Drilling underground can be a hazardous undertaking in many circumstances. Raiseboring and boxhole boring underground could form an integral part of the block caving production methodology and getting the right mix of technical capability, ergonomics and economical viability has been the goal of many machine manufacturers. With the introduction of the Terratec Universal Boring Machine concept, flexibility of raiseboring, downreaming and boxholing has been enhanced by the introduction of a single machine that will perform all three processes. In addition to its technical flexibility, additional safety features have been introduced that will eliminate many sources of injury by mechanising most of the operational procedures. Together with the one-man remote operation, this machine design addresses and solves many of the safety issues. This paper outlines the machine concept, details its safety features and shows the techno-economic advantages for use in the block caving environment. Block caving is a distinct caving method applied mostly to large massive orebodies because of the inherent low costs and high production capabilities. Areas of sufficient size are mined by undercutting so that the mass above will cave naturally. Extraction of the caved ore at the bottom of the ore column causes the caving action to continue upward until all of the ore above the undercut level is broken into sizes suitable for handling (Figure 1).

A low-grade disseminated nickel sulphide serpentinite ore from W.A. had a relatively high permeability after drying. Various techniques indicated that the permeability resided within a fine network of fibrous vein- lets and especially within coarse cracks along which the sulphides lay. The ore minerals were therefore open to selective extraction by chemical leaching. A IM ammonia-7.8 wt.o "ammonium carbonate" solution, oxygenated at 1 bar oxygen pressure and about 23¦C, released nickel, copper and cobalt from the sulphides, leaving a permeable residue of goethite, while calcium, magnesium and iron concentrations remained negligible in the leachant. The nickel and copper was electrodeposited directly from the pregnant liquor in a deposit which included 16.5 wt.% sulphur. Enhanced copper/ nickel ratios early in the extraction suggested that valleriite (not amenable to flotation) was leached preferentially. Th$ controlling influence of the pore structure was demonstrated by the dependence of leaching rates on the size of the ore particles used, and on the measured porosity of different ore samples. A 2mm size was probably the optimum for exposing sulphides to the leachant. Leaching was accelerated by increasing the temperature and oxygen pressure.

In the course of an exploration program aimed at increasing Pasminco Mining's ore reserves, an electromagnetic survey down one of the underground drillholes at the North Mine, Broken Hill, recorded a broad and persistent response. This paper demonstrates that the anomaly was not due to any geological feature, but rather was caused by 'self-response' of the sensing probe. The observed results are due to the surveyed hole lying within a resistive environment and having distinct, but not unusual, changes in dip.This phenomenon has not been widely reported and we believe that there are likely to be similar cases in company records where very genuine looking responses are due to self-response rather than sulphides. These false anomalies can be recognised by correlating the observed data with the calculated down-hole component of the transmitting loop's primary field.

The Q-slope method for rock slope engineering was developed to enable engineering geologists and rock engineers to rapidly assess the stability of excavated rock slopes in the field and make optimal adjustments to slope angles as rock mass conditions become apparent during construction of road cuts or benches. An empirical relationship between Q-slope and long-term stable slope angle is now supported through over 500 cases studies from Asia, Australia, the Americas and Europe. This paper presents about the stability analysis by first-ever applying Q-slope method on abandoned quarry wall in Singapore. The 30 m high rock slope which is composed of monzogranite rock was severely damaged by blasting operation. As the rock slope is intended for public view the objective was to retain the natural outlook and without any artificial support application thus manual scaling was carried out to clear the loosed rock blocks. In the end stable slope angle of clean rock face is determined once again by Q-slope method.

We offer these notes as a practical contribution. All the arguments we advance have been tested by practical experience.In its preparation we realised that our subject was one of such importance and covered so wide a field that, dealt with by one of us alone, it might easily have been too much for him, so we have endeavoured, by mutual criticism and advice and a pooling of ideas, to bring forward a few points that may be of advantage to members. If any of the paper is of benefit to mining on the "Golden Mile," or elsewhere, we shall feel amply repaid for our efforts.It is obvious to all that the longer the machine is working productively per shift the greater the return, to all concerned; the machine-man himself and the company. Furthermore, if a man commences a shift with a definite objective in view; for instance, to bore and fire a specific cut, which he recognizes will give him a good financial return, then that man will exercise all his capabilities to attain that objective.In this paper we hope to demonstrate the value to the machine-man of the knowledge of the capabilities of each hole he bores, so that he will be enabled to utilize his drilling time to the greatest advantage. Also, we hope to show that such drilling time can be advantageously extended.After the war, with the influx of new men to the industry, some education on the finer points of machine work may be desirable, and any instruction in this branch must stress the realization of the value of each hole.We realise that most of those present have a sound workable knowledge of machine-mining, and we are not trying to teach anyone the fundamentals of machine work, but we would like to bring to their attentIon some of the finer points which we believe are very important.The machine-man has control of gear of a capital value of over £150, and the use or misuse of that material has a direct bearing on working costs. Therefore it is imperative that the capital outlay is gainfully employed.A "bogger" in charge of a 5/- shovel engaged unproductively is bad enough. How much worse for £150 worth of gear to be not fully productive.Figs. 1 and 2 demonstrate angles of break, and the full realization of the importance of this angle is essential to our paper. Although these Sketches are two-dimensional, we hope they will be sufficient to demonstrate our meaning. We will pass over them as briefly as possible.Fig. 1 shows three holes asked to perform an identical task.(a) 7-ft. hole bored 2 ft. into solid ground-will not come out.(b) 4-ft. hole bored 1 ft. from solid ground-will come out easily.(c) 5-ft. hole bored to solid ground-the best that can be expected under general conditions encountered.The angle of break is a right-angle, normal to direction of hole.

Safety management, both personal and that associated with catastrophic hazard, helps to define the success of mining companies. Personal safety management, often categorised by slips, trips and falls, has been widely addressed, with numerous approaches successfully adopted. Catastrophic hazard can lead to a single accident (eg ground collapse, underground fires etc) causing multiple fatalities. Catastrophic hazard management in mining is an emerging discipline, and as such there are various pitfalls to demonstrate its effectiveness and success; it is much more than simply meeting regulatory requirements. Various standards, guidelines, and leading practices are available for reporting key performance indicators. While measuring and reporting safety related key performance indicators (KPIs) such as Total Recordable Injury Frequency Rate (TRIFR), Lost Time Injury Frequency Rate (LTIFR), are important, they often lack detail, and give little insight into the effectiveness of catastrophic hazard management strategies and controls. Catastrophic hazards are low likelihood, high consequence events, and as such demand a different management approach. Companies cannot use the suite of personal safety metrics to help demonstrate management of catastrophic hazards. In-field verifications have revealed that senior management commitment to safety is often clear, well organised, and resourced. However, there are often some inconsistencies between what management promotes and plan, to what the operational teams understand and implement. Communication and clear understanding of expectations were the common themes identified to help empower supervisors to reinforce requirements of catastrophic hazard management. A lack of specific, measurable, and time-sensitive goals and objectives for the short- or medium-term, making it challenging to track progress was another key observation. Development of an integrated, multi-disciplinary auditing process executed by an experienced team of technical subject matter experts, provided an in-depth understanding of the requirements of catastrophic hazard management. Areas such as underground fire prevention, explosive storage, electrical safety, mobile vehicle interactions, ground control, inrush, and shafts and winders management have substantial overlap and intertwined processes, and similar strategies for emergency responses. Auditing of catastrophic hazards and safety management systems compliance is only the first step in safety assurance. Completing operational performance audits in technical areas and benchmarking the site verification of safety management documents and verifications forms a critical part to clearly demonstrate industry leading safety practices. No longer is it the external inspection or regular hazard management plan review requirements that dominate, but rather the culture of continual hazard identification, management, controls verification, underpinned by improvement and follow-up verifications of the corrective actions.

An experimental investigation of the hydraulic cuttability of coal from the Theiss Dampier Mitsui mine near Moura, Central Queen land illustrated the ability of established cutting equations to describe the behaviour of the coal during cutting. The experimental equipment developed for the work proved reliable. The results of the experimental programme are consistent with accumulated experience from overseas.

In non-ferrous metal mining operations, it is generally necessary to crush and grind the ore to a very fine particle size to effectively liberate the contained mineral from the host rock. Fragmentation by blasting is the first stage of this comminution process.Numerous studies and independent modelling of the Mine to Mill process have demonstrated the potential for significant downstream productivity improvements from improved blast fragmentation. However, safety and environmental constraints associated with the blasting process usually limit the extent to which blast energy or powder factor can be increased.An effective blasting solution has been identified that enables the safe utilisation of powder factors several times higher than those used conventionally to provide significant improvements in fragmentation. The solution uses a static ‘blanket’ of broken rock overlying the blast to contain this increased blast energy and control rock movement. To produce this broken layer of rock, the subdrill in each blast is significantly increased to preblast (or precondition) the entire stemming region of subsequent blasts on the next mining bench.The solution has been evaluated at a large open cut poly-metallic mine in Mexico. Results from the application of this technique have shown significant improvement in run-of-mine fragmentation, with subsequent downstream productivity improvement indicated.CITATION:Hawke, S J and Dominguez, L A, 2015. Legacy tailings storage facilities exist within operating mine sites across Australia. These tailings storage facilities are often viewed as rehabilitation liabilities but with considered assessment may prove to be a resource. Extraction of such a resource might add value to operations by providing cash flow during the development of new mines; providing supplementary mill feed for existing mines undergoing step changes in operations; and supporting mine closure activities. Hellyer Gold Mines is successfully extracting and reprocessing sub-aqueous material from legacy tailings storage facilities at their Hellyer operation in north-west Tasmania. The Hellyer tailings storage facilities contain poly-metallic material from the Hellyer and Fossey underground deposits dating back to the 1980s as well as material from tailings reprocessing activities by other operators of the Hellyer site. Hellyer Gold Mines is reclaiming sub-aqueous material using cutter-suction dredgers and reprocessing on-site. Hellyer is the only operation of its type in Australia and few such operations exist worldwide. Key learnings around the estimation of a resource for legacy tailings storage facilities have been acquired at Hellyer that can be applied to the assessment of other tailings storage facilities. The application of dredging as a mining method at Hellyer is delivered through collaboration with experts from outside the mining industry under the direction of a mining engineer. Key elements required for the planning and delivery of safe and efficient dredging inside tailings storage facilities have been identified at Hellyer and are presented to provide a road map to the development of other dredging operations.

Double-stack trains in the United States date back to the early 1980s, starting about the time deregulation of the rail industry occurred. Freight rail became increasingly more competitive to trucking and barge or ship, and led to major investments in railroad infrastructure. Since most railroad tunnels in the United States were constructed between 1880 and 1930, they were not built tall enough to accommodate modern double-stack intermodal railcars. Therefore, as double-stack trains became the norm, existing tunnels became bottlenecks, and railroads wanted the tunnels made larger without impacting traffic. This need to increase the clearance while not impacting rail traffic launched a very specialised industry: the design and construction of replacement lining systems in existing tunnels.Several large multitunnel railroad clearance improvement projects have been completed in the country in the last decade, and they have all been done under ‘live track’ conditions. Live track conditions consist of work windows, often anywhere from four to 12 hours, that are provided to the contractor to complete the construction work. By the end of each work window, the tunnel must be secured so that the railroad can run trains.In addition to improving the clearance, these projects provided the railroads with an opportunity to improve the general condition of the tunnels, including structural, seepage, drainage and icing conditions. This paper discusses the design considerations, tunnel assessments and construction methods used for these live track railroad tunnel projects. Two versions of a radiometric-type caliper for measuring borehole diameter are described. One, based on the bow-spring principle, is suitable for percussion (exploration) drill holes. The other, which utilizes hemispherical wall contactors actuated by springs, is suitable for blast holes. Both utilize low-power radioactive sources and employ a scintillation detector to measure the "inverse-square law" response of the device to changes in borehole radius. The performance of the device is examined and examples of its use are illustrated.

In older to improve efficiency of surface pre--grouting in sealing off water in heavily water-bearing strata, such as sandstone,siltstone and limestone, several methods have been used in China, they are ; intermittent pre-grouting, adjusting pre-grouting parameters and stepwise repeated pre-grouting methods. The paper describes effect of deviation on water sealing in pre-grouting. Deviation correction measures, like mechanical, technological and changing hole position methods have been introduced with satisfactory results in practical engineering projects without increasing the volume of engineering project and without causing delay.

Uranium solvent extraction, USX has been applied commercially for recovery and concentration for over 50 years. Uranium in acidic liquor, which is prepared following ore leaching, solid/liquid separation and clarification, can be treated through a sequence of operations; extraction-scrubbing-stripping, to obtain purified liquor. USX has dominated the primary uranium industry as the preferred technological route to converter grade yellowcake. The practices of design and operation of USX facilities has found renewed interest as new mines are developed following decades of industry dormancy. This article seeks to outline principles of design and operation from the practitioner’s perspective. The discussion also reviews historical developments of USX applications and highlights recent innovations. This review is hoped to provide guidance for technical personnel who wish to learn more about good practices that leads to reliable USX performance.

Prior to exploitation, the feasibility of mining and recovering ore can usually be determined to a satisfactory level of uncertainty by the consideration of conceptual scenarios, using a range of reasonable parameter values. Such values are selected on experience, knowledge of other mining operations, and the characteristics of the particular deposit being considered. Having established such feasibility, it is usually considerably more demanding to determine what the optimum set of parameters might be. Yet many decisions taken at the feasibility stage represent commitments extending at least into the medium term.

More than 200 bursts in coal occurred at Leichhardt Colliery prior to December 1978 during mine development in the 6 m thick Gemini seam at depths approximating 400 m. Three large bursts each displaced more than 300 tonnes of coal and stone. Two of these which occurred in continuous miner developments, are described and compared. Geological settings, mining strains including induced cleavage and roof failures associated with bursts are described. A shotfiring technique replaced mechanised mining following a major incident at the colliery. Present mining procedures, the apparent improvement in stability of workings and ongoing geotechnical monitoring programme are discussed.

At Newmont’s Jundee Operation, exploration and resource geologists collaborated to produce an open pit resource model. Using a variety of modelling and estimation techniques but no new data, an uneconomic underground target was converted into a potentially economic open pit evaluation. During an industry downturn, it is more important than ever to efficiently share expertise, ideas and resources to problem solve and produce meaningful project outcomes. The two departments brought together different methods and ideas, and the process showed that certain methods worked better than others in different situations, thus the appropriate method was applied to each part of the evaluation. The results were used to create new procedures and improved lithology modelling and resource model estimations. Adaptability of the geology departments and collaboration such as this are key to ongoing improvements and future mine life at Jundee.CITATION:Dudgeon, K, Paradis, J and Topping, M, 2014.
