Ventilation Air Methane (VAM) is a high volume low concentration methane source. The capture or use of methane from VAM is challenging, which results in the routine discharge of methane into the atmosphere. Mitigating VAM has the benefits of providing an energy source and reducing the atmospheric Greenhouse Gas (GHG) burden. The GHG radiative forcing effect of methane is 17?23 times as potent as carbon dioxide on a 100-year time horizon. Thus, any reduction in atmospheric methane would be beneficial. The calorific value of methane is 55.5 MJ/Kg; therefore, a 100 m3/s flow with VAM concentrations from 0.1?1% can provide 3.8?38 MW of exploitable power. Strategies to mitigate VAM such as: Thermal Flow Reverse Reactors (TFRR), Catalytic Flow Reverse Reactors (CFRR), Lean Burn and Catalytic Gas Turbines, Biothermica Vamox®, Megtec VOCSIDIZER©, and Vamcat? are briefly reviewed. The review of VAM mitigation technologies reveals disadvantages such as the need to maintain a minimum internal heat capable of oxidizing the methane. This requirement uses all of the available methane up to the point of reaction sustainability and up to half at the highest methane concentration in VAM. Some systems may introduce a pressure drop to the ventilation system, which would impinge on the existing ventilation system design. These impediments necessitate the development of a more amenable technology. In the proposed system, gas turbines (GT), coupled to a combustion chamber with an external fuel supply, assist the combustion of the VAM. The combustion-chamber coupled system provides electricity, while the heat contained in the GT exhaust gases increases the temperature of the VAM, encouraging the development of a flame inside a combustion chamber. The flow from the combustion chamber streams through a primary air/fluid heat exchanger capable of producing steam of a high enough quality to generate electricity using conventional steam turbines. The residual heat after primary extraction, directed through other equipment, provides additional heat based products such as industrial scale dry air, chilling by an absorption chiller or hot water. The overall design of the system is scalable for low to high VAM flows or variations in concentrations and is capable of providing the company or community with heating, chilling, hot water, electricity or motive force as needed by the particular site or community. The Multi-generation system uses heat from three sources to provide clean efficient energy while mitigating the atmospheric emissions of methane. These sources are heat from the GT, often considered waste heat, heat from fuel injected into the igniters and heat from the VAM. The opportunity to collect carbon credits may improve the economics. In order to design a system with this capacity, a detailed analysis of the combustion characteristics of three separate flows is required. VAM is the main airflow, having the highest volumetric effect, while the GT exhaust and the additional fuel added to the hot exhaust flow of the gas turbine are lower flows, but have a higher velocity and temperature. The aim of the modeling undertaken in this work is to establish the combustion dynamics, degree of pre-heating required and the geometry essential to the design of combustion based VAM mitigation multi-generation systems.

WATER power, until developed, produces nothing, but when harnessed it continues to produce, it might be said, indefinitely. Hence the importance of developing all feasible water powers. British Columbia, like the western states of America, is subject to variable meteorological conditions which cause most streams to be erratic in their flow. The wet season, usually commencing in October and continuing to March or April, together with the melting of the snows during the early summer, produces a heavy run-off which diminishes considerably during the later s1.1,mmer months, with the result that storage is essential on practically every stream in order to regulate the flow to obtain a discharge which will meet the requirements of the load of the markets the power is to serve. Storage sites of sufficient capacity to equate the flows are not always present and it follows that, where such a deficiency exists, the difference must usually be met by burning fuel in steam plants. Fortunately, there are within the Province deposits of high-grade coal, suitable for the operation of such auxiliary steam plants. One of the strongest reasons for the development of water powers is the conservation of fuel. All use of coal or oil depletes resources that can never be renewed. Every water power developed means a saving in fuel and, even if at first it does not possess an over-powering financial advantage, it must become of ever increasing value as fuel resources become depleted. However, sight must not be lost of the inter-relation which should exist between the two methods of generating electrical energy, as each makes an admirable supplement to the? other with respect to suitability for carrying different types of load. In general, it can be said that the fixed charges of a water power development are usually high in relation to the operation costs, while those of fuel power plants are usually the reverse, so it is sometimes possible to combine the two methods of generation for the more efficient production of energy.

Abstract - Most of the gold in the Late Archean Witwatersrand Basin is of detrital origin but, in its present form, it is metamorphosed. The only relict detrital features preserved are the morpho­logical characteristics of some placer gold particles. Regional burial metamorphism in the shallower and deeper levels of the Witwatersrand Supergroup reached temperatures around 300°C and 350°C at pressures between 2 kbar and 3 kbar, respectively , estimated from phase relations, chlorite-chloritoid exchange thermometry and chlorite thermometry . Metamorphism of the gold involved compositional homogenization of individual gold particles and partial recrystallization. Various infiltration events caused the partial mobilization of the gold at slightly lower temperatures, between 240°C and 300°C. These infiltrations can be related to crustal extension during the deposition of massive carbonate sequences of the Transvaal Supergroup (around 2.5 Ga), and later to the emplacement of the Bushveld Complex, and to the Vredefort event around 2.0 Ga ago. The mobility of the gold was dependent on the sulfur fugacity prevailing in a particular horizon which, in turn, was deter­ mined by the amount of pyrite (and other sulfides) present in that horizon. With the sulfur fugacity being controlled by stratigraphy, low fluid:rock ratios in a pyrite-rich horizon were most conducive for the mobilization of the gold. Thus, long-range gold mobilization in the Witwatersrand Basin can be expected to be the exception rather than the rule.

"The Anomaly A area of the Clarence Stream gold deposits in southwestern New Brunswick contains mineralized structures that bear geometrical relationships to regional folding events. The four mineralized zones of Anomaly A (AD, MW, 93, and Murphy) are hosted by turbiditic graywacke, quartzose wacke, siltstone, and argillite sequences of the Kendall Mountain Formation. A regional scale structural analysis reflects at least four deformational events, three of which appear to control the folded geometry of Anomaly A (D2, D3, and D4). F2 and F3 folds are coaxial and are refolded into a dome and basin geometry by F4 folds. The mineralized zones are subparallel to axial surfaces of F2 folds. Structural analysis of a mineralized zone exposed at surface indicates that gold mineralization is hosted by a quartz-vein system that comprises veins generated during both D2 and D3. Threedimensional representations of Anomaly A created using drill-core data and ®GoCAD suggest that the quartz-vein system was emplaced in fault structures during D2 as well as within brecciated dilation zones during D3. Three of the four zones that make up Anomaly A have F2 hinge surfaces that can be linked through a geometry compatible with the style of F3 and F4 folds. The apparent continuity of these three zones indicates the potential for kilometer-scale mineralized structures at Anomaly A. Researchers at the Pittsburgh Research Laboratory (PRL) of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) work to reduce respirable dust exposures in mining operations. One focus of this research is silica dust control for surface and underground operations in the metal/nonmetal mining industry. PRL researchers analyze dust sampling results from the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) to identify high-risk occupations to guide research efforts. Research is then conducted in an effort to improve existing technologies and/or develop new controls for reducing worker exposure to airborne silica dust. During the last few years, PRL researchers have conducted research related to the following goals: improving protection provided by enclosed cabs on mobile surface mining equipment, reducing dust generation from surface drills, reducing dust levels in iron ore operations, and developing a new method to clean dust from workers? soiled clothes. A description of each of these controls and subsequent dust reductions quantified through site surveys will be provided.

As part of the application for this expansion, a comprehensive closure plan had to be developed and filed.Closure planning includes a systematic evaluation of the area to be developed, the development activities planned, the goals and objectives of the corporation in re-establishing landforms and ecosystems at the same time as running an effective operation. As early as is practical during the mine development, surface contouring is completed, soil is reconstructed, and vegetation, surface drainage and wetlands are re-established. Once active reclamation is complete and vegetation has been re-established, Suncor monitors maturation of landscapes and ecosystems to provide the submission basis for reclamation certification"

Metal clusters exhibit unique size-dependent physical and chemical properties that differ from those of bulk materials or large particles. Here we discuss recent theoretical investigations of the catalytic properties of free and MgO-supported gold clusters. The catalytic activity of gold clusters depends sensitively on the environment, charge state, and chemical composition of the catalyst. Relativistic bonding effects stabilize large planar structures for gas-phase gold clusters, and non-compact ?quasiplanar? structures are present as important isomers also for surface-supported clusters. The hybridization of the atomic 5d and 6s states is significantly enhanced by the relativistic effects, and large spatial variations in the nature of the local electronic structure make the low-coordinated gold atoms preferable adsorption sites for oxygen molecules. The adsorbed oxygen molecules are activated to superoxo- and peroxo-states via charge-transfer from gold, and Eley-Rideal and Langmuir-Hinshelwood reactions with CO proceed via low-barrier formation of intermediates, which do not require O-O dissociation as precursors. This facilitates the low-temperature (below 300 K) activity of gold nanocatalysts in CO oxidation. Other gold nanostructures, such as mono-atomic gold nanowires, may also become important prototype systems in chemical sensing and nanocatalysis; here we show that they are active promoters of hydrogen dissociation.

"Many ores are upgraded to produce auriferous sulphide concentrates (principally pyrite) which are not amenable to direct cyanidation. Often these refractory gold-bearing concentrates contain undesirable elements such as arsenic, antimony, etc., which present environmental and/or processing problems. The pretreatment techniques most often considered for processing these concentrates prior to cyanidation include roasting, pressure oxidation, chemical oxidation, pre-aeration, and recently, bacterial oxidation. In this paper, the technical performance and economics of bacterial pre-oxidation vs the classical roasting approach for treating a specific auriferous pyrite concentrate are compared. The results provide flow sheets, preliminary operating and capital cost estimates, and rates of return for the two processes and demonstrate the potential advantages of bacterial pre-oxidation. IntroductionThe increased attention that gold has received in the last ten years has prompted mining companies to look for lower grade orebodies. Many of these low-grade ores do not respond well to conventional direct cyanidation recovery techniques. As free-milling ores decline, gold is sought in refractory environments which, ultimately, drive up the treatment costs.There are a number of reasons for a gold ore to be termed refractory, most of which can be identified by thorough mineralogical examination. The mineralogical occurrence of gold can, to a great extent, impact the method by which the ore is treated and, consequently, the capital and operating costs. Gold in a refractory ore can often occur as discrete particles locked in a host of silicate or carbonate gangue, or associated with sulphides or sulphosalts. Depending on its particle size, gold can be liberated and recovered by mechanical size reduction such as regrinding. This approach is most effective for gold in the 10 - 50 micron range. Gold can also be associated with clay, iron hydroxides, or other minerals which tend to coat the gold surface and inhibit the penetration of the cyanide solution, resulting in poor plant recovery. Because of their resistance to cyanide dissolution, gold tellurides and other refractory gold minerals are also responsible for losses to the tailings. For these reasons, it is paramount that the mineralogical occurrence of the gold be thoroughly and accurately determined before selecting a final process flowsheet."

The Downhole Seismic Imaging consortium was initiated by the Geological Survey of Canada and three Canadian mining companies to assess the usefulness of borehole seismic techniques for the exploration of massive sulphide deposits within areas of steeply dipping stratigraphy. Field tests were conducted over two sub-economic massive sulphide deposits located in Norman West, Ontario, and Halfmile Lake, New Brunswick, using various shot configurations and a three-component borehole receiver array. The Norman West deposit, or structures associated with the deposit, produce detectable seismic reflections as far away as 1500 m. However, these reflections are difficult to distinguish from fault reflections and lithological contacts near the base of the Sudbury Igneous Complex. At Halfmile Lake, the rock properties are favourable for direct orebody detection. The Halfmile Lake deposit has a clear but relatively complex seismic signature on the downhole data, showing not only P-wave reflections, but also strong reflected S-waves and modeconverted waves. Such prominent S-waves and converted waves have not been recognized previously in borehole or surface seismic data acquired over massive sulphide deposits. These waves add complexity to the interpretation but provide additional imaging capabilities. Reflected S-waves and converted waves should be considered when designing seismic surveys for mineral exploration.

This paper will overview the milling, autoclaving, and heap leaching facilities which are part of the $400-million Betze development plan. Gold production at the Mine has increased from 40,000 ounces per annum in 1987 to more than 500,000 ounces in 1991. And in 1992 Goldstrike will be the single largest North American gold mine when it produces 1,000,000 ounces.1. "PID loops – also known as base layers or regulatory controls – form the foundation of any plant’s control layer and it is generally accepted that PID loop health has a direct impact on the plant’s bottom line. Keeping these thousands of control loops in good health has a direct impact on the plant’s bottom line: it reduces variability, improves quality and throughput, and decreases energy costs and raw material usage. This has been well proven and documented in many articles. In the last ten years, technology has evolved: control engineers can now keep track of control loop performance and link it to the root causes of variability. However, they lack industry-wide best practices and criteria for determining what can be considered as excellent, good, fair, or poor performance. To ensure that PID control loops continue to perform well and meet their objectives, control engineers need a combination of (a) an appropriate monitoring technology and (b) best practices for doing the maintenance of base layer controls.Most plants have limited resources and operate with an increasing number of constraints; therefore, using the right tools and including reports in daily workflow is key for success. This paper suggests roles and responsibilities of key players needed to work toward control performance best practices and discuss organisational changes to succeed.INTRODUCTIONAlthough PID controllers are reliable workhorses in the process industry, they are often underrated. Since the 1980’s, computer control has evolved and the control algorithms used by control engineers have become increasingly complex. However, PID controllers still handle over 90% of the control loops in operating plants. Table 1 shows the savings that can be realized by achieving best-practice in several different process control categories (Brisk, 2004). The savings are expressed as a percentage of production costs."

Essentially the purpose of this piloting was to demonstrate, on a semi-industrial scale, the process of purification of marine sands from Les Iles-de-la-Madeleine; that had been developed by CRM Process Development Service. This purification is necessary to produce silica suitable for the glass sand and the foundry sand markets.Introduction«Les Silices du Golfe Inc.» is a company who intends to dredge marine sands around the «Les Iles-de-la-Madeleine» coasts. The material will be transported to Gaspesia where electricity, water supply, and a convenient site is available to treat it. A high purity silica intended for glass sand and foundry sand markets will be produced. The objectives of this purification process are to remove organics, calcium, feldspars and iron.Material ReceivedCRM received 50 tons of sand with Si02 varying between 80,6 and 99,3 % (see Figure.1). The highest variations in impurities were the calcium and lost on ignition. We notice direct relation between% SiO2, % CaO and % L.O.I. as you can see on the following Figures 2, 3 and 4."

"Gold is present in different forms and associations in different ores. Flotation is used to recover gold and minerals associated with gold, but the applicability and type of flotation vary. The purpose of flotation in a gold recovery plant is largely dependent on the mineralogical association of the gold, and environmental and economic considerations. In this paper, the role of flotation in the recovery of gold is reviewed. The paper will describe examples of gold recovery by flotation including flotation of native gold, gold associated with sulphides including specifically copper sulphides, gold associated with tellurides, gold ores containing carbonaceous material and gold contained in tailings.INTRODUCTIONFlotation is widely used in the recovery of gold. However, the objectives and the mode of application are quite variable dependent on the type of ore, the gold association(s), other metal values, marketing considerations and environmental requirements. In this paper, a range of different applications of flotation incorporated in the recovery of gold are discussed. The reasons for each particular application are outlined and metallurgical results are presented.The mineralogy of the ore and the gold associations are fundamental influences on gold recovery. The use of flotation to concentrate gold is dictated by the mineralogy of the ore and gold. The fundamental factors are mineral/gold size, liberation size, association of the gold and type of gangue minerals or other valuable minerals. Gold can exhibit a range of sizes in a host from relatively large size (+50 µ) to refractory size (1 µ and sub-micron size). Similarly, the gold can occur in a number of phases in the same host. For example, the gold was present as petzite (AgAu telluride), calaverite (AuTe2) and native gold in a gold telluride ore and each of these minerals was associated with the pyrite host.Understanding the gold mineralogy and association is important in establishing the correct process route. The gold mineralogy is established by good mineralogy, use of diagnostic tools such as diagnostic leaching and assay by size fraction analyses and basic metallurgical testwork."

"Orway Mineral Consultants Ltd (OMC) as a consultancy has specialized in comminution circuit design for over 30 years. The OMC Power Model is OMC’s in-house software for specific grinding energy power-based circuit calculations. The model uses ore hardness parameters from testwork, circuit configuration, equipment geometry and operating conditions as inputs. The model combines proprietary and published power models to predict the total specific energy and the specific energy for each of the components of the comminution circuit. This makes the software a valuable tool for the design and validation of JKSimMet modelling or actual plant performance. Proprietary calculations have been developed and reconciled with over 100 plant benchmark projects encompassing a variety of comminution circuit configurations.This paper describes the OMC approach for determining power requirements for the design of grinding circuits. The accuracy of the OMC Power Model software is confirmed through plant survey benchmark performance and comparisons are made with other power modelling techniques. Practical examples are presented, showing applications for single stage SAG (SS-SAG), SAB and SABC circuit configurations.IntroductionConventional low throughput grinding options, consisting of multi-stage crushing followed by rod and ball mills, have almost become obsolete in the move to higher milling rates required to process lower metal grades. Grinding circuits with fully autogenous (AG) or semi-autogenous (SAG) mills, often combined with ball mills are now the standard to meet the high capacity requirement for processing ores with lower metal grades. Simulation software and power-based equation methodologies have been established for designing AG/SAG based grinding circuits and predicting their energy requirements.Presently, power-based equations remain the principal method for designers to size mills and estimate the power requirement for comminution circuits. The technique is simple and it relies on the design to specify a feed and product size plus a hardness index to produce a specific energy value (kWh/t). The desired throughput of the mill is multiplied by the specific energy to give the mill power requirement, which is used in turn to size a mill for dimensions, internal geometry and loading conditions to match the power draw."

Abosso Goldfields Limited has been optimizing the comminution circuit at the Damang Mine Operation for the treatment of 100% primary ore. The optimization process started at a base rate of 343 tph when treating primary crushed primary ore, and was increased to above 600 tph with partially crushed primary ore. Abosso Goldfields engaged Orway Mineral Consultants (OMC) to assist with the optimization process in 2009 and the two companies have been working together since, to further refine the process. Continuous improvement was achieved through crushing circuit modifications, changes in operating processes and grinding control system utilization. This paper discusses the improvements developed for the increase in milling capacity and improvements in final product size.

"The risk management objective of the AMIRA Code of Practice for Metal Accounting has seldom been systematically investigated in the literature up to the authors’ knowledge. Risk is defined in the Australian Standard on Risk Management (AS/NZS 4360:2004), as “the chance of something happening that will have an impact on objectives”. The simplified economic analysis performed in this paper has lead to define “something happening” as measurement non-representativity and “impact on objectives” as NSR loss from the optimal NSR. This has pinpointed a missing link being the establishment of a relation between NSR in flotation plants and measurement representativity. The proposed framework, referred to as the total cost of representativity, answers the previously unanswered question of how much accuracy/reproducibility is fit for purpose in a given flotation plant. Authors readily acknowledge that it is way easier to assess the cost of accuracy/reproducibility than the cost of inaccuracy/irreproducibility. However, this exercise not only answers previously unanswered questions but also establishes an essential link with operational excellence. Separations, which form along stratigraphic boundaries in the roofs of potash mines, pose a serious safety concern. If these separations go undetected they can lead to falls of ground. The current method of identifying the location and extent of these separations is through manual scaling (sounding) using an aluminium rod. The potash mining companies would like to have a tool, which could quickly and reliably detect these separations and distinguish between them and clay seams. This paper presents the results of field trials undertaken at various potash mines in Saskatchewan belonging to the member companies of the Saskatchewan Potash Producers Association. A ground penetrating radar instrument from RST called SUSI (stepped frequency, ultra-wideband, synthetic aperture radar instrument) was used. SUSI has the ability of working over various frequency bandwidths. Four mines were chosen for these field trials, covering the different geological characteristics encountered in the Saskatchewan potash mines: Potash Corporation of Saskatchewan?s (PCS) Allan and Lanigan Divisions, Agrium?s Vanscoy Potash Operations and IMC Potash?s K2 Mine. These field trials indicated that stepped frequency ground penetrating radar technology could be ?tuned? to identify both separations and clay stratigraphy in the softrock, potash mine environment, based on the different spectral responses of the features.

"The Collahuasi copper mine, located at an altitude of 4300 meters above sea level in northern Chile, commenced operations late in 1998. The mine is currently the 4‘h largest copper producer in the world and comprises an open pit, a 60,000 tpd sulphide concentrator, a 15,000 tpd oxide heap leach and SWEW plant and a 200 km concentrate pipeline to a port facility.Constructing, commissioning and operating a mine at high altitude presents unique challenges in terms of the performance of both equipment and people. It is important that these be recognized and carefully considered during the feasibility study and the detailed design stages and the success of the Collahuasi project is largely due to this. The plant design incorporates a number of features aimed at mitigating the problems of altitude and the construction methodology also took into account the particular site conditions.This paper discusses the Collahuasi project team’s approach to planning for the remote location and also some of the problems experienced during construction, commissioning and operation.INTRODUCTIONThe Collahuasi mine is located in northern Chile, some 250 km to the south-east of the port of Iquique and 15 km from the Bolivian border. The mine facilities lie between 3800-4300 m above sea level on the Altiplano, the central plateau of the Andes mountains, and cover a total of approximately 95,000 hectares. Although the area is arid, it experiences an average of 150 mm of precipitation annually and weather conditions can be extreme. Temperatures during the day range between -3 to +11 º C and are generally below 0ºC at night, sometimes as low as -20°C. High energy winds are common and humidity is low. Much of the precipitation occurs during the winter as snow but there also occurs a period during the Chilean summer known as the “Invierno Boliviano’’ (or Bolivian Winter) which is characterized by severe electrical storms and rain."

"The effect of grinding media performance on milling and operational behaviour was demonstrated under different selected milling conditions of calcium carbonate. A variety of grinding media material and bead sizes, along with 2 different stirrer tip speeds, were used in the grinding process to generate a particle size reduction of the calcium carbonate (CaCO3). To determine the optimum milling parameters the collected test data was used to calculate and evaluate specific energy as well as stress intensity under different milling conditions.INTRODUCTIONAs a result of increasing energy costs and raw material prices it is important to look at the efficiency of the manufacturing process. Wet grinding and ultrafine wet grinding in stirred media mills are now a possible cost-effective production step for the processing of industrial minerals and precious metals. The generation of smaller particle sizes (down to micrometer scale) can be advantageous for further production steps – i.e. better liberation of precious metals or improved industrial mineral qualities.In the following, the wet grinding process is investigated under different milling conditions of calcium carbonate. Different grinding media materials varying in specific weight, bead size and stirrer tip speeds are used to determine optimal energy consumption for the milling process.DESCRIPTION OF TEST CONDITIONS AND PARAMETERSMill ParametersTests were performed in a Drais Laboratory Perl Mill PML H/V with an installed electrical motor power of 3 kW. The mill chamber is silicon carbide where as the stirrer and discs are made of yttria stabilised zirconia. The mill working volume is 0.9 l. A screen cartridge with a screen size of 0.2 mm is used to separate the beads and slurry at the outlet of the mill. All tests were performed with a grinding media filling grade of 80% (Mill working volume). The stirrer tip speed was set at 6 m/s and 10 m/s."
