"An antimony-bearing gold ore was studied in a cyanide slurry containing 7 -20 ppm dissolved oxygen. 1 g/L NaCN at pH 9.5 and 48 hours retention time is required to extract 94 % of the gold from the 90 % minus 200 mesh ore by conventional cyanidation at a 7 ppm O2. As oxygen concentration was increased to 20 ppm, the conditions required to extract the same amount of gold were: 0.25 g/L NaCN, 16 hours retention time and 80% minus 200 mesh. Compared to conventional cyanidation, oxygen-enriched leaching was shown to reduce retention time by three times and cyanide consumption by four times. The kinetics of gold dissolution related to the dissolved oxygen concentration in slurry was expressed by following equation:XAu = 100 * (Kt + I0) / (1 + Kt + I0)where XAu is the percentage gold extraction; t is the retention time; K and Io are the slope and the intercept of the plot of XAu I (100 -XAu) vs. t respectively. The values of Kand Io depend upon the concentrations of cyanide and oxygen, the fineness of grind and the origin of ore sample etc.. A preliminary cost analysis was also performed to justify the use of oxygenating slurries.IntroductionGeneral:It was proposed almost 149 years ago (Elsner 1846) that oxygen is required for the dissolution of gold in cyanide solution. However, little attention were paid to oxygen application in the gold milling industry during the following one hundred years. Due to the constraints of gold price, reagent costs, refractory ores, and environmental issues in the past decade, the oxygen enhancement in the cyanidation process was introduced to the gold milling industry for increasing operation efficiency, reducing production costs, and meeting the requirement of environmental standard.The advantages of oxygen-enriched cyanidation have been reviewed by several investigators (Hague 1992, Jara et al 1992, Henderson 1989, Loroesch et al 1988, Elmore 1987, Cathro 1963). "A major geomechanical study was conducted for one of the UAE onshore oil fields with the purpose of studying reservoir rock properties and stress distribution, based on which a 3D coupled reservoir geomechanical model was built. This model was later used for wellbore stability analysis and for analyzing the effect of fractures on future reservoir production performance, including fracture deformation and permeability evolution occurring due to reservoir depletion and resulting changes in local stress field. The subject of this study was a complex fractured Upper Cretaceous carbonate reservoir characterized by high degree of heterogeneity, both vertically and laterally. Wellbore instability related drilling problems were encountered while drilling the wells in this field. The problems were mainly in drilling the horizontal wells, including breakouts and mud losses. Experimental results of laboratory tests used in this study are summarized in Part I of this paper whereas wellbore stability analysis and formulation of a3D geomechanical model that was built for that purpose is summarized herein.A 3D geomechanical reservoir model was developed, which included natural fractures. The mechanical properties of the reservoir rock, such as Young’s modulus, Poisson’s ratio, UCS, friction angle and tensile strength were populated based on the correlations established in Part I of this paper and the developed model was then used to simulate the 3D mechanical-property distribution and the evolution of the in situ stresses in the field due to depletion from 1983 to present-day. Based on the full field model, mud weight cubes were developed to predict the safe mud weight windows in different drilling directions. In addition, well stability prediction for two planned wells was performed using a 3D near-borehole model. Firstly, the computed stress state and mechanical properties simulated in the full field model were extracted along the well trajectory of an existing horizontal well which was drilled recently and then, a3D near-borehole model was constructed along the well trajectory. The wellbore stability analysis along the well trajectory, including stress state, strain distribution and displacements, was performed to identify the instability events along the well trajectory. It has been seen that the presence of natural fractures is closely related to the recorded borehole instability incidents. The computed plastic strains which indicate the wellbore failure were consistent with the recorded wellbore instability events in the FMI image logs, what provide further verification of the developed model. Then, this 3D near-borehole model was applied to two planned horizontal wells and the wellbore stability analysis for the two wells was carried out.The results showed that drilling vertically in the reservoir is safer than drilling horizontally. However, the drilling mud weight window in the vertical direction is narrow, being as narrow as 18.7 pcf or 0.299 sg locally. Drilling horizontally is less stable towards the maximum far field stress direction than towards the minimum far field stress direction. The mud weight cubes were used to identify the optimal well placement and well trajectory. For planned well trajectories, this technology can also be used to determine the optimal mud weight."

"Atmospheric leaching of arsenical sulfide concentrates, and especially enargite leaching, is one of the major challenges within the current hydrometallurgy research area. One of the recent processes developed for sulfide ore treatment is atmospheric leaching in the presence of AF 5, a novel carbon based catalyst, in chloride media. The quantification of different ion concentrations during enargite and chalcopyrite leaching in the presence of AF 5 were measured and the copper recovery rates of 97% and 96% were achieved. The objective of this study is to shed light on the leaching mechanism of the sulfide minerals. Based on the speciation of iron and copper by different titration methods, the AF 5 catalyst first reduced ferric and cupric ions and then oxidized ferrous, cuprous and arsenite ions. The oxidation behavior of the catalyst enhanced the leaching results. The AF 5 catalyst also caused in situ precipitation of scorodite in leaching experiment. The speciation of ions in the chloride media were simulated by Phreeqc software and the dominant species in the leaching solution were determined.INTRODUCTION The hydrometallurgy of copper has been used for several decades and is still under development for more complex copper sulfide minerals due to their refractory nature. Most of the world copper reserves are in the form of chalcopyrite; and enargite is known as a major contaminant. Pyrometallurgical processing of enargite is problematic due to arsenic release and tight environmental regulations (Peacey, Gupta, and Ford n.d.). On the other hand, lower recoveries in the hydrometallurgical processes make most of these processes impractical. Several leaching processes have been developed for the leaching of copper sulfide minerals. Some of the common treatment methods for copper sulfide minerals are pressure oxidation leaching (POX), CESL, Activox, Albion process, atmospheric ferric sulfate leaching, Dynatec, Galvanox, and Hydro copper process (Barr, Defreyne, and Mayhew 2005; Conner and Anderson 2013; D.G. Dixon, Mayne, and Baxter 2008; Hyvärinen and Hämäläinen 2005; Palmer and Johnson 2005; Rohner, Bartsch, and Ngoviky 2012). Generally it is not viable to dissolve copper sulfide minerals at ambient pressure in mild acidic media and dissolution of these refractory minerals requires harsh conditions in the presence of oxidant materials (Biswas and Davenport 2002). Ferric ions have been used as an oxidant in different media in copper sulfide leaching processes. U. S. Bureau of Mines’ Reno Metallurgy Research Center in 1969 (Haver and Wong 1971) investigated ferric chloride leaching of chalcopyrite. Dutrizac and Macdonald (1972) studied ferric sulfate leaching of enargite. Based on this study, 50% of the copper was recovered at 80-85 ºC after 7 days of leaching. Cupric ions can also be used as an oxidant. Parker, Paul, and Power (1981) stated that cupric/cuprous couples are more effective than ferric/ferrous couples in chloride media because they are rapid and reversible. The Hydro Copper process leaches copper sulfide minerals in chloride solution catalyzed by cupric ions. In this process, copper dissolves as cuprous ions in presence of cupric ions (about 10 g/L) (Hyvärinen and Hämäläinen 2005)."

This paper is one of a series pre-pared to study the role of fuels and reductants in metallurgical processes, especially from the viewpoint of Canadian requirements. The object of these studies is to provide a reason-ably authoritative interpretation on the interrelation of fuels in light of the considerable changes that have taken place in the Canadian energy field during the past few years. Previous papers in this group have dealt with the problem generally, and specifically in terms of the development of the iron and steel industry of Western Canada. These latter papers, presented at the Symposium on Iron and Steel in Western Canada held in Edmonton, Alberta, on September 8-9, 1959, surveyed the ferrous processes of interest for use in Wes tern Canada, especially with regard to solid fuel requirements. At that time it was evident that there was a need for a similar study of the fuels aspect of the non-ferrous metals industry.

These guidelines are also recommended for use in the planning and execution of exploration programs which will not be reported under NI 43-101. This set of broad guidelines or ""best practices"" has been drawn up to ensure a consistently high quality of work that will maintain public confidence and assist securities regulators. The guidelines are not intended to inhibit the original thinking or application of new approaches, that are fundamental to successful mineral exploration.Results should be summarized and reported in a Technical Report of good professional quality in accordance with the National Instrument 43-101 and Form 1 contained in that instrument. All exploration work from which public reporting will ensue must be designed and carried out under the supervision of a Qualified Person (""QP""). In the last decade a great dealt of attention has been paid to the chemistry of polynuclear gold derivatives with a central heteroatom, not only from the experimental and structural but also from the theoretical standpoint (1). Interesting hypercoordinated species of the type [C(AuPR3)5]+, [C(AuPR3)6]2+, [N(AuPR3)5]2+, [P(AuPR3)5]2+ and [P(AuPR3)6]3+ have been described (2), apart from other complexes with more conventional stoichiometry, and all have in common the presence of gold-gold interactions of ca. 3 Å. Usually, the chemistry of the first row elements of the p-block is known to follow classical rules of bonding, and only in cases of extreme electron-deficiency has the traditional electron count to be reconsidered to account for special types of molecular or solid state structures. Many of these heteroatomcentered complexes are electron-deficient and the gold-gold interactions provide a significant contribution to their stability. The attraction between these closed-shell systems has recently captured the attention in inorganic and organometallic chemistry (1). P. Pyykkö has summarized the available theoretical and experimental evidence of intra- and inter-molecular interactions between heavy metal atoms, such as Au(I) (3). In general, when heavy metals are involved in such interaction, the closed-shell attractions are of metallophilic or van der Waals type, as has been found for d8, d10 coinage-metals, and d10s2 centers. Experimental evidence for the aurophilic Au(I)???Au(I) attraction is available from crystallography, NMR and Raman spectroscopies, and optical spectroscopic measurements of the interaction strength (4). It is manifested in molecular conformations with relatively close Au???Au interactions of ca. 3 Å, whose strength has been estimated at ca. 25-50 kJ/mol (5). These attractions are weaker than most covalent or ionic bonds, but stronger than other van der Waals bonds and comparable in strength to typical hydrogen bonds. The phenomenon cannot be satisfactorily explained by classical theories such as hybridization (3). From a theoretical point of view, the attractions close to equilibrium distances are caused by dispersive interactions together with relativistic effects (6). The attractive contributions are dominated by pair-excitations from the heavy metal, such as gold, strengthened by relativistic effects. In all the cases where there are inter- or intramolecular metal-metal attractions, the correlation effects are essential; if they are omitted, at the Hartree-Fock (HF) level, repulsive interactions are obtained (6). Hence, it is necessary to use at least second-order Møller-Plesset level (MP2) methods for the dispersive forces, which are included in the electronic correlation effects (7).

"The Iron Ore Company of Canada (IOCC} has mined and processed an iron deposit in Western Labrador along the Labrador-Quebec border since the early 1960' s. Current capacity is approximately 19 million tonnes of concentrate, 70% of which is converted to pellets at these facilities.The ore deposits are located in hills rising 150 to 300 meters above the adjacent lakes, and most of them are covered by very little overburden. The iron minerals are mainly specular hematite and magnetite hosted in a quartz formation. Crude ore averages 40% Fe that is concentrated to 65.5% Fe. IOCC is an extensive operation extending from Labrador City NF to Sept-Iles Quebec. It consists of open pit mining, concentrating, pelletizing, railway, and dock loading facilities.The Concentrator liberates iron from the silica by crushing and grinding the ore to -14 mesh (-1190 microns}. Ground ore is concentrated in spirals and filtered for transportation. Spiral tailings are treated in a Magnetic Recovery Plant (Mag Plant} that recovers lost magnetite. Mag Plant tailings are treated in a Hematite Spiral Plant (Hem Plant} that scavenges fine iron remaining in this stream.This report deals with ongoing iron recovery initiatives within the ConcentratorIron Losses in the ConcentratorIron recovery at IOCC is approximately 70.5%. This compares with recoveries that range from 65% to 86% for other iron mines in our area. Other world large iron ore producers dig and ship concentrate quality ore directly out of the ground and have an effective recovery of 100%. With increasing costs for labour, equipment, and supplies an increase in iron recovery is required to keep the operation viable.More than 90% of our iron concentrate is produced by gravity separation using spirals. The physical characteristics of the iron minerals that most effect recovery are mineral grain size and degree of liberation. We divide ground ore into three size categories -coarse, intermediate, and fines. A brief description of each size fraction follows:"

This paper begins with a short history of air compressors, emphasizing their "roots" in the mining industry. It then describes the types of compressors available, including reciprocal, the various rotary positive-displacement compressors, and the centrifugal. The advantages and disadvantages of selecting a certain type of compressor over another are enumerated, considering customer requirements and operating costs, among other factors. Guidelines to operation and maintenance are discussed, including installation, monitoring and maintenance procedures. Finally, the paper addresses itself to future trends, with special attention being given to the system concept, the increasing use of rotary compressors, power consumption, reliability, packaging and noise attenuation.

Lightweight, high-pressure cylinders for compressed hydrogen storage are essential components for fuel cell vehicles. Storage volume and mass are two key considerations. Current on-board hydrogen storage systems are based on a maximum pressure of 350 bar. While 350 bar systems are excellent solutions for many applications, some situations require higher storage densities due to space restrictions. As a result, significant research and development work has been expended by cylinder manufacturers, systems providers, testing agencies and automotive manufacturers to develop 700 bar systems with reduced storage volumes. Dynetek Industries Ltd. has proactively developed several 700 bar storage cylinders based on a seamless aluminum liner over wrapped with a carbon fiber composite. This paper presents the challenges and processes involved in the design, testing and certification for Dynetek Industries Ltd. 700 bar cylinders. This paper also provides reasoning for further volume and mass optimization of compressed hydrogen cylinders through the establishment of realistic cylinder usage parameters in standards. In particular, the overly conservative fill life requirement for cylinders is examined.

This paper briefly describes the current state of underground coal gasification (UCG) processes globally and in the Slovak Republic. Recent results of laboratory and technical tests are presented. In addition, on site measurements have added new knowledge of UCG technology. A series of laboratory tests based on physical models shows promise for managed UCG process control.

Abstract -There are a number of sedimentary exhalative massive sulfide (SEDEX) deposits in the Proterozoic Langshan-Zhaertai rift at the western segment of the northern margin of the North China platform in China, including more than ten large, medium and small deposits located in a belt of 300 km EW by 50 km to 100 km NS, with large Cu, Pb, Zn, Ag, and S reserves. In several representative SEDEX deposits in the rift, the mineralizing elements are prominently zoned, horizontally or vertically, with Cu decreasing but Pb increasing from west to east, Cu decreasing but Zn increasing from bottom to top, and Zn restricted to the bottom half. The ore-hosting rocks, characterized by a clear manganese halo, have developed a polymetallic mineralization in positive relation with their carbon contents. Their isotopic aspects are: ?34S has relatively large positive values, fluctuating between +5‰ and +35‰, compared with Pb isotopic compositions which are less variable, with a model age of 1600 Ma to 1800 Ma, showing that they are mantle-derived. The mineralizing materials were associated undoubtedly with the contemporaneously faulting events in the rift. The deposits owe their origin to seafloor exhalation, with sedimentary rocks as their hosts.

Severe disasters have struck Japan in recent years. Following these disasters, construction robots have played important roles in investigation and restoration work in the disaster regions. To be applied in this way, construction robots require many functions according to the purpose of their use in each case. There are clear differences in the functions and usage conditions required by investigation robots and those required by execution robots. These differences will be important when designing and operating construction robots in the future. This report introduces a volcano exploration robot and unmanned execution system as examples of construction robots used for investigations and executions respectively. Based on this, the report organizes important characteristics of construction robots and explains differences in the concepts of disaster investigation robots and disaster restoration robots. Because they are used in harsh natural conditions and do not have any execution functions, efforts are made to clarify the fact that investigation robots have to overcome many problems such as mobility. When a construction robot is used, the scenario of the operation of the construction robot (execution plan) is extremely important, and in addition, it is necessary to clearly define the way it will be used according to the purpose of its use and specification conditions. In a plan for an unmanned execution system, it is possible to mitigate several strict prerequisite conditions by proposing a well-constructed execution plan. For example, the execution efficiency of an unmanned execution system can be improved by effectively using a temporary road.

Almost every form of iron ore and carbon material has been used as a raw material in the production of pig iron in electric reduction furnaces. Experience derived from the operation of the large 33,000-kva. Tysland-Hole furnaces, however, indicates that production results are very much influenced by the raw material conditions. The author presents the principle pattern of the metallurgical structure of the interior of an electric pig iron furnace. On the basis of this, he discusses the variations of electrical and metallurgical conditions for the process which will take place with changing raw materials. The formation of a coke bed underneath the electrodes, and its influence on the furnace operation, is illustrated. Several commercial polyacrylamide flocculants most widely used in Western Canadian mineral processing plants have been analyzed chemically and compared in standardized settling tests as aids to thickening and clarification. Data are included for both dry and liquid-type flocculants. Percentages of active ingredients in these commercial products varied Widely. Performances were compared on the basis of: equal additions of active ingredients, nearly equal molecular weights and nearly equal degrees of ionic character. Based on zone settling velocities and supernatant clarities of siliceous slurries coagulated by lime additions, dry flocculants proved more economical than liquid flocculants. Using these same two criteria, the most highly anionic were more effective than either weakly anionic or non ionic polyacrylamide- type flocculants.

The use of roof bolting gave promise of substantial economic benefits to Continuous Miner operations at Michel Colliery. As the first step in the adoption of bolting, 142 anchorage tests, employing six types of anchor shells, were made in three mines. Significant differences were found in the anchorage capabilities of the various shells and the various roof rocks. Introduction S PORADIC attempts at roof bolting had been made at Michel Colliery over a period of ten years. Results were indifferent or inconclusive. A concerted effort was not made, because a compelling need for bolting did not exist. By 1962, however, the advent of Continuous Miners had brought a new significance to roof bolting and, at the same time, the increasing price and scarcity of mine timber made bolting materials more competitive in cost. A fresh appraisal of bolting, therefore, became justified and necessary. The potential benefits of roof bolting at Michel are several.

This paper considers thickening mine tailings to dense non-segregating slurry or paste for surface disposal. The driving motivation for this initiative is the elimination of ponds, reduction in containment dams and significant decrease in water being sent to the tailings basin. This inherently reduces risks of environmental and structural failure. Some of the engineering challenges in creating a stable stack of thickened or paste tailings are identified, and possible field and laboratory testing techniques in support of design are discussed. Finally, the integration of monitoring activities into the ongoing management of the surface disposal site is considered.

Investigations into the effect of a variety of acid digestions on common rock-forming minerals demonstrated a considerable variation in the proportion of the total metal extracted. A similar situation applies to the analysis of a number of common rock types. In addition, grain-size variation has an effect on the amount extracted by certain digestions. This work indicates that considerable care needs to be given to selecting an appropriate acid digestion capable of determining metal held in particular components of a sample. By using partial extraction techniques, the identification of certain patterns of metal distribution, undetectable by normal methods involving total metal analysis, may be achieved.

A Sievert ' technique was used. The few determinations made on 10 per cent and 20 per cent V alloys did not show any deviations from Sieverts' law up to I>N2 = 1 atmosphere. The same held true for alloys of 0.2 per cent Ti. Nitrogen absorptions in Fe-Ti alloys, containing from 0.50 to 0.77 per cent Ti at 1,600°C, follow Sieverts' law at low PN2 values, but, due to the formation of a delta titanium nitride phase, deviate from this law beyond critical values of PN2? There is evidence that this phase is Ti1.1N. Geochemical dispersion of metals under various environmental conditions is discussed within the frame-work of Eh (oxidation potential) and pH (acidity). In general, two aspects are considered -(1) the oxidation of certain primary sulphides in the outcrop or sub-outcrop environment, and (2) the movement of metals in different dispersion media. Practical applications of each are illustrated by means of exploration case histories representing environmental conditions in the Canadian Shield, the southwestern United States and the Caribbean.

T HE APPROACH to maintenance must always be ?completely positive: there must be no question of putting off difficult problems until it is more convenient to tackle them. By this it is meant that a piece of machinery or equipment which, by experience, is known to be due for a check should not, merely because it appears to be operating satisfactorily, be left until it reaches a critical .condition and breaks down. The mentality of the Maintenance Manager must be completely orderly and methodical and he should, in fact, possess a ledger-book mind, having a debit and credit outlook. The debit side would be that applying to time out of service, cost in wages, material, personnel involved, etc., and the credit side that relating to continuous operational time of the locomotive and therefore to the ultimate benefit of the mine and the personnel who work there. The Maintenance Manager is not concerned with design problems, and although he and the personnel under his jurisdiction are not engaged in productive work, he and his staff do, nevertheless, add greatly to or detract from the overall efficiency of the organization. Provided the machinery placed in his care is good to start with, he must take the best steps he possibly can to keep it running. However, he may, on occasion, be forced to improvise and this is where the ingenuity of a clever man rises to the occasion.
