The Charters Towers goldfield is located in the centre of a Lower to Mid-Palaeozoic igneous complex where schistose, amphibolite-grade metamorphic rocks were intruded by multiple phases of medium grained granodioritic rocks. Several generations of mafic and felsic dykes also occur. Two distinct mylonites cut all but the youngest granitoids. Gold mineralisation occurs in quartz veins located in brittley reactivated mylonite and in sympathetic fissures in the undeformed granitoids. The gold-quartz veins occur in complex, gouge-filled, 2.5m thick zones, with minor sulfides, surrounded by zoned phyllic and propylitic alteration assemblages. Four main vein systems are each restricted to separate granitoids or contain oreshoots near granitoid contacts. No genetic relationship between the granitoids and the vein systems can be documented. The early mylonitic fabrics and the granitoid contacts played an important role in ground preparation and in the localization of oreshoots. Non mylonitized granitoids also served as favourable hosts for many of the lodes. Whole rock values of 180 of the granitoids range between 6.5 and 7.9 per mil. Hydrothermal vein quartzes have 180 values between 12.2 and 15.7 per mil. Mylonite quartzes have values of 8.4 per mil. Variation in 180 values of quartzes is in part related to granitoid host rock type.

My forebears migrated to South Australia in the 1830s, 1840s and 1850s. All of them were literate but, because they moved about South Australia looking for work, family papers have become scat- tered and I am left with a few fragments. Some years ago I was intrigued to find among my fath- er's books a frontispiece in an old Anglican Book of Lessons. As can be seen Joseph, a mining smith, was also a Freemason. Thus my interest was aroused. I know some- thing of modern day mining communities in South Australia and wondered what they were like 100 or more years ago.

Changes in the stress field around faults due to the excavation of underground space or the extraction of underground resources induce fault reactivation. To understand the mechanism of fault reactivation, it is important to observe the deformation and sliding processes of the asperities, which is regionally contacted areas at the fault planes. In the laboratory, triaxial compression tests are commonly conducted to reproduce the stress conditions around faults and study their mechanical behaviours. The conventional measurement devices for triaxial compression testing (eg load cells, local deformation transducers, and piezoelectric sensors) uses sensors to measure changes in the physical properties of rocks, but the direct visual information for the sample condition inside the pressure vessel is limited and can only be estimated from the sample after the experiment. We recently developed a direct visual measurement system to observe the slip behaviour of rocks from the inside of the pressure vessel of a triaxial test apparatus. This paper introduces this visual measurement system and presents some preliminary experimental results. The visual measurement system consists of a steel housing with a built-in commercially available digital camera. The triaxial compression tests were conducted to visually observe the sliding behaviour of the pre-cut specimens and to measure its behaviour through the digital image correlation (DIC) method. The captured images and the DIC results show the displacement field of the specimens for different confining pressure. We verified the sliding behaviour and the failure at/around the triangular asperity under at different confining pressure.

Colombia is an example of a nation where mining makes a significant contribution to local and national economies. Due to the abundant resources present in the ground, there are good prospects for further development. However, the impacts of mining projects can include reduced access to good quality freshwater for other economic activities and/or biodiversity preservation (Ossa et al., 2018). As well as the water management challenges common to all mining regions globally, Colombia has particular challenges associated with its biophysical and socio-political traits. Land use change in many regions is dynamic including rapid development of agriculture and the development and abandonment of small scale mines. The value of ecosystem services provided by prospective mining regions also creates challenges in particular with regard to the páramos, the headwater wetlands from which about 70% of Colombia’s water supply has originated (Cleef 1981). Colombia also has particular challenges related to strong preconceptions about mining and its impacts on water. On the one hand, there is recognition that new large-scale mines are important for Colombia’s economy; on the other, there is deep distrust of the sector’s ability to operate with minimal adverse impacts (Gutiérrez-Gómez, 2017). Hence, any impact assessment is likely to face high levels of scepticism and scrutiny. Summarising the work of McIntyre et al. (2018), this abstract proposes a framework for assessing and communicating risks to regional water resources arising from the impacts of mines. The framework outputs aim to provide government and other stakeholder groups the scientific evidence needed to inform their viewpoints about mining development in the selected region, and a baseline from which to design a program of priority scientific research. This paper describes a technique to predict achievable head grades and likely variances from target grade for the Shovelanna Iron Ore Project, in the Pilbara region of Western Australia. The block model from which the production schedule is produced was created from a wide spaced drilling program and was classified as an Inferred Resource under the JORC Code. Ideally, production schedules and target grades would be determined using a combination of Proved and Probable reserves. However sometimes it is necessary to consider the requirements of potential off-take parties who have specific grade tolerances. A technique is needed to simulate mining sequences and grade variations early in the planning process, using an æexplorationÆ block model rather than the normal æminingÆ block model. Marketing contracts require examination whether the target grade {Fe, P, SiO2, Al2O3 can be kept constant, or must be revised during the life of the mine. A model (written in ExcelÖ using Visual Basic macros) develops a feasible, close to optimal, mine plan from block model data. Cut-off grades for minable ore are chosen. The model evaluates ore tonnage, grade and stripping ratio against depth. Outputs at this stage include plots of slices through the orebody, at nominated x, y and z coordinates, showing ore grade, waste, drill hole locations and topography. The model then searches for a feasible satisfactory mine plan. The initial grade target is the average for the identified ore blocks. The available block list (ABL) at any time is the set of ore blocks, any one of which can be mined without removing any other ore block. The entire initial ABL has an unacceptably large ætotal grade stressÆ, defined as [(Grade-Target)/Tolerance]2, summed over the four relevant minerals {Fe, P, SiO2, Al2O3}. The model trims the ABL, removing the block most harming the total stress. Trimming is repeated until the total grade stress reduces to an acceptable level. The trimmed ABL defines the first mine campaign. Removing the trimmed block set, a second ABL is exposed, which is again trimmed and mined. The process is automatic: a few seconds computation provides a complete mine plan. Re-running the model with adjusted grade limits quickly shows whether a uniform target can be achieved or whether the target must be modified during the mine life.

The routine use of gravity gradiometry for the detection of orebodies with no outcrop is now being undertaken. The commodities and orebody styles range from banded iron ore formations to volcanogenic massive sulfide (VMS) style polymetallic deposits. This recent innovation of flying gravity gradiometry was pioneered by BHP Billiton and Lockheed Martin with the Falcon technology (Lee, 2001), and now two additional systems, also using Lockheed Martin instruments, are deployed. In South Africa, magnetic gradiometry is being developed and deployed with the same objectives in mind. In this case, a system from Institute of Photonic Technology (IPHT) is being used. The detectable wavelengths from such systems have decreased to less than 200 m in the last year, and it is expected in 2011 that wavelengths to less than 100 m, with anomaly signal strengths of less than 2 Eotvos for gravity gradiometry will be viable. The key to these advances lies in the improvements of processing software and geological modelling. In particular, methods using all the tensor components are starting to be routinely deployed to filter, level and grid the observed signal. These methods do, however, require full insight and understanding of the reference coordinate systems used by the various instrument designers and survey operators. The digital terrain models need also to be observed to an accuracy of better than 20 m cell sizes, using such techniques as Lidar. Then the terrain effects can be modelled. The topographic surface represents the largest and most proximal density contrast encountered in an airborne survey. Hence terrain effects can have significant impact on airborne gravity gradiometry data. A decorrelation of the terrain effect with the observed signal requires a method of best fitting with a regional surface density. A novel technique has been developed for this purpose. This technique uses a tensor algebra to estimate a density between 1 - 4 g/cc that explains the average observed signal. Armed with this result, the anomalous buried bodies can be revealed by subtraction.

THE South Mine. owned by the Broken Hill South Limited, occupies mineral leases 7 and 8 on the Broken Hill lode. The ore reserves are 4,250,000 tons, and the ore hauled for the year ended June, 1930, was 387,000 tons, the total to date being 7,840,000.The mine, down to the 1070-ft. level, is naturally divided into two sections, the northern and southern ends. Ore extraction is practically completed in the northern end to this horizon, while the southern end is developed ready for a concentrated attack.Fig. 1 shows the state of the 8215-ft. level, after connection to the new shaft.The levels above and below to the 1070-ft. level are in a similar condition, while below the 1070-ft. level the stoping has been confined to the north end, but not completed. The south end on these levels is also partially developed.The ore at present is hauled up No. 1 shaft, which is centrally situated to the present workings. This shaft was put into use in 1909, and in 20 years has had approximately 5,000,000 tons of ore pulled through it.The company, having proved the existence of large ore-bodies in the southern end of the mine, decided to sink No. 7 shaft. This is a six-compartment frame-set shaft (see Fig. 2) equipped with two cages and two 5-ton skips, the remaining compartments being utilised for electric cables, pipes, and ladders. The surface arrangements will include a steel head frame, electric winders, and breaker station.

The importance of surface nucleation or precipitation of metal hydroxide coatings is'established and identified-by characteristic charge reversal patterns. The significance of surface coatings in sulphide and non-sulphide flotation is discussed.

A flow sheet has been developed to treat a high tonnage highly preg-robbing gold ore. The ore is low grade and fine grained with a high proportion of very fi ne free gold. The key components of the flow sheet include gravity, flotation, intensive cyanidation with direct electrowinning, and carbon-in-leach of the flotation concentrate. The circuit produces a low overall mass pull to concentrate allowing economic intensive treatment of large tonnage low-grade material. Efficient recovery of fine gravity gold using a Falcon concentrator in both the milling and flotation circuits, and subsequent intensive cyanidation in a Gekko InLine Leach Reactor (ILR) is critical to the process with over 70 per cent gold recovery expected in this circuit. Grind size control was also found to be important in controlling the activity of the preg-robbers in the carbon in leach circuit and also in the solid liquid separation performance. Tests at the large-scale demonstration plant have been conducted to demonstrate the effectiveness of this flow sheet. A large low-grade deposit is currently under development with the aim of developing a 10 Mt/a treatment plant with the subsequent addition of equivalent sized process lines in multiples of 10 Mt/a. The economic development of this orebody is critically dependant on understanding and exploiting the properties of the ore. In particular it is critical to minimise the effect of preg-robbers by recovering free gold with Falcon concentrators and InLine Leach Reactors. Recovery of the remaining gold by flotation into a small mass yield allows this fraction of gold to be treated by CIL leaching utilising high carbon levels. It is critical is to ensure operation at the optimal grind size to maximise liberation of the free gold and minimise pregrobber activity. The ore has been identified as preg-robbing with low recoveries obtained if treated using conventional cyanidation and carbon absorption. The mineralogy consists of predominantly fi ne grained free gold with minor sulfides including pyrite and arsenopyrite. With conventional cyanide leaching in the absence of carbon, gold recovery is less than 50 per cent. Direct cyanide leaching of the ore in the presence of activated carbon results in an improved but still uneconomic gold recovery. The gravity recoverable gold (GRG - as defined by Andre La Plante) content of the ore has been measured to be 70 per cent to 85 per cent in various tests with liberation grind size of approximately 106 ¦m. This indicates gold is predominantly free and suitable for recovery by batch centrifugal concentrators into a low mass yield. This property of the ore presents the opportunity to maximise the recovery of gold by separating it from the majority of the preg-robbers prior to leaching. Due to the very fine gold particle sizes and the necessity to maximise recovery of this fine fraction Falcon concentrators were selected for the duty, with their proven high recoveries at very fine gold sizes. The gravity recovery in the milling circuit is designed to be in the range 55 to 65 per cent. This has been achieved in the existing pilot plant using a Falcon operating on ball mill discharge within the mill recirculating load. Intensive leaching in an InLine Leach Reactor is essential to recover the gold from the gravity concentrates. Tabling is not a preferred option since recovery is lower than intensive cyanidation and any gold losses to table tails will report to CIL where recovery is reduced by the presence of preg-robbers. Furthermore, tabling recovery from the gravity concentrates is particularly poor due to the fine particle size of the free gold. ILR recoveries of 98 per cent were demonstrated in the pilot plant using an ILR100BA and leach conditions were investigated in the lab using pilot plant generated Falcon concentrate. Recovery of gold from the pregnant solution was achieved with direct electrowinning at pilot and efficiency and sizing parameters were determined at lab scale. To further increase free gold recovery Falcon concentrators will be installed in the flotation circuit. Location of the Falcons in the circuit is not finalised but installation on the rougher concentrate stream is favoured since it will allow multiple pass recovery. This is expected to recovery a further ten to 20 per cent of the gold, as indicated by lab tests on pilot plant generated material. The gravity concentrate from the flotation circuit will also be leached using InLine Leach Reactors. Initial intensive cyanidation tests carried out on lab generated flotation concentrates indicated higher recoveries than CIL can be obtained even though the concentrates contain significant levels of preg-robbing material. This can be explained by the high cyanide, high pH leaching conditions used in the ILR which alters the absorption equilibrium of the preg-robbers. Further optimisation of the leach conditions will be undertaken once more concentrate becomes available. Recovery of the remaining gold content is achieved by flotation into a small mass yield, however the preg-robbers are also recovered into this concentrate. Due to the presence of the preg-robbers gold leaching must be carried out in the presence of high levels of activated carbon in a CIL system. The recovery has been shown to be strongly dependant on the carbon loading and the concentrate particle size. The carbon competes against the preg-robbers for dissolved gold while excessive grinding increases the surface area and activity of the preg-robbers. This has been demonstrated in test work however the economic optimum leaching conditions and carbon loading have yet to be determined. The grind size is critical to the economics of the project, not only due to its effect on gold recovery but also due to its effect on the major operating and capital costs at both the front and back end of the process. It is critical to grind enough to obtain both gravity free gold and flotation liberation at low mass yields however over-grinding results in large increases in mill size and power at the front end and filtration or thickening costs at the tails. Because these unit operations treat essentially all the plant feed even small changes can result in major impacts on project economics. The viability of this project is greatly enhanced by the high recovery of gold into a small mass yield. In particular the production and intensive leaching of the free gold gravity concentrates will allow over 70 per cent of the gold to be recovered efficiently with minimal impact from preg-robbers. By using flotation the mass of the remaining fine preg-robber contaminated material, to be leached in CIL, is greatly reduced allowing this difficult material to be economically treated. The Writer's knowledge of this region began in 1912, while he was with the Geological Survey of South Australia, and, investigated the principles governing the occurrence of fresh and saline ground waters in the area then being opened for closer settlement by the railways under construction from Port Lincoln.These field investigatons for water were extensive rather than intensive, but other examinations covered certain mineral aspects. The Writer also has' had the benefit in the preparation of this paper, of later work done by others, as well as of the monumental earlier work in South Australia by the late H. Y. L. Brown.AREAThe area dealt with, approximately 21,000 square miles, lies to the south of the latitude of Port Augusta.TOPOGRAPHYAs a whole the region is one of low relief, but the Olinthus Range, west of Cowell and north of Cleve, reaches an elevation of 2,000ft., while there is als0 a high area west of Port Lincoln and Tumby Bay. At the north end of the region the Gawler Ranges are formed by the dissection of a thick sheet of felspar porphyry extending over two degrees of longitude, by a width of 20 to 70 miles, with fairly uniform maximum elevations of the undissected portions of the order of 1,000 ft. above sea level. South of the Gawler Ranges are many isolated ridges up to 1,000ft. in height, generally sedimentary and trend...

The relative infrequency of fatalities and other serious events can give them an appearance of being random, of being beyond any reasonable degree of anticipation and prevention. In fact, the vast majority of these events result from exposures that are identifiable, measurable, and manageable. The lessons of prominent incidents, such as the Space Shuttle Columbia, OxyÆs Piper Alpha, Esso Longford, BP Texas City, Massey Mine, as well as lessons from single fatality events, is that alongside the proximate causes of each incident, there also coexisted an underlying fabric of systems, mechanisms, and culture that allowed risk in the workplace to persist and often to become normalised. All of these ingredients of the organisationÆs safety fabric lend themselves to the influence and intervention of senior leaders. The difficulty is that traditional injury prevention paradigms are not sufficient for addressing the precursors that lead up to catastrophic and fatal events. A recent study of such events, led by Dr Thomas Krause concluded that the descriptive aspect of HeinrichÆs safety triangle is useful, but that the predictive aspect is not. The study surfaced reasons why a reduction in less serious injuries does not necessarily correspond to a proportionate reduction in catastrophic and fatal risks. This presentation expands on the findings to include the concept of exposure to the event potential linked to precursor events and the framework for leading an organisation to be both cognisant and effective in eliminating such events.CITATION:Russell, R, 2012. FerrAus Limited's Robertson Range and Davidson Creek iron ore projects are located on the far eastern margin of the Hamersley Province, approximately 100 km to the east of Newman, Western Australia. The deposits are primarily formed of bedded haematite-goethite-limonite mineralisation within the Marra Mamba Formation, comprising a total combined resource of 164 Mt at 58.6 per cent Fe. The deposits represent relatively new discoveries for the Hamersley Province. The potential for mineralisation at Robertson Range was identified by Rio Tinto Exploration in 2000, while Davidson Creek remained untested until 2007. One of the main reasons for this is that these deposits are almost exclusively concealed beneath Tertiary sediments and recent transported cover making them difficult targets for conventional, prospecting style exploration. Since commencing exploration in the project area, FerrAus has collected nearly 20 000 stations of gravity data within the Robertson Range and Davidson Creek project areas, with most of this data collected at a 50 100 m station spacing. Gravity has proven itself to be an effective technique at predicting the position of the target host stratigraphy and has been a key driver in the exploration for concealed iron ore deposits. However, there is not always a perfect correlation between the position of gravity anomalies and concealed ore. The response of deep haematite bodies may be masked by low-density cover rocks, while other dense lithologies may be the cause of gravity anomalies which appear similar to the Marra Mamba targets. Hence, effective use of the gravity data requires interpretation in a geologic context with an understanding of the capabilities and limitations of the technique.

The 1980's has seen a revolution in gold mine developments in Australasia. We are witnessing a near ten fold increase in all phases of gold mine development ranging from exploration through to production. Ounces produced have yet to mirror this activity but have increased from a low point of 600,000 in 1980 to 1,800,000 ounces in 1985 in Australia alone. In 1980 the region had less than 10 gold mines, yet 14 new mines started production in 1985 and as many as 28 might start up in the next 18 months. Developing gold mines in the 1980's in Australasia has not been the easiest of jobs, yet the great number of new developments suggest that we have entered a new era that will rank in history along with the 1850's, 1890's and 1930's as high points.Within- our Australasian region two very distinctive styles of gold deposits are being discovered and developed. On the Australian mainland the new mines are in geologically old rocks and are mostly the low grade haloes surrounding worked out high grade deposits. Most are limited life open pit operations depending on recent innovative carbon-in-pulp or heap leach technology. In the Pacific Islands region the style of discoveries are geologically recent, large bulk-low-grade deposits often geologically analogous to porphyry copper deposits. These deposits are typically 10 to 20 times larger than those being proved up on the Australian mainland.

The latter plant is unique in being the first installation for the successful use of these gases.

Most exploratory drilling in the N.S.W. coal fields has been conducted using convent- ional diamond drill rigs of modern design, us- ually truck or trailer mounted. Conventional diamond drill rigs have also been used exten- sively by the Queensland Department of Mines for coal exploration. However almost all of the exploratory drilling of surface mine coal prospects throughout Queensland has been conducted using rotary rigs typified by the Mayhew 1000 truck mounted unit. The rotary rig has proved capable of both rapid non-core drilling and core drilling with high core recoveries when modern core barrels have been used by experienced drillers. For deep or continuous core drilling, wire-line equipment is now in general use. Both wire-line and conventional coring is effected using stationary split inner tube barrels, for minimum core disturbance, maximum core recovery, ease and accuracy of logging and sub-sectional sampling. Diamond core bits are generally required in N.S.W., with water circu- lation. In Queensland, the generally softer coal measures strata can be successfully cored using tungsten carbide bits and air circulation is the preferred method where possible.

There are several factors that are increasing the need for new graduates to be ready to design and manage more autonomous operations at mines. Autonomous controls and systems range from the start-up, control, and shutdown of processing plants to the autonomous operation of vehicles. These operations require the workers, engineers, and management to have additional skills for programming, debugging, tasking, and maintaining the equipment. The future survivability of many mining operations will be influenced by a company’s willingness and ability to understand, accept, and utilise this technology for safe and productive operations. This is an educational opportunity and challenge that needs to be addressed throughout the student’s experience, from first year to graduate level. This paper discusses the lessons learned from a decade of multidepartment effort at all student levels and many courses that are able to incorporate data science, controls, and autonomous design into the already topic-rich national curriculum. This approach also exposes other engineering disciplines to the mining industry which is a valuable recruiting tool for talent outside of the mining engineering departments.

In this work, a fused salt electrochemical process was investigated experimentally for production of metals and alloys directly from respective solid oxides by electro-deoxidation. Direct electrochemical reduction of the oxides was carried out in molten CaCl2-based chlorides in an electrolytic cell, incorporating an oxygen-evolving inert anode, over the temperature range of 850 - 950¦C. The technical viability of the process was demonstrated by the electro-deoxidation of pure oxides and oxide mixtures including NiO, Nb2O5, Nb2O5/TiO2 and Nb2O5/SnO2 to produce nickel metal, niobium metal, NbTi alloys and the intermetallic compound, Nb3Sn. Compared to the conventional metallurgical processes for producing these metals and alloys, this new electrochemical process appears to be much less energy intensive, with lower costs and no direct greenhouse gas emissions from the electrolytic reduction process. The present electrolytic reduction process has the potential to be scaled up for the green extraction of a number of non-ferrous base metals and processing of many advanced alloys.

The Middleback Ranges are a series of parallel northsouth ridges on the eastern side of the Eyre Peninsula, South Australia, about 20 miles inland from the Spencer Gulf, as shown in Fig. 1. They extend for some 20 miles across the centre of the County of York. North of them, on the same line of strike, in, the County of Manchester, is a disconnected series of lesser which ends in the Iron Monarch-Iron Knob ridge, the principal iron ore locality. These ridges are referred to in the following pages as an integral part of the Middleback Ranges.The deposits of hematite which outcrop in these ranges (Fig. 1) form the most important group of iron ore bodies in Australia, and are exploited by the Broken Hill Proprietary Company. The largest of them is the Iron Monarch (Fig. 6) .H: The next largest are the Iron Duke, the Iron Prince and Iron Baron. The Iron Knob, Iron Duchess, the North and South Iron Knights, Iron Queen, and the small body south of it, the Kimba Lease, and the deposits in the Cook's and Ash Leases, are all smaller.Numerous small lens-like bodies of hematite occur throughout the ridges, but are not of sufficient size to be of commercial use. At present only the Iron Monarch and the Iron Prince bodies are being worked. "An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. A full-length paper was not prepared for this presentation. The Palaeozoic rocks of north-eastern Laos are an attractive target for gold explorers due to the complex tectonic history and lack of past exploration in the region. Alluvial workings along the Nam Xiang River and its tributaries have highlighted the potential for gold mineralisation in the Vieng Kham region. The Nam Xiang River follows a regionally-extensive NNE-striking thrust fault. Adjacent to the Nam Xiang fault, the dip of the main foliation steepens, and in many places the stratigraphy is overturned as a result of this faulting.United Minerals and Mining Company conducted a regional exploration program to explore for gold. This included stream sediment and rock-chip sampling, and airborne geophysics. Geochemical anomalies were followed up with more detailed exploration, including geological mapping and soil sampling. Despite the relatively deep weathering profile, gold mineralisation is associated with a low-level but well-defined gold-in-soil anomaly. Drilling has shown that gold mineralisation occurs on structures and fabrics parallel to the main Nam Xiang fault. The highest gold grades are associated with brecciated sandstones that have experienced strong carbonate alteration. This suggests that late-stage structures such as the Nam Xiang fault are the major control on gold mineralisation in the region.CITATION:Greentree, M, Cunningham, M J M and Liu, J H, 2015.
