Construction and mining sites are often subject to unexpected flooding and extensive delays may occur in locating and installing emergency pumps. This particularly applies to sites located in remote areas. A simple and effective pump, called an air-lift pump, can be built from the equipment available at the working site. The basic req- uirements are a compressed air supply, air hose and conventional water pipes. The air-lift pump is comparatively in- efficient but approximately 35 per cent of the available compressed air power at the site can be applied to pumping. Suprisingly high liquid discharge rates may be obtained in suitable applications. The theoretical and practical consider- ations of the air-lift pump are evaluated and a suggested procedure for the emergency design and construction is outlined. INTRODUCTION. "Underground coal mining is the dominant method of extracting thermal and coking coal in the southern and western coalfields of New South Wales. Monitoring mining-related subsidence forms an important component of environmental impact assessments and subsidence management plans, particularly when there are conflicts between the interests and requirements of mining and environment and community groups. However, there are few specific guidelines for monitoring the impacts of subsidence on terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems, leading to inconsistent policy approaches and highly variable abilities of monitoring programs to accurately detect biological change.This paper highlights the use of a conceptual framework to guide the development of a long-term ecological monitoring program at an underground coalmine in the Western Blue Mountains, New South Wales. Two pilot studies are described: determining the level of observer agreement to assess the condition of a vulnerable tree species (Capertee Stringybark) comparing field sampling methods for detecting a rare heath shrub, Epacris muelleri, using a power analysis to determine sampling intensity requirements.These examples demonstrate that investment in initial pilot studies to test different monitoring approaches can have long-term benefits for stakeholders by more confidently being able to detect potential impacts.CITATION:McCaffrey, N?B,?Glenn, V, Erskine, P?D, Johns,?C?and Fletcher, A?T, 2014. The paper addresses certain mining provisions of the Aboriginal Land Rights (Northern Territory) Act 1976 and the development of Mining agreements negotiated pursuant to Section 43 of the Act. Difficulties for miners and Land Councils alike arising out of the operation of the Land Rights Act will be discussed. Possible scenarios for the resolution of these difficulties will be proposed.

Discovered in 1991 by combined plume detection and bottom-tow photography (Binns and Scott, 1993) and for some years thereafter the highest tenor mineral occurrence known on the ocean floor, the PACMANUS hydrothermal field has since been surveyed and sampled in great detail by CSIRO and international research agencies (Binns et al, 1995; Auzende, Urabe and Scientific Party, 1996; Binns et al, 2002; Tivey et al, 2006). Since 2005 commercial surveys employing deep-tow geophysical packages and remotely-operated vehicles (ROVs) have been conducted by Nautilus Minerals Inc and partners within Papua New Guinea-granted offshore exploration licenses (Nautilus Minerals Inc, 2008). Two academic drilling programs have been conducted, one under the international Ocean Drilling Program (ODP) directed at deep structure (Shipboard Scientific Party, 2002; Binns, Barriga and Miller, 2007), and one using a 5 m capable seafloor diamond drill to investigate the immediate subsurface at one site (Petersen et al, 2005). The primary object of this paper is to describe the present metallurgical practice of the Emperor Combined Mill, wherein ores from the adjoining and Associated Mining Companies, Emperor Gold Mining Company Ltd., Loloma (Fiji) Gold Mines, N.L., and Dolphin Mines, Ltd., are treated for the recovery of gold and silver.The mining field is located in the foothills, five miles from the sea, on the northern side of Viti Levu, the largest and most important island of the Fiji group.The orebodies occur in basalt and associated ash beds overlain by andesite, tuffs and sediments. The basalt is a dark greenish-black rock and in much of the ore mined is weathered with alteration of the olivine to serpentine and iron oxides, of the augite to chlorite and of the minute included crystals of iron ore to other iron oxides. Into the basalt intrudes a considerable number of andesite dykes, and the lodes occur as veins in these dykes, as "flatmakes" along fissures or, ash beds extending horizontally from the dykes and at the contact of the basalt and the andesite dices.The Emperor orebody is the largest and most important, and consists essentially of massive, shattered, well altered and mineralized basalt.Little or no free gold occurs in the ore at present being milled, the most important host minerals for gold being the tellurides sylvanite and hessite, next in importance being the sulphides, pyrite, marcasite and arsenopyrite. Chalcopyrite is present in quantities large enough to be troublesome in the subsequent concentrate treatment section, while sphalerite, tetrahedrite, bornite, galena and native tellurium are present in small quantities.Unimportant occurrences of native copper have been observed in both Dolphin and Emperor orebodies.

The dispersion pattern of heavy metals in soil and water is a consequence of complex geophysical and geochemical processes. Metal release from mining sites and subsequent migration occur primarily through acid mine drainage and erosion of waste and tailings dumps. Water plays a significant role in heavy metal mobilisation. Whilst it acts as a storage buffer for the pollutants, it is also the medium in which most of the reactions take place, and is undoubtedly the most significant transport vector in the pollution process. The intrinsic properties of the acidic drainage such as chemical composition, speciation of key mineral components, redox potential and pH are master variables controlling metal release, transport, deposition, reactivity and availability to biota. The mobility of heavy metals is strongly increased by acidification from acid mine drainage, and the discharge of these metals into the receiving waters results in numerous physical, chemical and biological responses in which the environment can affect the metal and vice versa. The result is an overwhelming number of association/dissociation, substitution, adsorption/desorption reactions, giving rise to a complex migration pattern. The attempt to understand and describe the dispersion pattern of heavy metals is complicated by the nature and level of interaction between the geochemical and hydrodynamic processes that generate and control the movement of the pollutants in the geosphere. Transport models which can be used to predict the behaviour of metal pollutants in a natural environment are still in the initial phases of development and their application to real life situations is limited. The Biochemical Cycle adds another dimension to the mobility of heavy metals. Metals form an important component of the food chain for man and plants. Biological uptake of metals from the bedrock and soil by organisms can result in migration paths very difficult to follow. Biodegradation or assimilation is just a tip of the iceberg.

The identification of Critical Risks, their associated Critical Controls, and the implementation of processes to ensure their ongoing management can be difficult and resource intensive. Answering the following Critical Risk Management related questions can be challenging: • What is a Critical Risk? • What is a Bow-tie Analysis and when should it be used? • What is Critical Control? • How is the effectiveness of a Critical Control assured, and how is this measured? • Who is responsible for managing Critical Controls? • What are the implications if a Critical Control is not effective? It appears that in the mining industry’s efforts to implement the Critical Control Management Process outlined by the International Council on Mining and Metals (ICMM), instead of embedding an integrated, well understood, value adding process, we have instead created a resource hungry monster that is poorly understood by numerous layers of the organisation.

The City of Kalgoorlie/Boulder is situated approximately 600 kilometres to the east of Perth (Fig. 1), and is the major regional centre of the Eastern Goldfields, supporting a population of approximately 25,000. The formation of Kalgoorlie Consolidated Gold Mines in 1989 brought the existing operat- ing entities adjacent to the city under common ownership and management. The Joint Venturers forming the management company are Homestake Gold of Australia and Gold Mines of Kalgoorlie (a Normandy/Poseidon com- pany). This traditional underground mining centre has been worked since 1893, yielding 40.8 million ounces of gold from ore with an average head grade of 10 grams per tonne. Historically the heart of the operation has been the famous Golden Mile located on the Eastern perimeter of the city, in the area known as Fimiston. The other significant operations that form KCGM are the Mt Percy Open Pit and the Mt Charlotte Underground Operation. KCGM's current production is 520,000 ounces per year, with the com- bined Fimiston operations (open cut and underground) contributing 400,000 ounces. The current expansion will increase production levels by a further 150,000 ounces. Traditionally 98 per cent of gold has been sourced from underground areas, however the recent upsurge of open cut operations is rapidly overturning this historical relationship.

Precious metal deposits containing fine-grained disseminated or dispersed gold-silver form by reactions between metal-bearing hydrothermal fluids and sedimentary host rocks. Host rock permeability and chemical composition exert a primary influence on the fluid movement necessary for any primary dispersion halos to form around ore bodies, and determine whether a disseminated style orebody itself will even form. Where the mineralized rocks are relatively unfractured the margins of the orebodies exhibit abrupt decreases in gold content, and strong corresponding decreases in the contents of other metals. Primary dispersion patterns of this type are difficult to recognize and commonly are only a few meters (or less) in width. If the host rocks were well shattered and broken before mineralization, remnant amounts of the hydrothermal fluids may be dissipated in fractures lateral to or above the ore zones. This causes geochemical anomalies to form with clays and silt- size silica within the fractures over distances of up to at least 30-50 meters away from the main orebodies. The tendency for large primary dispersion halos not to form around these deposits explains the disappointing results from so many drilling programs where no multi-gram gold-grade material was even found: if large areas and apparent large volumes of rock contain one gram or less gold that likely is the "orebody" and not a halo effect around high grade mineralization.

Compositional and isotopic analyses of coal seam gases in the Southern Coalfields have shown that these gases frequently contain abnormally high concentrations of magmatically derived carbon dioxide. The size of this carbon dioxide reservoir and the extent of permeation of the sediments by carbon dioxide are not known.Therefore caution in evaluating the natural gas potential of the region is advised.

In recent years substantial advances have been made in the field of geomechanics. Staff at the Western Australian School of Mines (WASM) are keen to see that such advances continue and that the mining industry in Australia can take full advantage of such developments in a timely manner. WASM views mining geomechanics in its broadest sense, as being concerned with the characterisation of the physical properties and the behaviour of earth materials (soil, rock and water) and openings as mining proceeds. Aspects such as, soil and rock improvement techniques for difficult site conditions and the rock breaking processes, are also considered to be an integral part of mining geomechanics. This paper indicates the inter-relationships between the various areas within the field of geomechanics and the strong reliance of all of these areas on site specific engineering geology.

BHP BillitonÆs new rotary iron ore car dumper installation at Finucane Island (Port Hedland) was constructed to increase the total capacity of the port facility from 110 Mtpa to 120 Mtpa and to allow for incremental capacity increases in future. The arrangement of the dumper is similar to other car dumper installations existing on site. To construct the facility, approximately 120 000 m3 of material was excavated in six months, to a total depth of 22 m. The saline water table was nominally 6 m below ground level and the materials excavated varied depending on depth, ranging from sand to mangrove muds. There was a need to retain the sides of the excavation and limit the amount of water from entering the excavated area. This was required to allow excavation to progress and had to be maintained during construction of the permanent concrete and steel facility. The excavation was backfilled progressively as construction progressed. Various retaining wall methods were investigated with the preferred option being sheet piles secured by walers and ground anchors. Detailed electronic models were developed and assessed to complete the final design arrangement. Dewatering bores around the perimeter of the excavation removed the groundwater to intercepted sumps within the site. A strict and methodical program was developed to monitor the integrity of the temporary works and the quality of the groundwater. The works were completed on time despite the following challenges being encountered: availability of resources and equipment, movement of mobile plant on æboggyÆ materials, difficulty driving sheet piles into material at depth, drilling of ground anchors to 32 m, grouting of ground anchors, greater than expected groundwater flows, and the risk of hydrocarbons within the groundwater. The lessons learned from the use of the retention system and, in particular, the associated construction challenges overcome, provide a sound basis for similar work in this buoyant resource market. The conference paper describes the temporary works options investigated, design considerations and processes, construction methodology and challenges encountered, and the monitoring systems developed. Lessons learned are also discussed.

Accurate measurement of rock mass response during the mining of massive underground orebodies is essential, as mines become larger and deeper. These measurements enable: provision of quantitative data for optimal pit slope design and engineering; monitoring of the stability of deep pit slopes, the long-term integrity of shafts and large-scale underground infrastructure, and long-term measurements of deformation or rock mass creep following the mining process for environmental management. Strainmeters traditionally used for deformation measurement have neither the long-term stability nor the high sensitivity to perform measurements in these applications. This paper describes a new precision borehole strain monitoring system (GTS) currently deployed by CSIRO Exploration and Mining, which has the potential to solve these new issues in rock mass deformation monitoring. This technology was originally developed for use in hard rock mines (Gladwin, 1977) and refined considerably for earthquake research (Gladwin et al, 1994; Gwyther et al, 1992). A case study of the use of the GTS in monitoring longwall coal mining over the period 1993 - 1998 is presented.

Minerals and Metals Group (MMG) Century mine (Century) is a large open-cut mine in northwest Queensland approximately 2.5 km long, 1.5 km wide and 240 m deep, with an ultimate pit depth of 320 m. In 2009, the mine experienced three failures which began as small failures, and progressively developed into significant multi-batter failures. The incidents were managed by a combination of analysis, redesign and practical management to achieve positive outcomes for the mine. On the south wall of the mine, a series of batter-scale wedge failures occurred in December 2007. Analysis of structure orientations and design changes aimed to minimise the risk of failure extending over multiple batters, while accepting a risk of further small-scale failures. Design changes were constrained by a culturally sensitive area (CSA) located south of the wall. As mining progressed, shallow wedge failures developed over multiple batters and cracks were observed 60m back from the pit crest, indicating that a large-scale wedge failure was developing. Movement increased in January 2009 as a result of significant rainfall. After considering several design options, the area was stabilised by a cut-back of the wall. Two multi-batter failures also occurred on the north wall as mining progressed through a structurally complex area. Both north wall failures began as small failures that progressively developed, and required a redesign of the wall below as well as practical management of safety aspects. The complex structural geology was difficult to predict ahead of mining, and required geotechnical input into design changes as mining progressed. All three failures potentially had significant impact for ore recovery, and were managed by a combination of analysis, redesign and operational management have resulted to achieve positive outcomes in a challenging mining environment.

In mine site revegetation, exotic grasses are more commonly used than native grasses. This is due to unavailability of native grass seed on a commerical scale and lack of information on agronomical aspects of native grasses. This paper lists a number of native grass species that have the potential to grow well on mine sites, and provides some information on their seed collection, processing and germination. Further, it demonstrates via results of a field trial conducted at Ranger Mine spoil the relative performance of ten native grasses and Rhodes grass. It is concluded that (i) some native grasses have similar ability to grow on mine spoils compared to Rhodes grass and (ii) the use of native grasses have added advantages in ecosystem restoration.

Historical research has played a significant role in the rebirth of the Bendigo Goldfield. The historical research undertaken by the company has been directed to specific areas such as verifying the total gold production of the field, the gold production from defined blocks on each of the major anticlines, the extent of workings of each mine which exceeded 200 m depth, the size and style of reefs mined in each shaft and also within specific domains of the field. Application of this data has assisted in the determination of possible dimensions of different reef styles and the location of mineralisation within each reef system. Description of grade variation, percentage of quartz and the amount and species of accessory sulphide minerals, as well as early geotechnical observations accompanying stoping methodologies, provides valuable analogues for reef structure being defined in the current program. Historical information on shafts on the two anticlines the company is exploring has allowed the postulation and recognition of repetition of reef development within the same stratigraphy in the hinge zones of the adjacent folds. The similarities of mineralisation styles across the field within both specific lithological units and structural setting has had important implications in respect to exploration drill targeting and the estimation of grade and tonnes.

The key element in the carbon-in-pulp process for gold processing is the loading of dissolved Au(CN)2 from solution onto activated carbon. The mechanism and kinetics of this step have been examined by solution adsorption-desorption and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy for both coconut derived activated carbon and peat-based activated carbon. The results show that these carbon types have the same mechanism and kinetics of adsorption. There is no contribution to the bonding from carbon-oxygen functionalities on the carbon surface, as has been invariably supposed in all previous theories for the mechanism of the reaction. It is shown that Au(CN)Z is reversibly adsorbed intact on and parallel to the graphitic planes of the carbon with the formation of a weak carbon-gold n-donor bond. The kinetic measurement of carbon gold loading reactivity is discussed and use of the Murdoch equation for this test is critically assessed.

The use of spectral data has traditionally been for obtaining mineral information and for mapping out alteration systems. The output from these data is typically in the form of mineral assemblages and data on relative proportions of minerals. However there is much more than just mineral information in the spectral data. Most importantly, the data allow the user to obtain vital information on mineral chemistry for some key alteration minerals. The mineral chemistry data allow the users to evaluate multiple phases of alteration of the same key mineral species, and to assess which phase is related to mineralisation. Mineral indices can be extracted from the spectral data and plotted to represent variations in the chemistry and relative proportions of key mineral phases as downhole, section and three-dimensional (3D) plots. These data can also be compared with the spatial distribution of the mineralisation by integration with geochemical and logging data. Through spatial and statistical evaluation the mineral information obtained using spectral analysis can provide vital information to assist in building alteration models and therefore improve targeting for further drilling and exploration.

The production of paste backfill has typically been accomplished through the adaptation of existing technology. Thickeners and disc filters have several drawbacks when applied to production of tailings paste backfill. Personnel at CANMETÆs backfill research laboratory in Sudbury, Ontario, Canada have been carrying out research into and development of methods to produce paste backfill using total mill tailings since 1991. Using a silo for production of paste is not a new concept but has been refined to a marketable level. This technology is based on a fluidization principle that assists in settling the tailings to an homogenous state in a silo. Other developments include patented de-watering technology for use in the silo to speed the settling of the solids to a suitable solids content, optimisation of silo geometry, and instrumentation related to paste backfill production and transportation. The advantages to fluidisation technology are in reduced capital cost, reduced operating costs and in the environmental benefits of using full plant tailings over classified tailings or alluvial aggregates. Another major advantage is in the ability of this technology to be retrofitted to existing hydraulic backfill plants to further reduce capital cost. This paper details the development of the new technology as well as the associated cost savings over other technologies. It will also look at the research and development of unique components that make this technology work.

Obtaining correct assays for gold determinations relies on the correct methods being chosen and the assayer being made aware of the mineralogy of the sample and its general origin. Usually when a geologist or metallurgist obtains "incorrect" gold assays the problem can be traced to poor communication between the geologist or metallurgist and the assayer.
