In January, 1922, a conference relative to trailing cables for use with permissible mining machines was held at the Pittsburgh Experiment Station of the U. S. Bureau of Mines. At this conference it was recommended that the bureau take steps to investigate the rubber-sheathed type of cables and to bring about the establishment of a list of approved cables. Effective until such time as a complete investigation could be made, the bureau asked the several manufacturers holding approvals for mining machines to recommend cables for use with their machines. In general the cables recommended were tentatively approved. Due to the lack of available personnel, no actual tests of cables were made until mid-1927. Meanwhile a field investigation of trailing cables was made at 20 mines of three coal companies in western Pennsylvania, and samples of cables were obtained from the manufacturers for laboratory tests. Twenty-five samples of the concentric-type cable, representing the product of five manufacturers, were obtained for the tests. These cables were of four sizes, as follows: 3 cables of No. 2 B & S gage, 17 cables of No. 3 B & S gage, 3 cables of No. 4 B & S gage, and 2 cables of No. 6 B & S gage.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines conducted a laboratory investigation designed to evaluate the stress and deformation characteristics of fully grouted roof bolts subjected to various magnitudes of end loadings. The experiment and subsequent analysis were completed, utilizing axial deformation data obtained -ultrasonically from forty-one 4-ft, grade 40 roof bolts, with a total of 132 measurement locations along the lengths of the bolts. The ultrasonic measurement instrumentation used in this investigation allowed for elongation measurements without requiring extensive bolt modifications. The results indicate that approximately 39 pct o{ the applied end load dissipated within the first 3.4 in of the bolts. However, only 3 pct of the applied load was realized beyond 28 in of the grout column. Data are presented individually for every 6-in increment of bolt length, and analysis was performed using statistical, nonlinear equations developed for 5,000 and 8,000 lb loading conditions.

Two methods were tested for separating sulfur compounds in certain petroleum fractions into types . Such separation is preliminary to identifying the compounds . Each method involved extraction of sulfides from petroleum sulfur concentrates . In the first method , the sulfur concentrate was reacted with methyl - ptoluenesulfonate to form sulfonium compounds from which unreacted portions of the sample were removed by washing with solvent . The sulfides then were recovered by heating the sulfonium compounds with anhydrous triethanolamine . The second method consisted of passing anhydrous hydrogen iodide into a n-butane solution of the sample cooled in dry ice , whereupon the hydrogen iodide adducted with the sulfides to form sulfonium compounds . These adducts separated as crystalline solids or , more frequently , as glassy viscous liquids . The sulfide was regenerated by adding water to the filtered sulfonium compound and was recovered by steam distillation or by extraction with pentane . These methods have been evaluated , using individual pure sulfur compounds and blends of sulfur compounds . They also have been applied successfully to separating sulfides from sulfur concentrates derived from petroleum fractions .

The first signal system used in the Homestake mine between the cagemen and hoisting engineers was a mechanical one. It consisted of small cables or jointed steel rods hung in the cage compartments and counterbalanced with weights or springs. These cables or rod strings were connected to the mechanically operated gongs at the engineers' positions by means of bell cranks and steel wires. At the various stations the bell lines were also fitted with bell cranks and connected levers, so that the cagemen could operate the bells from the stations when they were handling rock or other material and not riding on the cages. Such a system was inherited from the days before extensive electrical development. It served quite well for shallow shafts, but for depths of a thousand feet or more it was very slow and cumbersome. It required consider-able muscular effort to operate it quickly, because of the inertis of its great weight and also because of frictional resistance. The maintenance cost was quite high because of the many wearing parts.

In July 1921 , we were assigned by the U. S. Bureau of Mines to an investigation of milling methods in the Tri - State zinc district ( Missouri -Kaneas- Oklahoma district ) . The work has progressed without interruption , and about onehalf of the funds allotted for it has been expended . This preliminary statement abcut the nature of the work and the results so far obtained , has been prepared for the information of the operators , and through their assistance to insure the greatest possible progress during the remainder of the work . A general survey of the district was made , and many of the mining companies cordially offered the facilities of their plants for the investigation . The work was finally centralized at the plant of the 0. M. Bilharz Mining Co. Its manager , F. H. Gartung, and his successor , O. W. Bilharz , have been especially helpful , also the millmen at this plant and elsewhere have rendered assistance without which the work could not have advanced . The Missouri School of Mines and Metallurgy , Rolla, Mo. , and the Miami School of Mines , Miami , Okla . , have given hearty cooperation . The Webb City Iron Works and the Joplin Supply Co. donated some necessary apparatus .

Hafnium appears to be among the more abundant of the newly discovered elements . Though quite widely distributed in nature , its compounds chemically so resembled those of zirconium , its sister element , that it escaped detection until 1923 , when Coster and Hevesy announced the discovery of the element , to which they gave the name of " hafnium " , from Hafniae , the Latin name for Copenhagen , where their research work was performed . Hafnium has so far been found only as a minor constituent of zirconium minerals . Zirconium as an element was discovered more than 140 years ago , but only a few unimportant uses were found for the metal or its compounds until some 18 years ago ; it is still classed among the rarer commercial metals . It is not surprising , therefore , that hafnium has not yet found a definite place for itself in industry . Nevertheless it has commanded a considerable interest among scientists ; and in 1930 some 70 grams of perfectly pure oxide of hafnium were prepared in Europe . A commercial future for hafnium is already glimpsed in the radio industry , and its high melting point and electronic emissivity have already led to the taking out of patents for its use in radio tubes and incandescent electric lamp filaments and for the cathode surfaces of devices such as X- ray tubes and rectifiers .

Future coal mining systems will be able to cut from crosscut to crosscut where advances could exceed 100 ft. However, limitations arise when ventilating such mining systems. In deep advance mining, there would be no workers at the face to advance ventilation tubing or curtain manually. Traditional methods also provide no means for maintaining face ventilation after the miner backs away from the face. U.S. Bureau of Mines research is studying means to provide effective ventilation at cut depths beyond the current limit of 4D ft. Several innovative ventilation schemes are currently being considered. One such method is the use of a jet fan to ventilate a deep cut. A jet fan is simply a freestanding fan using little or no ducting to direct the ventilation flow. Jet fan testing in a 90-ft entry revealed that higher exit velocities and greater penetration depth occurred when various configurations were used to confine and direct the air flow. Additional testing also indicated that 2,200 cfm of fresh air was delivered to the face? 90 ft distant when a check curtain was used to limit entrainment around the fan. Without this curtain, this quantity dropped to only 1,000 cfm. This testing indicated that a jet fan was capable of providing ventilation to a distant face area. It also highlighted potential problems, such as recirculation at the fan and reentrainment in the jet flow. Despite these potential problems, jet fans may be adequate for ventilating cuts exceeding 4D ft.

"The interaction of amorphous 1ilica particles with several hydrogen bonding agents (H2O, C2H5OH, C7H2NO) was investigated by monitoring the changes in the bulk and surface IR vibrational modes of silica using photoacoustic spectroscopy. It is argued that the intensity of the silanol band at 3747 cm-1 provides (an inverse) quantitative measure of the interaction or surface groups, along with the shift in the broad hydroxyl band, the interaction following the order C7H2NO > C2H5OH > H2O. Index Headings: Silica; Surface vibrational modes; Photoacoustic spectroscopy; Hydrogen bonding agents.INTRODUCTIONThe use of m spectroscopy to study the adsorption on solid surfaces is well documented in the literature.1 2 For example, hydroxylation of a clean silica surface results in the formation of the free silanol group Si-OH, with a sharp IR band near 3747 cm-1• Further hydroxylation produces a broad band near 3500 cm-1, which is believed to result from various hydrogen-bonded silanol bands leading to a multilayered surface structure of few nm.3-5 Earlier studies had indicated a relationship between the surface silanol band and various chemical activities of silica such as cytotoxicity, 7- 9 catalysis, 10-12 and others.13 Recent studies from our group14-in which the intensity of the silanol band and cytotoxicity of silica, heat-treated at various temperatures up to 1095°C, were investigated have provided a strong correlation between cytotoxicity and intensity of the silanol band.Coating of silica by PVPNO (polyvinyl-2-pyridine N-oxide with the empirical formula C7H8NO), a strong hydrogen bonding agent, is known to reduce the cytotoxicity of silica, presumably by chemically blocking the silanol groups from phospholipids.15 This interaction of the hydrogen bonding agents with the silica can be studied by m spectroscopy, and Knozinger16 and Rouxlet and Semples11 have used transmission m spectroscopy to study the effect of various chemicals on the surface IR modes of silica. However, one of the major disadvantages of transmission IR spectroscopy is that the sample preparation (grinding and mixing with KBr and pelletizing) usually distorts the surface modes (see, e.g., Ref. 14) and there is always a doubt about the effect of the sample preparation on the measured properties. In recent years, photoacoustic (PA) spectroscopy has become the technique of choice for studying the IR spectra of samples in their natural state, since no sample preparation is necessary.18•19 Moreover, according to a recent paper, 20 the relative intensity of the surface modes in PA spectroscopy of silica particles is much higher than that in transmission FT-IR spectroscopy. Consequently PA spectroscopy is ideal for studying the surface chemistry. In this work, we have used PA spectroscopy to investigate the interaction of three hydrogen bonding agents (C7H8NO, C2H50H, and H20) with the silica surface by monitoring changes in the surface m modes. Our results show that the surface IR modes get perturbed to a larger extent than the bulk IR modes in interaction with the hydrogen bonding agents. Moreover, whereas in the earlier studies, the shift of the broad silanol band near 3500 cm-1 was used as a measure of the interaction with hydrogen bonding agents,16•17 here we show that the relative decrease in the intensity of the sharp silanol band near 3747 cm-1 also serves as a quantitative parameter for the relative surface coverage and surface modification. This work was undertaken to determine the feasibility of making mixed diborides of two metals directly from the metal oxides , boron carbide and carbon . The diborides (Ti , V ) , B₂ , (Ti , Cb) B₂ , and ( Ti , Ta ) B₂ were prepared in a crucible resistance furnace at 2,100 ° C , and X- ray- diffraction analyses showed each was a homogeneous solid solution containing approximately equal molar contents of the given diborides . The diboride powders were cold - pressed ; sintered to 2,300 ° C , and evaluated for mechanical strength , rate of oxidation , and resistance to molten metals . The diboride ( Ti , Ta ) B₂ exhibited the best mechanical properties ; the diboride ( Ti , Cb ) B₂ , the lowest cumulative rate of oxidation . The mixtures were stable in the presence of molten aluminum and copper but were attacked by molten Ti , Zr , and Cr .

The purpose of the study described in this publication is to develop methods for recovering simple master alloys or single metal components from discarded and scrapped S-816 alloy, The Bureau of Mines started this investigation late in 1955 after the need became apparent for a method of reclaiming high-temperature alloys from an ever-increasing accumulation of rejected and wornout jet engine turbine buckets. Laboratory studies showed the following: (1) Pyrometallurgical separations are not selective enough, (2) several methods can be used for effective chemical dissolution of the major constituents of the alloy, (3) a master alloy or complex salts of cobalt and nickel can be separated, (4) chromium, contaminated by several other metals, may be segregated, and (5) more time and effort need to be expended in separating the minor constituents and improving the purity of the major metals removed. Difficult and incomplete chemical separations were attributed to the complexity of alloy composition, as were the long tedious chemical analyses o' products. For determination of several of the metallic components, standard methods of separation and routine analytical procedures had to be considerably modified to achieve satisfactory results. The overall technical problems involved in separating S-816 components do not appear to be insurmountable; however, refinement of several of the methods used in this investigation is desirable.

The Bureau of Mines investigated the up-and-down method with factorial designs to determine if shorter, and therefore less costly, trial sequences could be used. Although sequences of 50 trials are usually recommended, sequences of 20 trials were arbitrarily chosen for the experiments with permissible coal mine explosives described in this report. These explosives were fired from a cannon pointed into a flammable natural gas-air atmosphere at the Bureau of Mines Explosives Research Center gallery to ascertain their safety properties. The investigation demonstrated that the shorter sequences led to useful conclusions with a reduction in cost of the experimental program.

The Bureau of Mines has developed an automated reflectance scanning microscope system, primarily for determination of volume proportions, size distribution, and mode of association of the physical (petrographic) components of coals. The process, which is potentially more rapid and objective and less tedious than a visual microscopic procedure, involves magnetic tape recording of several millions of reflectance readings on micro-meter sized areas of polished coal surface and computer analysis and interpretation of some characteristics of the coal components. The system was tested in a study of pyrite distribution in steam coals. The application was essentially successful, but defects in polished pyrite surface characteristics and problems in adequate sampling prevented completely satisfactory results. Pyrite con-tent and coal-pyrite particle association could be determined nearly as well as by visual microscopy, but size distribution data were less acceptable.

While analyzing synthesis gas produced from coal, the Bureau of Mines found that conventional procedures for naphthalene determination were difficult and time consuming. The Bureau developed a rapid and sensitive turbidimetric procedure, which requires only simple instruments and hence can be used in plant-control laboratories. The gas is passed through a saturated aqueous solution of picric acid at 3° to 4° C. whose turbidity is then measured at room temperature. A dispersing agent is added to prevent coagulation of the suspension on warming. Only about 1 mg. (0.015 grain) of naphthalene need be absorbed, and precision and sensitivity are a few ten-thousandths of a grain, or a few hundredths of a grain per 100 cubic feet. The determination can be completed less than 10 minutes after absorption. INTRODUCTION One of the functions of the Branch of Coal Gasification, Bureau of Mines, Morgantown, W. Va., is to develop economical methods for manufacturing, from coal, a mixture of hydrogen and carbon monoxide for producing hydrogen, methane, and other gaseous fuels. This raw gas may contain many impurities, including naphthalene. This impurity is usually determined by first forming naphthalene picrate in a water solution of picric acid, separating the picrate, and titrating the unreacted picric acid or the picrate itself.

The Bureau of Mines conducted petrographic classification and flotation studies to determine if acid-grade concentrates could be obtained from individual and composite samples from the Meade Peak member of the Phosphoria Formation, Idaho. The petrographic studies were made to determine the effect of compositional features on concentration of phosphates. The ore grade, ovule size, and clay content were the main features affecting grade and recovery of phosphate. Flotation results on roasted ore with a tall oil emulsion scheme showed that beds containing over 10 percent P2O5 could be beneficiated and composited with the two high-grade beds to produce a composite concentrate containing 31.9 percent 05 at 84.3 percent recovery. Treatment of these intermediate-grade phosphate beds by flotation increased ore reserves over 200 percent and increased the ore-to-waste ratio in the ore zone from 1:5.7 to 1:0.27.

The Bureau of Mines investigated the kinetics of reduction of wustite and magnetite with carbon monoxide. A mechanism was postulated wherein the interaction between gaseous and absorbed carbon monoxide appears to be the rate-determining process. This mechanism fully accounts for the experimental rate equation JL.h relates th velocity of reduction to the pressure of the reducing gas at constant temperature. It also explains the variability of the heat of activation of the reduction process with the state of aggregation of the oxide material. The integrated rate equation is in perfect agreement with the experimental reduction-time curves.

Natural gas is a general term applied to the gas obtained from oil or gas wells. It is the most widely used of all gaseous fuels. The principal disadvantage in the use of this and other gaseous fuels is the difficulty encountered in the storage and transportation of large quantities in the gas state. Handling in the liquid state is possible, but reduced temperatures are required since methane (table 1) is the principal component of most natural gases that are used as fuels. Actually, liquid storage has been utilized both here and abroad;3 however, the Cleveland disaster4 has pointed out the need for a critical evaluation of the hazards involved in the storage of this cryogenic fuel. Accordingly, a program was undertaken to obtain basic data that could be used to assess these hazards. In this report, the factors to be considered in an evaluation of the fire and explosion hazards associated with any fuel are each discussed briefly. These factors are then used to assist in the design of experiments for the evaluation of the hazards associated with liquefied natural gas (LNG) relative to those associated with other common fuels. Experiments have been conducted on the vaporization of LNG, the mixing of LNG vapors with air, the effect of temperature and nitrogen dilution on the limits of flammability of methane in air, the burning rates of LNG and other fuels, flame radiation, and extinguishment of fires above liquid pools. Based on the results of these experiments, LNG can be stored safely in suitably designed above-ground tanks surrounded by earthen dikes in much the same manner as gasoline.

This paper describing the operations of the Cresson mine of the Cresson Consolidated Gold Mining & Milling Co. at Cripple Creek, Colorado, is one of a series of papers on mining methods and costs being prepared by the United States Bureau of Mines. The Cresson has recently been the most, important mine in the Cripple Creed district. During 1932 and 1933 an average of 230 tons of new ore (excluding dump material) that averaged about $10 in gold was shipped daily; 150 to 175 men were employed. Stoping was by the shrinkage method exclusively. The ore was screened washed, and hand-sorted at the surface and shipped to the Golden Cycle mill at Colorado Springs for treatment. A considerable proportion of the production was made by lessees working under the so-called "split-check" system. The combination of flotation and chemical processing methods presented in this report of the Bureau of Mines enabled treatment of typical low-grade ferberite ores from the Boulder County, Colo. area, to produce specification-grade synthetic scheelite. The overall recovery from ore to synthetic scheelite was 87 percent, based on a flotation recovery of 93 percent and a similar recovery in chemical processing. Preliminary mineral dressing studies revealed that the physical and mineralogical nature of typical ferberite ores precluded high recovery of tungsten in plus 60-percent-W03-grade products by these methods. Therefore, the flotation research was focused on attaining plus 90-percent recovery in a concentrate containing 10 percent W03. Detailed studies were made (1) to establish optimum grinding conditions for obtaining adequate mineral liberation, (2) to develop collecting and modifying reagent combinations that would enable controllable selective flotation, and (3) to define the influence of different pulp solids, temperature, pH, and time for conditioning and for the rougher and cleaner flotation stages.

Diesel-powered equipment operating in a gassy underground mine could conceivably ingest a methane-air mixture from the mine atmosphere that could cause the diesel engine to overspeed, or exceed its rated speed. Engine overspeed, particularly if extreme (engine runaway), could result in personal injury, a possible mine explosion, and/or catastrophic engine failure. In this report, the Bureau of Mines reviews the literature on the potential hazards of methane-induced diesel engine overspeed. Also included are the Bureau's findings from consultations with representatives of the diesel engine industry to determine the specific engine behavior that could he expected under the overspeed condition. The report summarizes data on mine accidents involving methane, discusses results of tests on the compression ignition of methane in diesel engines, and examines fuel governors and intake-air-cutoff devices, two kinds of devices used to prevent overspeed. Analysis of the information gathered suggests that the conditions necessary to cause a diesel engine to overspeed uncontrollably are not likely to occur, particularly if the engine is equipped with flame-proofing devices. The available literature and lack of actual overspeed case histories suggest that the safety devices currently in use are sufficient to prevent diesel engine overspeed.

[There have been large increases in the oil production and casing-head gas production of certain wells on the Quinn dome (northern part of the Lyons-Quinn field of Oklahoma) caused by large volumes of gas under high pressure entering Vie productive oil sand, The oil production of sore of the leases in this part of the field temporarily increased over 100 per cent within a few days after gas entered the oil sand among the leases that had the greatest increases in oil production wore those on which no gas wells were drilled but which were located up-elope on the structure in reference to gas wells on adjoining properties. It is conservatively estimated that 1,444,000,000, cubic feet of gas entered the productive oil sand and, up to January 1, 1924, caused an increase of about 950,000 barrels of oil from this sand. The casing-held gas volumes of a number of wells producing between 25,000 and 75,000 cubic feet of gas per day increased to several hundred thousand cubic feet and a few walls increased to nearly two million cubic feet per day after extraneous gas entered the oil sand from which the wells were producing.]
