The applicability of a rotating drum with an attached trommel as a flocculation dewatering device of Florida phosphatic claywastes was studied. Several experiments were conducted in order to determine the important fabrication and operating parameters. Results from the experiments indicated flint the dosage of polyethylene oxide required to form a satisfactory product cake could be reduced by using the rotary drum, which introduces less shear stress into the fluid than a constant stirred tank mixer. It was found that the length of the mixer was the most important parameter. Increased length increased the retention time the flocs stayed in the mixer without dewatering. Such increased time decreased the stability of the flocs. Through analysis of residence time distribution data it was found that the longer mixers approached plug flow characteristics. Other important parameters were trommel length and rotational speed. Mixers from 10 cm diameter to 35.6 cm diameter were tested with good results.

The 24th annual survey of the peat industry by the Bureau of Mines, United States Department of the Interior, revealed that 76 producers in 20 States reported commercial production of peat in 1957. In addition to the States that reported production in 1956, Colorado, Idaho, and Wisconsin produced peat in 1957 Forty-four producers reported humus production; 21, reed-sedge peat; and 22, moss peat production. This total exceeds the number of active plants but several producers recovered more than one type of peat. Fifty percent of the total production was reported as reed-sedge peat, 36 percent as humus, and 14 percent as moss peat. About one-sixth of the total production was raw peat, with no preparation other than being air-dried. The remainder consisted of processed peat prepared for use by cultivation, shredding, and/or kiln drying.

During the 20th century, the increased emphasis on worker health and safety and the advent of new mining equipment and methods led to many changes in mine face ventilation practices. Efforts by government and private industry to improve and modify ventilation practices resulted in better health and safety conditions for workers. This paper examines factors that had a significant influence on mine face ventilation design during the past century. Several “milestone” events are discussed along with the impact they had on worker health and safety. Significant ventilation research efforts by government and private industry are presented. This brief ventilation history highlights innovative ventilation designs and a consistent commitment to mining health and safety.

Electrical trailing cable used to power coal mining machinery is frequently damaged by tensile strain or crushing by mining machines running over the cable. A major problem is finding the exact location of a short or open in this cable so it may be repaired. FMC Corporation was awarded modification III to USBM Contract H0122011 to continue development and testing of cable fault locators, resulting in delivery of: 1. A prototype electrostatic/electromagnetic/ TDR transmitter and an electrostatic/electro-magnetic receiver sot that: o Locates cable faults by time domain reflectometry o Locates opens by detecting electrostatic signals o Locates shorts by electromagnetic coupling. 2. A prototype infrared detector and an infrared detector power supply that heats a shorted area by applying high current (at low voltage) and locating a short by infrared output. 3. Twelve production infrared detectors. 4. Detail drawings for all of the developed instruments.

Additional testing of two prototype instruments for the discrete detec­tion of submicrometer particles in metal and nonmetal underground mines is described. The detectors are designed to utilize properties of submicrometer particles to distinguish between those produced by fires from mine ambient particles primarily resulting from diesel engine exhaust. One instrument is based on the ability to pyrolyze fire produced parti­cles, but not diesel exhaust particles. An alarm is produced when the ratio of pyrolyzed to unpyrolyzed particles exceeds a preset value. The other detector utilizes a continuous flow ion chamber preceded by a denuder to remove charged particles. Discrimination against diesel produced submicrometer particles results because the diesel particles are naturally more highly charged than fire produced particles. In-mine testing was conducted over a period of several months. Both in­struments exhibited an ability to discriminate against diesel exhaust. However, problems with the recording equipment, and with the instruments themselves, due to large ambient dust particles, prevented enough data from being obtained to choose between the two methods. Recommendations to correct the problems are made.

"Statistics show3 that in 1927 the United States consumed 60 per cent of the world's production of chromite and produced none. The uses of chromium are rapidly expanding, and a dependable supply is essential to our industries. Since the political and commercial control of our supply of chromite is now in foreign hands it is prudent to determine how this nation can best prepare to supply its need for chromium if the imports were cut off or restricted and whether it is now possible and desirable to stimulate production of chromium from domestic deposits. We have only small amounts of chrome ore of high enough grade to meet present trade requirements. Therefore the Bureau of Mines is making a study of methods for beneficiating our low-grade ores.Chromite (Cr203.Fe0), is the only commercial source of chromium. For refractories, a minimum of 40 per cent Cr203 and a low silica content (5 to 8 per cent) is usually specified. In most instances bricks or lumps having a physical structure that will not crack when heated are required. The only way an inferior ore could be adapted to this use world be to concentrate it and develop a satisfactory binder to make bricks out of the concentrates.For making ferrochrome the requirements are a minimum of 45 per cent Cr203 and an iron content not exceeding one-third of the chromic oxide. On some low-grade ores gravity concentration will give a product meeting these requirements; other ores yield concentrates containing too much iron or other impurities to be saleable."

The thermodynamic data presented in the literature for zirconium compounds are incomplete. Among the compounds for which adequate data are Zacking are zirconium fluoride and sulfate. This paper reports experimental heat-content values determined by the Bureau of Mines for these two zirconium salts throughout the temperature range of 273° to 1,200° K. No crystalline transformations were found in the two compounds investigated, and neither of the compounds melted over the temperature range studied. MATERIALS TESTED The Oak Ridge National Laboratories, Oak Ridge, Tenn., supplied the two zirconium salts used in this investigation. The zirconium fluoride was high- purity reactor grade material. The zirconium sulfate contained between 0.01 and 0.10 percent hafnium and calcium, and other elements in concentrations below 0.01 percent, A spectrographic analysis of the two compounds is given in table 1. Before use the compounds were dried at 400° C. for several hours to removed adsorbed moisture.

"A preliminary examination of the Bi-Metallic molybdenum prospect was made in October 1944, as a result of which it was recommended that a trench exploration project be undertaken on the property. This report presents the information obtained from project work done during June 1945.In its program of exploration of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Lanes has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to the national security and. economy. It is the policy of the Bureau to publish the facts developed by each exploratory project as soon as practicable after its conclusion. The Mining Branch, Lowell B. Moon, chief, conducts preliminary examinations, performs the actual exploratory work, and prepares the final report. The Metallurgical Branch, R. G. Knickerbocker, chief, analyzes samples and performs beneficiation tests. Both these branches are under the supervision of Dr. R. S. Dean, assistant director.With respect to this report, special acknowledgment is due S. H. Lorain, chief, Albany Division, Mining Branch, for aid in preparing the report.The property is situated in the NW1/4, sec. 26, T. 39 N., R. 29 E. about 21 miles northeast of Tonasket. Tonasket (population 643), the nearest town, is a way point on a branch line of the Great Northern Railway. The prospect is reached by a good gravel road through Havillah to Vincent's ranch, about 3 miles northeast of Havillah. From the ranch, an abandoned dirt road extends to the portal of the Moly alit, about 1 mile distant. The mine road could be kept open without difficulty if properly graded and surfaced."

A summary of Bureau of Mines research on utilization and disposal of solid wastes is presented, accompanied by an extensive bibliography of related publications. The Bureau's Solid Waste and Materials Recycling Program is directed toward four main areas of research, development, and demonstration: (1) extraction of mineral, metal, and energy values from urban refuse; (2) upgrading and recycling of automotive and related ferrous and nonferrous scrap; (3) utilization and stabilization of mine, mill, and smelter wastes; and (4) recovery and reuse of values from industrial waste products. A contract and grant program that supplements the in-house research and aids in the training of manpower in management of mineral-, metal-, and energy -based solid wastes is also discussed. This publication is an updating of Bureau of Mines Information Circular 8460 issued March 1970.

Under the seventh 5-year plan (1986-90), the Chinese Government continued to implement reform and to open the country further to the outside world in order to accelerate the growth of its national economy. As a result of expanded foreign economic exchanges and domestic achievements in education, science and technology, and cultural and public health undertakings, the national economy was strengthened. In 1988, there was impressive growth in the Chinese economy. The gross national product (GNP) grew by 11.2070 reaching $373.4 billion; 2 the national income grew by 11.4070 to $310.9 billion. The major problem in the Chinese economy was the imbalance between high demand and insufficient supply. Chronic shortages resulted in price increases and high inflation, which averaged 19% for China as a whole and about 30% in urban areas. Macroeconomic stability took precedence over market-oriented reform initiative. Because of rapidly growing inflation, the Government re-imposed price controls and rationing in major cities in the fall of 1988. China continued to be a major world producer of minerals, metals, and fuels. Output of the principal commodities continued to rise. The largest in-crease in production was salt which rose 24% in output in 1988; followed by sulfuric acid, 14%; cement, 12%; soda ash, 9%; caustic soda, 7%; and steel, 6%. For fossil fuels, the increase in output of natural gas was 14% in 1988; followed by coal, 3%; and crude oil, 2%. The output of electricity by thermal-fired powerplants rose by 9% while that for hydroelectric power-plants rose 7%. Although China's overall energy output has increased annually since 1980, the growth in demand continued to outstrip the supply.

The influence of thermal treatments on the grindability of low-grade hematitic iron ores from Michigan and Minnesota was examined in bench-scale tests. Treatment factors were roasting temperature, roasting atmosphere, and ore cooling conditions. Bond ball mill grindability and work indices were used as response indicators in evaluating the condition of the ore. Of the three treatment factors evaluated, roasting atmosphere, which brought about the con version of iron oxides to magnetite, had the most significant effect; roasting temperature had the next most important effect; and cooling condition had the least effect. Optimum grindability was obtained with reduced-quenched products of both ores at 650° C, near the alpha-beta phase transformation of quartz.

The purpose of this study was to develop procedures to measure Bingham flow properties for mine tailings and to use these to predict the possible consequences of a hypothetical tailings flow failure at the Tenmile Tailings Pond at Climax, Colorado. The consequences of such a failure were found to be minimal, and the failure itself highly; unlikely. Values of Ty (Bingham yield shear strength) and np (plastic viscosity) were measured for 10 materials using results obtained from vaned coaxial viscometer tests and triaxial tests.

Manipulation of hand-held objects in 3D space is a complex task. Understanding how individual digits interact with a hand-held object provides helpful information for hand tool designers, researchers, clinicians, and occupational therapists. At the object-digit interface, the contact mechanics can be represented by three force and three torque components. Six-component force/torque transducers can register all the three forces and three torques at the digit-object interface, and therefore are advantageous in the study of manipulation mechanics. The large number of force and torque signals from multiple force/torque transducers are difficult to interpret and therefore making experimental research of manipulation a challenging task. The purpose of this study was to develop a 3D visualization tool for the investigation of the contact mechanics at the object-digit interfaces during manipulation tasks. Methods A 3D stick-figure hand model was created based on digitized 23 anatomical landmarks of the hand. Five miniature 6-component force/torque transducers (4 × Nano17 for the fingers, 1 × Mini40 for the thumb, ATI Industrial Automation, NC) were used to record force and torque data at the tips of individual digits. Thirty channels of force/torque signals from the transducers were collected by a 16-bit analogue-digital converter (PCI-6031, National Instrument, Austin, TX) installed in a computer. The transducers were mounted on a custom-made rectangular aluminum handle for object manipulation. Coordinate frames were established at each transducer, on the handle, and at the base of the MicroScribe digitizer. To visualize the force vectors at the digit-tips, the coordinates of the hand landmarks in the MicroScribe coordinate frame and the force vectors in local transducer coordinate frames were transformed to a common coordinate frame defined on the handle. One healthy right-handed, male subject participated in the experimental study. During the tests, the participant sat in a chair by a testing table. The forearm was strapped to an arm holder in neutral rotation position. The instrumented handle was fixed on the testing table by a C-clamp through an adapting plate. With the hand of the subject gripped on the instrumental handle, the landmarks of the instrumented handle and the transducers, as well as the anatomical landmarks of the hand were digitized using the MicroScribe digitizer for the purpose of coordinate frame establishment and transformation as described above. The subject performed three different maximum isometric voluntary contraction tasks: (1) grasping, (2) rotating in pronation, and (3) lifting. Results The 3D hand model and representative force vector clusters in a single trial of grasping, rotating, and lifting tasks are shown in Figure 1. This Bureau of Mines report discusses the electric-arc reduction of zirconium and hafnium oxides with carbon yielding a metal-metallic carbide mixture. The carbon to oxide ratio in the feed determines the metal to carbide ratio in the product. A sample of this product was produced -or testing as a feed for the deBoer iodide-dissociation process. A new technique for producing pure carbides is described, which uses the intense heat of the arc to volatilize the carbide. "INTRODUCTION Many ore deposits were discovered in the Wallapai Mining District, which covers the Cerbat Range in Mohave County, Ariz., during the early period of mining there from about 1865 to the 1890's. A considerable amount of production was obtained from shallow lead carbonate ores that carried considerable gold and silver.Mining was revived in 1906 and again during the First World War, and soma of the mines were deepened into the underlying sulfide zone. Substantial quantities of metal were recovered from two mines, the Golconda and the Tennessee-Schuylkill, that were, developed to depths of 1,600 and 1,400 feet, respectively. The Golconda is credited with $6,500,000 gross productions. 2/ This mine was not operated after 1917. The Tennessee-Schuylkill is still operating after a yield of about 300,000 tons of ore that averaged 4.33 percent lead and 7.74 percent zinc and contained an appreciable amount of gold and silver.Many of the old mines were reopened in 1942 or 1943 under the stimulus of premium prices for lead and zinc. A large proportion of this work was finished with loans from the Reconstruction Finance Corporation. It was believed that a good deal of lead and zinc could be recovered from the mines if a custom mill for concentration of the ores was available locally."

The Underground Injection Control program was promulgated in 1981 by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency under the provisions of the Safe Drinking Water Act. Placement of mine waste backfill underground is considered underground injection under the provisions of this program. A major issue is whether mine waste that is regulated as a contaminant source on the surface should be disposed of underground. The U.S. Bureau of Mines conducted research to investigate the impacts of mine waste sandfill on the quality of ground water. Analyses of water samples collected before and after contact with sandfill in a 10-year-old stope, as well as samples of the sandfill itself, were used to ascertain the influence of the sandfill after mine closure and subsequent flooding. Computer models supported the hypothesis that oxidation of pyrite by oxygen, accompanied by dissolution of carbonates, was the predominant reaction controlling the quality of the water being discharged from the stope. Concentrations of metals released as a result of acid production remained near or below detection limits. Metals release after mine flooding is expected to remain low as a result of the buffering by the sandfill and the reduced rate of oxidation.

A prototype mucking machine designed to operate in narrow-vein stopes was developed by Foster- Miller, Inc., Waltham, MA, under contract with the U.S. Bureau of Mines. The machine, called a compact loader-trammer, or minimucker, was designed to replace slusher muckers in narrow-vein underground mines. The minimucker is a six-wheel-drive, skid-steered, load-haul-dump (LHD) machine that loads muck at the front with a novel slide-bucket system and ejects it out the rear so that the machine does not have to be turned around. To correct deficiencies of the tether-remote-control system, a computer-based, radio-remote-control system was retrofitted to the minimucker. Initial tests indicated a need to assist the operator in guiding the machine in narrow stopes. An automatic guidance system that used ultrasonic ranging sensors and a wall-following algorithm was installed. Additional tests in a simulated test stope showed that these changes improved the operation of the minimucker. The design and functions of the minimucker and its computer-based, remote-control system are reviewed, and an ultrasonic-sensor-based guidance system is described.

A computer program was written for design and cost of a shell and tube heat exchanger in which the total cost, which includes annual fixed charges and annual operating costs, was minimized. The program was written for the type of heat exchanger in which only the tube side pumping costs were significant and for triangular pitch, single or multiple pass, heating or cooling, and no change in phase. Tube diameter was not optimized since the tube dimensions do not affect the cost very much. However, the tube dimensions do affect the shell diameter, number of tubes, and length of tubes; and price optimum design was obtained for four standard tube diameters. Standard heat exchangers having at least the required area are also listed. The program was made adaptable to various fluids and to various tube dimensions by including many of the required data such as physical properties of the fluids, tube data, and standard shell data as input data.
