A knowledge of the mechanics of wave propagation through the earth is essential if reliable communication systems are to be designed for coal mine environments. To obtain a reliable basis from which accurate propagation predictions could be drawn, a series of theoretical studies have been prepared for the US Bureau of Mines by Mr. Ramsay Decker of Spectra Associates, Inc. through a subcontract with Collins Radio Group. These reports formulate the analytical techniques from which we may derive frequencies and antenna configurations that yield the optimum signal-to-noise ratios over the greatest distances in mine environments. The reports of sections 2 and 4 deal with analytical techniques for determining the signal-to- noise ratio within a mine environment for loop-to-loop and line source-to-loop antenna con- figurations. The analytical results of these reports were then implemented into computer programs to obtain predictions concerning through-the-earth signal propagation. These preliminary predictions are based on noise data compiled by Bensema, Maxwell and Stone, and WVU prior to the extensive research conducted by the National Bureau of Standards (NBS). These initial measurements indicated a 20- to 30-dB lower noise level than that measured recently by NBS. The recent NBS data is that used by Collins in the final predictions. "In California the history of tin mining began in Riverside County in 1853, with the discovery of the Temescal deposit. This deposit remained the only one with a production record until recent small shipments were made from Kern and San Bernardino Counties.According to the California State Division of Mines, Temescal's total output has been about 125 tons of tin, all of which was produced in 1891 and 1892. It was idle from 1892 to 1928.An extensive but unsuccessful development campaign carried on in 1928 and 1929 by the American Tin Corp. produced only half a ton of the metal, and the property again was idle until 1943, when an attempt to resume operations proved unsuccessful. After 1929 no production is recorded from California until 1944 end 1945, when small shipments of sorted ore from Kern County returned about 2 tons of tin and 1-1/3 tons was recovered from sorted ore and concentrates from San Bernardino County. The total output of tin from California has been less than 150 tons, and less than 4 percent of this was produced in the last 50 years, in spite of numerous attempts during that period to promote tin mines,So marked a scarcity of a metal essential in war makes any occurrence interesting. When some prospects were reported to the Bureau of Mines in July 1942, in a new field 10 miles east of Gorman, they were at once examined and the preliminary exploration by the owners closely followed. Eventually one was explored by bulldozing end diamond drilling as a joint project by the Bureau of Mines and the Geological Survey.To supplement this joint project, the authors undertook independently a general survey of tin in California - a survey designed to check reported occurrences and to bring their status up to date. In this work, the 37 places described in the text and spotted on the accompanying map, (fig. 1) were visited end sampled. Although traces of tin were found in many pieces, nothing that suggested a tin mine was found anywhere, and it is difficult to base much hope for appreciable future tin production upon anything found thus far in California."

The Bureau of Mines investigated nitrous oxide (N20) stability when used as a solvent for organic removal from metal powder surfaces. Both supercritical and subcritical conditions were studied. This investigation was prompted by the occurrence of a violent reaction when supercritical N20 was being used to deoil a metal powder grinding waste sample that contained 20 to 25 wt pct cutting oil. Tests were conducted to determine the cause of the reaction and to define stability limits. Test data showed that the waste's oil fraction reacted violently with N20 acting as an oxidizer; the metal powder acted as a promoter to reduce the ignition temperature. Although the data were scattered, this temperature appeared to reach a minimum at a certain pressure (dependent on vessel and sample size). The minimum ignition temperature for a 0.64-g sample in a 72-cm3 vessel was 360° C at 200 psig. As the sample size increased, the ignition temperature decreased. For example, when the sample size was increased to 10 g, a reaction occurred at 240° C and 600 psig. Because of the variability of ignition temperature with pressure and sample size, safe operating conditions were not established. Overall, this research showed that extreme caution should be exercised when using N20 in an organic or organic-metal system.

Spontaneous combustion fires involving high-sulfide-content ores are a relatively infrequent yet serious safety hazard in mining. They are also the cause of lengthy mine shutdowns because they typically occur in areas of a mine where abundant fuel material is present but which are inaccessible for fire fighting. This Bureau of Mines report describes research to design, fabricate, and test in the laboratory and field a system that warns of spontaneous combustion fires in metal mines. Overall performance of the detection system was found to be satisfactory, in that the system was capable of reliably detecting low levels of combustion products believed to indicate the preflaming stage of spontaneous combustion in metal mines. Installation of similar systems in mines with a high risk of spontaneous combustion is recommended. Principal operating problems and recommended corrective actions are also discussed.

Ventilation-pressure surveys are required to determine the rates of pressure losses in various parts of mine-airway systems. These may be determined directly by differential pressure measurements or deduced from absolute pressure measurements, Despite the confusion caused by its inverted nonlinear scale, the altimeter has special application to pressure surveys in mines in which only small differences in elevation are involved, as is true for most of our large bituminous-coal mines in these, the judicious use of information obtained by pressure surveying can result in greatly improved working conditions as regards health and safety and, in many instances, can yield large financial returns. The main purposes of this report are to discuss methods of using altimeters for pressure surveys and to present the particular methods of making surveys and calculating the results of surveys used by the Mine Ventilation Section of the Bureau of Mines.

The Bureau of Mines conducted a field study to investigate thin suppression of respirable dust by water sprays on a continuous-mining machine. Determining the importance of the top and bottom sprays for two types of spray nozzles was emphasized. Results showed, at a 90-pct confidence level, that (1) at least 70 pct of the dust was generated during the sump cut, even though nearly half of the coal was mined during the downshear operation, (2) the water sprays on the top of the boom had little effect in suppressing respirable dust, and (3) B.D. 5 spray nozzles mounted beneath the boom reduced dust at least 33 pet more than B.D. 5 sprays mounted on top of the boom. A single-cut technique was developed that gave good reproducibility for replicate cuts (coefficient of variation of 20 pct).

"The Bureau of Mines for some time advocated the firing of all blasts in coal mines as single shots, and this method of firing is the general practice in American bituminous-coal mines. All single shots can be fired with permissible single-shot units so designed that they will not ignite mixtures of methane and air.If several shots in a face are fired singly it is necessary to return the face after each shot. In some mines having steeply pitching coal seams, this may be dangerous or even impossible, under these conditions shots are usually fired simultaneously.Several shots cannot be fixed simultaneously with permissible single-shot blasting units, and safe types of multiple shots blasters are not readily available. This means that the firing of multiple shots in gassy mines is usually accompanied by the possibility of gas ignition as the blast occurs.Tests have been made at the Pittsburgh Experiment Station to determine the possibility of developing safe types of multiple-shot units suitable for such use, or of applying other type safely in gassy sections of mines where firing shots singly is impracticable.The tests may be divided into the following four groups:1. Tests to demonstrate hazard in the use of existing types of multiple-shot units of the portable generator type.2. Tests to show the electrical characteristics of multiple-shot generator units relative to the possibility of preventing igniting sparks and of modifying the design and application of such units in furthering safety."

Carbonizing properties of the principal coal beds of Butler County, Pa., are described in this report by the Bureau of Mines. Eight samples, representing the Upper Freeport, Lower Freeport, Upper Kittanning, Middle Kittanning, Lower Kittanning, Clarion, and Brookville beds, were carbonized at 900° C. by the Bureau of Mines-American Gas Association (BM-AGA) method. Butler County coals rank as high-volatile A bituminous and are generally characterized by high sulfur content compared with Appalachian coals used for industrial coking. If cleaned, the Brookville and one sample of Upper Freeport coal would be acceptable as the major component of metallurgical coking blends. The other Butler County coals tested would be unsuitable for this purpose because of either excessive sulfur or poor coking properties.

Provide a low-cost, low-maintenance method for im¬proving mine water quality on abandoned mine land (AML) sites. Approach A model (figure 1) is presented for selecting, designing, and sizing one or several passive mine drainage treatment systems that can be used in remediation of AML. The three principal types of passive mine drainage technologies for the treatment of coal mine drainage are an aerobic system, a compost wetland, and an anoxic limestone drain. The multistep approach presented here provides a simplified method to characterize the type and magnitude of the water quality problem and then to select either a single treatment system or a combination of treatment systems to address the specific site situation. How It Works Step 1. Discharge Characterization. Characterization of the discharge consists of measuring the discharge flow rate and collecting water samples at the point of discharge for chemical analysis. Both the flow rate and chemistry of a discharge can vary seasonally and in response to storm events. It is important to account for this variability by determining flow rates and water chemistry under various conditions. Water should be analyzed for pH, dissolved iron (Fe), alkalinity, and hot acidity (using the H2O2 method).

In connection with, a stream-pollution-research project, a colorimetric method was developed for concentrations of 1 to 30 p.p.m, of pine oil in water. The method depends on the stable bluish-green color produced when pine oil is reacted with vanillin-hydrochloric acid reagent at 60° C. for 25 minutes. The colorimetric reaction actually determines alphaterpineol, the principal component in pine oil. Some waters may require a special preparation in which ion-exchange resins are used to remove interference. ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS The author wishes to express his appreciation to A. A. Marked progress in safety has characterized the operation of coal mines in general in the State of Washington during the 5- year period 1928-1932 , particularly during the years 1931 and 1932. Physical conditions such as steep pitches , inherently bad roof and floor , prevalence of gas , and explosibility of the dust of Washington coals present certain definite hazards . Although advances have been made in accident reduction in Washington , the State still has far to go in that direction . The State has endeavored to reduce its coal -mine accidents by the usual method of making certain definite safety requirements mandatory . The value of education has not been underrated , but the educational method used has not altogether achieved the res lts desired by the industry itself , particularly within certain imdividual organizations . The past 2 years have witnessed a growth , in certain instances , of the essential ideas that the observance of safety precautions on the part of all is demanded if accidents are to be reduced , and that the initiating and carrying out of any program to promote and obtain desired results in accident elimination must begin and function from the top downward . Mining operations of Washington mines have been described in various publications of the United States Bureau of Mines .

This paper describes Mohave Mining and Milling Co. methods of mining and milling manganese ore in Arizona. It is one of a series of publications prepared by the Bureau of Mines on methods and costs in various mining districts in the United States. Production of manganese ore, as such, in Arizona began in 1915. Before this time manganiferous ores had been mined primarily for silver content and used as a smelter flux. From 1916 to 1918 approximately 69,000 long tons of manganese and mangsniferous ores were mined. After World War I production dropped to almost nothing until World War II, during which period more than 24,000 long tons were produced. A lull in mangonese mining occurred after World War II, having production rates of only a few hundred tons annually through 1952.

"The Marvel mines 1 and 3 of the Roden Coal Co. are located in the Cahaba field in Bibb County, Ala., nearly southwest from Birmingham, an airline distance of roughly 30 miles. The coal of the Clark seam at this point has some coking properties, but at present it is sold exclusively as a domestic and steaming coal.This paper, which is the second of a series on the washability of Alabama coals, like its predecessor dealing with the Mary Lee seam,5 contains screen-sizing and float-and-sink tests of a representative sample of the raw slack, and slotted-screen tests showing the proportions of flaky particles in certain selected sizes; inasmuch as this coal is not used for coke manufacture, no crushing tests have been made. These data have been obtained in connection with an exhaustive study of coal preparation in Alabama, now being conducted by the United States Bureau of Mines and the University of Alabama with the cooperation of the different coal operators. As the work progresses, other papers will follow containing further data on Alabama coals and giving results obtained in preparing these coals by various methods.The only published investigative work on the Clark seam is that of Forbes,6 who gives a number of sections of this seam in Marvel No. 3 mine with proximate and ultimate analyses of face samples taken in the mine and also some analyses of delivered coal.The available information on this coal indicated that the preparation problem was one of ash reduction. In order to substantiate this information a complete analysis of the 3/4 by 3/16 inch size, and sulphur determinations and ash-fusibility tests of the float-and-sink fractions have been made; these results are given in Tables 1 and 2. As these results also indicate that the preparation problem is one of ash reduction, the tests and discussion have been devoted to that subject."

This study was made to present the mining methods and costs of a uranium mine typical of other mines in the highly productive Westwater Canyon member of the Morrison formation in New Mexico. Four mining methods have been used at the Section 23 mine: the retreat-room-and-pillar method, a sublevel-slicing method (also called top-slicing), the horizontal-cut-and-fill method, and a modification of the ring-drill method. The application of the methods at this mine and at other mines in the area should be of benefit to operators with similar problems. Ore bodies in the Section 23 mine are irregularly shaped and vary in size, in rock strength, in moisture content, and in uranium concentrations; different mining methods are required and mining costs are not constant. A 6-month period of operation at the Section 23 mine was analyzed and mining costs, not including amortization, depreciation, or Federal taxes, averaged about $6.80 per ton.

This U.S. Bureau of Mines report identifies the types of serious accidents that occur most frequently at small underground coal mines and describes the strategies that could help prevent these accidents. A wide variety of methods for improving safety are suggested, including improvements in the design of equipment, work procedures, work schedules, safety programs, and emergency response plans, as well as techniques for diagnosing the potential hazards associated with new technologies and work procedures. Some of the papers in this volume focus on preventing specific types of mining accidents--ones associated with materials handling (primarily back injuries), equipment maintenance, improper machine guarding, and ground failure during retreat mining. Although the recommendations in this volume are heavily influenced by research performed at underground coal mines in the Appalachian coalfields, most of the papers contain advice that is equally pertinent to almost any type of mine.

The conversion of dilute sulfur dioxide gas into sulfuric acid by autoxidation in mechanical cells of the flotation or gas absorber types was investigated. Bench-scale tests were made with sulfur dioxide-air mixtures to determine the influence of several factors on autoxidation of sulfur dioxide, using iron and manganese salts as catalysts. The laboratory investigation subsequently was extended to pilot plant acid-making tests, using a modified turbomixer gas absorber having a 12-inch-diameter impeller. Sulfur dioxide gas was produced for the tests by roasting pyrite in a fluidized-bed reactor. In the better tests, made with manganese sulfate as the catalyst, the equivalent of 1,000 pounds of anhydrous H2SO4 was produced per 24 hours as a 10-percent solution; power consumption was 0.2 kwhr per pound of equivalent anhydrous acid synthesized. The batch and continuous tests demonstrated the technical feasibility of producing dilute sulfuric acid by autoxidation of sulfur dioxide gas in mechanical cells when converting pyrite roaster or waste smelter gases.

High-temperature heat-content values of pure lutetium sesquioxide and dysprosium sesquioxide were measured over the temperature range from 298° to 1,800° K. Similar data for cerium sesquioxide were calculated from measurements of a mixture of cerium sesquioxide and dioxide and known values for cerium dioxide. The results for lutetium sesquioxide are regular. Dysprosium sesquioxide has a minor thermal anomaly near 1,590° K, the extra heat absorption being 220 cal/mole, Hexagonal cerium sesquioxide undergoes a transformation around 1,050° K, which is only slowly reversible; consequently results were obtained for both the low- and high-temperature varieties. The original heat-content data are reported, and smooth values of heat content and the corresponding entropy increments are tabulated. Equations were derived to represent the heat-content values.

"This paper presents an analysis of fragment size distribution and characteristics of fracture surface in coal cutting using a rotary coal cutting simulator. Coal cutting by a drum type continuous miner was simulated in the laboratory. A series of tests along both the face and butt cleat direction of coal under different operating and in-situ conditions were performed. In each experiment the cut surface was photographed microscopically and the coal cuttings were collected and sized. Data were used to show how and to what extent various parameters effect size distribution of the coal cutting and how this correlates with the characteristics of the fracture surface. This study resulted in establishing a number of distinct correlations between the size distribution and fracture surface. These correlations were primarily based on the degree of interaction between adjacent bits and the amount of bit-coal interaction taking place on the cutting path. Some of the major results of this study are as follows:Zones of bit-coal interactions proved vital toward understanding the effect the conical bit has on the fragmentation process. This in turn led to the identification of areas which are responsible for the production of fines and generation of respirable dust.The various parameters employed in the coal cutting experiments which showed a strong effect on the coal fragment size distribution were: bit type, bit spacing, depth of cut, in-situ stresses, and cleat orientation. Bit angle and cutting head velocity exhibited the least effect and no correlation was established.From this study it is obvious that the key to achieving efficient coal fragmentation is to limit the degree of bit-coal interaction that takes place throughout the bit path while causing maximum interaction between adjacent bits. Accomplishing this not only increases the percentage of large fragments produced but limits the amount of secondary crushing that takes place in the bit path thus resulting in decreasing fines and consequently, the amount of respirable dust generated.Over 2,000 continuous mining machines (introduced in the 1950's) equipped with conical bits or point attach bits account for well over half of the United States' production from underground coal mines. Today, competition in the coal industry has increased, due mainly to coal market conditions and legal restrictions, thus placing an emphasis upon increasing production, efficiency and health/safety of the workers. Mine operators are always interested in finding the most efficient performance of continuous mining machinery to produce the largest amount of size of coal at the lowest cost. An increase of fine material sent to the cleaning plant can seriously overload the plant to the extent that plant efficiencies deteriorate significantly (1). Also, the difficulty and expense of cleaning very small particles often cannot be done economically and thus, thousands of tons of coal are sent to the refuse pile because of costly or ineffective cleaning facilities. It has been said, ""the efficient extraction of coal or rock implies breakage into a size range that contains a minimum quantity of very small sizes"" (2). All known fragmentation theories concur that more fragmentation requires more energy (3). So, the importance of reducing fines is already evident from an outlook upon efficiency.Now, let's consider another view point., duet generation."

Hydrogen sulfide was decomposed to elemental sulfur in an electrical discharge. With He, N., or Ar diluents, a threshold voltage between 1 and 3 kV was required for the decomposition reaction to occur in a laboratory ozonizer. Above the threshold voltage, the HAS decomposition rate increased with increasing voltage, but the increase was more pronounced with argon diluent than with either nitrogen or helium. In common with other reactions in an electrical discharge, the B2S decomposition decreased with increasing temperature in the range of -410 to +61° C. The reaction did not appear to be rate-controlled by a solid-gas sorption step because the introduction of activated charcoal into the electrical discharge zone did not significantly affect the decomposition yield. In the presence of polymeric chlorofluoro-carbon oil, 90 pct conversion of the 3 pct H2S in helium was obtained at 14 kV, 60 Hz, a 2-mm electrode gap, and a gas-residence time greater than 1 min. Under the same experimental conditions in the absence of oil, the conversion was only about 50 pct.

Measurements of vapor pressure can be used to determine the thermodynamic activities of the components of metallic solutions . The determination of activity by this method requires accurate values for the vapor pressure of the pure component and for its partial pressure above the alloy solution . This investigation was conducted to measure the vapor pressure of liquid manganese for use in future studies of the activity of manganese in various liquid alloys . In related investigations in the Bureau's Pyrometallurgy Laboratory , vapor pressures of copper , iron and nickel have been measured and activit 4 5 6 have been determined in the iron- copper and iron- nickel systems . Difficulties were experienced with manganese which were not encountered in the previous investigations . Manganese oxidizes readily and greater care was needed to maintain an oxygen- and moisture - free atmosphere in the furnace . In addition , liquid manganese wet the refractories and there was a tendency to foam and splash on introduction of the carrier gas . Because of these difficulties several variations in the experimental procedure were studied . These were first tested with silver which has a vapor pressure of the same order of magnitude as manganese but is relatively inert at high temperatures . Although no significant changes in the original procedure resulted from this work, considerable data were obtained for silver and have been included in this report . Bauer and BBrruunnnneerr7/ have reported the only extensive investigation of the vapor pressure of liquid manganese . However , their results are not consistent with the data obtained by McCabe and Hudson for solid manganese . Measurements of the vapor pressure of silver have been reported by McCabe and Birchenal1,2/ Schadel and Birchenall , 10/ Harteck , 11 / Fischer , 12/ and von Wartenberg.13 / Generally , these investigators conducted their measurements at lower temperatures than were used in this study .
