The phenomenon of sympathetic detonations in blastholes is investigated by comparing experimental observations and numerical modelling results. Numerical modelling using the TDL computer code and Forest Fire decomposition rates for commercial explosives has shown the importance of blasthole diameter, impedance of stemming material and host rock. Comparison with experimental observations has also shown that sympathetic detonations cannot always be treated as shock to detonation transitions (SDT). Examination of previous results which have been obtained from calibrated low amplitude shock experiments reveal that there is an ignition threshold prior to the detonation threshold. The difference between the two thresholds is more pronounced in the case of air bubble sensitized products. The ignition threshold can be very important under the confinement provided by the blasthole and the conditions of application. It also correlates well with the pressures expected at the gap distances of interest in the practical application. It is suggested that critical energies are used as the criterion for cross initiation in blastholes. Practical suggestions based on the numerical calculations and experiments based on these calculations are also given and discussed.

Data is presented showing Penetration Rate (PR) versus Force-on-the Bit (FB) and Bit Angular Speed (N). Using this data, it is shown how FB and N each uniquely contribute to the PR for any particular drilling situation. This data represents many mining situations; including coal, copper, gold, iron ore and limestone quarrying. The important relationship between Penetration per Revolution (P/R) and the height of the cutting elements of the bit (CH) is discussed. Drill performance is then reviewed, considering the effect of FB and N on bit life. All this leads to recommendations for the operating values of FB and N for drilling situations where the rock is not highly abrasive and bit replacements are because of catastrophic failure of the bit cone bearings.

This paper presents the results of an experimental and numerical investigation of the shock wave energy transmission and reflection through boundary layers (joints, fractures) or between inhomogeneous geomedium with different physical properties. The conclusions drawn significantly clarify the dynamic failure mechanics because of shock wave energy transmission and reflection through different rock materials and their jointed interfaces. Thorough studies were performed to document the transient, two dimensional deformation characteristics, the normal and shear stress fields for inhomogeneous geomedium focusing on the influence of the internal geometrical shapes, relative density variations and packing of the grain boundaries.

A series of small-scale crater tests were performed in concrete and sand in an effort to understand the cratering process in large-scale field blasts. The surface orientation of these tests varied from flat to a 30° slope. In comparison to previous crater experiments in competent oil shale, the crater tests in concrete produced craters similar to those in oil shale after scaling the measurements for differences in the mass of explosives among the experiments. Material strengths and the degree of brittleness had a significant effect on the size and shape of the crater. The small-scale sand tests resulted in some crater features that were similar to large explosive tests in alluvium and soil.

Scaling laws commonly used for describing or predicting blast motions generated by conventional arrays of blastholes are dimensionally incorrect. The scaling of distance by the cube root of charge weight is correct only for spherical charges, and scaling by the square root of charge weight is incorrect for any charge configuration, although both approaches may result in empirically useful formulas for a limited range of charge sizes. Analysis of motions generated by a large set of underground blasts shows that scaling distance by the square root of the linear charge density, which is dimensionally correct for a cylindrical borehole, yields much more consistent results than the traditional scaling rules. Further, this scaling law is valid right up to the free face of the burden. A significant result of this work is that the peak particle velocity for an array of blastholes is primarily dependent on blasthole diameter and not on total charge weight or maximum explosive weight per delay, which are the commonly used parameters for scaling seismic amplitudes generated by conventional blasting arrays.

This paper evaluates the actual energy delivered by the explosives used in the fragmentation of rock during blasting vs. the available theoretical explosive energy. The evaluation of the fragmentation energy of the blast is first done. Fragmentation by blasting can be seen as a process in which creation of new surfaces within the rock mass is made by generation of new cracks or extension of pre-existing ones. From this idea, the fragmentation blast efficiency can be assessed as the fraction of the available explosive energy used for creation of new surfaces. The evaluation of new cracks area created by the blast is based on the SIMBLOC methodology and the corresponding fragmentation energy is then obtained by the Griffith theory. Secondly, the amount of energy delivered down to a certain pressure or volume along the detonation product expansion process, given by the useful work, is calculated. This is done by first determining the CJ state of the reacted explosive and subsequently performing an adiabatic expansion calculation of the detonation products from that state. W-Detcom code has been used for the calculations using the BKW equation of state with the Sandia parameter set. The fragmentation energy and the useful work are calculated for blasts performed in two mines in Spain. Multiple regression is applied to the results in order to give an assessment of the better description of the explosive energy .

The careful positioning of the drill rigs that drill the holes into which explosives are then loaded is critical to the success of the subsequent blast. Today a system of satellites in space, each transmitting radio signals, is being used to provide the data to allow for tracking and positioning of various types of ground-based mobile equipment. The system is the Global Positioning System or GPS for short. This paper focuses on the application of GPS to surface mining and in particular the navigating of rotary drills from hole-to-hole and their final precise positioning to drill each blast hole.

Accidental explosions occur throughout the world. They can happen at chemical plants, fireworks plants, grain depots, or as a result of collisions involving volatile or hazardous chemicals. It is interesting, as we know as blasters, that we can take two very harmless products and mix them under certain conditions and produce a violent explosion. It is often very difficult for the investigator to determine the magnitudes of blasts after the fact. However, an estimate must be made to settle vibration and airblast damage claims. The blasting consultant or technical representative is often called upon to act as an expert to mitigate these claims.

There is considerable evidence that more rational damage criteria need to be generated with regard to low-rise structures subjected to blasting vibrations. There is not sufficient basis for specifying a maximum ground particle velocity damage criterion such as 2 inches/second. A peak ground velocity guideline does not currently take into account a number of significant parameters, including the predominant frequencies of the ground motion excitation and the structure being excited. Although a number of states have adopted, or are adopting, maximum particle velocity criteria, such criteria have been ruled inadequate in certain legal decisions affecting blasting operations. The development of more rational damage criteria is thus of significant importance.

SAFEX International is a global organisation with more than 85 members, all of whom are manufacturers of explosives. On joining each member signs a declaration saying that they are willing to exchange information with regard to any accidents or near misses they may have in order to prevent the recurrence of the incident. SAFEX International was formed 50 years ago in Europe and has now built up a database of more than 700 accidents in the explosives business. Once every three years, an International Congress is held in which members address specific safety themes associated with the explosives industry, and also give details of "what went wrong?", "why?", and lessons learned. The next Congress will be held in Amsterdam between the 29th May and the 1st June 2002. This paper describes the operation of SAFEX International, which is dedicated to the international exchange of experience on industry connected accidents of the explosives business.

In order to investigate the effectiveness of tracer blasting in perimeter control and to understand its mechanism, a field experimentation was conducted which involved drifting, benching and pipe tests.

Energy released by the explosive is typically partitioned in brisance, heave and losses. The fact that energy released in the P-V expansion curve below a certain point is lost has resulted in the concept of available energy. Through simple calculations it is shown that energy released at pressure levels thought to be low, amounts to a significant proportion of the total energy value. Furthermore, throw calculations indicate that the assumed loss of that part of energy does not justify practical results. Loss of energy at the low pressure levels may also not be justified from the fragmentation point of view as pressure levels below 1 kbar are enough to extend radial fractures around a borehole. Finally the equation used for the P-V behaviour of the explosive gases is important in throw calculations. Simplified approaches may not reproduce the performance of the explosive which is not characterized only by its energy content.
