To date, the scheduling and access design of an underground mine have only been considered as two separate optimisation problems. First, access to the mine is designed and then the scheduling is completed. One drawback of this approach is that the costs of access construction fail to be reflected in the net present value (NPV) calculation. In this paper, designing the access and scheduling its construction are formulated as a single optimisation problem.The underground mine access construction process can be classified according to the number of faces being developed concurrently. An underground mine with a single decline branching at a junction point into two declines is considered. After construction reaches the junction, the two faces of the decline can be constructed sequentially or concurrently.This paper proposes an efficient algorithm for optimally locating a junction point to maximise the NPV where two faces are being developed concurrently. The NPV is defined by taking the locations of orebodies and their values, decline construction costs, decline development rate and discount rate into account. The variation of the NPV and the optimal locations of the junction point for one and two concurrent development faces for a range of discount rates are discussed and compared. "Northparkes installed and commissioned a secondary crushing circuit in 2010 to debottleneck the semi-autogenous grinding (SAG) mill constrained grinding circuits. Following further improvements to the circuit (inclusion of a double deck vibrating screen), the project successfully delivered finer feed to the SAG mill. The result of this project was an increase in the milled tonnes from 5.6 Mt/a in 2012 to 6.0 Mt/a in 2013.The increased throughput rates introduced new challenges with the circuit becoming power limited. How to best optimise the available comminution power, while delivering the optimal particle size to the flotation circuit was made the key optimisation objective. To achieve this objective, Northparkes initiated a project that included engaging comminution experts. Recommendations included changes to the SAG mill including mill lifter design, increased grinding media charge levels and reduced grinding media size with aim of producing a finer grind size.Northparkes implemented these recommendations along with some other changes to SAG discharge grates and the mill discharge vibrating screen. This achieved a substantial reduction in the flotation feed particle size distribution (approximately 20 microns) by utilising increased average SAG power utilisation, in turn resulting in a two per cent increase in copper recovery.With power utilisation now maximised, the next phase of optimisation has moved to the throughput-grind-recovery relationship and the cost benefit analysis of installing additional grinding power.Citation:Sulianto, Y, Trott, T, Morgan, D, Bell, T, Kock, F and Putland, B, 2016. "Evaluating the geological risk associated with ore deposits is becoming common practice in the mining industry. While geostatistical simulation is a useful tool for evaluating this risk, the effect of applying different types of simulation is less understood. For simulation of categorical variables like rock types, available methods perform simulation in fundamentally different ways. In this study, the geological risk relevant for informed mine planning is studied with two categorical simulation methods, PluriGaussian Simulation (PGS) and Sequential Indicator Simulation (SIS). Risk is expressed as a probability of repeated occurrence of lithological units in the same location across simulations. Significant differences are observed between the methods in terms of spatial distribution of risk. To identify the most plausible risk model, the input parameters at every step of both techniques are scrutinised. PGS and SIS inputs are classified as four parameters that are: fundamental to implementation of the methodfixed to enable comparison of PGS and SISdetermined by user interpretation, hence variablenormally optimised during application of PGS and SIS. The effect of parameter selection from categories 1 and 4 on the risk model is investigated using drill core data from a leucogranite deposit. A corresponding block model is created for assigning outputs from PGS and SIS. Risk models produced by either method are illustrated in a cut-out from the block model to enable bench-by-bench comparison. For PGS, risk associated with relatively rare lithologies is relatively sensitive to variation of parameters. Independent of the abundance of lithology, a location-dependent effect of variogram and vertical proportion curve parameter selection is observed, with risk increasing towards the deposit edge. Although SIS requires fewer inputs, single lithologies must be modelled in turn. Using small numbers of samples in the search neighbourhood, all risk models differ substantially. For larger numbers of samples, the risk models are similar. Overall it appears that the risk model produced using SIS is less sensitive to changes than PGS but further work is required to confirm this.CITATION:Palmer, L W and Glass, H J, 2014. Measuring cyanide in the leach liquors associated with high copper and/or sulfide ores is a non-trivial exercise. It is well known that copper complexes with cyanide and reduces the amount of cyanide available for gold leaching. What is not so well known is that the rhodanine end point overestimates the amount of cyanide available for leaching in the presence of copper. Sulfide ions also interfere with a rhodanine end point titration, although this is less of a problem as the black silver sulfide precipitate formed clearly indicates to the operator that something is wrong. Thiosulfate, which forms readily from the alkaline oxidation of sulfides, causes an overestimation of the cyanide available for leaching due to the formation of Ag(S2O3)-. The net result of these observations is that rhodanine is rarely of value as an end point indicator in complex solutions. It generally overestimates the amount of cyanide available, providing plant metallurgists with a false sense of security. Potentiometric titrations are generally much more capable of accurately measuring cyanide in complex solutions. The interfering effect of copper can be resolved and it is even possible to estimate the copper concentration using the inflexions associated with the titration of CN- + Cu(CN)43- versus Cu(CN)32-. Using the potentiometric method sulfide ions can be determined before the cyanide measurement is made due to the formation of AgS2, although the electrode will foul with repeated measurements. Thiosulfate can also be distinguished from cyanide with a potentiometric titration. Rhodanine and potentiometric titrations are both affected by the pH of the liquor. At pH 9.2 half the cyanide will be present as CN- and half as HCN(aq) with only the CN- being titratable. This does not hold in the presence of a buffer active around pH 9. In the presence of sufficient buffer, both the CN- and HCN(aq) are titrated. Ca(OH)+ may buffer the pH when large amounts of lime have been added.

Hazards in underground mines are concomitant with the mining of mineral deposits and have their source in a minerÆs work environment. The authors of the paper have undertaken a trial classification of these hazards into three groups, depending on the sphere of their occurrence:lithosphere, ie rock mass, atmosphere, ie air in mine workings, and technosphere, ie machines, equipment and facilities in mine workings. The lithosphere creates such hazards as bumps, rock outbursts, the atmosphere is a factor causing fires, methane explosions and climatic hazards, whereas accidents concomitant with an operation of machines and equipment occur in the technosphere. Assuming that the number of accidents in the mining industry, concomitant with hazards, reflects the degree of safety, it has been shown, that in Poland they are under control to a large extent.

Barcelona Metro Line 9 (Line 9) is an essential infrastructure, improving the transversal transport in Barcelona by connecting the greater part of the currently existing radial lines. The purpose of Line 9 is to create a peripheral line surrounding the city of 1.6 million people (metropolitan area exceeds five million), and includes 52 stations, of which a total of 32 are deep shafts and 19 transfer stations in a densely populated area with several geographical constraints.The tunnel has an inner diameter of 10.90 m, bored with an earth pressure balance (EPB) tunnel boring machine (TBM) in soil sections with precast concrete lining type universal ring and segments 40 cm thick.A single tunnel solution was adopted, driven by functionality and costs savings. The internal tunnel section is divided into two levels to allow for one way rail transit including the platforms in each station on each level in order to optimise the space created by the TBM excavation and comply with the operational needs. The division in two areas of the tunnel was carried out through the construction of a horizontal slab resting on the tunnel segments with a constant thickness of 40 cm at the central part of the slab and supporting side walls.CITATION:Justa Cámara, R and Pinillos Lorenzana, L M, 2014. Very large reserves of gas are contained in coal. Because of the low permeability of the coal gas flow rates are very low. Fracturing of the coal can be achieved by use of the nitrogen - foam frac techniques described but the flow rates after fracturing are not sufficient to support economic development. Fracturing of the seams in the Bowen Basin was as predicted but in the Sydney Basin no trace of the fracture could be found when development proceeded past the fractured well. Testing of coal samples has provided some insight into parameters affecting desorption Rates.

Particle sorting allows partially liberated minerals to be separated prior to energy intensive fine grinding. Sensors select particles for separation and air, water or mechanical ejectors are used to physically deflect those selected. To achieve effective separation there has to be sufficient liberation, accurate detection and presentation of a separated monolayer of particles. These three physical constraints determine the particle size limits, the sorting technology utilised, the separation efficiency, and the throughput that can be achieved. The combination of all these factors controls the effective limits on the degree to which sorting can reduce the specific comminution requirements and increasing energy efficiency. A major component of Sydney’s new South West Rail Link project is the Hume Highway Underpass (HHU), an 80 m long twin track mined tunnel excavated at a depth of just 5 m below the pavement of the Hume Highway; one of Australia’s busiest road corridors.In order to ensure a safe and efficient construction of the underpass without disruption to the Hume Highway traffic, design of the HHU required specific focus on the prediction and control of ground movements. This paper describes the design and construction solutions adopted in response to these challenging constraints. In late 1984, Council of the Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy accepted a proposal to establish a Mineral Heritage Committee. This was to be involved in matters relating to mineral heritage-its recording, its preservation, and the acknowledgement that it can be of use to the mineral industry in the future. The Committee was established to ensure that all of the disciplines of our profession were included and that, so far as possible, all of our country as well as those countries of the Southwest Pacific Basin were represented. Some work has been commenced to bring real- isation of the importance of the heritage of our mineral industry to the forefront of the commu- nity's interest. There is not a state in this country and the Southwest Pacific where the mineral industry has not at various times proved to be the basis of community development.

Sampling of grain for mycotoxins is challenging in that some mycotoxins, such as Ochratoxin A (OTA), have very low permitted levels and the kernels carrying the mycotoxin may be highly localised within the bulk of the grain as ‘hot spots’. Sampling for genetically modified organisms (GMOs) can be fraught with similar problems, especially if the contamination is adventitious and random. Incremental sampling under these circumstances can be shown to lead to a high variance in the sampling result.A new design of sampler for grain and other free-flowing particulates has been developed that is effective in practically eliminating the sampling variance due to distributional heterogeneity (DH).This paper introduces the design and argues that the sampler should be free of sampling variance due to DH.CITATION:Lyman, G J, 2017. Mining is the art of disturbing ground. All phases of a mine’s life cycle from exploration to building and operating a mine, through closure, has a physical impact on the earth. There is currently increasing public and stakeholder awareness owing to a wide range of issues including heritage protection, environmental stewardship, and social impacts therefore ground disturbance must be conducted in a way that honours and respects all agreements, regulations, legislation, and social expectations. A comprehensive ground disturbance permitting process has been developed through consultation with major mining companies and Traditional Owner groups. It operates from strategic business planning through to closure and rehabilitation. Adherence to the principles and process of permitting helps to minimise risk by ensuring that mining companies conduct their business in an inclusive, professional, reliable, and consistent manner that stakeholders reasonably expect, and that mining companies can be proud of. Built on a geographical information system, supplemented with a specialist database, this process allows request, review, and approval by subject matter experts, to operate in a common environment that is transparent, facilitates collaboration, improves efficiencies, and reduces the risk of error or omission. The application of new technology can effectively highlight changes that naturally occur in today’s dynamic ESG domain and provides the perfect platform to record actual disturbance against authorised and planned allowances. The social license to operate demands that strong governance of the ground disturbance process, described herein, can be demonstrated to any interested stakeholder, and mining companies recognise that this principle is central to the betterment of the mining industry.

The Porgera gold mine has made significant progress with the successful installation of a JK FrothCam image analysis system. The system is used to measure and control froth velocity on the scavenger circuit which has brought significant economical and operational benefits. The froth velocity signal, determined by analysis of the camera, is transmitted to the PLC that manipulates flotation cell airflow rate and cell level controllers to maintain a target froth velocity of 130 mm per second. Following on from a three-week trial installation in June 2000, a permanent installation was commissioned on the scavenger Outokumpu (OK150) tank cells. Further work is in progress on the rougher Wemco cells. This paper describes the evaluation of FrothCam Technology and its subsequent installation.

A biological column leach testwork program was undertaken on a chalcocite ore. Three tests were conducted in all, using 65 in x 100 mm columns in three sections. The tests were started with varying acid strengths and inoculated with bacterial solutions from previous column testwork. The leaching of Cu was found to occur in three stages. These stages consisted of direct acid leaching, bacterial oxidation and ferric iron leaching. These leaching stages can most easily he described through the examination of not only Cu dissolution but also Fe dissolution and its subsequent oxidation and precipitation. The p11 of the system was found to he critical in establishing and maintaining the bacterial leaching system. The oxidation potential was seen to he influenced by the leaching system as the oxidation states altered. Test variables such as, 02, COz, and temperature were all found to influence the system. Final copper recoveries were in excess of 90 per cent in each column test over a leach time ranging from 211 to 328 days. Given similar leach conditions are applied, the application of this technology to site is expected to give comparable results.

Shaft guide reaetions in No. 2 Ore Shaft, Mount Isa Mines Limited, have been reduced to a low order of magnitude by the use of self aligning slippers and spring loaded guide rollers. Before commissioning the new 4500 h.p. winder at No. 2 Ore Shaft in January, 1958, it was realised that the increase in hoisting speed from 1800 to 2650 ft/min. would cause high shaft guide reactions which would be increased further when the elongated 12 ton skips replaced the existing 7 ton skips.The Cambridge accelerometer was used to measure the shaft guide reactions and to confirm that progressive skip modifications were resulting in reduced reactions. The skip modifications were completed in 4 weeks.INTRODUCTIONIn 1956 an expansion programme was initiated to increase production from 5000 to 11000 tons per mining day. At No. 2 Ore Shaft the 1500 h.p. winder operated at 1800 ft./min. and hoisted a 7 ton capacity skip. The new 4500 h.p. winder operates at 2650 ft./min. and hoists a 12 ton capacity skip. No. 2 Ore shaft is equipped with two 5 ft. by 5 ft. hoisting compartments (Fig. 1) and any increase in skip capacity meant an abnormally long skip. This feature, coupled with the increase in hoisting speed, could have caused very high shaft guide reactions. Before commissioning the 4500 h.p. winder, a Cambridge accelerometer was borrowed from the University of Adelaide and was used to measure the shaft guide reactions. Rather than carry out an extensive shaft timbering programme, the skips were modified by fitting cushioned guide shoes and spring loaded guide rollers (Fig. 1). Testing commenced in February, 1958, and was completed in March, 1958.

In this paper multivariate data analysis performed on a new multi-camera system implemented to zinc flotation circuit of PyhSsalmi mine is presented. Image-analysis-based system was developed to take advantage of the commonly known fact that the changes in the flotation process are reflected to the visual appearance of the froth surface. Most often the changes are seen first in the froth and later in other process measurements. The image variables are already utilised in closed loop control and considerable savings are achieved with the current setting, but the results coming from the separate cells are used individually. This is clearly not the optimal way to take advantage of the many measurements coming from different locations of the process. A better approach would be for example to use the measurements coming from the early stages of the process to predict the behaviour (or improve the quality of measurements) in the later stages. The methods described in this paper are aimed to improving the situation in this sense.

The employment of a tunnel boring machine (TBM) is the default delivery method for the realisation of traffic, utility and primary resource underground space worldwide, with hundreds of kilometres completed safely each year. This is not yet the case for the mining sector in Australia, specifically underground coal mining. The safety advantages of TBM delivery when compared to New Austrian Tunnelling Method (NATM) delivery, or that of drill and blast, remains unrealised.With coal access drifts ranging between 1000?m and 3000?m in length, the construction of these facilities using TBMs could be done in a fraction of the time when compared to current practice. TBM world records currently stand at 435?m/week or 1600?m/month for the 7.0?m to 10.0?m range. Resource owners and developers should embrace the opportunity to deliver access to their orebodies in only a few months, excluding machine assembly and disassembly time.There are challenges in utilising TBMs for construction of Coal access drifts, such as; TBMs generally being bespoke design, maximising capital efficiency for drift development, and geotechnical variances between projects. This paper explores safer and more cost-effective options. This paper also provides detail of how the configuration within a completed drift could be optimised to ensure all site specific needs are met with regard to future use of the drift. The paper also includes descriptions of the engineering solutions that are available for physical and atmospheric challenges specific to coal drift applications and how the TBM manufactures are adapting to the regulatory requirements are also covered.Due to downward pressure on high cost bases and ever increasing safety requirements the popularity of TBMs in the Australian mining sector can be expected to increase and eventually become the default delivery method for coal drift construction, building them cheaper, faster and?safer.CITATION:Sibthorpe, D, 2014. The performance of the Australian Mining Industry over the past 10 years using key indicators of production, revenue, aftertax return investment, together with key cost elements, market changes and ore reserves is briefly reviewed. The elements of competitiveness are discussed forthe industry and the effects of Government charges and policies relating to existing operations are outlined. There is a demonstrated need for improvements in competitiveness in direct and indirect costs and for improved access to resources for the mining industry to continue to grow and add to Australia's economic growth.

The Fosterville goldfield, situated 25 km east of Bendigo, Victoria was at its peak between 1894-1910 with some 47 600 ounces produced (Figure 1). Since that time intermittent mining and tailings retreatment was undertaken until Bendigo Gold Associates delineated a viable resource and commenced an open cut heap leaching operation in early 1991. Unfortunately they encountered financial difficulties and Perseverance Exploration purchased the mine in April 1992. Perseverance operated a successful heap leach operation nearby Nagambie, 100 km east of Fosterville. Based on its acquired heap leaching experience, Perseverance Exploration was able to instigate operational changes to create a successful small gold heap leach operation. The major change was the using of the original multi-use leach pad as a single-use leach pad. The available data allows for a comparison of the two operating systems.

Traditionally, most Australian iron ore mining operations have been surface-based. Processing plants were designed to handle dry ores. In recent years mining operations in the Pilbara have progressively moved below the water table exposing wet, sticky ores which have caused lost efficiency in screening operations as particles tend to agglomerate and adhere, blinding screening media. Miners and vibrating screen manufacturers have experimented with a shift from linear motion to elliptical motion screens. Elliptical motion conveys and lifts particles. Effective on flat deck (horizontal and inclined) or sloping decks it can be configured to provide a controlled transport rate, applying pressure in all directions to maximise screening efficiency. In practice, elliptical motion screens have proven to be effective in dislodging sticky particles from screening media, reducing blinding rates and improving screen efficiency. Moisture and clay content change during the life of a mine. These changes are sometimes the effect of seasonal rainfall, in other cases due to increased groundwater and clay content as mining operations go deeper. To compensate for such changes and optimise screen efficiency, changing the ‘shape’ of elliptical screen motion is required. This has traditionally required shutting down processing plants and making mechanical screen adjustments. Plant downtime is costly and machine adjustment has been a ‘trial and error’ practice. This paper will explore the results of a field trial that is currently underway in Brazil of a next generation elliptical motion screen design that allows operators to make changes to exciter rotational direction, speed and screen stroke angle, through electronic drive phase control. The machine’s electronic drive system synchronisation is enhanced for stability with a unique mechanical timing system. Operating at up to 6 g, screen adjustments can be made on the fly without stopping production. Early trial results are showing up to 50 per cent improvement in screen efficiency compared with traditional elliptical motion machines under certain feed conditions.
