A study was conducted by the Bureau of Mines to provide quarry operators with information regarding (1) the effects of jointing and bedding on rock fragmentation when bench blasting in two small-scale (2.5-ft) limestone benches, and (2) the successful use of inexpensive equipment and field techniques to determine the orientation and spacing of joints and bedding separations within the quarry. Using inexpensive equipment, such as a pocket transit and steel and paper tapes, joint and bedding separations were mapped and their frequencies measured. Results from two small-scale bench blasts in the Stewartville member of the Galena limestone formation showed that when the row of vertical blast-holes was oblique to the vertical joint orientations, the backface expression was outlined by two relatively large triangular protrusions (joint surfaces). In this blast, part of the rock burden was unbroken. When the line of vertical blastholes paralleled a predominant joint set, all of the rock burden was broken and displaced. The thickness of fragments that had been displaced by a blast correlated with the observed bedding thickness in the bench.

A quick, safe, and effective method has been developed that allows workers to clean their dust laden work clothing periodically throughout the day. For the mining industry, this technique is much more effective than the current federally approved method of using a vacuuming system. This newly designed method is relatively inexpensive and can be easily installed at any operation to allow workers to clean their clothing without contaminating the worker, the work environment. or co-workers to elevated respirable dust levels. This clothes cleaning process uses an air spray manifold to blow dust from a worker's clothing in an enclosed booth, which combines the dust for capture and removal by a baghouse dust collector. Since the air exhausted by the dust collector causes the booth to be under negative pressure. no measurable quantities of dust were ever measure escaping from the booth to contaminate the work environment and/or other workers. The worker performing the cleaning process is required to wear a half-mask fit- tested respirator with an N 100 filter, hearing protection, and full seal goggles. Dust samples taken inside the respirator of test personnel performing the clothes cleaning process showed very minimal to no respirable dust. This clothes cleaning process was performed in less than 20 seconds and was significantly y cleaner than either the Federally approved method of vacuuming, or the most common method or using a single compressed air hose. It was also determined during this research that polyester-cotton blend coveralls clean more effectively than coveralls which are 100 percent cotton. The newly designed clothes cleaning process has potential application to any industry where workers' clothing becomes contaminated with most any type of dust or product.

The danger from coal dust in mines has been thoroughly demon- strated by experiment, and consequently the study of the inflam- mability of coal dust suspended in air, that is, the readiness with which a cloud of coal dust inflames, is of decided importance to those engaged in coal mining. Much knowledge has been gained from the work done in the large galleries constructed at official and semiofficial stations in this country and abroad, but the study of the coal-dust problem in these galleries requires so much time and is so costly that there is need of a reliable laboratory method for obtaining a classi- fication of the great variety of dusts that occur in mines. The investigation described in this paper was an attempt to devise such a method. It was a preliminary investigation, and work in the same direction is being continued by the Bureau of Mines. As Mr. Frazer has severed his connection with the bureau, it is deemed advisable to publish the results of his study substantially as he prepared them, with little attempt to draw conclusions or to show the bearing of the results on other studies now in progress. The results of these studies and a full discussion of the significance of the laboratory investiga- tions will be published in future reports of the Bureau of Mines. The reader should remember that any laboratory method, since it involves conditions that differ so greatly from those of actual mining, should be thoroughly tested, and the results obtained by it should be confirmed by experiments conducted on a scale simulating mining conditions before final conclusions are drawn. The need of a laboratory method has long been felt, and several investigators have devised apparatus and methods. The work done by Vital, Holtzwart and Von Meyer, Bedson and Widdas, Le Chate- lier, and that of the British Coal Dust Commission is of great interest in this connection. In accidents resulting from the use of explosives in metal mines and quarries in the United States more than 130 men were killed and 250 seriously injured during the calendar year 1913. More- over, an unknown number of miners suffered from the effects of breathing the harmful fumes and gases given off by the burning or the incomplete explosion of some explosive. Consequently, the Fed- eral Bureau of Mines, which is endeavoring to increase safety in mines and to abolish conditions that tend to impair the health of miners, is studying the kinds of explosives used in mining and the conditions under which these explosives can be used with least danger to the miner. Information about the different explosives used in coal mining and the precautions to be taken in using those explosives has been printed in Bulletin 17 and other bureau reports, the names of which may be found at the end of this bulletin. The bureau has not been able to give much attention to explosives used in metal mines and quarries, but has published some information about these explosives in Bulletin 48, "The Selection of Explosives Used in Engineering and Mining Operations"; Technical Paper 17, "The Effect of Stemming on the Efficiency of Explosives"; and Miners' Circular 19, "The Prevention of Accidents from Explosives in Metal Mining." This bulletin aims to give the metal miner and the quarryman information similar to that given the coal miner in Bulletin 17. In- flammable gas or dust is seldom, if ever, found in quarries or metal mines, and the danger from using explosives there is less than in coal mines; but, as the figures show, the number of men killed and injured yearly in accidents caused by explosives proves the need of both miners and mine officials striving to see that none but proper explosives are used and that these are used properly.

Estimates are given for the distance from a seismometer at which a miner can probably be detected. The procedure in making these estimates was to first establish the natural noise levels at the output of a surface seismometer for the 25 to 100 Hz frequency passband. The noise levels give the range of values which may be expected in areas with no man-made noise. For each noise level, we give the detection threshold which, when exceeded, indicates that a signal has been received. Based on the signals recorded by Westinghouse, curves are given which show the peak signal amplitude as a function of source- to-receiver distance (slant range). Curves are given for the Westinghouse seismic thumper, a 50-pound timber, and a sledge. For a given type of source, the receive signal strength depends more strongly on slant range than on any other factor. However, there is approximately a five-to-one scatter in the amplitudes. Thus, further study of factors affecting the signal amplitude might allow better estimates to be made for any particular geological setting. Combining the signal amplitude with the detection thresholds for the different noise conditions gives the distances at which a miner should be detected. These are given in Table l* below. [ ] The text also gives the increase in detection ranges which should occur if steps are taken to increase S/N by 10 dB. We feel that 10 dB is a conservative estimate of the improvement possible. "Using propidium assay and flow cytometry, we examined how silica exerts its toxicity toward phagocytic cells employing the human neutrophil as a model. This toxicity appears to be associated with calcium bound to silica. Once the silica with calcium is phagocytized, the extra calcium causes the death of the cell. Using ""Ca we found that 6 to 10% of millimolar calcium is bound to milligram amounts of respirable-sized silica (diameter of 5 µ.m or less) at physiological pH. If the silica particles arc coated with an organosilanc (Prosil 28). calcium binding is decreased by 60% as is cell death. Pretreating with INDO IAM (a chelator of intracellular calcium) reduces the cellular death by 80%. Nonfibrogcnic particles- polystyrene beads or coal dust-produced 10% or less cell death in a 4-h period. Silica with no added, external calcium appears to exert toxicity to neutrophils; however, pretreating cells with EDT A decreases cellular death to the level of nonfibrogcnic particles. Chronic toxicity with silica-calcium appears similar to the chronic toxicity in gout where particles cause a cycle of inflammation. c 1993 Academic Press, Inc.Silicosis is an occupational disease caused by the inhalation of fine particles of silica, usually between 0.1 and 5 µ.m in diameter (1). A recent hypothesis explaining silica's toxicity suggested that surface free radicals caused damage to cells (2). This explanation appears doubtful, however, since the addition of silica to water, such as that found in biological systems, quenches free radicals; also, such a hypothesis does not provide basis for a persistent inflammatory pattern that lasts for years. Kane et al. (3) proposed that silica's toxicity resulted from an excessive concentration of calcium ions within the phagocytic cell (macrophages). However, the mechanism that was capable of linking silica to an excess of intracellular, ionic calcium was not explained. The surface of silica is certainly involved because covering the surface with polymers or phospholipids decreases silica's toxicity (4-6).When silica is engulfed by macrophages platelet activating factor and leukotrienes are produced (7, 8). This is the same inflammatory pattern produced by phagocytic cells exposed to the calcium ionophore A23187 and ionic calcium. How could silica be acting like A23187? Perhaps calcium binds to silica extracellulary and then is released intracellulary following phagocytosis; the latter process, in a sense a ""piggy back"" process, would permit activation of inflammation and cell death mechanisms."

"This paper is based on the development of the Maza-Austin technique for characterizing thousands of coal particles by approximate analysis of the major inorganic constituents Ca, Al, Si, K, Na, Fe and S in each particle. The technique has sufficient sensitivity to work on small volumes, is fast enough to handle large number of particles within a reasonable period of time, and consists of scanning electron microscopy combined with energy dispersive x-ray spectrometry (SEK-EDS). A computerized SEK-EDS system that allows the automated analysis of hundreds of coal particles per hour' is described. The analysis is based on the location and tracing of coal particles embedded in a polished specimen, the selection of sampling points on the traced particles, the collection of an x-ray spectrum from each sampled point for a defined period of time, and the processing of the x-ray intensity to calculate point composition using ZAF corrections. Procedures for correcting for dead time, background, detector efficiency and spectrum overlap are described. These corrections are essential if reasonably accurate analyses are to be obtained from unknown complex mixtures of the elements in a coal or fly ash particle. Examples are given. INTRODUCTION Coal is a complex mixture of organic and inorganic materials. The inorganic fraction is referred to as mineral matter (Gluskoter, 1978) but can occur in three modes: (i) an observable mineral species; (ii) as cations held by ion exchange to carboxylic groups; and (iii) in chelate complexes. The mineral matter content normally represents a significant proportion of a coal, with an average value of about 15% for US coals (Gluskoter, 1975). The standard methods of analysis of the mineral matter in coals are performed on a sample selected to represent the whole coal as closely as possible, and give the overall inorganic composition in the coal. Such analyses are of limited use for solving problems originating from the behavior of individual coal particles, whose compositions vary widely from the average value. This is particularly true in pulverized coal combustion, where the current methods of predicting the slagging and ·fouling potential of a coal are based on the bulk ash composition, but the fly ash particles which create the deposits originate from coal particles with large differences in mineral compo1ition. Some examples can be found where, in a comparison between two coals, the one with the smaller slagging potential according to the mean ash composition was the one that behaved worst in the furnace (Moza et al., 1980; Koza and Austin, 1983). The u1e of gravity fractionation to assess the slagging potential of pulverized coals has shown that conventional ASTM analysis is not sensitive to differences in the distribution of mineral matter when comparing coals (Borio and Narciso, 1979). Bryer (1979) concluded that coals should be examined for fouling and slagging potential by analyzing gravimetric and size-fractionated coal, preferably pulverized· and ground to the size expected at the mill outlet."

The linear expansion of high-purity oxides of yttrium, cerium, samarium, europium, and dysprosium was determined by the interferometric method for the temperature range 25° to 1,000° C. Single-crystal magnesium oxide and single-crystal aluminum oxide were used as reference materials. The bulk density and crystal form of the nonreference materials also were determined. The coefficients of linear expansion in the range 25° to 1,000° C were found to be 8.10 x 10-6 for yttria, 12.10 x 10-6 for ceria, 10.81 x 10'6 for samaria (monoclinic), 10.35 x 10-6 for europia (monoclinic), and 8.13 x 10-6 for dysprosia, each given in centimeters per centimeter per degree Centigrade. A detailed investigation of the interferometric technique for measuring thermal expansion in this temperature range was made. The interferometer was found to be a precise tool but only when adequate precautions were taken. These precautions are described.

The New York State Department of Transportation recently commenced highway widening and drainage improvement projects in Clarence and Amherst, NY. Drainage improvements including the installation of storm sewer lines required excavation to a depth of 2.5 m (8.2 ft). In September 2002, NYSDOT stopped further blasting when 800 ppm CO was detected in the basement of a house near the blasting site. At the insistence of NYSDOT, the general contractor developed a new blast plan with the assistance of an environmental consultant. The plan provided for the installation of multi-gas monitors in buildings of special concern and/or with basements and residential type CO monitors in all other buildings within 100m (330 ft) of the blast. The multi-gas monitors would be remotely monitored. The plan provided action levels which would ensure public safety. The blast design was also modified to allow for better venting of CO. Blasts were limited to 20 ft lengths. The overburden was to be removed from the rock and blasting mats put in place to prevent flyrock. Approximately twenty feet of trench adjacent to the blast was left open to allow ground movement and gas release. The use of CO monitors was effective to alert occupants of a building to the presence of CO. The most effective appeared to be the residential type CO alarms with digital readouts. They were simple and easy to use and allowed the public to participate in the process. False alarms were repeatedly received with the more sophisticated instrumentation. Residential type CO monitors are preferable to warn people near blast sites. More sophisticated instrumentation should be avoided unless personnel are experienced in its use. A general overview of the blasting and monitoring is presented and discussed. The use and effectiveness of residential type CO monitors and multi-gas monitors are discussed.

Three types of communication systems have become popular in solving communication requirements underground: Loud-speaking pager phones, carrier current phones, and magneto ringing phones. Basically, all three are simply single-channel party line systems. Although these systems are quite reliable, the single channel creates a variety of problems. For example- 1. Since no call is confidential, messages are sometimes purposely made vague, especially if accidents or safety topics are being discussed. 2. A potential user must literally "wait in line" until the channel becomes clear for his use; thus, when foremen have to wait to call in reports or supply requests, this single chan-nel creates a serious productivity bottleneck. 3. In many large mines, there are independent branch lines that must be tied together by a dispatcher, adding further delays to the system. To solve these problems, some mines have installed other phone systems-mostly commercial dial phones in industrial enclosures that offer extra channel capacity and private line features. Others have installed a system that combines both dial- and page-phone features in a single unit. Although these do represent improvements, they do not truly solve the overall problems that face modern mines. Besides extra channels, a communication system should have the following features to enhance productivity and safety: 1. A means of paging a roving miner to alert him that he is wanted on the phone. 2. Wireless-to-wired system interconnects by which a miner can talk on the wired phone system by using a remote portable radio. 3. Remote monitors that alert personnel when there is a toxic or explosive gas buildup. 4. Control interfaces that allow remote control of fans, pumps, or other devices. 5. Transmitters and receivers that can serve as emergency links. 6. Loopback that allows an alternate path of communications if the main path is cut. This chapter focuses on equipment and methods to meet the special communication needs of individuals in various places of the underground mine. The communication requirements can be broken down into four categories: 1. The mine entrance (shaft communication). 2. Permanent and semipermanent locations (shop areas, lunchroom, crusher stations, etc.). 3. Mining areas (the room-and-pillar sections, longwall faces, block caving areas, etc.). 4. Haulageways (tracked trolley haulage, diesel, belt haulage). Methods of implementing systems to meet the communication needs of these areas are described in sections 3.2 through 3.5. Section 3.6 discusses methods of satisfying special communication requirements that exist. Major topics in this category include communications with roving personnel, the isolated miner, and motorman-to-snapper communications. "The acOustic impedances of seven rat lungs were measured at frequencies between 100 and 6400 Hz. Rats were divided into two groups: a silica exposed group (N=3) and a control group (N=4). The silica exposed group was injected intratracheally with silica solution. Three of the control group were intratracheallyinjected with saline. Between four and six weeks after theinjections, all lungs were excised and degassed. Lungs were,suspended in a pressure Chamber, with the trachea canula attached to the end Of a tapered impedance tube. The lungs were subjected to transpulmonary pressures between -30 cm H2O and 6 cm H2O to simulate deflation and inflation. With transpulmonary pressure being held constant, the impedance tube was excited with random noise. A dual channel analyzer calculated H12(f), the transfer function between the two microphones. This function was used to calculate the lung's impedance at that pressure. The impedance magnitude spectra of both groups typically had peaks at 2000,3500, and 5500 Hz. Statistically significant differences. (90%confidence level or greater) between the two groups occur at the 3500 Hz peak at transpulmonary pressures of 20, 8, 6, 4, and 2 cm of H2O. This fact seems to confirm that this method can detect. lung disease. Further research will indicate whether this method will be able to detect the onset Of coal worker's pneumoconiosis.INTRODUCTIONOne of the first studies of impedance Of the human lung were conducted by DuBois et al.[2] using the forced OscillatiOn technique. This technique, however, was limited to frequencies below 30 Hz. Further studies by Van Den Berg [6] revealed thatthe lung reflected higher frequency sounds (100-10,000 Hz), instead Of behaving as an anechoic termination. This discovery has lead to several studies of the acoustical properties of both human and animal lungs at high frequencies [3,4,5]."

Measurements were made of the flow of helium, methane, ethane, butane, and toluene through thin disks of coal. All measurements were made on a dense layer in the Pittsburgh seam identified as attritus. Flow increased with pressure differential and temperature. At room temperature and a pressure differential of 1 atmosphere flow rates along the bedding plane of Pittsburgh seam coal were helium 881 X 10-10 cm2 sec-1, methane 1.2 X 10 -10 cm2 sec-1, ethane 0.54 X 10-10 cm 2 sec-1, n-butane 0.35 X 10-10 cm2sec-1, and toluene 3.8 X 10-10 cm2sec-1. Flow rates were 50 percent lower across the bedding plane of the coal than along the bedding plane. Activation energies were 3.9 kcal mole-1 for helium and 13.6 kcal mole-1 for methane, with diffusion measured either along or across the bedding plane.

Carbon monoxide (CO) sensors are used in mine fire early-warning systems. Experiments were conducted by the U.S. Bureau of Mines with six diffusion-type CO sensors to determine their response to a reference CO concentration under both static and dynamic flow conditions. Static experiments were conducted with 0.5 L/min flow of 16 ppm CO in N2 through 8-and 12-L chambers. Dynamic flow experiments were conducted in two environmental chambers: One had directional flow capability of 1 m/s, and the second provided moderately nondirectional flow as high as 1.8 m/s. Reference CO concentrations of 13.5 to 19 ppm in air were used for the dynamic experiments. The results of the static experiments demonstrated that the sensors consistently underestimated the reference gas concentration. The dynamic experiment results showed the sensors provided reasonable agreement with the reference gas concentration when directional flow effects were not considered. Directional flow effects were evaluated for two sensors. One of the sensors showed a strong dependence upon the relative orientation of the diffusion tube with respect to flow direction. The second sensor did not show a dependence upon flow direction. The sensors' directional flow effect is significant for their proper in-mine utilization.

A critical study of the wet Thiogen process for extracting sulphur from the smoke of smelters is one of several investigations related to the general smelter-smoke problem that are being conducted under the direction of the Bureau of Mines. Part of the work done in the pyrometallurgical section of the cooperative metallurgical exhibit of the Bureau of Mines at the Panama-Pacific International Exposition during 1915 related to this investigation, and at the expiration of the exposition, the work was continued in the labora- tories of the Bureau of Mines in the Hearst Memorial Mining Building of the University of California, Berkeley, Cal., where a mining experiment station of the bureau has been established under the cooperative agreement with the University of California. Early in the spring of 1915, when plans were being made to co- operate with several metallurgical interests, the Thiogen Co. proposed to the Bureau of Mines that, along with the studies of various pro- posed methods for eliminating sulphur dioxide from smelter smoke, there should be included a study of the wet Thiogen process. In the study as outlined it was proposed to determine whether it would be technically and commercially feasible to use the, process for the recovery of elemental sulphur from the sulphur dioxide in waste smelter gases. Although there had been no large-scale work with the process, either in the laboratory or at a smelter, representatives of the metallur- gical and mining industry had shown considerable interest in the proposed method, and the desire had been expressed that a better knowledge of the possibilities of the process should be obtained. Thus, cooperation with the Thiogen Co. seemed justified by the in- terests of the metallurgical industry, and by the conservation promised by the recovery of a product of market value from what is otherwise a waste, and in some instances a serious nuisance. In accepting the responsibility for directing this investigation, the officials of the Bureau of Mines were necessarily free to conduct the work in the manner they considered necessary to determine the facts. It was also understood that any information obtained was to be made available to all who might be interested and might be printed in a Bureau of Mines report. To cover the cost of laboratory equipment and supplies, and the payment of salaries of assistants, other than Bureau of Mines employees, the Thiogen Co. in May, 1915, deposited with the cooperative metallurgical exhibit fund a sum considered sufficient to warrant starting the laboratory investi- gation. The origin and organization of this fund has been described by Clevenger and the author." In outlining the program for this investigation it was hoped that ultimately a small complete plant would be erected and the investi- gation center around the operation of the plant. However, pre- liminary to the erection of the plant, a laboratory study of the proc- ess was considered necessary, as the technical features of the process could be determined, it was believed, as satisfactorily on a smaller scale as on the scale first proposed. However, it was realized at the time that it would not be possible to determine so satisfactorily or definitely the commercial possibilities of the process on the scale of work adopted as in the larger operating plant. With this fact in mind it was planned that, if the study of the technical features on a laboratory scale gave sufficient promise of the process being commer- cially feasible, an operating unit should, if possible, be constructed later, and that more definite information concerning the commercial prospects should be determined. The investigations were started in June, 1915. In June and July work was confined entirely to small-scale laboratory tests, in which a careful study of the chemical reactions involved was made. In August, tests on a larger scale were started, and these were con- tinued until December, small-scale tests being made at the same time. On December 1, 1915, all work on the Thiogen process was discon- tinued temporarily, as the close of the exposition necessitated moving the laboratories. Work on the Thiogen process was started again in January, 1916, in the laboratories of the new mining experiment sta- tion at Berkeley, Cal., and was continued during the spring of 1916 until a point was reached where it was felt that the essential parts of the process had been carefully covered, and that some definite state- ments concerning the technical features and possibilities of the process, as given in this report, were warranted.

The Bureau of Mines investigated factors that influence the formation of methane and other hydrocarbon gases in coal, which is an integral part of the coalification process. Coalification begins with a biogenetic stage in which plant debris decomposes and peat is formed; methane and CO2 are the predominant gases produced during this stage. During the diagenetic stage of coalification hydrogen and the hydrocarbon gases methane, ethane, ethylene, propane, propylene, butene, iso-and normal butane, and pentane are formed by dissociation of the organic material. Methane may also be produced by a secondary reaction of hydrogen with unsaturates or by the reduction of CO2. The gas contained in coalbeds is a mixture of methane, C2 through C5 alkanes, CO2, O2, N2, H2, and He; its heating value is equivalent to that of natural gas. The gas content of coal depends on many variables, but an empirical relationship between adsorptive capacity, rank, and depth has been observed.

The Bureau of Mines investigated the precipitation strengthening of lead¬-base alloys containing 0.5 through 4 weight-percent combined Cd plus Sb. The Cd and Sb were alloyed in a 1-to-1 atomic ratio which maintained compositions along the quasi-binary section Pb-CdSb. Tensile properties, creep rates, and stress-rupture values were obtained on alloys in the aged condition. The highest tensile strength was observed in an alloy of Pb-3 CdSb, After aging for 6 months at 90°±3° F, this alloy had a mean tensile strength of 8,950 psi with 15-percent elongation. An aged alloy of Pb-1 CdSb exhibited a steady state creep rate of 1.2 X 10-3 percent per day at a stress of 500 psi and a temperature of 90°±3° F. Times to rupture at stresses up to 4,000 psi and at a temperature of 90°±3° F were obtained for some compositions.

Deposits of talc are known in many districts in Canada but at the present time active mining operations are reported only in Ontario . Here three companies are now operating, two of which, George H. Gillespie & Co. , Ltd. , and the Anglo- American Talc Co. , are at Madoc . The operations of the former company are probably the largest and best known in Canada . The writer , in his capacity as an engineer of the U. S. Bureau of Mines , was permitted by this company to make an inspection of its mine and mill in June, 1920 , and study the methods employed . This information was desired for comparison with methods employed in the United States . The following description is based on observation made during this visit , supplemented by data supplied by the company .

The Bureau of Mines has conducted a rock mechanics study to monitor deformation of near-seam strata above a longwall panel in the Pittsburgh Coalbed. The primary goal was to determine the height of caving immediately behind advancing longwall face supports. This study, although site specific, provides information on the caving mechanism associated with longwall extractions so that strata behavior and its interaction with longwall face supports can be better understood. Two holes were drilled, approximately 550 ft apart along the center line of a longwall panel, from the surface to the coalbed approximately 650 ft below. Various downhole geotechnical instruments were used to monitor strata deformation. In addition, surface elevation surveys were conducted to differentiate between surface and subsurface activity. This report discusses the caving characteristics of the strata as the longwall panel approached and passed beneath the boreholes. Physical property data are also presented to demonstrate the relationship between caving behavior and local geology. Data show that immediate caving of strata above the longwall face occurred at a height less than 23.5 ft and that strata behavior above longwall extractions is highly dependent upon lithology, with major disturbances occurring at weak lithologic zones.

Bureau of Mines research to recover arsenic from mining industry waste material and process streams is reported. Batch and column approaches were investigated for adsorbing arsenic from acid leach solutions and ion-exchange eluate solutions with hydrated titanium dioxide granules. A method for producing hydrated titanium dioxide granules was devised to provide material suitable for use in a packed adsorption tower. Selective adsorption of arsenic from acidic leach solutions was achieved. The loading capacity of arsenic on the granules was 14 wt-pct when synthetic solutions were used, but lower when actual leach solutions were used. Other elements in the leach solution were Zn, Cd, and In. The granules were used in an attempt to lower the arsenic content in a solution containing 0.95 g/l W and 0.027 g/l As from a process devised by the Bureau of Mines to treat Searles Lake brine. The arsenic content was lowered to less than 0.001 g/l, but unacceptable amounts of tungsten also were adsorbed by the granules. Adsorbed tungsten was partially stripped with pH 11.5 NaOH, and both tungsten and arsenic were completely stripped with 5M NaOH solution. Repeated loading and stripping of the granules had no effect on the loading capacity for arsenic.
