Performance of industrial gas turbine engines in terms of power output, reduced cooling and efficiency have been continuously increasing in parallel with aero gas turbines due to the advances made in the development of new materials, protective thermal barrier coatings (TBCs) and the advanced diagnostics to monitor service induced problems such as hot corrosion, thermal and thermo-mechanical fatigue and other operational issues, Environmental attack (hot corrosion or high temperature oxidation) is a common degradation mode in the hot section of the gas turbine, Hot corrosion occurs when Na or K bearing compounds in the environment or in the fuel combine with other contaminants such as S and Pb or V to form corrosive sulphates or vanadates thus attacking the protective oxide on the turbine airfoil, These problems pose far more threat to new turbine engine materials such as directional solidified, single crystals and ceramic matrix composites (CMCs). The CMCs due to their increased temperature capability, when used in the combustion chamber, are likely to reduce the peak temperatures attained during combustion and therefore provide the benefits of reduced emissions of oxides of C and N, These issues will be reviewed critically and their impact will be assessed on gas turbine lives. With respect to alternate fuels, past experience has shown that utilization of residual oils and coal derived fuels in gas turbines have resulted in complex deposition and corrosion processes, In recent years biomass derived alternate fuels have been used either through a gasification cycle or through direct firing of the biomass derived liquid fuel with a view to reduce Green House Gases (GHGs) and improve the climatic conditions. In both cases, the resulting high temperature corrosion processes (in the presence of alkaloids in the fuel) are also very complex, leading to premature removal of hot section components, Technology solutions mitigating these fundamental problems will be reviewed and solutions presented.

B206 aluminum?copper alloy has a potential for wider use in the automotive industry due to its light weight and relatively superior mechanical properties as compared to aluminum-silicon alloys. The possibility of casting this alloy via Lost Foam Casting (LFC) has not been investigated in detail. Therefore, the effects of foam types (T170B standard untreated EPS and T175-brominated EPS), coating types (Styro Shield 5553 and Styro Shield 5554), copper level (4.5 wt % and 5.0 wt %) and titanium levels (0.5 wt % and 0.25 wt %) were related to fillability, microstructure and microporosity. The metal velocity in T175 EPS pattern was higher than that in T170B EPS pattern. For T175 EPS pattern, the total solidification time was 3% higher and the loss of temperature for decomposition of EPS was lower than those in the case of T170B EPS pattern. The grain size, porosity level and maximum pore size were quantified using Light Optical Microscopy (LOM) and image analysis. The casting with T175 EPS pattern showed larger grain size relative to that with T170B EPS pattern. The porosity level and the maximum pore size decreased significantly when the titanium level was increased from 0.05 wt % to 0.25 wt %.

"Since 1976, Cardinal River Coal s Ltd. has completed mining in eight pits. In each of these pits, at least one wall has failed, none by design, although not totally unexpected, yet there was no loss of production nor risk to personnel or equipment. Cardinal River Coals Ltd. has been successful in implementing a program to cope with failures and now feels justified in adopting more optimistic design parameters.The wall control program at Cardinal River Coals Ltd. is based on the premise that the walls are going to fail, monitoring is to confirm when. The program consists of monitoring slope movements and piezometric levels as well as structural mapping and visual inspections. In case of excessive movement, the frequency and intensity of the monitoring is increased. If a failure is impending, suitable remedial action is undertaken such as cutting down the crest, building up the toe, depressurization of the wall, artificial support, or a combination of the above. If remedial action is not possible, monitoring permits operations to continue up to near the time of failure.At the design stage, the emphasis is on identifying the potential failure mechanisms and the con sequences of failure. Once the potential failure mechanisms are identified, a monitoring system can usually be employed to give sufficient response time, and providing the consequence of failure is not severe and/ or remedial action can be taken to arrest the movements, then it is practical to mine pit slope s which have a higher probability of failure."

The prediction of machine utilization time and determining machine performance plays an important role in scheduling and planning tunnel excavation and data base created serve a major role in further applications. In this study, the construction methods of two twin tunnels situated between Basak Konutlari station and Istoc station are summarized. Geology in the study area is composed of fill and weak rock, respectively starting from the surface. The tunnels of 5.6 km in length were excavated with two different earth pressure balance machines (EPBM). Excavation diameters of the EPBMs were 6.564 m. The performance of the machines are analyzed and compared in order to accumulate data for further applications in similar ground conditions in Istanbul. The distance between two twin tunnels is 14 m from center to center and the EPBM in the one tube was almost about 100 m behind the other tube. Segmental lining with 1.4 m of length and 30 centimeters of thickness were used as final support. The overall performances of the two Lovat TBMs are found to be respectively as; the best daily advance rates 30.8 m/day and 30.8 m/day, the best weakly advance rates 115.0 m/day and 153.9 m/day, the best monthly advance rates 388.7 m/day and 400.5 m/day. Total waiting and maintenance times were 25.2 and 16.7 %, respectively.

"The Red Rose mine is in the Rocher Deboule mountains about 8 miles east of Skeena Crossing and a like distance south of the town of Hazelton; the most northerly settlement on the Prince Rupert line of the Canadian National railway and 177 miles northeast by rail from Prince Rupert. The mine workings are on the north side of Balsam or Red Rose creek; a tributary of Juniper creek that drains via Kitseguecla river into the Skeena near Skeena Crossing. A truck road 11 miles long extends from Skeen a Crossing (elevation 650 feet) to the Red Rose mill (elevation 4; 100 feet). The mine workings lie between 5; 600 and 6; 300 feet above sea-level. Mine and mill are connected by a 1-mile aerial tramway and a tractor trail.The Red Rose claims were staked about 1910 by prospectors attracted to the district by the construction and near completion of the railway between Prince Rupert and Jasper. For a number of years interest centred in prospecting a sheared zone exposed in a ravine between elevations of 5,425 and 5,825 feet. Several adits were driven and some high gold assays were obtained in vein quartz in the sheared zone, but this work did not develop sufficient ore and the property finally closed down. In the early twenties of this century tungsten minerals were discovered in the northern extension of the vein, but nothing was done to test this deposit. Finally, in 1940, spurred by the wartime demand for tungsten, the Consolidated Mining and Smelting Company of Canada drilled the tungsten-bearing vein, and although results were none too encouraging, underground work was begun in June 1941. The latter work disclosed substantial amounts of ore. A small mill, subsequently enlarged, began operation early in January 1942 and by the autumn of 1943 some 1,194,000 pounds of tungsten concentrate had been recovered. Mining ceased in November 1943 because of orders from the Metals Controller that no more shipments would be permitted."

IT IS ENOOURAGING indeed to note during the past year that, despite a slackening off in many markets and with numerous major difficulties and problems to solve, the mining industry of Nova Scotia was maintained at a very high level. The value of the Province's mineral production for 1957 amounted to approximately $65,000,000. This represents a drop of only 1.5 per cent from the figure of the previous year. Coal Atlantic Collieries, Ltd., opened a new coal mine during the year at Bras d'Or. This colliery is equipped with the most modern type of mechanical equipment available, with transport of the ?coal by a belt-conveyor system. Other mines in the Province continued to mechanize their operations by the addition of Diesel haulage locomotives and other mechanized mining equipment. New wash plants are in operation and .an additional one is planned.

"This paper aims at enriching a homogenization-based anisotropic damage model for hard rocks under complex loading. A new damage criterion is proposed to capture material strain softening. Within the framework of irreversible thermodynamics, we are particularly concerned with two strongly coupled dissipative mechanisms: frictional sliding and damage by microcracking, which usually take place at cracks within cohesive geomaterials under compression. Focusing on the representative elementary volume containing multiple crack families, the free enthalpy of the matrix-cracks system is obtained. Importantly, a back-stress term is involved in the local stress applied to microcracks. This back stress plays the hardening/softening role in the friction criterion which is formulated at local scale. Strain hardening owns to the accumulation of frictional shearing and dilatancy while strain softening is caused by crack growth. The multiscale damage model is used to simulate laboratory tests on the Westerly granite under true triaxial compressions. INTRODUCTIONWhen subjected to compressive loads, hard rocks present nonlinear mechanical behaviors and induced material anisotropies. In that process, two main dissipative mechanisms have been largely identified: damage by crack growth and frictional sliding along closed crack faces, which are usually strongly coupled to each other on crack scale. Theoretical investigations have shown that the damagefriction coupling analyses allow explaining a large number of experimental phenomena involved in brittle or quasi-brittle materials. Concerning constitutive modeling, the standard Eshelby’s solution-based homogenization procedure for heterogeneous materials was recently applied successfully to describing the mechanical and poromechanical behaviors of cracked frictional solids."

"Corrosion monitoring is commonly used in a variety of industries as a means of effective corrosion control programs to extend the life of the asset and ensure safe operation of the facilities. The majority of the monitoring tools have limitations and tradeoffs – e.g., sacrificing the longevity of the probe for higher measurement resolution. Linear polarization resistance (LPR) probes have the advantage of providing the operator with accurate, real-time corrosion rate data; however, the probes can only be deployed in conditions where the measured environment possesses certain minimal conductivity. In many instances, utilization of LPR probes in conditions with intermittent wetting (for example, conditions where the temperature fluctuates above and below the dew point) presents a challenge. To address this limitation, a special-design cooled corrosion probe has been developed, commercialized and integrated into the distributed control system in the plants. In addition to high-accuracy measurement of corrosion rates, the probe allows for monitoring of pitting corrosion. The most innovative feature of the probe is the cooling circuit, which brings the temperature of the sensors below the dew point, forcing precipitation of moisture and thus permitting corrosion measurements. Additionally, the probe was found to be well-suited for monitoring corrosion in crude distillation unit (CDU) overhead space, where condensation of hydrochloric acid may take place at relatively high temperatures, which would require relatively moderate amount of cooling to be imparted to the probe sensors. This paper presents laboratory-based data from a test simulating CDU refinery environment. A case study is presented to demonstrate how the cooling probe can be effectively used in the plants for corrosion monitoring.INTRODUCTIONConventional corrosion-monitoring techniques such as weight-loss coupons to assess corrosion damage are commonly used in plants1. However, the use of coupons is not only labor-intensive, but also does not deliver real-time corrosion data, thus effectively serving as a “backwards-looking” monitoring tool. "The object of the paper is to discuss the developments in Carbon-In-Pulp (C.I.P.) technology for gold recovery. The CIP process is comprised of four major operations:(a) adsorption of precious metals onto activated carbon;(b) elution (stripping) of precious metals from the loaded carbon;(c) electrowinning of the precious metals from the concentrated eluate;(d) regeneration of the eluted carbon before recycle to the adsorption process.A detailed review of the technological developments in each of the above operations is presented together with a brief theoretical background of the underlying processes. The advantages and disadvantages of the CIP process are discussed in comparison with conventional zinc precipitation. IntroductionThe carbon-in-pulp (CIP) process involves the use of activated carbon for treatment of pulps containing dissolved precious metals, and provide s an alternative to the conventional gold recover y processes using filtration or counter-current decantation in conjunction with the Merrill-Crowe zinc precipitation process. The commercial application o f the CIP process in gold processing technology is a fairly recent development and it is of growing importance around the world.The fact that activated carbon ha s the property of adsorbing precious metals from solution was first published in 1847. In the following years , a great deal of work was carried out to develop an over-all recover y process using carbon, but all attempts were uneconomical because the loaded carbon had to be smelted to recover the gold.It was not until 1950 that Zadra, at the United States Bureau of Mines Research Centre in Reno, Nevada, developed a technique for stripping the loaded carbon using sodium sulphite-sodium hydroxide mixtures and then recovering the gold from the stripping solution by electrolysis. However, this process was not effective for stripping silver and further testwork was carried out on alternative stripping techniques. In 1952, Zadra published a paper describing the use of a hot sodium hydroxide- sodium cyanide stripping technique, which was effective in stripping both gold and silver. This paper included a description and flowsheet for the CIP process which is essentially the same as we know it today. This technique was used in the first major CIP plant, constructed and commissioned in 1973 by Hornestake Gold Mining Company. Since then there have been numerous CIP plants built in the U.S A., South Africa and Australia."

"In this study, 2D numerical modeling of a room-and-pillar mine is conducted along with the calculation of all terms of the mechanical energy balance. Simulations of different geometrical and geomechanical configurations are performed in order to investigate the conditions that favor a high seismic energy release (instability) during the excavation (removal) of one single pillar. At first, classical stressstrain simulations enable us to estimate the elastic and quasi-static response of the mine. Then, owing to the implementation of new functions in the modeling code, the seismic energy released when the pillar is removed is calculated. The obtained values are found to be in agreement with those calculated analytically using a modified energy balance based on the works by Cook (1967) and Salamon (1984).It is shown that the mine’s proneness to release large amounts of seismic energy, after sudden removal of one single pillar, mainly depends on three parameters: the initial extraction ratio of the mine, the depth of the exploited seam and the Young’s modulus of the surrounding rock mass compared to that of the ore. Moreover, it is pointed out that the magnitude of the seismic energy can be greater than that of the stored elastic energy, meaning that the dynamic (seismic) transient stresses should not be neglected when compared to the quasi-static stresses, particularly when trying to prevent the risk of rockburst and collapse in underground mines."

The Cullaton Lake B-Zone gold mine was the first gold producer in the Kaminak Subprovince of the Canadian Shield . Located approximately 650 km north of Thompson. Manitoba, the mine produced 77,783 ounces of gold and 5,564 ounces of sil ver from 251 ,236 tons of ore during 1981-84 period. The depos it is a small , structurally controlled , stratabound orebody in an Archean iron formation. Most gold occurs in sulphide and silicate fac ies. Based on new ev idence, the depos it is interpreted to have fo rmed by remobilization of syngenetic low-grade gold mineralization in the iron fo rmation in a favoura ble fold structure. The concept and methods developed at the mine have been successfull y applied in the discovery of new deposits in the area. One of the concepts. which link Archean and Proterozoic mineralization. may have wider applications in the search fo r gold deposi ts elsewhere in Canada .

Emission of perfluorocarbon gases, CF4 and C2F6, produced during anode effects from aluminum electrolytic cells are a significant part of the total equivalent CO2 emitted by aluminum plants. With the current concerns about global warming, the reduction of these PFC gases is a key issue in reducing greenhouse gases for a smelter and achieving GHG emission agreement goals. This paper will present the approach taken by the Alcoa vertical-stud Soderberg plant in Baie-Comeau to reduce GHG emissions generated during anode effects and close emission gaps with other Alcoa Soderberg plants. The approach has been to adapt the existing technology in place at the Baie-Comeau Soderberg plant. PFC emissions were lowered by reducing both the anode effect duration and frequency through different methods. Examples of change include: implementing skimming practices and wider side crust break area for better alumina dissolution in bath, increasing the ratio between reacted and pure alumina, reducing the time to declare anode effects in the potrooms, implementing best work practices and finally educating the workforce on the importance of reducing PFC emissions.

"Paymaster Consolidated Mines, Limited, owns several groups of claims in various parts of the Porcupine district. The area in which mining has been carried on includes parts of lots 5, 6, and 7, con. 1, Tisdale township, and twelve adjoining claims in Deloro township to the south. Highway No. 67A between South Porcupine and Timmins crosses the property.The discovery of the Dome mine in 1909 caused a rush of prospectors to the district and in a few weeks practically all territory adjacent to the Dome was staked. At that time work was started on the West Dome, West Dome Lake, Apex, and Standard properties. These were consolidated in 1930 to form the present Company. Gold was produced from the West Dome Lake from 1915 to 1930, and from the Standard-Paymaster from 1922 to 1928. The total production of the previous and present companies from 1915 to November 30, 1946, has been 487,170 oz. gold and 149,342 oz. silver from 2,337,554 tons of ore."

Presently,Many long-wall fully-mechanized faces in shallow depth coal seams are below room and pillar goaf in Shendong mining area. When the working face is advanced out of concentrated coal pillar in upper room and pillar goaf, strong strata behaviors often cause support crushing accident. Aiming at a support crushing accident which happened in Shigetai coal mine of Shenhua group in Shendong mining area, this paper analyses the stress transfer process while mining out of concentrated coal pillar by numerical simulation software FLAC3D. According to the feature, simplifying the roof of upper room and pillar goaf as supporting-beam structure explains mechanism of large area collapse in room and pillar goaf roof. Based on the feature of supporting-beam structure, deep-hole blasting concentrated coal pillar technology is proposed to control the strong strata behaviors in Shigetai coal mine. The blasting control effect is confirmed through characteristics of strata behaviors, growth circumstance of ground crack and multi-point extensometer monitoring results. By using control technology, Shigetai coal mine has been successfully avoided support crushing accident.

"Mineral deposits and prospects of the Pan African Saldanian orogenic belt in the southwestern Cape Province South Africa, are reviewed. Despite the entire absence of operating base or precious metal mines in the area, this study has established at least four metal associations that offer enticing exploration potential.The poly-phase deformed, low-grade metamorphosed volcano-sedimentary Malmesbury Group constitutes a complex, poorly understood supracrustal sequence that has been loosely subdivided into the Tygerberg, Swartland and Boland tectono-stratigraphic terranes by northwesterly trending fault zones. Syn- and post-tectonic granitoids of the Cape Granite Suite selectively intruded these terranes. Early S-types preferred the Tygerberg terrane whereas the later I-types dominate the remaining areas. Anorogenic A-type granites, however, occur in all three domains. Known metallization is directly or indirectly related to the intrusives, yet syngenetic deposits are conspicuously absent from the supracrustals. Four metal associations have been identified.• Cassiterite-wolframite (± Au, Cu, Mo, Fe-sulfides) in quartz and quartz/aplite veins hosted by tourmalinized and locally greissenized S-type granite. Similar exo-granitic veins occur in proximal metamorphites.• Juxtaposed disseminated, stockwork, breccia and vein style Cu-Mo-Fe-(Au)-sulfide mineralization hosted by mafic to intermediate intrusives of high K calc-alkaline, I-type affinity. • Cu-Mo-Au-sulfides hosted by hydraulic breccia pipes, stocks and veins occurring in anorogenic A-type alkali feldspar granites and amphibole quartz syenites.• Scheelite with minor Cu-Mo-sulfides and Au-associated with endo- and exo-skarns spatially related to I-type monzogranite, granite and alkali feldspar granite.The first three associations occur along the Yzerfontein-Helderberg-Zone, a 180 km lineament in the Tygerberg terrane, a zone exploited by syn-, late- and post-tectonic intrusives and their related mineralization. The fourth association is typical of the Boland terrane. The spatial and temporal relationships between the various metal associations is interpreted as the result of sequential intrusion of relative early high level S-type, followed by intermediate level I-type and finally anorogenic A-type granitoids during the evolution of a contracting continental margin arc and its irmer arc. This plate tectonic setting suggests subduction in an easterly direction underneath the Kalahari craton. The spatial configuration of the various terranes at the present erosional levels is the result of rifting and significant differential vertical displacement following cessation of subduction, a terminal tectonic event possibly synchronous with intrusion of the A-type granitoids.Near surface preserved roof zones and cupolas of both S- and I-type granitoids in the Tygerberg and Boland terranes, respectively, render these areas extremely prospective for Sn, W, Mo and Au mineralization. The presence of intermediate to mafic volcanics, a diversity of calcareous lithotypes and favorable plate tectonic setting of the Malmesbury Group suggest potential for the thus far elusive VMS, MVT and Sedex base metal and minor precious metal deposits."

Lors de la mise en usage de s premières pelles à la va peur, celles-ci étaient généralement entretenues par I ‘équipe de quatre hommes qui était responsable de son opération. Pour les travaux plus compliqués ils utilisaient les services de machinistes qui eux savaient comment réparer Ie moteur à vapeur et couler des coussinets de ""babbit"". Les premières pelles diesel étaient entretenues de la même façon mais pour les réparations au moteur, on devait recourir au représentant du manufacturier qui était Ie seul à avoir les compétences nécessaires.Ce n'est vraiment qu ‘après la deuxième guerre mondiale que I ‘usage de l'équipement mobile s'est répandu dans les mines à ciel ouvert pour débuter les extractions selon les méthodes que I'on connaît aujourd'hui.L'entretien de l'équipement minier de façon organisée à débute avec I ‘usage de ces machines dans nos mines. Ces machines étaient un peu primitives, petites et pas très dispendieuses a I'achat. Même si la disponibilité était basse, elles fournissaient quand même un rendement qui en ces temps était acceptable. L’organisation de I ‘entretien de cet équipèrent était assez primitif et n'occupait qu'une place secondaire aux yeux de la direction de la mine."

The rock mechanics literature has documented the challenges, failures and successes of tunneling through weak rocks. Cases usually deal with low RMR rock masses or high stresses in a fractured zone. With the combination of 5MPa water pressure, 14 RMR ground with clay infillings and ground freeze walls, the case of the 510-8225N development drift at McArthur River is certainly much more challenging, especially when high grade uranium production is at stake. The article explains the excavation and the ground control techniques that were used to overcome the challenges of development at the Unconformity in the Athabasca Basin.

"The paper/presentation will review the evolution of diesel technology from older diesel engines (1990 vintage) through to the latest technology as a result of the ever changing emissions regulations. It will encompass the EPA Tier levels as well as the latest Euro Stage V emissions. The next step with technology will be to address the CO2 emissions, which translates to improving fuel efficiencies of the product as well as other technologies like battery electric, hybrid and fuel cells. As technology progresses it also becomes important to improve connective diagnostic systems to support maintenance practices and improve efficiencies. What will also be presented will be the key emissions changes to the different gaseous and particle mass elements as the products have transitioned from the EPA Tier 3 through to Tier 4 Final regulations. Offering a range of different technologies to the underground mining market matters as not all pieces of equipment will perform optimally due to its duty cycle and application. INTRODUCTION Rudolf Diesel built his first well-known prototype of the high-compression engine in 1897. Since that time, the diesel engine has evolved into one of the world’s most capable and reliable forms of power generation. Diesel engines can be found in a wide variety of vehicles and equipment, powering everything from agriculture and construction equipment to power generators and marine vessels. In the early days the emissions from diesels was very poor and extensive work has been accomplished over the decades to make the product more environmentally friendly. This is more important in underground mining where the space is limited and ventilation is expensive and challenging. DISCUSSION The key driver of the development of diesel technology is the legislation globally around engine emissions. The emission level requirements over the years has forced diesel engine manufacturers to build a deep technical understanding of the system and how to innovate and optimize key elements of the engine. Cummins expertise has been built over the years as the diesel engine has evolved from a relatively simple mechanical engine to an electronic system with advanced air handling, fuel system, after treatment, and controls. Cummins has also continued to expand into systems beyond diesel, including natural gas. Many new components have been added to diesel engines to reduce emissions while improving fuel efficiency and reliability and, at the same time, reduce the total cost of ownership to the customer."

ABSTRACT: In most cases, a refractory repair involves dealing with used refractory linings above shoulder height, defining these as overhead refractories. This paper details a method of personnel protection involving a low-pressure inflatable balloon system, installed to prevent the dislodgement and freefall of in-situ refractories. This system has been successfully applied to numerous types of vessels in the process industries in the last three to four years. This paper, prepared for the CIM Conference of Metallurgists held in Vancouver, British Columbia in October 2010, outlines details of the system and gives examples of successful applications.

"The Red Rose Mine is in the Rocher Deboule Range, 8 miles south of Hazelton. The mill camp (elevation 4,000 feet) is on Red Rose Creek, 11 miles by road from Skeena Crossing. The mine camp is one mile northeast and 1,600 feet above the mill camp on a spur of Red Rose Peak.The Red Rose mine was described in the Jubilee Volume, Structural Geology of Canadian Ore Deposits (Davis, pp. 129-131), but regional geology and mine development have progressed to a stage at which a more complete description is possible.The property was first located in 1912, and for the next 7 years was prospected actively for gold and copper on the southern extension of the Red Rose shear. Scheelite was first discovered in the vein in the northern part of the shear in 1923. The Consolidated Mining and Smelting Company of Canada, Limited optioned the property in 1939, and after a drilling program in 1940 the present mine development was initiated in the vein in the northern part of the shear. A 75-ton-per-day mill started operating early in 1942 and continued until 1943. The property was inactive until 195 l, when Western Tungsten Copper Mines Limited leased the property from The Consolidated Mining and Smelting Company of Canada, Limited. A mill, which later was enlarged to 140 tons per day, started operations at the end of 1951. The mine and mill were closed in December, 1954.The mine has twelve levels and sub1evels, and most of the workings are in the plane of the vein (see Figure 2a). The level interval is not constant, but between the lower four levels is 87 feet (100 feet in the plane of the vein). Access is provided by four adits; the 800 (elevation 5,659 feet), 600 (5,920 feet), 300 (6, 133 feet) and 200 levels (6,237 feet). The 600 level is the main haulage, and from it the ore is transported to the mill by aerial tram. From this level an inclined shaft extends in the vein to the lowest level (I, 100)."
