In October 1980 the two existing flotation circuits were combined into a single new circuit. This circuit used modern 11.3 m3 flotation cells which replaced 1.4 m3 units. Sometime after this change, a significant deterioration in metallurgical performance occurred. This paper describes the work done to discover the causes of deterioration in performance and actions taken. The program implemented to prevent a future occurrence is also presented. The work included analysis of routine plant data, analysis of surveys to obtain element and mineral flows on both a sized and unsized basis, some quantitative mineralogy, and analysis of some external factors.

Broken Hill is situated at an elevation of approximately 1000 ft. above sea-level, on the Barrier Ranges, in the State of New South Wales, Australia. It is approximately 700, 280 and 330 miles from the ports of Sydney, Pirie, and Adelaide, respectively.The summers are usually hot and dusty, with a recorded maximum shade temperature of 114° F. The rainfall averages approximately 9 in. per annum.

During a programme of explosive performance evaluation at Hamersley Iron, Mount Tom Price Mining Operations, the relative performances of a range of heavy ANFO explosives were compared during normal production blasting operations. In addition, a number of heavily instrumented single hole blasting trials were conducted with each product type. The blasts were monitored in terms of blasthole velocity of detonation (VOD), measured using multi-point plasma conductivity probes with up to 16 measurements per blasthole. Up to 16 blastholes were monitored in each production blast. The results of measurements show a marked difference in performance of all heavy ANFO products between single blastholes and full production blasts, indicating a significant degree of interaction between blastholes in production blasting. The interaction is shown to result in a loss of detonation pressure of explosive, and considered to lead to a loss of fragmentation. The degree of interaction is seen to increase with increasing emulsion content in the products, and is more pronounced in some explosive types than others. The paper presents the methods of measurement and analysis, and the results of monitoring, together with implications on blast design and application of heavy ANFO products.

Heavy mineral sand deposits are a source for the economically important element titanium, which is contained in minerals such as ilmenite and rutile. In heavy mineral deposits ilmenite displays various degrees of alteration. Natural weathering of ilmenite involves the removal of Fe and thus results in an increase in the Ti-content. Minerals such as pseudorutile, ferropseudobrookite, anatase and the ill-defined mineral aggregate leucoxene, which consists mainly of various amounts of remnant ilmenite, pseudorutile, ferropseudobrookite and anatase, are typical replacement products of ilmenite. Ferropseudobrookite occurs as a recrystallised, optically and chemically distinct mineral phase. Textural relationships suggest a diversity of physicochemical conditions including weathering and metamorphism that led to the formation of complex mineral assemblages and textures. In the heavy minerals industry the alteration products of ilmenite are generally referred to as æaltered ilmeniteÆ and/or leucoxene. The distinction between æaltered ilmeniteÆ and leucoxene is not consequently defined and is very much dependent on economic factors and specific mining operations (ie determined by deposit specific mineral assemblages). Generally the term leucoxene is used in the heavy minerals industry as a collective description for ilmenite alteration products with TiO2-components ranging from 65 - 95 per cent. A detailed comparative mineralogical investigation including microscopic, SEM and QEMSCAN« techniques show that it is possible to identify and quantify the replacement products of ilmenite on a micron scale. QEMSCAN« generated particle maps were graphically compared with photomicrographs taken by applying reflective light microscopy. The resulting information can be integrated over the entire sample with respect to composition, absolute and relative mineral abundances, grain sizes, volumes, densities, textural relationships and liberation potentials. This provides a powerful tool for a first appraisal of the physicochemical behaviour of bulk samples and individual particles during metallurgical processing.

During the past 18 months several import- ant hydrocarbon discoveries have been made in the Dampier Sub-basin, which is a sedimentary area lying entirely offshore from the Precambrian Pilbara Block in the southern part of 'he Northwest Shelf of Western Australia. This sub-basin is a major sedimentary downwarp forming a northern extension to the Carnarvon Basin. This extension is bounded to the north by the De Grey Nose, separating it from the Beagle Sub-basin. To the south the Dampier Sub-basin merges with the Barrow Sub- basin. Extensive seismic data combined with results from exploration drilling show that the Dampier Sub-basin is a complex depositional basin containing over 20,000 feet of sediments which are mainly Triassic to Recent in age. Tectonically the sub-basin can be divided into seven main structural elements. In a northwest to southeast direction these are the Rankin Platform, the Kendrew Trough, the Madeleine- Dampier Trend, the Lewis Trough, the Legendre- Rosemary Trend, the Enderby Fault Zone and the broad Pilbara Shelf. Permian sediments were encountered in only one well drilled to date in the sub-basin, but Triassic and younger sediments are extensive. Cobalt is principally produced by hydrometallurgical means from the copper-cobalt ores of Zambia and Zaire. In addition cobalt is commonly found in minor quantities in association with nickel and copper-nickel orebodies. Generally the level of cobalt common to these latter orebodies does not warrant separate processing unless the metal price reaches levels last achieved in 1979 and 1980. For pyrometallurgical processing the distribution of cobalt and the factors which affect the distribution of cobalt between matte and slag are not well understood. A limited amount of fundamental research has been completed on cobalt distribution both for simple oxide and matte systems. The paper briefly reviews the relevant literature on theoretical aspects of cobalt distribution between metal and slag and the deportment of cobalt in sulphide smelting circuits. The deportment of cobalt in the Kalgoorlie Nickel Smelter circuit is critically analysed and areas where recovery improvements may be achieved are highlighted.

A structural study of northwest Fergusson Island, part of the D'Entrecasteaux Group, was undertaken using colour and monochrome aerial photography and Landsat imagery. The resulting interpretation shows an upstanding, in part, dome-like metamorphic core complex, which is bound on three sides by an en echelon series of low-angle, thrust faults. Faceted gneissic layers occur throughout the complex. These facets are triangular in plan view and range in size from a few tens of metres, to massive composite zones which traverse the entire uplifted zone, The lower surface of each of the facets are, in fact, low-angle decollements which, during uplift, slid one upon the other to accommodate the vertical and extensional movements. As a consequence, deep structural valleys developed which widen towards the zone of maximum uplift. In many places, recognisable topographic features are replicated on both sides of these valleys, and under the stereoscope can be visually reconstructed to their original pre break-up positions. The southern margin of the core complex is less dome-like and falls away, via a series of deeply-entrenched structural valleys, towards a volcano-studded lowland. The lowland appears to belong to a rift or arm, stemming from the more southerly located Goodenough Bay Infrabasin.

The middle-Devonian Dulladerry Volcanics is a complex of A-type, predominantly rhyolitic ignimbrites, lavas and breccias. They form a NNW trending belt some 90 km long and 10-20 km wide, east of Parkes, NSW. The volcanics are dominated by widespread ignimbrite units with minor basalts, sediments and rarer andesites. The volcanics were deposited in a sub-aerial, possibly continental rift setting and are similar in chemistry and age to the Eden - Comerong - Yalwal Volcanic Zone (EVZ) on the NSW south coast. The volcanics exhibit an unusual Atype chemistry (high Zr, Y, Nb, REE, Ga). This distinctive composition illustrates that the volcanics are not comagmatic with the adjacent Yeoval Granite Complex or Eugowra Granite, which show typical I-type fractionation trends. Epithermal gold veins occur in basalt and andesite in the Dulladerry Volcanics at Mt Aubrey (Hopf, 1992), near Baldry. Alteration also occurs in the Glen Isla and Red Hill areas, with epithermal sinter recognised at Glen Isla. Copper and minor gold mineralisation occurs at the contact of rhyolite and andesite at Reedy Creek, but is not of epithermal origin. The analogous EVZ also contains several epithermal gold fields and it is this style of mineralisation which provides the most prospective targets in the Dulladerry Volcanics. Although the Dulladerry Volcanics also contain high background levels of REE and metals such as Zn and Pb, the general lack of fractionation and water-undersaturated character of A-type magmas does not lend itself to the development of significant concentrations of these elements into a fluid phase and mineralisation. The prospectivity of A-type volcanics in general could not be regarded as high. The biggest hard rock double-shield tunnel boring machine (TBM) in the world, with a diameter of 12.4 m, is currently excavating the North-South Bypass, which includes a crossing under the Brisbane River, Brisbane, Australia, to relieve the often congested road traffic in the city centre. Ten years ago a 10.7 m Mixshield giant helped to handle the Olympic Games in Sydney linking the airport with the city centre for an improved transportation of fascinated visitors. In Shanghai, currently the biggest TBM in the world with 15.43 m diameter presents excellent performance rates; and in Paris a convertible Mixshield could be quickly changed from earth pressure balanced (EPB) to slurry type in order to handle the very heterogeneous ground conditions. In Madrid a 15.2 m EPB giant finished its tunnel job four months ahead of schedule. Large-scale TBMs have proved their economic and innovative potential to create the current and future underground architecture of mega-cities. TBM technology has made further large innovative steps in the last decade. State-of-the-art is a TBM for very heterogeneous ground conditions comprising hard and soft rock with additional high groundwater pressure. The machine concept is adapted to the various ground conditions and allows for a quick and flexible application. Ground treatment by means of additives developed to a helpful tool in this connection. To meet the special challenges of urban tunnel projects of nowadays it is of very high importance, beside applying highest developed technology of TBM, to have a comprehensive technical support during the project phase and to develop positive relationships between all participants of the project which last longer than only for one project.

The difference between a hypothetical and a theoretical approach is considered and the advantages in using a hypothesis is discussed. Virgin horizontal stresses play an important role in stabilising strata which bridge across an excavation, and reduces the tensile stresses which develop in a beam subjected to bending. Simple formulae are deduced for the bridging of a thick massive stratum under such conditions. At shallow depths, tensile failure on the upper side of the beam is the most likely cause of fracture, but below a certain depth this gives place to compressive failure on the underside, with the possible incidence of rock bumps. The presence of strong massive beds delay the onset of subsidence and may restrict the width of the subsidence trough. If the material involved in the caving is strong, this will reduce the final subsidence, especially at shallow depths. The British regulations for the control of aquifers and their dependence on the strain developed at the seabed are discussed. As an alternative, the concept of a disturbance factor is introduced to permit the consider- ation of aquifers at depth, leading to an explanation of the make of water on the first faces to be mined in the Selby Coalfield. 'Elie paper closes with a brief consideration of the different roles played by longwall face supports in the control of readily cavable strata, and the control of strong beds which hold up in the waste.

Since 2005 BHP Billiton Iron Ore has been working with the consulting company Runge to implement the software XPAC Advanced Destination Scheduler (ADS) in life-of-mine studies. The Mt Whaleback mine, being the single biggest open cut iron ore mine in the world, presents some special challenges in scheduling. The biggest challenge has been the slow run time and difficulty in targeting all ore and waste requirements. The high waste to ore strip ratio means that much of the cost of mining is tied up in waste dumping. It is therefore very important to schedule waste efficiently. At Mt Whaleback there is an additional challenge of managing two types of waste: inert and environmentally sensitive pyritic material. This paper shows how the XPAC destination scheduler is configured to achieve efficient and repeatable waste scheduling results at the Mt Whaleback mine. It also discusses proposed improvements to the process. The overall ore and waste schedule is configured to target mining parameters, crusher feed and grades. The schedule is run in two stages. The first stage is ore mining. The waste that needs to be mined is locked in a sequence. The second stage is the waste scheduling. The waste destination scheduler uses three inputs: source waste parcels locked in a sequence, a haul road and a waste dump block model. The process involves setting some rules for dump progression and haul path selection. These can be validated. The schedule is then run to target the shortest travel time. The results of scheduling are graphical and numeric and can be transferred into many different formats for reporting. The graphical result shows face positions in time that can be used for detailed dump design. The numeric results are used to estimate truck fleet size, fuel consumption, labour and equipment financials. The process has been successful in reducing the project time line, increasing the ability to do more scenarios and increasing schedule accuracy, transferability and repeatability.

Fragmentation control is perhaps the most critical aspect of quarrying operations, potentially impacting on the costs of all down stream processes, and sometimes even on the economic viability of an operation. The focal points of studies to control fragmentation are generally the pattern of blastholes, the accuracy of drilling, and the most appropriate powder factor. Recent studies suggest that the performance, and consistency of performance, of explosive detonation in the blastholes may also be a significant factor impacting on blast performance in hard rock quarries. This paper presents the results of studies of bulk emulsion and watergel explosive performance, using blasthole velocity of detonation measurements, and its impact on fragmentation. Field studies show a strong correlation between blasthole VoD and blast fragmentation. Another aspect of explosive performance impacting on ease of excavation of blasted rock is muckpile displacement, from which estimates of effective heave energy have been made for different bulk slurry (emulsion and watergel) products.

The advancement of computer applications in the coal industry is focusing interest on the presentation of washability data by mathematical functions.The normal method of presenting washability data is in the form of five curves, usually filled by eye or by cubic spline functions. It has been shown that coal washability can be characterised by two basic relations: the instantaneous ash vs relative density relationship and the instantaneous yield vs relative density relationship. In a new approach to the mathematical modelling of the instantaneous ash vs relative density relationship, theapplication of the algorithm to a data set from a mine in central Queensland was successful.

The Chatree deposit is located in the central portion of Loei Fold Belt, which extends from Lao PDR in the north through centralThailand to Cambodia in the south. Epithermal gold-silver mineralisation at Chatree occurs as veins/veinlets and stockworks with minor breccia in volcaniclastic and volcano-sedimentary rocks of andesitic to basaltic andesite composition and Permo-Triassic age. This preliminary oxygen isotope study mainly focuses on vein quartz of Au-Ag bearing mineralization (Stage 2) and a few samples of late Stage 4 quartz ¦ calcite veins. Quartz from Au-Ag bearing mineralisation has oxygen isotope values ranging from 8.1 to 12.3ë with the lowest values generally occurring at the deeper level (140 m below the surface). The late barren quartz ¦ calcite veins (Stage 4) tend to have higher oxygen isotope values ranging from 11.9 to 12.0ë. The oxygen isotope composition of the Chatree ore fluids were calculated at 250¦C, 300¦C and 350¦C based on homogenisation temperatures of fluid inclusions. The calculated oxygen isotopic composition of the Chatree ore fluid ranges between -1 and 6ë that overlaps with both meteoric and magmatic compositions. This shift in oxygen isotope compositions may relate to processes such as water rock-interaction and/or mixing of meteoric and magmatic fluids. It is interesting to note that the lowest quartz oxygen isotope values are spatially more or less confined to the prominent structures in the centre of the major ore zones. These structures may have been acted as conduits for higher temperature magmatic fluids. The quartz oxygen isotope values increase outwards from the centre of the main ore zones to the margin of the pits possibly due to mixing of magmatic fluids with lower temperature meteoric water. Whole rock oxygen and hydrogen isotope studies are in progress to investigate isotopic trends in the wall rock away from the ore zone. The systematic variation of oxygen isotopes in quartz from the mineralised veins and adjacent wall rocks could potentially be used as a vector to ore. An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. The series of events leading to the adoption of more complex flotation circuits for coal have been reviewed. In essence, it has been concluded that ac- ceptable overall flotation recovery will only be obtained when efficient distri- bution of collector over all the component feed size fractions is ensured. The achievement of this goal is most likely to be obtained by feed classification and separate flotation of appropriate size fractions. The adoption of such a phil- osophy, however, imposes a number of process problems of both a chemical and an engineering nature. Some of these problems have been identified and possible solutions discussed. A case is emerging for the development of a new generation of flotation cells designed specifically for the flotation of classified coal and for the development of a series of novel re- agents which have the propensity to float middling particles.

Large scale cut and fill mining in narrow silver-lead-zinc orebodies began at Mount Isa in 1964. Initially each orebody was one stope and access was via raises from the level above. Upholing was the principal mining method, although flatbacking was employed where ground conditions were more difficult. Developments since have included access via footwall inclines and connection of all stopes with major crosscuts. Flatbacking is the principal method. The most recent cut and fill operation is now fully mechanised using drilling jumbos, rockbolting jumbos and load-haul-dump units. Improved ground support and drilling and blasting practices have enhanced safety, recovery and productivity in all cut and fill operations.

The Sydney Coalfield, Nova Scotia contains extensive undersea longwall mining operations which are expected to continue well into the 21st Century. A long term research program has been initiated by the Cape Breton Coal Research Laboratory to investigate the full spectrum of problems associated with undersea mining and develop specific guidelines for use by the mine operator. At present, research is centred on the detailed evaluation of existing undersea sub- sidence guidelines, the identification and development of instrumentation capable of moni- toring seafloor subsidence profiles and the effective sealing of offshore exploration boreholes. In addition, work is also planned to examine in situ strata permeability changes occurring between the mining horizon and seabed and the feasibility of using artificial islands.

Zinc-aluminium alloy cast matrix composites have been made by squeeze casting, pressure infiltration, spraying forming and stir casting. The overview describes composites made . with these processes. Improvements in properties compared to the conventional alloys are most significant at elevated temperatures. Since stir casting is the most economical viable route of producing composites, progress made in this area is particularly emphasised.

High interest to basic-ultrabasic rocks is ex-plained by their specific, sutural, geotectonic po-sition and by deep level of generation of ultraba-sic magmas. These two factors allow us to treat this group of rocks as valuable source of informa-tion about the lower crust and upper mantle of the Earth. Basic-ultrabasic xenolith series is another source of information about the interior of the Earth. Detailed studies of the xenolith series give valuable material to geologists as to how endogenic deposits are fed and what is their source.Besides, the interest is explained by attempts to understand the relationship between basic-ultra-basic complexes and deposits of metalliferous and non-metalliferous mineral material.Absence of genetic boundaries in manifestation of metalliferous and non-metalliferous minerals, their temporal and spatial relationship allow us to treat the minerogenesis of ultrabasic complexes as a result of one ore-forming process manifested in Koryak-Kamchatsky, Sakhalin-Japanese, Ryukyu-Korean and Taiwan-Philippines island arc systems which re-present, in the opinion of the authors, one eastern Asian chain of the Pacific ore belt (Radkevich, 11)87).

This paper describes an integrated approach to the evaluation of ore loss and ore dilution via geostatistical simulation of in situ geology and grade characteristics, simulation of blasting mechanisms and simulation of loading from a blast muck pile. The approach is demonstrated on a case study. The sequential Gaussian method is used to simulate in situ bench grades on the scale of the smallest selectable volume within a blast muck pile. The simulated grades of these component volumes are interpreted as the reality that would be available with exhaustive sampling. The simulated bench is subjected to a blast simulator, based on the SCRAMBLE model, which effectively moves each of the component model volumes to its final resting place in the blast muck pile. Ore/waste delineation and selective loading processes are applied to the simulated muck pile to determine the degree of selectivity that can be achieved by various sizes of loader and types of loading and to quantify ore dilution and ore loss. An in situ model representing the reality of knowing only the data and information that are available from specific grade control drilling and sampling grids is obtained by sampling the geostatistically simulated model on a specified grid. The volumes comprising the in situ model are then populated by estimates based only on the data and from the specified grade control drilling and sampling grids. Different drilling and sampling grids are used to generate different models, each reflecting the levels of data and information available. Selectivity is assessed as a function of the drilling and sampling grids as well as the size and type of loader. Performance is assessed against the ideal selectivity that could be achieved on the perfect knowledge model comprising the simulated values of each component volume. Costs, prices and financial criteria enable an optimal selection of the grade control drilling grid, size of loader, type of loading and blast design.
