Historical exploration of the Ballarat East goldfield defined two primary quartz vein lode types. Tracking the intersection of these lodes with vertical lines of enrichment (or so-called æindicatorsÆ) was the basic practice for historical mining. This strategy proved highly successful in terms of identifying quartz veins associated with mineralisation. However, it provides little understanding of the timing or processes involved in the formation of these veins, or the associated emplacement of gold. Current underground mapping shows the Ballarat East gold deposit can be subdivided into four stages of vein formation. The earliest veins (V1 and V2) strike north-south and formed during bedding flexural slip and limb thrust fault propagation in parasitic chevron folds. V3 veins are subhorizontal and relate to further fold tightening involving a transition from east-west compression to north-south extension that initiated re-shear of bedded slip surfaces and additional strike-slip faults. Sporadic V4 veins overprint the shallow-dipping sections of V2 and V3 veins and are associated with weak north-south compression. The V4 veins mineralogy is distinguished by a high carbonate content and sphalerite-galena sulfide assemblage. Vein sampling indicates a significant increase in gold mineralisation where overprinting by the later deformation/veining has occurred. As a result of these observations, a new model is emerging that identifies the chronology, structural control and spatial distribution of respective quartz vein types. This is a major advance in terms of exploration targeting, resource modelling and mine planning.

Solid Energy New Zealand (SENZ) uses a 20+ year period for integrated planning of all its business activities. It has an ongoing program of coal resource assessment to optimise future mines within this 20 year period, using a six step resource and mine planning process. Desktop review and conceptual study at preliminary Levels 1 and 2 are based on general coal resource information. Further coal resource investigations are carried out for the more detailed evaluations in secondary assessment, prefeasibility study, feasibility study and detailed engineering from Levels 3 to 6. At Levels 1 and 2, completing conceptual planning, including preliminary resource evaluation and economic appraisal to the target cost uncertainty level of ¦33 per cent, is challenging in New ZealandÆs highly variable geological and geographical conditions. Where coal deposit geometries are relatively simple, approximate methods for determining pit limits using overburden strip ratios, seam thickness, physical boundaries, and quality cut-offs may be sufficient. Many New Zealand coalfields are however complicated structurally, with multiple seams and extensive folding and faulting. Coal seams are characterised by variable dip, thickness, and quality over relatively short distances. In the North IslandÆs Waikato coalfields, coal is typically overlain by weak sediments and clay rich strata that necessitate very flat cut and fill slope angles. The proximity of these deposits to major infrastructure (including towns, highways and rail lines), significant environmental features such as the Waikato river and lakes, and valuable dairy farmland, add further complexity. Traditional preliminary mine planning techniques applied in these conditions are insufficient. Pit optimisation software, widely used in the metalliferous mining industry since the 1980s, offers the ability to analyse many more specific factors affecting pit limits, mine layouts, and economics, with more rigour and for a much larger number of scenarios, than traditional methods allow. SENZ therefore decided to adapt and use æWhittleÆ pit optimisation software for Level 2 analysis of several Waikato opencast prospects. This paper describes this work.

In contrast with previously published models for the carbon-in-pulp (CIP) process, the model proposed in this paper incorporates film transfer, intraparticle diffusion, simultaneous leaching, preg-robbing, the loading of multicomponent species, and the effects of fouling and changing cyanide levels. The rationale behind this comprehensive model is that changes in fouling and competitive adsorption along a CIP cascade affect the profiles of gold loading. As it is impossible to quantify all these non-ideal factors, a method is proposed whereby an imaginary species is postulated so as to combine all the competitive effects. A plant survey at the Telfer mine has shown that the mass loss due to a gravimetric analysis of the fouled carbon could be used directly to quantify this competitive effect. The degradation and consumption of cyanide along the Telfer CIP cascade enhance the loading of copper on to the carbon, which should be taken into account when modelling the gold profiles. It appeared that the effect of cyanide itself on the loading of gold was negligible compared with its effect on the copper. Evidently much more research is required on this topic in order to optimise CIP operations exposed to constantly changing conditions.

The Mako domain comprises the Mako lodes at Sunrise Dam Gold Mine, Western Australia. This domain was initially bulk or æbucketÆ domained for the open pit resource in 2000, due to complexity in defining the lodes as a result of low drill density. Negative ore tonnage and positive grade and ounce reconciliations were experienced during mining of the domain in the mega-pit, though only small volumes of the domain were mined. Significant amounts of exploration and underground grade control drilling has been completed since the initial bulk domain interpretation and greater geological understanding of the mineralisation controls and geology of the lodes now exists. Mako provides approximately 50 per cent of the ore tonnes and ounces for the North Wall Cut-back, the latest open pit phase of mining at Sunrise Dam. The importance of Mako to mill supply and life-of-mine planning, as well as past reconciliation performance necessitated a reinterpretation of the domain to increase confidence for mining. Historic exploration drilling, underground grade control drilling and detailed pit-wall mapping were used to build mineralised subdomains within the confines of the original domain. These reflect more closely the spatial extents and geological controls on the mineralisation. A new resource model using the multiple indicator kriging (MIK) technique was generated using the new domains. It resulted in a decrease in tonnes and ounces but increase in grade for the sum total of the new domains compared to the old æbucketÆ domain. This is attributed to the increased selectivity and structural constraints imposed by the new domains. A retrospective comparison of the Mako grade control from the mega-pit versus the new resource model was conducted, which æreconciledÆ 103 per cent tonnes, 106 per cent grade and 110 per cent ounces. This has provided confidence that the new model is a better estimate of the lodes. Qualitatively, the new model is a better representation of the geology and extent of the mineralised structures with significant areas of change identifiable. Grade-tonnage plots comparing the 2006 and 2008 models show that most tonnes have been shed from the low-grade û subeconomic grade cut-offs. This is mostly attributable to the volume reduction of æoreÆ in the 2008 model compared to the 2006 model, where the true mineralised zones are captured by the new domains. The reinterpretation and remodelling of Mako is an example of an evolved domain model and shows that mineralised zones need to be differentiated adhering to the geology and geological controls on mineralisation, which are understood largely due to increased drilling density coupled with mapping.

The Central Victorian Goldfield is a world-class field located in Victoria, Australia. It is currently undergoing a revival through activities in the Bendigo, Ballarat, Tarnagulla, Maldon, Castlemaine and other fields. Sediment-hosted auriferous gold-quartz reefs that are structurally and geometrically complex dominate the region. To date, no remote methods have been developed to assist in the targeting of the discrete high-grade oreshoots that characterise the mineralisation. An understanding of the structural setting and controls, and thus likely frequency of repetition of oreshoots remains the main exploration tool. Gold within the reefs is generally characterised by both its coarse nature (>100 up to 10 000 microns) and erratic distribution; as a result, most of the Victorian deposits are classed as high- to extreme-nugget effect systems. This characteristic ensures that mineralisation is very challenging to explore, evaluate and exploit. The key issues facing the explorer and miner are related to effective sampling, and definition of geological and grade continuity, and ultimately grade and tonnage. Tonnage can often be estimated to a reasonable level of confidence, whereas the grade estimate generally carries a medium- to high-level of uncertainty. In these deposits, surface diamond drilling alone is generally only able to define an Inferred Mineral Resource, with underground development, closely spaced in-fill drilling and bulk sampling/trial mining required to define Ore Reserves. The extraction of gold from ores is relatively simple, based on the coarse nature and hence amenability to gravity recovery. Ground conditions and the need for in-stope grade control (eg mapping, sampling etc), generally point toward mechanised cut-and-fill as the primary stoping method in the region. To potential investors this style of mineralisation has been viewed as high risk, because of the associated low confidence in the grade estimate, general paucity of Ore Reserves at mining start-up and need for underground development at the Feasibility Stage.

The Bong Mieu Project lies within the Pre-Palaeozoic Kontum Craton near the southern margin of the regional Phuoc Son û Tam Ky Suture. The Suture and accompanying Truongson Fold Belt of Indosinian age host significant gold and base-metal bearing districts including OlympusÆ other project at Phuoc Son to the west of Bong Mieu and OxianaÆs Sepon project in Laos. The Bong Mieu Project is located some 90 km south of Da Nang and some 30 km south-west of Tam Ky, the provincial capital of Quang Nam province in central Vietnam. The project area is covered by an Investment Licence of some 30 km2 which was granted in 1991 and a mining permit of some 365 ha granted in 1992. Several mesothermal, gold-silver deposits with assigned resources are present on the property. Deposits with assigned resources contain some 615 000 ounces of gold in situ. These are at Ho Gan and Ho Ray which are potentially exploitable by open-pit mining and Nui Kem which is potentially exploitable by underground mining. Newly discovered extensions to the known deposits at Ho Gan, Ho Ray and Nui Kem, and several other new prospects, are currently being investigated by drilling. The Ho Gan mineralisation is of mesothermal, shear and shear breccia quartz vein, as well as intrusive breccia hosted style. Nui Kem mineralisation is of mesothermal, shear and shear breccia quartz vein style. The Ho Ray mineralisation is of skarn (gold-bismuth-tungsten) and lesser quartz vein style. The deposits straddle and flank the east-west trending Bong Mieu Anticline which trends through the central portion of the Investment Licence. In this paper the geology of the deposits, details of resources, results of recent exploration on the Investment Licence and recent engineering and mining studies at Ho Gan are briefly reviewed.

Jointed rock mass is often encountered in rock engineering and its stability has always been a major concern in underground engineering. To analyze the stress characteristics and their variations in jointed rocks, in this study, a new concept of sub-instability stage before rock failure is defined, and a new experimental method is used to investigate interaction between defects and intact rock of the jointed rock mass during the subinstability stage., Firstly, external characteristics of stress and failure mode of the whole jointed rock are investigated systematically by conducting uniaxial compression tests on red sandstone samples with a set of preexisting open flaws of different sizes, and the interactive damage of intact parts and defects in the subinstability stage was further studied. Secondly, rock-like material samples made of bonded plaster blocks were tested and internal data from stress sensor between the strong and weak segments were collected. The transforming processes from independent activity of the individual segment to overall interactive movement of jointed rock before the unstable failure were analysed. The test results indicated that the subinstability stage marked the beginning of interactive failure between the intact rock and defects. In the early subinstability stage, the relatively intact parts bore most of the load in a jointed rock mass, and the defects were damaged firstly which caused high strain around it. The areas of high strain increase rapidly, extending and migrating, causing damage to the intact parts. In the later sub-instability stage, the interaction effect reached its maximum, and a large number of cracks appeared in the intact rock and they propagated and coalesced. Intact parts experienced rapid failure and then the jointed rock failed. The experimental method used in this paper to identify the sub-instability stage could be used to identify failure precursors of jointed rock masses and to develop technology for disaster prevention in rock engineering. Block caving is the most economic underground methods for excavating massive orebodies, due to the high productivity and low production costs. The success of block caving operations depends on the fragmentation and draw control as large blocks decrease the equipment efficiency, inhibit the material flow and may lead to expensive secondary blasting. Even though ore handling system design, as well as overall economic results, both critically rely on secondary fragmentation, this parameter continues to be one of the least understood issues in the caving operations.This research focuses on the experimental study of secondary fragmentation, considering the impact of vertical pressures and material flow. Experiments using a load-haul-dump extraction system were conducted under laboratory conditions to quantify the influence of pressure and particle size on secondary fragmentation. Results demonstrate that increasing the vertical pressure (simulating deeper conditions) leads to higher fragmentation (smaller particle size) and greater fines generation during draw. The experimental results were applied to calibrate the developed mathematical model based on kinetic matrix. The acceptable accordance between the comminution model results and the reality showed that this method is convenient in predicting the secondary fragmentation in block caving.CITATION:Castro, R, Gómez, R, Casali, A and Hekmat, A, 2016. Active EM subsurface imaging is a proprietary technique developed by Marschall Acoustics Instruments Pty Limited (MAI) to image subsurface features at depths useful for the mining industry. Similar in field operations to high resolution seismic surveying, the Active EM technique employs electromagnetic energy rather than elastic wave energy. Received backscattered energy in the Active EM technique is thus due to differences and contrasts in electromagnetic permeability and permittivity in the subsurface, analogous to LamTÆs constants in elastic wave imaging. Carrying the analogy to seismic imaging even further, the Active EM method employs high power transmissions of very wide-band coded signals of a controlled polarisation. Likewise, the array pattern and polarisation of the receiving transducers is also tightly controlled. Thus, in a certain mathematical sense, Active EM is the electromagnetic equivalent of high power high resolution vibroseis seismic surveying. An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. This paper deals with the design and implementation of a 17 MW (nominal) surface cooling installation at Impala Platinum No 14 shaft located in Rustenburg, North West Province, South Africa.The cooling requirements included the installation of a surface ammonia refrigeration plant complete with the storage of hot and cold mine service water for underground use. It was also necessary to install a surface bulk air-cooling facility, which cools 400 kg/s of ventilation air going to the underground workings. Primary cooling is to the surface bulk air cooler. The cooling duty of a surface bulk air cooler is heavily dependent on the ambient wet-bulb temperature. Because of the daily wet-bulb temperature variation in this part of the world, use was made of a cold thermal storage facility of four million litres. The excess chilled water is stored during the night, for use by the main drilling shift during the day. This keeps the refrigeration machines as close as possible to full load during the summer, thus maximising the use of the capital expenditure. This paper discusses the control philosophy used to maximise the cooling output, as well as the thermal process. The project consisted of two phases resulting from the underground development phases of the mine. The first phase started in January 1999 and was commissioned by the end of the same year in record time. The final commissioning of the second phase took place at the end of 2002. The most difficult part of the construction phase was the tunnelling of a subsurface air duct from the bulk air cooler to the operating vertical shaft. This was done without disruption to the hoisting of men, material and ore in the shaft. Owing to the size of the refrigeration machines, the ammonia quantities involved and the application on a mine (no ammonia can go underground, either in the service water or in the mine air) special precautions had to be taken. South Africa has developed high standards for ammonia refrigeration plants used on mines, which will be partially dealt with in this paper.

In the mid-1990s, after a long period of antipathy between the company and its detractors, Rio Tinto embarked upon an ambitious cultural change program that sought to transform the fundamental basis of its relationship with global, national and local stakeholders. This has evolved into a broader pursuit of positive cultural change within Rio Tinto as part of the mining industryÆs Sustainable Development initiative. Initially driven from the top down, the communities component of this program comprises an architecture of policies, value statements, social research and verification systems. The commitment to better community relationships is best exemplified in Australia by the scope and scale of the GroupÆs Aboriginal land access agreements, community development programs and the work of the Rio Tinto Aboriginal Foundation. While collectively these form the core elements of an evolving set of internal social competencies, development of second-tier competencies is required to organically embed a culture of sustainable relationships with local and regional communities. Second-tier competencies will include appreciation of social dynamics, social science and diversity at middle management level; rigorous social research that properly informs development options for companies and host communities; career paths and recognition within the mining industry for young professionals both generally and from stakeholder communities; proper community-needs assessments, research into such things as purchasing power and other economics data, and inventories of public goods such as land-carrying capacity and water availability. Without this information it is difficult to gain an appreciation of and to alert people to the consequences of change brought on by a mine. The next decade will see second-tier social competencies promoted within successful mining companies. Measures to achieve this include a range of Human Resource (HR) incentives such as recruitment and career advancement based on broad competencies rather than narrow technical proficiency, humanities training for mining professionals and performance rewards that recognise social competence. A sustainable future for mining in a globally connected social landscape requires selection of people who can listen, relate and act in an open social system. The challenge for the mining industry, its professional organisations and educational institutions is to acknowledge this and develop these new aspects of mining industry professionalism. This cannot be left to individual companies if the industry is to have a sustainable future.

This paper reviews the proportion of energy attributable to comminution within the Australian gold and copper mining sector. The need for this is motivated by inconsistencies in the quoted energy usage data and the lack of a common basis for reporting the fraction of energy in mining that is attributable to comminution. This study should form a reliable basis from which to assess both demand and opportunities to reduce energy consumption.The proportion of milling energy was calculated for the major producers in the Australian gold and copper sector. A sampling methodology created by Powell et al (2003 - 2010) was initially used to provide an accurate and meaningful measure of the energy used in the comminution process. However, no useful method for grouping similar mines was found. Fortunately, a surprisingly large amount of high quality data was found from a number of different sources, allowing the development of robust relationships to be used to estimate a high proportion of the unknown values. The fraction of energy attributable to comminution was found to be dependent on how the total energy consumption was defined. For instance, comminution accounted for 52 per cent of the electrical energy, but only 21 per cent of the total energy publicly reported by the mines because a substantial proportion of energy used on a mine is in the form of transportation fuel (mostly diesel). Critically, the measured electrical energy consumption does not account for transmission and generation losses, while diesel energy usage is typically quoted according to its calorific value. This review proposes that diesel should instead be converted via the mechanical efficiency factor for diesel engines. Using this conversion, comminution was found to account for 36 per cent of the available energy on average. This approach allows a useful basis of comparison for mines regardless of whether milling energy is obtained from electrical or diesel generation. A summary of the results are shown in Figure 7 with other values obtained from literature. The total comminution energy assessed in this study accounts for 1.3 per cent of AustraliaÆs electricity consumption, this figure will increase as the other mineral commodities are added to the study.CITATION:Ballantyne, G R, Powell, M S and Tiang, M, 2012. Melbourne Water (MW) is responsible for a section of existing gravity trunk sewer servicing the Melbourne central business district, Docklands, Port Melbourne and other adjacent areas, known as the Melbourne Main Sewer (MMS). MW has determined that the 2.2 km long 110 year old sewer will not adequately service these areas into the future or provide the level of reliability needed. The Melbourne Main Sewer Replacement project (MMSR) involves the replacement of the MMS with a new gravity sewer main and six key manhole shafts, known as the Melbourne Main Reliever (MMR).The majority of the MMR sewer tunnel is situated south of the Yarra River and will be constructed using an earth pressure balance (EPB) tunnel boring machine (TBM) and will be lined with precast concrete segments. The tunnel will be 2.4 m internal diameter and will have a 1.8 m diameter glass fibre reinforced plastic (GRP) sewer pipe positioned within it. This project represents the first large-scale, modern, mechanised tunnel project in MelbourneÆs Yarra Delta Quaternary sediments. There is little precedence known to the authors of similar scale tunnelling projects in these particular geological units. During the recent detailed investigation and design stages of the project, significant effort has been spent on characterising the geotechnical conditions along the alignment and predicting the effects of the new tunnel on the existing environment. Some of the key design issues that have been identified and managed through the design process include short-term surface settlement due to tunnel excavation and the predicted effects on surface infrastructure, potential spalling of the steel fibre reinforced concrete segments under full TBM ram loads and tunnel lining design in geological units with highly variable stiffness.Construction of the new MMR sewer tunnel is expected to commence in mid-2008 with a capital cost of approximately $160 million. Sewer system commissioning is scheduled for completion by early 2012.

Mineral valuation may appear to be a special field of financial valuation when in fact it is a subset of general investment decision theory. The only significant difference in mineral valuation is that in the case of valuing an on-going mineral asset, ie a mine, often there is no initial capital outlay involved. One is required to determine what the mineral asset as it stands is worth. But this is the same problem as determining the maximum one could pay today and not incur a loss over the life of the asset. In other words one needs to determine the Net Present Value (NPV) of the asset. The two most widely used discounted cash flow methods, NPV and Internal Rate of Return (IRR) came of age with the rapid adoption of the personal computer and spreadsheet programs. The two methods are directly related as the IRR is a special case of NPV. NPV measures the absolute increase in real wealth that can be expected from a certain investment, which makes it particularly suitable for mineral asset valuation, but ignores the efficiency of the investment. In contrast, IRR gives the expected efficiency of the investment but ignores the increase in wealth aspect. IRR has two serious theoretical weaknesses; multiple IRR's and a very rigid assumption about the rate of return of reinvested proceeds, plus if no initial equity expenditure is involved there is no IRR. The choice of the ""hurdle"" rate can also be a problem and in certain circumstances one can obtain different rankings of mutually exclusive projects using IRR and NPV. Although NPV and IRR supposedly measure financial risk, in fact they only address a very narrow area of risk, namely the time value of money given the real discount rate. They side step the issue of what the real discount rate should be and varying degrees of risk. The classical way to establish the real discount rate is to use the weighted average cost of capital.

"The mine geologist’s role in classifying ore from waste during grade control represents a critical link in the mining value chain. Any improvement in the ore/waste selection success rate (thus reduction in misclassification) which can be delivered by the mine geologist represents a value proposition. Improvement achieved without additional operating cost (for example extra drilling and sampling) will directly and immediately add value to the mining operation and therefore clearly must be pursued. Such improvement may be leveraged from existing resource drilling data which are typically less numerous but better quality than the grade control data. They are usually excluded from grade control estimates (termed the ‘base case’ approach here) because of the differences in quality.Various specialised geostatistical tools are available to account for differences in precision and accuracy between data sources during spatial estimation. This paper uses a conditional simulation (CS) case study to assess the benefit of integrating resource data into grade control estimates through ordinary kriging (OK) of pooled data sets, cokriging (CK), and ordinary kriging with variance of measurement error (OKVME) when the grade control data are:unbiased but increasingly imprecisebiased and increasingly imprecise. The premise assumed is that the resource data are unbiased and precise.The paper demonstrates that, if appropriately handled, resource data may be used to improve grade control estimates and thus improve ore/waste selection success without additional operating cost. Where grade control data are imprecise but unbiased it is recommended to integrate resource data using OKVME. This re-appropriates kriging weights from less precise to more precise data locations and improves the grade control estimation precision compared to the base case; it consequently provides an improvement in the grade control selection success rate. If grade control data are associated with significant bias, integration through CK is recommended as the biased data are zero sum weighted. CK consequently provides an unbiased estimate with some improvement in estimation precision compared to the base case and consequently improvement in the ore/waste selection success rate.CITATION:Cornah, A J, 2014. Prediction of rock cuttability by various excavation machines such as tunnel boring machines, road headers, rippers, picks, roller disc cutters, excavators, etc is of major concern to both civil and mining engineers and rock mechanics. In principle, the design of a rock cutting tool is based on achieving maximum excavation with minimum input energy, minimum applied force, minimum equipment weight and volume and, more importantly, minimum tool wear. When a rock material is indented by the force of a cutting tool and then unloaded several material zones form underneath and around the tool. As the tool moves into the rock the volume of its associated rock cavity (ie volume of displaced rock) expands and depending on the indenter's shape various phenomena may occur. Immediately beneath the tool a small zone in which the stress state is more or less hydrostatic, is formed which is underlain by an inelastic, or damaged, material zone. Both size and shape of this damaged zone control the magnitude of the indentation force and the chip formation mechanism during unloading. The rock is unable to store the whole strain energy induced by the tool and consequently the extra energy is expended either in forming new fracture surfaces and/or in plastic deformation in the damaged zone. Therefore, it is not surprising to see that both perfect-elastic and rigid-plastic constitutive models are not generally suitable for modelling indentation of rocks. In contrast elastoplastic constitutive models are more appropriate as they can include both elastic and plastic deformations (Kral et al, 1993). Elastic solutions for several half-space indentation problems can be found in most text books on elasticity and in particular in Timoshenko and Goodier (1951), Sneddon, (1951), Poulos and Davis (1974) and Johnson (1985a). If a failure criterion, eg the Mohr-Coulomb failure criterion, is applied to delimit elastic solutions for indentation problems, a lower bound limit of the applied indentation force (for a given indentation depth) can be estimated. It may be noted that elastic analyses, without any delimiting failure criteria, normally overestimate the indentation force. Plastic solutions for a few indentation problems may be found in Hill (1950), Johnson, (1985a) and Alehossein et al (1992). When analysing the behaviour of indented rocks the choice of an appropriate constitutive model describing effectively the behaviour of the rock at various stages and phases during indentation is a challenging issue. Several questions need to be answered before starting an effective analysis. The first question is of course: Which one of these is more appropriate for modelling zones underneath and around a cutter, elasticity or plasticity theory, continuum damage mechanics or fracture mechanics, and what is the bridging link between these various theories? Which mode is more dominant in fracturing rock, tensile or shear mode? What governs the mechanism of chip formation? What is the function, shape and the behaviour of the pulverised zone that forms just underneath a cutter? Is the hydrostatic stress state assumption reasonable for this zone? How does the rock change during the absorption and dissipation of the input energy and how does the indentation energy vary with rock type and depth of penetration? How can we model the damaged zone under the indenter? Furthermore does a plastic material form beneath the pulverised zone? When and how do radial and ring cracks form around and under an indenter?

Hydrogen-direct-reduction of iron ore in a vertical shaft furnace is a potential process that could significantly reduce CO2 emissions from the steel industry. This approach requires the pelletisation of iron ore fines, which then undergo high temperature induration to strengthen the pellets before they can be fed into the shaft furnace. Here we report on investigations into the disc-pelletisation behaviour of New Zealand titanomagnetite ironsand, and its subsequent induration and hydrogenreduction behaviour. Initial studies focused on the effect on pellet strength of varying ironsand particle size and induration conditions using bentonite and a commercially sourced carboxymethylcellulose binder. Green pellets formed with ironsand of average particle size of 65 μm exhibited optimal strength. The compressive strength of these pellets after induration at 1200°C for 2 hrs in air was measured to be 976 N. Interparticle bonding within the indurated pellets occurs due to a combination of titanohematite recrystallisation (from oxidation of titanomagnetite), and the formation of a liquid bonding phase due to interdiffusion with the bentonite and subsequent melting. Further investigation with various binders showed that a combination of both organic and inorganic binders was essential to achieve optimal pellet strength. Carboxymethyl-cellulose binders provides green strength, whilst inorganic binders such as bentonite promoted high indurated pellet strength. Hydrogen reduction tests in a thermogravimetric furnace showed that all the pellets could achieve a maximum reduction degree of 97 per cent at 1100°C, indicating that the different pellet preparation procedures had no significant effect on reducibility. Pellet recipes developed in this work are now being used to investigate vertical shaft hydrogen-DRI processing of NZ ironsand in a kg-scale laboratory reactor.

Water sprays on mining machines are generally put there to reduce dust; however, research by the Bureau of Mines and others has shown that considerable airflows may also be generated by these sprays. This recognition of water spray-gen- erated air movement led to the "Spray-Fan" - a continuous miner auxiliary ventilation system which was shown to reduce methane peaks by a factor of 15. Recent successes and failures of the Spray Fan are reviewed. More recently, the same principles were used in the design of the "Shearer- Clearer" for reducing dust at longwall shearer operators. The original design was successful; however, a new design is now available which is more practical to install and does a much better job of holding the dust against the face downwind of the shearer. The latest research objective is to eliminate the negative impact of spray- generated air turbulence on continuous miner dust control. Most coal faces in the USA are ventilated in the exhaust mode using "line curtain", and the forward airflow on the side of the heading opposite the curtain is inevitably weak. Air turbulence generated by sprays which are incorrectly located and/or operated at excessive pressures can cause roll back - in which the dust cloud at the face is forced unwind against the ventilation and spreads over the miner cnerator. The general approach to reducing "roll back." is reviewed and art anti-roll back water spray system is presented.

Potential waste rock products from the mining of epithermal deposits in the Hauraki Goldfield are characterised to facilitate their management. Hydrothermally altered andesites and their weathered near surface equivalents have been examined from the Golden Cross, Karangahake and Monawai gold deposits. These materials vary in both their clay content (smectite, illite, kaolinite and chlorite) and the degree of silicification resulting from alteration and weathering. The simulated degradation (slaking tests) of waste materials cannot be explained purely by consideration of clay content, siliciflcation, or the resultant variations in porosity.   Microstructure is considered to be essential in predicting the physical degradation of waste rock. The scanning electron microscope is an effective tool in such an investigation. Increasing alteration results in clay particles becoming more randomly orientated (matrix microstructure); this causes a reduction in the surface area of contacts between components resulting in increased potential for degradation. The extent of skeletal microstructure (commonly characteristic of weathering) is an important control on effective porosity and the long term potential for degradation. Management requirements for these materials include the minimisation of moisture content variations (with the prevention of initial drying being of primary importance) and the containment of sediments produced.

The Macraes mine is producing 175 000 ounces Au/year from a mesothermal deposit with total resource of at least five million ounces. The deposit is hosted in greenschist facies Otago Schist, a widespread Mesozoic metasedimentary sequence that forms the basement of the South Island of New Zealand. Mineralisation was controlled by a late metamorphic shear zone which had both brittle and ductile structures accompanying mineralisation. The shear zone dips shallowly (about 15¦), subparallel to the shallow-dipping regional foliation, and mineralization occurred during southwesterly-directed thrust motion. Mineralisation occurred under greenschist facies conditions (about 350¦C) during uplift of the Otago Schist in the late Jurassic. No syn- or late-metamorphic igneous bodies occur within the schist belt. The hosting shear zone is up to 120 m thick, and is traceable for more than 30 km along strike. The shear zone is truncated by an underlying low angle normal fault that juxtaposes mineralised lower greenschist facies rocks on to unmineralised upper greenschist facies rocks.
