The Republic of Kazakhstan has well developed mining and metallurgical complex. In modern conditions, when deposits of useful minerals are running thin, it is very important to find additional sources for obtaining necessary products. As our investigations showed different kinds of waste may be used for producing of different kinds of products, which are successfully applied in different branches of KazakhstanÆs economy. Analysis of ways for increasing of complex use of mineral raw materials of different deposits, widening raw mineral materials base and decreasing negative effects on the environment, are presented in this paper.

Following a long period of increase, there has been a reduction in exploration expenditure and activity in Australia over the past two years. During the post Second World War period, exploration was largely driven by mining companies seeking resources to satisfy an increase in world demand, while increasing their asset base as a result of mineral discoveries. In general, return on investment to shareholders was not the major driving force. With the exception of gold the mining industry has been faced with a long-term fall of metal prices in real terms. As a result the net profit return on average shareholderÆs funds in the Australian minerals industry has fallen from over 20 per cent in 1990 to less than five per cent today. Mining is now competing for funds with communication and finance based industries yielding high returns on shareholder investment. Shareholders and superannuation fund managers seeking a high return on short-term investments have indirectly reduced the funds available to the mining industry. Globalisation of the mining industry is leading to the rationalisation of the Australian mining industry as witnessed by mergers and acquisitions of local companies by foreign investors. The return on capital invested in the Australian mineral exploration industry must improve if the industry is to be competitive on a worldwide basis. Failure to achieve this will result in capital flowing overseas or to other industries. Relatively short-term upswings in metal prices which are generally driven by threats to the supply base (eg strikes, mine closures, increases in country risk) often lead to increased capital raisings for exploration funding. As a consequence of the time taken to raise the capital and increase exploration activity, measured exploration activity lags the metal price increases. There are also lags between commencement of exploration and discovery and ore production. In the case of gold exploration expenditure peaked six years after the price rise of 1980 Companies persevering with exploration in the current difficult period will be rewarded because they will be able to capitalise on future metal price rises and a minimised time lag.

Geometallurgy is an emerging, cross-disciplinary field that integrates spatial models of rock properties with time-based outcomes of mining and treatment processes. Geometallurgical variables include any rock property that has a positive or negative effect on the business. Some of the more critical geometallurgical variables include recovery, grindability, throughput, power consumption, mineralogy and content of deleterious materials. These variables drive project costs and revenues in a fundamental way and thus geometallurgy has potential to positively impact on the value of strategic and tactical decisions across many mining organisations. Geometallurgical models, like traditional grade-only models are based on samples collected from the mineralised and non-mineralised regions of the deposit. The nature of some non-grade variables, particularly those that are dependent on the ore treatment processes, requires special consideration during sampling and subsequent spatial modelling. Failing to objectively consider the characteristics of variables may seriously compromise the validity of the sample selection, sample treatment, data models and the subsequent decisions. In addition to addressing the vexed question of collecting an æunbiased and representativeÆ sample, the sampling and modelling approach must consider issues of scale, both geostatistical support and also the relationship between bench-scale data and operational-scale mineral processing performance. This paper proposes a framework (the Primary-Response framework) for the classification of geometallurgical variables. This framework is designed to assist with developing sampling approaches and identifying the most appropriate spatial modelling approach. The proposed framework can also help identify the risks associated with designing, sampling and modelling of both types of geometallurgical variables. The Primary-Response framework divides variables into two categories; primary variables and response variables. How a variable is classified in this framework depends on the degree to which the variable reflects either an intrinsic attribute of the rock (æprimaryÆ) or its response to measurement processes (æresponseÆ). Depending on the classification in this framework, appropriate sampling and modelling decisions can be made to minimise the risk associated with the incorrect treatment of the variable. In particular, the authors argue that for response variables, the approach taken to building spatial models may need to be different to conventional linear averaging approaches (for example kriging).

Computer modelling is being used to simulate rock fracture, caving and stress redistribution about longwall panels with increasing confidence. The models are being assessed against field monitoring and have significantly increased the understanding of caving mechanics within the overburden. This paper discusses the modelling approach and provides some examples of its application to overburden damage and induced hydraulic conductivity. Computer models used in this study simulate the fracture process in the geological units throughout the overburden. Analysis of the mining induced fracture patterns and in situ joint patterns allows an estimation of the hydraulic conductivity within the overburden. The cubic flow relationship has been used in the examples presented.

Transport infrastructure constitutes, since always, an essential link between regions, countries and continents, for economical, commercial and human purposes. Permanently growing mobility needs, which are encountered in the whole world, lead to a more and more clear necessity to increase and modernise these transport infrastructures, as well in quantity as in quality, for all transport modes, and for all what is able to be transported, from people to consumption goods and energy. With only very few exceptions, transport infrastructure achievements have for long been the concern of the sole public authorities, at the various levels, which put them, mostly free of charge or at very low cost, at the disposition of the user or the customer.

The authors are looking at the behaviour of the mineral processing circuits by means of the simulators operating under random disturbance. The present paper deals with the fuzzy control systems in comparison with PID controllers. A series of tests are conducted on simplified prototype processes with (1) dead time plus first-order lag model and (2) diffusive model. In the next series of tests the self-sustained process model was introduced to improve control against dead time. In both cases fuzzy and PID controllers are optimised by EVOP method. Particular attention is paid to the effect of observation noise to analyse for the problems which can be fatal to practical applications in mineral processing. Finally the methods developed are applied to a closed-circuit wet grinding system simulator operating under random disturbance.

Analysis of the 2001 Australian census data set can be used to gain a detailed insight into the trends and levels of employment in different industry sectors. There is a common perception that employment of geoscientists within the mining industry and indeed across all industries has decreased significantly. However, the data shows that the number of individuals stating that they are geoscientists employed across all industries has decreased by only five per cent from 5336 in 1996 to 5067 in 2001. Within the mining industry (Australia and New Zealand Standard Industrial ClassificationÆs û ANZICÆs mining class), the number of geoscientists employed has decreased by ten per cent from 2701 in 1996 to 2441 in 2001. These figures, while showing a decrease, do not reflect the magnitude of the decrease commonly perceived. However, further analysis shows the number of geoscientists employed in mineral exploration may have decreased significantly more.

In large-scale mining, large-sized intermediate pillars, or block-pillars, are generated on the horizon or between closely located mines. These pillars are mined under high rock pressure that results from the stress concentration zones superposition from closely located working excavations. This problem becomes much more complicated if high tectonic stresses occur in the rock mass inducing a rock-burst risk situation. Mining experience gained in mining seven block-pillars at three Khibiny mines in Russia under the geomechanical situation like that described aboveÆ is discussed in detail. It has been shown how safe mine of block-pillars depends on their width, location relative to significant geological failures and uncaved rocks of the hanging wall, the order of pillar recovery, and application of special measures for rock mass stress relieving. Basing on the analysis of the mining experience and special scientific researches, the basic principles are worked-out for safe block-pillar mining under rock-burst prone conditions.

I have spent most of the past thirty-five years working as an economic geologist in the area of exploration and development of base and precious metals. Most of this period has been as an employee of Trans-National-Corporations (TNC's). I presently act as a consulting geologist to a joint venture company, bringing together two such TNC's: Anglo American' Corporation and affiliated companies De Beers (Diamonds) and Minorco (Metals mining outside of Southern Africa), and Normandy Mining Limited of Australia. Normandy is presently through its gold arm PosGold, Australia's largest gold miner and Anglo American can claim to be the world's largest gold company producing over 280 tonnes of gold a year, more than twice its nearest rival Gold Fields of South Africa. In addressing this topic, the role that Government can, and should play in mineral development, I will be drawing heavily on some examples from these and other TNC's experience in recent offshore mining Investment.

More than ten seafloor massive sulfides (SMSs), which tend to be enriched in Au and Ag with varying amounts of Zn, Pb and Ba, have been reported in Japanese Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) including the Jade hydrothermal field in the Izena cauldron Okinawa, theSunrise deposit in Myojin knoll Izu-Ogasawara, and other active deposits found in the past 20 years. From the fiscal year 2008 some universities in Japan will begin development of sensing devices to delineate surface distributions of known SMSs and to find new ones. The devices would be deployed by an autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) or remotely-operated underwater vehicle (ROV) later in active hydrothermal fields and potential areas in the EEZ. On the other hand, different laboratories are planning to research and evaluate SMSs with state-of-the-art methods such as the benthic multi-coring system and geophysical devices to collect information in deeper parts of the SMSs. In this session recent projects on exploration and evaluation of SMSs with some new trials including geophysical and geological surveys in Japan will be reported. Major changes occurred in the management of loss prevention and risk management at operations in North and South America due to increased insurance premiums following the Olympic Dam fire in Australia in 2001. There are many different scenarios on how fires can develop and the estimated maximum losses (EML) those fires can incur. The EML is utilised by insurance companies to determine the cost of insurance premiums. The cost of insurance can be controlled at existing and newly designed solvent extraction (SX) plants by using risk reduction methods and design criteria to limit the fire exposure. A review of data collected during several loss prevention risk assessments can show how a budget can be protected from dramatically increased premiums and see which design of SX plant and fire protection standards best apply to your operations. The paper will investigate the pitfalls of existing materials of construction, capacity, geography, management practices, fire risk minimisation, and fire suppression systems. Intelligent engineering and managerial improvements implemented by the operations in the Americas in the past two years have further minimised the fire potential and benefited companies in insurance renewal negotiations.

Strong markets for metals and energy over the past five years have supported equity and debt market funding to enable a new group of mining juniors to emerge in control of economic resources, some in regions with high investment risk. As companies drive these projects to development, production and positive operating cash flow, their Boards and CEOs are confronting important questions:Having achieved initial success, what is our longer term purpose as a company? Does the purpose originally described in the Initial Public Offering to raise equity remain wholly relevant? Given that purpose, how do we understand the available sets of opportunities and related risks? Should we be acquiring new assets or other companies, or developing the existing portfolio? What commodity sectors and geographies should we focus on? Or should we be conserving funds until asset prices or project costs provide greater assurance of value to shareholders? How do we translate that purpose into tangible goals that shape and direct the work of people in the organisation? A new watersoluble binder for mineral ore pellets has been developed by the sulfonation of bituminous materials. A highly effective binder for iron ore pellet making is obtainable from bituminous materials produced in the high temperature cracking of crude oils. The main iron ore deposits of Western Australia fall into three very different geological classes, which are, in order of importance: hematite enrichment ore, pisolitic limonite ore, and sedimentary ore. These are presently (1973) being mined in the approximate proportions 20 : 2 : 1, while the equivalent proportions for reserves are, very approximately, 200 : 70 : 1. Two minor categories which mar- ginally qualify as ore are detrital material variously referred to as scree ore or canga, and potentially beneficiable iron formation. These two latter types are dealt with very briefly, and the three main categories are dis- cussed in order of economic significance. Hematite enrichment ore results from the selective replacement of a pre-existing host rock by hematite. Almost without exception, this host is cherty banded iron formation (BIF); but certain exceptions have great genetic inter- est. Ore bodies of this kind occur both in the Archaean BIFs of the Pilbara and Yilgarn Blocks and in the Proterozoic BIFs of'the Hamersley Basin. It follows from their virtual restriction to a single kind of sedimentary host that there is strong stratigraphic control over the shape of ore bodies: these may be almost flat, of dyke-like form, or of complex configuration, according to the pre-enrichment structure of the host bed. Notwithstanding the world class work done by its committees in developing codes of ethics and of practice in field geological handbooks, mining cost estimation handbooks, and reserve estimation, the AusIMM could better prepare its membership for QA. MICA could provide a simple set of guidelines to enable consultant members to develop their own QA procedures manual conforming to AusIMM Codes and to IS09003, and AS3903.

Comb-layered textures preserve the cyclic accumulation and release of volatiles inside magmas that are temporally associated with large Cu-Au-Mo-rich porphyry ore deposits. Fluid inclusions in these textures sample pristine magmatic fluid. Microanalysis of this fluid helps constrain the physical models that operate at melt-fluid interface and in the broader magma system responsible for ore deposit formation. Technical o analysis of blast furnace operations has for many years formed the basis of intense research throughout the iron and steel industry, world wide, because the efficiency of blast furnace operation estab- lishes the foundation for all subsequent processes in a steel plant. So much depends on the constant, efficient performance of iron melting units in relation to costs, quality, regularity of operations and reli- able delivery performance to our customers.
