The Late Permian intermediate to silicic talc-alkaline Drake Volcanics of New England, N.S.W., consist largely of shallow marine, redeposited volcaniclastic rocks which host epithermal Ag-Au deposits. Pervasive hydro- thermal alteration is widespread. The 200-300 m Cataract River Member includes several sedimen- tation cycles composed of massive pumice brec- cias, overlain by laminated sandstones and siltstones, interbedded with marine, fossil- iferous mudstones. Two distinct groups of cla- sts exist within the volcaniclastic beds: 1. Lithics of predominantly intermediate compos- ition lavas that have undergone subaerial epi- clastic erosion and transportation; 2.Pumice, quartz and plagioclase crystals which have not been reworked by epiclastic processes. The lithic clasts were derived locally in a sub- aerial environment within the Drake Volcanics, and pumice and crystal fragments from contem- poraneous centres of silicic volcanism else- where in New England, N.S.W. The latter group of clasts was transported to Drake by Plinian airfall or rafting, and fell and was washed on- to emergent portions of the Drake Volcanics, where reworked locally derived fragments occ- urred. Cold state subaqueous mass-flows, prod- uced by slumping, resedimented the mixed vol- caniclastic detritus into the marine basin in a series of cyclic units with massive lower parts, and laminated upper zones. Modern ana- logs of the palaeogeographic setting in New England, N.S.W., in the Late Permian are pro- vided by the Taupo Zone, New Zealand, and sou- thern Kyushu, Japan.

The Black Ridge Gold Deposit is located in the northern part of the Clermont Goldfield, which is situated at the boundary of the Bowen Basin and Anakie Inlier, Queensland. The goldfield comprises a series of NNW-trending semi-isolated basins, which are tectonically aligned with the Denison Trough, the west-most division of the Bowen Basin (Fig. 1-1).The main stratigraphic units in the deposits in younging sequence are the Anakie Metamorphics, the early Permian Blair Athol Coal Measures, the late Permian(?) White Section, and the Tertiary basalts which are regionally widespread, and intruded by abundant mafic and felsic plugs.

A sample of fifty fractured low chromium-molybdenum alloy drill steel rods was investigated. Each rod was of the forged collar integral tungsten carbide type in common use in Australia.Examination of a new rod of the same type showed that a zone of spheroidized carbide about 0·25 in. wide was present about 12 in. from the shank end.Examination of the fractured rods revealed that 78 per cent. of failures occurred within 0·25 in. of the spheroidized zone at the shank end but in the main stem of the rod rather than actually in this softened zone where it might be expected to occur.This predominant type of failure at the shank end in the steel rods is caused by a highly anodic region corresponding to the first stages of spheroidization of carbides present in the steel. Accelerated corrosion in the narrow band havil\g this structure induces the formation of stress-concentrating corrosion pits, 78 per cent. of failures in this region being due to corrosion fatigue.The remaining 22 per cent. of failures, occurring in the as-rolled stem, were due to either corrosion fatiglie if failure were initiated at the water-hole surface of the drill rod, or to a decarburized outer surface if failure originated at this surface.Temperatures producing spheroidization were determined as 6007600C.Evidence suggests that approximately 75 per cent, of shank-end failures in all forged collar drill rods can be attributed to corrosion fatigue occurring preferentially in that section showing partial spheroidization of carbides· produced by the forging and hardeningoperations.Methods are suggested for reducing the frequency of fatigue failures in drill rods.INTRODUCTIONAn integral part of all tunnelling operations through rock is the drilling of suitably placed holes i:n.to which explosive is subsequently rammed and exploded.The drilling operation, whether for metalliferous mining or for general civil engineering constructional work; is...

Detrital iron deposits (‘DID’) in the Hamersley Province of Western Australia have been successfully mined and processed as small quantities of saleable standalone or blended lump and fine ore products over many decades. Despite their past, present, and potential future exploitation, they have received far less geological attention than the economically more significant higher grade bedded iron deposits (BID) or channel iron deposits (CID). DID are composed of Pliocene to Quaternary unconsolidated colluvial/alluvial hematite gravels with minor sand, silt, and ferruginous clay, as well as minor iron rich hematite clast conglomerates. DID mineralisation at Solomon has been subdivided into six distinct stratigraphic units, DID-5 (lowermost) to DID-0 (uppermost) based on differences in clast and matrix textures and mineralogy, degree of consolidation/lithification, particle size distribution and replacement textures. The most significant accumulations of DID-1 to DID-5 are in tributary valleys that have been cut through the Joffre Member of the Brockman Iron Formation on either side of the main Kings-Queens valley which contains the CID. DID-5 and DID-4 are ferruginous conglomerate, referred to as canga, with four subtypes recognised. DID-4 is composed of BID hematite clasts cemented by hematite or goethite. DID-5 is characterised by partial to complete replacement of BID hematite clasts and matrix by the yellow ochreous and brown to black vitreous forms of goethite. DID-3 to DID-0 are unconsolidated hematite detritals composed of largely (>80 weight per cent) fine to coarse gravel, minor sand and little silt or clay. The gravel clasts are largely composed of hematite and hydrohematite that replace BID, micro-nanoplaty hematite-martite-ochreous goethite (m-nplH-M-oG) BID, reworked canga, hematite pisoids, siliceous hematite BID (micro-nanoplaty hematite-martite-quartz, m-nplH-M-quartz), chert (~10–20 per cent) and minor (<5 per cent) Banded Iron Formation (BIF). Hematite abundance decreases from DID-3 to DID-0 whilst siliceous hematite BID is highest in abundance in DID-0 and lowest in DID-3. A key finding of the study is that >90 per cent of mineralised detrital clasts are derived from hypogene altered BID micro-nanoplaty hematite-martite with subsequent later supergene ochreous goethite mineralisation hosted by the Joffre Member. The DID genesis model entails interpreted Palaeoproterozoic siliceous hematite hypogene microplaty BID mineralisation of the Joffre Member undergoing Cenozoic supergene leaching of quartz and replacement by ochreous goethite to form low phosphorous BID micro-nanoplaty hematite-martite-ochreous goethite clasts. BID martitenanoplaty hematite-martite-ochreous goethite clasts and detritus eroded from hill slopes were deposited in the valleys as an initial single DID-5-DID-4 unit over a weathered pre-CID basal conglomerate. DID-5 and DID-4 underwent goethite cementation of the matrix followed by replacement by hydrohematite, hematite, and maghemite. DID-3 formed during subsequent periods of erosion of largely DID-4 hematite clasts and pisoids. Groundwater flow-through hematite canga resulted in partial to complete hydration replacement of DID-4 hematite clasts and matrix by ochreous and vitreous goethite to form DID-5. Deposition of DID-2 to DID-0 was via reworking and deposition of DID-5 to DID-4 canga and DID-3 as clasts and pisoids/ooids, as well as siliceous hematite and BIF sourced from the Joffre Member in the hill slopes.

The 4 km long Huguenot Toll Tunnel in the Western Cape region of South Africa celebrated its tenth anniversary on 18 March 1998. At present a single (South) bore with bi-directional traffic flow is operational. The North bore was originally excavated but not lined and equipped.The tunnel is fitted with a semi-transverse ventilation system comprising 45/350 kW two speed fresh-air and 1 MW exhaust air fans at each of the portals. These provide ventilation through fresh and exhaust air ducts above the ceiling separated by movable partition doors. Secondary air ducts deliver air at low level. The fan control depends on the levels of CO pollution or visibility measured at six positions along the tunnel.The system performed well during initial tests and under conditions of low traffic volumes. As traffic volumes increased, and user complaints of bad air in the tunnel were received on several occasions, we realised that we had a problem. Tests confirmed that natural airflow within the tunnel induced by prevailing meteorological conditions outside the portals affected the performance of the ventilation system causing a plug of bad air to be trapped at varying positions along the operating tunnel.The control systems in the tunnel are presently being upgraded as described by Gray, Rieckert and Bullock (1998). As part of the retrofit we are implementing a new control strategy for the ventilation system which takes into account the external weather conditions. This paper discusses the 24 month long meteorological data gathering exercise, which is on-going, and explores the philosophies planned for controlling the ventilation system. The correlation between winds external to the tunnel and induced airflow inside the tunnel are examined. The effects of the weather induced airflow on the existing ventilation system are considered and proposals given for taking these effects into account in the new control strategy. These include the implementation of an expert system to predict ambient airflow from prevailing weather conditions, and the use of airflow measurements taken in the uncompleted North bore as a cross-check.The paper highlights the need to take cognisance of external weather conditions when designing tunnel ventilation systems.

Over the past five years, commodity prices have been high and the focus of many plants has been æthe more metal the better, at whatever costÆ. In the recent economic crisis, the focus has shifted more to reducing the cost of production and operating at higher efficiency. Since 2002, JKTech has partnered with the Century mine in north-west Queensland to transfer technology and understanding through the good, bad and ugly economic environments, using methodology and techniques arising from research at the Julius Kruttschnitt Mineral Research Centre (JKMRC) and other research institutions around the world as part of the AMIRA International P9 Project. The JKTech studies were concentrated around the primary zinc circuit. During this period, Century expanded the primary zinc regrind capacity, installed additional scavenging capacity, installed and commissioned a Jameson cell for concentrate cleaning in the carbon preflotation circuit, and installed additional primary grinding capacity. Flotation circuit models were developed for each of the survey campaigns and enabled opportunities for further improvement to be identified, implemented and tested in the subsequent campaign.

Gold-silver mineralization at Cracow and Ukalunda in Queensland comprise quartz-filled veins, fissures and breccia zones hosted by propylitically altered volcanics and epizonal intrusions which are strongly fractured. The terrestrial volcanic facies, structural setting, type of alteration and complex mineralogy suggest these deposits are of the epithermal type.The 180 depleted character of the wall-rocks is consistent with the involvement of meteoric waters in convective hydrothermal cells associated with the vulcanism. The Cracow quartzes have remarkably low 6180 values from -2.0 to -3.4 per mil typical. of meteoric hydrothermal systems at high latitude, consistent with the inferred position of Australia during the Permian. 6180 values for the Ukalunda quartzes exhibit a wide range from 5.1 to 14.9 per mil which reflect the mixing of magmatic and meteoric waters, and a steep geothermal gradient.Further stable isotope and geochemical studies are in progress to establish the scale and morphology of the zones of anomalous 6180 and mineralogy in the wallrocks which constitute significant exploration targets.

Several mineral resources have been recognised to alkaline igneous rocks. In general, these mineralisations present low P grades, so a complex concentration process is required to achieve commercial grade concentrates. This process is guided not only by the ore characteristics, such as apatite grain size and liberation degree, gangue minerals and slimes content, but also by different apatite varieties, iron oxi-hydroxide surface coating and roughness. The main techniques applied to apatite and phosphate ore characterisation, such as optical microscopy, cathodoluminescence (CL) microscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), surface techniques and magnetic separation are discussed, aiming to evaluate distinct apatite varieties and their technological behaviour.

Across the globe, it is a common scenario that tailings storage facilities (TSFs) are being decommissioned; however, their subsequent impact on the local environment and landscape can often be overlooked during the mine planning process. In addition, the requirement of a cover system for a facilities closure may not be a priority until the latter stages of the mine/mill operation when potential cover materials may have been utilised elsewhere or, worse, buried. Developing a conceptual design and closure plan for a TSF early in a mining venture is fundamental to its success once operations have ceased. If a cover system is a planned component for rehabilitation of a TSF, it is vital that its design is appropriate to the facility and any local site constraints, such as climate and cover system material availability. It is also strongly recommended that various cover system options are physically trialled at the site by using performance-monitoring instrumentation. Through this process, an informed decision can be made regarding the most appropriate cover system design to meet any regulatory and stakeholder closure objectives and criteria specific to the site in question; however, in order for the cover system’s performance to be determined through on-site trials, it is essential that an appropriate instrumentation design is utilised. Often, little attention is paid to the data that is being obtained, and its importance may only become apparent after several years of monitoring at an expense to the venture. This should not be the case. Many sites have used an appropriate initial planning stage to understand what is required for the successful closure of a TSF, how it can be achieved and how monitoring data can be utilised to prove, or otherwise, that a cover system design will be a success.CITATION:Barritt, R and Scott, P, 2015. Northern Star’s Thunderbox Open Pit C-Zone cutback was designed to maximise extraction in a short life excavation; In fresh rock on the western wall this included 20 m to 30 m bench heights with 6.5 m to 10 m berm widths and a 90° pre-split angle. Rock mass quality in this area is generally fair to good, however, there are sections where the dominant foliation runs parallel with the designed pit wall, and more closely spaced, altered, foliation is present: these areas are difficult to predict and prone to failure. Stringent controls and monitoring were required in order to safely access below these areas, in particular the use of slope stability monitoring radar, Trigger Action Response Plans (TARPs), re-entry procedures, visual inspections, drone inspections and day-to-day personnel awareness of the hazard. Robust and comprehensively planned remediation was also required after two significant slope failure events where long reach equipment and rope access techniques were utilised to remediate the areas in question safely, but also in a timely manner, such that expected production targets were impacted as little as reasonably practicable. This combination of rigorous risk management and well planned remediation resulted in a successful and complete extraction of the C-Zone cutback with no impact to operational safety.

Initial coal production at Ulan was solely from underground mines. A significant increase in demand for steaming coal in the late 1970&apos;s emphasised the need to further expand production and led to the development of the open cut mine which commenced commercial production in June, 1982.During the initial stages of mine planning, feasibility and cost studies were undertaken to determine the most suitable method for coal haulage from the pit. The comparison between a conventional truck haulage system and an in-pit crushing system using a mobile crusher and moveable belt conveyor haulage confirmed that the mobile crusher and conveyor system was superior in every respect for the Ulan mining operations.Technical features and design parameters for the major items of equipment are outlined as well as operating, manning and performance assessments. Minor equipment problems were encountered during initial operation but these have since beenrectified and the plant is now capable of exceeding the design production. Maintenance and energy costs are considerably lower than originally estimated and production efficiencies are continually improving as operators develop new techniques and procedures in the handling of the equipment.

The installation of truck turntables at above-ground crushers has the potential to yield gains in efficiency and productivity by eliminating the need for the trucks to turn around and reverse up to the crusher to dump their loads. The benefits include savings in time, fuel consumption and tyre wear. In addition, having a smaller area near the crushers dedicated to manoeuvring the trucks can be a significant benefit at some sites. Safety is also enhanced using turntables.This paper describes a project with the Australian Turntable Company to develop software that generates near-optimal layouts for the paths taken by the trucks in the vicinity of the crushers when turntables are present or absent. The geometry of the paths is constrained by the turning radius of the trucks and by the boundary of the manoeuvring area. The software quantifies the benefit of installing turntables by generating a design for paths with turntables and comparing it with the layout in current or planned use by the mining company. Throughout the 2016/2017 financial year, the NSW Resources Regulator conducted an assessment of each underground metalliferous operation across the state to assess how each operation managed the principal mining hazard of ground and strata control. The assessment considered all aspects of the mining process, including all aspects of managing geotechnical risk within drawpoints. This assessment is ongoing and, therefore, this paper is limited to the first six mines assessed in the program.In 2015 there were three fatalities in and around underground drawpoints in Australian metalliferous mines. Whilst many of the systems of work around underground development are consistent across the industry, there are large discrepancies around how each underground mining operation manage the risks associated with drawpoints.For drawpoints to be effectively managed, their management needs to be considered at the earliest stages of the mine planning process. By using downholes and adopting remote systems of work – systems that are continuing to improve with technology – the risks drawpoints posed can be greatly reduced.The assessment by the NSW Resources Regulator revealed a number of common failings across the state in the management of the risks that drawpoints pose. The assessment also observed a number of innovative practices that particular operations have adopted in the wake of serious incidents occurring within drawpoints at their operation; however, these practices have not been communicated to other operations.It is hoped the learnings from the assessment can be considered by industry and reduce the risks drawpoints pose in underground metalliferous mines.CITATION:Hill, X, 2017. Arrow Energy NL has been operating a number of coal seam gas wells in the Darling Downs region of Queensland. At the time of writing this paper, the region is enduring an extended drought period. The local aquifers are depleting and have not been significantly recharged in over a decade. The local communities (both rural and townships) are struggling to obtain water. Currently, coal seam gas (CSG) operators (under licence) draw water from the coal seams as part of the gas production process and the majority of operators choose to evaporate this water, as it is characteristically brackish to saline in quality and as such must be contained. Although the water produced from one CSG operator is not sufficient to drought-proof the greater area of the Darling Downs, there is potential to supply smaller local areas and contribute to the sustainability of these communities. This paper outlines the work completed by Arrow and its local community partners on the Darling Downs to date, and discusses the application of the produced formation water for:stock watering in feedlots, as a feedstock for coal washing, as a potable water supply for Dalby, as an agricultural water supply for cotton farming, and use as a medium for growing salt-water fin fish.

An experimental study of the packing of a coal heap has been carried out. The bulk density of a coal heap is considered as a function of a number of variables, viz flow rate, conveyor belt speed, the height of the disengagement point of the conveyor belt, coal particle density, moisture content, the size of the heap and coal particle size distribution. The effects of the dimensionless numbers resulting from dimensional analysis on the packing density of a coal heap have been experimentally examined and analysed. Based on the experimental results, equations have been formulated for the estimation of the bulk density of a coal stockpile. The validity of these equations are checked by comparing the predictions with measurements of real industrial Stockpiles.

Gas problems, largely instantaneous outbursts of coal and gas, arose in the early days of coal mining in Australia, leading to attempts at predrainage often including destressing. With deeper mining and new gassy areas being mined, gas problems have increased. This has led to more research, such as into coal-gas relationships, and more practical trials into seam gas drainage in both the Sydney and Bowen basins. Predrainage techniques have been devised to suit the special Australian geological conditions and to take into account the erratic occurrence of CO, (nearly 100 per cent in some cases) in the seam gas. Better mining methods and other improvements are continuing. The introduction of post-drainage has been simplified by the adaptation of long established overseas techniques and equipment.Utilisation of seam gases in Australia is complicated by the presence of CO, but even with pure CH. little has been done.Seam gas drainage has some disadvantages such as the need for, and the dangers of, complex and rigorously controlled plant. Also drained coal becomes harder and dustier.

Excavation through fill material in underground metalliferous mines is usually avoided where possible, unlike in Civil Engineering application where excavation through soft ground is normally a matter of course. In the mining situation, where excavation is normally for access only, then excavation designs are engineered for mining in hard rock, except where previous lack of forward planning has made such excavation inevitable or a mining strategy sequence necessitates some mining through fill in order to achieve optimum recovery of ore. Historically, this has been the case, because of the lack of knowledge of the support characteristics of the fill material placed underground and the lack of knowledge of the composition of the fill material as placed. The expertise and experience available from mechanised excavation techniques in Civil Engineering application (shield jacking, forepoling, spiling, and soft tunnel boring, to name a few) are available for application to the underground mining situation if the need ever arises. This paper briefly reviews the background of mobile primary crushers and their current main areas of application. The benefits of applying mobile primary crushing and belt conveying systems are analysed. The impacts of applying such systems to different steps of the mine process are discussed, including mine development and planning. Application examples are used for demonstrating further possibilities to apply mobile primary crushing and belt conveying systems in mining projects successfully.
