The mine of the Alpha Portland Cement ..Co., Iroaton, Ohio, ..working in. a. bed of limestone 96 feet thick at a depth of approximately 510 feet below the surface, has established a won¬ derful safety record, having operated 6 years—frcra September 21, 1926,. to September 21, 1932 - without a lost-time accident. This mine, with 61 to 86 employees (average 68) and daily output of 1,000 to 1,200 tons of limestone, operated 1,041 days during the 6-year period, or the equivalent of 578,894 man-hours of exposure. ...... ... . Immediately above the limestone is a 20-foot .bed of hard..sandstone.. At present about 10 feet of limestone is left up as. a roof and.about. 42 feet is being extracted. Of the lower portion of the bed it is believed that about. 25 feet. ..immediately below . the .present workings is suitable for cement and will be extracted later. The mine workings are reached by two rectangular concrete shafts, one a 2-compartment hoisting shaft and the other a 2-compartment air and escape shaft- In the latter shaft one compartment is used as an airway and the other, as a cage compartment fo.r a man and material cage. .. . - . The tipples at both the air shaft: and. hoisting shaft are-of steel. The.ground landings at both shafts are fenced in with hand-operated gates in front of the cage compartments.- The two shafts and the crushing plant, which .is.a part of the hoisting shaft-tipple structure, are adjacent to the mill buildings. The rock is hoisted on self-dumping cages in 4 ton capacity, end-gate, steel cars. An electric hoist with automatic overwind device is used at both the main shaft and air shaft. The controls for the main hoist are in the tipple where the engineman is stationed and from which point he has an unobstructed view of both the ground, landing and the cage coming into the dump.

This U.S. Bureau of Mines report examines the causes and consequences of longwall face sloughage. Theoretical relationships were developed to evaluate mechanisms that produce slough age. From these relationships, contributory factors were identified for further analysis in field efforts. A survey identified 12 mine sites with sloughage problems, and these were investigated. From these studies, it was determined that the depth of cover and mining height are the two most significant factors causing sloughage on longwall faces. Coalbed friability and cleat orientation also were found to be significant factors in promoting sloughage. It was concluded that sloughage is primarily a problem in thicker seams or seams with friable coalbeds, and that the problem is more severe as the depth of cover increases. Sloughage also was found to increase as the rate of mining decreased. Observations indicated that face slough age can increase dust generation significantly on longwall faces. Current efforts to control dust generation from longwall sloughage are described.

A major problem encountered in dump leaching operations is the plugging of both the dump and the piping by precipitated iron compounds. Bureau of Mines research to obtain basic data on agitation leaching and dump leaching methods has shown that the addition of organic chelating reagents can significantly enhance the lixiviant permeability through the ore and the concentration of the metal values in the liquor. For example, the addition of 5 giL citric acid (CA) to a conventional sulfuric acid lixiviant almost doubled the fluid flow rate through 5-cm-diameter laboratory columns containing copper ore. After 185 h of per-colation leaching, the metal concentrations with (and without, in parentheses) CA were 1.7 (1.5) giL Cu, 200 (70) ppm Mn, 160 (40) ppm AI, and 6 (3) ppm Co. The enhancement of metal concentrations with chelating reagents such as CA was confirmed by determining the solubil-ity of several metal ions as functions of pH and chelating reagent con-centration. When ferric ions became insoluble at pH values above 3, the concentrations of other ions also decreased. The addition of che-lating reagents kept iron, as well as the other dissolved metals, in solution even at pH values as high as 5. Citric acid was a more effective chelating reagent than gluconic acid, oxalic acid, or sodium lignin sulfonate.

The property being worked by the Lewiston dredge of Placer Development (Ltd.) is on the Trinity River in Trinity County, Calif., about 9 miles north of the town of Lewiston (see fig. 1). The nearest rail point is at Rending, Calif., which is exactly 50 miles bar road from the dredge camp. Recently a very good section of State highway has been constructed from Redding to Weaverville, and it is now possible to use this highway for 35 miles of the distance between the dredging property and Redding. The remaining 15 miles, however, are over ordinary dirt road. No trouble is experienced in reaching the property except for a few weeks during the middle of the winter when snowstorms may make travel difficult but not impossible. At present the property consists of about 500 acres of patented land, which extends for about 3 miles along the main Trinity River and Stuart's Pork. It is being worked with one 7-cubic foot, Bucyrus-type dredge, which has an average monthly capacity of about 100,000 cubic yards. To the end of 1931 approximately 10,000,000 cubic yards of gravel had been dredged.

"Ventilation is one of the most important features of coal mining, and if a mine is exceptionally gassy it is often difficult to ventilate it in such a way as to make it safe. The general system of splitting the main air current so that two, three, or more sets of room entries are ventilated by the same current of air does not provide a safe method if non-permissible electrical equipment, such as cable-reel, crab-reel, or trolley locomotives are used on gathering haulage, or if open-type hoist or pump motors are used. The problem has been greatly simplified at the Crucible mine of the Crucible Fuel Co. at Crucible, Pennsylvania.The system is not only applicable to the room-and-pillar method of mining, but it may be adopted for any panel system of mining. There also appears to be a definite application in mechanized mining, where the rapid extraction often results in inadequate attention to ventilation and where the gassiness of the section generally increases because, as compared to hand loading, the methane has less time to drain off. This NIOSH Toolbox Training program contains 52 different modules designed to stimulate safety discussions among your employees. Each module is intended to be completed in roughly 10 or 15 minutes, so a Toolbox Training session can be conducted once a week for the entire year. Each session counts toward your employee’s 8-hour annual MSHA refresher training, thus saving an entire day of work.. The modules are used to refresh employees on the procedures, policies, and practices of working safely at a specific mine site and can easily be tailored to fit conditions and situations found on your property. Every module follows the same format, so that as the weeks pass, miners will start to approach every safety situation in the same way. A typical Toolbox Training session contains five basic steps that cover all the information in the module. 1. Identification of the hazard and discussions about the types of injuries typically associated with the hazard. 2. Discussions of some of the causes of the hazard. The MSHA example included with each module should be referenced. 3. After the hazard and accident has been explained and understood, discussions about best practices and tips for avoiding a similar accident. 4. Review of similar conditions or near misses from your mine site using the leading questions on the form to start a discussion. Specific examples of equipment or structures on the site that could lead to the same accident should be discussed. The blank space on the module is used to add your own remarks and questions to supplement the given information. 5. Miners fill out the training record on the back of the form with name, initials, and date of training session. The modules are designed to be kept in a standard three-ring binder and easily photocopied. This way, the same set of modules can be used for years to come. A blank form is included that can be used to create more Toolbox Training modules. The key component of Toolbox Training is to start a discussion among employees that will allow them to see the hazards around them every day and respond to these hazards in a safe and consistent manner. To start a discussion, ask questions that need more than a one-word response. Get the miners to talk about similar situations from their own experiences and give suggestions about how to fix the hazards around them. Toolbox Training is a quick and effective way to cover specific mining hazards, but it only works if miners are involved in the discussion.

The Bureau of Mines investigated the concentration and distribution of precious metals in the various fractions produced from mechanical processing of obsolete military electronic scrap. Whole avionic units, printed circuit cards, and electrical connectors were processed and analyzed. Materials recovered included baghouse lights, wire bundles, mag-netics, and metal concentrates from eddy-current and high-tension sepa-ration. Higher value fractions were processed by a commercial toll refiner for recovery of gold and silver. Lower value fractions were analyzed by the Bureau. Three fractions, the lights, wire bundles, and metallics from high-tension separation, contained most of the precious metals. Depending on the type of scrap feed, these fractions represented 34 to 60 pct of the original sample weight. Collectively, they represented 68 to 97 pct and 75 to 98 pct of the contained gold and silver, respectively.

The Strawberry tungsten mine is in the Jackass Mining District, in an isolated portion of eastern Madera County, near the southeast corner of the Yosemite National Park. The deposit was discovered in 1941, and production started in 1943 when the mill was completed. With the exception of 1946 and 1947, production has been continuous. The area in the vicinity of the mine is granite containing islands of sedimentary beds highly altered by metamorphism that resulted from the intrusion of acid igneous rock. Schoelite occurs in almost vertical lenses of tactite between the limestone and the granite.

This Bureau of Mines study, part of a broad program of research in air pollution related to minerals, was conducted to determine the nature and extent of the poisoning of catalysts when used to remove certain air pollutants from exhaust gases. The poisoning examined in this investigation occurs when leaded gasoline is used as a fuel for automotive engines. This research was conducted in cooperation with the Public Health Service. The smog in the Los Angeles area is attributed to the effect of radiant energy on the mixture of hydrocarbons and nitrogen oxides found in the atmosphere there. A large portion of the hydrocarbons is believed to originate in the exhaust gases of automobiles. To prevent the escape of these hydrocarbons into the atmosphere catalytic mufflers have been proposed. In principle, these are simple and nonmechanical, consisting of a vessel charged with a catalyst capable of destroying the exhaust hydrocarbons by catalyzing their oxidation. However, these catalysts are severely affected by the particulate matter, mainly in the form of lead sulfate (PbS04), lead oxysulfate (PbS04.Pb0), and Lead chlorobromide (Pb(Cl,Br)2), contained in the exhaust gas. Deposition of lead on the catalyst as PbS04, PbS04, PbS0, and Pb(Cl,Br)2 restricts catalytic activity. As a result,after 20,000 miles of operation the temperature necessary to achieve 50-percent conversion of isopentane in a mixture of 0.2 percent isopentane, 2 percent carbon monoxide and 4 percent oxygen, and the balance nitrogen at 10,000 hourly space velocity has risen from 400° C. to 500° C. even with a catalyst taken from the exit portion of the catalyst bed. The rest of the catalyst was more severely affected. Therefore, it would appear that operation for 20,000 miles is near the limit for a catalyst.

Several aspects of mine safety grounding systems and equipment are studied. Electrolytic corrosion of test ground beds has shown a high incidence of stray current damage, while efforts to build a reliable continuous ground bed monitor continue. Laboratory and field investigations of trailing cable splices have yielded strong evidence that splices can contribute to stray current problems in the mines, but a method is suggested for discovering deteriorating splices before they pose a serious hazard. A prototype device has been constructed to evaluate the electrical resistance of rail bonds underground as a source of stray current. Theoretical modeling of ground electrodes, has advanced considerably, now covering measurements of large cylindrical electrodes, multiple-rod ground beds, rod electrodes in stratified earth, and measurement of connected beds. A prototype instrument design is given for a potential gradient plotter to quickly evaluate voltage gradients near earth electrodes. Additional ground-check monitor testing is reported.

The Bureau of Mines developed a flue gas desulfurization process as part of its goal of minimizing the undesirable environmental impacts associated with energy and mineral-processing plants. The modified citrate process involves absorption of sulfur dioxide (S02) in a buffered citric acid solution. The S02-loaded solution is regenerated by countercurrent contact with steam in a packed tower. The wet S02 product is then dried and can be liquefied or further processed to make sulfuric acid. Test data from process investigation unit studies are presented. Material balances, flowsheets, and cost estimates are given for recovering S02 from copper smelter reverberatory gas, lead smelter sintering machine tail gas, and power-plant stack gas. Operating cost estimates show the process will add $0.04 per pound of copper, $0.01 per pound of lead, and $0.015 per kwhr to the cost of the respective operations. These costs could be substantially reduced if a source of waste heat was avail-able to provide the process steam requirements.

Transportation charges for mineral commodity movements in western Oregon and western Washington were determined mainly by a stratified random sample canvass of producers. Total 1965 mineral production value for this area was $53.3 million; the cost or charge to move this production from the mine to the consumer or to the point of consumption was determined to be an additional $38.7 million. Thirty seven companies were contacted as a sample out of a total population of 349; the statistically expanded sample production value deviated 3.6 percent from that obtained by the Bureau's annual canvass. The agreement between the sample results and the canvass totals demonstrated the effectiveness of the sampling method for obtaining data with a predesigned level of accuracy. For comparison, the north-central Idaho and western Montana area was studied, A random sample experiment was designed, but because of the dominance of a few major companies, a random sample technique would have required more visits to producers than if only the larger firms were contacted. Eighty-four percent of the 1966 mineral value ($198.6 million) was accounted for by interviewing 27 firms out of a total population of 199. Total transportation costs or charges for the area were $26.7 million. The significant difference observed between the relationship of minerals production value and transport charges between the two areas investigated can be attributed to the difference in the minerals produced. The western Oregon and western Washington region is a nonmetals-producing area as opposed to the predominance of metals production in the Idaho-Montana region.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines is conducting an ongoing research project to better understand the phenomena involved within electric arcs utilized in electric furnace steelmaking. With a better understanding of the physical and electrical characteristics involved, dynamic or predictive control of electric arc furnaces may be possible. A mathematical model is presented, but not solved, and the system of coupled equations is analyzed. Characteristic parameters are used to determine relative importance. In this manner, significant quantities are dermed. The parameters found to contribute little to the system of equations of motion are ignored. A resultant simplified system is identified, and directions for further study are indicated toward control of electric arc furnaces.

From time to time the Bureau of Mines has interpreted and applied certain provisions of the Federal Coal Mine Safety Act and Federal Mine Safety Codes, primarily for the guidance of Federal Coal Mine Inspectors. Although interpretations of the Act have appeared in the Federal Register, the Code interpretations and practical applications have not been published. In response to many requests from representatives of the coal-mining industry, the Bureau is publishing this information to promote better understanding of those provisions that may be misinterpreted or misapplied. INTERPRETATIONS AND APPLICATIONS Two Federal Mine Safety Codes are discussed in this report, namely the Federal Mine Safety Code for Bituminous-Coal and Lignite Mines of the United States, Part 1, and the Federal Mine Safety Code, Anthracite Mines of the United States, Part 1. In this circular the word Codes refers to both directives; Code* refers to the code for bituminous-coal and lignite mines; Code? refers to the one for anthracite mines. Act* refers only to bituminous-coal and lignite mines.

The coal wants at the Westland Mine in southwestern Pennsylvania consist chiefly of elongated, sandstone-filled channels with slickensided basal contacts. Tentatively identified as washouts, these channels are about 1,000 feet long and 300 feet wide, are erratic in occurrence and trend, and are difficult to delineate from the customary core drilling pattern. Roof conditions are hazardous adjacent to the washout contact, but roof stability is generally unaffected greater than 30 feet away.

"Accidents at coal mines in the United States in September 1926 resulted in the loss of 170 lives, according to information furnished to the Bureau of Mines, Department of Commerce, by State mine inspectors. Of this number 125 occurred at bituminous mines and 45 in the anthracite field. As the bituminous output of coal for September was 48,976,000 tons, and the production of anthracite was 8,444,000 tons, the fatalities reported represented a death rate of 2.55 per million tons for bituminous mines and 5.33 for anthracite mines. The industry as a whole showed a fatality rate of 2.6 per million tons of coal produced in September 1925 the rate for bituminous coal mines was 3.29; the anthracite mines were idle in September last year due to a strike.During the first nine months of the present year 1,759 men have been killed by accidents at the coal mines throughout the United States, resulting in a death rate, per million tons of coal produced, of 3.76 as compared with 3.95 for the same period in 1925. Reports for bituminous mines alone showed a nine-month fatality rate of 3.53 which was about the same as the corresponding rate from January to September in 1925. The anthracite rate for the present year, however, shows a decrease of about 17 per cent; that is, the rate has declined from 6.36 to 5.28.Records covering the first nine months of 1926 show that 12 ""major"" disasters, that is, disasters in which five or more men were killed at one time, have resulted in the loss of 271 lives as against 10 disasters and 199 deaths in the corresponding months in 1925. The fatality rates for these disaster: alone were 0.579 and 0.465, respectively. One major explosion occurred at Tahona, Oklahoma, on September 3, 1926, in which 16 men lost their lives.An analysis of the principal causes of the 1,759 fatalities for the first nine months of the present year shows a reduction in the death rate as a whole and for falls of roof and coal and for explosives, but an increase in haulage, gas and dust explosions, and electricity. To develop a method for predicting the stability of a fuel during long-term storage from rapid aging tests at 200° F, the Bureau of Mines determined the stabilities of three gasoline base stocks and an alkylate blending stock in both sealed storage and aerated storage at 110° F for periods extending to 32 weeks. Stabilities of samples containing gasoline-additive compounds were compared by aging, using two methods--rapid aging in a bomb at 200° F for intervals up to 16 hours and storage at 110° F. The additives used were an uninhibited tetraethyllead motor mix, N,N'-di-sec-buty1-p-phenylenediamine and 2,6-di-tert-butyl-4-methylpheno1. Results were related by graphs that enable predictions of gum and sediment formation during storage from data obtained in bomb tests. A premium-gasoline base stock and the alkylate proved to be stable, but the two regular-grade gasoline base stocks were found to be unstable. Addition of the diamine antioxidant improved the stability of both of the regular gasoline base stocks, while the phenol antioxidant improved only one of them. The presence of the tetraethyllead decreased the storage stability of all four fuels, both with respect to formation of gum and precipitation of inorganic sediment. The rapid test at 200° F appears to offer promise as a basis for a method of predicting gasoline stability in long-term 110° F storage.

This Bureau of Mines report contains information on 63 water flood projects in Colorado. Water was injected in 10 formations located in 58 oilfields. Specific field data presented include location, discovery, development, water supply, fluid injection, oil and water production, oil reserves, and oil recoveries by primary and secondary methods. An estimated 3.5 billion barrels of water has been injected to recover approximately 533 million barrels of oil, a ratio of 6.57 to 1. Most of the injection water is from alluvial deposits, although produced water is used in many fields. Injection water treatment is not a major problem. Appraisal of project success or failure in this report is based on technical, rather than economic, information.

An improved mathematical model with the attendant computer program to calculate multiphase fluid flow in petroleum reservoirs is presented. The model is used to simulate the behavior when a fluid is used to displace hydro-carbon fluids in a reservoir. The method is an expansion of a previously published method, in Bureau of Mines RI 7011, but handles constant injection rate as an alternative to constant pressure. Program documentation is provided along with thorough explanations of the added program features. Using the program, the petroleum engineer can calculate oil recoveries for different flood patterns and operating conditions and select the conditions most likely to optimize recovery. Experience with the previous model demonstrated the need for the improvements in order to simulate reservoir behavior more accurately. The improved method will result in improved oil recovery. In this paper, the significant improvements are described in detail so that anyone interested can put the program to use.
