1. The Pittsburgh is the most important bed in Greene County from the standpoint of present production and recoverable reserves. 2. Known measured and indicated reserves in all beds, based on a minimum thickness of 14 inches and 1,800 short tons per acre-foot of coal in place, are estimated at 6,011 million short tons as of January 1, 1954. Of this total, 5,967 million short tons is in beds 28 inches and more thick. Areas in some beds were omitted from the estimate because available data relative to the bed characteristics are too meager to make an estimate that conforms with the definitions of measured and indicated coal adopted for this study. Should future drilling or development prove reserves in these areas, such reserves should be added to the total estimated reserves.

In its role of providing technical assistance to the mining industry, the Bureau of Mines' Tuscaloosa Research Center has conducted research to develop trapped miner location systems which would aid in locating miners trapped by underground mining disasters. Efforts to produce electromagnetic systems for the location of trapped miners underground and to communicate with them were surveyed, from the 1920's to 1981. Theoretical studies of through-the-earth electromagnetic transmissions are described as well as studies of the electrical characteristics of various rocks, minerals, and soil. Several trapped miner location systems are reviewed including the Westinghouse systems, the DEVELCO system, and an automated three-dimensional location system, and the phase difference of arrival technique. Tangential research, relevant to trapped miner location systems is described. A comprehensive bibliography covering all aspects of trapped miner, through-the-earth electromagnetic location and communications systems is appended.

As a part of a comprehensive survey of the Adirondack region, the Bureau of Mines, 1944 and 1945, conducted investigation of magnetic deposits at Dennemora, Russia Station, Redford-Clayburg, Standish, and the Ausable river region. Later in 1945, the Federal Geological Survey, started an aeromagnetic survey of the area and completed it in .1946. The Bureau of Mines extended its magnetic surveys in 1946 in the Redford-Clayburg area. In 1947 the Bureau of Mines .diamond-drilled throe holes in the Redford-Clayburg district. Clinton County has one active magnetite mine at Lyon Mountain and inactive mines at Palmer Hill and Arnold Hill, as well as along the Saranac River.

Develop technology that can reduce the dust exposure of a mine worker at the tailgate end of the longwall face by providing him with a clean split of air. Approach Use the jet spray air mover (JSAM) developed under a Bureau of Mines contract (refer to Technology News No. 117 for details on the development), to clean a small portion of the face air and to discharge the clean air behind a brattice partition. How It Works At most longwalls, air flows along the face from head-to-tail. Most of the airborne respirable dust generated along the face during mining is transported to the tailgate with the airflow. Any miner required to work at the tailgate is exposed to this dust. The only practical means of removing airborne respirable dust is with a scrubber. Simplicity and size made the JSAM the best choice for cleaning a portion of the tailgate air. The scrubber has no moving parts and is operated by water at low flow rates (<10 gpm) and fairly high pressures (250-500 psig). Many longwalls have sufficient water systems to supply the JSAM with adequate water pressures and flow rates. Also, the JSAM&apos;s size (4&apos;x 2&apos;x 1&apos;) allows it to be hung on one of the tailgate&apos;s shields or at some other convenient location. A clean split can be maintained at the tailgate by discharging the cleaned air behind a brattice partition at the work area. This should effectively seal off the clean air from the dusty air and provide the tailgate worker with a less dusty work environment.

The art of flotation has developed rapidly. Numerous technical staffs and individual investigators have, by their combined efforts, developed practicable methods of concentrating ores which ten or even five years ago were considered complex and impossible of commercial treatment. Also the work of those who have been engaged in pure research on the fundamentals of flotation has helped greatly to expedite the general development of the process. However, in spite of the highly successful practical operation of the flotation process, results are obtained and things happen that we are unable to explain completely, although much is known about the theory of the process. The rapid stride in flotation concentration, it is noteworthy to point out, is due to the freer exchange of facts and data by the staffs of the larger mining companies and the patent controlling corporations, and by investigators in general. Generally speaking, one may visit any mining plant and by presentation of proper credentials, be shown all that is going on or that is being done.

"In presenting this list of permissible explosives and blasting devices, the Bureau of Mines desires to call attention to pages 20 and 25 outlining the conditions in use under which, and only under which, the explosive or blasting device is permissible.In view of a recent publication recounting trade practice favoring the use of a blasting device without stemming, particular emphasis is placed upon condition 4 on page 20 and condition 2 on page 25. An explosive or a blasting device enumerated in the permissible lists of this Bureau is not permissible in use unless it is properly confined with clay or other incombustible stemming.PERMISSIBLE EXPLOSIVES TESTED UNDER SCHEDULE 17CAn active list of permissible explosives was published in October 1938 as part of Bureau of Mines Report of Investigations 3421, under the title ""Active List of Permissible Explosives and. This list included 191 brand names.Changes in the list that have been authorized to June 30, 1939, placed 56 additional brands of permissible explosives on the active permissible list as a result of tests, changes in brand names, or transfer from the inactive list. The Bureau of Mines has sampled microstructure of low-pressure flat flames by mass spectrometer for normal methane-oxygen-argon and for methane-oxygen-argon-bromotrifluoromethane flames. The physical and chemical phenomena, and the method of analysis of mole fraction data to evaluate net reaction rates are here considered in detail. Included is a computer program listing with output on one flame. Chemical species considered are CH4 , CO, CO2, H, H20, OH, Ar, H2, O2 , O, H2CO, CH3 , CF3Br, HF, HBr, Br, CH3Br, HCO, F2CO, CH2 CF2 , H02.

Results of initial research by the Bureau of Mines are given on the dust explosion hazard of float coal and on the related factors of occurrence, rate of production, sampling techniques, transport, and deposition of float coal. Tentatively, it is suggested that where float coal deposits prevail, a mini-mum of 80 percent incombustible be maintained in the top 1/8-inch layer to neutralize the explosion hazard of the surficial coal deposit.

The Bureau of Mines examined the effects of high humidity and water droplets on the GCA Corp. real-time aerosol monitor (RAM--l). which uses a lO4mm cyclone preseparator. Tests were conducted both in a laboratory and in a full-scale model mine entry. The laboratory tests were conducted in a test chamber saturated with moisture and water droplets. Under these extreme conditions. the RAM-I responded by indicating dust concentrations of 1-1/2 to 2 mg/m3? although the air was dust free. Within the first 2 h of each test. water accumulated in the cyclone and affected the cyclone particle separation characteristics. resulting in readings of 3 to 4 mg/m3. In addition. condensation formed inside the RAM-I case and affected the liquid crystal display (LCD). However. the full-scale mine entry tests revealed that the RAM-I can function ac-ceptably in an atmosphere of water vapor and water droplets similar to the most severe conditions found in an underground mine.

"An investigation of protocols for research performed from 1953 to 1988 on pneumoconioses (with emphasis on diseases related to coal and silica) was conducted in the Generic Mineral Technology Center for Respirable Dust. In addition, interviews were conducted with prominent U.S. medical researchers, aerosol scientists and engineers in government, industry, and universities to determine dust sources, dust preparation methods, laboratory protocols, and determinant variables related to in vitro and in vivo research and assess the comparability of results.Since the original report on the protocol project, additional research regarding free radical existence in freshly produced dust particles and the shape and contamination of particles generated for research purposes has further heightened scientists' concerns. As indicated by current research, fresher dust particles and those with more angular shapes may have a different level of reactivity in biological systems than do older or more rounded particles. Therefore, research on dust preparation methods for biomedical studies was undertaken and will be outlined here.Results of protocol review and interviews are summarized. Research on size reduction methods and their particle characteristics plus some recommendations concerning dust preparation methods and reporting in biomedical publications are also presented. Recent evidence indicates that these recommendations may be of importance in comparing and interpreting research results."

Mathematical expressions are derived for the histories of the pressure, flame radius, mass fraction burned, and burned and unburned gas temperatures associated with a spherical flame propagating concentrically in a spherical vessel. The equations are solved numerically for a 9.5 pct CH4/air mixture using the best available information for the burning velocity, expansion ratio, and specific heat ratio. Calculated histories are in complete accord with experimental measurements. The accuracy of calculated histories is determined relative to errors in the system parameters, and it is found that 10 pct errors in either the burning velocity or the expansion ratio results in a 40-pct error in the pressure history. A 10-pct error in either burned or unburned specific heat ratio results in a 22-pct error &apos;in the pressure history. It was further established that the usual assumption of constant specific heat ratio is unacceptable, but equating the burned and unburned specific heat ratios result in no apparent error in the histories. The cubic law (P = Kt3 + Po) is derived and discussed, and it is found that the law is valid only during the early period (P<2 atm) of flame growth.

In laboratory tests using reconstructed soil columns, rubber latex showed good sealing efficiency when applied at a rate equivalent to 4000-5000 pounds per acre. Results of field testing, however, were inconclusive. The ideal situation in which latex would coagulate in a narrow zone two to three feet below the surface by reacting with acidic or metallic constituents of the soil was not attained. Rather, the latex was deposited progressively as it passed through the soil (most of it remained in the top foot), the rate of deposition being dependent on soil structure and composition as well as on properties of the latex such as particle size and emulsion stability. Latex stability appears to be a more critical property than latex particle size in controlling penetration. Addition of excess anionic or nonionic surfactants to latex improved its penetration into the soil. A styrene-butadiene (SBR) rubber latex of 2400 Å average particle size with high mechanical stability gave the best balance of penetrating ability and sealing capacity in laboratory tests and this was confirmed in tests on a 5 x 5 foot test plot at Lanse, Pennsylvania. This latex was subsequently applied to three one-quarter-acre plots at Lanse by sprinkler irrigation, and compared to adjacent areas that were sprinkled with water only. Soil moisture measurements did not enable us to judge the effectiveness of the seal because differences between sampling positions were greater than differences between treated and untreated sections, but permeability tests showed that water flow was much slower (90-99% reduction) within the top ten inches of soil in the latex- treated sections. This sealing effectiveness was reduced after wintering. There was no deleterious effect on the vegetation as a result of sprinkling the areas with latex. A laboratory study conducted in a 5 x 5 x 5 foot box containing uniform reconstructed soil from a New Jersey source suggests that latex penetration into the soil in the field occurs mainly through natural macro openings and not through the capillaries of the soil structure. Dilute solutions of ammonium hydroxide or sodium carbonate (with no latex present) were found to seal effectively in laboratory soil columns as well as in field applications. However, since these chemicals are water soluble, the seal is temporary. Raw material costs of latex at the application rates used in the field testing are in the order of $1000 per acre. This Bureau of Mines report proposes a new methodology for estimating industrial dust explosion hazards in terms of three probabilities or co-factors: The dispersion of the dust, the existence of a flammable dust concentration, and the presence of an effective source of ignition. This method or rationale is proposed as a replacement for the "explosibility index" that was first suggested 25 yr ago, but which, by consen-sus among leading researchers in the field, is now outdated. This report presents a detailed critique of the deficiencies of that old, material-oriented index, and develops the logical rationale for its re-placement by an approach that is better suited for quantitative hazard evaluations. A variety of such evaluations are illustrated, which show how a quantitative prediction of explosion frequencies can be obtained from laboratory measurements and operating conditions in a given indus-trial facility. The method has some pitfalls, particularly as they re-late to the correlation of events or their randomness. These are discussed, as well as the method&apos;s other limitations and uncertainties. This work is intended to provide a beginning to a quantitative approach to explosion hazard assessment. To that end, a new method is proposed for estimating thermal ignition probabilities in terms of the measured laboratory autoignition temperature of a dust, its relationship to the operating temperature, and its distribution within a given industrial system.

Air quantity-pressure and methane concentration surveys were conducted by the Bureau of Mines in accessible portions of an area being pillared in a Pittsburgh coalbed mine in West Virginia. These included two mined-out and three active butt headings and a bleeder system. The particular mine workings were started in virgin coal directly from a set of main headings; the main reason for the study was the difficulty usually encountered in adequately bleeding the gobs under such conditions. Although the two separate return airways in each active butt heading and the North and 1 Left bleeders contained acceptable methane concentrations (0.01 to 0.78 percent in the butts and 0.73 to 1.0 percent in the bleeders) with significant total methane removal (109 cfm in butts and 631 cfm in bleeders), there were relatively large areas in the gobs with possible minimal airflows. This condition appears to have developed from lack of systematic regulation of the airflow across the gobs and appears to indicate the existence of considerably more methane in the probably low flow areas in the gob.

The Bureau of Mines undertook the development and evaluation of a system to provide a simultaneous, on-line determination of both iron and silica in iron ore beneficiation streams as part of a program to improve the efficiency to mineral separation processes, Californium-252 (252-Cf) was the neutron source used in the system for measuring the amounts of silica and iron in bulk slurries by thermal neutron capture-gamma ray spectra analysis. The theory of thermal neutron capture-gamma ray reactions and their potential application to mineral processing stream analysis is discussed. The prototype system and supporting software developed by the Bureau is described. During the initial phase of the work, both simulated and actual pilot plant slurries were investigated using a 60-to 32-µg 252-Cf neutron source. The percent solids of the slurries was ranged from 2 to 40 percent and the silica and iron content ranged from 1.5 to 83 percent and from 10 to 65 percent, respectively. Accuracy of the determination of the components in the solids was dependent upon the percent solids in the slurry.

A method has been developed in the laboratory for successfully treating titaniferous magnetite ore from the deposit at Iron Mountain, Wyo. The ore is roasted with 15 percent sodium carbonate to convert the vanadium to a water-soluble form and fix the soda for the subsequent electric-smelting step. Approximately 90 percent of the vanadium is recoverable in a product assaying 80 percent V2O5. The leached calcine is briquetted and smelted in a graphite-lined electric-arc furnace. Substantially all of the titanium is recovered in a soda slag, assaying 60 percent TiO2 and 2 percent Fe, which can be upgraded to 75 to 80 percent TiO2 by leaching with dilute sulfuric acid. The upgraded slag could be utilized for the production of titanium dioxide pigments or titanium tetrachloride. About 90 percent of the iron is recovered as pig iron, containing only minor amounts of vanadium, titanium, and sulfur. The high TiO2 slag compares favorably with slag containing about 70 percent TiO2 being produced by the Quebec Iron & Titanium Corp. at Sorel, Quebec. The data obtained from this investigation indicate that a feasible process has been developed for treating Iron Mountain ore, and larger-scale testing is warranted to develop engineering data for the ultimate utilization of this deposit as a source of titanium, iron, and vanadium. There are adequate supplies of basic raw materials, electric power, water, sodium carbonate, coal, and petroleum products within fairly short distances of Cheyenne and Laramie, Wyo., the nearest cities and probable plant- and labor-supply points.

"An electro-optical method was used to quantify superoxide (SO) release from single rat pulmonary alveolar macrophages (PAM) exposed in vitro to respirable quartz and kaolin dusts and in vivo to quartz. Release was determined by measuring the reduction of nitroblue tdrazolium (NBT) to a diformazan precipitate at 550 nm from video-recorded images of individual cells. In vitro exposure to 0.025 or 0.05 mg/ml kaolin for 40 minutes resulted in no significant differences in either the total diformazan produced (max) or the maximum rate of diformazan production (R)./n vitro exposure to 0.025 mg/ml c1uartz decreased max 38 percent while no significant change was found using 0.05 mg/ml. However, R was decreased 31 percent and 24 percent for the low and high dose, respectively. In contrast, PAM obtained from animals exposed in vivo to quartz dust for two or four weeks in inhalation chambers exhibited increased production of diformazan. However, only PAM analyzed three days post-exposure showed significant increases, while PAM from animals sacrificed ten or 31 days post-exposure were not significantly different from control. The combined in vitro and in vivo quartz results might suggest that there is an initital acute response to exposure that decreases the ability of PAM to produce SO, followed by recruitment of production of PAM with increased SO producing capability. It appears that removal of animals from the source of exposure permits PAM to return to control levels of SO production by31 days. Whether this would be true for chronic exposure remains to be elucidated.IntroductionPulmonary alveolar macrophages (PAM) protect the lungs by phagocytizing foreign debris and bacteria.(1) This process involves ingestion as well as destruction of foreign matter. Phagocytosis usually is accompanied by a respiratory burst which increases cellular oxygen consumption leading to the release of highly reactive oxygen metabolites.(2) These agents have been implicated in the killing of bacteria by phagocytes, but they have also been shown to be toxic and,have been linked to cancer, emphysema, arthritis, diabetes, and other diseases.(3) Toxic effects may be a result of 1) an abnormally low production of metabolites, resulting in damage to lung tissue by the respired bacteria and/or dusts; or 2) an abnormally high production resulting in direct damage to lung tissue by metabolites themselves."

This chapter summarizes data on crude nonfuel mineral production for the United States, its island possessions, and the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico. Included also are the tables that show the principal nonfuel mineral commodities exported from and imported into the United States and that compare world and U.S. mineral production. The detailed data from which these tables were derived are contained in the individual commodity chapters of Volume I and in the State chapters of Volume II of this edition of the Minerals Yearbook. Although crude mineral production may be measured at any of several stages of extraction and processing, the stage of measurement used in this chapter is what is normally termed "mine output." It usually refers to minerals or ores in the form in which they are first extracted from the ground, but customarily includes the output from auxiliary processing at or near the mines.

The Bureau of Mines, U.S. Department of the Interior, in cooperation with the Department of Energy, has attempted to increase the activity of nickel catalysts for converting synthesis gas, derived from coal, to a substitute natural gas. This report describes the effects of low-level additions of B, Ca, Ce, Co, Mn, Mo, Pd, Re, Ti, Y, Zn, and Zr on the methanation activity of Raney nickel. The methanation rate at 320° C and the resistance to poisoning by 2 ppm H2S were used to compare catalysts. The effects of the additions were small, and the experimental variances were large, necessitating the use of statistical methods to identify significant effects. Co, Ti, Y, and Zn improved the resistance to H2S poisoning, but only Co improved the methanation rate In some individual catalysts containing Ca, Mo, or Mn, both the methanation rate and resistance to H2S poisoning were improved.
