The use of a field spectrometer to systematically analyse drill samples from over 200 holes around the Permian-Carboniferous Ravenswood gold deposits in north-east Queensland has successfully identified both small and deposit-scale changes in the alteration mineral chemistry. Changes in chlorite composition within the tonalite host rocks are evident at the district scale, with Fe-rich chlorites seemingly more common in the vicinity of the deposits. Significant variations in white mica chemistry also occur, but mostly on the vein selvage scale, with no clear distinction between near-mine and distal compositions. The results indicate that chlorite compositional maps produced from regional field or airborne spectrometer data could potentially be used as a vector to ore in exploring for similar deposits in the area. This paper quotes the results of many years of experiments and observations concerning ore drawing from mining blocks in major ore deposits mined by bulk induced caving of ore and country rock. Numerous laboratory and commercial test results of Russian, Ukrainian and Kazakh mines have been used and processed. Over 35 per cent of all ferrous, non-ferrous and other ore mined in the Russian Federation by the underground method is drawn underneath overlying caved rock (including ore drawing after bulk caving of pillars). The complexity of the process denies a logical or engineering calculation answer to many commercial production questions. Hence the massive research of ore drawing issues targeted at ore recovery forecasts in specific instances in order to assess an engineering solution or to define the design or planned ore draw performance. At first, the conditions were pictured as ideal. Subsequently, it was attempted to take into account the side contacts of ore with the country rock and the caved barren rock, the small size stuff in the caved rock, the unevenly loosening ore, end draw, and so on. The ore draw information available provides ample qualitative characteristics of the phenomena and only approximated and partially quantitative characteristics for individual cases. Many specific situations require individual studies of subject specific models.

In his letter of resignation as General Superintendent of the Broken Hill Associated Smelters (BHAS) prior to taking up aconsulting position at imperial Smelting, G.K. Williams wrote that he considered his major contributions at BHAS were:the development of large scale sintering machines;the double tuyere-row blast furnace; continuous lead refining.Despite his well deserved reputation as a scientist, based on his advancement of the metallurgical chemistry underlying lead refining processes, Williams reveals that he considered commercial implementation as the ultimate measure of technological success. Furthermore, he clearly did not differentiate between the scientific and the empirical as a means of achieving that end.

The Julius Kruttschnitt Mineral Research Centre (JKMRC) has recently commercialised a variety of new products for the mining industry through its commercial division (JKTech). Although the products cover a wide variety of niche applications, a common thread runs through the Research, Development and Commercialisation (RD and C) process: they have emerged from industry sponsored projects. The development history of JigScan (a control system for the mineral-processing jig) is a good example of how this RD and C process works in practice. It involves building mutually beneficial partnerships between the JKMRC and the mining industry through several incremental projects with one or more industry sponsors. All research projects have objectives to demonstrate but these projects also feature a degree of product development to actively encourage and support the longer-term vision for the mature commercial technology. The process to develop JigScan as a commercial product worked because each incremental project recovered costs, provided an immediate benefit for the sponsor and contributed to the longer-term development objectives of the JKMRC. Integrating development with research need not greatly increase the cost of research objectives generally provides a more robust research outcome for the sponsor and greatly reduces the overall development risk. Successful projects often feature industry mentors actively participating in the RD and C process. Additional funding from government appears to be easier to obtain when such close partnerships with industry are apparent. Finally, the business structure of the JKMRC within the University of Queensland ensures that commercial outcomes, developed within the contractual arrangements of the underlying RD and C projects, are used to benefit and support further RD and C with the mining industry. This paper tells the story of the development and commercialisation of JigScan, and draws conclusions about this kind of RD and C model.

Exploration and mining title administration in the Northern Territory has changed dramatically over the last 20 years. These changes have occurred due to legislative amendments, technological developments, and the changing face of the mining industry. The first legislation to control mining in the Northern Territory was the Northern Territory Gold Mining Act (1873) of South Australia. In 1911, control of the Northern Territory was passed from South Australia to the Commonwealth. As a result of the mining boom which followed the discovery of gold in Tennant Creek in 1932, the Commonwealth passed the Mining Ordinance of 1939. This legislation was amended 39 times and stayed in force until July 1982, when the self-governing Northern Territory passed the Mining Act 1980. This Act is still in force and is continuously under review. The first computerised mining titles system, REGIS, was created in 1984/85 and was, to all intents and purposes, just a computerised index. Various modifications ensued, and in 1989 the Titles Database was unveiled. The database has developed to be one of the most sophisticated yet user-friendly mining titles databases in Australia. In excess of 50 companies have access to the database from their own offices. Work continues on its development and fine-tuning. The paper outlines the development of the database since inception.

In their description of the post-mine leaching of galena and marmatite at Broken Hill, Messrs. Garretty and Blanchard1 find themselves unable to account satisfactorily for the fact that the more usual order of solubility of these two minerals is here reversed, and that the galena is leached more rapidly than the marmatite. An explanation of this somewhat unusual phenomena is perhaps provided by the recent work of Garrels.2 Garrels showed that the presence of Cl' ions in Pb-Zn solutions, in concentrations in excess of 0·1 N, rendered the zinc less soluble than the lead. It seems possible that Cl' ions may be present in the underground waters of the North Broken Hill Mine in sufficient concentration to cause such reversal in the relative solubility of the lead and zinc sulphides.Thus the analysis of "water believed to be free from contamination by mine drainage" given by Messrs. Garretty and Blanchard (p. 158 of their paper) is as follows:Total solids in solution 878 grains per gallon...164 grams of Cl per gallon is equivalent to 2· 3394 grams of Cl' per litre, which is equivalent to 0066 N.This concentration is approaching a value sufficient to cause a reversal of the relative solubility of zinc and lead salts; and it seems probable that there will be parts of the ore-body where locally the Cl' concentration will greatly exceed this figure. At such points the lead salts would be more soluble than the zinc salts, so that the galena would be leached more rapidly than the marmatite. With the dilution of such Cl'-rich waters with water containing less Cl', the Cl' concentration would fall below 0·1 N, and the lead would be reprecipitated, while the zinc would stay in solution, as, for example, in the water analysis quoted. A generalised mathematical model for hydrocyclone classifiers was developed by the author (Nageswararao, 1978) using dimensionless groups which include phenomenological characteristics as independent variables. This model is incorporated in JKSimMet, the steady state mineral processing simulator developed by JKTech.Recently, when this model was rewritten (Lynch and Morrell, 1992), in terms of variables other than those used by the author, a few errors have crept in. For example, while the exponent of (Du/Dc) in the equation for d50e should be negative (-0.47), it was recorded as positive (0.47). Also, the exponent of (DoIDe) in the equation for pressure drop should be 0.67 and not 0.60. In the same equation, the exponent of Dc would turn out to be -0.10 and not 0.15. These are clearly attributable to typographic and rounding off errors, while transforming the original equations.More recently, Cilliers (pers comm) has done a comprehensive evaluation of the major semi-empirical models for hydrocyclones.He observed that the major difference between the cyclone model developed by the author and other models lies in the method of quantifying the effect of spigot diameter on d50e. He noted that while all other models predict an increase in d50e with a decrease in the spigot diameter, the model as cited by Lynch and Morrell (1992) predicts just the opposite. However, he conjectured correctly that the discrepancy could be due to a typographic error. As the model is still unpublished, it is felt that the original model equations should be recorded with the correct exponents, so that errors in predictions other than those due to the limitations of the model itself could be avoided. pNumerical modelling has been used to examine the relationship between the results of two commonly used methods of assessing the propensity of coal to spontaneous combustion, the R70 and Relative Ignition Temperature tests, and the likely behaviour in situ. The criticality of various parameters has been examined and a method of utilising critical self-heating parameters has been developed. This study shows that on their own, the laboratory test results do not provide a reliable guide to in situ behaviour but can be used in combination to considerably increase the ability to predict spontaneous combustion behaviour./p

Fundamentally, the development of a minerals processing project is a very risky enterprise. Most mining companies do not have sufficient financial resources to undertake significant projects and hence have to undertake external financing. Indeed, most resource companies understand the high risks associated in developing their projects and therefore, wish others to share in the risks. Most merchant banks, on the other hand, are searching to find suitable resource development projects in which they can share their risk and also share a large proportion of the ærewardÆ. To resolve this issue a Feasibility Study is completed by the project developer and assessed by the merchant bank often with the assistance of an æIndependent EngineerÆ (IE) who assesses the validity of the development proposal. Generally speaking, unless the Feasibility Study has been prepared improperly, the technical aspects of most mineral projects are reasonable. Some of the more recent so-called æhigh techÆ projects are exceptions but these still do not present major technical mistakes or misconceptions. p> In most cases, the major criticism the IE presents after discussing the validity of the ore reserves focuses on production plans, capital costs and operating costs. Of these three parameters the production plan is one in which owners tend to be far too optimistic and financiers, until recent years, have not taken a position. The most critical part of the development plan is the ability of the project, as designed, to attain the required design performance and, even more critically, the ability of the owner to reach and sustain this level of production. In short, how long should the æramp-upÆ be planned to take? Financiers have become more circumspect and are now taking a more conservative view of new project performance by factoring into their project financial analysis longer periods of ramp-up, higher capital costs and higher operating costs. However, these financiers can also be part of the æproblemÆ if they become overly conservative. This paper attempts, by way of case studies available from the public arena, to identify the pitfalls the project owners can meet and possible means of avoiding the disastrous financial conundrum whereby the second or third æownerÆ is the company that reaps the rewards initially extrapolated. The paper briefly discusses this problem by referring to projects known to the author and including previous studies that looked at this very problem. It is emphasised that many of the opinions stated within the paper are strictly those of the author and could be subject of much debate.

During the last decade the proper training of operating and maintenance staff has been recognised as directly contributing to the successful startup and continuing operations of a metallurgical project. During this period Bechtel has assisted clients in the design, development and implementation of such training. The clients have been located in Australia, Papua New Guinea, Africa, China and North America. The programmes have addressed mobile and fixed plant operations and maintenance in coal, copper, gold, borax and other mining environments. The level of sophistication has varied from highly structured and documented instruction to less formal, yet controlled efforts to reorient and enhance the skills of experienced workers to training personnel with no previous work experience. Many lessons have been learned, some easier than others. The results so far show the potential to discriminate between barren and diamondiferous source rocks, and to distinguish multiple sources within single Drainages.

Pyrite concentrate and calcine from the Nanjing Lead-Zinc-Silver Mines, China, were leached with aqueous cyanide and thiourea solutions. More than half of the contained gold and silver was able to be extracted from the roaster calcines. The very fine dissemination of precious metal grains, high roasting temperature (850 - 900°C) and residual sulphur are believed responsible for the Iow extractions.A recovery of about 70 per cent for both silver and gold was able to be obtained with cyanide and with thiourea leachants when the pyrite was roasted in the laboratory at temperatures between 600 and 650°C.Thiourea, as an alternative leachant, has received much attention recently and a series of constant potential leaching tests was conducted.When the thiourea to formamidine disulphide mole ratio was about two, the precious metal extraction was greatest. In the Nanjing calcined material, this occurred at a potential of about 210 mV relative to a standard calomel electrode.

This paper explains why the valuation of mining assets is often a very different exercise from the valuation of the shares in the mining company which owns those assets. The fundamental reason for this is that mining assets, and the shares of the company which owns those assets have different risks. In order to properly value mining securities it is essential to: ò ensure all the different risks and other factors which impact on the value of the mining assets and the value of the shares are taken into account; and determine the extent to which the different risks and other factors are addressed in the value of the mining assets and the value of the shares so as to avoid double counting or not counting at all. If the alternative, but far from consensus, view is accepted that the correct valuation methodology to apply to shares in mining companies should be based on option pricing theory then conventional valuation practice of both mining assets and shares in mining companies will need to be fundamentally reassessed.

In 1995 Standards Australia International Limited æSAIÆ published a risk management standard titled AS/NZS 4360 Risk Management. It was the first such standard published by a recognised formal standards body anywhere in the world and it put Australia at the leading edge of the risk management discipline. Many Australian and international organisations have utilised the risk management standard and it is one of SAIÆs most important and popular standards. Since its publication in 1995, the risk management standard has gone through a major revision in 1999 and is currently undergoing another such review, which is due for completion in 2004. This paper will chart the application of the standard within certain key organisations since its inception in 1995. A brief overview of the methodology behind AS/NZS 4360 will be presented as well as an overview of supporting and related standards. It is prudent to base risk management and other management system issues on existing and tested standards rather than creating new proprietary approaches. Examples of areas in which the risk management standard might be applied in the mining industry are given, subject to the specific operations of each company: technical, commercial, environmental, informational, and safety and regulatory.

Information from bores in the LatTobe Valley has been accumulating for over fifty years, and the manual extraction of details has become a limiting factor in their use.Punched card equipment, installed by the State Electricity Commission for accounting purposes, was known to be available for reasonable periods, and it was suggested that this could help in the extraction of data from the voluminous records.Investigation showed that they could be substantially duplicated on cards, with consequent gains on many operations; the cards being regarded as an auxiliary to the existing records.BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF RECORDSAs a bore is drilled a continuous record of the strata is kept, together with notes on the presence of water or any unusual features which the driller may observe.When coal is struck, samples of each ten feet are usually sent for analysis.The location and surface level of each bore is fixed by surveyors, and details of dates and methods of drilling are also kept.Bores are allocated numbers, prefixed by the name of the parish within which they are drilled. Numbers are allocated in conjunction with the Department of Mines, to avoid duplication.Records of strata and analyses are kept in folders, with 100 bore numbers per folder.Standard plans are drawn, showing the locations, bore numbers and surface levels. For each bore they also show the depth and thickness of coal struck, and the total depth drilled.Cross sections are then drawn, connecting the various coal seams, which have been identified by the geologist.

The increasing use of Ditch Witch trenching to define gold ore bound- aries in supergeme enriched near surface open cut mines has led to the consideration of using this technique for other sampling procedures. The use of Ditch Witch trenching for exploration has not been widely used and it is anticipated that the technique described will help stimulate more extensive use and new sampling techniques.

The effect on profitability in the short term and viability in the long term requires accurate estimation of grade and tonnages. The application of the Ditch Witch Trenching Machine as a grade control tool has occurred rapidly and the machine is now a working tool in many mines throughout Western Australia.

Numerical modelling is a valuable tool for simulating the fundamental processes that take place during a heating. The models presented in this paper have enabled a quantitative assessment of the effects of initial pile temperature, pile size and mass and coal particle size on the development of a heating. All of these parameters have a certain criticality in the coal self-heating process.
