"The Renard Mine, 100% owned by Stornoway Diamonds, is located approximately 250 km north of the Cree community of Mistissini and 350 km north of Chibougamau in the James Bay region of north-central Québec. The project benefits from a large and growing resource, good mining conditions, strong social acceptance, a modest environmental footprint, and the development of direct-to-mine road infrastructure. Construction began on July 10, 2014; following the completion of a 946 million CAD project financing transaction. Now completed, the mine is the first diamond mine in Québec, and one of only six in Canada, employing approximately 500 people. First ore was delivered to the plant approximately 5 months ahead of schedule on July 15, 2016. Commercial production was declared on January 1, 2017. In general, the project ramp up has been characteristic of a type 1 McNulty curve. One of the challenges during production ramp-up was a redesign of processed kimberlite dewatering (replacing the dewatering centrifuge with two stages of hydrocyclones and a dewatering screen). A processing opportunity captured by Stornoway was the design and installation of an ore sorting facility which rejected free waste rock from the valuable host rock; kimberlite. Through tackling both challenges and opportunities, Stornoway has realised and is now exceeding their original design tonnage.PROJECT DESCRIPTION Stornoway Diamond Corporation (Stornoway) was established in 2003 resulting from to a plan of arrangement between Northern Empire Minerals Ltd. and Stornoway Ventures. In 2011, Stornoway acquired 100% interest of the Renard Mine. The construction of the Renard Mine began in 2014 and achieved full production in 2017 [1, 2]."

"On the west coast of Cape Breton Island four coal basins have been identified, varying in age and extending from Port Hood northeasterly to Chimney Corner. Those of Chimney Corner - St. Rose in the north and Port Hood in the south belong to the Pennsylvanian Riversdale Group while lying between them are the coal basins of Mabou and Inverness belonging to the younger Pictou Group. Almost all of the coal basins are submarine and coal mining was carried out on all basins at various times. The seams in all basins dip steeply seaward at angles from 10 to 20 degrees but were found to flatten seaward. The coal is ranked as a high volatile C bituminous coal. Ash and sulphur contents are high compared with Sydney coal and the coal has a tendency to spontaneous combustion when stored in large quantities.Of the four basins, the most significant is that of Mabou. At Mabou recent seismic and drilling investigations have indicated that although a sizable reserve of coal may be found offshore the structural problems, particularly faults, and the poor quality of the coal encountered will make it a resource of the future, if at all. Inferred resources have been calculated at 150 million tonnes in four seams over a 10 km2 area and extending 3 km from shore. The quality of the Mabou coals varies with ash, ranging from 5 to 25 per cent and sulphur up to 6 per cent. Calorific value ranges from 25.3 Mj I kg to 31. 7 Mj I kg. The Port Hood and St. Rose -Chimney Corner fields (Fig. 1) contain 16 million and 3 million tonnes respectively, but the Inverness basin is considered to have been depleted. The active mine in this area is the Evans Mine at St. Rose that is currently producing between 30 -50,000 tonnes a year from proven reserves of approximately 3 million tonnes."

In early 2000, CANMET-MMSL was engaged by the Ontario Ministry of Labour (OMOL) to conduct an international study of the practices, in several key mining jurisdictions, of determining the criteria that are used to decide when the wire ropes used in mine hoisting are to be retired from service. Subsequently, the writer visited key officials and institutions in Canada, the USA, the Republic of South Africa, the United Kingdom, Germany and Poland. Material from the Australian province of New South Wales and Hungary was also included. The report that resulted included, among other sections; (1) the history of wire rope and trends in manufacturing technology; (2) a review of mine hoisting practices; (3) the requirements as regards safety factors; (4) a review of the players and the inspection practices; (5) the criteria for rope replacement; (6) a look into the future to outline the developments that could take place in both hoisting and rope inspection practices in Canada; (7) recommendations. Subsequently, the report was issued as a book by OMOL, and as a CD-ROM by the Mining and Mineral Sciences Laboratories, Natural Resources Canada. In this paper the author presents the key findings and the recommendations made in the study.

"Yara Siilinjärvi in Finland is the Western Europe's only apatite mine. Annually it produces one million tons of apatite concentrate, which creates 10 million tons of tailings. At the beginning of 2017, Yara replaced their conventional TSF with a new tailings treatment plant, which increased the solids content of the slurry from 45–48% to 66–68%, making it possible to deposit as a paste. This extended the life-span of the current TSF from 2020 to 2035. This paper presents the storyline of the Yara paste plant project. The project began with laboratory testing and then progressed to pilot-scale thickening and beaching trials. After successful pilot trials, the final process design was implemented. Process automation played a key role in the project. An advanced control system is needed to maintain process stability and the desired operation point in various operational circumstances. Since commissioning the paste plant has been running consistently with an underflow solids content of 66-68%, with average beach slope angles of 3.5 degrees in the tailings disposal area. Robust thickener operation also leads to the trouble-free high-density pumping and high availability of the plan. During first year of operation the plant’s availability has been very good, over 97%, and currently, the plant is operated remotely from the main concentrator plant.INTRODUCTION The Yara Siilinjärvi Plant is owned by Yara International, a Norwegian fertiliser company. Yara Siilinjärvi is Western Europe's only apatite mine, and it primarily produces apatite concentrate for its Siilinjärvi phosphoric acid plant. A portion of the concentrate is also dried and shipped to other Yara fertiliser plants. The site annually produces one million tons of apatite concentrate, which creates approximately 10 million tons of tailings. Extending the lifespan of the 1150-hectare tailings storage facility has been studied in Siilinjärvi for a long time. The aim has been to use the same tailings area footprint, without any new land purchases or major dam increases. An important part of the process has been to study the possibilities for using new technologies, especially thickened tailings technology (Ruhanen, 2014)."

ABSTRACT: The development and evolution of the gravity recoverable gold (GRG) test procedure at McGill University is reviewed in this paper. Since the late 1980s, the research group led by the late Professor André Robert Laplante at McGill University has undertaken fundamental studies and applied research of the Knelson concentrator to develop a sustainable method of estimating GRG. Historically, a concept of “free gold” was used, and it was de?ned as the gold that could be separated and recovered from gold ore by amalgamation. Due to health and safety hazards, the practical use of amalgamation has declined. Around 1994, a methodology using a 3-in Knelson concentrator to measure gravity recoverable gold was established at McGill University. As a result of more than 10 years of improvement and optimization, this technique has become a standard method of evaluating GRG for gold ores, gold plant streams and platinum group metals. By 2006, about 200 GRG tests were carried out at McGill University on ores from all over the world. Recently, a modi?ed version of the GRG test (a simpli?ed test) was developed to provide a quick and rough estimate of the GRG in a sample; this simpli?ed test has the advantage of reduced mass, processing time and cost. To recognize and honour the contributions made by the late Professor Laplante towards the establishment of a standard test procedure for assessing gravity recovery potential, the authors propose that the GRG test be named after Laplante.

"To obtain large-sized billets with fine grains and homogeneous elements distribution, uniform direct chill (UDC) casting process, based on annular electromagnetic stirring coupling with intercooling, was employed to produce 7055 alloy billets with a size of F584 mm in this study. The results indicated that there were the coupled effects of annular electromagnetic stirring and intercooling on grain refinement and element homogenization, and also the billets produced by the UDC casting process showed excellent hot workability in comparison to the normal direct chill casting process.INTRODUCTION The high solute 7055 aluminium alloy has a wonderful combination of high specific strength and hardness, good resistance to stress corrosion cracking and high fracture toughness, which is very useful in aerospace application (Yan et al., 2013; Mondal & Mukhopadhyay, 2005). The production of large-sized 7055 alloy billets with high quality is the basic condition for the subsequent application of 7055 alloy to the aircraft. Inhomogeneous microstructures and performances of 7055 billets result from the high alloying element content and the inhomogeneous cooling condition in different regions of billets during the conventional direct chill casting (Paramatmuni et al., 2004; Lalpoor et al., 2011), which will bring bad influence to processing property, functional performance and utilization rate of materials. To alleviate segregation and obtain fine and uniform grains, some effective treatment methods were proposed including electromagnetic stirring (EMS) (Vives, 1989), ultrasonic vibrating (Zhang et al., 2011) and melt conditioning (Fan et al., 2013), on the melt to obtain fine and uniform grains. However, these methods could not effectively decrease the large temperature difference between central and periphery parts of the billet, because the solidification mainly depends on outside cooling including mould cooling and water spraying cooling. To change the heat extraction pattern of the billet functioned solely from the outer surface, based on annular electromagnetic stirring (A-EMS) invented by Xu et al. (2010), Luo et al. (2017) proposed uniform direct chill (UDC) casting coupling A-EMS with intercooling in the direct chill (DC) casting process. An in-mold cooler was inserted to the melt sump, and thus the alloy melt temperature and concentration at solidification front become more uniform."

"A series of new type collectors a-bromo-saturated fatty acids, CH3(CH2)5CHBrCOOH (a-BHA), CH3(CH2)7CHBrCOOH (a-BDA), CH3(CH2)9CHBrCOOH (a-BLA), CH3(CH2)11CHBrCOOH (a-BMA) were synthesized from saturated fatty acids and bromine by solvent-free method (Hell-Volhard-Zelinski reaction) in laboratory. The micro-flotation tests of quartz mineral were conducted at a relatively low temperature of 15 °C. The adsorption mechanism of such collectors on quartz mineral surface were established by zeta potential measurements, in conjunction with the results of quartz micro-flotation tests. The flotation results showed that the collecting ability is in the order of a-BMA > a-BLA > a-BDA > a-BHA for the flotation of quartz mineral, which also demonstrating that the a-bromo-saturated fatty acids (a-BFAs) are new selective collectors for reverse flotation to remove quartz mineral from iron ores at a relatively low temperature.INTRODUCTIONThe requirement of higher pulp temperature to maintain the activity of fatty acid anionic collectors which have been widely applied in technological process of iron ores reverse flotation lead to a great deal of energy consumption.The purpose of this paper is to synthesize a new modified collector with carbon chains from eight to fourteen atoms, with strong electronegativity bromine atom introduced into a-carbon position to improve the activity and solubility of the reagent so that it can be adopted at a comparatively low pulp temperature. The collecting performances of these new collectors on quartz surface were studied, and the structure - properties were discussed in light of zeta potential measurements and quantum chemistry calculations."

Abstract - The West Meliadine area is underlain by structurally interleaved panels of mafic and minor ultramafic metavolcanic rocks and metasedimentary rocks that occur along the northern margin of the Neoarchean Rankin Inlet greenstone belt. Three structural and metamorphic domains are recognized: (1) the easterly Wesmeg domain; (2) the central Barracuda-Ridge domain; and (3) the westerly Peter Lake domain. The Wesmeg domain is characterized by a series of southeast-trending, north-dipping, foliation-parallel panels of greenschist facies mafic metavolcanic and metasedimentary rocks. The Barracuda-Ridge domain is comprised of greenschist to amphibolite facies mafic metavolcanic rocks that define an east-northeast-trending structural grain. The Peter Lake domain consists of amphibolite facies mafic metavolcanic rocks and minor metasedimentary rocks intruded by a monzonite pluton. West Meliadine hosts the economically significant Wesmeg gold deposits, as well as other important gold showings across the Barracuda-Ridge and Peter Lake domains. The geological setting of the Wesmeg gold deposits resembles that of a break or fault zone. The Pyke Break is a major geophysical discontinuity (>65-km strike length) and is the first-order structural control on gold mineralization at West Meliadine. It is several kilometers wide and characterized by polyphase deformation and shear zone development accompanied by lode-gold mineralization. In general, gold concentration is related to quartz and iron-carbonate veining, iron sulfides (mainly arsenopyrite and pyrrhotite), and accompanying silicate alteration minerals that overprint favorable chemical and structural traps late in the history of deformation.

The characteristics of coal bumps are analyzed based on the microseismic data from No.8935 workface in Xinzhouyao coal mine, Datong Mining Group. The geology of this workface is characterized by the thick sandstone roof and coal seam, both with relative higher stiffness and strength. In order to investigate the mechanism and precursors of coal bumps occurred in No.8935 workface, the locations of microseismic, the relationship of microseismic energy and frequency and the spectrum of microseismic signals are analyzed. The result shows that the coal bumps in No.8935 workface were mainly induced by the seismic caused by roof failure. The coal pillar near the goaf is more easily to bump. The statistics results indicate that the coal bumps were mainly occurred in the gate road near the pillar, less than 50m ahead of mining face and located in the hard roof adjacent with coal seam. Moreover, the frequency, energy, b-value and frequency spectrogram of microseismic events were found to decrease before coal bumps. It was found that the frequencies of the microseismic events before coal bumps mainly concentrate upon 5~60Hz. The sudden decreasing of frequency and increasing of amplitude of microseismic events can be regarded as a precursor of coal bumps.

LLOYDMINSTER is the centre of a well developed agricultural area, lying on the Alberta-Saskatchewan interprovincial boundary in Township Fifty. The surrounding country is gently undulating, without any notable topographic features, but twenty-two miles to the north the North Saskatchewan river, and thirty miles to the south the Battle river, have cut deep valleys. In the spring of 1934, a wild-cat well (Lloydminster Gas Company's No. 1 well) was successful in striking a large flow of gas at a depth o 1,974 ? feet. The gas was piped into the town, a short distance south, and Lloyd-minster became the first Saskatchewan town to be served with natural gas. Following this discovery, other wells were sunk and, up to the present, thirteen wells have been drilled m what is here designated the Lloydminster area. Ten of these wells are in Saskatchewan and three in Alberta. Seven were successful in obtaining gas, three oil, and three have been unsuccessful. The area tested by this drilling is about eight thousand acres, six thousand of which can be considered as proved gas or oil land. To the south and west of Lloydminster, in the Province of Alberta, there are several areas in which oil and gas have been discovered. The Wainwright field lies nearly fifty miles to the southwest; Battleview, where recently gas has been discovered, is thirty miles west-southwest; and the Ribstone area is about thirty miles south and a little west. At Ribstone, a number of wells were drilled some years ago and there is a small production of oil. The data relating to the wells in the Lloydminster area that are recorded in this paper are taken from the records of the several companies operating in the field. The names of these companies are given on the map and on the type stratigraphic section (Figures 1 and 2). The author wishes to record his appreciation to Mr. R. H. Shaw and Mr. 0. C. Yates, both of Lloyd-minster, for much valuable information; also to Mr. E. Swain, of the Department of Natural Resources, Regina, with whom the writer has visited the field on several occasions, and who, by his enthusiasm and encouragement, has done much to forward the development of the area. The well samples were examined at Ottawa by officers of the Borings Division of the Geological Survey of Canada, who also made the interpretations of the logs. NEPHELINE SYENITE is a feldspathic rock resembling granite in texture and hardness but it is white in colour and contains appreciable quantities of the mineral nepheline, the result of a silica deficiency. It is relatively common, with known occurrences in Russia, Scandinavia, India, Canada, United States, and other parts of the world. However, the particular deposit being mined at Nephton, Ontario, by American Nepheline Limited is unique in its remarkable uniformity and low content of iron bearing minerals, both qualities essential in a ceramic raw material. The orebody is a pear-shaped mass over five miles in length, up to a mile in width, rising in three prominent ridges as much as 300 feet above the surrounding lakestudded terrain. American Nepheline holdings, consisting of 2,200 acres, comprise some 85 per cent of the total mass.

Two important parameters for dynamic recrystallization can be derived from the changes in the strain hardening rate: the critical strain for initiation of dynamic recrystallization and the point of maximum softening. In this work, these values are determined from the flow stress-strain data obtained in continuous compression testing in the range 900-1100°C. The resulting strains are used to calculate a kinetic model of dynamic recrystallization for two materials: 304 austenitic stainless steel and a hypereutectoid plain carbon steel. The mechanical parameters used to define the proposed model are confirmed with quantitative metallographic analysis of the recrystallized microstructure.

Success in implementing new technology for metallurgical processes is not a foregone conclusion: This paper includes a survey of 23 new technology-based metallurgical plant start-ups, in which the authors have identified 7 successes, 9 difficult start-ups, and 7 failures. Success is defined not only as meeting the schedule and budget to the end of mechanical completion; the key goal is a fast ramp up to the full design production level, with minimum plant and equipment modifications required after start-up. This paper sets out the key factors that underlie achievement of a quick production ramp up curve, as determined from the authors' project experiences and a quantitative analysis of over twenty metallurgical plant start-ups, both pyrometallurgical and hydrometallurgical. Thorough test-work and pilot plants, plus appropriate scale-up to the full commercial plant, are key determinants of success in implementing new technology in metallurgical processes. Another critical factor is the number of new elements and their interactions. Project phasing is also particularly important for new technology projects, with appropriate review after each phase to develop a risk mitigation plan for the subsequent phase. New technology projects need committed champions to advance the project in the face of sceptics, but also require dispassionate and unbiased experts to ask the hard questions. As a project evolves, it is important to periodically question the appropriateness of assumptions, as well as to re-assess the relevance and completeness of data from test-work I pilot plants I industrial analogues. Sufficient human and financial resources are required to complete the often arduous implementation phase. During the ramp-up period, the operation generates little positive cash flow; however, significant expertise and capital are required for the de-bottlenecking projects that are often necessary to reach the plant's design output level.

Infrared spectroscopic data collected using HyloggerTM technology is being used to assess the mineral composition of Archean iron ore bedrock and Cenozoic detrital units in Western Australia’s Pilbara region. Analysis of infrared spectra enables quantification of: (1) composite iron mineralogy, (2) composite clay mineralogy, (3) hydrous silicates and (4) carbonate mineral abundances. Stratigraphic and rock mass unit logging of core has identified several detrital and bedrock units recognisable across the Pilbara. However, due to alteration related to mineralisation, weathering and later stage precipitate overprinting, it can often be difficult to assess the detrital-bedrock boundary and the occurrences of specific geotechnical units in the detritals and bedrock, particularly when using non-core drilling techniques and traditional geochemical assays. Infrared spectroscopic data collected concurrently on core from several sites has shown distinct correlation against existing unit subdivisions and associated geochemical parameters. Where infrared spectroscopic data have also been collected on rock chips recovered from reverse circulation infill drilling, these correlations allow robust geological and geotechnical models to be developed based on the typical mineralogical-geochemical signatures. The geotechnical sub-units identified in core can be readily distinguished using the various iron and clay minerals captured by the HyloggerTM technology as opposed to total iron, potassium, and alumina captured by geochemical assays. Further, some of the minerals targeted by infrared spectroscopic analysis (eg gibbsite, white mica, vitreous goethite) and their ubiquitous presence as the products of weathering, assist in recognition of various ancient weathering surfaces and help to define the origin of the material, whether bedrock or detrital. Overall, HyLogging of core and chips allows important mineralogy focussed data to be captured at minimal additional financial outlay. Correlations against geochemical unit identifiers are robust both within deposits and between deposits. Significant improvements in the confidence of geological and geotechnical models are attained.

Slot raises are relief holes within a stope in longhole stoping methods, designed to provide a free face that facilitates the expansion of the blasted rock during blasting, ultimately achieving the desired fragmentation. Various methods are employed to produce these slot raises, like conventional drop raise drilling, raisebore & V30 drilling. However, slot drilling is generally characterized by high costs and limitations in precision, resulting in unplanned ore losses and dilution. This paper introduces a novel alternative to slot drilling referred to as the "paste slot", designed specifically for paste backfill operations in underground mining. This new method emphasizes considerations in cured paste strength, paste wall removal, and stope dimensions and employs modified drop raises or dumped rings to optimize blast gas effectiveness and material flow. The paste slot method eliminates the need for reamers and reduces the total slot drill meters an average from 650m to only 300m for narrow stopes (3-4m wide). This significantly reduces the stope cycle time, leading to substantial cost savings and increased productivity. This new method was successfully implemented at the underground mines in Canada and Australia, resulting in a 20% reduction in stope cycle time and cost savings of 53,000 USD per slot compared to the conventional slot. This paper discusses the design and execution strategy of the paste slot method in underground paste backfill operations. It highlights the advantages of the method, shares operational insights gained during implementation, and showcases its potential applicability to other mines across Canada and globally.

"Curtin University’s Gold Technology Group has developed an online CIP/CIL simulation model called SIMCIL which has been used since 1999 to model and simulate industrial leach-adsorption circuits. Recently the model has been upgraded to include an integrated liberation-leach modelling (ILLM) approach which can be used to evaluate the impact of various process parameters (such as grind size, bleed to gravity etc.) and circuit configurations on leach-adsorption circuit behaviour and overall plant gold recovery. A new time-efficient ore characterisation methodology has been researched and developed to provide the required liberation-leach data used in the ILLM approach, which is implemented online for the modelling of gold operations. "The new H-W orebody was evaluated by considering its production at three technically feasible rates. Capital and operating costs were estimated f or each rate and production sequences were established using mining cutoff limits generated by an ore value algorithm. The viability of the project was then examined by conducting economic and financial analyses of each of the three production cases under various world economic scenarios. These analyses employing standard profitability measures demonstrated all three cases would be economically viable; the production case which maximized the Net Present Value of the project was the one selected for development and production.IntroductionWestmin Resources Limited and its predecessor company, Western Mines Ltd., has been continuously carrying out mining operations near Myra Falls in Central Vancouver Island since December 1966. The mining operation, whose current production rate is approximately 830 tonnes / day (t/d), based on ore derived from the Myra and Lynx Mines, produces copper, lead and zinc concentrates which contain significant quantities of gold and silver in addition to the base metals.In the late 1970s, with Lynx and Myra ore reserves slipping to unacceptably low levels, a major increase in mine-site exploration was initiated, with outside geological staff brought in to complement the efforts of the mine's geological staff. By the end of 1979, this program had resulted in the discovery of a significant new orebody on a deeper horizon some 300 metres below the one which hosts the Lynx and Myra deposits. Throughout the period 1980-1982, major drilling was carried out to evaluate the new H-W deposit and by the end of 1982, drill-indicated mineral inventory for the deposit compared with Myra, Lynx and Price ore reserves was as shown in Table I. During this same three-year period, a major development and evaluation program was underway comprising environmental monitoring and control programs, shaft sinking test mining, bulk sampling and mill testing, rock mechanics studies and preparation of the Stage I and II reports for the multidisciplinary Environmental Land Use Committee (ELUC).As a result of the preliminary engineering work and exploration drilling, it became rapidly apparent that the H-W deposit could support a considerably higher production rate than the current one. Accordingly, engineering studies including scheduling of development and production as well as capital and operating cost estimates, were focused on three possible production rates: 1350, 1800 and 2700 t/d. Our task was to select the optimum one of these three rates."

"An experimental study was carried out to evaluate the performance of column flotation versus conventional flotation for the recovery of molybdenite from a Newfoundland ore. The objective was to verify the claims made by the inventors of the flotation column, Messrs. Pierre Boutin and Remi Tremblay, that their apparatus reduces the entrainment of fine gangue and other mineral impurities in the froth product. The research included a factorially designed series of tests to determine satisfactory operating conditions of the column. These provided a basis for comparative flotation tests with column and Denver cells. In the course of the work, the action of a few depressants was studied. Results indicated greater selectivity in the column and reduced reagent consumption."

"The lead concentrate produced from the volcanogenic base metal ore of Brunswick Mining and Smelting in New Brunswick contains major to trace amounts of iron, zinc, cadmium, arsenic, antimony, copper, silver, selenium, tellurium, bismuth, sulphur, tin, indium, mercury and manganese as impurities. When the concentrate is sintered some of these impurities enter a variety of oxide phases, whereas others precipitate as metals. In the lead blast furnace the oxide phases decompose and the impurities recombine 10 form new phases, most are eventually discharged to the slag. The metals of the sinter remain as metals in the lead blast furnace where even more are produced, and are discharged largely with the lead bullion,IntroductionMany lead concentrates are produced from volcanogenic base metal ores . Such ores contain a wide variety of trace minerals and trace elements , therefore, concentrate s obtained from them will contain the trace elements as impurities . The impurities in the lead concentrate from one such ore, the Brunswick No. 12 deposit of Brunswick Mining and Smelting Corporation (BM S) in the Bathurst area in New Brunswick , were studied as pan of a larger investigation that was conducted to determine the extent of chemical reactions of the sinter within the lead blast furnace(1,2) The lead concentrate was investigated to identify the host mineral s for the impurities, the lead sinter was studied to identify the host phases, and frozen products from different depths within the BMS blast furnace at Belledune, New Brunswick were studied to determine the behaviour of the impurities.T he investigation was performed by pre pa ring polished sections o f the samples and studying them with a reflecting microscope, a scanning electron microscope (SE M) equipped with a Kevex energy dispersive X-ra y analysis system, a microprobe, and a Quantimet 720 image analyzer. The samples were also analyzed by X-ray diffractometer, and individual grains were analyzed by the Debye-Scherrer X-ray powder film method."
