The topaz resource at Torrington in northern N.S.W is currently the subject of a joint research and development programme managed by Pacific Copper Ltd, This programme has culminated in a pilot topaz calcination plant, located at Parramatta, which, through its operation, will establish the commercial viability of developing this mineral as an industrial raw material for both the refractory and fluoride chemical industries.

Aspects of the formation, decomposition and acid solubility of zinc ferrite were examined to find potential ways of increasing the recovery of zinc from a calcination process of mineral concentrates. Ferrite can begin to form within 2 hours at 450¦C. while complete reaction can occur after 35 minutes at 700¦C. The nature of the starting materials has a pronounced effect on the rate of formation and below 700¦C. ZnSO4 and Fe2O3 proved to be the least reactive of the materials investigated. It is possible that iron in a mineral admixed h sphalerite can be converted to a relatively inactive form, however, it does not seem possible to prevent zince f formation when iron is in the sphalerite lattice. At the two temperatures examined, 650¦C. and 700¦C, the presence of SO2 in the atmosphere accelerate .e formation of ferrite. Prolonged exposure to such atmospheres, however, caused the ferrite to decompose to ZnSO4 and Fe203. The optimum temperature for decomposition was 650¦C. and it was virtually complete within 2 hours in an atmosphere of 10% SO2 in air. Zinc ferrite was also decomposed by CO at low concentrations, and by heating with limestone at 1000¦C. for at least 2 hours. The solubility of zinc ferrite in acid was influenced by the starting materials used. As both the reaction temperature and the time at temperature increased the acid solubility decreased. The Peak Gold Mines Pty Ltd (PGM) operations are located approximately 9 km south of Cobar, NSW. PGM currently mines and treats ore from three separate orebodies within 5 km of the original plant. Production from the original Peak orebody ceased in April 2002, with ore currently sourced from underground at New Occidental and Perseverance, while New Cobar supplies ore from an open cut mine. In March 2003, Wheaton Minerals Asia Pacific purchased the operation from Rio Tinto who operated the mine for around ten years. The Perseverance deposit is situated between 600 and 1000 m south of the Peak orebody. Access is via shaft from Peak to 630 m below surface and then by decline to the northern end of the deposit locally known as Zone A. Development of the resource commenced mid 2002 to set up for a long hole open stoping operation at 25 m level spacing. The first production stope was successfully brought on line December 2003. The Perseverance deposit is hosted by sediments and volcanics along the eastern margin of the Devonian Cobar basin and is one of many deposits with the Cobar Gold Field. The Cobar Gold Field has produced approximately 2.5 million ounces of gold since 1880. The Perseverance area had long been considered prospective due to the presence of old workings at the southern extensions of Peak line of lode. Significant mineralisation was first discovered at Perseverance in 1994 when PGM drilled a hole targeted 950 m below the historic workings. The target was based on an apparent plunge to the stratigraphic controls to the Peak Orebody. Subsequent exploration within and around the ægreaterÆ Perseverance area has been significantly aided through the use of downhole electro-magnetic surveys due to the close spatial association between gold and sulfide mineralisation.

There are many small to medium carbonate hosted complex zinc containing deposits where the zinc is not economically recoverable either as concentrate or metal. High grade (>20% Zn) run of mine ore can be processed but even this material gives relatively poor returns. Considerable effort has gone into developing new technology for either upgrading the ore and/or recovering zinc metal hydrometallurgically but there has been limited success. Minetometal has developed a process capable of economically treating these deposits to give marketable lead and zinc products. This paper reviews alternative processes for these ores and gives a detailed description of the Minetometal Process. CITATION: Shaw, R, 2018. Depending on the geological setting, waste rock from mining can present risks to achieving acceptable closure outcomes. In the Pilbara iron ore mines, the majority of waste rock is geochemically inert. However, small percentages of pyritic material with the potential to generate acid and metalliferous drainage (AMD) require considered management within mine waste stockpiles designed to minimise AMD release to the environment. The George Fisher Underground Mine at Mount Isa applies the long hole open stoping methodology. During the reconciliation process of transverse stopes in the George Fisher North mine it was identified that excessive underbreak was regularly experienced, with the major contribution coming from the toe area inside the stope.While over break and the resultant dilution was well investigated and well understood, limited work was done on underbreak improvement. It was decided that a re-engineering process would be followed in an attempt to improve results. The prevailing stoping practices were scrutinised and the possible causes were listed.Some of the identified causes were design, drilling accuracy, equipment condition, mucking practices and direction of firing. It was identified that in most instances the underbreak was initiated in the slot area of the stope during the first firings. Once this happened, it was impossible to get good recoveries on the rest of the stope. The slot area was carefully scrutinised and the blasting practices were changed individually.During the following two years several different strategies were trialled to increase the toe recoveries. The results indicated an overall improvement of six per cent reduction in underbreak on average, by ensuring drilling accuracy and changing the direction of firing. The economic significance of these results outweighed the time and additional work load expended to establish the cause of the problem. This paper outlines the continuous improvement process undertaken to identify and rectify the major contributing factors to the problem. It also presents a set of recommendations to be followed in order to achieve positive results.

Morro Agudo is an underground zinc and lead mine owned by Nexa Resources. The mine uses room and pillar as the main mining method. The recovery of pillars as well as the opening of new excavations using sublevel stoping as mining method has been studied. On some occasions, the need to recover pillars and open a stope by using the sublevel method happens in a region that is already excavated or in deeper areas than those mined so far. These changes represent a major geotechnical challenge due to the complex openings of the mine and interaction between two different mining methods. Historically, geotechnical mapping, kinematic analysis and a 2D numerical model were used to evaluate the new mine openings, and in 2021, 3D numerical model was introduced, which enabled global and local assessment of new excavations impact and the stability of openings after recoveries. The 3D model, made with MAP3D, is used to evaluate each pillar to be recovered, considering the spans of the resulting openings, the ideal sequencing of removal to maintain stability, in addition to the impact and geometry of the pillars left in the chambers. Pillar recoveries done in 2021 and the impact of it on the pillars left were the sources of the back analysis to calibrate parameters inputted on numerical model to assess recovery on new chambers and Phyllite has been considered into the model and it has been a source of instability due to its parallel position to roof of room and pillars and stope hanging walls.

The terms measured resources and proven reserves denote the highest level of estimation confidence in all of the major classification schemes. But what do they really bring to today’s project or mine with respect to production planning and expectations? Initial reserve declaration does not need measured resources, just indicated resources. Economic viability of a project is assessed on total reserves with nary a bonus for the amount of proven reserves. Production plans are based on grade and tonnage goals that may only coincidently correspond to proven reserves. So are the measured and proven categories still relevant? Historically, and almost exclusively in underground mines, companies only allowed mining in areas of proven reserves. Some companies still follow that philosophy. But many others will mine a mixture of probable and proven reserves without hesitation. Also what of the undeveloped project in a new district – what is to be made of their declared measured resources and proven reserves? Measured resources are commonly set either by some type of proximity to data scheme or a matter of ‘feel’ based on the qualified person’s experience. The parameters for reserve conversion focus on the project as a whole and then a portion becomes classified as proven reserves almost solely based on whether the resource category is measured. So should the mining industry continue to use these categories of resource and reserve classification? This paper will present arguments about making these categories once again more relevant. A more disciplined usage of these categories may re-introduce their relevancy in public disclosures of resources and reserves. As well a more consistent usage in operations may lead to increased confidence in managing production targets and costs.

Recent studies in the Archaean of the Kalgoorlie-Norseman area show that the layered rocks can be subdivided into two main units, both containing basic igneous rocks and sediments. The lower unit is distinguished by the presence of acid volcanic flows and sills. In some areas, clastic sediments become coarser and,pas-s into conglomerates. This passage is accompanied by thinning of the beds. These features and their distribution suggest a basin of subsidence flanked-by areas of shallow-water deposition. -.

Preparing for automated sample preparation has two facets; the need for better procedures as seen by the laboratory Manager and the approach to be adopted as envisaged by the equipment manufacturer. Both have many options and during the 1990s some at least of these options will be tried. As automation of sample preparation is only just beginning, can it be said that there is a real need for better procedures. What does automated sample preparation have to offer? Does it have real advantages or is it just a marketing tool to sell equipment?

The use of photogrammetry has greatly increased the accuracy of 3D mapping underground. However, this has not reduced the need or desire for geologists to produce plans and sections showing an interpretation of the mapped geology. At the Waihi Underground Gold Mine, a hybrid solution has been developed that utilises the accuracy of photogrammetry and mapping onto face photos with the CAD-based Deswik.MappingTM functions to create plan and section maps. These have the benefit of looking like traditional paper maps but are more spatially accurate and richly attributed with metadata that can be filtered and exported to downstream processes. Deswik.MappingTM is a tablet-based solution that allows the geologist to map digitally with a stylus. Automation is utilised for the updating of survey as-builts, approved designs, drill holes, geological mapping, vein interpretations and mine work areas, reducing the requirement to print out maps at various locations and scales. Having 3D mine software on a tablet device provides a wealth of features not available when using paper: scaling is a problem of the past; information can be turned on and off; features can be viewed in 3D; and measurements between points of interest can be calculated in 3D space, for example, between vein wireframes and drill hole sample information. A suite of custom scripts has been developed that take the spatially accurate, registered and attributed polyline data from photogrammetry scans and converts them to a geological mapping legend with vein textures, structural information, and lithological boundaries. These 3D maps can be plotted in plan or section view and satisfy the requirements of the most ardent paper map supporter.

"In a climate characterised by an ever increasing focus on cost reduction and maximising the utilisation of existing assets and infrastructure, understanding the uncertainty associated with alternative investment and operational choices becomes paramount to minimising the risk of making an ineffective decision. To assist in this process, TSG Consulting has developed an analytic framework to capture the underlying complexity of a mineral supply chain, and then quantify the impact of the uncertainty associated with the key drivers of business productivity. The technical basis of this approach follows three distinct steps: analyse the current system and identify the major factors that drive value build detailed models that can measure the response of the system to potential changes in the factors identified quantify the sensitivity of financial and capacity forecasts to these factors.Each of the above steps draws on a different area from the field of applied analytics, namely: data analytics dynamic modelling and designed experimentation meta-modelling and optimisation.Following the three-step approach described above ensures a rigorous modelling and analysis process is executed to support strategic mine planning decisions. The approach is equally applicable to the analysis of fully integrated system supply chains (pit-to-port), the evaluation of incremental capital investments to targeted areas of a supply chain, or when considering revisions to the operating philosophy of a system in the short term. The basis of each of the three analytic steps is explored in detail in this paper. Although the effects of sea level changes on ore concentration processes are to some extent obvious with certain deposits, e.g. beach placer deposits, they have been largely overlooked with others such as Mississippi Valley type lead-zinc deposits. It is contended that sea level variations may have more profound effects on a wide range of deposits than has previously been appreciated. These deposits include not only placer'and residual deposits but also stratiform copper deposits, Mississippi Valley type deposits, stratiform manganese deposits and Minette type iron deposits. Sea levels in paralic basins profoundly affect the influx of 'detrital sediment, and this has to be suppressed to allow for the accumulation of thick rich deposits of coal evaporites, phosphate or metalliferous sediment. Emergence can be associated with oxidized waters, erosion, and,solution of soluble rocks. Submergence can reverse the Eh trend and can lead to preservation of ores. Both realms of surficial sedimentary environments and subsurface diagenetic environments can be affected by changes in water pressure, gas pressure (pC02), Eh, pH, and temperature as sea levels fluctuate. Even relatively small sea level changes may have profound effects. For example, there is some evidence to suggest that when the level dropped below 100 metres about 10,000 years ago, the Red Sea became isolated by the sill at Bab el Mandeb in the south, and evaporated away to leave a series of shallow lakes. The Red Sea is 1 to 2 km deep. It was at times such as this that the well-known copper-zinc mineralization developed in the Red Sea trough. Changes in sea level also affect the stability field of gas hydrates which can yield large volumes of gas leading to mass movements on the sea floor (Warnke, 1986).

Iron ore sintering is very complex with many interdependent variables. For the same ores, the sinter quality and sintering performance may vary significantly with the scale at which the sintering tests are conducted. Therefore it is important to understand the effect of test scale on sintering performance and sinter quality while interpreting the test results. In this paper, different scales of iron ore sintering research at CSIRO are described and compared. This is followed by the results of two sinter blends tested at different scales. The results are compared and correlated to demonstrate the benefits of iron ore sintering research at the laboratory (4 g), small (5 - 8 kg) and pilot (55 - 140 kg) scales.

The relationships between Aboriginal Traditional Owners and mining companies have often been mired in dispute, particularly since the High Court Mabo decision and the Native Title Act of 1993. In the Pilbara region, Rio Tinto Iron Ore (RTIO) impacts the traditional country of 12 Aboriginal Traditional Owner/language groups. Over the past 12 years the company and the Traditional Owners have negotiated and settled several significant land use agreements including the Yandi Land Use Agreement over the Yandicoogina mine in 1997, between Hamersley Iron (now Rio Tinto Iron Ore) and three language groups û the Bunjima, Nyapaili and Innawonga people and the Eastern Guruma Indigenous Land Use Agreement (ILUA) of 2006. These substantive agreements are now being followed by a new generation of region wide ILUAs which are close to conclusion. Arising from these regional agreements is a new framework for engagement which has been informed by the implementation of the previous agreements in the Pilbara and across the Rio Tinto group of companies. They are driven by both a company desire to have a consistent approach to engaging with Traditional Owners and the Traditional Owners wanting to have a similarly transparent and consistent standard of performance by the company in implementing the agreements which can deliver improved employment, cultural heritage engagement and direct and indirect benefits for the life of mining by the company. During the past three years the growth in the Pilbara, Western Australia brought new opportunities with people flocking to the region for employment flowing from the mining boom. Housing was at a premium and FIFO (fly-in, fly-out employment arrangements) was developed as a method to manage the general growth and demand for skills. Despite the recent down turn in the world economy since September 2008, which has reduced demand for minerals, the Pilbara continues to enjoy high levels of employment and as a result there is still significant pressure on housing and services provision. Although there has been vast economic growth in the Pilbara not only by mining companies but also oil and gas companies, the 2006 census data indicated that the direct benefits of improved employment, business development and engagement in the mainstream economy continued to exclude Aboriginal people. Indigenous people constitute a significant proportion of the population in the Pilbara region, some 6000 people û currently 14 per cent of the population rising to 18 per cent by 2015 û yet they remain at the bottom of the socioeconomic scale. More than 40 years of mining has returned relatively little to this group of people who are the permanent residents of the region and are connected through their traditional culture to this country (Taylor and Scambary, 2005). Ensuring local Aboriginal participation in the mainstream economy has been a challenge for resource companies, Traditional Owners and local residents in the Pilbara. The case study explores the relationship between a mining company û Rio Tinto Iron Ore and the Traditional Owners of the Pilbara. It examines two projects that have been developed to engage Indigenous people in the development of their region and through regional representation and business development to build a sustainable future for themselves and their future generations and at the same time ensure social cohesion to support social licence to operate. The case study also examines the process that was followed by Rio Tinto Iron Ore and its operations in undertaking a regional agreement for land access, participation and the integration of local Indigenous people into their business and the local economy.

Most of the Ta-Nb ores in China occur in altered granites, and Ta-Nb minerals occur in these granites as accessory minerals. This type of Ta-Nb ores are characterised by whole mineralised granite mass, large reserves, low grade of tantalum and niobium, less economic minerals, complex mineralogy, difficulty in separation and concentration of Ta-Nb minerals and high operating cost of ore dressing. The Ta-Nb ore presented in this paper is a low-grade Ta-Nb ore occurring in altered granite in Jiangxi province. It has large reserves, with the grade of Ta2O5 0.013 per cent and Nb2O5 0.023 per cent. The process mineralogy study carried out by the authors determined ore mineralogy and ascertained occurrence of Nb and Ta and their mineral processing characteristics. The results are used as the guide for developing the optimum mineral processing flow sheet. The results also indicated that this type of Ta-Nb ore contains a high content of Li, K and Na, a low content of deleterious impurity Fe, and the tailings can be used as feed for glass and ceramic materials. This study provided important mineralogy information for exploiting and utilising low-grade Ta-Nb ore resources, developing a mineral processing flow sheet and further utilising the tailings.

For decades we’ve been focusing on reconciliation as a tool to validate mineral resource estimates. And for decades we’ve been misleading ourselves. The concept of reconciliation is simple. Predict, measure, compare and assess the quality of the prediction. This four-step process reflects the ideas of statistical process control and the plan-do-check-act cycle of Shewhart and Deming fame and our intuitive understanding of using system feedback to improve performance. In an ideal world where data is robust and dense this type of feedback loop can be useful. In the mining industry however, there are some fundamental flaws with the conceptual framework. At almost every stage of the process from pre-estimation through to final production the mining system is plagued by material challenges with data and measurement quality and quantity, system delays, and losses from a supposedly closed system. These issues can and do impact on the benefits sought from reconciliation. Instead of providing feedback leading to improved estimation, reconciliation can result in poor decisions, distracting investigations, and exacerbate the noise in an already noisy system. Before we can rely on reconciliation as a management tool, we need to address the multiple challenges present in our everyday practices. Some of the most critical issues are addressed in this paper.

The operation of a one tonne submerged combustion pilot plant for the recovery of copper from anode furnace and converter slags is described and the effects of variables discussed. Using coal as reductant, copper levels of anode furnace slag were lowered to 1% or less, with batch times of approximately 120 minutes. Fluxing with limestone was required to produce a fluid slag at temperatures of 1200 - 1300¦C. For converter slags, reduction to 0.5% Cu or less was achieved in batch times of 35 minutes. The chemistry of the pyrometallurg- ical recovery of copper is briefly reviewed in relation.to copper recovery methods.

Renison Limited operates an underground tin mine employing both cut and fill and open stope methods, at Renison Bell on the west coast of Tasmania. Mining in the region commenced in the 1890's. Development of the current mining operation commenced in 1965. The ventilation system used at Renison in its present configuration is a function of current mining methods, orebody characteristics and prevailing Tasmanian Department of Mines Inspection Regulations.
