"The use of such methods and apparatus as the Dautriche method and the Mettegang recorder for the determination of the rate of burning of black blasting powder and other strictly burning explosives has been found to give such erratic results that no reliance can be placed on the data thus obtained. Consequently, investigators of those factors which may affect the burning rate, such as size of grain, absolute density, chemical composition, and means of ignition have had to rely mainly on observations made during practical use for determination of the part played by each. Such tests are very difficult of interpretation.The purpose of this paper is to describe a method used by the explosives division of the Bureau of Mines for the investigation of such explosives and to present the results of an investigation using that method.The investigation was concerned with the effect of grain size, initial pressure, and means of ignition on the rate of burning or rate of pressure development of black blasting powder as compared with pellet powder.The Bichel pressure gauge was used for these tests, with the slight modification to the apparatus and method described in U. S. Bureau of Mines Bulletin 15.4 These modifications consisted of reducing the speed of the revolving drum on which the time-pressure record is taken, measuring the speed of the drum by a belt-driven tachometer, and introducing an induction coil in series with the electric squib or electric detonator to mark on the time pressure record the instant at which the squib or detonator was fired."

The rate of oxidation of coals with nitric acid has been used by earlier investigators4 5 6/ for determining fusain and for studying petrographic composition. These workers accumulated considerable evidence indicating that, for coals ranging from lignite to low-volatile in rank, the method gives values for fusain that agree satisfactorily with those obtained by optical methods. One group5/even concluded that, when discrepancies are noted between results obtained by chemical and microscopic methods, the results based on the oxidation reaction are probably the more reliable. Unfortunately, after concluding that the method was valid, most of these workers apparently lost interest. As a result, no attempt to exploit or apply the method to problems of utilization has been reported. Recent studies of the influence of inert petrographic constituents on the properties of cokes made from various coals7/ have indicated a need for additional means of characterizing coals and blends used for carbonization.

Coal mine ventilation systems are often subject to high leakage rates. As a result, changes in airflow resistance will strongly affect the efficiency with which air is delivered to the working place. One major source of airflow resistance is the line brattice used to direct air from the last open crosscut to the working face. Because it is a great distance from the fan, the resistance of the line brattice can result in more overall leakage than an equivalent resistance closer to the fan. Substituting auxiliary fans for brattice eliminates this source of resistance, with improvements in system efficiency and cost. Also, in some mines, the leakage that leads to spontaneous combustion can be reduced. The benefits obtained by several different brattice and fan substitutions have been studied by Mine Ventilation Services, Inc., Lafayette, CA, under contract to the U.S. Bureau of Mines. Changes in main fan duty were compared with additional costs associated with auxiliary fans. Results indicate that in some circumstances, considerable leakage reductions and cost savings are possible.

"The economic features of coal mining must take into account the drain on the man power. Study over a recent 5-year period reveals an average yearly loss of 2,125 underground men, of whom 1,182 are killed by falls of roof and coal, and according to recent data compiled by the Bureau of Mines it is estimated that 54,000 men sustain lost—time disabling injuries from the same cause.Under normal activity of the mines approximately 50 lives are taken by falls of roof during every 10 days the mines are operated, or 5 persons are killed per day, which, at a compensation charge of $5,000 each, amounts to $25,000 per day. Add to this the similar number killed by causes other than by falls of roof and we have $50,000 as an approximate daily fatality charge for each day the mines operate. On the basis of 200 working days per year, this amounts to the alarming figure of $10,000,000 annually. An investment at 5 per cent to yield this amount would require $200,000,000, which is equivalent to a capital investment of $0.40 per ton of coal, produced annually, on the basis of 500 million tons. These figures apply only to fatalities for which a fixed or stated amount is paid for compensation and do not include the compensation and hospitalization paid for the approximately 103,000 upon whom idleness is enforced by a lost-time disability injury. In one State having an annual production equal to approximately 30 per cent of the total bituminous production of the United States, the most recent data shows that for each fatality there are eight serious injuries causing 60 days or more lost time. The frequency rate of accidents for that State is less than the average for the United States, and so a conservative comparison may be made by using the figures of that State in estimating the total serious injuries, which gives 16,000 as losing 60 days or more. The average number of underground employees in the coal mines of the United States for the past 10 years has been approximately 570,000; the annual underground fatalities amount to approximately 2,000 and non-fatalities to 108,000, or a total of 110,000, which means that one out of every 5.17 employees ,or 19.3 per cent, receives an injury which results in either a fatality or a lost-time disability; this figure in a little over five years will reach a number equivalent to 100 per cent of all underground workmen. Against this is the record of many miners who have worked 25 years or more without a lost—time disability injury, indicating that coal mining is not necessarily productive of injury or death to workers.In the matter of falls of roof, it is found that 85 to 87 per cent of all fatalities occur at the working face, face of a room or entry, or in pillar work. It is at the working face that the greatest roof hazards are encountered, and when about 75 per cent of the underground employees spend approximately 90 per cent of their working hours at the face, it is logical that there is where injury is most likely to occur.Although the roof hazards may vary in different beds of coal, experience has proved that roof hazards can be successfully controlled in all coal mines, essentially regardless of the character of the roof if constant care and attention are given by the management and employees in applying the principle of safety. In almost every mining district some companies maintain an extremely low frequency rate of injury, whereas in the same district with essentially the same roof conditions the opposite is true.A study has recently been made of a number of reports upon fatalities in one district of one of the principal coal—producing States and it showed that 50 lives had been lost at 23 mines as the result of falls of roof or sides. These reports were made by the mine officials, safety engineers, and safety committees and an attempt was made to give both the cause and the person or factor responsible for the fatality. The Spokane Mining Research Center of the Federal Bureau of Mines is placing major emphasis on chemical stabilization as part of the ground support program. Development of polymeric material suitable for bonding rock fractures around the mine opening is one phase of the program. Some of the problems that must be considered are viscosity, applicability, adhesion, cure times, strength, toxicity, and flammability. Epoxies and polyesters were investigated, but shrinkage in polyesters caused redirected effort toward epoxies. Test results with the latter showed that bonded fractures in mine-roof strata were stronger than the virgin rock. Further tests showed that polymeric materials have good potential for bonding, and in conjunction with polymer roof bolts, are expected to result in an economic and useful new support concept.

This trainer?s guide is designed as a reference manual. The purpose is to offer information and examples to skills trainers to assist them in structuring training for new operators of Walk-Thru roof bolting machines. Trainers can use this manual as a resource for helping trainees learn, understand, and apply knowledge and skills. In this sense, the guide is not prescriptive. It is designed to offer information and trigger ideas on what might be done to accelerate learning to those who are new to the roof-bolting task. On-site trainers can modify this guide to fit their conditions, machines and equipment, and work procedures. They can integrate roof control plans, company policies and procedures, and operators? manuals from the manufacturers of the original equipment into this guide. Every trainee is different and will come to the job with varying levels of relevant knowledge and skills. The trainer?s decisions on where to start, how to organize the on-the-job and classroom training portions, and when and how to offer different aspects of the training will be based on (1) a pretraining assessment of the trainee?s knowledge and skills and (2) the trainer?s experience in conducting skills training. The ?Skill Check? section might be useful for deciding where training should start among miners who have underground experience but limited knowledge of roof-bolting techniques. Every job carries a learning curve and likely has a number of ?teachable moments? where significantly new knowledge and skills can be learned.

Relative enthalpies of V20S from 298.15 to 1,101.0 K were measured at the Bureau of Mines to provide data needed for the advancement of min-eral technology. Enthalpies were measured with a copper-block calorimeter. A sharp melting point was found at 951 K, with [~~ = 15.690 kcal/ mol ] for the standard enthalpy of melting. Tabulated values are given at selected temperature increments between 298.15 and 1,500 K for the standard relative enthalpy [(HO -H~98),] heat capacity (CpO), entropy (SO), and Gibbs energy function [-(Go -H298)/T]. Standard relative enthal-pies are also given in equation form and combined with data from the literature to derive values of standard enthalpies of formation and Gibbs energies of formation.

The mining law of May 16, 1884, is still the basic mining legislation in Smeden. To satisfy a demand for a revision of the entire mining law, special commissions have been at work for a number of years; but present indications are that the work will require several more years for its completion. The changes contemplated would affect mainly the relations between the nine operator and the landemer, as the present law, according to general opinion, tends unduly to jeopardize the landowner's right in favor of the miner. The socialist party desires additional changes, especially in the direction of giving more direct control of the industry to the State, a control that it now seems to exercise through individual agreements with mining companies. Its control of the Lapland iron mines comes through its sharing the ownership with the Luossavaara-iirunavaara Altb. In this instance, the Government should be Considered as a private commercial body, since the agreement with the company

A system for measuring amplitude probability distributions (APD’s) of electromagnetic noise in coal mines is described and typical APD’s from an underground coal mine are presented. The APD is a basic statistic required for the design and analysis of communication systems, especially those intended for use in noisy environments, and where neither overdesign nor underdesign is acceptable. The rms and average field strengths are obtained by integration of the APD, and examples are shown at several frequencies. All field strength levels are given in absolute units. Selected frequencies cover the range from 10 kHz to 32 MHz.

The growing interest in beryllium as a structural material, and its in-creased use in recent years for atomic energy application, have led both government and industry to express concern over the inadequacy of the beryllium resources in the United States and the free world. Contemplated and proposed uses for this unique material will surpass the capacity of the domestic beryllium mining industry to supply raw material, which is presently extracted from relatively small deposits by hand sorting. The need for a simple beneficiation process for beryl ores has long been recognized by the Bureau of Mines, but to date no single process has proved satisfactory for treating deposits containing a sufficient tonnage of beryl ore to warrant commercial exploitation. As a part of the Bureau's continuing effort to develop an economical recovery process, this report describes flotation research on samples of beryl-bearing pegmatites from the George Roebling mine in Connecticut, and the Colony mine in New Hampshire. The study resulted in two methods of treatment to which the ores responded reasonably well.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines has patented and transferred to industry an abrasive-enhanced water-jet rock drill. This drill incorporates three novel components: a collimator, jet deflectors for cutting clearance, and an unpressurized swivel, which rotates at 1,000 rpm while passing 20 gpm of an abrasive slurry flowing at 1,000 ft/s. Drilling occurs through the action of a 10,000-psi, 2O-gpm water jet into which is entrained 72 lb/min of abrasives. The pumps, hoses, and fittings are those commonly used in the water-jet-cleaning industry. Only inexpensive, common sandblasting abrasives are used. This drill can cut through hard rocks with moderate-pressure jets; e.g., rocks with a compressive strength of 73,000 psi can be drilled with a 1O,OOO-psi abrasive jet. In addition to drilling holes, the drill can cut deep, narrow kerfs; collar a hole at any angle; drill through rubble; and chamber holes. The development of the abrasive jet drill is a significant advance in the state of the art of hard-rock drilling. The Government of the United States has licensed the abrasive jet drill patent to Weatherford Water Jetting Systems.

In August 1984 the U.S. Bureau of Mines conducted a study of the mineral resource development potential of the Badger Canyon-Antelope Creek area, within the Boulder-Pioneer wilderness study area, about 5 miles northeast of Ketchum, 10. The purpose of this study was to investigate in greater detail an area which was designated by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) and the Bureau as having a moderate mineral resource potential for zinc, molybdenum, lead, and silver, and a low potential for copper. One hundred twenty-eight soil samples were taken along a 6,2S0-ft traverse on the ridge separating Badger Canyon and Antelope Creek. 5 Five rock samples were collected from old prospect pits and mineralized outcrops. All samples were analyzed for gold. Silver, copper, lead, zinc, molybdenum, arsenic, antimony, vanadium, and mercury. The metal concentrations in the soil samples along the traverse are irregularly distributed. Samples collected near old prospect pits tend to be high in lead and zinc, undoubtedly a reflection of underlying galena-and sphalerite-bearing quartz veins. All of the copper and mercury values in the soils are less than the detection limit, as are most of the lead, molybdenum, and antimony values. Except for lead and zinc values, the metal concentrations in the rock samples are low. Galena and sphalerite were observed in quartz vein samples collected at the old prospects. The results of the study indicate that the galena-sphalerite-bearing quartz veins and veinlets are too narrow, widely-spaced, and low in metal values to be economic. Low concentrations of metals in the soil and rock samples, combined with the lack of major mining activity in the past, indicate that the area has a low likelihood for economic development.

Approach Install a new pallet loading dust control system which uses a push-pull ventilation technique along with a hydraulic lift table to control the pallet loading height throughout the entire loading cycle. How It Works A low-volume, high-velocity blower system operating at approximately at 120 cfm blows a stream of air over the top layer of bags on the pallet. The blower system is composed of two 3-inch air jets (approximately 1,200-ft/min velocity) directed toward an exhaust system on the opposite side of the pallet. As these air jets travel across the pallet, they en-train dust generated during bag stacking. The dust laden air is then captured by the exhaust ventilation system which draws approximately 2,500 cfm through an exhaust hood on the opposite side of the pallet.

The alkali metals , sodium and potassium , and more particularly sodium , occur abundantly in chemical combination with other elements . The elements themselves are available in metallic form but are so active chemically that they oxidize rapidly in contact merely with the air . Potassium will even catch fire spontaneously in air , and both the metals will decompose water with explosive violence . Inasmuch as they are almost as soft as wax they are not suitable for the structural or other mechanical uses characteristic of ordinary metals , and consequently the uses of these elements even in the metallic condition are based upon chemical rather than physical qualities . Sodium metal is used largely as a commercial reducing agent , but potassium metal is rarely found outside of chemical laboratories . Numerous salts and other compounds of these elements enter largely into world trade and are commercially very important , but none of these compounds except sodium peroxide and sodium cyanide are made economically from the metals . Sodium is generally considered as rather an uncommon metal , but in point of annual tonnage produced it is far more important than mercury , magnesium , molybdenum , bismuth, cadmium, cobalt , gold , silver , or the various rarer metals .

This study describes five fatal accidents so unusual in occurrence that the chain of circumstances bringing them about may never be duplicated. The intent of this publication is to illustrate that everyone working underground is subjected, at all times, to definite inherent mining hazards and that safety devices, though provided, often are ineffective or not used. It is hoped that a study of these fatal accidents in bituminous-coal mines will show workers and safety engineers that nothing can be taken for granted. Safety planning with continuous study can prevent these unusual accidents as well as the routine recurring types, which cause the majority of coal-mining injuries. The treacherous, fatalistic philosophy that "it can't happen to me" or that "when my time's up I'll get it regardless of what I do," still prevails among individuals and even safety engineers. The individual or safety man who believes in luck as applied to safety should not read any further, since this study was written for the sincere, safety-minded individual who accepts the prevention of all accidents as a challenge to his knowledge, initiative, persuasiveness, and salesmanship.

"The Keely mine at Dagger, Indiana, is one of the few mines that is being operated successfully on a cooperative basis. This shaft mine is developing 133 acres of coal in the Indiana No. 6 bed, which here averages 5-1/2 feet thick and. lies about 110 feet below the surface. Thirty seven (37) miners and twenty (20) company men or day man are employed, and the daily output is around 300 tons. Practically the entire production is sold by contract for railroad use. No mining machines are used and all coal is produced by pick work.The mine was originally owned and operated by the Stockton Coal. Co. of Dugger, but about eight years ago it was leased to Mr. Roy Price. He sub-leased the property to ten miners, who formed an association known as the Dugger Mutual Coal and Mining Co., to work the mine cooperatively.At first many difficulties were encountered; the cooperative idea is an old one, but the practice was new to those interested. Some of the men were energetic, ambitious workers; others were inclined to let their associates produce the coal but wanted to share in the profits. In time, after a hard struggle and many changes in the personnel of the company, business-like methods were adopted and the mine was put on a paying basis."

The Bureau of Mines studied solid-state electromigration to determine the value of the technique as a method of purifying cerium metal. Cerium metal in bars 6 inches long and 1/2 inch in diameter was refined at 600° C by solid-state electrolysis to remove iron, copper, and manganese. Iron and manganese were electrotransported to the anode and copper was electrotransported to the cathode. The concentration of iron at the anode of a cerium bar was 800 times greater than the concentration at the cathode. The concentration of manganese at the anode was twice the value at the cathode. The concentration of copper was 170 times greater at the cathode than at the anode. A radiotracer technique was used to follow the iron migration in the cerium metal. Molybdenum, silicon, and aluminum impurities were not electrotransported.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines conducted experiments for predicting materials' ease of combustion (smoldering onset, smoldering, flaming, and decomposition rates) by means of submicrometer smoke particle characteristics for the development of a simple test method. The experiments were carried out in an approximately 20-L furnace, with a 10-L/min airflow through the furnace for a 14-min duration, at set furnace temperatures of 150°, 250°, and 1,000° C. The variables studied as a function of time were the onset time of smoke particles, time and duration of maximum smoke particle generation, average concentration of smoke particles, and particles' average diameter, mass weight loss, and furnace temperatures. Results show that the onset time of smoke particles is predictive of materials' ease of smoldering, and the time of maximum smoke particle generation and its duration, coupled with mass weight loss, are predictive of materials' ease of smoldering and flaming (depending on the experimental temperatures), and decomposition rates.
