Over the past several years, copper prices have surged from under a dollar to over three dollars a pound. However, the long-run trend in real copper prices since at least the early 1970s has been sharply downward. While many now contend that the long-run trend in real copper prices is now upward, the result of structural changes in this market, others are sceptical. Nor is copper unique; the prices for a number of other metals, including aluminium, iron ore, lead, nickel and zinc, have followed similar patterns. This paper examines the forces behind short-run and long-run trends in metal prices. It first focuses on the short run, where it argues that shifts in demand are largely behind changes in prices. It then turns to the long run, where it concludes that production costs and supply largely govern price trends. Finally, it explores several implications of these findings, including those for diversification and market risk, for forecasting mineral prices, for assessing the growth of metal demand in China and elsewhere on metal prices, and for changes in the long-run price trends.

Geologists employed by Metals Exploration Pty. Ltd. discovered nickel enrichment at Greenvale, 180 kilometres West of Townsville, in 1967. Subsequent drilling proved an ore body containing 45 million dry tonnes of ore containing an average of 1.5% nickel and 0.11% cobalt. The Freeport Minerals Company, who had experience in treating lateritic nickel ore, were invited to participate in development of the ore body. This resulted in the formation of the operating company Queensland Nickel Pty. Ltd., jointly owned by Freeport Queensland Nickel Inc. and Metals Exploration Queensland Pty. Ltd. With the completion of successful pilot plant testing of Greenvale ore at the Freeport research facilities at Belle Chasse, Louisiana, a treatment plant was constructed at Yabulu, 24 kilometres North West of Townsville. A 225 kilometre railway line was built connecting the Greenvale Mine and Yabulu Treatment Plant. The ore reduction and ammonia/ammonium carbonate leaching flowsheet is similar to that constructed and operated by the Freeport Minerals Company during World War II at Nicaro, Cuba. The treatment plant of the Gold Mines of Kalgoorlie Ltd. is situated on the Oroya South Lease, on the Eastern edge of the Kalgoorlie Golden Mile.It was designed and erected by Messrs. Alex. Stewart and Company, in consultation with Mr. Harry Hey, and was completed in November, 1937.Its original capacity was 9,000 tons of all-sulphide ore per calendar month, l?ut the plant was extended in October, 1939, to treat 13,000 to 14,000 tons per month of mixed sulphide and oxidised ore.Recovery of the gold is accomplished by cyanide treatment, followed by flotation of the cyanided residue, roasting and cyanidation of flotation concentrate and precipitation of the gold from the cyanide solutions. In the cyanide section, the crushed ore is finely ground in cyanide ,solution and the pulp is agitated to dissolve further gold. It is then thickened and filtered. In the flotation section, this filter residue is conditioned with S02 gas and a pyrite-gold concentrate recovered by flotation.This concentrate is roasted and then cyanided.KALGOORLIE ORE DEPOSIT.The Kalgoorlie ore deposit occurs within a wide area of Pre-Cambrian rocks, ,and consists essentially of two series of basic igneous rocks known as the older greenstone series (calc schist) and the younger greenstone series (quartzdolerite- greenstone) . A Conveyor Belt Fire Test Program was initiated in 1985 by the Approval and Certification Center (A&CC), Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA), U.S. Department of Labor. The purpose was to evaluate the effect of entry air velocities on the burning properties of mine conveyor belts and assess fire test data from large- and small-scale tests. Belts meeting the fire-resistant standards of MSHA and agencies of other countries were tested in small- and large- scale fire tests.

Century, a major shale hosted zinc deposit in the Riversleigh Fold Zone of northwest Queensland's Mount Isa Basin, was discovered by CRA Exploration in 1989. A total of 322 drill holes, completed by the end of 1992, define a resource of 118 Mt of mineralisation averaging 10.2 per cent zinc, 1.5 per cent lead and 36 grams per tonne silver. Mineralisation is developed in the upper portion of Lawn Hill Formation Unit 4 (Pmh4). The intersection of the Termite Range and Little Range Faults, major regional structures, may have been important in controlling mineralisation development. Three listric normal faults, and an unconformity between Proterozoic rocks hosting mineralisation and overlying Cambrian carbonates, divide the deposit into three distinct blocks. The deposit is essentially blind, outcropping in only two places. The deposit is characterised by an extremely simple sulphide mineral assemblage, sphalerite being the most common sulphide phase. Pyrite, the most common phase in many other shale-hosted zinc-lead deposits, accounts for only five per cent of all sulphides present. Siderite is the principal non-sulphide phase present. Both sphalerite and galena have near stoichiometric compositions. Sulphides are confined to carbonaceous shale horizons. Intervening siltstones are essentially barren. Shale and siltstone beds forming the mineralised sequence can be correlated across the entire deposit area. Systematic grade variation occurs within each mineralised shale bed. Although sulphide laminae parallel primary lithologic layering, the point of most intense mineralisation development transgresses stratigraphy. Bituminous material is intimately associated with sulphide mineralisation.

On 20 December 1983 at 8.40am blast- hole 57 of Blast RN177 prematurely detonated follwed by a violent deflagration of blast- hole 59 at 10.40am. The blastholes were 380mm diameter drilled in black pyritic Mt McRae shale. The blastholes were loaded with ANFO and primed. Blasthole 57 was stemmed and blasthole 59 was not. A poss- ible mechanism which could lead to such a detonation is described. preliminary tests showed the top 5m of a bench had the highest temperature which could not be influenced by a range of treat -ments. Small scale laboratory tests show- ed that zinc oxide (ZnO) and magnesium carbonate (Mg2CO3) inhibited the reaction. A series of tests using AN with and without inhibitors loaded into the collars of blast -holes drilled in the top 6m of the bench and unstemmed is described. An analysis of the time to reaction of the holes loaded with AN against temperature shows that the decomposition of the AN in contact with the black pyritic shale is probably a sulphuric acid catalysed react- ion. All the inhibitors tested can neut- ralise the sulphuric acid in the shale. 10% ZnO appears to be an effective inhibitor of the reaction providing the AN/ZnO (90/10) is kept out of contact with surface material whose temperature can be as high as 60¦C in summer. It is concluded that ANFO/ZnO (90/ 10) should be now tested in stemmed holes.

The 1980s witnessed a major revolution in the application of airborne geophysics to mineral exploration. The now commonplace term `high resolution aeromagnetics' (HRA) evolved from advances in survey specifications, instrumentation, data processing and imaging techniques which greatly improved the quality and geological information content of the final maps. Although initially HRA was successfully applied in `hard rock' basement terrains, eg the Archaean Yilgarn Craton of Western Australia, the technique along with the radiometric and electromagnetic techniques is now gaining wide acceptance in all geological terrains including inaccessible sedimentary rock dominated mountain belts such as New Guinea for mineral and petroleum exploration. It is also being used in more and more diverse roles away from exploration, such as environmental monitoring. The main reason for this acceptance is of course the very cost-effective surface and sub-surface mapping capabilities of the various airborne techniques. Although the three main techniques (magnetic, radiometric and electromagnetic) have been in use for some time, they are continuously being improved. The presence of platinum metals in the nickeliferous copper ore of the Thomson River Copper Mine near Walhalla, Victoria, was first revealed in 1905 by assays made in the laboratory of the Department of Mines (1).These disclosed the presence in the ore of 5 dwt. platinum metals, 1 dwt. gold and 13 dwt. silver per ton. Attempts to isolate the platinum-bearing mineral were unsuccessful, and the absence of obvious native platinum led the assayer, Mr. P. G. W. Bayley, to suspect that the platinum might be present as sperrylite. Subsequently, Mr. C. M. Lyons, then metallurgist to the Long Tunnel Gold Mining Company, Walhalla, tried to isolate the platinum mineral from samples of ore containing as much as 7 dwt. platinum metals, but again without success.In 1912, a sample of copper matte from this ore was submitted to Messrs. Johnson, Matthey and Company, Limited of London, for analysis. The analysis, which is quoted below by their courtesy, revealed tnat a large proportion of the metal pi'eviously reported as platinum was palladium, there being about two parts of palladium in the matte to one part of platinum.

The Nagambie heap leach gold mine commenced production of gold in September, 1989. The mine,120km north of Melbourne in Victoria, Australia, was developed by Perseverance Mining Cor- poration Ltd, a junior Australian mining company, with no other operating mines. Gold production to December 31, 1990 was 47,621 oz. The mine is now producing at the rate of about 45,000 oz per year. As of February 28, 1991, resources at the mine are 5.1 million tonnes measured, at 0.65g/t Au while reserves were 1.65 million tonnes at 0.86g/t Au of proven, heap leach ore, plus 0.37 million tonnes at 0.40g/t Au, of dump leach ore. Metallurgical recoveries expected are 80 per cent for the heap ore and 60 per cent for the dump ore. Perseverance Mining Corporation was listed on the Australian Stock Exchange on April 2, 1987, after a capital raising in March that year. At this time the company's issued capital was 4 million ordinary 25ó shares, 3 million of which were issued to the public to raise $0.75 million.

Adaptive mineral processing has to rely on spatially predicted information on primary geometallurgical parameters, like phase composition, size and shape distributions of grains from various phases, portions of value elements in different grain types. Naively, one would predict these parameters geostatistically and select an optimal processing for the predicted structure. This is suboptimal, due to various kinds of non-linearities in the problem. First, some primary geometallurgical quantities themselves are measured in non-real scales, like compositional or stereologically distorted geometric information. Standard geostatistics has to be replaced by compositional and geometric geostatistics, involving complex transforms and restrictions. Further, only partial and uncertain information is available, introducing a stochastic character to the optimisation problem. Moreover, many response variables leading to costs, outcomes and eventual effects of later processing depend non-linearly on the primary geometallurgical parameters, which implies that the final monetary value is not estimated unbiasedly by kriging. Finally unbiased linear prediction (such as kriging) is not the best method of prediction for decision making. The conditional expectation of the monetary values is needed instead. The impact of these problems is explained in this paper, with simplified examples, and a first approach to a general solution is proposed. In 1874 a stockman, JE Wright of Foxlow Station, recognised copper mineralisation when he was about 12 kilometres south of the station. The find was on the banks of the Molonglo River. Several small mines were soon operating along the ridge above the river, and the village of Captain's Flat was established.One mining company established in the 1880s was Lake George Mines. It's name was to remain synonomous with the name of the town until mining and treatment ceased on 11 March 1962.

The kinetics of desorption of nitrogen from molten iron were investigated using the electromagnetic levitation technique. The respective influences of gas flow rate and surface active element (S) were examined. A second order behaviour with respect to the nitrogen concentration in the melt prevailed at all experimental conditions. Sulphur had a marked inhibiting effect on the desorption rate. The experimental results on the rates of nitrogen desorption have been interpreted with the aid of a reaction mechanism consisting of a sequence of elementary steps.

Precious metal mineralization at the North Arm goldfield in SE Queensland occurs in the Triassic North Arm Volcanics, a sequence of andesite to rhyolite, pyroclastic and epi- clastic rocks deposited in a continental envir- onment. This unit displays a well-defined fracture system on Landsat imagery, including several arcuate structures which may represent former calderas. Two of the latter are associ- ated with zones of hydrothermal alteration, breccias and anomalous precious and volatile metal values. At the North Arm prospect, alter- ation is zoned from outer propylitic into exten- sive sericitic, although K-feldspar alteration is prevalent in the rhyolite. A zone of advanced argillic alteration is also present at Mt. Ninderry, SSE of North Arm. Alteration involves depletion of Na, Ca and Sr, and vari- able enrichment of S, As, Au, Ag, Hg and Mo. K and Rb are strongly enriched in K-feldspar altered zones. Precious metal mineralization occurs in veins, stockworks and hydrothermal breccia zones, and pervasive low grade Au-Ag dispersion is found throughout the sericitic and K-feldspar altered rocks. Veins and brec- cia interstices contain abundant quartz (common- ly banded), minor pyrite, calcite and sericite, with traces of silver grading to electrum, frei- bergite, naumannite, allargentum, marcasite, chalcopyrite and sphalerite. Mineralogical and geochemical characteristics are consistent with that found at volcanic-hosted epithermal precious metal deposits, particularly with the low-sulphur/adularia-sericite type.

The history of world nickel production has been affected significantly by the supply and demand situation and fluctuation of LME price of nickel metal. In the beginning of the 1980s, the decline of price and demand lead to the withdrawal of un-competitive producers and the shrinkage of the production capacity. During the same period, Sumitomo Metal Mining maintained the production level with continuous improvement of the traditional matte electrorefining process. However, Sumitomo has recognised that the continuous improvement alone does not promise us the ability to catch up with rapid changes in the world. In the meantime, Sumitomo intensively researched chloride hydrometallurgy and has developed the chloride process for the nickel refining. This includes the solvent extraction and chloride electrowinning in the mixed sulphide process and the chlorine leach of the anode slime arising from matte electrorefining. In the late-1980s, Sumitomo Metal Mining decided to develop a new nickel refining technology based on chloride hydrometallurgy. The new process was designed from the comprehensive aspects involving safety and the environment. Construction of the plant for the matte chlorine leach electrowinning (MCLE) process was commenced in 1991. The MCLE plant with a capacity to 2000 tonnes per month has been commissioned at Niihama since 1992. The process has provided high productivity, overall good economics and high quality of electrolytic nickel produced. After the establishment of the process, Sumitomo has maintained continuous improvement of the new process and has attained the best practice of the work classification.

Regional conceptual and grassroots exploration by Epithermal Gold Pty Ltd. during the latter part of 1984 resulted in the virgin discoveryof the Mt. Fullstop Gold property located 115 kilometres west of Townsville, North Queensland. A major compilation of Epithermal, Hotsprings and Bonanza gold ores of volcanic association as defined by Lindgren in 1933 Ind refined by Buchanan and Eimon was reviewed. The geologic characteristics observed at Mt. Fullstop were found to be similar to those recorded with some S.W. United States gold Deposits.

The Luzon arc extends for about 900 km from Taiwan to the island of Mindoro (central Philippines); in this area late Tertiary to Recent volcanism is considered to be the result of eastward subduction along the Manila Trench. The arc is composed of five segments, all of which have individual characteristics with respect to tectonic setting and magma chemistry (Defant et al., 1989). From the north to the south these are (Fig. 1): (1) the eastern Coast Ranges of Taiwan and the islands Lan-Hsu and Lu-Tao (Taiwan Segment), (2) the islands off the north coast of Luzon (Babuyan Segment), (3) the Northern Luzon Segment, (4) the Bataan Segment, and (5) the Mindoro Segment. Defant et al. (1988) suggest that the Bataan and Mindoro segments of the arc, both of which are characterized by different isotopic compositions and levels of large ion lithophile element (LILE) enrichment in the lavas, are separated by a 'pull-apart' zone, the Macolod Corridor.We are currently studying the mineralogy and petrochemistry of Late-Miocene to Pliocene volcanism in the Northern Luzon Segment (NLS), which comprises the geographic area of the Cordillera Central. This area has so far received limited attention, inspite of its wealth of porphyry copper, skarn and epithermal gold deposits. In this contribution we report the first results of our study of igneous rocks from the Mankayan Mineral District (MMD) which is located in the centre of the arc segment under consideration.

THE following paper is a description of the plant and operations of the above company in their recovery and treatment of the quartz tailings deposited as final residues by the various mining companies. at Waihi, Karangahake, and Waitekauri into theOhinemuri River. During the past few years the silting of the Ohinemuri River has increased to such an extent as to cause considerable interest and discussion, and has lately been the subject of a most extensive inquiry by a Royal Commission, to consider the best means of dealing with what is generally spoken of as a public nuisance.Ever since the commencement of mining in this district, which was opened as a goldfield in 1875, the various mines operating have been discharging their tailings into this river, it having been proclaimed a sludge channel in 1895. Up to the year 1900 the quantity of quartz crushed was not large, probably not exceeding 500,000 tons; but since that date the annual tonnages discharged have increased enormously, and at the present time would total from 550,000 to 600,000 tons per year. Records show that up to the end of 1910 at least 5,000,000 tons have been crushed, for an actual yield of bullion considerably exceeding £10,000,000 in value, and all the valuable tailings from...

This paper aims to provide some' new and original thoughts on tungsten carbide drill-bits and describe practices and performances, some of which are unique and most of which have not previously been described. Many theoretical and descriptive papers and articles on carbide bits have appeared during the last few years, and in the big majority conclusions such as these were made. These results are marked by premature failure of the bits, or The full or economic life of the bit is seldom reached due to the premature failure of the insert. Unfortunately those conclusions are seldom accompanied by the reasons for premature failure. In the few cases where reasons for failure have been advanced, very little, originality has been shown. The reasons usually given are that the failures are due to bad operators, bad workmanship, faulty steel or unsuitable machines, but it has been shown at Mount Isa that the chief reason for poor performnce is bad design.The first question asked will be, "What is wrong with the design of most bits?" and the answer'is, "The size of' the inserts". There may be many other small faults iiI different types of bit but Mount Isa experience indicates that the size of the insert is the most important factor influencing pit life. Under normal conditions it has been found, that there is a minimum size of insert that will give satisfactory performance, and this minimum is 5/16 in width and ? in. depth at the shoulder. A big majority of the bits at presentavailable in Australia do not satisfy these requirements.

Comminution of solids is surely one of the oldest technologies which even in this day and age of DNAs, chips and space exploration continues to challenge our scientific acumen and engineering ingenuity. In essence, this challenge is two-fold. One, as much as three to four per cent of all electric power generated world-wide is consumed in crushing and grinding primarily because the utilisation of energy is woefully poor. Studies have shown that the efficiency of mechanical size reduction processes is of the order of 1.5 to 12 per cent only (Schoenert 1986). Two, with the grinding technologies available to us, we have, at best, inadequate and, at worst, almost negligible control over the shape of the comminuted particles, size dispersion of the ground mass, and the sharpness of mineral liberation. Low energy efficiency and lack of control in the sense mentioned above have far-reaching implications for resource conservation, performance of down stream unit operations, and damage to the environment. Our problem is in fact central to the mineral-energy resources triangle shown in Figure 1 which depicts the close interrelationships among mineral resources which are becoming poorer in content and more complex in mineralogy each day, energy resources which are depleting rapidly without any viable alternate on the horizon, and environmental concerns which can no longer be ignored. It is evident that any improvement in the efficiency of the comminution process impacts directly on the control of environmental damage, conservation of energy and the economics of the operation. These concerns have special relevance for the processing of non-ferrous ores.
