Galvanic corrosion is a potentially major concern associated with the application of stainless steel reinforcement which is in direct (electrical) contact with carbon steel reinforcement in concrete structures. Judicious use of stainless steel rebar in both new construction and rehabilitation of older structures is a viable, cost-effective option for extending service life and reducing maintenance costs. Questions, however, had arisen about the possibility of increased corrosion due to galvanic effects. This paper investigates the galvanic-coupling behaviours of three different types of stainless steel and carbon steel. Tests were performed both in electrochemical cells and with specimens in concrete inside an environmental chamber. The results show that oxygen reduction on stainless steel is the rate-determining factor for galvanic coupling of these two metals. It is much lower than that of passive carbon steel. As a result, the galvanic coupling of stainless steel with carbon steel will not increase the risk of corrosion of carbon steel reinforcement.

Geostatistical conditional simulations are becoming increasingly popular as tools that provide models of uncertainty at different stages of a mining project. They have been used as grade control tools in daily operations, to assess the uncertainty of minable reserves at the project?s feasibility stage, and to assess mineralization potential in certain settings. Other applications include assessment of recoverable reserves, resource and reserve classification, and drill hole spacing optimization studies. All large-scale applications of conditional simulations intend to benefit from the ?correct? (or ?accurate?) characterization of uncertainty, adequately describing the variability observed from the data and its impact on the final objective. The objective of this paper is to compare the ad-hoc ?uncertainty model? provided by a traditional classification scheme with the probability intervals resulting from a conditional simulation model. It is argued that the uncertainty model derived from the use of classification schemes is of little practical use to the mining company or operation. The paper emphasizes differences in uncertainty based on the size of the mining unit considered and the extraction method, and local geological differences. Most importantly, it discusses confidence intervals for these mining units, as compared to the relative precision envisioned by a typical classification scheme. The application described in this paper is taken from a medium-sized Cu open and underground mine in northern Chile, and it demonstrates the impact of several variables on the resulting conditional simulation models. It also compares a more ?traditional? resource classification scheme applied, and the wide difference in local confidence intervals for each mining unit.

Cameco's Cigar Lake Operation (CLO) started commercial uranium ore production in 2015. Initial mining was focused in areas of the ore body with relatively low concentrations of elements of concern (EOCs). As mining progressed into areas of the ore body that were richer in EOCs, some statistically significant behavior of certain analytes was noted in the water treatment circuits. It was ultimately found that the CLO ore body natively hosts numerous alkyl arsine compounds in addition to inorganic arsenide minerals. The alkyl arsines were found to be recalcitrant to typical adsorption on ferrihydrite, with the degree of recalcitrance associated with the degree of alkylation. A number of changes to the process circuits and water balance were performed and planned in order to inhibit the transport of alkyl arsines from the ore stream into the process water stream, and to optimize the overall site water usage. In some instances, the interactions of equipment in conjoined circuits of the process had controlling effects on the behavior of the overall circuit. Work continues to iterate upon the capital design features in order to further tighten the water balance, and to optimize water usage and operating costs.

"This work investigates the early stages of precipitation in Al-Mg-Si alloys using a combination of high angle annular dark field scanning transmission electron microscopy (HAADF-STEM), selected area electron diffraction (SAED) and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Quenching from a high temperature (solution) treatment leaves an alloy in a high-energy unstable state, with solute and vacancies in supersaturation. Thus, already at room temperature (RT) a large driving force exists for solute atoms to cluster and order on the Al matrix positions. DFT calculations indicate that strain alleviation is important at this stage. We observe larger regions of Mg-dominated L10 ordering together with a Si-dominated ordering of smaller clusters in a particular geometry connected to the Si-network found in all the precipitates. In addition, building blocks of the main hardening phase ?'', stabilized by vacancies, are observed at higher, typical pre-aging temperatures.INTRODUCTION Al-Mg-Si (6xxx) alloys are widely used in industry due to a combination of favorable properties such as strength, ductility, corrosion resistance and lightweight. They undergo a complex production route, usually consisting of the following thermo-mechanical steps: casting, homogenization, extrusion or rolling, solution heat treatment (SHT) and artificial aging (AA). The SHT takes place at temperatures above the solvus line in the phase diagram, usually between 500°C and 570°C, followed by a rapid cooling to RT. This ensures that high amounts of solute atoms, uniformly distributed on the cubic face-centered (FCC) Al lattice, together with a large amount of vacancies, are quenched-in. The material is therefore in a super-saturated and unstable state. During the subsequent AA, at temperatures usually between 150°C and 220°C, the solute atoms diffuse and cluster, forming metastable precipitates with needle/ lath/ rod morphologies having the main growth direction along <100>Al. With a maximum alloy solute level (Mg + Si) of only 2%, these precipitates increase material strength up to three times that of pure Al, and are essential for the final material properties. To understand and make better use of this phenomenon, it is imperative to research the nature of the precipitates (such as their atomic structure), measure their key parameters (number density, size, volume fraction) and connect it to material properties (Marioara, Andersen, Zandbergen & Holmestad, 2005; Marioara et al., 2014). "The East Sullivan Stock (ESS) is a small, composite felsic alkaline pluton of presumedlate Archean age in the Val d’Or mining district. Three main facies have been distinguished: mon-zonite sensu stricto, porphyritic monzonite, and green trachytic porphyry. This monzonitic group ofrocks is of relatively homogeneous composition with high abundances of Na2O, K2O, Ba, Sr, Rb, Zr,Mo and LREE. The alkaline ESS is distinguished from other igneous units in the Val d’Or miningdistrict, such as the Bourlamaque Batholith, by relatively high concentrations of Ba, Sr, Rb, Mo, Cuand Au. The ESS hosts many base (Cu, Mo) and precious (Au) metal occurrences, including: (1)porphyry style Cu-Au-Mo disseminated sulfde deposits, (2) Cu-Au deposits in volcanic rocks near the ESS contact, and (3) pyritic gold mineralization in east-west trending shear zones. The ESS is well defined by concentrical zoning on the aeromagnetic vertical gradient color map, and displays four linear trends, which are assumed to be structural lineaments, at 035°-055°, 320°-300°, east-west, and north-south. The main mineral occurrences related to the stock display a preferred spatial association with the east-west linear magnetic trends.The ESS is preferentially located along a major structure and was emplaced late in the evolutionof the Abitibi subprovince like other felsic alkaline plutons. This stock is similar to late-tectonic min-eralized felsic alkaline intrusions of the Kirkland Lake and Larder Lake mining districts in Ontario, and to the Allard stock in the U.S.A. which is associated with gold and base metal mineralization. Similarities also exist with younger alkaline plutons associated with Cu-Mo-Au porphyry deposits in the Canadian Cordillera, which formed in tensional tectonic environments. The felsic alkaline magmamay have formed by partial melting of deeply buried supracrustal rocks, concomitant with the development of deep fractures such as the Cadillac Fault. In such an environment, hydrothermal solutions carrying remobilized metals from deep supracrustal rocks may have deposited gold and base metals in structural traps. Magnesium has excellent bio-compatibility in terms of its density, strength, elastic modulus and toxicity. However, due to its poor corrosion performance, so far magnesium has not been successfully used in the human body as a permanent implant material. Nevertheless, there is a possibility to utilize the low corrosion resistance of magnesium to make magnesium into a temporary implant component that can gradually dissolve in the human body after surgical region heals. This will avoid the secondary operation to remove the temporarily implanted component and the chronic inflammatory discomfort caused by the implant. This paper is aimed at exploring the possibility of using magnesium as a degradable bio-material through investigating the corrosion behaviors of pure magnesium and surface treated magnesium in a simulated body fluid (SBF) solution. It was found that magnesium corroded rapidly in the SBF solution, resulting in vigorous hydrogen evolution and a strong alkalization effect. Hence, it is impractical to use magnesium as a permanent implanted material or even a degradable implant. However, a proper anodizing treatment can significantly improve the corrosion resistance of magnesium, and hence slower down the hydrogen evolution and alkalization processes, which will allow to control the corrosion or degradation of magnesium at a desired rate in the human body. With a controllable corrosion rate, it is believed that magnesium as a degradable implanted material will be eventually achievable.

"In July 2004 workers at the ABI Smelter in Bécancour (Quebec, Canada) went on strike. Contingency plan were ready to face the situation and plan was done to operate one potline out of three. Two lines were stopped; keeping in mind the restart on cold metal after the strike was over. The subject to be presented and shared includes a summary of work organization including training, schedule of restart, pot cleaning, pot preparation, crash start method, follow up after crash start, safety and environment. This major project has been a very big challenge. It shows that people involvement is a must and the key success. It is then true to say : ""People who believe in success will work and act in order to get there"" and ""People who don&apos;t believe in success will act in such a way to fail"" Then both will prove they were right to think their own way ! Sharing such experience can be interesting because it&apos;s a true story and people like true stories."

"AS I begin my remarks this morning, please let me say how honoured and gratified I was to receive your invitation to address you here during your deliberations in historic Quebec City. The high esteem in which your Institute is held is reflected in the respect and deference accorded to it by industry across Canada. I feel privileged to be here with you today.I would like to discuss with you some applications of natural gas in the mining industry and suggest to you, in closing, some possible avenues of future development.Natural gas first became avail-able for industrial purposes in Northern Ontario in late 1958. Acceptance of natural gas, as a source of energy by the industry of that area, has been both widespread and gratifying. The mining industry of Northern Ontario has in-creased its annual use of natural gas by approximately 35 per cent each year since 1958. We believe that this trend will continue, al-though we will probably have to accept a more modest 10 per cent annual gain as the market approaches saturation. I would like to explain how we were able to do this and where all this gas is used. Our first sales were largely a matter of price-and the savings we offered were substantial."

Facilities for carrying out operations in the three sections of the plant -the sampling section, the ore treatment section and the asbestos section -are fully discussed as well as laboratory facilities for (a) the preliminary testing of ores prior to pilot plant treatment and (b) the grading and testing of asbestos fibre. An investigation of the pressure pulse spectrum generated by the gas dispersion processes in a Peirce Smith copper converter was undertaken via the simultaneous measurement of four tuyeres using high frequency pressure transducers. The data was captured, stored, and analyzed using digital data processing techniques; including power spectral density plots, band-pass filtering, and a principal component analysis (PCA). The process was characterized throughout by a dominant 3 Hz pulse signature attributed to the formation of lateral gas envelopes. In particular, test tuyeres in the tuyere line tended to operate synchronously at the dominant frequency, regardless of operating conditions tested and despite being distributed along the converter. Synchronous behavior is thought to arise from the acoustic coupling and possible resonance behavior of the gas delivery system on the converter.

"The Quesnel Trough is underlain by a thick sequence of mainly Upper Triassic and Lower Jurassic volcanic-clastic and sedimentary rocks that lie between the highly deformed Proterozoic and Paleozoic rocks in the Omineca Geanticline to the east and the Upper Paleozoic Cache Creek Group in the Pinchi Geanticline to the west. Broad areas of the Trough between Kamloops and Williams Lake are covered by Eocene volcanics and sediments and by Miocene-Pliocene plateau lava. Granitic intrusions were apparently mainly confined to two major episodes; one about 200 m.y. ago (coeval with the Guichon batholith) and one about 100 m.y. ago. In addition, the region includes small granitic and syenitic intrusions, some porphyritic, that may be all or partly still younger. Exposures in the region are generally small and scattered, obscured by widespread, not necessarily thick glacial deposits. This, together with the extensive Tertiary cover, makes prospecting difficult. The part of the Quesnel Trough discussed here is the direct northwest-ward extension of the copper-rich Kamloops-Merritt-Princeton region. It contains the Boss Mountain molybdenum mine, related to a breccia zone induced in a batholith of the oldest group by a younger intrusion, and the Cariboo Bell copper deposit in Lower Jurassic volcanic-elastic rocks and syenitic intrusions. The Gibraltar deposit, in a 200-m.y. intrusion, is within the Pinchi Geanticline close to the margin of the Trough. Molybdenum prospects are mainly restricted within or near the 100-m.y. granitic rocks. Copper prospects, on the other hand, are most prominent in the volcanic-elastic rocks and in the 200-m.y.-old granitic rocks, although they can also be spatially related to younger intrusions. Copper thus has a wide potential distribution.The writers believe that the region is deserving of careful and comprehensive exploration by directly applying the knowledge and techniques developed in the important producing areas to the south. All of the major pre-Tertiary geological elements seem to have potential for mineral deposits; none should be ignored. A thorough knowledge of the thickness and distribution of the Tertiary rocks and the development of geophysical methods to ""see through"" them is of particular importance."

A numerical method is proposed to propagate multiple discrete fractures leading to primary fragmentation in a mine that is being worked using block caving. Deformation is computed using the finite element method, fractures are represented explicitly, and the mine domain is discretized by an unstructured mesh. Bedding planes are represented by systematically varying the elastic modulus of the rock and by defining horizontal weakness planes. Fractures and matrix are represented using parametric surfaces, and tips are defined by their boundary curves. Tip advance is controlled by a failure criterion, and a criterion for propagation direction and magnitude, based on the evaluation of the modal stress intensity factors. A novel domain integral approach is applied to accurately compute stress intensity factors (K) ahead of fracture tips in three dimensions. The method does not require a structured volumetric mesh structure around the crack tip, as integration is performed over a series of virtual surface domains along the crack front. The method is efficient, as it makes direct use of automatically generated, arbitrary tetrahedral meshes, and approximates stress intensity factors (KI, KII, KIII) along each crack front using Interaction-integrals. As opposed to the JIntegral, the method does not decompose K a-posteriori, but instead uses an auxiliary field to directly compute modal K. When using this method, numerical approximations of K do not exhibit dependence on the mesh layout, and require meshes that can generally be ten times coarser than are required by displacement- and stress-based methods. Volumetric meshing requires only, on average, 17% of each computation step. Thus, cracks do not follow any pre-existing mesh structure, and the method is well suited for high-density fracture datasets. The method is demonstrated for primary fragmentation of a mine area covering 110 initial draw points, immediately beneath a 2m high undercut. Displacement is constrained at all boundaries except the surface of the undercut. The growth of the fractures is investigated at the onset of the undercut. Ninety initial disc-shaped fractures are taken into account, each having an initial radius of 10 m. Fractures grow around the undercut, intersect the bedding plane boundaries, and the domain is fragmented as a result.

"This chapter outlines the organization of mine/ mill complexes in Canadian mining companies. Many factors unique to the Canadian mining industry will affect the design of the organization in the future: geographic location, the size and the type of orebody, etc. Mining companies cannot choose where new operations will be located, that is dictated by the location of the orebody. New mines are seldom started near established communities. Rather, the towns usually grow up near the mines. The remoteness of most Canadian mining operations has caused severe problems in attracting and/ or retaining all levels of employees. This means that training has a high priority within each operation.Another factor affecting mine/ mill organizations is the size of the operation. Larger operations generally require more departments and increased specialization to manage equipment and manpower effectively. Thus, for mine/mill complexes, organizational charts are less standardized than in other industries. It is often necessary to organize around the work force rather than develop a chart and then acquire the trained personnel to fill the diagrammed positions.The information presented in this chapter has been derived from the responses received from a survey of Canadian mining operations.Principles of OrganizationOrganization can be defined as deployment of personnel to accomplish definite goals. In the mining industry, the major goals are typically the projected number of tons and grade of ore mined on a daily, weekly, monthly and yearly basis. Organizing involves establishment of authority relationships with provisions for both vertical and horizontal co-ordination within the company structure. Vertical co-ordination is the delegation of responsibility and communication of goals and reporting of progress between the supervisor and subordinate. Horizontal co-ordination is communication between departments at positions of equal authority to determine methods of achieving predefined goals. The organization structure must reflect the objectives and plans of the company, and must clearly define areas of authority.Two criteria for effective organization are departmentalization and manpower planning."

At the Canadian Natural Resources Limited (CNRL) Horizon Mine they use Wenco International Mining Systems Ltd (Wenco) Fleet Management System to monitor and control their production fleet with the goal of increasing operator productivity and safety, and raising dispatcher awareness and control. Amongst the broad productivity goals CNRL wanted to achieve with help from the system was a very specific need to blend ore at the truck level. CNRL uses 25m x 25m block geological model information to represent their complex ore body. Wenco&apos;s High Precision GPS application, BenchManager provides precise graphical actual-vs-design operator feedback and system integration. Together the two companies advanced the BenchManager product to meet CNRL&apos;s needs by using live camera feeds to compare activity with data collection that ultimately lead to changes in the algorithm to include enhanced GPS indicators and the support of a GLONASS assisted solution generating distance and bearing information.

Fracture mechanics based techniques are used to gain insight into the phenomenon of stress corrosion cracking (SCC) and to develop guidance for avoiding or controlling SCC. From constant extension rate experiments under rising load or rising displacement conditions the susceptibility of high strength steels, aluminum, magnesium and titanium alloys to SCC and hydrogen embrittlement can be assessed. Such tests on pre-cracked specimens are also well suited for studying the mechanisms leading to SCC by employing appropriate models for the degradation of metallic materials which take into account the uptake of atomic hydrogen from the corrosive environment. Measurements of crack growth resistance curves using the crack tip opening displacement as fracture parameter can be compared with simulated R-curves obtained from modeling of the mechanism of hydrogen embrittlement. The materials investigated are a high strength steel and a magnesium alloy both exposed to environmental conditions which fostered the uptake of hydrogen.

Industrial smelting furnaces are subjected to significant structural changes and deterioration caused by the conditions under which they operate. The current methods for the structural assessment of furnaces include visual inspections, analysis of thermal data, acousto ultrasonic-echo (AU-E) of the refractory lining and surveying of the key structural elements. Acoustic Emission (AE) non-destructive testing (NDT) technique has proven its capabilities for continuous monitoring of industrial installations and structures. Recently, Hatch Ltd. has been successful in applying acoustic emission for monitoring furnace tapblocks, and expanding the scope of the acoustic emission monitoring to the structural integrity of the entire furnace. The capability of detecting emissions related to the fracture development in the furnace shell, movement of the refractory, electrode arcing, combined with efficient source location algorithms makes an acoustic emission system a comprehensive tool for the real-time furnace integrity monitoring. In this paper the concept of such state of the art system for structural integrity assessment is presented. The initial results of the acoustic emission monitoring together with data analysis techniques are discussed.

The first commercial application of the Dynatec two-stage zinc pressure leach process commenced operation at the metallurgical complex of Hudson Bay Mining and Smelting Co., Limited in Flin Flon, Manitoba in 1993. A key feature of the successful leaching operation is the presence of iron in solution, which facilitates oxygen transfer in the autoclaves and enables rapid oxidation of zinc sulphide minerals. At the same time, the solution from which zinc is recovered must be essentially iron free. Precipitation of iron from the solution starts in the autoclaves and is completed in subsequent atmospheric purification steps. Conveniently, these iron precipitation steps also remove nuisance elements such as arsenic and fluoride from the solution, while producing solids with good liquid-solid separation characteristics. This paper provides an overview of the current operations in Flin Flon, with particular reference to the behaviour and deportment of iron throughout the zinc plant.

"Recent developments in metal-based additive manufacturing (AM) technology have generated considerable interest in multiple industries, owing to flexibility in design and the ability to produce final components in their net shape. The AM of high-strength aluminium alloys has not been widely explored, due to findings of undesirable microstructures leading to short fatigue life and poor fracture toughness; restricting the application of AM to lower strength aluminium alloys (with cast-like Al-alloy compositions) to date. Herein, aluminium alloy AA2024 (Al-3.6Cu-1.2Mg) was additively manufactured via selective laser melting (SLM), with the resultant microstructures and corrosion properties characterised and compared to wrought AA2024-T3. Microstructural characterisation was carried out using transmission electron microscopy (TEM), revealing SLM produced AA2024 included a population of ?-phase (Al2Cu) in preference to S-phase (Al2CuMg) typical of wrought AA2024. Additionally, the corrosion properties were investigated by potentiodynamic polarisation in a range of NaCl concentrations, whilst elemental corrosion rates were also determined (including for open circuit exposure conditions) and quantified in situ with an inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometer coupled with an electrochemical flow cell. Results revealed a significant improvement in the corrosion resistance, and elemental dissolution of AM prepared 2024 relative to wrought AA2024-T3.INTRODUCTION Aluminium alloys remain the preferred candidate materials in applications requiring a balance of low density and strength. The ability to produce net shape components from aluminium alloys has accelerated due to recent developments in metal-based additive manufacturing (AM) technology, including selective laser melting (SLM) and powder bed 3D printing. The AM of Al-alloys, including Al-Si-Mg (namely AlSi10Mg), has become widespread commercially in recent years. Alloys including AlSi10Mg offer reliable and reproducible production by AM, however such alloys (and variants thereof) are not high strength alloys. The pursuit of higher strength AM Al-alloys presents significant merit to multiple industries; however, such higher strength AM Al-alloys have not been widely studied to date. The solidification of high strength Al-alloys during conventional (casting) operations needs to be executed in a manner that avoids so-called =hot-tearing‘, which can arise as a result of the solute type and loading. A report on the solidification of a high strength Al-alloy prepared by AM, along with factors related to solidification, was recently covered by Pollock and co-workers (Martin et al., 2017). It was reported that AM of high-strength aluminium alloys (which have to date been principally based on the compositions of wrought high strength Al-alloys) may lead to undesirable microstructures that reduce fatigue life and result in poor fracture toughness; presently limiting the application of AM to lower strength aluminium alloys (with cast-like Al-alloy compositions) to date."

The influence of natural electric currents, induced in the earth by changes in the earth's magnetic field, on the electric logging of boreholes has not always been recognized. Measurements made with fixed electrodes of changes in the vertical potential gradient in a hole near Calmar, Alberta, have indicated the effect of earth currents related to magnetic disturbances. It is found that appreciable errors in self-potential logging could arise during periods of magnetic storms, but the precise pat-tern of disturbance in any area seems to depend on the local structural conditions. As the amplitude of the natural earth currents increases toward the auroral zone, it is suggested that periods of magnetic disturbance be avoided, if possible, when electric logs are taken in the northern part of the western sedimentary basin.
