Sociedad Minera Cerro Verde S.A.A leaches secondary copper sulfides. In recent years, the mine has introduced innovations that have improved the management of mineral crushing, agglomeration, curing, and leaching. The crushing plant, for example, uses the concepts of degree of balance and percentage of time in an operationally balanced state which, displayed in real time, facilitate more intensive and uniform utilization of the crushers. High agglomerate quality is ensured with the correct dose of moisture, which is adjusted to the changing characteristics of the mineral through the use of electrical conductivity measurements. The amount of acid used for curing the agglomerate is also adjusted by using quality control information. Finally, the stockpile irrigation regime is managed using the criteria established by the "Lixiviant Request Rate", which optimizes the addition of leaching solution, creating such benefits as faster recovery, and reduced acid and energy consumption.

This paper deals with an occurrence of radium ore near Wilberforce, Haliburton county, Ontario, upon which development work has recently been undertaken and which seems more likely to prove of commercial grade than any other deposit' of radioactive minerals hitherto found in Canada. This occurrence is sometimes called the Richardson property, after Mr. W. M. Richardson, the discoverer, and will be so referred to in the present paper. Occurrences of radioactive minerals are not uncommon in eastern Canada, and a number are recorded in the literature. The earliest of such references is probably that in Geology of Canada, 1863, where is mentioned an occurrence of uraninite at Mamainse, on the east shore of lake Superior. The mineral was first described by J. L. Leconte, in 1847, under the name of coracite, and was said to occur in a two-inch vein at the contact of trap and syenite. Search for this locality in recent years has proved unsuccessful. Obalski, in 1894, mentions (1) the occurrence of uraninite at a mica mine near Murray Bay, Que. In 1903, Obalski records (2) tests made on this uraninite by Rutherford and the Curies and the determination in it of the then newly-discovered element radium. In 1901, he mentions (3) the occurrence of uraninite at the Villeneuve mica mine, on the Lievre river, and of samarskite at the Maisonneuve mica mine, in Berthier county.

Slag fuming has remained a key process for the recovery of Zn, Pb, and minor elements in the integrated flow sheet at Teck Cominco's Trail Operations for more than 75 years. Since the start-up of the KIVCETTM process and the #3 slag fuming furnace in 1997, a range of process intensification projects have been completed to improve metals recoveries and throughput based on improved process control, mechanical modifications, and, most recently, the implementation of oxygen enrichment of the blast air. This latter project, initially named 'nitrogen depletion' and now 'nitrogen oxygen performance enhancement' (NOPE), is the primary focus of this paper. NOPE reduces the amount of heat required to heat the inert nitrogen gas, and therefore more of the energy input can be used for reduction. It also frees up boiler capacity because the inert nitrogen gas does not then have to be cooled down. A dynamic METSIMTM model was developed to determine the opportunities to improve the process capacity and heat balance to both assist with justifying the project and to verify the observed furnace behaviour. Several process safety management issues were also addressed and a few key minor mechanical modifications were made to allow the project to proceed to commercial implementation at 25% blast air oxygen enrichment. Short term plant trials have confirmed the model predictions. The first three months of a long term, continuous trial showed a 6% increase in zinc fuming rate from average furnace performance despite the implementation of a KIVCETTM fluxing change to assist with minor element recovery that was expected to negatively impact the zinc fuming rate by 3 to 5%. This encouraging result is also in line with the model predictions.

"As part of an over-all arsenic management strategy, Inco has developed a novel process that converts a by-product high moisture copper/arsenic sulphide precipitate into a crystalline copper arsenate suitable for the manufacture of wood preservation chemicals.The copper/arsenic sulphide precipitate is atmospherically leached with oxygen and sulphuric acid, producing a crude (blue) copper arsenate precipitate, elemental sulphur, and a copper and nickel containing solution. The blue copper arsenate is dissolved with sulphuric acid, the molar Cu/As ratio is raised to 2, and a crystalline copper arsenate (olivenite) is precipitated by the addition of sodium carbonate. Dissolved copper is recovered using metallic nickel (or matte) and elemental sulphur, to produce a low-moisture (low-arsenic) precipitate suitable for standard nickel-copper processing.The process was successfully piloted at Inco's Manitoba Division between September 1990 and June 1991. The copper arsenate product typically analyzed 43% Cu and 25% As, and the moisture content was about 10%."

In March 2003, Phelps Dodge started up an innovative pressure leach facility for processing copper concentrates at the Bagdad mine in Arizona. This paper describes the development of the concentrate leaching plant at Bagdad and the operational results from start up to present. Optimization efforts and an approach to mineralogical modeling of the concentrate to calculate oxygen utilization are also presented.

Introduction The preparation of the following paper has been undertaken in the belief that a description of the development methods and equipment used at Lake Shore, at the present time, will prove of general ? interest. Working depths of nearly a mile and a half in shaft sinking and of more than one mile for stoping operations have imposed problems not encountered at shallower horizons. Among the problems contributing to the difficulty of mining at extreme depths might be mentioned: Rock pressures Ventilation Hoisting Shorter work period at the face Geological considerations In the main, the effects of these factors add to the difficulty of mining at depth, but it is not entirely true to say that each must necessarily become more pronounced as mining operations proceed to greater depths. Corrective measures may, in some cases, retard the effect and in others may even relieve some of the difficulty. It is proposed here to discuss these features in the light of the experience at Lake Shore, and to present, in some detail, the current practice in shaft sinking and in driving ore and waste passes, raises, drifts and cross-cuts.

THE purpose of this paper is to discuss the practical aspects of locating gravel deposits and of establishing efficient, portable concrete aggregate beneficiation plants for use on construction projects where limited amounts of high-quality gravel and sand are required. Certain projects are listed, in order to demonstrate the wide variety of problems encountered. Routledge Gravel Contractors Limited, North Vancouver, have supplied concrete aggregate for construction projects in British Colum-bia since 1957. In tl1at year, in sup-plying aggregate for a small project at a site on the northern coast of British Columbia, our quote was as follows: Concrete aggregate to specifications, f.o.b. scow, North Vancouver$ 1.75 per cu. yd. Scowing charges to site. $16.00 per cu. yd. At that time, our company realized that more attractive quotations could be submitted if local gravel was utilized where available. "AngloGold Ashanti Brasil, with assistance from Sherritt International Corporation, has recently commissioned a new autoclave for the pressure oxidation of refractory gold feeds at their Corrego do Sítio operation in Brazil. Design of the new plant, including feed acidulation, pressure oxidation, oxidized solids washing and solution neutralization circuits, was based on the results of test work conducted by Sherritt at their pilot plant in Fort Saskatchewan, Alberta. This paper describes the results of the pilot plant study as well as highlights of the design exercise.INTRODUCTIONAngloGold Ashanti Brasil (AGA Brasil) has recently commissioned a refractory gold pressure oxidation plant at the site of the original São Bento operation in Brazil. The design of the São Bento pressure oxidation facility was based on Sherritt technology; Sherritt carried out the original process development test work in the mid-1980s, provided a process design package and detailed specifications for critical pressure oxidation equipment and participated in the training of operators and commissioning of the plant. The São Bento plant was operated between 1986 and 2007, when the original ore body was exhausted (Silva et al., 2004). AGA Brasil purchased the facility from Eldorado Gold in 2008, with the intent of refurbishing the plant to process refractory gold concentrates produced from the nearby Córrego do Sítio mining area.Sherritt International Corporation has a long history in the development and application of commercial pressure oxidation and pressure leaching processes. Sherritt’s development of technology for the pressure oxidation of refractory gold ores and concentrates commenced in the 1980s in collaboration with Homestake for application at the McLaughlin project in California. This was followed by several commercial applications in Canada, Papua New Guinea and Brazil (Berezowsky et al., 1991). More than thirty pilot plant campaigns investigating the pressure oxidation of refractory gold ores or concentrates have been conducted by Sherritt since the 1980s, and projects with Sherritt contributions to the process development studies and/or engineering design account for about half of the commercial plants that have operated to date with this type of process (Collins et al., 2011a; 2011b)."

"Huge amounts of air pollution scrubber sludge have been generated during ferromanganese production using blast furnace. These residues have been historically deposited in ponds near steel making plants. They are very rich in zinc, manganese and lead (5 to 40 %) and also contain aluminum and iron. Considering the market value of these metals, brownfield sites can now be used as secondary resources. These ponds also have to be cleaned up to meet the environmental regulations.We have developed a hydrometallurgical process to recover Zn, Mn and Pb in order to produce valuable compounds of Mn and Zn and recover the final Pb residue by pyrometallurgy. The Zn and Mn compounds need to be pure enough to be economically valuable. Batch laboratory tests were carried out to determine suitable selective leaching conditions. The investigated operating conditions were acid concentration, pulp density and temperature. Optimal conditions to maximize zinc extraction (100 %) and manganese extraction (95.9 %) were found using sulfuric acid and sodium metabisulfide. The final residue contained 14.8 to 23.8 % of Pb. Then, Zn was recovered in the form of ZnO or ZnS by precipitation and Zn metal by electrowinning, while Mn was recovered as MnCO3 with a fairly acceptable concentration of impurities.INTRODUCTIONFerromanganese has been produced by pyrometallurgy in much of Western Europe for centuries. Use of wet scrubber to remove pollutant and dust particles from gas stream was common for most of these operations. Those residues contain high concentration of Zn, Mn and Pb. They have been left to decant in settling ponds installed close to the steel production plants. They now constitute heavily contaminated artificial soils. Those sludges are so contaminated with Zn, Mn and Pb that they can be used for metal production. Currently, no method is available to decontaminate these residues and recover Zn, Mn and Pb. Therefore, an approach considering these brownfield sites as secondary resource is in development. Doing so would achieve two goals, decontaminate the site and produce metals.. "In the Maritimes, there are twelve coal areas. From east to west, these include the Sydney coal field, the St. Rose - Chimney Corner, Inverness, Mabou, Port Hood, Pictou, Colchester - Debert, Springhill, Joggins - Chignecto, Beersville, Lake Stream, and Minto. The first eight are in Nova Scotia while the remaining four are in New Brunswick.In all these areas, the coal was formed during the Carboniferous period, which existed some 300 million years ago. However, within this period not all coal formation took place during the same time. There were three main intervals, which occurred at the time that the Riversdale, Cumberland and Pictou groups were laid down (Hacquebard, 1970). The oldest coals are those of the Riversdale Group. These coals were of rather limited extent, and only a few mineable seams are present, particularly at St. Rose -Chimney Corner and Port Hood. From these two areas only 2 M tons have been extracted, and 'measured' resources of 7 and 9 M tons respectively remain. The Cumberland Group coals are confined to Cumberland County and include the coals of Springhill and Joggins River Herbert -Chignecto. Some 43 M tons have been removed and only 7 M tons of 'measured' coal remain, with an addit10nal 39 M tons of 'inferred' resources. However, there are additional resources at Springhill, which will be discussed in more detail in a later section. The coals of the Pictou Group are the youngest and the most abundant, both in actual number of seams and in regional distnbution. These coals were formed during the Westphalian C and D, a time during which the main coal deposition in Europe also took place. Here belong the coals of the Sydney, Inverness, Mabou, Pictou, Debert, Beersville, Lake Stream and Minto fields. Their total production amounted to 469 M tons or 91 % of the Maritime total of 514 M tons. The remaining resources of all Pictou Group coals have been calculated at 254 M tons of 'measured' coal and 949 M tons of 'inferred' coal. As can readily be seen, the bulk of both past production and remaining resources occur in the Sydney coal field. The Sydney figures represent 73% of total production, and 87% of total 'demonstrated' resources in the Maritime Provinces. Next to Sydney, the Pictou coal field has been the greatest producer, with 59 M tons; it also has the second largest 'measured' resources, amounting to 25 M tons. However in terms of 'inferred' coal resources, the Mabou coal field, ~ith 140 M tons, ranks second to Sydney."

"A review of historic operating practices of the heap leach pads at the Los Filos Mine, Mexico, revealed periods of restricted cyanide addition, reduced leach time, and insufficient irrigation flow. These issues all led to the buildup of partially leached recoverable gold inventory within the leach pads. Drawing down this inventory represented an opportunity to bring value forward. This paper outlines the strategic initiatives which were implemented as efforts to accelerate the inventory drawdown, including geophysical mapping and pressure injection.INTRODUCTION Los Filos is a heap-leach operation located in the Guerrero gold belt in southern Mexico. Operational and hydraulic challenges at the Los Filos Mine have led to a buildup of gold in inventory within the leach pads. Operationally, periods of restricted reagent addition, reduced leach time, and insufficient irrigation flow have compounded over the last eight years, and resulted in significant inventory growth. Hydraulically, the leach pad has issues with low permeability and solution channeling due to the fines and clay content of the ore. The leach pad is storing high-grade pregnant leach solution (PLS) as perched aquifers above areas that are compacted and difficult to drain. These operational and hydraulic challenges made it particularly difficult to spatially predict the precise locations of the inventory build-up. Fortunately, the challenges at Los Filos are not unique to the mine, and others have taken steps elsewhere to reduce metal inventory through a program that targets areas for inventory drawdown. For example, Ghorbani et al. (2016) noted that a method of injecting barren reagent solutions, applied directly to specific areas of a leach pad to reduce inventory, was presented by Wan and Brierley (1997) and Wan (1997). Seal (2004; 2007), Seal and Jung (2005), and Seal et al. (2012) have put the injection methodology into practice in Nevada and Colorado gold mines with a technology called Hydro-Jex®. The goal of Hydro-Jex has been to supply reagents at a high pressure over a short duration, followed by periodical low pressure rinse periods to remove leached metal and resupply fresh reagent to the ore."

"The gently-dipping Devonian dolomite beds south of Great Slave lake in northern Canada are nearly every-where concealed by a cover of glacial drift and muskeg. Nevertheless, in 1898 or earlier, four small outcropping areas of dolomite, richly mineralized with lead and zinc sulphides, were discovered. Exploration work performed here up to the end of 1930, included intensive trenching and drilling of the showings, together with mapping and wide-spaced drilling in the surrounding region. This work proved that the discoveries are isolated pockets of mineralization much too small to be commercially valuable by themselves. No evidence of orebodies elsewhere was reported.Meanwhile, mapping by the G.S.C. in the Shield far to the east disclosed major Precambrian faults, some of which can be projected southwesterly (under a cover of Paleozoic sediments) to the vicinity of Pine Point. During the period from 1940 to 1947, consideration was given, by The Consolidated Mining and Smelting Company Ltd., to evidence of a theoretical possibility that, although apparently dormant in Paleozoic times, these faults may have provided a structural control and a source of ore-bearing solutions in some post-Devonian period. From this, it was postulated that the breaks might have created, in the overlying dolomite, a linear array of orebodies concealed by overburden but lying in a belt of considerable length and in a position predictable within practical limits. A program of drilling designed to test and exploit this specific concept was conducted from 1948 to 1955.he drilling within the new, theoretically-defined search area resulted in the discovery of many lead-zinc ore-bodies, none of which was exposed at the surface. Some of these are large and (as indicated by 1965 production records) very rich. They are situated 1 to several miles distant from, and apparently not connected to, the earlier-known surface discoveries. The drilling also disclosed that the ore, which consists of disseminated sphalerite and galena replacements together with colloform sphalerite and coarse galena cavity fillings, occurs mainly at certain stratigraphic horizons within a large, coarsely-recrystallized dolomite barrier reef. Considerable fracturing and folding was found. It has been suggested that reef development was influenced by post-Precambrian tectonic movements associated with the old faults in the basement complex. The ore may have been deposited by solutions moving from distant sources to favourable structural and chemical environments in or related to the reef.In more recent exploration performed in the course of preparing for mining production, the rate of ore discovery within the same general geological context has been greatly accelerated by the use of new geophysical techniques and drilling equipment. Reserves of 21.5 million tons, averaging 4 per cent lead and 7.2 per cent zinc, were reported in 1965, and production from open pits at the rate of approximately 248,000 tons of concentrates per year is in progress"

"Totten Mine return air raise was designed with two parallel fans equipped with silencers to reduce the noise emitted from the outlets into the environment. As development and production of the mine progressed through the past years, the silencer system needed to be upgraded, and additional maintenance strategies have been necessary to meet the regulatory noise limits enforced by the province of Ontario. The current mine plan will require the fans to reach the upper limit of their capacity by Q1 2019. To achieve this operational target, additional silencing capability has been required and Totten Mine has explored alternatives to further extend the noise silencing capacity available considering the current constraints at the mine site. The alternatives included a new silencer baffle design and a new layout that have allowed doubling the length of the silencer system. Using acoustic measurement data collected on several occasions, this paper presents and discusses the performance of the various silencing systems which have been installed on the return air fans at Totten Mine.INTRODUCTION Vale Canada Limited’s Totten Mine is a base metal, underground mine extracting nickel and copper, situated in the Sudbury Basin of Ontario. The mine initiated operations at the end of 2013, and is equipped with two main return air fans and two main fresh air fans located on surface. Both fresh air and return air fans are set in a parallel arrangement to operate as integrated units and are equipped with variable frequency drives (VFDs) to allow for the remote modification of their operating set point, usually between 600 to 880 rpm, depending on the mine’s requirements. The main return air raise (RAR) fans are also equipped with dissipative baffle silencers to attenuate the noise emitted to the environment. Approximately four years ago, acoustical measurements conducted to verify compliance with the applicable regulatory criteria, and respond to noise concerns from neighboring residents, concluded that the sound emissions of the main return air raise exceeded the noise design parameters. The acoustic tones of the fans were audible offsite, at a residential location, approximately 9 km northeast of the mine site. The elevated sound levels and offsite audibility was due to degradation of the original discharge silencers from moisture and particulate being drawn from underground workings and passing through the silencer baffles. The audibility was also due to an outlet directivity pattern which directed noise towards the residential location."

The demand drivers for the Indian Iron & Steel industry are increase in the activities of the manufacturing industry and infrastructure development. Indian Iron & Steel industry with its strong forward and backward linkages contributes significantly to overall growth and development of the economy. The industry today directly contributes 2% of India?s Gross Domestic Product and its weightage in the official Index of Industrial Production (IIP) is 6.2%. Manganese is a main ingredient for production of steel. Almost 90% manganese is being utilized by the steel industry worldwide. Globally, there is no substitute for manganese as on date. There is huge gap between demand and production of manganese ore in the country. To meet this demand gap and to support for growth of national economy, MOIL Limited (formerly Manganese Ore India Limited), a Government Enterprises, producing annually around 1.1 million tonnes (mt) of manganese ore and value added products, has geared up with various infrastructural activities to increase the present production capacity of 1.1?1.5 mt in 2016?2017 and 2.2 mt in 2020?2021. The paper deals with the technological improvements and infrastructural development activities of MOIL; this will help MOIL to become the market leader in manganese ore production globally in the coming years.

Many successful actions are required to bring a profitable extractive metallurgical operation into production. Competent process development performed within the project development schedule increases the chances of obtaining project financing and decreases the risk of engineering design errors being built into the commercial plant. The general sequence of steps in process development is well known: technology review, desktop studies, scoping studies, prefeasibility, and so on, with an increasing requirement for experimental evidence as the studies advance. This paper suggests principles for guiding process development work so that the efforts stay on track toward a smooth startup and a profitable commercial operation. It emphasizes closely aligning the research with the corporate goals of the mining company management, understanding the mineralogy and variability in the deposit, and guiding by flowsheet and material balance. Examples of hydrometallurgical process development leading to the early use of solvent extraction in the mining industry are given.

This paper focuses on the dissolution of various Manganese based compact additions into liquid Magnesium. The experimental procedure employed cylindrical compacts with various Manganese compositions. The various temperatures of the additions and the Magnesium bath were measured simultaneously during the immersion of the additions into Magnesium bath. The exothermicity level of these additions during their dissolution into liquid Magnesium was determined. The relation of the exothermicity level with the dissolution kinetics was also examined. In addition, SEM and EDX work was conducted for additions, which were withdrawn from the Magnesium bath. Finally, the recovery of these additions was estimated by taking samples from the Magnesium bath and conducting ICP analyses.

IT SEEMS particularly appropriate that, in celebrating its Diamond Anniversary, the Canadian Institute of Mining and Metalturgy chose our Province of British Columbia as its locale in this, our own Centennial year. I am sure your organization is justifiably proud of its achievements and growth over the period of its sixty years, and we, for our part, are justifiably proud of our growth over our first one hundred years. With your kind indulgence I pro-pose to talk to you today about our industrial growth, or, to put it an-other way, to highlight, historically, our progress in industrial development over the past one hundred years, and to take the liberty of speculating on what we may reasonably look forward to over the next few years. I am sure, Mr. Chairman, that some may have questioned the appropriateness of a talk on the industrial development of British Columbia to the Canadian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy. However, strangely enough, we in British Columbia owe our origin, constitution-ally and industrially, to the mining industry.
