The bubble size, together with the gas rate, determines the bubble surface area flux in flotation machines and, therefore, impacts directly on the kinetics of flotation. Understanding the variables that influence bubble size is one of the keys to understanding flotation recovery. Surprisingly, these relationships are poorly understood, largely due to the difficulties associated with gas dispersion measurements in industrial environments. The McGill gas dispersion sensors (bubble size, gas rate, gas holdup) are capable of reliably making such measurements. This paper reports on a study, using the McGill sensors in a 0.8 m3 Metso RCSTM pilot cell, which investigated the effect on bubble size of frother type and concentration, gas rate, temperature and rotor speed. A Denver laboratory cell was used to investigate the effect of elevation above sea level. Frother concentration proved to have the predominant influence on bubble size, and the effect of frother type can be normalised as a function of the critical coalescence concentration (CCC). Measurements made at many plant sites worldwide are compared to the model developed using the Metso RCSTM unit.

Geophysical borehole logging, which measures various in situ petrophysical parameters, can be used not only for qualitative interpretation such as strata correlation, but also for geotechnical assessment through quantitative data analysis. It can play an important role for safe and productive mining operations. Here we provide various applications of geophysical logs such as the estimation of the strength of intact rock or unconfined (or uniaxial) compressive strength (UCS), automated lithological/geotechnical interpretation, geophysical strata rating and orebody delineation and grade estimation. These derived parameters could provide input to control of geological and geotechnical models. This could assist site geologists and planning and production geotechnical engineers to predict and manage mining conditions on an ongoing basis. Both conventional logs such as density, natural gamma and sonic, and less common logging data such as full waveform sonic and televiewer data are examined for different applications. Although the examples used here are mainly for coal mining applications, but they can be equally applied to hard rock metalliferous mining such as iron ore mining.

Geological domains describe the mineralisation state and stratigraphic location of different geological regions of mines. They play a very important role at the geological modelling stage as weight percentage of chemical elements information within each geological domain is assumed to be correlated while information coming from different geological domains is considered uncorrelated. Having correct domain assignments to both the chemical assays and the 3D space of modelling is critical for building a reliable geological model of the mine.As standard practice significant effort is invested into the interpretation of the deposit and identification of the geological domains for the chemical assays and the 3D geological space. Despite these efforts, there are some chemical assays with ambiguous geological domain where the exploration assay domain and the block domain do not match. Incorrectly including a sample in the wrong domain can cause a large change in the predicted weight percentage of chemical elements estimation for that block. Therefore, the major challenge of grouping the spatially correlating weight percentage of chemical elements is how to determine which of these domains best fits these misclassified samples.This work proposes machine learning based autonomous technique for identifying to which geological domain (the exploration assay domain or the block domain) the misclassified sample belongs. The proposed methodology is based on Gaussian Process (GP) classification. The GP machine learning approach consists of training and inference stages. At the training stage the GP automatically learns the properties of different geological domains using the chemical assays with unambiguous domain assignment. Then, at the inference stage the GP makes predictions for the geological domains of the assays with ambiguous initial domain assignment.We tested the proposed technique by conducting a case study for an iron ore deposit located in Western Australia. The results demonstrate that the application of the proposed GP technique removes statistically significant deviations in the assay values in many regions: mineralised ore region, unmineralised region, highly weathered region and intrusive material that is highly variable. In this case study the proposed methodology autonomously identified the geological domains for more than 50 per cent of samples which are initially ambiguously classified. In the past various systems have been used to plan the extraction of ore from block cave operations. These systems have varied from rather sophisticated models with empirical ægravity flowÆ rules applied to the very rudimentary models where only the recorded mined tonnageÆs have been accounted for against the available resource. The normal requirement of these models has been to only plan the movement of ground through the drawpoints. Little cognisance has been taken of the other parameters that affect the total mining operations. The intended purpose of the linear program planning system is to not only include the management, resource availability and geotechnical constraints, but to also include the mining rules. The paper will discuss the various constraints that have been considered, and attempt to illustrate where the system better serves the production system than previous ones. A brief technical discussion on the linear programming system is included.

The underground Sunrise Dam gold mine commenced in October 2003 to extract ore from a series of orebodies with various dips, widths, and ore grades over a strike length of 1.5 km. To successfully operate flat stopes it was identified that a means to extract ore left behind after blasting in stopes with dips ranging from 15 to 40 degrees was needed. Various options were available, which included a bulk water cannon, hand held high-pressure water jet, remote controlled small dozer, several mini excavators and finally a specialised remote controlled excavator from the demolition industry. Trials were commenced for the bulk water cannon option in 2006 that proved that the concept worked, however, the system was too cumbersome to set up for use in cycle with production. Hand washing down using mine (low pressure) water with a two-inch bullhose proved of limited value. The small, one metre high remote controlled dozer as used in South Africa was reviewed, but the steepness of most of the stopes precluded this machine. The hand held high-pressure water jet option is still being investigated; with safety factors still being addressed. Several mini excavators were trialled to clean out the flat stopes with generally poor results, the machines being either too large to fit in the drives and pull ore down or too small with too short reach to effectively and efficiently pull ore out of the stope. In early 2007 a Brokk 330 remote controlled excavator was trialled on site with the low profile of the machine and unique arm configuration proving an effective tool for pulling ore from the footwall of short, flat stopes. A Brokk 330 remote controlled excavator was purchased in late 2007 and is currently in operation.

Geological structure is one of the main controls on ground conditions within mining. It has a significant impact on the mining conditions and productivity of coal mines within the Sydney - Bowen Basin. The three main types of faults common to this region, normal, reverse and strike-slip systems, each present distinct challenges to mining. These systems effect a wide range of geotechnical and mining conditions within the mines. These include coal quality, strata stability, goat and caving behaviour, productivity and maintenance schedules of mining equipment, mine design and mine-site stress fields. A better understanding of the regional, local and mine-scale structural setting, timing relationships of structural events and the mechanisms of fault formation will greatly aid industry's push for greater productivity and competitiveness.

The Kalgoorlie Consolidated Gold Mines (KCGM) Fimiston Open Pit is located on the eastern boundary of the Kalgoorlie-Boulder City and is mining an area traditionally known as the Golden Mile. The pit area has been continuously worked since 1893, predominantly by underground mining methods and more recently through open cut mining. There are over 2000 km of old mine headings and numerous stopes under the open pit area. KCGM has interpreted and digitised the underground mine plans and stope sections into a common database. A 2D-model software package, called Pits, was developed in-house and allows old workings to be displayed at any bench level; this is integrated with 3D Vulcan modelling software, which allows triangulated surfaces to be displayed. Almost every mining activity is affected by underground workings. The effective management of the interaction between current mining and the underground workings is very important for safety and production. A specific ævoidÆ management department has been formed and its broad objective is to minimise the impact of underground workings upon production while maximising safety. Special criteria and procedures have been developed and implemented to keep personnel and machinery from being exposed to unsafe ground. It is of primary importance to accurately define the location and outline of underground workings in advance. Probe drilling has been used as the key tool for that purpose. Various geophysical methods have also been trialled on site to detect underground workings; these are discussed in some detail. This paper discusses ævoidÆ management issues such as data integration, void detection and flagging. The impact of underground workings on mine planing, production and slope stability is also discussed.

The Yabulu refinery of Queensland Nickel Pty Ltd located near Townsville now imports more than three million wet tonnes per year of nickel laterite ore from New Caledonia and Indonesia, making it the largest importer of any commodity in Australia. The project has illustrated that importing untreated bulk ore and re-exporting high value products makes good economic sense for the company and the nation. The economics of this exercise have been considerably enhanced in the past year by changing the project's principal product from nickel oxide sinter to refined high purity nickel metal. It is one of the few operations in the world where nickel ore is transformed to nickel metal at a single site. Several novel technological processes were developed at Yabulu and incorporated into the refinery to allow this product transition to occur. By utilising internally developed technology the new processes were installed at a capital cost of less than $10 million. It is unique for a large nickel producer to completely change the quality of its entire product range many years after the plant was constructed and considerable attention to marketing the new products has been required.

Kalgoorlie Consolidated Gold Mines Pty Ltd is currently developing the 'Super Pit' gold mine in the mining area known as the Golden Mile adjacent to the city of KalgoorlieBoulder, Western Australia. The presence of numerous abandoned mine workings and complex structural geology has required considerable geotechnical input into the determination of the optimum pit slope geometries for both interim and ultimate pit slopes. Slope design is based on detailed site investigation and stability analysis which is balanced with historical operational experience. This paper discusses the process of determining the optimum pit slope angles for each of the stages of the west wall of the 'Super Pit'. The risks associated with slope instability are discussed for each stage.

The PT Freeport Indonesiaæs Deep Ore Zone (DOZ) copper deposit is located in the province of Irian-Jaya, Indonesia. Currently, a block cave mine is being developed around this deposit. Production is scheduled to start the fourth-quarter of year 2000 and to ramp up to 25 000 tpd by year 2003. The air quantity requirement for this mine is equal to 780 m3/s. To supply this quantity, the mine will require five centrifugal fans (one 450 and four 750 kW fans). This study summarises the technical aspects related to the installation and commissioning of two of these fans. The fans were installed on the surface in parallel arrangement with two others. Each has a design capacity of 240 m3/s of air at 2.2 kPa of static pressure. The study presents the installation details from the underground shaft excavation and portal development through fan testing and commissioning. It also presents the results of a monitoring system that was installed to determine the fan duties.

Mining is an activity which has, in the past, been regarded as often leaving land in a condition unfit for further use. As the need for development that is both economic and ecologically sustainable has grown, so the issue of re-use of land after mining has become significant. During operation it is usual that mine environmental conditions which minimise unnecessary or avoidable environmental impact are agreed with the regulatory authorities . These conditions are usually set down in such a way that they can be interpreted reasonably well by both miners and regulators. However, the conditions to be met by a mining company before it can be absolved of responsibility of a site are often less clear. The close-out criteria by which the success of rehabilitation programs will be judged have received little attention in the past. These conditions are now growing in importance as the costs of rehabilitation of a mine site to an agreed post-mining land use assume greater significance in the economics of mining. This paper briefly describes the status of close-out criteria presently being applied across Australia. A comparison is made with similar guidelines from other countries.

The Deep Ore Zone (DOZ) underground mine will be a 25 000 tpd mechanised block cave operation starting production in 2000. The ore handling system consists of a direct truck dumping 54 +74 gyratory crusher, which feeds into an ore bin. An apron feeder below the bin is used to load a conveyor belt. This paper describes the design, sequencing and methodology of the crusher station, ore bin and feeder chamber excavations. The Geotechnical investigation and analysis of the site are also discussed as well as the design, installation and quality control of the long-term ground support methods.

Almost all the countries of the south-west Pacific and the Australian states have recently completed or have commissioned mineral royalty reviews. The prime reasons for this widespread and consistent action is the desire of the governments of these entities to redress perceived effi- ciency and equity imbalances and to ensure that the revenue raising motive does not override the necessity to maintain mineral exploration and development incentives. Governments are tending to adopt royalty systems comprising a com- bination of base royalty and a profit component. Resource rent royalty and royalty holidays have been introduced and anomalies, such as royalty free gold production, still exist but appear to have uncertain futures. Tasmania ranks as the Australian state with the lowest aggregate royalty levy/production value ratio whilst Papua New Guinea has the highest royalty objective achievement level in the south-west Pacific region.

Groundwater geochemistry is controlled by chemical interactions with aquifer rocks, and offers a powerful geochemical exploration technique for locating concealed mineral- isation. Techniques are applied for identifying constituents of aquifers using the compositions of their groundwaters, collected from the surface through drill holes, water bores or springs. Even slowly moving groundwaters have passed through large volumes of rocks which surround any sample site. Products from these rock-water contacts modify the groundwater. By relating water composition to the minerals from which the dissolved species may have been derived, geochemical exploration information is obtained for a significantly larger zone than is represented by drill hole rock samples. In this paper we describe some solution chemical tech- niques we are applying in mineral exploration, particularly in areas of Australia where ground- waters are highly saline and contain enhanced concentrations of trace metals. EQUILIBRIUM MODELS FOR SALINE GROUNDWATERS Central to our technique is the assumption that in low rainfall regions, aquifer rocks and contained groundwaters are in chemical equili- brium. Solubility calculations then allow us to predict upper limits to the soluble products of groundwater interaction with aquifer rocks and to identify minerals with which the groundwater is saturated. Whilst equilibrium calculations require input of concentrations of all dissolved species, they are actually based on "activity" of dissolved species rather than the analysed concentrations. Unless waters have very low ionic strengths (a measure of total dissolved solids), activity of a solute is not equal to its analytical concentration but equals concentration multiplied by an "activity coefficent". Several methods exist for calculating mineral solubilities. The ion-association model, commonly used in programs such as WATEQ (Truesdell and Jones, 1974) and later deriv- atives such as MINTEQ, assume the formation of complex ions such as MgSO4(0), CaCl+, which are described by formation constants. The presence of coal in the Sydney area was confirmed in 1891 when Cremorne Bore No. I intersected cindered coal at 1 854 m. The decision to develop Sydney Harbour Colliery was based on the results of Cremorne Bore No. 2 (drilled in 1892) in which a 3.12 m. seam of unaltered coal was encountered at 889 m. Geologists from the New South Wales Department of Mineral Resources consider that this seam is probably equivalent to an upper split of the Bulli seam. Long Cove at Balmain was selected by Sydney Harbour Collieries Ltd. as the site for mine development in 1896. This was due to opposition to the proposed establishment of a colliery on the north shore of Port Jackson near Cremorne. Construction of the main access and ventilation shafts (termed Birth- day and Jubilee), other mine infrastructure and the quay wall occurred between 1897 and 1902. A fatal accident in which five men were killed occurred during the construction of the Birthday Shaft in 1900. This acci- dent resulted in amendments to the Mining Act providing for guide rails in shafts.

This paper discusses considerations to be made for the selection of rock tunnelling machines, as opposed to drilling and blasting. A systematic approach is presented in terms of utilizing data frcm site investigations to accurately forecast machine performance for estimating and planning purposes and to help minimise associated risks. Useful rock index properties are identified, and correlations for predicting advance rates for roadheader and full face machines are presented together with a simple method of characteristing rock mass conditions for estimating machine utilization and the savings to be gained in support costs. Finally considerations for tunnelling in adverse ground, for advance probing and for large sized tunnels are outlined.

A methodology of environmental performance evaluation in mining developments is proposed, as well as guidelines and procedures for obtaining information to improve their environmental performance. Environmental performance is the results of the mining activities and their relation to environmental issues. If this evaluation is carried out on an on-going basis, it is possible to anticipate or to identify the formation and development of an environmental impact in its early stages. Evidence or trends identified by environmental evaluation provide valuable information to prevent further damage. The proposed methodology is based on the significant environmental aspects of a selected monitored job site by environmental indicators which are then compared with previously defined environmental criteria and targets or goals. The methodology procedures also take into account the environmental accounting of the investments and expenditures.

The heart of mine ventilation science and technology is the protection of the life and health of the miner. Lung diseases that result from overexposure to various mine aerosols can largely be prevented by maintaining concentrations below prescribed limits. Maintaining safe aerosol concentrations depends, in part, on our ability to know what mine aerosol concentrations are in a timely and accurate way. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has been developing several new tools to help miners monitor respirable coal dust, silica and diesel particulate matter. This paper will discuss three main topics. First, the latest results of the person wearable dust monitor (PDM), developed by Rupprecht and Patashnick under CDC contract. The PDM was tested side-by-side with conventional samplers at a number of US coal mines and results indicated that the PDM was comparable to conventional samplers. Second, improvements to the dust dosimeter monitoring technique that includes a new pump with built-in pressure transducer and algorithm to convert differential pressure to dust concentration have shown good precision. Third, advances in the use of the detector tube technique to monitor tailpipe diesel emissions and ambient diesel particulate matter show that strong correlations exist between differential pressure measurement and elemental carbon in the samples.

The Hodgkinson Province numerical modelling project aims to develop an improved understanding of the physical conditions that lead to the localisation of goldbearing fluids within known systems and apply this understanding to the prediction of potential new sites of gold mineralisation. The project follows a series of stages from identifying the key parameters required to construct and test simulations through to reverse engineering of known deposits and ultimately applying the conditions identified in the preliminary stages to predictive simulations. Results of the modelling demonstrate strong geometric controls of the localisation of fluids during mineralisation. An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. In a previous study, various pyrite depressants were examined to improve the flotation performance of a copper-sulfide ore. Optimal results from this study were used to examine the effect of elevation on recovery and grade. Tests were conducted at elevations of 3350, 1735, 610 and -760 metres, consisted of five repetitive experiments for statistical analysis, and were performed both with and without airflow control. Tests were also performed in a glove box at Montana Tech to mimic the pressure conditions. Results indicate that both recovery and grade are dependent on pressure via bubble size and airflow suggesting that pressurised flotation cells should be considered for operations, particularly those at high elevation. Economics are extremely favourable for implementation because ensuing capital expenses are inconsequential with minimal time for return-on-investment.
