Today there is a consensus that xanthate adsorption on sulfide minerals is primarily controlled by redox reactions occurring at specific potentials on these semi-conductive minerals. Consequently, it is possible to control xanthate adsorption by controlling electrochemical conditions in the system by using oxidizing and reducing agents. The scope of this study was to investigate the possibilities to increase the selectivity of Cu-Fe-Zn ore flotation by applying electrochemical control in the conditioning of the flotation feed. In this work, mild steel grinding in a nitrogen atmosphere was used as the basis to provide a negative starting potential and minimize the amount of oxidation products on sulfide mineral surfaces. To study how different potential levels affect flotation results, a controlled conditioning procedure was utilized maintaining potential at a desired level by titrating the pulp with air. Xanthate adsorption kinetics during conditioning was examined by taking pulp samples for spectrophotometric analysis and laboratory flotation tests were conducted for samples that underwent the controlled conditioning procedure in the potential range of -200mV to +200mV vs. SHE. A clear correlation was detected between chalcopyrite recovery and the potential during controlled conditioning indicating that there was a constant increase in chalcopyrite recovery when the potential was shifted to more anodic values. It is possible that utilizing potential control in the conditioning stage, a smelter grade copper concentrate can be achieved directly in rougher flotation without cleaning stages. Conditioning in favorable conditions had significant positive effects on flotation selectivity of chalcopyrite. The improvement in copper concentrate grade being predominantly caused by the depression of pyrite. By applying the controlled conditioning procedure pyrite recovery in rougher flotation was reduced even low as under 1%, while in the tests without controlled conditioning, pyrite recovery varied between 7.5 – 65.7%. The result of this work indicate that affecting collector adsorption by electrochemical control in the conditioning stage can provide significant improvement in sulfide mineral flotation and industrial applications could lead to decreased chemical consumption, reduced equipment and maintenance costs.

Coal is the prime source of energy in India. It now contributes to about 55% of the total power generation and will continue to have its major share in the energy mix of the country in the foreseeable future. Thermal coals of India, known for their wide variations in nature and categorized as difficult to wash due to their typical mineral matter association with the organic matrix, need suitable beneficiation technique for quality upgrade for improving the overall economics, efficiency and pollution free power generation. A non-coking high-ash coal, collected from Vasundhara open cast mine of the Ib Valley Coalfield, Orissa, has been characterized along with its different fractions obtained in the process of beneficiation for distribution of minerals using FTIR, XRD and ash analysis. The raw coal was fractionated by size as well as by density. It has been observed that ash yields and mineralogical composition (found to be mainly kaolinite and quartz) have no appreciable change in different size fractions, indicating homogeneous distribution of minerals in the coal matrix. However, for the different density fractions the mineral composition and ash yield have significant variations. The quartz content of the beneficiated coal visualized with 34% ash yield, as mandated by the Ministry of Environment and Forest (MOEF) for the use of coal in power plants is reduced to half of that of the raw coal. As quartz is the most abrasive mineral in coal, reduction of its proportion obviously signifies considerable reduction of wear of power plant machinery when beneficiated coal is fed to utility boiler for generation of power. "The research applies the density functional theory and molecule design technology to design and synthesize the novel flotation collectors for copper-sulphur separation. Density functional theory (DFT) was applied to investigate the electronic properties of O-isopropyl-N-benzyl thionocarbamate (IP-BIAN) and O-isopropyl-N-ethyl thionocarbamate (Z-200). The calculation results show that both the energy of highest occupied molecular orbital (EHOMO) and the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (ELUMO) of IP-BIAN are smaller than that of Z-200, electronegativity of IP-BIAN is higher than that of Z-200. According to the Klopman’s generalized perturbation theory, the collecting power of the two compounds is predicted to be Z-200 > IP-BIAN, the selectivity of IP-BIAN is better than that of Z-200. Then the thionocarbamate molecular is synthesized, and the compounds are characterized by nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR). It turns out that the test result identifies the prediction after the flotation verified test of pure mineral and actual mineral. The results demonstrate that the EHOMO and ELUMO are smaller in the thionocarbamate after a nitrogen atom is bound to benzyl, the thionocarbamate has strong selectivity and low collecting power. The lower the LUMO energy of thionocarbamate is, the stronger the back donation covalent p-bond between collectors and chalcopyrite is, thus improving flotation power for chalcopyrite and selectivity against pyrite. The result proves the feasibility of design and synthesis of the novel thionocarbamate through the frontier orbital properties of the collectors.1. INTRODUCTION Thiocarbamate is a kind of nonionic polar collector and is now widely used as flotation collector for copper-sulphur separation. The flotation power of thiocarbamate to chalcopyrite is stronger than pyrite, so it has high selectivity against pyrite. The frontier orbital theory and density functional theory (DFT) has been widely applied to study the structure-activity relationship of flotation collectors [1-6]. The flotation test results can be interpreted by using the reaction energy criteria and quantum-chemical parameters, such as the energy of the highest occupied molecular orbital (EHOMO) and the energy of the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (ELUMO) of collector [7-11]. In turn, there are rarely reports about screening the novel flotation collector, by the frontier orbital properties such as HOMO and LUMO of flotation collectors. In this thesis, we apply the density functional theory and molecule design technology to design and synthesize the novel flotation collectors for copper-sulphur separation. Based on the previous findings of the structure-activity relationship of xanthogen formats [12], it has stronger collecting ability to chalcopyrite while the xanthogen formats after a nitrogen atom is bound to benzyl. Thus, in this study, a novel thionocarbamate molecule O-isopropyl-N-benzyl thionocarbamate (IP-BIAN) will be constructed, when the group structure connected with N atom in the known collector O-isopropyl-N-ethyl thionocarbamate (Z-200) is replaced with ethyl by propyl. The collectors (IP-BIAN and Z-200) have been calculated by DFT methods in quantum chemistry. By analyzing the reaction energy criteria and the frontier orbital properties (HOMO and LUMO), this research predicts flotation performance of novel collectors (IP-BIAN), then the synthetic experiments and flotation verified tests are conducted. The research provides a new theory reference for screening out the high-effective flotation collectors of copper-sulphur separation. This technology adoption will contribute to the sustainable development of mineral resources as it shortens the research cycle of new collector molecules and reduces the investment."

Bor flotation tailings are very interesting from two reasons: first, is having due value presently, and second represent serious pollutant into this region of Balkan. This paper is only one small part of investigation about processing of valuable minerals from tailings, and desulphurization of this biggest pollutant in the same time, by refloating. The main objective of this work is to pay attention on this problem for resolve greatest environ-mental problem of Serbia and Balkan in the nearly future. Bor is potential regional risk spot, since that failure of its tailings dams would release high amounts of toxic materials that would reach the Danube River. The basic goal of this experimental investigation was finding some possibility for flotation tailings treatment by classical froth flotation. In order was obtained material effect through copper recovery, and environmental protection by moving the rest of reprocessing into the safe place. The work present obtained results of laboratory tests in two laboratories: laboratory of mineral and recycling technology at the faculty in Bor, and laboratory of department of mineral processing of ITNMS in Belgrade.

"Three important components of stirred tanks involved in energy consumption, the impellers and baffles, were investigated to intensify the agitation pretreatment on the flotation of nickel ores. Flotation tests revealed that the stirred tanks with two impellers had an advantage over those with one impeller in intensifying agitation pretreatment, and the higher agitation speed led to better flotation performance of nickel ores. Installation and removal of baffles were also employed in the stirred tanks, and flotation tests demonstrated that with baffles, the flotation grade increased significantly. These agitator design improvements were used to demonstrate that the energy supplied to the system significantly influences the flotation recovery and that if the energy consumption of the agitation pretreatment is ideal, flotation efficiency can be improved. Data from full-scale operations backed up these results.INTRODUCTIONThe flotation recovery of nickel-copper sulphide ore at the Western China nickel mine has historically been difficult due to the presence of large amounts of serpentine minerals (Feng, et al., 2012). Many studies reported that serpentine minerals tend to have a positive potential at pH values up to 9.5, while sulphides (such as pentlandite and chalcopyrite) have a low isoelectric point(Feng, et al., 2012). Serpentine minerals can form surface coatings on negatively charged sulphides surface due to electrostatic attraction when they interact with each other, which may also reduce collector adsorption and increase the hydrophilicity of the sulphide particles. In order to improve the flotation of nickel sulphides, sodium hexametaphosphate, sodium silicate, carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC), and other agents are used to disperse serpentine coating from sulphide surfaces in the flotation of the Jinchuan deposit and other nickel ores in China ( Kirjavainen and Heiskanen, 2007; Lu, et al., 2011). However, it is difficult to improve of the sulphide flotation due to the high dosage and the lack of selectivity."

In order to raise the utilization rate of phosphate resource of Al-Jalamid Mine in Saudi Arabia, a flotation experiment for its phosphate rock was carried out by using WF-01collector that have been produced by Wengfu Phosphate Mine. The results showed that WF-01 collector had extensive adaptability for Al-Jalamid phosphate rock, and the grade of phosphate concentrate could be up to 33% P2O5 mixing the upper, middle and lower beds rock as well as its 80% more recovery.

Brazil and Colombia have large reserves of coal, those reserves in Brazil are located predominantly in the south and Colombia the main reserves are located in the north. Despite the relative ease of exploitation, these resources have been underestimated as a source of energy. Currently, these countries are developing projects and partnerships aiming to qualify this mineral resource, adding quality to the final product of the processing plants. In this scenario the processing of Brazilian and Colombian coal in flotation columns appears as a promising alternative, having been successful in mineral systems containing fine particles This paper aims to study the overall process of column flotation for a specific Brazilian coal and a specific Colombian coal. The material used in this study consists of fine coal from Brazil (Copelmi) and Colombia (Cerrejon). The objective is to recover carbonaceous matter and reduce the ash and contaminants grade. The two coals were floated using a negative bias in a 5 cm diameter conventional flotation column of 5 m high. Flotation parameter investigated included air velocity in the range 0.6 to 1.5 cm/s. For all runs, a constant negative bias of -0.25 cm/s and a pulp concentration of 8% w/w were used. For Cerrejón coal, 300 g/ton of frother and 907 g/ton of collector was used, whereas for Copelmi coal, 600 g/ton of frother and 1815 g/ton of collector was employed. The frother was a commercial Aerofroth 65 (AF65), whereas the collector was Kerosene. For the Colombian coal, in general, yield, organic recovery, ash recovery and water recovery decreased with the increasing air rate. However, for Brazilian coal the air rate had no significant effect. For Colombian coal, the highest yield (60% w/w) and organic recovery (69% w/w) were obtained at the lowest air rate (0,6 cm/s). This paper describes the inseparable relation between product design, liberation, and metallurgical recovery in the optimisation of the recycling of passenger vehicles. This is illustrated by the use of an optimisation model that uses among others a material combination matrix based on metallurgical process data, which depicts the consequences of the quality of intermediate recycling products on the metallurgical material recovery and final alloy metal quality. Various simulations will illustrate the effect of changes in product design and hence liberation on the recycling of end-of-life vehicles. Although this paper focuses on cars, the discussion is equally valid for any end-of-life product. Calibration of the model will be discussed with reference to experiments carried out in order to study the optimal recovery of aluminium applications used in passenger vehicles.

Dense medium cyclones have been in use for washing coarse and small coals for more than 50 years. There have been modifications in its design and today these units have become indispensable for washing of Indian coals possessing difficult washing characteristics. About 53 percent of the Indian coals (coking and non-coking) are being washed in jigs, about 38 per cent are washed in dense medium cyclones while the remaining 9 per cent is treated in other units like Barrel Washers, Heavy Media Baths and Drum Separators etc. The present paper deals with the attempts made for design of industrial Dense Medium Cyclones for enhanced coal recovery. Two industrial units of 500 mm diameter and 650 mm diameter were designed with their washing capacities being 200 m3/hr and 350 m3/hr, respectively. The results of the pilot tests conducted on 500 mm cyclone treating very high Near Gravity Material coals crushed to -3.0+0.5 mm gave an ash reduction of up to 19.5 percent with the new design i.e., from a feed ash of 34.5 percent to 15.06 percent in clean coal with an appreciable yield of 45 percent in one stage.

The effect of the acid anion on chalcopyrite (CuFeS2) leaching has been examined, under care-fully controlled conditions, in a range of acids in stirred reactors and columns at pH 1. Solution speciation calculations were performed to determine possible rate controlling species. The relative leach rates of Cu from chalcopyrite can be explained quantitatively entirely on the basis of solution speciation without the need to invoke any rational relating to surface structure/speciation. The rate of Cu release is first order with respect to Fe3+ activity. The stirred batch reactor experiments at fixed pH 1, Eh of 750 mV (SHE) and 75? showed that chalcopyrite leach rates were rapid in both HClO4 and H2SO4 with 100 % Cu recovery after 73h and 97 h respectively. However, the leach rate in H2SO4 was slower as compared to the HClO4 leach due to a slower increase in the activity of Fe3+ due to the formation of FeSO4-. The presence of Cl- in the leaches (HCl and H2SO4 with NaCl added) led to a low activity of Fe3+, due to the high activity of FeCl2+, resulting in very low leach rates. For the column leach experiments dissolution of Fe and Cu from the pH 1 HCl eluted chalcopy-rite column with quartz proceeded at several times the rate of any other column (chalcopyrite with and without quartz and/or pyrite leached with H2SO4, HClO4, HCl). Three observations indicate that galvanic interactions are not leach rate controlling role: a) The rate of leaching was not uniformly increased for the non-quartz containing columns where the two sulfide minerals, chalcopyrite and pyrite, are in physical contact as compared to the analogous quartz containing columns where they are not; b) there exists a reasonable correlation between the rate of Cu release and the effluent Fe3+ activity for all columns thus indicating that the leach rate is determined by solution speciation; and c) in all cases the proportion of Fe to Cu leached indicates preferential dissolution of Cu over Fe. However, the proportion of Fe to Cu is either the same or greater than expected on the basis of the single mineral columns. This indicates that chalcopyrite is not dissolving preferentially to pyrite.

"High Pressure Grinding Rolls (HPGR) is increasingly being chosen for comminution circuits for its energy-efficiency for hard rock mining operations. Despite HPGR’s growing popularity, geo-metallurgy programs are still prohibitively expensive because of large sample requirements. Traditionally, sizing HPGR application requires a significant amount of sample, in the order of 1 to 10 tonnes, depending on the level of study and complexity of the resource. Therefore, engineering and design of HPGR circuits typically are reliant on few composites that are required to be representative of the resource and mine plan. Three bench scale HPGR test methodologies were developed in 2015 at NBK Institute of Mining Engineering at the University of British Columbia (UBC) capable of defining the energy size breakage relationship of pilot HPGR. These methodologies were developed to allow bench scale testing for different levels of study from PEA (Preliminary Economic Assessment) to detailed design and operations. The Piston Press test defines the energy size reduction relationship by measuring specific energy consumption and corresponding feed and product size distributions. The advantage of Piston Press testing is the small sample requirement of 5 to 10 kg. Small sample requirements allow multiple samples to be tested across a deposit. Piston Press testing allows extensive geo-metallurgy programs that can determine ore variability and inform in optimization and production planning. To date, the Piston Press methodologies have been validated on a pilot-scale HPGR unit located at UBC. Recently, testing was conducted to calibrate and validate the Piston Press test against full-scale HPGR on a gold sulphide ore deposit. The program included the collection of operational data with the respective HPGR feed and recycle sample. Sample collected was used both for Piston Press testing and HPGR piloting. This paper discusses the test-work and results as carried out during this program, using the aforementioned methodologies."

The separation in gravity concentrators is based on the density difference between valuable and gangue minerals. In addition to density, many auxiliary parameters like particle size, shape, feed rate, pulp density etc. plays an important role in the separation. The performance efficiency of gravity units is largely based on the interference of such auxiliary parameters during separation. Many gravity concentrators are used for the beneficiation of cassiterite ores and performance of which are varying with different feed material, particle size and required enrichment from the unit. Selection of gravity units is generally based on laboratory testing and data collected from the previous experience. In the present investigation cassiterite ore collected from Uljin deposit, South Korea has been subjected to various gravity units like jig, spiral, and Knelson concentrator with the intension to pre-concentrate the ore. Second stage concentration was carried out using shaking tables. The article mainly summarizes performance evaluation methods employed for gravity concentrators. Selection of gravity circuit for the beneficiation of cassiterite was made on the basis of the recovery-grade curve, and Tromp curve methods. Coke combustion during sintering process is significantly governed by coke breeze size distribution, which in turn affect sinter quality i.e. sinter granulometry, Tumbler index, Reduction Degradation Index and Reducibility Index of sinter. To know the effect of microfines of coke breeze on sintering process parameters, pot sintering tests were conducted and it was found that when microfines are eliminated and optimum coke size (1-3mm) is used yield of sinter increased by more than 7%. Similarly productivity increased by 9%, the strength of sinter i.e. ISO Tumbler Index increased by 2.3% and +10mm sinter size increased by 5.5%. Controlling of microfines during crushing and by improving crushing index will result in improved quality and productivity of sinter with lesser amount of coke breeze. This paper describes that how to optimize solid fuel i.e. coke breeze consumption in sintering process through granulometry control. The surface-active agent, like sodium humate, in the present systems produces a very stable suspension. Saline water up to 15% is used as a flocculating agent for recovery of water from the dispersed phase containing 1% solid. The recovered water in the presence of humate at different concentrations (0.05-0.2%) and at pH 8 also produces a stable dispersed phase of iron ore fines and tailings. The beneficiation techniques adopted in the present systems can increase ~ 2-3% iron value in the concentrate of iron ore fine, however, for tailings the increase in iron value is not observed. The majority of the world?s nickel (Ni) resources occur as laterite ores, which are exceptionally complex, lower grade (<1.5% Ni) and expensive to treat using conventional smelting and high temperature/pressure autoclave methods. Heap leaching is a promising, less costly, alternative technology for processing low grade nickel laterite ores. However, significant technical challenges remain with Nickel laterite heap leaching, preventing its general adoption. This paper presents some highlights of laboratory column leaching studies undertaken to characterise, evaluate and optimise sulphuric acid leaching behaviour of Nickel laterite agglomerates. They provide basic but valuable information regarding Nickel laterite agglomerate structure stability and leaching performance under industrially-relevant, continuous acid irrigation conditions. In particular, Nickel and other key metals? (e.g. Co, Fe, Al and Mn) extraction rates, free acid concentration, bed slump and structural changes were determined at a given acid percolation rate as a function of time. Potential implications of the findings, for devising strategies for improved Nickel laterite plant heap leach operations are discussed. An experimental investigation has been carried out using a laboratory scale Denver flotation cell. For evaluation of cokeable coal of Alborze Sharghi coal washing plant, the full factorial method was used to statistically design and analyse the experiments. The 2 factorial interaction model were developed for combustible recovery and ash content as response and diesel dosage, conditioning time, feed percent solids and rotor speed as factors. Model validation and residual analysis were con-ducted and results indicated that the fitness, predictability power and residual distributions of models were good. The effect of parameters and interactions were examined and it has been demonstrated that rotor speed, solid percent and interaction between diesel dosage and solid percent were more important terms of all responses. A product with approximately 78% combustible recovery and 10% ash content was obtained at 4000gr/ton diesel fuel oil (high level), 30 sec conditioning time (low level), feed percent solids of 15% (low level) and 800 rpm rotor speed in appropriate condition.

A large scale a polymetallic mine in north China is a refractory ore containing many useful com-ponents: W, Mo, Cu and Fe. Mineralogical investigation shows that the deposit is a quite complex one due to fine disseminated size and unevenly distribution of valuable, intergroth of sulphide and tungsten minerals, concurrence of scheelite and calcium minerals. Based on ore characteristic, a flowsheet is used by the floatation processing of sulfide minerals superior to scheelite. Bulk sulphide flotation is used in sulphides. Mo and Cu are floated in sequence after sulphides regrinded. Tungsten mineral is floated using combined depressant that is an effective depressant to gangue, and can improve the grade of rough tungsten concentrate. Compound depressant has high effective in removal of collector in gangue and sulphide, and tungsten is activated also. High quality of tungsten concentrate is obtained at satisfactory recovery. The test production obtains Mo concentrate with grade of 48.16%, recovery of 81.43%; W concentrate with grade of 66.47%, recovery of 78.19%; Cu concentrate with grade of 23.14%, recovery of 56.6%; Fe concentrate with grade of 67.33%. The valuable metals are recovered comprehensively and well techno-economic index is obtained. The mine enterprise profit is increased greatly.

Frothers play major roles in flotation through interaction at the air/water interface. A method of determining frother adsorption density (coverage), i.e., the number of molecules per unit of interfacial area of bubble surface, is introduced. The technique is based on mass balancing the frother around a continuously operated bubble column. The mass balance requires collection of bubbles before they burst. Spherical grinding media (balls) are the most widely used media for comminution of ores by grinding. A modelling simulation study of the behavior of two grinding media in the grinding process was conducted to determine the possible advantages of the new shape milling bodies called tetraballpebs. Tetraballpebs are in the shape of tetrahedrons with spherical convex walls. A three dimensional CAD model of the mill drum with a diameter of 1200 mm was used. A continuous operating mode was simulated in terms of the 3D contact elements of the model (milling bodies and mill drum). Simulation tests were carried out in a typical grinding mode and at a typical rotational speed of the drum mill (75 per cent of the critical speed in cataracting mode). Studies carried out with both grinding media include equal number of milling bodies with the same weight and volume. Having thus ensured a uniform mass of the grinding media and same number of milling bodies, and constant other conditions and process parameters, conclusions can be drawn about the influence of the shape of the milling bodies on the grinding process. The simulation study on the process of iron ore beneficiation plant of Essar Steel, Kirandul was carried out. The iron ore fines and slimes generated nearby Bailadila mines of NMDC are used as raw materials for this beneficiation plant. The capacity of the plant is 1400 TPH operating in parallel in two streams. The capacity of the plant was utilized about 60% of throughput capacity. To improve the plant capacity as well as quality performance, the simulation study was conducted to detect the bottleneck of the process. The process samples were collected from input and output of each processing unit operation to generate the data base for simulation study at the feed rate of 400 and 500 TPH of iron ore fines in a single stream. The characteristics data i.e., breakage and selection functions were generated using MILLSOFT package for simulation of ball mills. Then MODSIM package was used to evaluate the performance of each unit operation to identify the bottleneck. It was established by a simulation study that the intermediate thickener draws high current when the feed rate is more than 400 TPH due to high torque drawn by rotating rake because of presence of coarse particles in the input stream to thickener. The problem was sorted out by classification of input stream of thickener to remove the coarse particles. Then the process was simulated at its rated capacity, and experimental validation studies at the plant were also conducted at the feed capacity of 600 and 700 TPH by modification of process flowsheet. The experimental data was almost matching with simulated data. Finally, the processing plant is running with full rated capacity without any bottleneck.
