In 1985, at the request of the Bureau of Land Management, the Bureau of Mines studied a 50,57U-acre portion of the 90,345-acre Twin Peaks Wilderness Study Area (CA-020-619A) in order to evaluate its identified resources. The area studied is located about 45 miles northeast of Susanville, CA, in Lassen County, CA, and Washoe County, NV. The area is underlain by Tertiary volcanic, volcaniclastic, and intrusive rocks. Quaternary stream, lake, and landslide deposits overlie the older rock. There are no mines or mining claims in the study area. One mineral resource, pozzolan, was identified. Mining claims, inactive in 1985, have been staked adjacent to or near the northwest corner of, and also southeast of, the study area. Examination and sampling of 17 mineralized sites, delineated mostly by prior geochemical surveys, showed at least 30 million tons of subeconomic pozzolan resources and small or low-grade occurrences of gold, silver, copper, lead, zinc, nickel, molybdenum, zeolites and clay.

This paper is one of a series being prepared by the Minerals Division of the Bureau of Mines on mining and milling methods and practices at various mines in the United States. It describes such methods at the Caselton mine of the Combined Metals Reduction Co. The Caselton mine and mill are in secs. 28 and 29, T. 1 N., R. 67 E., M. D. B. & M., Lincoln County, Nev., about 10 miles by paved highway south- west of Pioche, Nev. (fig. 1). the history of the district and company This circular summarizos operations, describes physical features, labor and living conditions, the geology, ore deposits, and the ore. Prospecting and exploration methods are outlined, and shaft sinking, drifting and crosscutting, and raising are covered under development methods. In the soction on mining mothods, stoping and slushing are discussed, following which are descriptions of underground transportation, hoisting, ventilation, drainage and sampling, and surveying. The surface and crushing plants are described, and milling practices are presented in dotail with explanation of the filter plant and assay office. Safoty practices and the company organization are described in the concluding sections of the circular.

Mex., is one of a series being prepared by the Mining Branch, of the Bureau of Mines on mining practices and methods in various mining districts of the United States. 4, T. The mine and plant of Potash Co. of America are situated in sec. 20 S., R.. 30, E.,. N. M. P. M., about 22 miles by paved road northeast of Carlsbad (fig. 1). A spur line of the Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe Railroad also connects the mine with Carlsbad.

Data on the cost and quantity available were developed for rutile (TiO2), which is potentially recoverable as a byproduct at sand-washing plants in the Southeastern States of Alabama, Georgia, North Carolina, and South Carolina. Baaed on 1969 production data, an estimated 4,300 tons of rutile could be recovered annually from plants that process more than 25,000 tons of sand per year. Rutile prices at which this resource would be available ranged upward from $262 per ton, compared with the current market value of $185 per ton.

"This paper presents an analysis of respiraple dust generation due to the action of a continuous miner. Underground coal cutting by a drum-type continuous miner was simulated in the laboratory using a specially designed unique automated rotary coal cutting simulator (ARCCS). An analysis of -400 mesh particles was done on gravity collected material. Samples of entrained dust were collected through the use of cascade impactors. Both samples were analyzed for size distribution and particle shape. Using the simulated coal cutter permitted variation of operating and in-situ parameters to provide information on the effects on generation of -400 mesh particles. In these tests coal blocks with an approximate dimension of 18 in. x 15 in. x 6 in. (45.7 cm x 38.1 cm x 15.2 cm) were first subjected to confining pressures, equivalent to in-situ conditions. Such blocks were then cut by the cutting head of the ARCCS, thus simulating the action of the continuous miner in underground coal mining. During the tests under a particular set of in-situ and operating parameters a number of other parameters such as 1) penetration of bit into coal, 2) penetration resistance (thrust and cutting pressures), 3) rotating velocity of cutting head, and 4) acoustic emission activity in the coal block were monitored. After each cutting cycle the fractured surfaces were photo¬graphed and a velocity survey was conducted by using a sonic technique. At the end of each experiment the cutting paths of the bits in coal were photographed using an optical microscope with an attached camera.IntroductionThe continuous-mining machines introduced in the 1950's now account for more than half the production of coal from underground mines. Unfortunately, these continuous miners, designed for increased productivity, have also increased the concentration of respirable dust in mines. As a result, the Federal Coal sine Health and Safety Act of 1969 was enacted to enforce on the coal operators that the airborne respirable dust not exceed 2 mg/m3, and was intended to reduce the incidence of coal workers pneumo-coniosis. This plus the other aspects of the legislation and the subsequent monitoring and enforcement by MSHA made it very imperative that the coal operators provide a relatively healthier and safer working environment for the coal miners. Since 1970, the Federal government has paid over 11.7 billion dollars to more than 470,000 miners with coal workers pneumoconiosis and their survivors (Newmeyer, 1981). These regulations, coupled with the assessment of the continuing burden on miners, the mining industry and taxpayers appear to have provided an impetus for the mining community towards comprehending the different parameters that influence dust generation and entrainment."

This paper on the physical and chemical properties of crude oils from California fields is one of a series of reports on the on the districts of the United States. The paper includes a short discussion of results, tabular data, and individual analyses of eight. California crudes. Analyses of other crude oils from California have been published it Reports of Investigations 2595, 2608, and 2846. The samples were obtained by members of the San Francisco office of the Bureau of Mines. The collecting 65 samples was facilitated by the courtesy of representatives of oil companies in California. The methods used in testing and analyzing the samples are described in detail in Bureau of Mines Bulletin 207. A discussion of the interpretation of crude-oil analyses, as made by the Bureau of Mines, is given in Bureau of Mines Report of Investigations 2806.

An exhaustive program of geologic studies and mapping has been conducted by the Geological Survey in the Iron River district of Michigan since May 1943. Means of contributing to the success of these studies were sought by the Bureau of Mines, and eventually a program involving geophysical studies and core-drilling was undertaken in the area. All of the work was done either to develop data that would contribute directly to geologic studies or to investigate geophysical methods that might be used as a primary means for the discovery of minable iron ore.

The Coeur d'Alene Mining District of northern Idaho is remarkable for its number of large ore bodies and for the amount of its historical production of lead, zinc and silver (Fig. 1). Since veins were first discovered in 1884, more than 127 Mt (140 million st) of ore have been produced from narrow, high-grade veins. Mining continues at the Lucky Friday, Galena and Sunshine mines (Fig. 2). All have been in production for decades. At these mines, more efficient mining and exploration techniques have reduced costs while adding significant new reserves. Even the old Bunker Hill Mine, where ore was first found in 1875, continues operation on a limited basis, partly involving production of world-class pyromorphite specimens. Until recently, the Coeur Mine was also a profitable silver producer. Other large producers have included the Star-Morning, Hecla, Page, Standard-Mammoth, Hercules and Gold Hunter mines (Fig. 2). The first deposits were discovered by prospectors who spilled over from the Murray gold mining district, 24 km (15 miles) to the north. The Bunker Hill Mine was founded the year after the first veins were discovered. Bunker Hill has now operated for more than 100 years. Production includes 2.3 Mt (2.6 million st) of lead, 1.1 Mt (1.2 million st) of zinc and 4.1 kt (132 million oz) of silver. Total district production through 1996 (Springer, 1997) amounted to 7.3 Mt (8.1 million st) of lead, 3 Mt (3.3 million st) of zinc, and 34.5 kt (1.109 billion oz) of silver. This record establishes the district as the largest recorded producer of silver in the world, while also yielding major quantities of lead and zinc. Only Potosi, Bolivia, may have produced more silver, although records are unclear. Despite the district's longevity, historic production and current activity, the published literature on the district lags behind with regard to recent concepts of district geology. The most recent comprehensive US Geological Survey (USGS) bulletins (Hobbs et al., 1965; Fryklund, 1964) are dated. Much research in the last half century has been short-lived or geographically restricted because the district is large and its geology is complex - and even this research tends to remain unpublished. The Bureau of Mines has been engaged in a program to increase the utilization of chromium by providing samples to individuals and institutions requesting chromium for research investigations. This report consists of a tabulation of the disposition of chromium samples distributed from July 1953 through June 1961; 109 requests for chromium were answered by providing chromium as electrolytic plate, powder, or wrought forms. The demand for samples reached a peak in fiscal year 1959 and declined to a relatively low level in fiscal year 1961. The largest number of requests came from individuals engaged in mechanical property studies; there were also many requests from those concerned with vaporized metal and physical properties studies. Most noteworthy application for chromium was the experimental use of the radioactive form, Cr61 in radiotherapy of cancer.

During the investigations of the occurrence of manganese in the Western United States, a Bureau of Mines examining engineer collected samples frame two properties in Beaver County, Utah. As the ores were too low in grade to be acceptable by manufacturers of ferromanganese, beneficiation studies were made to determine the amenability of the ores to concentration. The Steelville property is about 37 miles southwest of Frisco, Utah. The deposit is an example of manganese occurring as a replacement of limestone in a bedded vein or as layers in limestone associated with shale and rock decomposition products. The Susie Q deposit, about 33 miles southwest of Milford, Utah, is also a tabular replacement deposit in limestone, apparently of limited extent. Test work was done on representative samples of 2-ton lots obtained by the examining 'engineer from each of the properties mentioned.

The thermodynamic properties of aegirine, of composition [(Na0.869Fe30+7362 Fe20+16Mn0.03Ca0.1121)(A10.141Sil 9738)(06)], were experimentally determined at the Bureau of Mines as part of its efforts to advance minerals technology. The standard enthalpy of formation determined by hydrofluoric acid solution calorimetry is AHf298 = -641.12±0.73 kcal/mol. The standard enthalpy of formation from the oxides is AH298 = -37.136±0.509 kcal/mol. Low-temperature heat capacities were determined by adiabatic calorimetry from 19.1 to 304.6 K. The derived standard entropy is S298 = 38.03±0.14 cal/mol?K. The heat capacity was measured over the range 348 to 1,198 K by differential scanning calorimetry. These experimentally determined data were combined with data from the litera¬ture to calculate the Gibbs energies of formation and equilibrium constants of form¬ation over the temperature range of the measurements. Standard enthalpies of forma¬tion are given as functions of temperature. The standard Gibbs energy of formation at 298.15 K is AGf298 = -600.36 kcal/mol.

The Bureau of Mines initiated a field test of underground coal gasitication to investigate the technologic feasibility of gasifying a subbituminous coal. The test site is near the town of Hanna, Wyo., about 70 miles northwest of Laramie. Preliminary results of the experiment are described. The coal was ignited in the central well of a 16-well pattern. Both forward and reverse combustion techniques were attempted to prepare a path of sufficient permeability to permit the high air injection rat s necessary for gasification. Gasification between linked wellbores was sustained for periods as long as 3 months. Hydrogen-rich gas having a heating value of 100 to 150 Btu/scf was produced.

In 2007, a total of 2,030 coal mining operations reported employment to the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA).1 Coal mines comprised 13.7% of all mining operations. ? Bituminous mines comprised 92.4% (n=1,875) and anthracite mines 7.6% (n=155) of coal mining operations. ? Approximately 72% of all coal mines were located in three states: Kentucky (28.4%), West Virginia (22.6%), and Pennsylvania (20.5%).

This paper, describing the mining practices and methods at the mine of the Molyb¬denum Corporation of America, is one of a series of similar papers on mining methods in the various mines of the United States being prepared by the Bureau of Mines. The mine of the Molybdenum Corporation of America is in the Red River mining dis¬trict, Taos County, northern New Mexico (fig. 1), The mill and camp are in the valley of Red River, about 7 miles east of the town of Questa; the mine is 1 ¼ miles away, in Sulphur Gulch, a tributary of Red River. The mine is about 600 feet higher than the mill, at an altitude of about 8,700 feet. The climate is cold in winter, but does not interfere serious¬ly with continuous operation. The mine normally produces about 40 tons of sulphide molybde¬num ore per day, which is concentrated at the local mill and chipped to the plant of the Molybdenum Corporation at Washington, Pa.; there it is made into either ferromelybdenum or "molyte" (calcium molybdate), for use in alloys. The ore is mined from narrow, irregular veins by the cut-and-fill method. About 65 men are normally employed underground and on the surface at the mine.

Preliminary evidence indicated that the Chattanooga Shale might constitute a potential vast low-grade source of uranium. Investigation by core drilling indicated that while the Chattanooga Shale may constitute a resource for the future, the very low (0.006 percent) average uranium content is not economic when compared with the relatively higher grade western ores. A total of approximately 12,000 feet of test drilling was done in 72 drillholes, and large samples were mined for extractive and metallurgical testing. An experimental mine site was selected on the basis of the drilling project.

The Bureau of Mines has investigated the availability of columbium from 19 deposits (3 producers and 16 nonproducers) in 7 market economy countries (MEC?s). Brazil has the largest recoverable columbium resource, posessing approximately 2.39 million metric tons Wmt), or 69 pet of the MEC total (3.47 Mmt). The Western Hemisphere countries of Brazil, Canada and the United States contain 3.14 Mrnt of recoverable columbium or 90 pnt of the MEC total. Columbium recovered as a byproduct of tin mining is not included as part of MEC resources in this study. Currently producing mines are Araxa and Catalao in Brazil, and Niobec in Canada, These three mines have 2.42 Mmt of recoverable resources or approximately 69 pct of the MEC total. It is estimated that these mines, operating at full capacity, could satisfy cumulative MEC demand (based on an annual growth rate of 5.1 pct) for the next 20 yr. The United States is totally dependent upon foreign sources for its columbium supply. The majority of U.S. columbium is imported from Brazil in the form of steelmaking- grade ferrocolumbium. Canada has been the sole source of pyrochlore concentrates since Brazil discontinued exports in 1981. The United States also imports small (but important) quantities of columbium as columbite concentrates from Nigeria and Brazil, as columbite contained in tin slags from Thailand and Malaysia, and as synthetic concentrates from the Federal Republic of Germany.

This investigation, which began 90 minutes after the February 3, 1995, seismic event, has benefitted from the assistance of a large number of individuals. The U.S. Bureau of Mines evaluated the performance of a catalyzed diesel particulate filter (CDPF) and a CDPF combined with a diesel oxidation catalyst (DOC) at two metal mines. This report describes the results from the two field evaluations. The CDPF-DOC was installed on a load-haul-dump (LHD) powered by a 175-kW, prechambered, turbocharged engine. This system reduced diesel particulate matter (DPM) concentrations by 71±28 pet, as determined by size-selective sampling with gravimetric analysis, and by 71±29 pet, as determined by respirable combustible dust (RCD) analysis at the vehicle operator's location. The CDPF was installed on a diesel-hydraulic, roof-bolting jumbo, powered by a 172-kW engine. The CDPF reduced DPM concentrations by 72±21 pet, as determined by size-selective sampling with gravimetric analysis, and by 62±25 pet, as determined by RCD analysis at the vehicle operator's location. Underground evaluation was more difficult because of frequent movement by the roof-bolting jumbo, variation in daily workload, tremendous fluctuation in ventilation airflow rates, and use of a high sulfur diesel fuel, which promotes the formation of sulfate particles, decreases filtration efficiency, and hastens the deterioration of the catalyst.
