to Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh on June 4, 1987.There was no history of serious medical illness, including tuber¬culosis. The patient admitted to smoking between I and 1 1/2 packages of cigarettes daily for 2 1/2 years prior to May 1987 when he stopped smoking. He denied intravenous drug abuse, homosexual activity or receiving transfusions of blood or blood products.On physical examination the patient was a thin, febrile white man who appeared chronically ill. Bilateral axillary and cervical lymphadenopathy was present. Chest examination showed restricted expansion and bilateral crackles. Examination of the heart and abdomen disclosed no abnormalities."

Develop computer software that can aid in improving the visibility and illumination in underground mines by providing quick analysis of existing equipment and conditions and the effects of potential modifications. Background Poor visibility and illumination are common problems in underground mining. Mining equipment often restricts operators' fields of vision. Also, fighting systems are often positioned where they cause excessive glare, which restricts the visibility around the machines even further. To help address these problems, the U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) has developed a PC-based software package to analyze certain human engineering aspects (ergonomics) of mining equipment design. The software is available for use by equipment manufacturers and mining companies for design work on new machines, as well as for evaluating proposed modifications to existing machines. Approach The Crewstation Analysis Programs (CAP) package includes assessments of visibility, illumination, and glare in the surrounding work area. The advantage of using computers for these types of analyses is that numerous design iterations can be tested quickly and efficiently to determine the effects of changes on visibility. This cuts down the need for expensive testing using physical mockups. Another advantage is that design ideas can be tested in situations where testing would not normally be possible. For instance, the effects of modifications to a lighting system or canopy design could be tested while the machine remained in service.

A small, special-purpose centrifugal compressor was developed to circulate 60 pounds per hour of helium at 1,000° F and 250 psig because standard, commercial units were not available. Performance characteristics of this compressor were determined at helium flows of 2,000 to 18,000 std cu ft per hour, pressures of 100 to 250 psig, and temperatures of 100° to 1,000° F. This range is 2 to 90 actual cu ft per minute. Several graphs show the adiabatic head developed by the compressor over this wide flow range at various combinations of temperature and pressure. A compressor performance map relates pressure ratio to mass flow, temperature, pressure, and speed. This map can be used to accurately predict compressor performance factors within the range of operating conditions covered by the experiments.

The Federal Bureau of Mines has studied solvent extraction as a means of concentrating the mineral components in coal. Solubilities of a number of American coals were determined using abietic acid as a solvent. The effect of rank on solubility was investigated, and maximum solubility was found with coals of intermediate rank. Vitrinite is the most soluble petrographic component; fusinite, micrinitc, and exinite are nearly insoluble. Spore exines also have a low solubility. Abietic acid is a hydrogen donor and reduces pyrite to ferrous sulfide. Mild hydrogenation of high-molecular-weight fragments of the coal structure to those of lower molecular-weight probably contributes to the solvent action. Even where solubility of the coal substance exceeds 90 percent, contamination of the mineral matter with coal makes identification of the mineral components difficult. Further separation might be possible by the application of float and sink techniques to the residue. INTRODUCTION Work n the solvent extraction of coal is conducted to recover commercially useful products and to characterize coal;. and obtain information on their structure. Some coals, particularly those of low rank, contain waxes, resins, and humic acids which can be removed by solvent extraction and find varied industrial uses. In World War II, solvent extraction of coal was conducted on a commercial scale in Germany to obtain a low-ash feed material for hydrogenation and to produce electrodes carbon for the aluminum industry.4 5/

"Abstract — Concentrations of tailpipe pollutants from diesel-powered. underground mine vehicles change over time due to engine wear and the need for maintenance. Since this deterioration in pollutant emissions may adversely affect the air quality in an underground mine, it should be monitored and controlled. This paper presents decision criteria concerning when to service a mine vehicle diesel engine. These criteria, based on mine air and tailpipe concentration measurements, are designed to maintain the tailpipe concentrations within limits that assure satisfactory mine air quality.Application of the deterioration criteria to mine vehicle emissions involves:establishing, for each pollutant, the allowable deterioration factor, anddetermining the deterioration factor, from the mine air and tailpipe diesel pollutant measurements, and the mine air threshold limit values (TLVs).If the deterioration factor is greater than or equal to the allowable deterioration factor the vehicle is removed from service for maintenance.An analysis applying the criteria to measurements made in an underground coal mine is presented. The tailpipe pollutant concentration data were collected using the Emissions Mea-surement Apparatus (EMA) developed by Michigan Techno-logical University. Since the TLV for diesel particulate matter (DPM) has not yet been established assumed mine air DPMTLVs of 15 and 1.0 mg/m3 were used in the analysis. For all of the diesel haulage vehicles included in the analysis. DPM was found to be the critical pollutant (the one most in need of control). For an assumed mine air DPM TLV of 15 mg/m3 none of the diesel haulage vehicles would he removed from service. However reducing the DPM TLV to 1.0 mg/m3 would make it necessary to remove two of the three vehicles tested from service."

The first phase of our work for PMSRC on this contract was devoted to a comprehensive and in-depth assessment of electromagnetic (EM) noise measurements and data taken by several contractors for use in the design of operational and emergency mine communications. Pertinent measurements and data of other selected investigators were also included in the evaluation. This assessment treated the measurements and instrumentation used, the data analysis and presentation methods, and the utility of the final results. This phase concluded with the identification of the most useful results and methods, the remaining data gaps, the contractor most qualified to fill these data gaps, and the definition (with PMSRC and this contractor - NBS, National Bureau of Standards) of a follow-on noise measurement program, instrumentation system, and data processing methods tailored to obtain the necessary but missing noise data. A partial bibliography of references related to electromagnetic and seismic noise and propagation in the frequency bands of interest was also compiled during this first phase. The body of this Part of the final report presents a summary of the findings of our EM noise assessment, together with detailed recommendations regarding the new noise measurements to be taken and the instrumentation and data processing methods to be used. This work was done during the latter part of 1971 and the early part of 1972. During subsequent phases of the contract ADL was asked to perform on-going evaluations of the continuing program of electromagnetic (EM) noise and propagation measurements made by Bureau contractors, and to utilize pertinent data from these measurements to make performance estimates for

The heat of combustion of TaC0.996 was determined by oxygen bomb calorimetry to be -302.8 ±0.4 kcal/mole. The corresponding heat of formation of TaC0.996 is -35.4 ±0.5 kcal/mole, and the calculated heat of formation of TaC1.00 is -35.5 ±0.5 kcal/mole.

"The United States Bureau of Mines, in cooperation with the Natural Gas Department of the American Gas Association, has been studying actively for the past several years the flow of natural as through high-pressure pipe lines. 4 This report deals with that part of the study involving the design of pipe-line systems consisting of lines laid parallel to each other. The lines are referred to as the original line and the parallel line. The paralleling lire may or may not extend the entire length &f the original line; however, the parallel line is connected at its two ends to the original line.As a result of the large expansion of the natural-gas industry almost all markets within economic distance, from the developed as fields have at least one pipe line supplying them with natural gas. Small increases in the consumers' demand for natural-gas can be met usually by increasing operating pressures, but any marked increase in demand necessitates paralleling sections of the existing systems. It is believed that to a large extent future expansion in the natural—gas industry will consist of paralleling the present lines. The several formulas given in this report have been developed to aid in the design of such systems. Curves and tables were prepared from these formulas to simplify the calculations materially and to facilitate determination of the sizes of pine to be used in paralleling various diameter lines to give the most economical design. The formulas are presented without detailed derivations, as a complete report on the flow of natural gas through pipe lines is being prepared which will contain the derivations of these formulas. Examples included here show the detail of application of the several formulas to problems of design of parallel lines."

Total yield and backscattered electron coefficients were measured in this Bureau of Mines study in an microanalyzer as a function of atomic number and of primary crier: ;y in the 15- to 35-kilovolt range. The electron coefficients were obtained indirectly from measurements of the specimen electron current and the primary beam current collected in a Faraday cage and were measured with a precision better than 0.5 percent. Secondary electron emission was suppressed with opposing potential applied to a screen grid surrounding the specimen. The values of the backscattered electron coefficients agreed with published values within 5 percent.
