Cold drawing of copper wire rod is usually combined with an in-line annealing process to adjust the ductile microstructure of the wire again. One important key factor for successful annealing is the quality of the copper itself. Rod producers can check the recrystallization behaviour of the rod by different methods: chemical analysis, Spiral Elongation Test (SEN) as well as the Rapid Elongation Test (AR) are some examples of common testing methods. The comparison of the results of these methods does not always show sufficient correlations. The paper introduces firstly the SEN and AR-Tests and their different approaches to the mentioned task. The second step is to compare some results of the SEN-Test with the results of the AR-Test and identify causes of deviations. Thirdly, the effect of pre-annealing is discussed, which is especially common for wire rod with diameters of more than 8 mm.

In mining operations the cost of timber is an item of much importance, because the life of mine timbers is, in many cases, very short and, as the supply of the better grades becomes depleted, less durable kinds must be used. This, of course, tends to shorten still further the period of service-ability. While it is possible that concrete and steel may, to some extent, take the place of timber in mines, their high initial cost and the difficulty in installation will greatly restrict their use. Moreover, wood, besides being comparatively cheap to handle, possesses other desirable qualities, and for many purposes a satisfactory substitute is hard to find. Both the decreasing supply and the increasing price of timber make its more efficient utilization imperative. AGENCIES DESTRUCTIVE TO MINE TIMBERS Timber used in mines is exposed to destruction from many sources. Wear, breakage, and waste are responsible for much loss. Wood rollers and drum laggings must be frequently replaced on account of the constant wear by ropes. Unprotected timber in chutes and mills is also rapidly worn by abrasion, and track ties in main haulage ways get worn by the feet of mules, cut by ropes, etc. Large amounts of timber are broken by 'crush' and 'squeeze,' and much temporary timber is buried beyond all recovery in pillar workings and in those mines which resort to back filling. Decay and insect attack, however, cause the greatest damage. If not totally destroyed by one or both of these, the timbers frequently become so weakened that they break under the pressure upon them.

THE prospecter and geologist in the field, in the search for gold, are very often faced with a real difficulty. The: mineralized rock _frequently contains gold which is so finely divided or associated with sulphides that it is not recognizable in the gold pan. In recent years, the practice has been to take samples, send them to an assay office, and sit down and wait for results. This paper describes a method of solving the difficulty of proving the presence of this fine gold. The investigation is still in an experimental stage; but certain results have been obtained which would seem to justify publication. We do not consider that the method outlined is quantitative, but we believe that qualitative results are assured. The procedure has the great merit of simplicity. A sample of approximately two pounds of the mineralized rock should be taken and powdered as fine as is practicable. This powder is theo panned and the heavy minerals concentrated. Approximately two grams of these concentrates are taken for the test (one gram can be roughly gauged in the field by heaping up the powder on a Canadian twenty-five cent piece). The material is placed in a test-tube and 6 c.c. of a 10 per cent solution of iodine in alcohol are added (one-third of a test-tube full is approximately equal to 6 c.c.). Heat gently for about ten minutes over a spirit lamp, but without actual boiling. Allow to stand undisturbed until the sediment has settled to the bottom. Remove the clear iodine solution with an eye dropper. Allow it to fall, drop after drop, on a warmed pyrex watch-glass (the drops should be of equal size), taking care that the successive drops fall in the same place and that each drop evaporates before the next drop falls. Heat is applied to the lower side of the watch-glass by means of a spirit lamp. If gold is present in amounts of $2.00 or more per ton, a gold mirror will be formed on the watch-glass. This process of dropping and evaporating should be continued until no clear solution remains. If no mirror has appeared when all the solution has been used, another 6 c.c. of the iodine solution should be added to the powder and the process repeated. The absence of a mirror after the double treatment denotes an amount of gold less than two dollars per ton at the present price, or that the ore contains no gold. The mirror obtained must be washed with nitric acid ( 1: 1) to remove any copper, silver, lead, zinc, and iron. The yellow mirror remaining is pure gold.

Kennecott Utah Copper Refinery and Outokumpu Technology have developed a wireless Electrolytic Cell Monitor (CellSensor) system to monitor cell voltage and temperature. The system is based on a robust self-organizing and self-healing wireless network with a very reliable redundant structure. The microprocessor controlled CellSensor device operates off a small amount of energy harvested from the cell bus and requires no external power source. The radio works in the 2.4 GHz international ISM band using robust Spread Spectrum technology. The CellSensor does not require end user calibration of either the voltage or temperature sensors and accuracy is superior to previous systems. The on-board computation power allows digital filtering of the cell voltage signal which results in very high quality data. The system requires much less maintenance than conventional hardwired systems and is intrinsically safer since no high voltage isolation is required. The advanced diagnostic functions allow the device to determine if the bus tap contact is degrading. The CellSensor can also be used for monitoring electrowinning (EW) cells for a variety of metals. CellSensor have been tested for over two years at the Kennecott Utah Copper and Boliden Harjavalta Pori refineries. The CellSensor system is now commercially available through Outokumpu Technology.

Control of arsenic in the Potrerillos' Refinery electrolyte has been obtained by withdrawing a bleed stream of circulating electrolyte and ensuring the ratio of [O]/[As] in the cast anodes is maintained between 0.9 and 1.0. In order to achieve this control the anode oxygen must be adjusted, depending on the arsenic level in the cast anodes. It has been necessary to modify the time of the reduction step in the anode furnace refining process. Control of this ratio has permitted electro refining of anodes with high levels of arsenic, up to 3000 ppm, while minimizing the volume of electrolyte that must be removed for impurity control so as not to affect the copper concentration in the electrolyte. However this control strategy is not useful when the arsenic concentration in the cast anode is too high, because it is limited by the maximum oxygen concentration allowable for a good quality anodic. Costs have been reduced in anode furnace refining because it is no longer necessary to use alkaline flux injection to remove the arsenic in cast anodes.

IF gold mining is to assume, or it might be better said to resume, a place of ' importance in the national economy of this country following the present war, then one must accept the thesis that gold will maintain the place it has for many generations held in the minds of men as a substantial and lasting emblem of material wealth-a metal in exchange for which men have always been ready to give up the possession of their worldly goods. The thought bas been advanced by some that gold is not necessary as a basis for exchange, that it has no real value anyway and, therefore, the world would wake up some morning to find that no one wanted gold and that, over night, its possession bad in some way ceased to be desired. Holding an equally extreme view there are those who advance the idea that, following the war, gold will in some mysterious way enjoy a fantastic increase in value. Neither of these extreme views can be successfully supported. To presume that by legislation or by general agreement gold would be or could be, over night, dethroned to the position of common stone is wholly beyond the realm of any possibility. The thought that this could come to pass is advanced by, and is attractive to, only those peoples who do not have gold and do r:ot have the means of producing it. To believe that the fundamental value of gold will suddenly change is likewise fantastic. I refer to the fundamental value, not the dollar price, of gold, for it cannot be denied that, with the colossal war expenditures now being made and with the huge national debts which are being piled up, there is a possibility, indeed per-haps a likelihood, that the dollar price .of gold may be revised upward. For the purpose of this discussion, however, that possibility is irrelevant and need not be considered.

The case of the P. G. E. railway is a peculiar one. Traversing, as it does, to a large extent, a mineralized country there are as yet no producing mines along its route although I am convinced that mines will be developed in the region tributary to the railway. The Fitzimmons group of claims, a copper property near Mons station, 37 miles from Squamish is now (unless recently relinquished) under bond to the Granby Company. On Cadwallader creek, in the upper Bridge river country, certain gold properties, referred to later, are being developed. Prospectors are fairly active in the Pemberton meadows area. There are also a large number in the Bridge river, Gun creek, and Whitewater districts. East of Marguerite station some development work is being prosecuted on some copper claims located there. In addition here and there throughout the entire route of the railway prospecting is being undertaken. At Hat creek, 15 miles from Pavilion station there is an enormous deposit of lignite. It is by no means certain that this coal can be profitably mined and hauled to the railway, but as a cheap fuel it offers possibilities in the recovery of by-products by destructive distillation. Logical procedure would ? indicate the expenditure of considerable money on development and, if results justify, the construction of a spur from the main line to the deposit.

One critical issue in chloride hydrometallurgy is the regeneration of the lixiviant HCl that is currently achieved by pyrohydrolysis. In this paper, a low temperature HCl regeneration process was investigated which regenerates HCl and produces saleable gypsum. This process promises to reduce the generation of wastes by the reaction of spent calcium chloride leach liquors with sulfuric acid solution at low temperature. Experiments were performed to determine the optimum conditions of the reaction in terms of temperature, reagent concentrations, rate of reagent addition, mixing and seeding/recycling to produce marketable gypsum and HCl with practical strength.

There are two things on everyone's lips when mining folks gather these days - one is the exciting business opportunities that now exist for mine development and expansion, and the other is the dire shortage of human resources needed to design, manage, and even operate the mines. Years of stagnant industry growth, limited employment opportunities, and unwarranted perceptions of remote and harsh working conditions have caused mining to be a less than desirable career choice. Attrition and reduced entry to the workforce has resulted in shortages for not only mining professionals, but also skilled trades people and operators. Consequently, to survive, let alone grow, mining companies, suppliers, and educators are all pursuing innovative solutions with technology, inter-industry recruiting, centralized services, and strategic partnerships. This paper describes some of these initiatives and proposes others, now that the people are gone!

"SINCE I received and accepted your invitation to present to this meeting a paper on A Canadian Integrated Coal and Steel Industry, I have given the subject a great deal of intensive study.Two conclusions have emerged from my considerations: first, that the subject should be dealt with by a person having a firm grasp of its technical aspects; and second, that it is a subject which requires expert analysis of the complicated problems it presents in pure economics.A third conclusion inevitably results from the two just mentioned -namely, that the mantle of the prophet which has been draped up-on my shoulders is too large for me to wear, because I am neither a practical nor a theoretical coal and steel man; and I am not an economist.With the warning that I have discovered, and am keenly conscious of, the inadequacy of my background for the task, I shall attempt to place before you those aspects of my subject which appear to high-light it from a layman's point of view.In the first place, in .order to avoid confusion as between my audience and myself, some definition of terms may be required.As I interpret it I am discussing -a coal and steel industry, using the last word in the generic and not the unit sense, self-sufficient in the provision of all its needs from within the geographical limits of Canada.Now, I start with the proposition that, in the very broadest aspects of such a concept, the Corporation of which I happen to be the executive head meets my definition as a combination of operations resulting in one fully integrated unit of a coal and steel industry."

"Extruded aluminum profiles are increasingly used for lightweight vehicle construction. Since fracture strains of aluminum profiles are relatively low, damage modeling is crucial for reliable crash simulation. For aluminum profiles, not only the stress state but also the orientation influenced both the deformation and damage behavior. For the material characterization smooth tensile tests were performed in six orientations, both stress-strain curves and r-values were registered. Moreover notched tensile and shear-tension tests were performed in three directions. Finally punch specimens were tested to investigate biaxial loading. Digital image correlation (DIC) analyses were performed to determine local strain values such as critical values at failure. Numerical investigations were conducted with the strain based damage model GISSMO, which is well suited and widely applied for crash simulation. For a strain based failure model the choice of the deformation model is crucial. Deformation models with increasing complexity were investigated to find the best compromise over all experiments. It was found that there is still a great requirement on development of a material model which describes the orientation dependence of the hardening behavior over all stress states in order to be able to use a strain based failure model reliably.INTRODUCTION Weight reduction is an important step for less energy consumption and as a consequence aluminium is increasingly used in automotive parts. An important field of application is the well-established aluminium extrusion which allows the realisation of quite complex shapes of profiles required for an innovative lightweight design with integrated functions. Typical applications are chassis parts, bumpers, crash elements, air bags, etc. Especially the Al–Mg–Si medium strength alloys of the 6000 series can be easily extruded to form complex profiles and prevail for extrusion. Since fracture strains of aluminum profiles are relatively low, damage modeling is crucial for reliable crash simulation. For aluminum profiles not only the influence of the stress state but also the orientation with respect to the extrusion direction have an influence on both the deformation and damage behavior and need to be characterized. The effect of orientation on deformation behavior has been intensively investigated in the last decades and material models haves been proposed (e.g. Barlat & Lian, 1989; Barlat, Lege, & Brem, 1991; Barlat et al., 2003) to describe accurately anisotropic behavior. However it can be noticed that the parameters of anisotropic material models often rely on the yield stress in different directions, which means that the effect of strain hardening is not automatically accounted for. The accuracy of the models at large deformation is not guaranteed and has to be verified. In contrast to deformation models both the characterisation and the modeling of anisotropic damage behavior are not systematically studied. Isotropic failure models based on a critical strain as function of stress triaxiality (ratio of the hydrostatic stress to von Mises equivalent stress) are widely used for crash application (e.g., Bai & Wierzbicki, 2010; Sun, Andrieux & Feucht, 2009; Sun et al., 2013). The mechanisms of failure are manifold and not fully understood; to develop an anisotropic failure model it is mandatory to also have experimental data in different orientations for loading scenarios other than uniaxial tension, e. g. shear, biaxial tension, which implies an extensive experiment plan. This makes the development of failure models more challenging than deformation models for which it is possible to develop a reasonable anisotropic model using the framework of yield function and calibrate the material parameters based on results of tensile tests in different directions. For over 150 years gypsum from Nova Scotia has been shipped via water to the United States east coast. The history of the movement has been one of continual improvements in quarrying, loading, and shipping. At the start, man-size rock quarried by hand auger and black powder was loaded into horse-drawn carts, hauled to the waterfront, and dumped into 100-ton sailing schooners. Last year the Canadian Gypsum Company completed the latest and most modern of these successive installations for the movement of this Nova Scotia product. The new system loads crushed gypsum into 11,600-ton vessels at Hantsport in two hours' time at high tide. At the head of the bay of Fundy are located vast deposits of gypsum. The tidal rise and fall of 45 feet twice a day, with its attendant swift currents, has always presented major navigation and shipping problems. When the tide is low, the Hantsport ship-loading pier is high and dry, with no water within 400 feet. Three hours later a large river has flooded in (running up hill) and large steamers can dock at the wharf. Before high water, the ship has been loaded and -there is a depth of 30 feet or more of water around the wharf. At high water, the ship sails away on the ebbing tide as the river runs in the other direction. Tides are caused by the gravitational attraction of the moon and sun on the ocean. When both celestial bodies are pulling together the 'spring tide' results, which means a 50-foot variation from high to low. This occurs at new and full moon. A week later, when the sun and moon work in opposition, the difference is only 32 feet between high and low water. The bay of Fundy, having a funnel shape (150 miles wide at mouth from Yarmouth to Portland, while the upper estuary at Hantsport is only one mile wide), builds up a tidal influence from 10 feet at the mouth to an average of 45 feet at Hantsport.

Hydrometallurgical processes for treating copper sulfide concentrates have attracted considerable attention over thirty years and many processes have been developed. However there have been still problems in those processes because of difficulties of iron removal and high purity copper production with low operating cost. Although SX-EW is highly cost effective method, it is difficult to process the chalcopyrite. Sumitomo Metal Mining Co., Ltd. (SMM) conducted a review of hydrometallurgical copper concentrate processing and has successfully developed a novel process for the hydrometallurgical production of copper from copper concentrate. In this process, copper sulfide is leached by chlorine gas under atmospheric pressure. Most of hydro metallurgical processes can leach only some of chalcopyrite under atmospheric pressure then they need high pressure leaching facility like autoclave. In this process, copper in chalcopyrite can be leached completely by controlling oxidation reduction potential and chloride ion concentration. Cu(I) ion in leached liquor is separated from Fe(I!) ion by SX using TBP then pure copper powder is produced by electrowinning. Results in batch and continuous testworks and pilot plant tests at Niihama Research Laboratories are presented in this paper. Cu2007

MINING LEADS WAY TO PROSPERITY THE year 1937 will stand out in the history of mining and metal products in Canada as one of which we shall always be proud. The combined contribution of these industries played a large part in leading Canada back to prosperous conditions after years of stress and strain that left their mark upon business the world over. A review of general industry shows a marked improvement over recent years. The upward trend continued un-abated most of the year and not a few of the industries had all they could do to supply the demands. A fact that should be appreciated in a year of wheat failure over an extensive area of the Prairie Provinces is the shifting of the basis of Canadian prosperity from agriculture to that of mining and the use of metals. To the great demand for minerals of all kinds, our mines have well responded and many new high levels were reached. This reflects great credit upon the men who direct the activities of the Canadian Mining Industry. Possessed by a spirit which refused to accept defeat in 1931-1932, they began to increase the efficiency of their departments, explored all channels hitherto untried, and won through to a crowning success. Who among them dreamed that their country's extremity would be their Alex. McEachern opportunity, and that through their united efforts our young nation would be enabled to hold that high position she has attained in world affairs?

Competition between stress generation and relaxation mechanisms during the oxidation process has been observed. However, the nature of the intrinsic growth stress in thermally grown scales is not well understood. In this talk, we will propose a conceptual model to calculate the intrinsic growth stress based on the analysis of stress-driven diffusional process of oxygen ions along the oxide grain boundary. The calculated stress, which is considered to originate from the constrained lateral expansion of the oxide, is in agreement with a range of experimental observations.

"Radioactive minerals are found together with the more familiar ore minerals in veins, gossans, and pegmatites, Since they have a peculiar property, that of giving off penetrating radiation, the simplest means of field detection is by the use of some radiation detector.The two principal radioactive elements one may encounter are uranium and thorium. These may occur separately or together. At present there is very little demand for thorium and hence radioactive occurrences should be examined with some care to determine which element is present. To do this it may be necessary to have a chemical analysis made of samples from the occurrence. Uranium minerals that do not carry appreciable thorium have a conventional occurrence in quartz or carbonate veins. They are distinctive in appearance. Pitchblende, the principal ore, is hard, black, and very heavy. It weathers readily to soft, powdery minerals •brilliantly coloured orange, yellow, and sometimes green. It may be associated with familiar minerals such _as native silver, nickel-cobalt sulphides and arsenides, chalcopyrite, and hematite.It is the purpose of this paper to review very briefly the types of radiation detectors available .and to draw some general conclusions as to the types most suitable for particular applications.The highly penetrating gamma radiation is the most useful for detection of radioactive mineralization. The alpha rays have little or no penetration, and beta rays are stopped by thicknesses of a millimeter or so of material. We shall confine our remarks principally to those instruments intended to detect gamma radiation. These are of three types."

In recent years semi-solid processing of steel alloys has gain more attention among researchers. Production of high quality complex steel parts with higher mechanical properties is the final goal for all these researches. A thorough understanding of the flow behavior of the metal under investigation is the key for a successful process design. The material used in this research is M2 tool steel. The experiments were performed using a Searl-type concentric cylindrical rheometer which is specially designed for high temperature rheological measurements up to 1500 ºC. The rheological techniques were consisted of continuous cooling experiments and isothermal holding and also shear rate step change experiments for different solid fractions. Based on the rheological data a single phase thixotropic model has been derived and adopted to the measured data. The state of the microstructure has been applied through a structural parameter. The model fits well with the experiments.

Project managers aim to maximise the NPV of their projects, but don't always appreciate the relationship between mine throughput, project value and the discount rate being used to evaluate their projects. Rate of production or throughput is perhaps one of the most crucial decisions a project manager must make, but if this choice is made arbitrarily, much effort may be spent on a feasibility study that does not optimise project value. The timing of the study in relation to the stage of exploration is examined and simple techniques are presented that project engineers and managers can use to home in on a production rate which will give their project the greatest chance of success.
