Blasting trials using Daveytronic Electronic Delay Detonator systems (EDD’s) were conducted at the Alpha Ferro Quany (Pretoria) and the Eikeboom Colliery near Witbank in November 1999. The objectives of the trials were to determine the influence of accurate hole firing on rock fragmentation, blast-induced vibration and blast throw. This paper provides an outline of the trials and an analysis of the results. The results were compared with a normal shock tube initiation system. Fragmentation was measured using video-imaging techniques at the hard rock Ferro Quarry for one conventional shock tube blast and two EDD blasts. No significant difference was measured in the fragmentation between the shock tube blast and the two electronic detonator blasts. Joint planes mostly defme the fragments at Ferro Quarry. The fragment sizing was therefore controlled mainly by the rock structure and the blast timing appeared to have no influence. Vibration measurements made at Ferro Quarry indicate that electronic detonators have a marked effect on vibration frequencies compared to shock tube systems. The more accurate detonators resulted in a narrower f+equency band at lower amplitude with similar timing. By modifying the blast timing, the dominant frequencies were changed. The electronic detonators had a significant positive influence, therefore on blast vibration and its control. The timing scatter measured from the shock tube blast was considerable, with measured inhole detonator scatter at 48 ms over a sample of 19 units. Surface delay periods less than 42 ms would therefore not be able to provide effective sequential firing. The scatter of the Daveytronic units was below the 2 ms resolution of the high-speed camera used to film the blasts. Reliable sequential firing, even at very short delay intervals was considered the main reason for notable improved throw in an overburden blast at Eikeboom Colliery. Blast throw was improved by 25% for the test blast.

Schedule IV containers in Canada and IME- containers in the United States have made possible the transport of mixed loads. That is, using these containers for detonators, one can simultaneously transport detonators and explosives on the same vehicle. As a result of a recent accident, the Canadian Chief Inspector of Explosives asked for a review of the appropriateness of the Schedule IV container in its present use. The Canadian Authority asked for a re-assessment of the adequacy of the Schedule IV container in preventing propagation of a reaction from the detonators in the container to the remainder of the explosives on the truck, and its ability to contain fragments generated by the detonators. A series of tests was performed to determine the initiation threshold temperature for non-electric detonators and the failure threshold temperature for the shock tube to establish some guidelines for preventing communication from one case of detonators to another within the transport container at elevated temperature. Tests fell into the following categories: inter-case sympathetic detonation, detonator thermal auto-initiation, shock tube thermal sensitivity, and intra-case sympathetic detonation. The results indicate that temperature is a critical factor, which determines to what extent, if any, communication occurs.

Aside from the mechanical properties and process of actual rock breakage, rotary drill bit performance is affected by several “post breakage” items: cuttings size, flushing air pressure, flushing air volume, cuttings load, drill hole geometry, etc. We all recognize that more efficient drilling creates bigger cuttings, more air pressure cleans the hole bottom better, more air clears the cuttings from the hole, and a better hole geometry allows cuttings to escape with a minimum of “regrind”.

This paper will focus on the use of Deflagrating Cartridges for tunnel excavation in Midtown Manhattan at Grand Central and 42nd Street Station, where the excavation has challenges due to the proximity of existing underground infrastructure and a contract blasting restriction. Skanska and FDNY’s collaborative teamwork successfully used deflagrating cartridges and gathered vibration data to properly predict ground vibrations on nearby infrastructure. In cities like Manhattan, conventional blasting excavation methods can be constrained or restricted entirely by the risk of damage to nearby structures, utilities, and disruption to everyday life on the streets. The introduction of Deflagrating Cartridges to the project offered a promising solution to mechanical excavation being used by providing controlled, precise, and deflagrating rock breaking capabilities that minimized disturbance to the above items. This technology minimizes the risk of vibration damage to preexisting infrastructure due to its reduced velocity of deflagration, making it useful for the location of our project. The team's approach involved numerous test shots to help determine the appropriate loading and timing sequence, as well as to collect data to properly be able to predict vibration on the adjacent structures. The successful application of deflagrating cartridges in the Grand Central area demonstrates their usefulness in logistically challenging underground excavation projects in urban cities. Through careful coordination and innovative use of this technology, the team was able to navigate the complexities of working near existing infrastructure while maintaining high levels of safety and productivity. Overall, our paper will speak to the importance of new technologies like deflagrating cartridges for usage in urban environments while minimizing disruption to the world above and below, the technology of these products, and the outcomes of our vibration data collection. By embracing these advancements, construction teams, owners, and other agencies can effectively address the unique challenges posed by projects in densely populated areas, while maintaining safety and productivity.

The critical nature of detonator function in blast design and its effects upon performance and safety of a blasting operation are well documented. Numerous laboratory and field studies have shown dynamic shock waves, generated by the detonating explosives in a shot, to be detrimental to the performance of the explosive columns in the adjacent boreholes. Laboratory tests conducted in Japan have explored the possible effects of dynamic precompression upon cartridges of emulsion explosives, which had been sensitized with different hotspot void producing methods. These tests uncovered significant differences in the magnitude of the dynamic shock wave pressures measured inside the different emulsion explosive cartridges, and demonstrated these pressure differences by crushing detonator shells inserted inside the emulsion cartridge. Basically, the results of these tests clearly showed the magnitude of the compressive force applied to the detonator inside the primed explosive cartridge to be a function of the mechanism that had been used to sensitize the emulsion (i.e., glass microspheres, plastic spheres, chemical gassing). The current study was designed to further explore the actual detonator failure mechanism in these dynamic precompression tests using live detonators inside the emulsion cartridge as opposed to empty detonator shells. The testing involved inserting commercial delay detonators inside emulsion charges, which had been sensitized with common hotspot void producing agents, and subjecting the primed explosive cartridge to the dynamic pressure wave generated by an underwater donor explosive charge. The effects of variations in the emulsion’s sensitization method upon the damage inflicted to the detonator were studied. Depending upon the degree of detonator damage, detonator crushing can lead to varying degrees of detonator malfunctions, ranging from sympathetic initiation of the detonator, to a reduction in delay time accuracy, to reduced detonator output, to complete detonator failure. Each of these malfunctions can have serious detrimental effects upon the performance and safety of a blasting operation.

This paper describes several damages of blasting operations on some case studies, analyzes causative factors, and emphasizes preventive measures. Due to several complaints from some host mining communities as a result of blasting operations; two quarries from Nigeria suburbs were visited for study. The blasting design parameters in the mining companies were examined. Also, the history and existing conclusion of the neighboring buildings were studied using structured questionnaire, personal contact and visual examination. From the study carried out, it was discovered that varying negative environmental and socio economic problems resulted from the effects of vibration and flyrock on the nearby agro mining communities. The consequences are not limited to distortion of landscape but also include extinction of some animals, poor agricultural productivity; such as damages to economic trees and reduction in the yield of crops, health problems as a result of shock resulting to psychological disturbances, communal conflicts, blast induced cracks of structures and sometimes total collapse of host agro mining buildings, thus indicating that most mines did not comply with the safety concept of the existing environmental laws and regulations. Based on the results of the study it was recommended that proper blast design of quarries/mines should be conducted and the compulsory use of seismograph will be crucial in developing predictions. Environmental impact assessment should always be conducted before, during and after each blasting operation. Very small scale testing has been shown to be able to predict quite accurately, in many situations, the results of full scale testing. Small scale tests are more cost efficient, easily observed, and easily instrumented than full scale tests. Over the past 10 years small scale testing in the Dynamic Effects Laboratory at the University of Maryland has been used to successfully study the response of structures and soils to explosive detonation. Small scale testing has been successfully used to predict full scale results in underwater cratering and channeling, the loading (both pressures and impulse) on vehicles due to the detonation of buried charges, the positive effects of bottom shaping for military vehicles to reduce this loading, and the movement of obstacles underwater by explosive charges.

Emulsion Explosives manufacturers are aware of the destabilizing effect that the presence of inorganic impurities such as magnesium and iron and organic impurities such as naphthalene sulfonates and alkyl amines can have on their emulsions. This destabilization often manifests itself as severe crystallization and subsequent product loss. This paper describes the performance testing of specifically developed emulsifiers which give greatly improved emulsion stability in the presence of high levels of impurities. The test work involved a series of stability tests using ammonium nitrate doped with various levels of crystal modifier and anti-caking agent. A further series of tests were done to evaluate the stability using ammonium nitrate doped with various levels of iron and magnesium ions.

It is widely recognised that complaints from members of the public relating to blasting operations are related to both ground vibration and air overpressure. It is also known that a complaint is more likely to be generated if the person is inside of a structure at the time of the blast. Reports relating to such complaints often refer to ‘noise’ inside the structure with terms like ‘rattling’ commonly being employed. Such acoustic response is widely perceived within the blasting industry to be directly related to high levels of air overpressure although there appears to have been very little research carried out specifically related to this effect.

The 80 year old Theodore Roosevelt Dam built in a scenic canyon near Globe, Arizona is currently undergoing a major renovation. The old stone dam, built by hundreds of skilled stonemasons, is being covered with a new concrete face that will increase the dam height by 77 feet. The renovated dam will improve flood control and provide increased electrical power and recreation area. The contractor, J.A. Jones is constructing the new dam and powerhouse for the Bureau of Reclamation.

We have developed a new firing system which simplifies the handling and extensively increases the safety in electric blasting operations. Based on the principle of the transformer, this system is operated as follows: When a high frequency alternating current pulse (70-110 kHz) is applied to the lead wire and connecting wire (primary circuit), magnetic flux is generated in the transcore, and an induced current flows through the looped leg wire of the detonator (secondary circuit). Then the detonators are ignited by the induced current.

Air and ground vibration from blasting is influenced by the delay pattern that is used. Wavefronts from blastholes fired in a blasting pattern can combine in certain circumstances to give increased blast vibration levels. A simple computer model has been developed which shows the combined effect of wavefronts from a multi-hole blast and identifies if wavefront reinforcement occurs, and permits delay patterns to be designed which will avoid or reduce wavefront reinforcement.

In 2008 a paper from the same source describing four actual cases of exposure of electronic detonators to lightning strikes was presented. It was shown that electronic detonators, like other initiation systems, are vulnerable to very close or direct lightning strikes. At the time of submitting this abstract no further incidents with lightning have been experienced. As a result of those original incidents, and in order to understand how the safety devices inside electronic detonators break down, two series of tests have been done, each with 2 detonator designs. In the first series detonators were subjected to capacitor discharges up to 6kV and 1kJ in energy. In the second series the intensity was increased to 800kV and 24kJ in energy. In the second series, more electrical energy was delivered to the detonator assembly than the explosive energy of the detonator. In both series both detonators showed a spectacular ability to resist very high discharge energies. The tests are described in detail with supporting photographs. The data for both pin-to-pin and pin-to-case (more relevant to lightning) are presented and discussed. The mechanism of breakdown of safety devices is now understood better and the learning is being used to design more robust products. At the end of 2016, the Mine started a new ore phase in the section of the pit located on the East Wall. The East Wall geological structures required controlled blasting for peak particle velocity (PPV) frequency vibrations to protect the wall. Frequency controlled blasting using linear seed wave superposition modeling was required and implemented to reduce the far-field affects to the wall. This paper covers the work done by the drill and blast engineering group, controls used to protect the mine infrastructure, and the continuation of work-to-date of frequency controlled blasting for wall stability. The narrow width of the layback required the combination of hole sizes to blast large diameter production patterns with smaller diameter trim patterns in the same blast. A single blast had to use different burden & spacing and hole diameters and required the use of different timings throughout the pattern. Electronic detonators were required to limit blast vibrations and accommodate the specific timings needed to reduce low frequencies. The geotechnical group with the help of geotechnical radars worked with the drill and blast group on creating a tracking and reporting of blast performance. During the reconstruction of the motorway Zagreb-Krapina three reinforced concrete bridges were demolished, for their width was not adequate for the new motorway. Demolition of the three bridges was carried out by blasting as duration of the traffic cut on the motorway and the railway was limited to maximally 4 hours. During that period of time the demolished bridges had to be removed. Therefore, very tiny granulation was requested suitable for loading and not endangering the surrounding structures. Before each of three main blasting, trial blasting were carried out including the seismic measurements registering the seismic effects. The nearest residential building was at the distance of less than 30 m from the place of blasting. Additional difficulty was the fact that by each of the three bridges there is a new bridge, with minimal distance between the old and the new bridge being 30 cm. As each of the bridges is of different construction and of various thickness, particular blasting technique has been prepared for each one of the bridges.
