"This paper was prepared for presentation at the 16th Canadian Mineral Processor's Annual Meeting, Ottawa, Ontario, Jan. 17 to Jan. 19, 1984.This paper gives an account of the development of treatment procedures for the differential flotation of refractory copper-zinc ores. Special references are made to the effectiveness of various zinc depressants and their combinations.Studies carried out on refractory copper-zinc ores demonstrated that conventional zinc depressants such as cyanide and zinc sulphate were not particularly effective when secondary copper minerals were present in the ore; the flotation activity of sphalerite was enhanced in the presence of cyanide.Among the various zinc depressants evaluated, the following depressant combinations were found most effective: Zn(OH) 2-S02 , 802-CaO, Na2S-Na2S03-S02, Na 2 S-S02 and Na 2S-S0rDS22.The practical application of any of these systems depends on the type of ore treated and other conditions such as pH, levels and points of collector and depressant additions.In this paper the effect of each depressant combination on different ores is described with reference to the selection of collectors."

"In this paper I will summarized the Falconbridge Nickel Mines1) energy costs and consumption data by fuel, process, cost centre and estimate our future costs and consumption patterns 2) detail the distribution of electrical energy 3) distribution of other forms of energy 4) describe present and planned energy conservation schemes; and 5) discuss economic justification and responsibility.There is sufficient material in this presentation to warrant several technical papers, however we felt that an overview of all our data and endeavors on the subject, would be most beneficial to those companies formulating energy conservation plans. The data briefly referred to in this slide presentation can be found in the technical paper.Over a five year period, total energy costs will vary between $63 and $94 MM depending on the future rate of energy cost escalation. An unrealistic 32% reduction in energy consumption is required to hold our own in the years ahead whereas an attainable 10°;, reduction in energy consumption would save $9 MM over this five year period.Total energy consumption, tonnage of ore delivered to plants and their ration BTU’s per ton of ore, are graphed for the years 1973 through 1976 and forecasted for the 1980’s. In 1974 we along with other member companies of the Mining Association, determined our purchased energy per ton consumption rate and set, as our goal, a 20% reduction by 1980. The dotted lines calculated from the energy audit, based on 1976 data shows there is a potential for a 10% increase in energy per ton. This could result from a lower than forecasted mining rate and operation of the new roasting, electric furnace and acid recovery facilities installed for environmental considerations at designed capacity."

The full economic evaluation of a mining project requires a block model that provides an estimate of the tons and grades of available resources. The model must be representative of the mineralization to be found at the time of mining for specified extraction periods and within acceptable error margins. In an operating mine, there may be a reasonable understanding and estimates of actual dilution and ore loss. This paper discusses the issue from the perspective of a project at a feasibility or preproduction level of development. Three types of dilution are discussed. Internal dilution (or change of support) is function of the spatial distribution of the mineralization and its relation to the operation?s selectivity. Geologic contact dilution is the unavoidable mixture at contacts or boundaries of material with different geologic characteristics, grades, or metallurgical performance. Operational planned and unplanned dilution should also be considered, sometimes incorporated by factoring the resource model, but more accurately by mimicking the grade control process. The resource estimation process always carries uncertainty, which is sometimes significant, and usually caused by several factors. These include quantity and quality of drill hole information; quantity and quality of geologic data; grade estimation methodology; dilution and mining recovery factors applied; etc. A key decision is to whether estimate as accurately as possible the in-situ geologic resource or to estimate the tons and grade of the material to be fed to the processing plant. The geologic modeling and grade estimation methods used are conditioned by this decision.

THE Workmen's Compensation Ace defines Silicosis as "a fibrocic condition of the lungs caused by the inhalation of silica dust sufficient co produce a lessened capacity for work". This fibrocic condition muse exhibit a specific appearance in the X-ray picture of the chest-an appearance which is not characteristic of several lung conditions which can cause lessened capacity for work and which are not due co silicosis. The layman is sufficiently familiar with this subject co know chat, as far as our knowledge goes, quartz is one of the principal objectionable factors in the production of this condition. He should also know that silicosis respects neither geographical nor industrial boundaries. It is as much a factor in some industrial processes (e.g. foundry work, sandblasting) as it is in mines handling ores containing quartz. Its development co a recognizable stage is usually a matter of many years. As yet, its cure is unknown. Its prevention is possible in varying degrees. The layman should also know that the development of fibrosis may be accelerated by breathing in, or living in, any atmosphere containing dust. Few normal adults, particularly those above a certain age, have clear lungs, and fibrosis in varying degrees is noted in the farmer, the steel worker, the clerk, and many others in varied occupations. It is not restricted to miners. Medical and industrial journals, and at times the press, are crammed with data pertaining to this subject, much of which is misinformation. This is particularly true of certain !laces where the preventive and compensation measures for the good o those earning their livelihood in an industry in which silicosis may be contracted are not so far advanced as in our own Province. A great many of these publishings are alarming to the layman. They leave him with the impression that he is taking his life in his hands if he elects to work underground, particularly in a gold mine-that he has at once sold his heritage of health and chat sooner or later he will succumb to the ravages of this ailment. Nothing could be farther from the truth. Actually, under present conditions in Ontario mines, a very small percentage of the men employed ever become impaired by silicosis to the extent chat they must withdraw from the industry. I propose to tell you briefly something of this subject as it affects our mines.

"1. Introduction Mattagami Lake Mines and Orchan Mines operate zinc copper mines adjacent to one another near Matagami, Quebec, situated approximately 300 kilometres north-east of Rouyn-Noranda. (Note: Mattagami Lake and Orchan are in the process of being absorbed by Noranda Mines and will become Noranda Mines-Matagami Division). Both concentrators began operations in late 1963.The Mattagami Lake concentrator is capable of treating up to 3,500 metric tons per day of massive sulphide ore with a mineral composition shown in TABLE 1. The Orchan concentrator consists of two separate circuits - the Orchan circuit with a capacity of 1,050 metric tons per day and a custom circuit with a capacity of 825 metric tons per day. Throughout its operation, Orchan has custom milled ore from several smaller deposits in the Matagami district."

Even without this ability, centrifugal concentrators are finding wideningapplications in precious metal concentration:1) PRIMARY GRINDING CIRCUITSEnhanced gravity concentration technology has largely replaced jigging as the technology of choice in precious metal grinding circuits worldwide. The benefits of using a centrifugal field to concentrate both coarse and fine gold are well documented but the placement of these machines within grinding circuits is still evolving. Conventional wisdom dictates that the best location for enhanced gravity machines is cyclone underflow on account of the elevated grade found in this stream when compared to cyclone feed or overflow. Plant operating experience at both large and small scale indicates that there are compelling arguments to place ENHANCED GRAVITY MACHINES on cyclone feed instead. In today?s evolving and globalized world, mining companies are being pressured to move beyond compliance towards long-term sustainability and sustainable development. Companies are expected to ?engage? communities without a clear understanding of ?how? to do this or to what end. This move, away from compliance, develops more of a focus on ?Community? Social Responsibility and sustainability. This shift leads to the development of world-class projects that provide sustainable development for people, reduce the incidence of costly delays, and promote good global citizenship for companies. The process of ?engaging? communities in mining project design and development leads to a stronger license to operate, and a reduction in social and political risk. To create this mutually beneficial relationship between communities and companies, communities must be ?engaged? in the project development and risk assessment processes as early as possible, preferably during the exploration or the concept phases. How to create this ?engagement? and manage this risk will be discussed.

"By any measure of common practice, Claude Resources' Seabee Gold Mine in Northern Saskatchewan should not now be operating. Not because reserves dwindled, or grade dropped or prices weakened or technical problems arose, but because a host of unimaginable other problems beset the project, any one of which would normally have led to the mine's failure.The success of the Seabee Mine, and it is extremely successful, is a story of the vision and blunt determination of two men. Neither is remarkable in his own right but each possesses the characteristics which were necessary to forge a highly productive and profitable narrow-vein mine in the midst of the most bizarre and unpredictable events which likely have ever beset a mine start-up in Canadian history.Together, Bill MacNeill, a Saskatchewan born, former bush pilot and Ray Gagnon, a big hearted, hard-fisted, miner with 44 years of experience in Canada's underground, built the Seabee Mine.They didn't accomplish this with brilliant geology, outstanding engineering or nimble corporate manouvering but rather a stubbornness and raw common sense which likely are all too often, ingredients missing in failed projects.The Seabee Mine is 100% owned by Claude Resources, a Saskatoon based company taken over by Bill MacNeill, its current chairman, in 1982. The company is listed on the TSE and produces 1200 barrels of oil per day and about 60,000 oz of gold per year. The company has a strong balance sheet, is very profitable and has 18 million shares outstanding.The Seabee property in Northern Saskatchewan started out like many other gold exploration properties in Canada.It was discovered in the l 940's by what is now Cominco, and, while highly regarded by that company the property sat largely dormant until acquired by Claude Resources in 1985.Claude did what most junior exploration companies would do and went looking for a company with a depth of expertise to joint venture the property.That company was Placer Development who could earn a 55% interest in the Seabee by delivering a bankable feasibility study on the Project by July 1988 and providing financing to production.Placer Development was an excellent company and spent over $8 million dollars on the Seabee over a 3 year period. Unfortunately for Claude Resources, Placer Development merged with Dorne Mines in 1987 and the new merged company, Placer Dome, established a minimum production threshold greater than the 50,000 oz per year which the Seabee appeared capable of supporting at that time. Placer Dome's request for an indefinite extension of the joint venture agreement to allow it to drill off a larger ore body was rejected by Claude Resources and the Seabee Property was returned to Claude in 1988."

BHP Billiton?s Cannington facility is a mining and minerals processing plant near Mt. Isa in Central Queensland, Australia, producing silver, lead and zinc. Mine ore is processed in a concentrator, which consists of grinding, flotation, thickening and filtration. Grinding is carried out in a fully autogenous (AG) mill. The mill operates in closed circuit with a pebble crusher. Throughput is approximately 380 tph. Cyclone overflow from the grinding circuit is fed into a flotation circuit for the recovery of lead, zinc and silver. Two concentrates are produced (lead and zinc), which are then thickened and filtered. The filtered concentrate is transported by road to a rail receiving station. From here the concentrate is railed to port in Townsville for shipment to the smelter. Matrikon and Engineers at BHP Billiton?s Cannington Mine have used ProcessACT to develop a flexible, nonlinear dynamic simulator for the grinding circuit to further enhance process understanding, as well to investigate various optimization strategies. An online charge volume estimator was also developed for the AG mill to aid in the understanding of overload conditions, which for the previous two months had been the primary contributor to downtime. The models were developed using a combination of first-principles modeling along with input-output dynamic responses. Examples of models used include: Morrell ?C? model for power and charge shoulder/toe angle prediction; Whiten?s mixing model for breakage and hold-up; Nageswararao cyclone model for predicting cut size; slurry recovery and water recovery. The composite model simulates system dynamics starting from the stockpile reclaim system and finishing at the feed for the flotation process. The objective was to provide a tool that assisted Cannington in understanding their Grinding Circuit and allowed them to develop and evaluate circuit optimization strategies. BHP Billiton Cannington Mine is now considering development of a Grinding Circuit Optimizer utilizing the models developed for the simulator.

"Decisions regarding mining method and subsequent choice of excavator must take into account the quantitative factors of productivity, availability, and capital, operating, and maintenance costs. Dig performance was compared between a hydraulic excavator (HE) and electric rope shovel (RS) of similar size class (i.e., use the same amount of energy to excavate a unit quantity of the same material from a mining face), focusing on the quantitative factors above. Machine performance, normalized to bucket capacity, was assessed as a function of hours of service (60,000 hours per machine). Results showed higher production rates for the HE of similar capacity and age. In general, the RS exhibited lower service cost per volume capacity, though it had higher capital cost. "A general computer program has been written to calculate material balances using multiple regression techniques. The program can handle metal assays or size distribution data obtained in multiple surveys of the flotation circuit. The ""best fit"" weight split is calculated between the input and product streams by minimizing the sum of squares of the residual errors using all of the available data. The program includes an assay adjustment feature in which each assay is recalculated to fit the ""best fit"" mass balance. Thus assay or sampling errors can be easily identified. Also the assays can be statistically weighted so the most precise measurements are given the most influence on the material balance. The computer output reports the mass balance, the actual and corrected assays, the percent metal recoveries and the significance and confidence levels for the weight splits.The program enables a rapid and accurate evaluation of mass balances from large masses of data obtained in multiple surveys around a flotation circuit. The effects of changing process variables can be quickly evaluated with statistical confidence."

"In this paper a review of the current status in recycling technologies for cathode ray tubes is given for both the glass and phosphors. Particular emphasis is placed on the opportunities for the recovery of the rare earth elements (REE) from the phosphor coatings. This is placed in the market context of alternative virgin sources and some of the advantages and disadvantages for REE waste recovery. Future opportunities are explored and also some experimental detail on a low cost leach system is presented. INTRODUCTIONThe disposal of cathode ray tube (CRT) based colour televisions has accelerated world-wide with the development of high definition flat screen panels. The total number of colour CRT televisions that have been sold in the United States in the mid-20th century is estimated to have been over 2 billion (U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, 2007), with high current rates of disposal. It is estimated that of the 20 million televisions annually discarded, 78% are send to landfill (Nnorom, Osibanjo & Ogwuegbu, 2011). However, this easily accessible item of electronics cannot only be turned into a valuable resource using the right recovery procedures, it can also prevent the substantial environmental contamination arising from improper disposal. In this review we focus on previous and current work performed on the recycling of CRT based televisions. Due to the increasing demand for rare earth metals, the main focus will be on the possibilities and challenges of recycling the fluorescent phosphor powders on the CRT’s panel glass.CATHODE RAY TUBE’S GLASS RECYCLINGConventional cathode ray tubes consist of three main parts, the panel, the funnel and the neck (Figure 1). To produce the different colours on the screen, the inside of the panel is coated with a matrix of hundreds of thousands of small phosphor dots. Each dot is one of three types of coloured phosphors, emitting either red, green or blue light. These emit light when excited by a beam of electrons generated by electron guns located in the neck of the CRT. These beams pass through holes in the shadow mask and excite the phosphor coating on the inside of the panel, to give light of variable RGB composition, see Figure 1."

A major focus of ground control research presently being conducted by the Geomechanics Group in the University of British Columbia Mining Engineering Department is to incorporate weak rock masses (RMR76 less than 50) into existing empirical design relationships. An emphasis is being placed upon the updated span design curve/critical span graph originally developed at UBC. The original database has been augmented by mapping of one mine in Montana and of several mines within the Carlin and Getchell Trends of Nevada. In addition, a neural network analysis has been performed and modifications of the span design curves at the lower RMR76 range have been made. The common factor in all the above mentioned mines is a weak back and/or walls. In most cases, the ore zone is the weakest rock unit and must be dealt with to safely extract the mineral bearing rock. This work attempts to provide rock mechanic tools that will enable a mine operator to make economic decisions that will also ensure a safe working environment.

"As part of the ongoing project development for the Tenke Fungurume Copper-Cobalt Project in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Phelps Dodge Corporation has examined methodologies for determining the size of grinding mills to support a 7000 mtpd operation. Six samples were tested by Hazen Research, Inc. (HRI) to obtain the JK parameters using the JK Drop Weight Test, standard Bond crushing, and rod mill work indices, abrasion indices and by Dawson for Bond Ball Mill Work Index tests using crushed feed, and Standard Autogenous Grinding Design (SAGDesign) Tests, patented by Outokumpu. (See reference 8 below).The comparison of these results gives context to how the various measurements relate to each other and how they can be used to obtain an accurate design for the grinding mills required for the Tenke Project. This is the first published direct comparison between JK Drop Weight, standard bond work indices, and SAGDesign test results. The SAGDesign test includes a SAG test followed by a Bond BM Wi test done on SAG ground material.INTRODUCTIONAfter the presentation of the paper “SAGDesign Testing – What It Is and Why It Works” at the recently concluded SAG 2006 Conference in Vancouver, a question was asked about how SAGDesign ore hardness measurements compared with other comminution tests, specifically the JK Drop Weight Test and the parameters that are derived from such testing. At that time it was noted that a paper was being prepared for the CMP Conference in January to show how various ore hardness measurements compare with each other when done on the same samples.This paper will therefore present the first such comparison using test results from the Phelps Dodge Tenke Fungurume Project where six composite samples were examined by the tests noted below. A seventh sample was tested at Dawson but not at other labs. The tests were done at four different laboratories listed below and included the tests shown."

Current applications of Gravity Concentration are briefly examined.The Paper details one approach to the development of a Gravity Concentration Plant, from laboratory and mineralogical techniques, through Pilot Plant testing, where applicable, to the actual design of the plant.INTRODUCTIONGravity Concentration, once the major method of concentrating minerals has, for much of the twentieth century been regarded, like the dodo bird, as obsolete. However, in more recent years it is enjoying something of a renaissance, and is once again being treated as a useful, economic alternative in the Mineral Processing Engineers' arsenal.An indication of the broad application of gravity concentration is the variety of minerals presently recovered. A list is given in Table 1; this list is not exhaustive."

Suncor Oil Sands employs delayed coking technology in converting bitumen into synthetic crude oil. Currently up to 10,000 m3 of delayed coke (coke) is produced per day as a byproduct of the upgrading process, of which up to 9,000 m3 per day is placed in dry storage on Lease 86/17. A review was completed to examine the case history of leachate potential experiments from the dry storage of coke and the environmental relevance of coke leachate studies conducted over the past decade. The review included an evaluation of the potential impacts of environmental conditions within the location of coke storage, including precipitation pH, as well as daily and annual ozone trends. Coke leachate potential has historically been characterized using standard leachate testing protocols (i.e., TLCP, SPLP) together with other studies that have employed strong acids and oxidizing agents in the extraction fluids. The present paper highlights prevailing conditions in the Athabasca Valley air-shed with emphasis given to ambient ozone (oxidizers), as well as precipitation pH and acid input deposition rates, and will demonstrate that TCLP / SPLP tests lack the intended environmental relevance relative to the conditions under which coke is stored.

"(Figure 1) Reagentized pulp enters into the column at about 1/4 of the distance from the top. Inside the column it meets with a downward flowing stream of water and with an upward flowing mass of air bubbles. Flotation takes place in this counter current system while at the same time fine gangue particles are washed off the froth before it reaches the overflow lip at the top of the column. The main operating features of the column flotation are as follows:a) No moving parts. Solids are kept in suspention not by an agitating action of a propeller but by settling down against the rising air bubbles.b) Wash water. Spray pipes are installed a few inches below the froth surface and deliver required volume of water. The purpose of this water is twofold:(i) it keeps in balance the flow of material through the column and(ii) it washes rising froth in the froth layer as well as removes unwanted fines attached to the bubbles at the lower flotation section. As a result the concentrate produced is of higher purity than in the conventional flotation. Column is characterized by very high up-grading. However, even temporary disruption of wash water supply results in a drastic drop of concentrate grate.c) Flow balance. (Figure 2) For the correct operation volume of the underflow (tail) is larger than that of the feed. The difference is made up by the wash water. This difference called bias is predetermined and ranges from some 4 to 15 USGPM depending on the size of the unit and process requirements."

"Mining companies around the world are embracing geometallurgical modeling at a rapid rate, as senior executives realize that inputs must be properly measured if the output is to be managed effectively. Geometallurgical modeling is used to scientifically manage risk in project evaluation, for plant design and production forecasting, and optimization of production planning and mineral processing/metallurgical unit operations. The technology also provides a solid foundation for implementing broad corporate strategies with respect to intelligent asset utilization and metal sales. Over the past five years, MinnovEX Technologies Inc. has been actively engaged in developing, promoting and applying geometallurgical modeling technology for major mining companies around the world. This paper describes the methodology for successfully applying the technology for the unit operations of comminution and flotation in the mining industry.INTRODUCTIONGeometallurgical modeling (referred hereon as geomet modeling), in theory, can be applied to its full potential on all unit operations in mineral processing; however, this paper will concentrate on two of the largest unit operations, namely comminution and flotation, where the technology is actually being practiced by many large mining companies. For concept studies and prefeasibility studies, aspects of geometallurgical technology are regularly applied but in a less rigorous manner than for final feasibility studies where justification for funds is sought. This paper will focus on the final feasibility stage of a project and on existing operations or planned expansions, where the full power of geometallurgical technology is brought to bear in a cost effective manner.One of the unique aspects of geomet modeling, when used to its potential, is the ability to design plants, and forecast and plan production with a quantifiable degree of precision, something that was unattainable in the past.
