In the field of mining engineering, design and planning are complex tasks, which require the knowledge of various engineering disciplines. GRUBE (Graphisch-RechnerUnterstiitzter BergwerksEntwurf) is a modular databased program system, which offers computer aid for all mining departments using a 3D CAD software as the user interface. Despite the data quantity and complexity, specific and uniform working conditions have to be applied to the planning of technical equipment of a pit. With the application of 3D graphics, complex data stores and their interrelations become 'palpable' for the user by suitable visualisation. GRUBE-M forms the mechanical operations module of GRUBE, in which underground locations displayed as three-dimensional graphic models are `equipped' interactively. Planning alternatives can be created and compared quickly in terms of technical calculations and economical analysis.

INTRODUCTION The association of methane with coal has been known almost since coal was first mined and in general it has been considered the curse of underground coal mining. Historically, most of the effort to handle this methane has been directed at diluting it to a safe level and preventing an explosive mixture of methane and oxygen from forming in any part of the mine. This is generally achieved by in-mine activites. This approach has two principal drawbacks, the severity of which are dependent on local conditions. The first is that the activity associated with the handling of the methane is undertaken in the mine and there- fore competes with the mining activity for the limited space available. The second drawback is that the whole methane handling activity is generally a cost to the coal because methane is so diluted that it cannot be used. With the value of energy increasing thi; second drawback is gaining importance so th.u several mines in Europe and North America ;it,, now installing systems to recover the methane in a useful form. Fission track thermochronology is a well established method for reconstructing the thermal histories of rocks with particularly important applications in tectonic studies, detecting low-grade thermal events, sedimentary basin analysis and resource exploration. These applications take advantage of the limited stability of fission tracks, especially in apatite, when exposed to the temperatures found in the upper 3-4 km of the crust. Apparent fission track ages in apatites can define an invisible 'stratigraphy' in otherwise homogeneous rock masses that can give valuable information on thermal, tectonic and erosional events. Quantitative modelling of the thermal annealing of tracks in apatite shows that distinctive profiles of apparent fission track age can be related to a number of simple thermal history styles. The main types of profile observed tend to be either an essentially linear decrease of apparent age with increasing depth, which relates to continuous uplift and denudation, or a concave-upwards profile produced by partial annealing in environments of tectonic stability or burial. More complex thermal histories produce compound profiles which are essentially just combinations of these two elements. Track length information allows the apparent age profiles to be interpreted in much greater detail. Examples of the major profile types have now been identified in various geological environments and can be analysed to give information about, for example, uplift and denudation rates, the timing of uplift or low-grade thermal events and maximum palaeotemperatures experienced during burial.

The problem of manufacturing from sulphuric 'acid and Christmas Igland "A" phosphate, superphosphate of acceptable physical condition and agronomic phosphate availability, is directly related- to the crystallisation of a reac- tion product, monocalcium phosphate monohydrate. Two solutions to the problem, vacuum drying the superphosphate and calcination of the ore before reaction with acid, are discussed.

A study is presented of the theoretically possible initiation systems for outbursts and the subsequent propagation mechanism.Previous occurrences of outbursts and their correlation to the theoretical system are described. An estimation of the energy release from two energy sources, gas strain energy and rock/coal strain energy, is presented and the relative importance of each source in the severity of outbursts. Summary: The description of mechanisms of outbursting follows the examination of these phenomena at Collinsville in Bowen No. 2 mine and at Leichhardt Colliery, Blackwater. Quantitative material contained in the paper refers to Leichhardt Colliery, Blackwater. Clearly from the work carried out to date gas release has a major part to play in the out- bursting at both of these collieries. In the case of the December 1 1978 outburst at Leichhardt Colliery energy release estimates place gas strain energy release contributing eight times the energy of that from rock/coal strain energy. Even the normal outbursts at Leichhardt Colliery appear to show this trend. Estimates of energy released are for comparative purposes between gas and rock strain energy and the values obtained may be regarded as approximate.

Spatial continuity as described by a variogram is a reflection of the underlying mineralisation/geology. Modelling of the spatial continuity (variogram) must account for both the quantitative data (ie sample grades), on which the variogram calculations are based, and the qualitative information as provided by the geological interpretation. An understanding of the geology and the variogram interpretation tie together the sample values and allow us to go beyond the actual data (Journel, 1995). Variography makes geology transportable and allows the geological interpolations to be channelled downstream into mine planning, ultimately affecting the economic decisions surrounding a deposit. As such the process of variography and resource modelling is critical. Thus consistent expert decisions need to be made which force geologists to have a closer look at the available information and the geological interpretations. The aim of this paper is to provide an overview of the latest developments in visualising variography and to demonstrate their usefulness in decisions regarding the spatial continuity of mineralisation. New ideas concerning potential future developments in visualising and modelling spatial continuity through variography are introduced.

When Matthew Flinders entered in his log `This land forms the South side of the large bight; and besides projecting beyond the coast line, and being a little higher than usual is remarkable for having some reddish cliffs in it, and deep water near the shore', he was commenting on the deposit of bauxite at a place now known as Weipa. This sighting took place on 9 November 1802, and probably represents the first direct entry in Australia acknowledging a potential mineral deposit. Flinders, of course, had no idea as to what he was looking at, nor did he land to determine its content. If he had, he probably would have had no idea of the substance, and even less knowledge of its use. Nothing further was done to this for about 150 years.

In this paper, the challenging points regarding the high temperature physical chemistry of slags to achieve the improved and stable electric arc furnace (EAF) or electric smelting furnace (ESF) technology on the way to green steel will be reviewed, and the recent experimental and modelling research will be discussed. For example, the initial melting phenomena of hot briquetted iron (HBI) and the slag formation behaviour was observed using a high-frequency induction furnace. Main component of gangue oxides in HBI was SiO2, Al2O3, and CaO in conjunction with unreduced iron oxide. To increase the dephosphorisation efficiency, the distribution ratio of phosphorus between metal and slag was calculated using FactSage™ software, version 8.2 (CRCT ThermFact, Inc., Montreal, Canada) and was compared to the measured results. The optimisation of slag chemistry is required not only for maximum dephosphorisation efficiency with good slag foamability but also for minimum slag volume with less refractory corrosion in EAF process. The slag chemistry is also one of key parameters affecting the operation efficiency in ESF in view of FeO reduction behaviour, viscosity, sulfide capacity, etc.

The Olympic Dam Mine is a large, mechanised, underground operation currently producing 2.2 million tonnes-per-year of copper/uranium/gold ore. The mine is accessed via one shaft and one service decline. An additional 13 raise bored ventilation shafts have been completed to-date.Ventilation requirements are stringent in order to provide adequate dilution and removal of diesel fumes, radon gas/daughters and heat generated from both engines and wall rock.Due to the nature of the orebodies, the mine workings will continue to expand laterally necessitating the addition of at least one major surface raise every year.

The construction and placement of tunnels by means of jacking is continually advancing. This paper presents an outline of the construction of a major highway tunnel placed by a combination of mining and progressive placement by hydraulic jacking of precast units. Features of the project were the relatively shallow ground cover between rail and road routes over the tunnelling and jacking operations and also the weight of tunnel sections to be moved into position.

The effect of titania (TiO2 ) addition on the sintering performance of hematite iron ore has been studied by doping pure TiO2 into a sinter blend. The results of laboratory-scale compact sintering tests confirmed the considerable effect of TiO2 addition on sinter strength and mineralogy. The tumble index measurements confirmed an improvement in the strength of the sinter in response to TiO2 addition. The melting point of the sinter was also affected by increasing the TiO2 content, indicating a possible relationship between coke breeze consumption and TiO2 on industrial-scale sintering of Ti-bearing ores. Analysis of the sintered structures using optical and scanning electron microscopes confirmed a general improvement in the overall pore structure and sinter melt characteristics with the addition of TiO2 to the sinter blend. An important feature of the sinter structure was the formation of a perovskite phase (CaTiO3 ) and an increase in the proportion of this phase in the structure as TiO2 levels increase.CITATION:Dehghan-Manshadi, A, Manuel, J, Hapugoda, S, Ware, N and Donskoi, E, 2015. The Awak Mas gold project is located in the Province of South Sulawesi, Republic of Indonesia. It is situated 300 km by road north of the provincial capital of Ujung Pandang. The capital is readily accessible by air from Australia via Denpasar on Bali or the Indonesian capital, Jakarta (Figure 1). Elevations at Awak Mas range from 850 to 1400 metres above sea level in reasonably rugged terrain. The area is covered by primary and secondary (regrowth) rain forest. The region is subject to an equatorial-type tropical climate. The annual rainfall is a high 3000 mm most of which falls in the rainy season between March and June. In the lower valleys rice, cloves and chocolate crops are cultivated. Title to the project area is secured by a Contract of Work (COW) issued to PT Masmindo Eka Sakti (MES) on 23 October 1987 by the Government of Indonesia. MES was controlled at the time by New Hope Industries group of Brisbane. After New Hope had completed initial reconnaissance exploration of the area, Battle Mountain Gold Company (BMGC) farmed-in in 1991 and earned a 60 per cent beneficial interest in MES.

This paper, describing milling practice at Mount Isa Mines, is one of a series covering milling methods and costs that is being published by the Bureau of Mines, United States Department of the Interior.The Mount Isa concentrator began operations in May 1931, by treating a mixture of oxidized and sulphide ores. Since March, 1935, only sulphide ores have been milled; this change involved major alterations to the flow sheet. The maximum capacity on mixed oxide and sulphide ores was 2,650 tons per day; the present capacity is approximately 1,880 tons of sulphide ore per day. The installation of additional Grushing, grinding, and flotation equipment when completed early in 1939 will increase the maximum capacity of the concentrator to 2;240 tons of sulphide ore daily.All tonnages in this paper are expressed in tons of 2,000 pounds, gallon measurements in terms of Imperial gallons of 277·41 cubic inches, and costs in dollars at the rate of $4 United States currency to the Australian pound.

Queensland hosts vast deposits of brown and black coal, significant accumulations ranging in age from Permian to early Tertiary. The great diversity of coal resources in the State to some extent reflects the proximity of Queensland to plate-marginal tectonic processes through much of the Phanerozoic eon. Coal is contained within sedimentary basin fills of four fundamental types; 1. extensional, 2. foreland, 3. strike-slip, and 4. intracratonic. Thick (10 m+) though laterally restricted coal bodies are characteristic of extensional and strike-slip basins, whereas coals of more modest thickness but much greater lateral extent are typical of foreland and intracratonic basins.

This research is to grope for a method to reduce high pore pressure taking place on tunnel shotcrete lining, especially in underwater tunnels, effectively by utilising a new concept of patternised pin drain. Accordingly, the patternised pin drain system is investigated numerically in order to confirm to the effect of reduction of pore pressure by the pin drain and its effective application. Installation of pin drain shows considerable reduction in the figure of pore pressure. It is found through 2D numerical modelling that the change of pore pressure, according to the shape and the location of pin drain, is sensitive by the sequences of the change of location > the change of length > the change of angle degree. In the results of investigation in 3D modelling, the pore pressure is the largest in the centre of the interval among pin drains, and it is possible to obtain an ideal degree of longitudinal angle and an interval by investigating pore pressure taking place on the lining.

The state-owned Swedish company LKAB is one of the world's largest producers of iron ore. LKAB mines the greater part of its ore underground, and very high efficiency is vital if it is to compete successfully with open pit mines. Consequently, computers and OR are essential parts of the company's operations. This paper gives some examples of success- ful computer and OR applications at LKAB, coupled with some remarks on the costs and benefits of OR.

The Beaconsfield Gold Mine within the township of Beaconsfield in northern Tasmania has been established in recent years to exploit a known resource in the Tasmania Reef which was mined to a depth of 450 m below surface between 1877 and 1914 yielding 850 000 ounces of gold. Activity at Beaconsfield over the past 30 years has involved drilling to assess the resource and rehabilitation of the top 100 m of the Hart Shaft that had collapsed since the original closure. More recently the mine has been dewatered to the 375 m Level and work is well advanced establishing infrastructure aimed at recommencing production during 1998 - 99. This paper reviews geotechnical studies undertaken to-date and provides a brief overview of some practical methods of analysing ground conditions. It pursues simple observation and analysis as a tool for assessing mine design and ground support options without recourse to extensive monitoring and measurement and avoids the use of elaborate models before the basics are understood.

PISCES - the Planning and Information System for Coal Export Services has been developed by Port Waratah Coal Services (PWCS) to ensure the efficient and economic operation of the Hunter Valley Coal Chain. PISCES is a computer based integrated information and management system to coordinate operations commencing at minesites through the coal chain to shiploading at the Port. The PISCES system comprises a central database around which a number of planning modules interact. These include interactive programs for train planning and timetabling, stockpile management, berthing analysis and a coal shippers enquiry system. PWCS has previously developed - number of computer based systems for planning, controlling and monitoring complex coal handling operations and the extension of the PISCES system to the Hunter Valley Coal Chain is another initiative to assist the Hunter Valley Coal Export Industry in looking confidently towards the Future.

In flotation, the property that is exploited to effect the separation of a mineral from an ore is referred to as its floatability. Assessment and quantification of ore floatability is of fundamental importance in modelling and simulation of flotation circuits. This paper describes the design, construction and operation of a new laboratory flotation rig that has been developed at the Julius Kruttschnitt Mineral Research Centre (JKMRC) to determine the floatability of different ores on a small-sale. The rig is designed for continuous operation. The major features of the rig are highlighted in this paper. An unique characteristic of the rig is a 9.1 L conditioning vessel. This provides a mixing regime close to plug-flow which avoids complications such as different collector coverages for similarly sized particles (which would considerably increase the complexity of ore floatability determination). The main advantages of this rig when compared to conventional batch flotation cells include better control of the chemical environment and the ability to determine froth recovery, entrainment and water recovery with increased accuracy. Preliminary tests undertaken with a high-grade lead/zinc ore from BHP Cannington are presented demonstrating the good level of reproducibility obtainable in operating the equipment.
