Open-cut mining of copper ores in the western United States is a relatively new industry. At first the mining methods were mainly adapted from those used at open-cut iron mines and at quarries, but now efficient practices that are more suitable for the copper deposits have been developed. The pioneer in this field is the Utah Copper Co., of Bingham, Utah, which deserves great credit for working out much of the early procedure. Stripping began at that mine in 1906, and the large Garfield concentrator was put in commission in 1908. Next in order of development were the Nevada Consolidated Copper Co., at Ely, Nev. ; the Chino mine of the Ray Consolidated Copper Co., at Santa Rita, N. Mex. ; the New Cornelia Copper Co., at Ajo, Ariz. ; the Sacramento Hill mine of the Copper Queen Branch, Phelps Dodge Corporation, at Bisbee, Ariz.; and the open cut of the United Verde Copper Co., at Jerome, Ariz. The Sacramento Hill mine began to produce in 1923, and the United Verde open-cut mine has produced ore mainly in connection with stripping. The writer visited the Utah Copper mine in September, 1923; the Nevada Consolidated in August, 1923; the Chino in July, 1924; and the New Cornelia, the Sacramento Hill, and the United Verde open cut at various times during 1922, 1923, 1924, and 1925, mostly in connection with other work.

Late in 1974 at a meeting with the Cedar Coal Company in Chelyan, West Virginia, a very definite requirement for an automatic heat sensing fire suppression system for the type coal augers used in their mine was revealed. Several fires had been experienced, and while equipment loss was a consideration, operator safety was also a concern. As of that date no one had developed an automatic system specifically for fire suppression on coal augers. II. EQUIPMENT DEVELOPMENT As a result of the above meeting, an unsolicited proposal was made to the Bureau on March 1, 1975, and a contract was issued to provide the following services: A. Determine and define fire hazard problem on Compton Coal Auger. B. Modify or otherwise mike a Lease "AFEX" system suitable for protecting the fire hazard area developed in paragraph "A". C. Make installation of "AFEX" system. D. Monitor installation for reliability for a period of 90 days after installation. C. ConJurt a simulated fire test to determine effectiveness on system.

The assembly procedures for nine different wire rope terminations used in the mining industry are presented in a format and manner to facilitate training and to provide points where inspection of the termination should be performed. The nine terminations addressed are: Flemish Loop with Steel Sleeve & Thimble, Flemish Loop with Steel Sleeve, Wedge Socket, Swaged Socket, Turn Back Loop with Sleeve & Thimble, Thimble Splice with Four Tucks, U-Bolt Clip & Thimble, Zinc Poured Socket, and Epoxy Resin Poured Socket. The manual was prepared to be used primarily for field type mining operations or training where high capacity machinery is quite limited. It is nut the intent of this manual to suggest that the procedures presented are those to be used by manufacturers or other commercial enterprizes. A different set of procedures may be more appropriate where ideal space and equipment resources are available. The assembly procedures were derived from standard industrial practice, manufacturer's recommendations, and the open literature on the subject. These same procedures were used to prapare test specimens for an extensive series of pull and axial fatigue tests. The results of these tests indicate that these procedures are satisfactory in all respects. This manual is to be used as part of a complete training program. Although a brief glossary is included, there has been no attempt to make this a primer on wire rope. The selection of wire rope termination hardware, like the selection of the wire rope, is a subject not covered by this manual. The reader is cautioned that there are various sources for such hardware and this selection must be done carefully.

"INTRODUCTION The provision of escapeways from coal mines is a moral and, in most States, a legal obligation of mine owners and operators. The obligation is not always fulfilled because of the hope that no occasion will ever arise requiring the use of such facilities, and, as time passes without the need for using them, a false sense of security is born in the belief that ""it can't happen here.""The disastrous fire in a mine in Ohio on July 5, 1944, again focused attention on the importance of escapeways in averting disasters and made it clear that one or more dependable exits must be provided from a mine and parts thereof where men might be trapped by being cut off from the regular travel route. This matter of always-having available travelable exits has been advocated for many years by the United States Bureau of Mines."

The Federal Bureau of Mines examined ilmenite-bearing sands in southern Texas as part of a program to discover sources of supply for the domestic titanium industry. Deposits were examined from May 1956 through January 1959 in the outcrops of sandstone beds in the Jackson group of Eocene formations in Lee, Burleson, Fayette, and Starr Counties on the Gulf Coastal Plain; in alluvial valley fill in Brewster County in southwest Texas; in the sand beaches of Matagorda Peninsula and the Galveston, Padre, and Brazos Islands--part of the offshore chain of barrier islands along the Texas coast; and in unconsolidated sediments in Willacy County on the Rio Grande delta in the southeast Texas.

A major focus of ground control research presently being conducted by the Spokane Research Laboratory of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) is to incorporate data on weak rock masses into existing design relationships, with an emphasis on updating the span design curve for manned entries and the overbreak curve for longhole entries. Both curves were originally developed at the University of British Columbia, Vancouver, BC. The original database has been augmented by information from mines throughout the United States, Canada, Australia, and Europe. The common factor in all these mines is the presence of a weak back and/or walls. In most cases, the ore zone is the weakest rock unit and must be stabilized so that the mineral-bearing rock can be extracted safety. The current NIOSH research attempts to provide rock mechanics tools to assist a mine operator in making economic decisions that will also ensure a safe working environment. This paper documents the Nevada database with a special emphasis on Nevada underground gold mines.

"The electrolytic manganese process4/ developed by the Bureau of Mines involves the electrolysis of a solution of manganese sulfate and ammonium sulfate in a diaphragm-type cell. Metallic manganese is deposited on the cathodes, and sulfuric acid is produced at the anodes. The spent electrolyte contains, in addition to the sulfuric acid, approximately 40 percent of the manganese sulfate and most of the ammonium sulfate originally present in the feed solution. This spent solution is used to leach fresh ore that has previously been subjected to a reducing roast. The resulting leach liquor is purified and returned to the cell.Manganese of very high purity is produced by the electrolytic process. The properties of this metal are so different from those of the best grade of manganese that can be made by any other commercially feasible process that it is virtually a new material. Electrolytic manganese has been used in the preparation of new high-manganese alloys with valuable properties.3/ and further developments are to be expected. The electrolytic manganese process not only results in a product of superior qualities, but is applicable to large tonnages of domestic ores that are unsuitable for direct use in producing ferromanganese.The future industrial use of electrolytic manganese is of course, related to its cost. Decreases in the cost of production will lead to wider use of the metal; conversely, increases in the volume of production made possible by greater demand will bring further .decreases in cost."

A practical method for removing the phosphorus would be valuable to the iron and steel industry. Gravity concentration has been of little value as far as the removal it of phosphorous is concerned, because the compounds of this element are, as a rule, disseminated very finely. Removal of the phosphorous by leaching is not a new idea and has been the subject of some investigation,3,4/ but few data have been published. W. R. Crane published analyses of various ore bodies in the Birmingham district. The hard or unleached ores are much higher or in phosphorus than the soft, leached ores along the outcrops. Occupational exposure to hand transmitted vibration (HTV) arises from the hand held powered tools extensively used in the mining and construction industry such as rock drills, chipping hammers, chain saws etc. Regular exposure to HTV is the major cause of a range of permanent injuries to human hands and arms which are commonly referred to as hand-arm vibration syndrome (HAVS). In addition to this, the percussive tools generate overall sound power levels in excess of 110dBA in most cases. Such a high sound power level greatly exceeds the maximum permissible exposure limit (PEL) of organizations such as National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA). Long term occupational exposure to this noise has been diagnosed as the main reason for permanent hearing loss in the operators. It is therefore important to develop an understanding of the mechanisms which lead to these high vibration and sound levels and in order to do this a detailed computational model of a pneumatic chipping hammer has been made. This paper presents a nonlinear computational model of a pneumatic chipping hammer. In order to better understand the dynamics of the chipping hammer, the hammer was subdivided into components that are shown in figure 1 (a) (based on a chipping hammer manufactured by Atlas-Copco). The hammer mainly consisted of a center body, a moving piston and a chisel. Compressed air is used to drive the piston inside of a cylinder and on the downward stroke this piston impacts the chisel to create the hammer effect. The machine has one pneumatic valve and this valve regulates the air supply either to the upper chamber or to the lower chamber. The valve changes according to the relative pressures in the two chambers and the supply pressure. There are also twelve different exhaust ports at two positions along the cylinder labeled upper ports and lower ports. As the piston moves the ports can be closed or open (allowing exhaust). Fundamentally, the computational model was made up of two different sub-models, a fluid model and a structural dynamic model as shown in Figure 3 (a) and (b) respectively. The first sub-model takes into consideration the fluid dynamics of the machine since the hammer is driven by compressed air. Equations for the mass flow rate though bleed orifices (assuming an isentropic process) 1 is used to determine the mass flow into and out of the upper and lower chambers. This Information Circular , one of a series published by the Bureau of Mines , reports on the methods and costs of mining and concentrating zinclead ore at the Highland Surprise mine in the Pine Creek area of the Coeur d'Alene region of Idaho . The mine is owned and operated by the Highland Surprise Consolidated Mining Co. , which supervises operations of the Nevada Stewart group of claims , which is adjacent on the northwest . These properties are at the extreme eastern end of a zone of fracturing that strikes northwest across the Pine Creek area . In fractures along this zone are the principal Pine Creek mines ; these are the Highland Surprise , Nevada Stewart , Sidney , Denver , V and Idaho , Liberal King , and Northern Light . Country rock at the Highland Surprise is argillite of the Prichard formation (Belt series ) . Fracturing has permitted the movement of mineral- izing agents that have replaced adjacent walls and crushed country rock with sulfides . Ore minerals are sphalerite and galena with accessory pyrite , chalcopyrite , pyrrhotite , and siderite . Three principal ore shoots were found on the Highland Surprise property . The Highland ore shoot was mined from outcrop to the 400 level . The Surprise ore body has been developed to a depth of 1,400 feet on the dip of the vein . The outcrop of the Surprise ore shoot was 150 feet long and 2 to 4 feet thick ; on the 1,150 ( lowest ) level , the ore shoot is 320 feet long and 10 to 17 feet thick , with good zinc content . Surprise ore shoot No. 2 occurs 250 feet west of No. 1 and has been mined from the 500 to the 1,000 level . From 353,000 tons of ore mined between 1910 and 1948 , the property has a recorded production of 256,000 ounces of silver , 7,500 tons of lead , 24,000 tons of zinc , and 412 tons of copper . Both shrinkage and cut and fill stoping methods are used at the Highland Surprise , but shrinkage is unsuitable for mining below the 700 level , because faulting has weakened the walls . Development of the Surprise ore , as well as exploration laterally and along the strike , is prosecuted steadily . A prospect heading is being pushed westward toward Nevada Stewart ground from the 700 level . The mill has a rated capacity of 275 tons per day and operates near capacity . Selective flotation makes zinc concentrate that is shipped to the Anaconda smelter and lead concentrate that is trucked to the Bunker Hill smelter at Kellogg .

A series of seven underground-coal-mine fire experiments was conducted in the Safety Re-search Coal Mine at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, Pittsburgh Research Laboratory. Coal and styrene-butadiene-rubber conveyor belting were burned upwind of two sensor stations, 18 m and 148 m from the fire source. Exhaust from a diesel locomotive flowed over the fire sources in six of the tests. Metal-oxide-semiconductor (MOS), CO, and optical-path-smoke sensors were positioned at both stations and found to be an optimum set of sensors for the fire discriminations. A representative set of 7,679 samples of CO data and data from the smoke and diesel-exhaust MOS sensors were used as inputs to train a neural network (NN). By testing 42,538 data samples from the seven experiments, all fires were detected by the NN within 9.67 min from the onset of significant changes in the MOS voltages without any false alarms.

The properties of coal from the Pittsburgh seam, procured from the Bruceton and Federal No. 2 Mines were found to be similar. Strength and stiffness properties of Beehive Mine coal were determined and the material found to be isotropic. Mechanical, index and geologic properties of roof and floor coal measure rocks from Beehive mines were measured and correlated. Analytic formulations are given for coal creep under uniaxial loading, while triaxial creep is being investigated. Results of testing of coal model structures are compared with predictions from using several material models.

The rapid growth of the organic chemical industry in the United States and abroad has focused attention on the future raw-material sources for this important industry. Chemical products are essential to modern civilization; and millions of tons of organic chemicals are used annually, ranging from basic raw materials to finished chemical products such as drugs, cosmetics, and soaps. Hundreds of chemical products are made directly or indirectly from coal, but in this report "coal chemicals" will be limited to crude tar, crud light oil, and ammonia recovered in the high-temperature carbonization of bituminous coal and the important principal products obtained by processing these materials. Specifically these include benzene} toluene, xylene, naphthalene, creosote oil, tar acid oil, pitch, and ammonium sulfate. Therefore the term "coal chemicals", wherever used in this report, includes only these products and does not include the secondary or intermediate products such as styrene, synthetic phenol, aniline, phthalic anhydride, or finished products made from these, such as synthetic rubber, plastics, and dyes. The United States leads the world in production and consumption of coal chemicals. In the past five years nearly one-fourth of the total output of coal-tar crudes in the world was produced in the United States. Consumption of some of the more important products derived from these crudes such as benzene, toluene, xylene, and naphthalene, however, ranged from about one-third to one-half of the world total because of imports and production of benzene, toluene, and xylene from petroleum. The synthetic organic chemical industry of the United States was established during World War I on chemical raw materials obtained by the high-temperature carbonization of bituminous coal but this source of supply currently furnishes less than 40 percent. More than 60 percent of the chemical raw materials used to produce organic and inorganic chemical is supplied by the petroleum industry and production of petrochemicals is rising rapidly.

More than 80% of U.S. roof bolts are fully-grouted, but about 1500 roof falls are reported each year. Anchorage failure of a fully grouted bolt can occur when the roof is active near the top of the hole. This paper reports on an extensive series of short-encapsulation pull tests (in which the bolts are installed with only 1 ft of resin) that were conducted in the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) Mine Safety Research Laboratory and operating mines in WV and PA. The tests confirmed that poor anchorage can been countered under some weak rock conditions. Suggestions for improving anchorage are included.

The placing of much, sometimes practically all, of the burden of the expense of mine accidents on the shoulders of the mine operator by compensation laws, and the fact that the problem of protecting the life end limb of workers is now by public opinion largely if not wholly passed to each industry to solve (and present-day thought strongly supports the justice of both of these propositions), are forcing industrial organizations into accident-prevention. Work. This policy is being adopted not alone to protect the companies; in addition, executives alert to their opportunities and obligations are taking part in this work personally to protect themselves. The functions of industrial executives in accident-prevention work are becoming numerous and complex. Executives who are logical in their reasoning, quickly see that before a company can constantly ask or expect the workers to heed safety suggestions, the company and its officials must "put their house in order" by laying down a concrete, definite safety program. For mines this includes primarily adoption of a to a logical mining method, the installation of safe miming equipment and practice the netting forth in definite form (preferably do a printed pamphlet) of the company's minimum safety requirements, and the organization of its operating officials into an accident-prevention body. After the company has its own affairs so arranged that it can go to its workers with "clear, hands" in promoting a safety program, the real work begins; and this is especially applicable in mining.

On May 15, 1936, Congress authorized the Bureau of Mines to conduct certain studies, experiments, and investigations of subbituminous coal and lignite .4/ Appropriations were made in July 1937, and since that date an active investigation has been underway to complete the provisions of the act. Part of the investigation has included a comprehensive survey of the known properties of the lower-rank non-coking coals, and provisions were made to obtain more data on certain varieties. In line with this plan, a typically subbituminous coal was selected for an extended series o tests in the standard Bureau of Mines-American Gas Association unit,5/ at the Central Experiment Station. This particular noncaking coal was the first one of its rank that ha& been tested in the apparatus; for this reason the results are of particular interest because the testing apparatus was originally designed for use in studying the coke- and gas-making properties of coking coals. The test as described below has been developed by the Bureau of Mines since 1927 through a cooperative agreement with the American Gas Association.6/ Ninety to 180 pounds of coal is heated in a circular retort, 13 to 18 inches in diameter, at wall. temperatures ranging from 540°C. to 1,110°C. in 100°C. steps. All products axe collected and measured; their physical and chemical properties axe then carefully determined to ascertain the gas- and coke-making properties of the coal.

As natural gas is a waning resource in many places, increased interest has attached to the use of gas for the manufacture of carbon black. Because of a large number of requests for information on the subject, the Bureau of Mines has undertaken a detailed study of the carbon-black industry, covering the mechanical details of commercial methods, with the purpose of increasing the recovery of carbon black by such processes. A study has been undertaken of the economic factors governing the carbon-black industry, the uses and properties of carbon black, the dE)velopment of more Itccurate methods of testing carbon black, microscopic examination of different grades of black, physicochemical study of methods' of mQ.nufacture now in use, and research on new methods of manufacture. Part I of this paper covers the engineering and economic side of the industry; the other phases of the investigation which have been under the direction of G. St. J. Perrott, of the Pittsburgh station.of the United States Bureau of Mines, are discussed in Part II.

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has been conducting re-search to determine the influence of mining machine mounted water sprays on airflows and methane concentrations at the face when blowing ventilation systems are used. Tests were conducted in a full-scale ventilation gallery. Airflow speeds and directions were measured at several locations near the face with ultrasonic anemometers. Methane was released from the face and concentrations were measured in the entry at locations above the mining machine using fixed point methanometers. Changes in airflow speed, direction, and methane concentrations were correlated with water spray operations. The test results using different spray arrangements and water pressures showed that operation of the machine-mounted sprayers can improve face ventilation effectiveness by increasing the velocity of airflow moving toward and away from the face. The improved ventilation resulted in reduced methane levels near the face.
