This bulletin presents a summary of available information regarding the sources of uranium, radium, and vanadium, the methods used in treating the ores, and the uses of the finished products. In particular the paper describes the ores found in the United States, giving especial attention to those characteristics of the ores and the conditions of their occurrence that affect mining and treatment. ACKNOWLEDGMENTS. In the preparation of this bulletin a number of persons rendered assistance by furnishing information and by making it possible for us to visit the carnotite deposits in western Colorado and eastern Utah at a time of the year when without this assistance it would have been difficult to obtain satisfactory results. A review of technical literature of the last quarter century discloses that much experimental work has been carried on in an effort to develop commercial processes for making sponge iron. In addition to the work that has been recorded, other work has been done the results of which have not been published. The degree of success or failure of these investigators does not detract from the fact that the problem has its challenging aspects and practical possibilities that encourage further investigation. The purpose of this report is to record information derived from recent experimental work that .had its 'objective the development and demonstration of one method of producing sponge iron. Work of other investigators was studied and applied wherever possible.

The purpose of this study was to develop methods for the financial evaluation of mineral deposits. This includes the selection of the best alternative mining and processing methods and production rates. This was done by performing a financial evaluation through computer simulation using sensitivity and probabilistic risk analysis. The criterion used to measure the relative advantages of these investment and operating alternatives is the discounted-cash-flow rate of return. Included is a description of the theory and methods used in the probabilistic analysis approach, which is based on the premise that the expression of a range of values in establishing an estimate for a parameter is more realistic than the choice of a single value. Numerous simulations are made using randomly selected values of the input parameters resulting in a frequency distribution of the rates of return and their relative probability of occurrence. The sensitivity analysis method is described and combined with the probabilistic analysis to interrelate mineral reserves, capital investments, operating costs, and production rates. The ability to vary these input parameters on successive runs has permitted the selection of the best alternative mining and processing methods and production rates for a given mineral deposit. For illustrative purposes the evaluation of a mineral deposit was performed using three alternative mining and processing methods at three different quantities of resources and various production rates and prices. The computer program used in this analysis was written in FORTRAN II for maximum compatability and should run without modification on most computers having BK (8,000-word) core memory, a card reader, and printer (120 characters per line).

"INTRODUCTION Sulfur is a most damaging impurity in many of our American coals. From the older coal industry of Europe and Britain we can apparently learn but little about the problem of preparing and using high-sulfur coal. Although washing has long been established there for controlling ash content, sulfur is referred to rarely, as the important deposits are singularly low in sulfur.On the other hand, widely distributed coal deposits of America differ tremendously in sulfur content. Many of the more extensive beds contain too much sulfur for metallurgical use, and almost everywhere except in the Rocky Mountain and Pacific coast regions sulfur control is at least a potential problem. American coal-preparation engineers are confronted not only with great variations in the total quantity of sulfur in coal but with an intricately varying pattern of the physical and chemical forms in which the sulfur occurs. It must be conceded that the baffling problem of sulfur reduction in coal is as yet substantially unsolved, for there are but few isolated instances in which we have been able to prepare a satisfactory metallurgical fuel from coals containing as much as 2.0 percent sulfur in the raw state.It has been assumed generally that organic sulfur, being chemically combined with carbonaceous matter, is distributed throughout the coal matter and that it remains unchanged in the clean-coal part of the product during washing.Sulfur that may be washed out of the coal is that part that is combined with the iron in pyrite lenticles associated with the coal. In most of our coals it has been found that, besides the visible bands, lenses, and flakes of pyrite, extremely small and even microscopic particles of pyrite 4/ are distributed through the coal matter. Only the free, relatively coarse pyrite particles .are removed by conventional coal-washing devices, and usually most of the sulfur is still left in the product."

The contractor examined L.T. White's Patent No. 3524680 and, finding it in need of engineering refinements, proceeded with a conceptual design of a variable wall mining machine. The contractor then proceeded to assess the feasibility of the variable wall mining machine measured against the criteria specified by the U.S. Bureau of Mines. The feasibility was judged from a physical aspect, a health and safety aspect, and an economic aspect. The Variable Wall Mining Machine was judged to be feasible on all three aspects provided that certain specified practices were adopted. Description The specifications and design and performance parameters of the Variable Wall Mining System as conceptualized are summarized in Tables I and II. The system consists of a side-cutting auger operating in a string of identical 12 ft. sections, along a 500 ft. retreating longwall face. In addition to the 41 identical sections, there is a special drive and discharge section at the head gate.

The U.S. Bureau of Reclamation requested U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) assistance in developing design data for moving lead-zinc-gold tailings from their current location without disrupting the existing chemically stable conditions. This report presents results of USBM work in determining (1) the minimum required time to air dry the tailings to approximately 20 pet moisture under various drying conditions both in the laboratory and in the field, (2) the degree of oxidation or reduction that occurs during drying, (3) the effect of lime or cement addition before drying, and (4) the likely equilibrium conditions of the dried tailings after deposition at the new location. The limited number of tests performed by the USBM in the available time frame established trends in oxidation levels but did not provide absolute statistical validity of data values. All data from drying and oxidation testing are included in appendices to this report.

This report covers the magnetic surveying done in the Plattsburg area , which was part of a general survey, of magnetite deposits in New York State . Other areas being surveyed are the Star Lake district , St. Lawrence County ; Brewster district , Putnam County; and the Sterling district , Orange County. Reconnaissance indicated an area about 3 miles long and 1,200 feet wide , but detailed surveys have been completed on only a portion of that area . In several districts , surveys of this type have served as a basis in the selection of areas for exploration by diamond drilling by the Bureau of Mines .

"Introduction.The Bureau of Mines at its Northwest Experiment station has been studying the production of sponge iron for the past four years, and during 1923 progress advanced to the point industrial applications can be safely considered. A furnace was operated commercially at silver City, Utah, producing about three tons of sponge iron daily.The Bureau was led to undertake this work by the interest in the use of sponge iron for copper precipitation and for conversion to iron and steel in the electric furnace.If a piece of iron oxide is completely reduced at such a low temperature (850 to 900° C) that no sintering or fusion takes place, then the piece of metallic iron formed has the same size and shape as the original piece of oxide on account of the removal of oxygen, the structure is finely porous, exposing a large surface of iron, and the apparent density is less than that of the original piece of iron oxide. This material is called ""sponge iron"". Chemically, it is a very reactive material."

Surface mining activities disturb large tracts of land resulting in the potential for greatly increased downstream sediment loads. The Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act of 1977 places increased emphasis on the protection of the environment from the adverse effects of surface mining operations. Surface mining activities must be planned to minimize disturbance to the hydrologic balance, erosion and sediment contributions to receiving streams. Sediment ponds must provide a sediment storage volume equal to the accumulated sediment volume from the drainage area as determined by the Universal Soil Loss Equation (USLE) or other empirical methods established by the regulatory authority. It has thus become extremely important for the mining industry to secure more accurate estimates of potential erosion losses and sediment yield. Accurate estimates of sediment yield are required for the planning, design and successful operation of sediment control systems such as detention ponds and other alternative control structures and for evaluating the effectiveness of land management practices. The principal soil loss prediction procedure available for use is the LISLE. The USLE procedure is inadequate for use in predicting soil loss from surface mine regions for a number of reasons. These include: 1. The USLE was developed to estimate average average annual loss from agricultural soils. It cannot predict accurately soil loss for specific storm events. In surface mine regions a major portion of the soil loss occurs during the initial six months to one year of active mining. Accurate estimates of soil loss over short periods are thus required for the design of control structures. 2. The diffusion of such knowledge in the field of sampling metallic metallurgical materials appears to have been quite insufficient, and it is felt that when the principles involved are once thoroughly comprehended their universal application will be appreciated, so that it will make no difference whether pig iron or gold bullion is offered for test. It may further be noted that a discussion of the theories underlying practical methods is placed under the caption "Practical Sampling," with the idea that no one can be a practical sampler unless he is capable of analyzing his methods. No attempt has been made to advocate anyone method, but it is hoped that the analyses of all of the methods in use will show where each may be correctly and safely applied. The fact that it is possible to demonstrate the theoretical correctness of several methods indicates the invalidity of the claim that any single one of them is the standard.

A survey of previous underground mine fires revealed a number of reported fires may have been caused by malfunctioning stationary electrical equipment. Therefore, an evaluation of conventional fire protection systems was conducted to determine their usefulness in the protection of this equipment. To simplify the problem and facilitate the handling of data, the under-ground mine was divided into nine work areas. Representative combustibles and associated hazards characteristic of each area were identified. Conventionally available fire protection systems were then examined and evaluated to determine engineering and cost feasibility, effectiveness and reliability for the development of fire protection guidelines which could be used within the nine areas of interest.

Views and conceptions of the origin, composition, and general nature of coal differ so widely that to determine the real extent of actual knowledge is no easy matter. The chemist finds difficulty in attacking the chemical problems and the engineer lacks a broad chemical basis for the study of his problems. Thus the economical and efficient utilization of coal in the industries suffers from a lack of knowledge of the composition of coal itself. Most scientists interested in this matter, as has been brought out in discussions during the recent investigation of coal problems, appear to have only a vague idea of the components of coal and their origin. Some are even in doubt as to whether substances derived from the wood and resins of plants form a part of coal; and few seem to have more than the dimmest idea of what are the components of coal, the condition in which these now exist, and the transformations that they haye undergone. Although during the paiilt century or more many co.rrect observations have been made and recorded, these were falsely or inadequately interpreted, so that many of the interpretations rendered are contradictory. As a result there has been great confusion. Many of the observations made in the past, although accurate and correct, could not be explained, because the principles involved in a correct solution of the problem were not then known. For example, Parkinson, Hutton, Petzhold, Guembel, and others made valuable discoveries regarding the processes by which plant substances are transformed into coal, but as the principles involved are those of colloidal chemistry, a science not known to the scientific world of that time, the observed facts could not be interpreted and the solution of the whole problem was blocked. The explanation of the true meaning of the alternating bright and dull bands so familiar in all ordinary bituminous coals afforCls another example. This banding has been observed and recorded from the earliest times, and has led to the forming of many false theories. Some gAologists, for example, have endeavored to explain the bands as due to alternating climatic conditions during the coal-forming period. Had the geologists known the true nature of coal they could not have made this mistake nor many others made in the past. To fill in a few of these gaps and to clarify some of the existing confusion is the aim of this paper. The immediate cause that led the author to investigate further the composition of coal and the origin and structure of its constituents was that when an attempt was made to discover the meaning of the coking and noncoking properties of coal a more exact knowledge of the nature of coal was required than was then available.

In 1962 and 1963, two in situ combustion pilot tests were conducted in the shallow Second Venango sand near Reno, Pa. Because of poor oxygen utilization and lack of production response, both tests were considered failures and were terminated. The area was then relatively inactive until late 1966, when a development well drilled near the 1963 test site had surprisingly good production in what was considered to be a pressure-depleted reservoir. Other wells drilled in and around the old thermal pilot areas also came in as good oil producers. This report presents a study of the increased oil production from the Second Venango sand in the Reno area, and the apparent connection of the present production response and the old thermal pilot tests. Apparently combustion occurred in the Second Venango sand after the 1962 and 1963 experiments were terminated and, supported by large volumes of air left in the reservoir after the 1963 test, generated carbon dioxide which helped repressure the formation. This field evidence of combustion warrants another pilot experiment to further explore the use of properly designed in situ combustion techniques in increasing production from the Second Venango sand.

Bauxite was discovered in the Springvale district in 1916. About 16, 000 tons was mined in the period 1916 to 1922, but no bauxite mining has been done since that time. The Bureau of Mines explored for bauxite in the district from September 5 to November 18, 1943. During the life of the project, the Bureau of Mines obtained mineral exploration agreements covering a total of 11,330 acres from 50 property owners. A total of 388 holes were drilled on five of these properties and 164 samples were taken and analyzed. The Springvale bauxite district includes an area of about 30 square miles in the northwestern part of Randolph County, Ga. The village of Springvale is in the west central part of the district, and Cuthbert is 8 miles southeast of it (fig. 1).

"INTRODUCTION Compressed air for operating coal-mining equipment is seldom considered in conjunction with modern methods and appliances. But the Jamison Coal & Coke Co. has proved the economy and efficacy of compressed air for this purpose at its Mine 8 near Farmington, 8 miles west of Fairmont, Marion County, W.. Va., and the mining industry as a whole concedes its superior safety in gassy or dusty coal mines.The uses for compressed air in coal mining are now generally associated with such equipment as coal punchers, chain-breast machines, and to a lesser extent the ""radialaxe"" type of mining machines.Electricity has rapidly superseded compressed air for power in coal mines during the past 20 years; and in the last few years the general, and often unwise, use of electricity at the face region has taken on added impetus through the widespread use of mechanical loading equipment.Some of the unfavorable results of this increased use of electricity are shown in the growing number of mine explosions and fires of electrical origin. In the past four years 59 explosions of this type took the lives of 672 men, or 74.8 per cent of the total number of deaths from explosions were due to explosions of electrical origin.3In 1926, an explosion in Mine 8 of the Jamison Co. killed 19 men. The exact source of ignition was not determined, although it was definitely decided that it was of electrical origin and probably was at an electric coal-cutting machine.Prior to this disaster the company had done some experimenting with compressed-air-driven mining machines, and its Mine 9 had been completely equipped with air-driven chain-breast machines; a few of these machines were also in use in Mine 8. The explosion, however, gave impetus to the adoption by this company of compressed air for operating face equipment. The chain-breast machines were as satisfactory as electric machines of the same type; but the trend in the industry was toward faster cutting machines, which required less physical exertion on the part of the operating crews. A track-mounted machine of the arcwall type was found to be suitable for the conditions and system of mining, so that one of these operated by compressed air was developed by the Jeffrey Manufacturing Co. working with the officials of the Jamison Co.The first of these machines was installed in the latter part of 1926 and additional machines were delivered from time to time, until at present there are nine of them in the mine. Necessary improvements have been made, with the result that a fast-cutting, easily handled, efficient, and safe mining machine has been developed for cutting the hard Pitts¬burgh bed coal of the Fairmont field."

6784. Barnes, V. L., and Romberg, Frederick. Gravity and Magnetic Observations on Iron Mountain Magnetite Deposit, Llano County, Tex. Geophysics, Menasha, Wis., vol. 8, No. 1, 1943, pp. 32-45. An outcrop of magnetite in the Central Mineral region of Texas is explored experimentally with a dip needle and a gravity meter. Two anomalies are observed, one due to the outcropping body and one probably due to a previously unknown body close to the outcrop. The possible attitudes of the bodies are discussed, and their masses and probable dimensions are computed from the gravitational observations. - Author's abstract.

In the temperature range from 867 to 1,209 K, potential measurements were obtained for the cellPt, MoS2 , Mo02 , SO2 = 1 atm // Zr02 // 02 = 0.0112 atm, Pt, with the overall cell reactionMoS2(c) + 3 02(g, 0.0112 atm) = Mo02 (c) + 2 S02(g). In an earlier paper Dean and Hersberger5/ gave preliminary results a d discussed briefly the use in flotation of organic reagents of the type known in the textile industry as "wetting agents.? These reagents are those with a molecular structure comprising a long hydrocarbon chain attached to a. highly molar or hydrophile group in such manner that ionization is nearly complete in dilute solution and the resultant ionic grouping has a very considerable hydrophile-lipophile unbalance in the structure. As a result of this characteristic structure these reagents are more or less powerful frothers and emulsifiers. Ten the degree of bydrophile-lipaphile unbalance is sufficiently great and specific chemical factors are absent these compounds behave in flotation as noncollecting frothers insensitive to reasonable changes of pH.

Since 1941 the Federal Bureau of Mines has been conducting an intermit-tent program of placer and lode investigations to evaluate the potential tin resources of the western Seward Peninsula tin belt. Previous investigations were made in the Potato, Cape, Brooks (Lost River), and Ear Mountain areas. As part of this program the Bureau made a reconnaissance of reportedly tin-bearing stream gravels in areas adjacent to the previously worked tin deposits at Lost River and Potato Mountain. The objective of the reconnaissance was to determine if additional areas might be favorable for lode or placer exploration. The work was begun late in the fall of 1956 and completed during the following summer. The streams sampled were the Lost River and York Creek in the Brooks Mountain area and the Anikovik River and Kigezruk and Baituk Creeks in the York area. Samples were obtained by churn-drilling methods employing conventional placer-evaluation procedures. Holes were drilled at wide intervals at sites chosen as being representative of drainage areas rather than of individual gravel deposits. Minor to trace amounts of tin were found in the gravels of all these streams, but the highest grade was 0.35 pound of tin per cubic yard in the gravels of Lost River below the mouth of Tin Creek. Small amounts of gold were found on Baituk Creek and in one hole on the Anikovik River; the highest grade did not exceed 10 cents per cubic yard. Traces of scheelite and barite were found on York Creek, chromite was encountered in one hole on the Anikovik River, and minor amounts of titanium minerals (probably derived from basaltic intrusives) were found in the York area.
